Align Before Aggregation: Basis-Consistent Federated LoRA under Heterogeneous Ranks

Pengpeng Qiao, Yang Cao, Lingling Zhang, Guo Cheng, Junwei Chen, Manjiang Yu, Wei Yang Bryan Lim, Masatoshi Yoshikawa

原文摘要

Federated fine-tuning of large language models (LLMs) under heterogeneous client capacities is increasingly important, and low-rank adaptation (LoRA) with heterogeneous ranks makes it practical. Existing server-side aggregators compose local matrix updates $ΔW_i$ from client-specific LoRA factors $(A_i,B_i)$ before aggregating them. Although these matrix updates lie in the same weight space $\mathbb{R}^{m\times n}$ and can be averaged directly, the LoRA factors that generate them may expressed client-specific local basis. In the typical compose--aggregate--factorize--dispatch loop, this basis inconsistency can make the rank-$r_i$ reference prefix dispatched to lower-rank clients unstable after server-side refactorization. In this work, we propose \textbf{FedAbA}, a basis-consistent federated LoRA aggregation framework for heterogeneous ranks. FedAbA first extracts each client's local basis, aligns it to the corresponding prefix of the global reference basis, and constructs a basis-consistent reconstruction of each local matrix update before aggregation. It then aggregates these reconstructions with weights that combine client data size and consistency score, followed by exact coefficient-space SVD refactorization and gauge fixing before rank-prefix dispatch. Our theoretical analysis clarifies the role of basis consistency and supports the proposed consistency-aware aggregation mechanism. Extensive experiments show that FedAbA outperforms representative federated LoRA baselines, with the largest gains under the strongest rank heterogeneity.

Online Draft Co-Training for Speculative Decoding in Large-Scale, Long-Context RL Post-Training

原文摘要

Speculative decoding accelerates rollout generation, which dominates the cost of reinforcement learning (RL) post-training. Online co-training keeps the draft aligned with the evolving policy, further increasing acceptance length and speedup. However, training large models on long contexts requires context parallelism (CP) and pipeline parallelism (PP), and co-training drafts under this layout poses two obstacles: (1) the draft's branch attention is unsupported by causal CP, and (2) the target features that the draft consumes are spread across PP stages. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of online draft co-training in NeMo-RL. For CP, we extend packed, load-balanced zigzag ring attention by merging rank-local branch attention with causal main-sequence attention. For PP, TapChannel transports intermediate target features across stages via a separate path, leaving the pipeline schedule unaffected. Experiments show that co-training keeps the policy's reward and accuracy close to the no-draft baseline while delivering $1.48$--$2.25\times$ rollout speedups and $1.19$--$1.88\times$ end-to-end training speedups across model scales up to 122B. Our CP design achieves strong scaling at 256K sequence length with significant memory savings over prior work, and our PP transport incurs modest overhead. 原文摘要

Dialectal Arabic speech recognition remains constrained by the scarcity of dialect-resolved transcribed speech despite the abundance of web audio. We introduce GigaSpeech 3, a corpus of 39,000 hours and 10 million weakly transcribed speech segments covering Algerian, Egyptian, Iraqi, Saudi, and Syrian Arabic. Starting from 60 hours of manual transcription per dialect, we train labeling models using speech-recognition-biased self-supervised learning and apply them to dialect-matched web audio. Data selection and four rounds of noisy-student refinement for Saudi and Syrian Arabic yield the final corpus. We validate its utility through dialect-specific and multi-dialect speech recognition training and cross-domain evaluation. On GigaSpeechBench, the final dialect-specific models outperform their labeling models across all five dialects and achieve a macro-average word error rate of 23.86%, a 16.6% relative reduction from the strongest third-party system covering all five dialects, while outperforming the best third-party result on three dialects. A multi-dialect model using self-predicted dialect identities achieves a macro-average word error rate of 25.51% while also supporting Modern Standard Arabic. Across eight conditions from three external corpora, a GigaSpeech 3-trained Zipformer achieves the lowest word error rate among six evaluated models in every condition, while adapting the Qwen3 speech recognizer on GigaSpeech 3 improves performance across all eight conditions. We release the corpus and recipes as a foundation for dialect-aware Arabic speech processing.

Towards Trustworthy Physical Intelligence: From Theory to Practice Across Life Cycle

Yang Wang, Hongxuan Liu, Xinghui Xu, Arjun Menon, Xiaoran Cai, Yunyu He, Alex Tarvo, Jingzong Zhou 等 43 位作者

原文摘要

Physical intelligence refers to intelligence systems that understand, reason about and act in accordance with the physical world and its underlying laws, dynamics, and constraints. Unlike conventional AI systems, physical intelligence interacts continuously with uncertain physical environments, and its actions produce consequences that are physically irreversible. As existing trustworthy AI frameworks have been developed primarily for digital AI systems, they do not fully capture the distinctive challenges of Physical Intelligence, such as physical safety, cyber-physical security, and physical manufacturing process. To address this gap, our paper develop a foundation for understanding, operationalizing, and governing trustworthy physical intelligence. First, we characterize the fundamental capabilities of physical intelligence. Second, we investigate the role of physical laws and principles in AI and analyze the associated challenges of physical intelligence. Third, we provide a unified structure of the end-to-end physical intelligence life cycle across five core stages and introduce the Trustworthy Physical Intelligence Operationalization (T-PAIO) framework. Fourth, we formulate the Trustworthy Physical Intelligence (T-PAI) Principles as a theoretical framework that synthesizes key trustworthiness dimensions and establishes a conceptual foundation for the governance of physical intelligence systems.

Rank-Aware Differentially Private Release of Listwise Preferences for LLM Alignment

Junwei Chen, Manjiang Yu, Pengpeng Qiao, Yang Cao

原文摘要

Listwise preference feedback offers richer supervision for large language model (LLMs) alignment than pairwise comparisons, but a full ranking also reveals more sensitive user preferences. Existing privacy-preserving alignment methods focus mainly on pairwise feedback, while listwise alignment under local differential privacy (LDP) remains unexplored. Extending LDP to this listwise domain raises a critical challenge: the high sensitivity of the full ranking space demands excessive noise, neutralizing the benefits of listwise supervision. To address this challenge, we analyze the interaction between supervision granularity and privacy noise in downstream training, and introduce a rank-aware exponential mechanism that privatizes listwise preference data into a low-sensitivity granularity suitable for downstream alignment. The mechanism leverages ranking information to sample a fixed-size binary partition, concentrating the noise near borderline items instead of perturbing all items uniformly as randomized response (RR) does. Empirical evaluations on downstream LLM alignment tasks show that our mechanism consistently outperforms existing LDP baselines at matched privacy budgets. The code is available at https://github.com/tdsai-lab/RAEM.

VRPO: Rethinking Value Modeling for Robust RL under Noisy Supervision in LLM Post-Training

Dingwei Zhu, Shihan Dou, Zhiheng Xi, Senjie Jin, Guoqiang Zhang, Jiazheng Zhang, Junjie Ye, Mingxu Chai 等 19 位作者

原文摘要

Reinforcement Learning (RL) in real-world environments often suffers from ambiguous or incomplete reward supervision, which undermines policy stability and generalization. Such noise may cause models to ignore key information or even collapse in advantage estimation. We find that a strong value model is essential for absorbing unstable signals and producing reliable advantages, offering denser and more robust supervision than the reward model. To better optimize noisy supervision, we propose VRPO, a framework that enhances value modeling for robust RL in LLM post-training. VRPO integrates (1) auxiliary losses guided by entropy and perplexity from a frozen language model, and (2) a variational information bottleneck, enabling the value model to filter noise and capture key words. This design allows the value model to correct noise rewards and generate more reliable advantage estimates, transforming it from a passive predictor into an active noise regulator. Experiments on multi-turn dialogue, math reasoning, and science QA with both rule-based and model-based rewards show that VRPO consistently outperforms baselines such as PPO and GRPO. Our work highlight the central role of the value model in Robust RL and provide a principled and practical approach to policy optimization under noisy supervision.

Please refuse to answer me! Mitigating Over-Refusal in Large Language Models via Adaptive Contrastive Decoding

Yupeng Qi, Ziyu Lyu Sun Yat-Sen University, Lixin Cui, Lu Bai, Feng Xia Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

原文摘要

Safety-aligned large language models (LLMs) often generate refusal responses to harmless queries due to the over-refusal problem. However, existing methods for mitigating over-refusal cannot maintain a low refusal ratio for harmless queries while keeping a high refusal ratio for malicious ones. In this paper, we analyze how system prompts with varying safety levels affect LLM refusal behaviors when facing over-refusal queries. A key observation is that, when LLMs suffer from the over-refusal issue, non-refusal tokens remain present in the next-token candidate list, but the model systematically fails to select them, despite the generation of refusal tokens. Based on this observation, we propose a training-free and model-agnostic approach, Adaptive Contrastive Decoding (AdaCD), to mitigate over-refusal while maintaining LLM safety. First, AdaCD compares the output distributions of the LLM with or without an extreme safety system prompt to refine the refusal token distribution. Second, we introduce an adaptive contrastive decoding strategy that dynamically incorporates or removes the refusal token distribution, adaptively boosting the probability of selecting refusal or non-refusal tokens. Experimental results on five benchmark datasets show that, on average, AdaCD reduces the refusal ratio for over-refusal queries by 10.35%, yet still increases the refusal ratio for malicious queries by 0.13%. Code is available at https://shorturl.at/Z31Oe.

原文摘要

The advent of multi-modal large language models (MLLMs) has greatly advanced research on video fake news detection (VFND) tasks. Existing benchmarks typically focus on the detection accuracy, while failing to provide fine-grained assessments for the entire detection process. To address these limitations, we introduce POVFNDB (Process-oriented Video Fake News Detection Benchmark), a process-oriented benchmark comprising 10 tasks designed to systematically evaluate MLLMs’ perception, understanding, and reasoning capabilities in VFND. This benchmark contains 36,240 human-annotated question-answer (QA) in structured or open-ended formats, spanning 15 distinct evaluation dimensions that characterize different aspects of the video fake news detection process.Using POVFNDB, we conduct comprehensive evaluations on both proprietary and open-source MLLMs. Moreover, We fine-tune Qwen2.5VL-7B-Instruct on a reasoning dataset generated by our proposed POVFND-CoT, a chain-of-thought method that utilizes rationales from evaluation results and rationale validation. The resulting model achieves sota performance on VFND.

HERMES: KV Cache as Hierarchical Memory for Efficient Streaming Video Understanding

Haowei Zhang Fudan University, Shudong Yang, Jinlan Fu Fudan University, See-Kiong Ng National University of Singapore, Xipeng Qiu Shanghai Innovation Institution and Fudan University

原文摘要

Recent advancements in Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have demonstrated significant improvement in offline video understanding. However, extending these capabilities to streaming video inputs, remains challenging, as existing models struggle to simultaneously maintain stable understanding performance, real-time responses, and low GPU memory overhead. To address this challenge, we propose HERMES, a novel training-free architecture for real-time and accurate understanding of video streams. Based on a mechanistic attention investigation, we conceptualize KV cache as a hierarchical memory framework that encapsulates video information across multiple granularities. During inference, HERMES reuses a compact KV cache, enabling efficient streaming understanding under resource constraints. Notably, HERMES requires no auxiliary computations upon the arrival of user queries, thereby guaranteeing real-time responses for continuous video stream interactions. HERMES achieves 10\times faster TTFT compared to prior SOTA. Even when reducing video tokens by up to 68% compared with uniform sampling, HERMES achieves superior or comparable accuracy across all benchmarks, with up to 11.4% gains on streaming datasets.

Efficient KL Divergence Estimation via Truncated Top-K Integration for Large Language Models

Xinyuan Wang, Luozhijie Jin, Bo Wang Fudan University, Yuan Li, Zhangyue Yin, Xipeng Qiu Shanghai Innovation Institution and Fudan University

原文摘要

Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence regularization is essential for stabilizing reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) in large language models (LLMs), yet its exact computation requires summing over vocabularies of all tokens, incurring prohibitive memory costs during training. Existing stochastic estimators circumvent this bottleneck by estimating KL divergence using only the sampled token from the trajectory, but suffer from high variance (k_1) or systematic bias (k_2). We propose TIKE (Top-k Importance-weighted KL Estimator), which exploits the Zipfian structure of language model distributions: by deterministically integrating over only the top-k tokens, TIKE captures most of the probability mass while effectively reducing memory cost. To ensure correctness in off-policy settings characteristic of Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO), we incorporate importance sampling weights that correct for distribution shift between rollout and optimization policies. Experiments on models across diverse benchmarks demonstrate that TIKE consistently outperforms stochastic baselines, while exhibiting substantially lower gradient variance. Our analysis reveals that TIKE closely tracks the exact Rao-Blackwellized estimator with near-zero variance, offering a practical path toward stable, memory-efficient KL regularization for reasoning-intensive LLMs training.

XY-Tokenizer: Mitigating the Semantic-Acoustic Conflict in Low-Bitrate Speech Codecs

Yitian Gong, Luozhijie Jin, Kuangwei Chen, Dong Zhang, Ruifan Deng Fudan University, Xiaogui Yang, Xin Zhang, Zhaoye Fei 等 11 位作者

原文摘要

Speech codecs provide an important interface between continuous speech signals and large language models. An ideal codec for speech language models should not only preserve acoustic information but also capture rich semantic information. However, existing codecs struggle to balance these objectives at low bitrates. We propose \textbf{XY-Tokenizer}, a low-bitrate speech codec (around 1 kbps) trained with a structured multi-stage, multi-task strategy that aligns discrete speech representations with text while preserving fine-grained acoustic details for reconstruction. This design explicitly mitigates the semantic–acoustic conflict observed in prior low-bitrate codecs. Experiments show that XY-Tokenizer achieves stronger semantic alignment than representative semantic-distillation codecs such as SpeechTokenizer and Mimi, while maintaining high-quality speech reconstruction across both clean and out-of-distribution conditions. Furthermore, XY-Tokenizer consistently outperforms existing low-bitrate codecs in LLM-based speech understanding and generation tasks, demonstrating its effectiveness as a general-purpose speech representation for speech–language modeling.

Sparrow: Text-Anchored Window Attention with Visual-Semantic Glimpsing for Speculative Decoding in Video LLMs

Libo Zhang, Zhaoning Zhang National University of Defense Technology, Hongwanyang, Peng Qiao, Dongsheng Li National University of Defense Technology

原文摘要

Although speculative decoding is widely used to accelerate Vision-Language Models (VLMs) inference, it faces severe performance collapse when applied to Video Large Language Models (Vid-LLMs). The draft model typically falls into the trap of attention dilution and negative visual gain due to key-value cache explosion and context window mismatches. We observe a visual semantic internalization phenomenon in Vid-LLMs, indicating that critical visual semantics are implicitly encoded into text hidden states during deep-layer interactions, which renders raw visual inputs structurally redundant during deep inference. To address this, we propose the Sparrow framework, which first utilizes visually-aware text-anchored window attention via hidden state reuse to fully offload visual computation to the target model, and leverages intermediate-layer visual state bridging to train the draft model with semantic-rich intermediate states, thereby filtering out low-level visual noise. Additionally, a multi-token prediction strategy is introduced to bridge the training-inference distribution shift. Experiments show that Sparrow achieves an average speedup of 2.82x even with 25k visual tokens, effectively resolving the performance degradation in long sequences and offering a practical solution for real-time long video tasks.
