Fractional Power-of-Two Quantization for Efficient and Effective Multiplier-Free LLM Inference

Sunghyun Wee, Geunjae Choi, Hyeonjin Kim, Suyoung Kim, Nojun Kwak

原文摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) demand efficient inference, where the multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations in linear projections dominate compute and energy cost. Post-training quantization (PTQ) reduces this cost by mapping weights and activations to low-bit integers. Power-of-Two (PoT) weight quantization promises efficient multiplier-free LLM inference via shift-add logic, but suffers significant accuracy degradation at low bit-widths due to its coarse base-2 quantization grid. We introduce Fractional PoT (FPoT), a base-$\sqrt{2}$ (half-octave) fractional PoT grid that achieves practical 4-bit weight quantization while preserving a fully integer shift-add datapath. The method combines (i) the base-$\sqrt{2}$ weight grid with uniform integer activations, (ii) a calibration-time grid-alignment refinement absorbed into the static per-channel scale, and (iii) a lightweight 1-adder $\sqrt{2}$ approximation whose error is absorbed during weight calibration via approximate-grid quantization, yielding a processing element (PE) with significantly fewer gates than a 4-bit integer multiplier. On Llama-3-8B with 4-bit weight and activation quantization, FPoT improves zero-shot commonsense reasoning performance by 8.72% relative to the PoT baseline, while maintaining performance close to the uniform integer baseline, with only a negligible 0.4%p degradation. These results hold across various configurations spanning seven models and three bit-widths. Furthermore, FPoT can be integrated with state-of-the-art LLM PTQ methods, demonstrating framework-agnostic applicability.

ManiFusion: Unlocking the High-Throughput Generation via Superposition in Manifold Space

Minkyu Kim, Baekseung Kim, Junhoo Lee, Jangho Kim, Nojun Kwak

原文摘要

Diffusion models achieve high-quality image generation but remain computationally expensive due to iterative denoising across many timesteps. Existing acceleration methods mainly reduce per-sample latency, but gains along this axis are becoming saturated. We instead explore an orthogonal throughput-oriented direction by processing multiple samples within a single denoising evaluation. To this end, we propose ManiFusion, a backbone-agnostic framework for multi-sample generation through fused-space computation. ManiFusion jointly processes multiple samples by fusing them before the denoising backbone and separating them afterward through unfusion. We provide a geometric perspective on how multiple samples can share a fused representation while retaining the information needed to guide their individual generation trajectories. To better align fusion allocation with denoising stages, ManiFusion uses Trajectory-Fusion Scheduling (TFS), which dynamically adjusts fusion factors throughout sampling. ManiFusion generalizes across diffusion families, including both U-Net and transformer backbones in pixel and latent spaces. We further show that ManiFusion composes with existing acceleration methods and reaches throughput regimes unattainable by prior approaches with minimal quality degradation.

Knowledge Beyond Language: Bridging the Gap in Multilingual Machine Unlearning Evaluation

Kyomin Hwang Seoul National University, Hyeonjin Kim Seoul National University, Sangyeon Cho, Nojun Kwak Seoul National University

原文摘要

While LLMs are increasingly used in commercial services, they pose privacy risks such as leakage of sensitive personally identifiable information (PII). For LLMs trained on multilingual corpora, Multilingual Machine Unlearning (MMU) aims to remove information across multiple languages. However, prior MMU evaluations fail to capture such cross-linguistic distribution of information, being largely limited to direct extensions of per-language evaluation protocols. To this end, we propose two metrics to evaluate the information spread across languages: the Knowledge Separability Score (KSS) and the Knowledge Persistence Score (KPS). KSS measures the overall unlearning quality across multiple languages, while KPS more specifically aims to assess consistent removal of information among different language pairs. We evaluated various unlearning methods in the multilingual setting with these metrics and conducted comprehensive analyses. Through our investigation, we provide insights into unique phenomena exclusive to MMU and offer a new perspective on MMU evaluation.

Unlocking the Potential of Diffusion Language Models through Template Infilling

Junhoo Lee, Seungyeon Kim Seoul National University, Nojun Kwak Seoul National University

原文摘要

Diffusion Language Models (DLMs) have emerged as a promising alternative to Autoregressive Language Models, yet their inference strategies largely rely on prefix-based prompting inherited from the autoregressive paradigm. In this paper, we propose Template Infilling (TI), a conditioning methodology tailored for DLMs. Unlike conventional prefix prompting, TI distributes structural anchors across the target response, establishing a global template before infilling masked segments. This enables structured conditioning that leverages the bidirectional generation process of DLMs. We evaluate TI on diverse benchmarks, including mathematical reasoning, code generation, and trip planning, achieving consistent improvements of 9.40%p over baseline prompting strategies. Furthermore, TI naturally supports multi-token generation settings, providing practical speed advantages while maintaining generation quality and robustness. Overall, our results highlight a DLM-specific conditioning paradigm for structured generation, suggesting a promising direction for inference methods tailored to diffusion-based language models.
