Pipeline-parallel distributed optimization is essential for large-scale machine learning but is challenged by significant communication overhead from transmitting high-dimensional activations and gradients between workers. Existing approaches often depend on impractical unbiased gradient assumptions or incur sample-size memory overhead. This paper introduces Clapping, a Communication compression algorithm with LAzy samPling for Pipeline-parallel learnING. Clapping adopts a lazy sampling strategy that reuses data samples across steps, breaking sample-wise memory barrier and supporting convergence in few-epoch or online regimes. Clapping comprises two variants including Clapping-FC and Clapping-FU, both of which achieve convergence without unbiased assumption for compressed gradient, effectively addressing compression error propagation in multi-worker settings. Numerical experiments validate the performance of Clapping across different tasks.
Four-bit post-training quantization can reduce the memory demands of large language models, but preserving accuracy under strict MXFP4 W4A4 requires coordinating several design choices. Coordinate transforms change block-encoding errors, which in turn affect the residuals propagated through the network. The useful algorithmic decomposition is therefore not fully known before search. LLM-driven program evolution offers a way to explore these choices, but performance scores alone do not explain which design should change next. We introduce QuantForge, a PTQ discovery system that records competing explanations, selects controls that distinguish them, and checks that successor code implements the resulting conclusions. This residual compilation guides program revisions while retaining useful programs even when their original explanations are rejected. Remeasuring the revised program reveals the next error to address. This process discovers HiRes, a fixed MXFP4 quantizer that shapes coordinates, refines legal code assignments, and recovers errors along attention and MLP paths. Each stage acts on residuals measured after the preceding stage has executed. Across seven tasks, HiRes achieves the lowest seven-model Robust Fit (0.09300) and the lowest quantized Fit-7 at 32B. In matched-budget comparisons of LLM-driven program evolution, each with 240 evaluator calls, QuantForge reaches a held-out transfer target in six of eight runs, compared with three each for textual memory and reflection memory, and one for score-only evolution, despite evaluating fewer new programs. These results show that QuantForge improves the discovery of transferable PTQ algorithms by turning controlled evidence into subsequent program changes. We have open-sourced the QuantForge search framework.

In surgical instrument segmentation, the increasing variety of instruments over time poses a significant challenge for existing neural networks, as they are unable to effectively learn such incremental tasks and suffer from catastrophic forgetting. When learning new data, the model experiences a sharp performance drop on previously learned data. Although several continual learning methods have been proposed for incremental understanding tasks in surgical scenarios, the issue of data imbalance often leads to a strong bias in the segmentation head, resulting in poor performance. Data imbalance can occur in two forms: (i) class imbalance between new and old data, and (ii) class imbalance within the same time point of data. Such imbalances often cause the dominant classes to take over the training process of continual semantic segmentation (CSS). To address this issue, we propose SurgCSS, a novel plug-and-play CSS framework for surgical instrument segmentation under data imbalance. Specifically, we generate realistic surgical backgrounds through inpainting and blend instrument foregrounds with the generated backgrounds in a class-aware manner to balance the data distribution in various scenarios. We further propose the Class Desensitization Loss by employing contrastive learning to correct edge biases caused by data imbalance. Moreover, we dynamically fuse the weight parameters of the old and new models to achieve a better trade-off between the biased and unbiased model weights. To investigate the data imbalance problem in surgical scenarios, we construct a new benchmark for surgical instrument CSS by integrating datasets. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, achieving significant performance improvement against existing baselines.

In recent years, safety risks associated with large language models have become increasingly prominent, highlighting the urgent need to mitigate the generation of toxic and harmful content. The mainstream paradigm for LLM safety alignment typically adopts a collaborative framework involving three roles: an attacker for adversarial prompt generation, a defender for safety defense, and an evaluator for response assessment. In this paper, we propose a closed-loop reinforcement learning framework called TriPlay-RL that enables iterative and co-improving collaboration among three roles with near-zero manual annotation. Experimental results show that the attacker preserves high output diversity while achieving a 20%–50% improvement in adversarial effectiveness. The defender attains 10%–30% gains in safety performance without degrading general reasoning capability, and the evaluator continuously refines its fine-grained judgment ability through iterations, accurately distinguishing unsafe responses, simple refusals, and useful guidance. Overall, our framework establishes an efficient and scalable paradigm for LLM safety alignment, enabling continuous co-evolution within a unified learning loop. The code is available at https://github.com/Qihoo360/TriPlay-RL.

Large language models (LLMs) have achieved strong performance in general machine translation, yet their ability in culture-aware scenarios remains poorly understood. To bridge this gap, we introduce CanMT, a Culture-Aware Novel-Driven Parallel Dataset for Machine Translation, together with a theoretically grounded, multi-dimensional evaluation frame work for assessing cultural translation quality. Leveraging CanMT, we systematically evaluate a wide range of LLMs and translation systems under different translation strategy constraints. Our findings reveal substantial performance disparities across models and demonstrate that translation strategies exert a systematic influence on model behavior. Further analysis shows that translation difficulty varies across types of culture-specific items, and that a persistent gap remains between models’recognition of culture-specific knowledge and their ability to correctly operationalize it in translation outputs. In addition, incorporating reference translations is shown to substantially improve evaluation reliability in LLM-as-a-judge, underscoring their essential role in assessing culture-aware translation quality. The corpus and code are available at CanMT.
