ParetoSaddler: Pareto-Guided Optimization of Agent Harnesses for Quality and Cost

Harness optimization can substantially improve LLM agents without modifying model weights, but existing methods primarily optimize response quality. Extending them to joint quality--cost optimization introduces a challenge: applying the deployment preference during intermediate updates can prematurely reject candidates that are valuable for later improvements. We introduce ParetoSaddler, which addresses this mismatch by separating intermediate candidate promotion from final deployment selection. At each iteration, an optimizer updates a parent harness to produce a candidate, and then compares the two over repeated executions and uses Bayesian bootstrap Pareto support to promote candidates showing credible progress in either quality or cost. Promoted candidates receive broader development evaluation and remain available as parents for later optimization steps. We evaluate ParetoSaddler on ClawMark and GAIA2 using domain-disjoint splits. On ClawMark, ParetoSaddler improves quality from 70.86\% to 81.35\% while reducing cost from \$1.17 to \$1.01 per task; on GAIA2, it improves quality from 56.22\% to 62.89\% while reducing cost from \$0.78 to \$0.45 per task. The Pareto-selected harnesses also achieve higher quality at lower cost than quality-only harness optimization. Analysis shows that Pareto-aware optimization retains intermediate candidates that would be discarded by deployment preference but can support later improvements, while Bayesian bootstrap screening filters out candidates whose gains are weakly supported across runs.

Learning a Prior-Data Fitted Network for Graph Foundation Models via Structural Causal Model Priors

Graph Foundation Models (GFMs) have recently emerged as a promising paradigm for learning transferable representations across different graphs and domains. However, existing GFMs face notable limitations, including limited pre-training scale or reliance on aligning with textual information in Large Language Models (LLMs). To overcome these limitations, recent studies have drawn inspiration from prior-data fitted networks (PFNs), which learn from large synthetic datasets and support multi-domain prediction backed by causal learning. However, existing graph PFNs encounter severe difficulties in modeling causal relationships within and across node and edge sets, generating diverse graph structures, and designing suitable architectures that can learn from complex synthetic datasets. To address these challenges, we propose **GSCM-PFN** (Graph SCM-based Prior-Data Fitted Network), a graph PFN pre-trained on synthetic data generated from an SCM-based prior that jointly models nodes and graph topology. Specifically, we (1) design a joint feature-edge-label structural causal model (SCM) to guide synthetic graph generation and capture causal relationships within and across node and edge sets; (2) introduce prior-guided node-edge dependency modeling to instantiate diverse graph generation strategies, and prove that our SCM-based generation prior is more expressive than existing priors; and (3) propose a feature-permutation-invariant dual-path graph network with theoretical guarantees for learning from diverse synthetic graphs. Experiments on 23 real-world benchmarks show that GSCM-PFN outperforms both conventional GFMs and PFN-based GFMs, without utilizing real-world graph data for pre-training. Beyond Code Pairs: Dialogue-Based Data Generation for LLM Code Translation

Large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable capabilities in code translation, yet their performance deteriorates in low-resource programming domains such as Fortran and emerging frameworks like CUDA, where high-quality parallel data are scarce. We present an automated dataset generation pipeline featuring a dual-LLM Questioner–Solver design that incorporates external knowledge from compilers and runtime feedback. Beyond traditional source–target code pair datasets, our approach additionally generates (1) verified translations with unit tests for assessing functional consistency, and (2) multi-turn dialogues that capture the reasoning process behind translation refinement. Applied to Fortran→C++ and C++→CUDA, the pipeline yields 3.64k and 3.93k dialogues, respectively. Fine-tuning on this data yields dramatic improvements in functional correctness, boosting unit test success rates by over 56% on the challenging C++-to-CUDA task. We show that the generated data enables a 7B open-weight model to significantly outperform larger proprietary systems on key metrics like compilation success.

Modeling Annotator Disagreement with Demographic-Aware Experts and Synthetic Perspectives

Yinuo Xu, Veronica Derricks, Allison Earl University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, David Jurgens University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

We present an approach to modeling annotator disagreement in subjective NLP tasks through both architectural and data-centric innovations. Our model, DEM-MoE (Demographic-Aware Mixture of Experts), routes inputs to expert subnetworks based on annotator demographics, enabling it to better represent structured, group-level variation compared to prior models. DEM-MoE consistently performs competitively across demographic groups, and shows especially strong results on datasets with high annotator disagreement. To address sparse demographic coverage, we test whether LLM-generated synthetic annotations via zero-shot persona prompting can be used for data imputation. We show these synthetic judgments align moderately well with human annotations on our data and offer a scalable way to potentially enrich training data. We then propose and evaluate approaches for blending real and synthetic data using strategies tailored to dataset structure. We find that the optimal strategies depend on dataset structure. Together, these contributions improve the representation of diverse perspectives.
