AI agents are playing an increasingly important role in physics research. However, existing physics benchmarks only evaluate fixed questions, isolated sub-tasks, or paper reproduction with given solutions, and rarely check research quality alongside correctness. We introduce FrontierPhysics, an end-to-end benchmark with 56 tasks made by 42 physicists based on their own research, covering nine domains across theoretical, computational, and experimental physics. Each task requires agents to review the literature, develop a research plan, conduct research and experiments, and produce structured outputs and scientific manuscripts. Combining deterministic verifiers with expert-authored rubrics, FrontierPhysics evaluates whether agents' research is correct and publishable. Across 22 models in 26 configurations, no configuration passes more than 46 of its 168 rollouts. Manual review of agent trajectories shows that frontier agents' main weaknesses are insufficiently rigorous reasoning and limited expert intuition, rather than gaps in physics knowledge or execution errors.

Subpolynomial-Query Proximal Sampling Beyond Log-Concavity

Wei Guo, Bo Yuan, Ye He, Jiaming Liang, Molei Tao, Yongxin Chen

原文摘要

We study the gradient query complexity of sampling from a density $π(x)\propto\mathrm{e}^{-V(x)}$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $V$ has a $β$-Lipschitz gradient but need not be convex. Our approach uses the proximal sampler, which alternates Gaussian perturbation with sampling a position conditional on the noisy observation. We implement its observation chain using the high-order noisy conditional sampler of [OpenAI 2026], obtaining improved dimension dependence under functional inequalities. If $π$ satisfies a log-Sobolev inequality (LSI) with constant $α$, then for every fixed $ν>0$, there is a finite constant $C_ν$ depending only on $ν$ such that the algorithm returns a sample within total-variation distance $\varepsilon$ using at most $C_νκ(d+κ+\varepsilon^{-1}+\|\nabla V(x_0)\|^2/β)^ν$ queries, where $κ=β/α$ and $x_0$ is an arbitrary reference point for initialization. The analysis controls center-dependent local errors along exact proximal histories and removes the final observation noise by conditional decoding. Under a Poincaré inequality (PI), we obtain a corresponding guarantee from a warm start with a known bound on its Rényi divergence. An oracle lower bound shows that a stationary point alone, which suffices under LSI, is insufficient under PI.

Multi-Draft On-Policy Distillation for Diffusion Drafters

Petr Molodyk, Yuchen Zhu, Jaemoo Choi, Molei Tao, Yongxin Chen

原文摘要

Speculative decoding is used to reduce the inference cost of language models. One-step diffusion drafters propose a block of multiple tokens in parallel, reducing the sequential cost of speculative decoding. On-policy distillation trains these drafters using verifier feedback on their own proposals. However, parallel drafting makes this feedback difficult to use: the drafter predicts each token without observing the preceding tokens sampled within the same block, while the verifier conditions its prediction on those tokens. Different sampled prefixes therefore give different verifier targets for the same drafter prediction. We show that distilling against these targets separately can suppress tokens that are plausible after some prefixes but unlikely after others, harming draft acceptance. We explain the effects of this mismatch and introduce Multi-Draft On-Policy Distillation (MDraft), a new parallel drafter distillation method which samples several draft blocks from the same context and aggregates the verifier's full-vocabulary conditionals across their prefixes. We use all the drafts to collect information from the verifier, allowing support from alternative prefixes to influence the training target. The resulting algorithm improves the acceptance length of a parallel drafter beyond the level of pre-training, and alleviates the effects of the distributional mismatch. MDraft changes only training, retaining the drafter's architecture and inference procedure, allowing the resulting drafter to be used as-is in place of the pretrained checkpoint. Experiments on a suite of mathematical, coding, and conversational tasks show longer accepted drafts than prior distillation methods.

A Deep Learning Framework for TTV Characterization: A Case Study of the Kepler-88 System

Chen Chen, Jiapeng Gao, Gongjie Li, Lingkai Kong, Molei Tao

原文摘要

Transit timing variation (TTV) provides rich information about the mass and orbital properties of exoplanets, which are often obtained by solving an inverse problem via Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). In this paper, we design a new data-driven approach, which potentially can be applied to problems that are hard to traditional MCMC methods, such as the case with only one planet transiting. Specifically, we use a deep learning approach to predict the parameters of non-transit companion for the single transit system with transit information (i.e., TTV, and Transit Duration Variation (TDV)) as input. This approach is constructed using the Transformer-based architecture that can extract long-range interactions from TTV sequential data. We focus on two-planet systems based on Kepler-88 as a starting point, with the inner planet fixed to the properties of Kepler-88 and the mass and orbital elements of the outer planet varied. Applying to Kepler-88, we obtained an overall fractional error of $\lesssim$10\% on semi-major axis and eccentricity, and $\sim 10-30\%$ on planet mass (assuming that the stellar and transiting planet parameters are known), based on a training set of a million simulations. When applied to the test set, our model achieves low fractional errors of less than a few percent for systems with TTV semi-amplitudes ranging from $\sim 0.3$ s to $\sim 5$ min. Extending our approach to a broader range of planetary architectures, including systems with substantially weaker or stronger TTV signals and those containing additional planets or stellar companions, remains an important direction for future work.
