SkillDRE: Dual-Stage Red-Team Evolution of Agent Skills via Pre-Execution and Runtime Feedback

Pengyu Zhu, Jingyi Yang, Yi Liu, Li Sun, Sen Su

Agent skills package instructions, executable code, and task-specific resources into reusable artifacts that agents can improve using execution feedback. The same mechanism also enables attackers to evolve malicious skills, making them more effective and less detectable. However, a candidate skill may pass pre-execution scanning yet fail to realize its target under runtime defenses, while a revision that repairs execution may introduce new scanner findings. We introduce SkillDRE, a fully automated framework for evolving complete malicious skill packages through a dual-stage feedback loop. Given a benign task and its associated skills, SkillDRE autonomously constructs and validates a task-conditioned malicious objective and a verifiable judge rule. It then holds both fixed while evolving the skill implementation, with preservation of legitimate task capability. SkillDRE combines scanner-guided evolution with runtime-guided refinement informed by execution outcomes observed under runtime defense. Each runtime-guided revision returns to the pre-execution stage for rescanning and further optimization before re-execution, forming a cross-stage closed loop. Evaluated on SkillsBench across four victim models, SkillDRE achieves an average attack success rate of 45.28%, exceeding the strongest baseline by 40.3%, while its final submitted skills receive no SkillScan findings and largely preserve benign-task performance. These results show that two-stage defense feedback can serve as a useful learning signal for adaptive red teaming and that evaluating either defense stage in isolation can miss the resulting attack capability. Geometric Morphology Learning: Empowering Foundation Models from Structure to Spacetime Intelligence

Li Sun, Philip S. Yu

Geometry is the very form that connects space, time, and matter, serving as the fundamental fabric of the physical world, from continuous fields to discrete structures. Despite its importance, deep learning is inherently blind to geometry. Riemannian geometry stands as a well-established mathematical foundation for studying geometry, yet it remains largely incompatible with deep learning architectures. To bridge this gap, we establish a new learning framework--Geometric Morphology Learning--that learns geometric or topological structures, shapes or conformations for representation learning, reasoning and action modeling. Moving beyond early attempts limited to specific geometric priors, this theory centers on modeling the intrinsic geometry of objects and learning from such geometric or topological knowledge. Specifically, we construct a neural bundle, a unified scaffolding linking local and global structures, and formulate differentiable operators, including connection and curvature, thereby enabling the study of geometry with advanced geometric concepts such as holonomy and cohomology. Consequently, Geometric Morphology Learning opens new horizons in foundation models, reasoning and planning, graph modeling, physical simulation, PDE systems, and dynamics, marking a fundamental shift toward instilling systematic geometry in artificial intelligence.

Efficient Deep Gaussian Process Surrogates via Mini-Batch Latent MAP Estimation

Chun-Yi Chang, Chih-Li Sung

Deep Gaussian processes (DGPs) are flexible surrogate models for computer experiments with nonstationary response surfaces, but inference over their latent representations remains computationally challenging. Existing methods typically rely on variational inference or Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), which impose variational-family assumptions or require costly posterior sampling. We propose the latent maximum-a-posteriori deep Gaussian process (LaMP-DGP), which uses gradient-based optimization to obtain MAP estimates of the latent representations and enables efficient probabilistic prediction through linked-GP calculations. To scale LaMP-DGP to large datasets, we develop a mini-batch optimization algorithm and, under a polynomial mini-batch bias-decay condition, establish a stationarity bound for latent-state optimization that motivates a growing batch-size schedule. Across numerical experiments and real-data analyses, LaMP-DGP provides consistently competitive predictive performance relative to doubly stochastic variational inference, stochastic gradient Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, and fully Bayesian Vecchia DGP inference. Computationally, LaMP-DGP is substantially faster than the Vecchia MCMC approach while remaining broadly competitive with the stochastic-gradient alternatives. These results position LaMP-DGP as a competitive and computationally efficient alternative for DGP inference. An R package, "LaMPDGP", is available for implementing the proposed method.

Can Complementary Signals Bridge Similarity Islands? Manifold-Augmented Graph Embedding for Multimodal Recommendation

Zhenye Yang, Jinpeng Chen, Wenbo Fu, Jun Ma, Huan Li, Qimin Zhou, Tao Wang, Li Sun 等 9 位作者

Multimodal Recommender Systems (MMRS) leverage rich item features to mitigate data sparsity, yet similarity-driven graph construction and propagation can favor semantically similar substitutes over functionally related complements. When behavioral associations connect semantically distant items, complementary signals can remain geometrically isolated, yielding fragmented "Similarity Islands" and semantic drift when standard propagation is applied. To overcome these limitations, we propose MAGE (Manifold-Augmented Graph Embedding), a framework for personalized multimodal ranking that decouples complementarity modeling into offline geometric warping and online topological propagation. The offline phase enhances item representations by extracting complement-aware residual directions via a Soft Conceptor mechanism and injecting them under a local gap-preserving constraint, incorporating co-purchase evidence while controlling the magnitude of geometric perturbation. Synergistically, the online phase employs an asymmetric dual-stream GNN that treats visual features as stable anchors and augmented textual features as flexible probes, fused through a self-calibrated cross-modal mechanism to reconcile shared semantics and modality-specific residual cues. Extensive experiments on four Amazon datasets show that MAGE yields consistent improvements over strong multimodal recommendation baselines. Together with the supporting analyses in the appendix, these results suggest that geometry-aware augmentation can alleviate the semantic mismatch that arises in complementary recommendation settings. Our code is available at https://github.com/Alex-bupt/mage.

DynEdit: Dynamic Entropy-Guided Sequential Editing for Large Language Models

Jinhu Fu, Yan Bai, Yihang Lou, Li Sun, Jiahong Wu, Xiangxiang Chu, Sen Su

Knowledge editing aims to update outdated or incorrect knowledge in large language models without full retraining. Existing parameter-editing methods remain limited for long-sequence knowledge: single-point editors provide insufficient coverage for extended targets, while fixed chunk-based editors distribute editing effort uniformly across rigid predefined windows, failing to prioritize difficult, information-dense tokens. In this work, we show that token entropy is closely associated with both editing difficulty and semantic importance: high-entropy regions are harder to edit and often contain key factual content. Motivated by this observation, we propose DynEdit, a dynamic framework for long-sequence knowledge editing. DynEdit uses token-level entropy to guide non-uniform sliding, increasing the coverage of difficult high-entropy regions, and further applies entropy-guided token-level optimization to strengthen updates on information-dense tokens within each editing window. Experiments on three benchmarks and two backbone models show that DynEdit consistently outperforms competitive baselines across diverse long-form editing settings, achieving gains of up to +14.0 BLEU points on challenging paraphrase queries and near-saturated semantic scores on several diverse knowledge domains.

Learning to Edit Knowledge via Instruction-based Chain-of-Thought Prompting

Jinhu Fu, Yan Bai Peking University, Tsinghua University, Longzhu He Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Yihang Lou Huawei Technologies Ltd., Yanxiao Zhao, Li Sun Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications, Sen Su Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications

Large language models (LLMs) can effectively handle outdated information through knowledge editing. However, current approaches face two key limitations: (I) Poor generalization: Most approaches rigidly inject new knowledge without ensuring that the model can use it effectively to solve practical problems. (II) Narrow scope: Current methods focus primarily on structured fact triples, overlooking the diverse unstructured forms of factual information (e.g., news, articles) prevalent in real-world contexts. To address these challenges, we propose a new paradigm: teaching LLMs to edit knowledge via Chain of Thoughts (CoTs) reasoning (CoT2Edit). We first leverage language model agents for both structured and unstructured edited data to generate CoTs, building high-quality instruction data. The model is then trained to reason over edited knowledge through supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO). At inference time, we integrate Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to dynamically retrieve relevant edited facts for real-time knowledge editing. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves strong generalization across six diverse knowledge editing scenarios with just a single round of training on three open-source language models.

From "Aha Moments" to Controllable Thinking: Toward Meta-Cognitive Reasoning in LRMs via Decoupled Reasoning and Control

Rui Ha Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Rui Pu, Chaozhuo Li Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Li Sun Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications, Sen Su Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications

Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) can exhibit step-by-step reasoning, reflection, and backtracking, but these behaviors are often unregulated, leading to overthinking. As a result, LRMs continue generating redundant reasoning even after reaching high-confidence conclusions. This increases inference cost and latency, limiting practical deployment. The root cause is the absence of an intrinsic mechanism to monitor the reasoning state and decide when to continue, backtrack, or stop. We propose MERA, a meta-cognitive reasoning framework that decouples reasoning from control to enable independent optimization of control strategies. MERA constructs high-quality reasoning–control supervision data via a takeover-based pipeline, and transforms long-horizon traces into structured reasoning–control alternating sequences for training. The model is trained with supervised fine-tuning to internalize the structured separation, and further optimized with Control-Segment Policy Optimization (CSPO), which combines segment-wise GRPO with control masking to focus learning on control segments. Experiments across reasoning benchmarks show that MERA improves both efficiency and accuracy.

SEE: Signal Embedding Energy for Quantifying Noise Interference in Large Audio Language Models

Yuanhe Zhang, Jiayu Tian, Yibo Zhang Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Shilinlu Yan, Liang Lin, Zhenhong Zhou, Li Sun Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications, Sen Su Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications

Large Audio Language Models (LALMs) have been widely applied in real-time scenarios, such as in-car assistants and online meeting comprehension. In practice, audio inputs are often corrupted by device and environmental noise, leading to performance degradation. However, existing LALM studies on noise lack quantitative analysis and rely mainly on intuition and empirical observation, thus failing to understand practical robustness. To address this issue, we introduce Signal Embedding Energy (SEE), a method for quantifying the impact of noise intensity on LALM inputs, enabling the differentiation of LALM robustness in real-world deployments. SEE introduces a perspective based on structured activation subspaces derived from the model’s internal representations, which more accurately captures its perception of noise than raw audio features. Across experiments, SEE exhibits a strong correlation with LALM performance, achieving a correlation of 0.98. Surprisingly, traditional audio denoising methods are only marginally effective for LALMs, and, in some cases, even increase SEE and impair performance. This suggests a mismatch between speech-centric denoising objectives and the noise sensitivity of modern LALMs. Therefore, we propose a mitigation strategy derived from SEE to denoise LALM inputs, outperforming existing denoising methods. This paper introduces a novel metric for noise quantification in LALMs, providing guidance for robustness improvements in real-world deployments.
