From Review to Reuse: How Post-Task Workflow Can Support Human-AI Agent Interaction

Zekun Wu, Xinru Wang, Rock Yuren Pang, Chenglong Wang, Anna Maria Feit

AI agents can automate tasks by turning a single natural-language request into a multi-step process spanning tools, files, and applications. Users are often left to judge that process from fragmented execution information and the final output. To make the completed process easier to understand, validate, and reuse, we investigate post-task workflows: editable, graph-based representations of an agent's completed execution. We first analyzed 10,803 public workflow templates from n8n to characterize real-world automation practice, then developed Trace2Flow, a research probe that translates agent execution traces into interactive post-task workflows. In a study, participants (N = 20) reviewed agent executions with prompt or agent errors. We found that post-task workflows improved their understanding and error detection over a prompt-only condition, and that validation succeeded mainly when users cross-checked across multiple evidence sources. For follow-up tasks, adapting the workflow matched adapting the prior prompt in success, time, and difficulty, and was often preferred.

From Reasoning to Action: Consequence-Grounded Alignment for Vision-Language-Action Models

Yixue Zhang, Wenke Xia, Kun Wu, Wenbo Yu, Pei Ren, Junnan Nie, Di Hu, Zhengping Che 等 9 位作者

Reasoning informs decision-making by connecting intended actions with their expected consequences. Recent vision-language-action (VLA) models incorporate embodied chains of thought (ECoTs) to guide action generation. However, such guidance remains implicit, as actions are conditioned on ECoTs rather than explicitly optimized to align with them. We introduce CoRAct, a consequence-grounded reasoning-to-action alignment framework that explicitly aligns reasoning and action through reward-guided optimization in action noise space. CoRAct formulates two physically grounded ECoT components as verifiable signals: movement specifies intended motion, while waypoints encode expected spatial consequences. A unified Mixture-of-Transformers jointly models ECoT reasoning, action generation, and action-conditioned future prediction. For candidate actions generated from sampled noise, CoRAct computes alignment rewards based on movement consistency and agreement between predicted outcomes and specified waypoints. These rewards guide group-relative optimization of the initial noise distribution, steering action generation toward consistency with intended actions and expected consequences. Experiments across RoboCasa, VLABench, and real-world manipulation tasks demonstrate improvements in task success, generalization, and reasoning-execution alignment over strong ECoT-based VLA baselines. CoRAct also grounds externally provided ECoTs in executable behavior, enabling zero-shot adaptation to novel scenarios by leveraging knowledge from powerful vision-language models. Corrupted but Correct: Why Vision-Language Models Lie to Themselves Internally

Arun Josephraj Arokiaraj, Chenyi Huang, Zekun Wu, Adriano Koshiyama

A targeted adversarial perturbation can drive a vision-language model's (VLM's) teacher-forced training loss for a fixed target caption to near zero, yet the same model, allowed to generate freely, produces the original, correct description with no trace of the target. We call this dissociation the train/inference gap, and give it a precise mechanistic account on Qwen2.5-VL-7B-Instruct using a controlled two-stage PGD attack on 200 held-out COCO images. First, we show that image-level pixel statistics, including a correctly re-implemented, texture-based attackability measure from the CNN robustness literature, have essentially no predictive power over which images are corrupted (best predictor r=-0.050, p=0.484; ridge regression R^2=0.069). Second, using the logit lens, we localise the gap to a single autoregressive step: the rank of the target token, conditioned on the correct first token already being generated, is fixed at exactly 3,488 out of 152,064 vocabulary entries for every image and every condition, with zero variance. Third, tracking target-token rank across all 28 LLM decoder layers reveals that the visual encoder corrupts every image's representation by a comparable margin regardless of eventual outcome, but the language model decoder then differentially arbitrates: amplifying the corrupted signal for susceptible images and actively suppressing it, past its clean-image baseline, for resistant ones (p<0.001, rank-biserial r=0.579). A linear probe on the merger hidden state separates these two outcomes with AUC=0.858, though we flag a circularity concern in this estimate. Together these results argue that adversarial robustness in autoregressive VLMs is substantially a property of the language decoder's prior, not the visual encoder, with direct implications for where faithfulness evaluations and defenses for deployed VLM systems should be targeted.

RoboGene: Diversity-Driven Agentic Task Generation Framework for VLA Pre-training

Yixue Zhang, Kun Wu, Zhi Gao, Zhen Zhao, Pei Ren, Zhiyuan Xu, Fei Liao, Xinhua Wang 等 15 位作者

The pursuit of general-purpose robotic manipulation is hindered by the scarcity of diverse, real-world interaction data. Unlike large-scale web vision-language data, robotic data collection incurs prohibitive physical costs. The key challenge is thus not merely to collect more robot data, but to obtain informative training data that broadens behavioral coverage across objects, scenes, and skills. Yet automatically curating task proposals to maximize the utility of collected data remains under-explored. We introduce RoboGene, an agentic framework for generating diverse, informative manipulation tasks across single-arm, dual-arm, and mobile robots. RoboGene combines (1) diversity-driven sampling for broad task coverage, (2) agentic self-reflection for task-quality assessment, and (3) human-verified feedback memory for execution-grounded validation and continual refinement. Through quantitative analysis and large-scale real-world experiments, we collect 18k trajectories and introduce metrics for task feasibility and diversity. RoboGene significantly outperforms frontier foundation models, including GPT-4o and Gemini 2.5 Pro. VLA models trained on RoboGene-generated data achieve higher success rates and stronger generalization, highlighting the value of high-quality task generation. Revealing Procedural Reasoning Structures in Chain-of-Thought Training via Span-Level Gradient Organization

Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting enables large language models to produce multi-step reasoning, yet how such reasoning-related structure is expressed during training remains poorly understood. We present Gradient-based Structural Developer (GSD), an unsupervised framework with a principled gradient aggregation view that tracks span-level gradient during fine-tuning on reasoning benchmarks to understand how models develop structured, step-by-step reasoning capabilities. Our analysis shows that while gradients at the level of individual tokens are often noisy, aggregating gradients over contiguous reasoning-related spans reveals stable and recurring directional alignment across samples. We refer to these directionally aligned patterns as aligned sequential stresses, reflecting consistent gradient organization associated with similar reasoning procedures. Beyond capturing semantically similar reasoning instances, such gradient alignment also reveals structurally similar but semantically diverse cases that share common procedural organization. These findings position GSD as a diagnostic framework for analyzing how procedural reasoning structures emerge during training, with downstream selection results serving as auxiliary evidence correlating gradient alignment with adaptation efficiency.
