StarWorld: A Cross-Layer World Model for Starlink Prediction and Streaming

Bowen Zhang, Pengcheng Luo, Hongjun Xie, Shujin Jia, Genke Yang, Jian Chu

原文摘要

Starlink and other low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband systems exhibit stochastic access dynamics whose effects propagate from network measurements to throughput prediction and adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming, making reasoning over multiple plausible futures essential. Existing studies mainly characterize realized traces or individual system layers, leaving cross-layer world modeling of these evolving dynamics largely unexplored. To address this gap, we propose StarWorld, a cross-layer world model for Starlink prediction and streaming. StarWorld couples learned stochastic network dynamics with executable prediction, control, and playback processes to imagine multi-step cross-layer futures, while a calibrated Trust Gate determines whether these futures are sufficiently reliable for use. On real Starlink measurements, StarWorld achieves the lowest network-future distributional errors among the comparison methods at the principal horizons and reduces pairwise controller quality-of-experience (QoE) effect error by 76%. These results support StarWorld as a cross-layer imagination environment for studying prediction and streaming outcomes under uncertain Starlink access conditions.

Intrinsic Distribution Matching

原文摘要

One-step and few-step text-to-image generation must accurately render the details specified in the prompt despite limited opportunities for refinement. Distribution matching distillation (DMD) uses score differences to bring the generated distribution closer to a reference distribution. Following prior work, we estimate this difference with internal velocity branches, avoiding a separate fake-score network. We ask whether an explicit moment constraint improves this learned score supervision. A decomposition of the reverse-KL field into a Gaussian moment component and a non-Gaussian residual identifies statistics that can be constrained explicitly. We introduce Intrinsic Distribution Matching (IDM), which retains the full DMD correction and matches feature means and per-coordinate standard deviations using the generator's exponential-moving-average (EMA) copy, requiring no external feature encoder. Experiments use full-parameter and low-rank adaptation (LoRA) tuning on Z-Image-Turbo 6B and Qwen-Image 20B. At two network evaluations, IDM reaches 94.25% and 90.20% on Chinese and English LongText-Bench, the highest scores among the compared methods at this budget. Controlled ablations show gains from the added moment loss, while generator EMA features perform competitively with an external DINOv2 encoder across the five reported metrics. PRISM: Personalized Item Representations in User History

原文摘要

Sequential recommenders typically construct history inputs from item identifiers or content features using an embedding map shared across users. The same item therefore yields the same initial embedding representation, even when users have different relationships to the item. We propose personalized item representations in user history, where each item's embedding expresses its relationship to the user. Personalization becomes a property of the history inputs themselves, supplying richer evidence for later sequence modeling. We instantiate this idea with PRISM, which reuses upstream ranking computation to generate personalized item embeddings. An autoencoder jointly compresses all layer states from a user tower, a user--item tower, and same-request candidate mixing into one embedding per scored pair for downstream replay. Offline evaluation on Surface 1, a major recommendation surface at billion scale, reports an average downstream normalized entropy (NE) change of $-0.15\%$, compared with $-0.07\%$ for VISTA at similar history lengths. We further identify an empirical sequence-length scaling law: over history lengths of 26--240 events, NE gain follows a fitted power law with exponent 0.468, increasing from 0.06\% to 0.17\%. Therefore, personalized item representations in user history provide a new scaling dimension for improving recommendation quality.

Data-Driven Maintenance Optimization: Aligning Prognostic Learning with Decision Objective

Zhuojun Xie, Adam Abdin, Yiping Fang

原文摘要

Estimation error in machine learning prognostic models can propagate into poor maintenance decisions. We study a data-driven predictive maintenance problem coupling health-condition estimation with a joint ordering-replacement model. We show that the conventional Estimate-Then-Optimize (ETO) approach yields inconsistent, suboptimal decisions for a broad class of such problems. To bridge the gap, we propose an Integrated Estimate-Optimize (IEO) framework that directly targets maintenance cost as the prognostic learning objective, bypassing surrogate statistical accuracy metrics such as Kullback--Leibler divergence or mean squared error. Theoretically, we prove out-of-sample performance guarantees of the IEO framework under certain conditions, including i.i.d. and sliding-window data-generating processes. Computationally, we develop a training procedure combining Monte Carlo dropout, central-difference gradient approximation, and an ETO warm-start to handle discrete maintenance decisions and nonlinear costs. Experiments on the four CMAPSS subsets demonstrate that, under the nominal setting, IEO reduces mean maintenance cost by 14.8--22.7% relative to ETO and by 7.2--11.8% relative to a decision-oriented baseline, while also reducing failure rates and cost variation. These improvements are obtained despite higher prediction errors. Increasing the ratio of unplanned-downtime costs to planned-downtime costs makes this tradeoff more pronounced: IEO shifts predictions further toward RUL underestimation, accompanied by greater cost savings and fewer failures. These findings support aligning prognostic learning with maintenance objectives when imperfect predictions must guide decisions under costly unplanned downtime.

Natural Jammers: When Non-Robust Features Become Antagonistic

Jiaming Zhang, Fuyao Zhang, Pengjun Xie, Wei Yang Bryan Lim

原文摘要

Deep neural networks are known to rely on non-robust features that align poorly with human perception. Prior work has largely framed these features as opportunistic shortcuts that help standard models on clean data. We show instead that non-robust cues can be antagonistic: they can act as Natural Jammers that actively mislead standard models on clean, unmodified images. Using disagreement between a standard model and robust models as an analysis lens, we identify a Jammed Set on which robust models outperform standard models. We provide causal evidence for Spectral-spatial Locking: jamming arises only when high-frequency components are precisely aligned with specific spatial structures. Disrupting this lock through spectral filtering or small geometric shifts can restore correct predictions. Crucially, we uncover a Substitution Paradox: while individual jammers are fragile to geometric shifts, the aggregate prevalence of jamming remains approximately stable and is redistributed rather than eliminated under such transformations. Our results reframe natural non-robustness as a failure field over the empirical model-data geometry: one that redistributes rather than disappears under small transformations.

Nested Browser-Use Learning for Agentic Information Seeking

原文摘要

Information-seeking (IS) agents have achieved strong performance across a range of wide and deep search tasks, yet their tool use remains largely restricted to API-level snippet retrieval and URL-based page fetching, limiting access to the richer information available through real browsing. While full browser interaction could unlock deeper capabilities, its fine-grained control and verbose page content returns introduce substantial complexity for ReAct-style function-calling agents. To bridge this gap, we propose Nested Browser-Use Learning (NestBrowse), which introduces a minimal and complete browser-action framework that decouples interaction control from page exploration through a nested structure. This design simplifies agentic reasoning while enabling effective deep-web information acquisition. Empirical results on challenging deep IS benchmarks demonstrate that NestBrowse offers clear benefits in practice. Further in-depth analyses underscore its efficiency.

Evidence-Augmented Policy Optimization with Reward Co-Evolution for Long-Context Reasoning

原文摘要

While Reinforcement Learning (RL) has advanced LLM reasoning, applying it to long-context scenarios is hindered by sparsity of outcome rewards. This limitation fails to penalize ungrounded “lucky guesses,” leaving the critical process of needle-in-a-haystack evidence retrieval largely unsupervised. To address this, we propose EAPO (Evidence-Augmented Policy Optimization). We first establish the Evidence-Augmented Reasoning paradigm, validating via Tree-Structured Evidence Sampling that precise evidence extraction is the decisive bottleneck for long-context reasoning. Guided by this insight, EAPO introduces a specialized RL algorithm where a reward model computes a Group-Relative Evidence Reward, providing dense process supervision to explicitly improve evidence quality. To sustain accurate supervision throughout training, we further incorporate an Adaptive Reward-Policy Co-Evolution mechanism. This mechanism iteratively refines the reward model using outcome-consistent rollouts, sharpening its discriminative capability to ensure precise process guidance. Comprehensive evaluations across eight benchmarks demonstrate that EAPO significantly enhances long-context reasoning performance compared to SOTA baselines.

原文摘要

Composed Image Retrieval (CIR) is a pivotal and complex task in multimodal understanding. Current CIR benchmarks typically feature limited query categories and fail to capture the diverse requirements of real-world scenarios. To bridge this evaluation gap, we leverage image editing to achieve precise control over modification types and content, enabling a pipeline for synthesizing queries across a broad spectrum of categories. Using this pipeline, we construct EDIR, a novel fine-grained CIR benchmark. EDIR encompasses 5,000 high-quality queries structured across five main categories and fifteen subcategories. Our comprehensive evaluation of 13 multimodal embedding models reveals a significant capability gap; even state-of-the-art models (e.g., RzenEmbed and GME) struggle to perform consistently across all subcategories, highlighting the rigorous nature of our benchmark. Through comparative analysis, we further uncover inherent limitations in existing benchmarks, such as modality biases and insufficient categorical coverage. Furthermore, an in-domain training experiment demonstrates the feasibility of our benchmark. This experiment clarifies the task challenges by distinguishing between categories that are solvable with targeted data and those that expose intrinsic limitations of current model architectures.
