Fluidic Body: Swarm Robots as a Fluid Extension of the Hand

Michikuni Eguchi, Shigeo Yoshida, Mai Nishimura, Takefumi Hiraki

原文摘要

Swarm robots have attracted growing interest as a physical interface for human--computer interaction, since a swarm can reshape its formation to fit the objects and surroundings it works with. For a human operator, however, adapting the swarm's behavior remains difficult. Most existing methods require the user to specify where the swarm should go, and they offer no intuitive way to change the collective's behavior as each task demands. We present Fluidic Body, a system that lets a person operate a swarm of fluid-imitating robots as an extension of the hand. The system places a virtual fluid between the hand and the swarm, and the user adapts the swarm's behavior to each task by changing the fluid's properties through simple hand movements. When the user opens the hand, the swarm becomes soft enough to deform and flow around obstacles. Closing the hand turns it into a hard, cohesive body that can push objects. We evaluated the controller's performance and its operability in two simulation experiments and one demonstration with physical robots. First, our controller handled both obstacle avoidance and object transportation better than an existing method that behaves the same way in every task. Second, in a VR user study, 17 participants completed the combined avoidance-and-transportation task faster and more reliably than with that method. They also reported a lower workload and a stronger sense of agency. Finally, this experience carried over to physical robots in a real-world demonstration (88 participants). These results suggest that treating a swarm as a fluid, a material people already understand, allows a robot swarm to work as a deformable extension of the human body.

CLAP: Direct VLM-to-VLA Adaptation via Language-Action Grounding

Yuri Ishitoya, Jeremy Siburian, Masashi Hamaya, Haruto Suzuki, Kuniaki Saito, Toshihiko Fukushima, Cristian C. Beltran-Hernandez, Mai Nishimura

原文摘要

Vision-language-action models (VLAs) inherit semantic capabilities from pretrained VLMs, yet large-scale post-training on robot data and architectural modifications can reshape the backbone so extensively that it becomes difficult to isolate what the VLM contributes to control. Directly converting pretrained VLMs into VLAs with minimal architectural change offers a more transparent path to understanding how VLM capabilities transfer across model scales. The core obstacle is output-distribution mismatch: predicting actions as bare numeric token sequences moves generation away from the VLM's pretrained language distribution, degrading the capabilities we seek to preserve. To address this, we propose CLAP (Causal Language-Action Prediction), which prepends each numeric action sequence with a natural-language action description, causally conditioning precise action-token prediction on a language-action plan without modifying the backbone architecture. With only 4-5 hours of training, 2B CLAP achieves 90.8% on LIBERO (+14.9 pt over VLA-0) and improves robustness on LIBERO-PRO under language, object, and spatial perturbations. Ablations attribute the gains to action-grounded language semantics, and on a real UR5e robot 2B CLAP reaches 60% success against 15% for matched VLA-0. We release CLAP at 0.8B, 2B, and 4B as an open-weight, multi-scale compact VLA family from a single VLM lineage, enabling controlled analysis of VLM-to-VLA capability transfer.

Can Compact Language Models Search Like Agents? Distillation-Guided Policy Optimization for Preserving Agentic RAG Capabilities

Rikuto Kotoge Osaka University, Mai Nishimura OMRON SINIC X, Jiaxin Ma OMRON SINIC X Corp.

原文摘要

Reinforcement Learning has emerged as a dominant post-training approach to elicit agentic RAG behaviors such as search and planning from language models. Despite its success with larger models, applying RL to compact models (e.g., 0.5-1B parameters) presents unique challenges. The compact models exhibit poor initial performance, resulting in sparse rewards and unstable training. To overcome these difficulties, we propose Distillation-Guided Policy Optimization (DGPO), which employs cold-start initialization from teacher demonstrations and continuous teacher guidance during policy optimization. To understand how compact models preserve agentic behavior, we introduce Agentic RAG Capabilities (ARC), a fine-grained metric analyzing reasoning, search coordination, and response synthesis. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that DGPO enables compact models to achieve sophisticated agentic search behaviors, even outperforming the larger teacher model in some cases. DGPO makes agentic RAG feasible in computing resource-constrained environments.
