Screen Before You Serve: Simulation for Production Customer Experience AI Agents at 140M Scale

Edesio Alcobaça, Kevin Rossell, Aman Gupta, Shao Tang, Jiwoo Hong, Pabel Carrillo-Mendoza, Wanderson Conceição Ferreira, Alvaro Tedeschi 等 16 位作者

Customer experience (CX) agents use tools and large language models to address customer requests and guide conversational interactions with an organization's products. Improving these agents, especially in regulated industries, is difficult: they must detect intent, follow complex operational policies and use tools reliably. Manual end-to-end testing offers limited coverage, while live experiments expose customers to failures that can erode trust. We present a hypothesis-driven simulation workflow for screening candidate CX agents before deployment. Synthetic customers react to agent responses and simulated tool outputs enable multi-step agentic workflows without invoking production backends. We use the Snowglobe simulator on Nubank's Card Delivery agent and its expanded successor, Card Management - Nubank's highest-volume chat-support agent in Brazil. Across 4 deployed versions, simulated and production version-level binary evaluator scores show high correlation. Simulation-guided iteration increased transactional net promoter score (tNPS) by 36.69 points in a live A/B test. We also screened open-weight configurations in over 16,000 simulated conversations. In a subsequent live A/B test, the selected model increased self-service rate (SSR) by 8.82 percentage points to the highest level observed at Nubank, with no statistically significant change in tNPS. Simulation made broad exploration of models, reasoning settings, and prompts feasible without customer exposure, enabling production improvements that would have been impractical to pursue through live experimentation alone.

MedGraph: Maintaining Patient State with Graph Memory for Long-Term Medical Dialogue

Donghua Zhang, Zizheng Wang, Ze Dong, Yiding Feng, Siyu Qian

LLM-based medical assistants that follow a patient across visits need a memory that keeps the patient's clinical state correct as it changes. We examine the errors of five memory systems on longitudinal medical dialogue and find three recurring causes: the retrieved evidence gives an outdated state, includes another person's health facts, or lacks a safety fact the answer depends on. We present MedGraph, a graph memory built for these three cases. Construction extracts dated facts from each session, attributes each fact to the person it describes, and links medication, diagnosis, and measurement records into chains that keep earlier states. Retrieval ranks the patient's chains as units, reads each chain at the time the question asks about, and adds the original dialogue text; a patient profile lists every recorded safety fact with every question. On MedMemoryBench, MedGraph has the highest overall accuracy with both a GPT and a Qwen backbone, 10.5 and 10.4 points above the strongest of five baselines, with efficient memory construction and answering in the GPT setting.

GINGER: Spicing Up Graph-Based Vector Search

We present \textsc{Ginger}, a state-of-the-art open-source C++ library for graph-based approximate nearest neighbor search (ANNS). We developed \textsc{Ginger} at Google to push the speed and memory efficiency of graph search on large and high-dimensional embedding datasets. \textsc{Ginger} surpasses existing ANNS libraries with regards to query throughput and indexing time while matching the memory footprint of the most space-efficient competitors. \textsc{Ginger} builds upon recent advances in proximity graph construction (PiPNN) and vector quantization (TurboQuant). We introduce Nested TurboQuant (NTQ), a two-level quantizer which supports low precision graph navigation and high precision reranking in a single code. This representation achieves near floating point precision with $2.6\times$ less memory. We also compress the size of our proximity graphs by up to $2.5\times$ without impacting query throughput. We combine graph reordering with a new lossless compression codec called AdaptiveGap, which builds upon StreamVByte. At $95\%$ recall, \textsc{Ginger} speeds up query throughput by an average of $1.8\times$ over each dataset's fastest competitor and by at least $2.3\times$ over any single library. This lead grows to $2.9\times$ over compact libraries on high-dimensional embeddings.

First-Token Attraction in Mamba Dynamics

Trinh T. Nguyen, Minh-Khoi Nguyen-Nhat, Duy-Tung Pham, Hoang-Son Do, Tan Minh Nguyen, Thieu N. Vo

We study token dynamics in deep Mamba models, with a particular focus on the attracting role of the first token. Unlike attention mechanisms, where token interactions are governed by positive scalar coefficients, Mamba dynamics involve full matrix-valued interaction coefficients with no positivity or definiteness guarantees. This structural difference makes Mamba dynamics substantially harder to analyze and prevents the direct application of existing techniques for attention-based models. To overcome this challenge, we introduce a new analytical framework based on a high-dimensional invariant box and a sharp exit-time argument, which together recover an effective form of sign-definiteness. Using this framework, we characterize the possible limit points of token trajectories and prove explicit exponential convergence rates. Our analysis reveals that the first token has privileged dynamics: its limiting direction attracts subsequent tokens, inducing token clustering and attention-sink phenomena in deep Mamba models. We further show that this attraction mechanism extends to broader sequence dynamics, including state-space models, causal attention, and classical time-series models. Experiments on Falcon-Mamba-7B validate our predictions, showing that concentration on the first token increases with depth and dominates in later layers.

Dynamic Optimistic Constrained OCO with Memory via Delay Equivalence

Mohammed Abdullah, George Iosifidis, Salah Eddine Elayoubi, Tijani Chahed

Online Convex Optimization with memory and time-varying constraints (COCO-M) is a recently-introduced framework that captures the dynamics of stateful online learning and non-stochastic control with budget constraints. Despite its expressive power, COCO-M remains largely understudied. In this work, we tackle this problem in its full scale, providing an optimistic algorithm that incorporates untrusted predictions to tame universal dynamic regret and cumulative constraint violation. Our analysis leverages a potent reduction from memory to delay and treats state-dependent gradients as delayed feedback. We establish the first bounds that adapt to both environment non-stationarity (path length $P_T$) and prediction accuracy, while lifting previous restrictive assumptions such as functional separability. En route to these results, we derive findings of independent interest for the memory-to-delay reduction, and for delayed OCO with time-varying constraints. The proposed framework ensures sublinear worst-case guarantees that improve with prediction accuracy, reaching $\mathcal O(1)$ regret under perfect predictions, with cumulative constraint violation (CCV) $\mathcal O(\sqrt{T})$ for unknown $P_T$ and $\mathcal O(\log T)$ for known or online observable $P_T$ , while recovering the optimal COCO rates when memory disappears.

AraEngage: Interpretable Linguistic Correlates of Engagement in Arabic Facebook News

Shimaa Ibrahim, Nour Elhouda Dalloua, Md. Rafiul Biswas, Wajdi Zaghouani

Engagement features developed for English are routinely applied to Arabic, but unvocalized Arabic changes what a lexical feature measures. We introduce AraEngage, a query-defined sample of 10,000 public Arabic Facebook news posts from 2,451 pages in 57 countries (2023-2024) that pairs engagement counts with interpretable linguistic features. We use it to examine which interpretable Arabic indicators are associated with follower-normalized engagement, and how far those associations can be trusted given publisher context, the definition of engagement, and lexical ambiguity. Religious expressions, message length, sentence length, and lexical density are the leading correlates in a Random Forest model ($R^2$ = 0.38 on a post-level split) interpreted with SHAP. Unlike English news, positive sentiment is associated with higher engagement in this Arabic news sample. Message length shows a length paradox: unadjusted raw engagement is highest for long posts, whereas the model's attributions for follower-normalized engagement favor short posts. A linguistic audit identifies why standard lexicon features are fragile in unvocalized Arabic: imperative lists contain homographs such as the form read as "express!" that is also the frequent preposition "via", hedge lists conflate the possibility marker qad + imperfect ("may") with the emphatic qad + perfect ("has indeed"), and religious lists mix devotional formulas with place names in political news. These are plausible sources of measurement error that may attenuate the near-zero associations of imperatives and hedges. All findings are observational associations with operationalized indicators. We release the derived linguistic features, engagement counts, refined lexicons, and analysis code; raw posts are not redistributed, in line with CrowdTangle terms.

ReferClaw: Disambiguating User Intent for Egocentric Assistance

Hangyu Qin, Junbin Xiao, Angela Yao

Users of egocentric AI assistants often ask short, ambiguous questions whose intended referents cannot be uniquely resolved from video and dialogue history. For example, "Where did I leave it?" may refer to several previously handled objects. Existing VideoQA systems typically commit to a single interpretation, risking plausible but intention-misaligned answers. We introduce ReferClaw, an agentic framework that formulates egocentric streaming QA as an interactive process: the assistant asks clarifying questions to resolve user intent before answering. Three cooperating agents identify candidate interpretations, request clarification, and generate answers grounded in the resolved intent and visual evidence. A bounded, cost-aware policy balances expected information gain against user effort while limiting clarification turns and question complexity. Referclaw learns from interaction through intent-specific skill updates and process-reward-guided policy optimization with agent-level credit assignment. Evaluations on augmented egocentric QA benchmarks demonstrate improved answer accuracy and joint answer-and-grounding performance over existing baselines, alongside zero-shot transfer across datasets. These findings support interactive clarification as a practical approach to resolving online user intent in egocentric streaming assistance.

FREE-LIVO: Physically Decoupled Yet Tightly Coupled LiDAR-Inertial-Visual Odometry

Reon Tabata, Kenji Koide, Shuji Oishi, Taku Okawara, Mizuho Aoki, Aoki Takanose, Masashi Yokozuka, Jun Miura

LiDAR-Inertial-Visual Odometry (LIVO) integrates complementary LiDAR, camera, and IMU measurements to achieve robust state estimation. However, most existing methods assume a fixed relative pose and accurate time synchronization between sensors. Toward modular and heterogeneous robotic systems, this paper presents FREE-LIVO, a tightly coupled odometry method that requires neither a rigid LiDAR-camera rig nor LiDAR-camera time synchronization. The proposed method uses a pretrained image feature matcher to establish correspondences between a camera image and a dense LiDAR intensity image generated from a single LiDAR scan using a generative model. From the resulting 3D point-to-pixel correspondences, we construct reprojection factors that directly constrain LiDAR and camera poses at different acquisition times. These factors are jointly optimized in a single factor graph together with constraints from point cloud registration, visual feature tracking, and the IMU measurements associated with each sensor. On six sequences from the public M3DGR dataset, FREE-LIVO achieves an average absolute trajectory error (ATE) RMSE of 0.45 m without provided LiDAR-camera extrinsic parameters and exhibits minimal accuracy degradation under time synchronization errors of up to 0.5 s. Furthermore, experiments with the LiDAR and camera mounted on separate robots demonstrate that the method can jointly estimate the trajectories of independently moving sensors.

FedDyMem: Efficient Federated Learning with Dynamic Memory and Memory-Reduce for Unsupervised Image Anomaly Detection

Silin Chen, Andy Liu, Kangjian Di, Yichu Xu, Han-Jia Ye, Wenhan Luo, Ningmu Zou

Unsupervised image anomaly detection (UAD) has become a critical process in industrial and medical applications, where models are trained on normal samples without requiring labeled anomalies. However, even normal images may contain sensitive product designs, manufacturing information, or institution-specific population characteristics, making centralized data collection difficult in practical deployments. Federated UAD provides a promising decentralized solution, but it remains challenging because clients use only normal training samples, their feature distributions remain highly heterogeneous within the same task, and communication should be efficient while limiting the exposure of sensitive client information. To address these challenges, we propose FedDyMem, an efficient federated learning method with dynamic memory and memory-reduce for unsupervised image anomaly detection. Instead of exchanging full model parameters, FedDyMem facilitates knowledge sharing between the clients and server through reduced dynamic memory banks. In the local clients, a memory generator and a metric loss are employed to improve the consistency of the feature distribution for normal samples, leveraging the local model to update the memory bank dynamically. For efficient communication and data privacy, a memory-reduce method based on weighted averages is proposed to significantly decrease the scale of memory banks. This representation reduces communication overhead and empirically lowers reconstruction fidelity under inversion attacks. On the server, global memory is constructed and distributed to individual clients through k-means aggregation. Experiments on six federated UAD tasks constructed from eleven public industrial and medical datasets show that FedDyMem consistently improves anomaly detection and localization while reducing communication cost.

MITO: A Millimeter-Wave Dataset and Simulator for Non-Line-of-Sight Perception

Tara Boroushaki, Laura Dodds, Cusuh Ham, Fadel Adib

The ability to observe the world is fundamental to reasoning and making informed decisions on how to interact with the environment. However, optical perception can often be disrupted due to common occurrences like occlusions, which can pose challenges to existing vision systems. We present MITO, the first millimeter-wave (mmWave) dataset of diverse, everyday objects, collected using a UR5 robotic arm with two mmWave radars operating at different frequencies and an RGB-D camera. Unlike visible light, mmWave signals can penetrate common occlusions (e.g., cardboard boxes, fabric, plastic). MITO captures over 24 million mmWave frames and uses them to generate 550 high-resolution mmWave images in line-of-sight and non-light-of-sight (NLOS), as well as RGB-D images, segmentation masks, and raw mmWave signals, taken from 76 different objects. We develop an open-source simulation tool that can be used to generate synthetic mmWave images for any 3D triangle mesh. Finally, we establish benchmarks for NLOS segmentation and classification to demonstrate the utility of our dataset and simulator for enabling broader NLOS perception.

Encoding and Propagation of Grammatical Number in Large Language Models

Jacob Solinsky, Serguei Pakhomov

Sparse autoencoders (SAEs) have become an increasingly popular means of translating Large Language Model (LLM) hidden state vectors into a human-comprehensible list of features or symbols. As such, SAEs may provide insight into an LLM's knowledge representation and internal ``mental'' grammar - topics of pragmatic interest for mechanistic interpretation of AI behavior and of theoretical interest for the study of in silico representations of human language. Language models with fewer than 100M parameters, trained on small corpora, nonetheless exhibit strong grammatical competence and discourse coherence, despite producing content of limited reliability. We use SAEs that we trained on one such model (Pythia-70M) to conduct an in-depth examination of how a single grammatical phenomenon, number agreement, is represented and processed in an LLM. We demonstrate the mechanism and the methodology by which SAEs can be used to find and propagate ``plural noun'', ``plural matrix subject'', and ``generate a plural verb'' features which cause the LLM to produce plural verb forms such as ``are'', ``do'', or ``have'' instead of ``is'', ``does'', and ``has'' in response to prompts such as ``the men in the park''. We show that intervening to remove these features from the hidden states of plural subject noun tokens causes the model to produce singular verbs instead, and vice versa. We also show that corresponding ``singular noun'' and ``generate a singular verb'' features are not as effective for this task. This asymmetry suggests that Pythia-70m makes use of a privative representation of grammatical number in English. These findings replicated with larger LLMs Gemma-2-2b and Llama-3.1-8b yielded similar results. Our main contribution is a novel approach to the use of SAEs to understanding how LLMs encode human language that addresses a number of technical and methodological challenges.

An Empirical Study of Reinforcement Learning for Keypoint Positioning of Deformable Linear Objects

Vinay Rodrigues, Sara Zeynalpour, Gokhan Solak, Sebastian Hjorth, Arash Ajoudani

Deformable linear object (DLO) manipulation is challenging because high-dimensional configurations, nonlinear contact dynamics, and diverse material and geometric properties produce a broad range of object responses that are both difficult to model and data-intensive to learn. This work studies reinforcement learning for planar manipulation of a one-end-grasped DLO, focusing on training efficiency, observation design, robustness, and zero-shot sim-to-real transfer. We compare three Proximal Policy Optimization training stacks and find that the GPU-parallel MuJoCo Playground stack enables faster convergence and more consistent performance than CPU-based alternatives under the same wall-clock budget. Relative keypoint observations and an asymmetric actor-critic formulation further improve learning efficiency. Policies trained with observation noise, delay, domain randomization, and disturbances achieve simulation success rates of 96.4% for single-point tracking, 98.0% for disturbance recovery, and 88.8% for two-point tracking. Using markerless RGB-D keypoint estimation, the policies transfer without real-world fine-tuning, succeeding in 9/10, 10/10, and 8/10 physical trials, respectively.

Canonical Correlation Neural Networks

Andrea Cavallo, Sundeep Prabhakar Chepuri, Charilaos Kanatsoulis, Elvin Isufi

Relational inductive biases such as grids or graphs allow neural networks with fewer trainable parameters and improved generalization, but require a known structure beforehand. When no structure is available, the covariance matrix provides a principled substitute, and coVariance Neural Networks (VNNs) have shown that using it yields models that are theoretically grounded in Principal Component Analysis, stable to finite-sample estimation errors and parameter-efficient. This framework, however, is limited to single-view data, whereas many applications observe the same phenomenon through multiple views, each with its own in-view covariance and a cross-view covariance linking them. To incorporate these matrices as inductive biases in a principled way, we introduce CAnonical correlation NEural networks (CANEs), architectures that use in-view and cross-view covariances as distinct relational biases to solve downstream tasks. Via spectral analysis, CANEs draw analogies with Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA), a classical technique to project two-view data onto a correlated subspace. However, while CCA's objective is to compute shared view representations, CANEs are trained to solve a downstream task directly. We bound their output error under finite-sample covariance perturbations and show that it depends on controllable Lipschitz constants of the learned filters in place of the singular-value gap that governs the stability of CCA, thus guaranteeing better robustness. Experiments on seven datasets from brain imaging and motion sensing show that CANEs match or outperform single-view, two-view and CCA-based baselines, often with fewer parameters, and retain their performance when covariances are re-estimated from fewer samples.

Reportable Shortcuts with RLBWTs

Travis Gagie

Backward search over a run-length compressed Burrows-Wheeler transform (RLBWT) takes one step per pattern character, even when long stretches of the pattern match material that recurs throughout a highly repetitive collection. We describe shortcuts: for a precomputed set of pairs $(α,β)$ of strings, a backward search that has just matched $β$ and finds $α$ immediately to its left in the pattern can cross $α$ in one step. Since a shortcut is taken only after its pair has been recognized in the pattern, the search returns a report of the shortcuts it took along with the usual BWT interval. Our motivation is pangenome graphs, where such pairs mark the places where a pattern passes through a vertex, so the report gives the path a match takes through the graph. We work out the case of a single linear reference $R$, with $β$ ranging over the length-$\ell$ windows of $R$ starting at multiples of $\ell$, and $α$ over the $2^t \ell$ characters preceding such a window. We show that the search counts correctly, that under stated conditions it crosses a stretch of the pattern matching $m$ consecutive windows of $R$ with $O(\log m + m / 2^τ)$ shortcuts, where $2^τ\ell$ is the longest shortcut, and that the shortcuts can be built efficiently from the RLBWT. On the Pizza&Chili cere collection of 37 genomes, shortcuts make backward search 2.3 to 4.2 times faster on exact patterns of length 200 to 1000, and 1.7 to 2.0 times faster with 1% of the characters substituted, for 86% more space. On 11 gigabases of genomes of seven bacterial species, they make it 1.6 to 1.9 times faster on exact patterns for 32% more space. On whole chromosome 19 haplotypes against 16 to 64 others from the Human Pangenome Reference Consortium, shortcuts in both directions make Boyer-Moore-Li search for maximal exact matches of length at least 1000 about 8 times faster.

Machine-learned particle flow as a foundation model for collider physics

Farouk Mokhtar, Joosep Pata, Michael Kagan, Javier Duarte

The workflow from particle collision to physics analysis passes through a series of reconstruction steps that are traditionally modular and disconnected, with no shared representation linking low-level detector data to high-level analysis tasks. We show that casting event reconstruction as a machine learning problem naturally produces such a shared representation. We repurpose a machine learning model trained for particle-flow reconstruction (MLPF) to perform three distinct analysis tasks: jet flavor identification, jet energy regression, and missing momentum regression. By appending the per-particle latent representations learned during reconstruction as additional input features, we substantially improve over baselines that use conventional particle-level features alone. We further demonstrate that a single linear layer trained using only the latent representations achieves competitive performance against state-of-the-art baseline architectures, and outperforms the baseline for missing momentum regression with approximately 35 times fewer parameters. These results demonstrate that the latent representations learned during reconstruction encode essential physics information needed for downstream analysis, establishing MLPF as a foundation model and offering a concrete step toward an end-to-end pipeline from detector data to physics analysis.

SimForcing: Distilling Simulation Motion Priors into Real-Domain Robot World Models

Xiaodong Wang, Tianle Li, Chuanxin Song, Junliang Xie, Zhanmi Zhong, Suiying Wu, Peixi Peng

Action-conditioned robot world models must respond precisely to robot trajectories while preserving realistic visual dynamics, yet learning both from heterogeneous robot videos remains challenging. Simulation offers structured motion supervision, but appearance differences hinder direct transfer, and inaccurate simulation predictions can misguide real-video generation. We present SimForcing, a simulation-guided framework that uses simulation both as a source of transferable motion knowledge and as a controllable reference for prediction. First, we transfer motion knowledge from a simulation teacher through latent-motion distillation, aligning temporal changes in latent space to internalize motion priors while mitigating the influence of appearance differences. Second, we introduce multi-block simulation conditioning with condition dropout to exploit predicted simulation trajectories without relying excessively on their accuracy. Our simulation-conditioning classifier-free guidance scheme unifies these two ideas by balancing predictions based on internalized motion knowledge with those additionally guided by simulation latents. The jointly trained student generates both simulation conditions and real-domain videos, requiring no additional world model at inference. On Bridge, SimForcing achieves the best PSNR, SSIM, LPIPS, and FVD among the compared methods without external embodied pretraining. Evaluation on InternData-A1 further supports its applicability across robot datasets. Moreover, using our trained world model to initialize a vision-language-action model improves LIBERO success, suggesting its utility for downstream policy learning. https://github.com/Wang-Xiaodong1899/SimForcing

LifeVal: Evaluating AI Model Performance on Personalized Agentic Consumer Tasks

Jenny Yang, Elizabeth Proehl, Anjan Bharadwaj, Emily Fan, Charlotte Cole, James Kim, Noam Brown, Phoebe Thacker 等 10 位作者

We introduce LifeVal, a benchmark evaluating AI model performance on personalized agentic consumer tasks. LifeVal covers the most valuable life tasks that a personalized digital superassistant could automate, representing over 1.7 trillion US dollars in annual willingness-to-pay across 148 consumer task categories (e.g., managing finances, moving apartments, searching for a job, finding childcare). To construct our activity distribution, we conducted a new survey of willingness-to-pay for a digital superassistant across a demographically representative sample of over 3,800 consumers, cross-referencing our results against the American Time Use Survey (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025) and the Multinational Time Use Study (Fisher et al., 2025). For the most valuable consumer activities, we recruited task creators to create AI evaluation tasks personalized using real ChatGPT conversations and memories, reference files, and personal context. Task creators had to pass our expertise threshold (including personally completing the task multiple times and seeing the results through in their real lives for over a year) and also write a rubric, ensuring that our evaluation measured the best personalized completion for that task. All tasks had to pass at least three rounds of human quality-control before acceptance into our final evaluation sets.

Dynamic Shape Control of Soft Trunk Robots

Hehui Zheng, Marc Stampanoni, Roshan S. Kaundinya, Ronan Hinchet, George Haller, Robert K. Katzschmann

Controlling the shape profile of soft trunk robots extends their reach into complex regions of the workspace and enhances their use in practical applications. Recent advances in soft robot design have enabled soft trunk robots to achieve greater flexibility in conforming to complex shapes. Specifically, trunk robots whose geometries are designed as helicoids have been shown to enable extreme shape-changing capabilities. Their compliance makes them highly nonlinear, which in turn makes shape control difficult. On similar tendon-driven trunk robots, model-based controllers based on the theory of adiabatic spectral submanifolds (aSSMs) have achieved high accuracy in closed-loop end-effector tracking. We extend this approach by learning an aSSM model of the full body of a trimmed-helicoid soft trunk robot from data and use this in a model predictive control (MPC) scheme to demonstrate a range of shape control tasks on hardware. On closed-loop dynamic shape regulation, our method outperforms the available linear baselines by a factor of 10. In human-in-the-loop interactive demos, our method completes section-by-section shaping and balances a tennis ball for over 25 seconds, while the linear baselines fall short. A model-free reinforcement learning policy trained for 12 hours on hardware fails on the same balancing task. These results establish aSSM-based MPC as a practical route to full-body shape control on real soft hardware.

Second-Order Image Characterization with Distortion and Secrecy

Cao Daming

Image characterization relates coding budgets to the probability carried by source cells and their output images. At second order, refining a cell can reveal unavailable information, while a change of reference measure can alter the relevant likelihood fluctuations. We establish image bounds that account for both effects. A finite-block partition theorem bounds the cost of merging component images by the joint conditional information spectrum of their label. It preserves continuous second-order profiles when that cost is negligible on the square-root blocklength scale. For reconstruction constraints, cell-dependent reference measures retain the actual distortion deficits in a single likelihood. A Gaussian evaluation gives matching second-order rates for Heegard--Berger coding with one uninformed decoder in the strict both-active regime, common reconstruction under a joint agreement and distortion criterion, and two-stage refinement with side information absent at the first decoder. A structured binary source illustrates partition stability even when its global density and conditional-divergence deficits are linear in blocklength. Posterior-mass images also sharpen extraction after a public refinement by charging its residual information rather than its alphabet size. These results preserve the joint constraints and the observations available for choosing the local coding experiment.

Fast and Stable Triangular Inversion for Delta-Rule Linear Transformers

Aleksandros Sobczyk, Gioele Gottardo, Christos K. Matzoros, Mirko De Vita, Filip Skogh, Anastasios Zouzias, Jiawei Zhuang

Linear attention has emerged as a cornerstone for efficient long-context architectures, as evidenced by its integration into state-of-the-art open-source models including Qwen3.5/3.6, Kimi Linear/K3, and RWKV-7. Models that incorporate linear attention layers with the so-called Delta-Rule involve the inversion of triangular matrices as a core sub-routine. This operation often forms a performance bottleneck, and, due to its high-sensitivity to numerical errors, it can significantly deteriorate end-to-end model accuracy if it is not carefully implemented. This work provides a systematic analysis of both direct and iterative triangular inversion algorithms, targeting methods that are rich in matrix products, and, therefore, have the potential to efficiently utilize modern hardware. To that end, our analysis covers a broad spectrum of mathematical and practical aspects, with a heavy focus on numerical stability, computational complexity, and, ultimately, hardware efficiency and practical considerations. We provide a rigorous experimental evaluation to verify these properties in practical scenarios, and in low-precision floating-point representations, highlighting the strengths and limitations of each method. Performance benchmarks on NPUs reveal up to $4.3\times$ speed-up against the state-of-the-art implementations of SGLang for triangular matrix inversion, leading to significant performance improvements on the entire layer level, while maintaining end-to-end model accuracy.

FlashRelight: Portrait Video Relighting with Dynamic Lighting

Portrait video relighting aims to modify the illumination of a portrait video while preserving photorealism and temporal stability. The task becomes particularly challenging under dynamic lighting, where illumination direction, intensity, and color vary over time. To tackle this problem, we introduce FlashRelight, a novel two-stage framework for dynamic portrait video relighting. FlashRelight first suppresses the source illumination through delighting, and then synthesizes the target dynamic lighting on an illumination-neutral portrait video. FlashRelight supports three complementary control modalities: envmap sequences for explicit frame-level lighting control, dynamic lighting text for semantic illumination editing, and lighting reference videos for visual lighting transfer. Training follows a low-cost hybrid strategy that combines static one-light-at-a-time (OLAT) data with generated dynamic-lighting portrait videos, covering both controlled illumination variation and realistic portrait motion. Extensive experiments show that FlashRelight achieves temporally coherent and photorealistic dynamic relighting while enabling flexible cross-video lighting transfer. RCOMPSs: A Scalable Runtime System for R Code Execution on Manycore Systems

Xiran Zhang, Javier Conejero, Sameh Abdulah, Jorge Ejarque, Ying Sun, Rosa M. Badia, David E. Keyes, Marc G. Genton

R has become a cornerstone of scientific and statistical computing due to its extensive package ecosystem, expressive syntax, and strong support for reproducible analysis. However, as data sizes and computational demands grow, native R parallelism support remains limited. This paper presents RCOMPSs, a scalable runtime system that enables efficient parallel execution of R applications on multicore and manycore systems. RCOMPSs adopts a dynamic, task-based programming model, allowing users to write code in a sequential style, while the runtime automatically handles asynchronous task execution, dependency tracking, and scheduling across available resources. We present RCOMPSs using three representative data analysis algorithms, i.e., K-nearest neighbors (KNN) classification, K-means clustering, and linear regression and evaluate their performance on two modern HPC systems: KAUST Shaheen-III and Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) MareNostrum 5. Experimental results reveal that RCOMPSs demonstrates both strong and weak scalability on up to 128 cores per node and across 32 nodes. For KNN and K-means, parallel efficiency remains above 70\% in most settings, while linear regression maintains acceptable performance under shared and distributed memory configurations despite its deeper task dependencies. Overall, RCOMPSs significantly enhances the parallel capabilities of R with minimal, automated, and runtime-aware user intervention, making it a practical solution for large-scale data analytics in high-performance environments.

Digital sovereignty in professional translation workflows: a case study of migrating from Windows to Linux

Michael Farrell

This study examines digital sovereignty in professional translation through a screening of computer-assisted translation tools and translation management systems, and a case study of migrating a translator's workstation from Windows to Linux. The framework combines three principles - Control, Continuity and Exit - with three practical requirements: native Linux operation, independence from mandatory external services, and independent access to essential data and resources. Drawing on documentary evidence and the limited number of responses received from providers, the ecosystem screening distinguishes Linux accessibility from operational independence: browser-based platforms may remain dependent on provider-controlled infrastructure. The migration case demonstrates the feasibility of reconstructing one professional workflow around a locally operable Linux core, using LoopCAT, LibreOffice and locally run TranslateGemma, alongside tools for optical character recognition, communication, credential management and backup. Selected cloud services remained available where needed. The findings suggest that digital sovereignty depends on how workflow dependencies are organized, rather than on individual applications or operating systems. It does not require technological isolation, but meaningful control over essential components, continuity of work and practical exit options. The framework is tailored to the case examined here and may require adaptation to other professional workflows.

3D Pose Estimation in Projection Space via Pixel-level Visible Light Communication

Michikuni Eguchi, Takefumi Hiraki

Projector-based augmented reality enables natural interaction between users and devices by overlaying digital information onto the physical world through projected imagery. A key technical requirement of such systems is accurate positional alignment between the projector and the devices. Pixel-level Visible Light Communication (PVLC) achieves this alignment without external sensing infrastructure by embedding invisible spatial codes into each projected pixel through high-speed brightness modulation that preserves image quality. However, the information that PVLC transmits is inherently planar. PVLC has therefore been limited to devices moving on a flat surface and cannot estimate the 3D pose of devices in three-dimensional space, such as aerial robots. To extend PVLC-based pose estimation to three dimensions, we formulate it as a Perspective-n-Point (PnP) problem. The 2D pixel positions that four coplanar photosensors on the device receive via PVLC serve as the image points, and their known 3D layout provides the object points. Experiments show that the proposed system estimates 3D pose with a latency of approximately 8~ms and a 3D position RMSE of 19.2~mm after Kalman filtering. These results confirm the first realization of real-time 3D pose estimation coordinated with high-quality projected image content without external sensing infrastructure.

Exact Transport-Information Correspondence for Distribution-Adaptive Discretization

Koretaka Yuge

Discretization of continuous probability distributions is an operation on the sample space, and the structure induced by this operation cannot generally be determined solely from information geometry. In our recent work on unavoidable canonical nonlinearity (UCN), we established a non-arbitrary connection between the transport cost associated with discretization and the information-geometric indistinguishability of continuous probability distributions. Through the transport-information correspondence, the UCN quantify the information-theoretic cost due to discretization as the expected Kullback-Leibler divergence between nearby continuous distributions associated with the discretization geometry. In the original UCN construction, discretization is implemented by transporting the probability mass within each cell to its geometric centroid. The resulting transport-information correspondence, however, is derived under specific conditions involving the cell geometry, spatial coverage, and the vanishing-cell-scale limit. In this work, we introduce an alternative local-map discretization scheme in which the probability mass within each cell is transported to its own probability-weighted centroid. This change in the representative-point selection enables an exact expression for the transport cost of each cell in terms of the covariance matrix of its conditional probability distribution and the Fisher metric of the underlying continuous family. We establish an exact correspondence between the resulting transport cost and the expectation of the associated Fisher-induced quadratic form, without requiring uniform cell geometry, complete coverage of the sample space, or an infinitesimal cell-scale limit. The proposed construction thus generalizes the transport-information correspondence to finite-scale discretization using arbitrary collections of non-overlapping bounded convex sets.

Academic contexts have changed due to the fast expansion of communication technology, affecting information access, sharing, and dissemination. Light Fidelity (LiFi) is a new technology that may transform academic library connections in this changing environment. This article examines how LiFi can accelerate data transmission, secure data, and provide a more dynamic and collaborative learning environment to spur creativity. Academic libraries may accelerate information interchange using visible light communication with LiFi technology. LiFi is the solution for the increasing need of digital access it adress the situation by enabling faster research activities and enhancing collaboration among students, faculty, and researchers. Present paper discusses the importance and application of LiFi in libraries.

Private Vulnerability Testing for User Oversharing

Alexander Boyd, Daniel Gardham, Nishanth Sastry, Suparna De

Users can inadvertently increase their vulnerability to privacy attacks by oversharing personal information. In particular, the combination of individually innocuous attributes can place a user in a sufficiently small population to enable linkage or re-identification attacks. We present a privacy-preserving mechanism that allows users to determine whether the information they disclose places them below a predefined population threshold, without revealing their query or the data of other users. Our setting presents several practical challenges: users contributing data may be offline when queries are made, queries may select arbitrary subsets of attributes, and neither server should learn the queried population or its size. We address these challenges using secret-shared data and queries, private equality testing, and secure threshold computation. Our protocol provides computational privacy against a malicious client and semi-honest, non-colluding servers, while supporting arbitrary queries and dynamic database updates. We define reactive $f$-privacy for a dynamically evolving database and prove that our construction satisfies it, with the sequence of permitted threshold outputs defining the information available to the adversary across an execution. We optimise the protocol using oblivious-transfer extensions and pre-computation, achieving sub-second online query times for 96-bit queries on datasets of up to one million records.

Prospective Memory for Proactive LLM Agents

Yuanchen Bei, Zhining Liu, Tianxin Wei, Weizhi Zhang, Zhichen Zeng, Philip S. Yu, Hendrik Hamann, Jingrui He 等 9 位作者

Most memory systems for LLM agents are retrospective, preserving and retrieving past information to inform current decisions. Proactive agents, however, also require prospective memory: retaining future-directed intentions and realizing them when appropriate opportunities arise, even without explicit requests. Crucially, remembering the right intention does not guarantee acting at the right time: a related observation may call for waiting, while a later cue may make the same intention actionable. Inspired by cognitive theories of human prospective memory, we introduce Pro-Memory, a memory framework that separates maintaining future intentions from deciding when and how to realize them. Pro-Memory preserves pending objectives linked to their supporting evidence, assesses new observations against their original goals and activation conditions, and coordinates appropriate contributions with the agent's ongoing actions. It further updates intention states based on actions actually issued or evidence of resolution, while an experience memory distills feedback from completed episodes into guidance for future decisions. Experiments on two benchmarks spanning delayed-intention tasks and open-ended proactive assistance demonstrate consistent improvements in proactive task performance over representative memory approaches across multiple LLM backbones, while limiting unnecessary interventions.

Otter Weather: Skillful and Computationally Efficient Medium-Range Weather Forecasting

Cristiana Diaconu, Jonas Scholz, Aliaksandra Shysheya, Stratis Markou, Payel Mukhopadhyay, Miles Cranmer, Richard E. Turner

State-of-the-art medium-range AI weather models can outperform traditional Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) but require massive training budgets. This restricts usage for under-resourced groups and severely limits fast model iteration. Here we develop Otter Weather, a highly efficient spatiotemporal forecasting model designed to democratise high-performance weather prediction with AI. Evaluated on ERA5 reanalysis data at 1.5° resolution using standard WeatherBench protocols, the Otter family significantly advances the skill-compute Pareto frontier. The deterministic version outperforms the best NWP baseline by 9.6% at a 24-hour lead time while requiring fewer than 3.5 A100-days for training. It provides a 2x efficiency gain over lightweight AI models and a 100-fold reduction in compute compared to resource-intensive frontier architectures. We extend these efficiency gains into probabilistic forecasting by training via the Continuous Ranked Probability Score (CRPS). Scaling to a larger architecture, Otter-XL achieves a 9.7% CRPS improvement over the IFS ENS baseline. This yields an almost two-fold increase in predictive skill over comparable lightweight models at similar compute budgets. Otter-XL also outperforms frontier architectures like GenCast by over 2%, while using an order of magnitude less compute. Finally, Otter is applied out-of-the-box to a complex acoustic scattering PDE task where it outperforms a state-of-the-art foundation modelling approach, suggesting that the advances made here might apply across a range of scientific domains.

Rate-Fidelity Control for Wide-Area Quantum Links

Connor Clayton, Cory Nunn, Quinn Carmack, Wayne McKenzie, Anne Marie Richards, Xiaodi Wu, Bobby Bhattacharjee

Quantum network links must distribute entanglement at high rates while satisfying application-specified fidelity demands. However, wide-area deployed fiber links suffer from polarization drift which destabilizes end-to-end fidelity and forces periodic compensation. Current deployments often use active stabilization with fixed control policies, and improvements generally stem from advances in quantum hardware. Meanwhile, software control remains relatively underexplored. Here, we formulate quantum link operation as a joint control problem over tunable rate-fidelity tradeoffs and uncontrollable link drift. From this framework, we construct a link control protocol that dynamically adapts source pump power and polarization compensation to maximize entanglement distribution rate subject to a minimum fidelity constraint. We evaluate the protocol through trace-driven simulations driven by data from a 64 km deployed optical fiber. Compared with optimized static policies, our adaptive controller improves mean entanglement distribution rate by 14% over a 24 hour trace, without requiring any offline policy optimization. Our results show that software-based physical layer control can provide a practical mechanism for improving near-term quantum link performance without requiring additional quantum hardware.
