EEG-Captioner: Grounding EEG-to-Language Generation in Fundamental Signal Properties

Leyuan Jin, Jiahao Mei, Yixuan Yuan, Shimeng Li, Mengyue Wu, Yue Ding

Electroencephalography (EEG)-to-language models offer a promising approach for translating complex neural signals into human-readable descriptions. However, generating plausible language does not necessarily demonstrate that a model has learned to interpret the underlying EEG signal. A direct way to assess such interpretation is to probe objectively measurable properties of the signal itself. We therefore construct an EEG-language dataset of 160,781 segments annotated with signal-level question answering (QA) pairs, where each question targets one of five property families and requires a quantitative comparison involving spectral, spatial, temporal, or lateral signal properties. Each segment is also paired with a feature-grounded EEG caption. We further propose a Dual-Domain EEG Encoder that jointly models temporal waveforms and spectral-spatial representations, and introduce EEG-Captioner, a unified EEG-to-language framework trained with both signal-level QA and EEG caption supervision. Experiments show that the proposed encoder achieves the highest overall macro-averaged balanced accuracy (Macro-BA) among the compared EEG encoders, while EEG-Captioner achieves a Macro-BA of 88.81% on signal-level QA and improves caption factual consistency from 82.06% to 83.46% over caption-only language adaptation, demonstrating the complementary benefits of signal-level QA and caption supervision. MATCHA: A Chinese Multi-Disorder Mental Health Dataset with Cross-Lingual Analyses on Social Media

Bingrui Jin, Baihan Li, Zitong Li, Kunyao Lan, Shimeng Li, Kenny Q. Zhu, Mengyue Wu

Mental health research on social media has been dominated by English-language datasets and DSM-5-centered resources, limiting cross-lingual and cross-cultural understanding of online mental health expression. We introduce MATCHA, the first Chinese multi-disorder mental health dataset that links disorder-specific Weibo Super-Topic communities with users' broader public timelines. MATCHA covers seven DSM-5 disorders and a control group, comprising 46,025 cohort-level users and 1.8 million posts. The dataset distinguishes users with explicit self-disclosure evidence from broader disorder-related participants through an LLM-assisted annotation pipeline, and is released in a rigorously de-identified, controlled-access format. Using MATCHA, we analyze behavioral, linguistic, symptom-related, and life-event-related patterns across disorders, and conduct cross-lingual comparisons with Twitter-STMHD. Our analyses show that Weibo Super-Topics function as concentrated spaces for affective and health-related expression, while cross-platform differences between Weibo and Twitter often exceed cross-disorder variation. MATCHA provides a new resource for community-aware and cross-lingual mental health NLP research.

Learning to Remember: Advances in Memory Mechanisms for Large Language Models

Chenye Han, Hongche Yu, Mengyue Wu, Dell Zhang, Jixiang Luo

Memory has become a central mechanism for extending large language models (LLMs) beyond fixed context windows, stateless interaction, and static parametric knowledge. This survey organizes the literature around three complementary dimensions: the life cycle of memory, the storage substrate, and the system role that memory plays in LLM-based agents, while using cognitive-science-inspired memory concepts as a lightweight conceptual motivation rather than as a separate technical contribution or implementation family. On this basis, we distinguish three mechanism families: nonparametric memory, where information is stored outside model parameters in text, graph, multimodal, or database-like structures; parametric memory, where information is stored or accessed through activations, key-value caches, learned modules, adapter-based parameterizations, or model weights; and memory for agent evolution, where stored experiences support reinforcement learning, continual learning, procedural reuse, context engineering, and agent harness design. Evaluation is treated as a separate cross-cutting component rather than as a memory mechanism. Unlike surveys that focus primarily on retrieval-augmented generation or long-context modeling, this paper emphasizes the full memory life cycle: construction, maintenance, retrieval, consolidation, forgetting, governance, and evaluation. By aligning conceptual motivations, computational memory mechanisms, benchmarks, and deployment concerns, the survey provides a structured roadmap for designing memory-augmented LLM agents that are persistent, adaptive, auditable, and safe to update over time.
