When Model Complexity Matters in Cross-Subject Naturalistic fMRI Prediction

Junhao Zhao, Jacob Kang, Colin Kurniawan, David Simberg, Nan Xu

原文摘要

Increasingly complex neural models predict blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) responses to naturalistic stimuli, but the predictive value of this added complexity remains unclear. We ask when pretrained stimulus representations help and how much downstream complexity is needed, with and without recent measured BOLD history. We compare linear diagnostic references and nonlinear predictors across HCP movie fMRI (154 subjects), BOLD Moments (10 subjects), and Algonauts 2025 (4 subjects). Under a shared offline protocol, models are fitted on training subjects and evaluated on held-out subjects viewing largely familiar stimuli, without refitting. Pretrained visual features generally improve prediction over raw pixels; for linear autoregression, this advantage becomes more pronounced over longer rollouts (recursive predictions without additional measured BOLD). Measured BOLD history provides substantial gains that generally diminish {as rollouts lengthen}. Nonlinear stimulus-only predictors can improve on linear readouts, whereas linear autoregression provides a strong history-conditioned baseline. Controls examine context length, regularization, fitting procedures, and model capacity. Regional response consistency across subjects is associated with held-out prediction accuracy, while less consistent regions tend to gain more from measured history. In paired simulations with fixed linear neural dynamics, slower hemodynamic responses generally sustain high temporal prediction correlations over longer rollouts, illustrating how the observation process can contribute to predictive persistence. Together, these findings support evaluating stimulus representations and downstream complexity separately, using history-conditioned linear prediction as a diagnostic reference under matched inputs and measurement availability.

Meet Students Where They Are: Student-Prefix Teacher Adaptation for On-Policy Distillation

Xue Zhang, Songming Zhang, Yunlong Liang, Fandong Meng, Yufeng Chen, Jinan Xu

原文摘要

On-policy distillation (OPD) mitigates the student's exposure bias by optimizing on student-generated trajectories. However, student-generated prefixes may contain reasoning errors or follow patterns unfamiliar to the teacher, undermining the reliability of its token-level supervision. This degradation becomes more pronounced as prefixes grow longer. To address this teacher-side distribution mismatch, we propose Student-Prefix Teacher Adaptation (SPTA), which adapts the teacher to the states on which it is queried during distillation. Specifically, before OPD starts, we collect student rollout prefixes with random lengths and continually train the teacher to continue from the prefixes using reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR). By treating each prefix as context and rewarding correct final answers, the teacher learns to recover from student-induced states rather than imitate the student's reasoning. Then, the adapted teacher is used for standard OPD, with no changes to the distillation objective. Experiments on mathematical reasoning benchmarks show that our SPTA improves average student performance over standard OPD and OPD with task-level RLVR-adapted teachers. These results highlight the importance of adapting teachers not only to solve problems independently, but also to provide reliable guidance on the states their students actually visit.

A playable, programmable game world must maintain persistent state, enforce executable rules, and support extensible gameplay mechanics. Existing video world models can generate plausible combat, yet struggle to keep hit reactions and health updates consistent with game rules. We introduce Fight World Model (FWM), which separates rule-governed combat execution from video rendering. An executable engine maintains state and resolves interactions. A deterministic compiler encodes these outcomes and attempted actions in a spatially and temporally aligned interaction proxy. The proxy aligns action and skill windows, brief hit reactions, and persistent health by fighter identity and timing. These cues can be controlled separately to render interactions under modified rules. Identity-bound references preserve character appearance across side switches. We train FWM on FightWorld Corpus, spanning 52 skill effects, 187 character-appearance variants, and 15 arenas. Without retraining the renderer, FWM supports damage scaling, limited-hit immunity, lifesteal, and multi-stage skill mechanisms beyond the native game. It also allows character and arena customization. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of FWM, which outperforms existing game world models in action fidelity, hit reactions, health-state consistency, and character appearance preservation. PosePlaner: Denoising Any Feed-Forward Pose Predictor from Pairwise Planar Geometry

Yihang Chen, Bin Tan, Yujun Shen, Yinghao Xu, Nan Xue

原文摘要

Recent multi-view Transformers (e.g., DUSt3R and VGGT) have advanced 3D reconstruction by scaling training data and model capacity from two views to many views and long sequences, subsuming the classical SfM/SLAM pipeline of feature extraction, matching, and pose estimation in a single feed-forward pass. Yet this subsumption hides the interfaces between pipeline stages---correspondences, geometry, and pose are entangled in a single forward pass, leaving supervised fine-tuning as the major path to improvement and offering no mechanism to correct predictions from geometric evidence at test time. We propose PosePlaner to close this gap by reviving the classical coupling between correspondences and pose via flow matching, treating pose refinement as a conditional generation problem that takes coarse geometric matches and initial pose as input condition and fuses the resulting pose hypotheses into a single refined estimate, providing a continuous, data-driven analog of RANSAC voting. Our method is trained efficiently on two-view data, yet serves as a periodic refiner for streaming n-view pose estimators with no retraining. Empirically, it corrects failures of feed-forward predictors, substantially improves correspondence-based solvers, and reduces accumulated drift in long streaming sequences.

原文摘要

This paper addresses metric 3D reconstruction of indoor scenes by exploiting their inherent geometric regularities with compact representations. Using planar 3D primitives - a well-suited representation for man-made environments - we introduce PLANA3R, a pose-free framework for metric Planar 3D Reconstruction from unposed two-view images. Our approach employs Vision Transformers to extract a set of sparse planar primitives, estimate relative camera poses, and supervise geometry learning via planar splatting, where gradients are propagated through high-resolution rendered depth and normal maps of primitives. Unlike prior feedforward methods that require 3D plane annotations during training, PLANA3R learns planar 3D structures without explicit plane supervision, enabling scalable training on large-scale stereo datasets using only depth and normal annotations. We validate PLANA3R on multiple indoor-scene datasets with metric supervision and demonstrate strong generalization to out-of-domain indoor environments across diverse tasks under metric evaluation protocols, including 3D surface reconstruction, depth estimation, and relative pose estimation. Furthermore, by formulating with planar 3D representation, our method emerges with the ability for accurate plane segmentation. The project page is available at https://lck666666.github.io/plana3r

Response-G1: Explicit Scene Graph Modeling for Proactive Streaming Video Understanding

原文摘要

Proactive streaming video understanding requires Video-LLMs to decide when to respond as a video unfolds, a task where existing methods often fall short due to their implicit, query-agnostic modeling of visual evidence. We introduce Response-G1, a novel framework that establishes explicit, structured alignment between the accumulated video evidence and the query’s expected response conditions via scene graphs. The framework operates in three fine-tuning-free stages: (1) online query-guided scene graph generation from streaming clips; (2) memory-based retrieval of the most semantically relevant historical scene graphs; and (3) retrieval-augmented trigger prompting for per-frame “silence/response” decisions. By grounding both evidence and conditions in a shared graph representation, Response-G1 achieves more interpretable and accurate response timing decisions. Experimental results on established benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our method in both proactive and reactive tasks, validating the advantage of explicit scene graph modeling and retrieval in streaming video understanding.

原文摘要

While Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR) has proven effective for closed-ended tasks, extending it to open-ended social language games via self-play reveals a critical issue: evolution impasse. Due to the vast strategy space, language agents frequently converge to homogenized behaviors, leading to deterministic match outcomes that eliminate the gradient signals necessary for policy evolution. To tackle this issue, we propose Dual-scale Evolutionary Policy Training (DEPT) for social language games. DEPT introduces a time-scaled evolutionary perception mechanism that detects impasse by quantifying dual-scale value baseline divergence alongside match entropy. Upon perceiving the collapse, it then activates asymmetric advantage reshaping to dynamically modulate the optimization landscape for intervention. Thus, our method effectively restores gradient signals and enforces sustained strategic exploration. Extensive experiments on multiple social language games demonstrate that DEPT outperforms strong baselines, avoiding policy degeneration and driving the continuous evolution of social language agents.

原文摘要

Contrastively pretrained audio–language models (e.g., CLAP) excel at clip-level understanding but struggle with frame-level tasks.Existing extensions fail to exploit the varying granularity of real-world audio–text data, where massive clip-level textual descriptions coexist with limited frame-level annotations. This paper proposes Fine-grained Language-Audio Pretraining (FineLAP), a novel training paradigm that advances both clip- and frame-level alignment in CLAP with heterogeneous data.FineLAP introduces a dual-stream sigmoid loss with a cluster-based sampling strategy to jointly learn from clip- and frame-level supervision. To capture both global semantics and local details, FineLAP uses a decoupled audio projector on top of a self-supervised encoder. To alleviate the scarcity of temporally annotated data, we present FineLAP-100k, a large-scale synthetic SED dataset constructed through a scalable curation pipeline.Extensive experiments demonstrate that FineLAP achieves SOTA performance across multiple audio understanding tasks, including retrieval, classification, sound event detection, and text-to-audio grounding. Ablation studies further show that coarse- and fine-grained alignment are mutually beneficial, providing insights for building better audio-language models (ALMs).

Reinforcement Learning on Pre-Training Data

原文摘要

Recent progress in large language models (LLMs) is largely driven by scaling training compute through either pre-training with next-token prediction (NTP) or post-training with reinforcement learning (RL). The former contributes to learning broad knowledge and skills from general data, while struggling with data inefficiency and catastrophic forgetting in continual learning settings. The latter incentivizes reasoning capabilities with strong generalization, but is constrained by limited data availability due to its reliance on human annotation. To alleviate these issues, we propose Reinforcement Learning on Pre-Training data (RLPT), which combines the advantages of learning from general data and RL. In particular, RLPT derives reward signals directly from general text data through a next-segment reasoning objective, rewarding the policy for correctly predicting next text segments conditioned on the prefix text. Experiments across multiple benchmarks and models demonstrate the effectiveness of . For example, RLPT yields substantial improvements in continual pre-training (+4.6\%) and provides a strong foundation for post-training (+3.4\%) on Qwen3-8B-Base.

Discovery and Reinforcement of Tool-Integrated Reasoning Chains via Rollout Trees

原文摘要

Tool-Integrated Reasoning has emerged as a key paradigm to augment Large Language Models (LLMs) with computational capabilities, yet integrating tool-use into long Chain-of-Thought (long CoT) remains underexplored, largely due to the scarcity of training data and the challenge of integrating tool-use without compromising the model’s intrinsic long-chain reasoning. In this paper, we introduce DART (Discovery And Reinforcement of Tool-Integrated Reasoning Chains via Rollout Trees), a reinforcement learning framework that enables spontaneous tool-use during long CoT reasoning without additional human annotation. DART operates by constructing dynamic rollout trees during training to discover valid tool-use opportunities, branching out at promising positions to explore tool-integrated trajectories. Subsequently, a tree-based process advantage estimation identifies and credits specific sub-trajectories where tool invocation positively contributes to the solution, effectively reinforcing these beneficial behaviors during training. Extensive experiments on challenging benchmarks like AIME and GPQA-Diamond demonstrate that DART significantly outperforms existing methods, successfully harmonizing tool execution with long CoT reasoning.
