Improving Long-Tail Detection via Layout-Instruction Conditioned Diffusion Synthesis

Xinyu Zhang, Xiaodi Wang, Yanpeng Sun, Lingfeng Yang, Jingdong Wang, Lingqiao Liu

原文摘要

Synthetic data from diffusion models can improve object detection, but long-tail performance is still limited by scarce rare classes and inflexible conditioning (e.g., text-only or layout-only inputs). In this paper, we propose Tail-SD, a layout-instruction conditioned stable diffusion framework that supports text, layouts, or their hybrid, enabling controllable synthesis from boxes, masks, and/or prompts to better cover the long-tail objects. To train a single model across heterogeneous conditions, we introduce a multi-task cross-attention module and multi-task embedding tokens, improving generation quality and diversity. Extensive experiments on COCO and LVIS demonstrate that diffusion synthesis with hybrid conditioning consistently benefits detection, e.g., on LVIS val, it achieves +4.89% / +5.68% rare Box/Mask AP, highlighting strong potential for addressing long-tail challenges.

FaCoDiff: Factor-Correlated Diffusion for Multivariate Probabilistic Forecasting

Jiaxuan Li, Yao Liu, Yuewei Xue, Shijie Dong, Zixiang Jin, Xiaoyu Guo, Qiao Liu

原文摘要

Multivariate probabilistic forecasting requires modeling cross-variable dependence alongside marginal uncertainty. The challenge is to learn this dependence while controlling marginal noise scales and avoiding dense covariance costs. We propose Factor-Correlated Diffusion (FaCoDiff), which couples a compact conditional statistical estimator with structured denoising. History-conditioned factor loadings use distinct coefficients for forecast-center correction, scale adjustment and noise dependence. Diagonal compensation preserves the estimated marginal noise variances, while low-rank operators enable residual Gaussian likelihood evaluation and noise transport without dense covariance storage or factorization. Factor-derived feature modulation explicitly conditions the denoiser, and a geometry-aware objective accounts for errors after noise transport. The same conditional geometry governs forward perturbations and reverse sampling. Across nine datasets, FaCoDiff achieves the lowest mean variogram score on eight datasets and ranks among the top two on 43 of 54 dataset-metric combinations in the reported comparisons. Matched ablations on Solar and Weather show that factor covariance improves mean Energy and Variogram scores under all four combinations of center and scale correction. Disrupting cross-variable sample pairings while preserving marginal trajectories worsens joint and aggregate scores on both datasets, demonstrating the predictive value of generated cross-variable dependence.

ProAlign: Progressive Positional and Prototype-Guided Alignment for Aerial-Ground Person Re-Identification

Qiao Li, Jing Chen, Cong Wu, Kun He, Ruiying Du, Lei Tan

原文摘要

Aerial-Ground Person Re-Identification (AG-ReID) aims to match pedestrian images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ground-based surveillance cameras. The task remains highly challenging due to severe viewpoint discrepancies, frequent occlusions, and substantial domain gaps between aerial and ground imagery. Beyond these observable factors, existing methods often overlook two fundamental structural issues: cumulative positional drift during hierarchical feature extraction and semantic inconsistency across cross-view feature distributions. To address these challenges, we propose ProAlign, a Progressive Positional and Prototype-Guided Alignment Network for AG-ReID. ProAlign comprises two key components: a Layer-wise Progressive Positional Embedding (LPPE) module and a View-Aware Prototype Contrastive Learning (PCL) module. LPPE performs adaptive positional calibration throughout transformer layers by employing conditional positional encoding in shallow layers to mitigate local spatial distortions, while introducing learnable static positional embeddings in deeper layers to reinforce global semantic priors. Meanwhile, PCL maintains view-specific aerial and ground prototypes for each identity and enforces cross-view semantic consistency via a dual-prototype contrastive objective. Extensive experiments on CARGO and two real-world AG-ReID benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of ProAlign, achieving state-of-the-art overall retrieval performance on CARGO with improvements of 1.60% in Rank-1 accuracy and 5.01% in mAP over the strongest competing methods.

TapeSAC: Automated, Pareto-Optimal Fine-Grained Memory Management for Large Model Training

原文摘要

Selective activation checkpointing (SAC) decides which activations to save for the backward pass and which to recompute: each choice is a point in the plane of peak memory and recomputation time, and the goal is that plane's Pareto frontier. Current practice falls short of this goal. Hand-tuned policies fix a single point that does not adapt when the model, batch or kernels change; PyTorch's SAC reruns each block's forward pass in program order, recomputing values the backward pass never reads; and the memory budget of torch.compile treats recomputation as free or forbidden and selects saved tensors by bytes alone, an assumption that fails for the custom kernels that produce many of a large model's activations. We present TapeSAC, which automates SAC in eager PyTorch without editing the model's forward code. TapeSAC records each block's forward pass at the dispatcher and, during backward, replays only the producers of the values autograd consumes, so saving a tensor eliminates every producer needed only for it. A planner selects the saved tensors from measured recomputation costs under a single limit on step-peak memory. On Qwen3.8-27B and Qwen3.6-35B-A3B, replay alone reduces step time by 3.0% and 1.7% versus full checkpointing at no greater memory cost; memory-aware planning raises these gains to 6.3% and 13.9% under a 90%-of-device-memory limit. The evaluated hand-tuned policies fall short of this memory-recomputation frontier and, on Qwen3.6-35B-A3B, run out of memory at larger batches. Over 500 steps on real data, TapeSAC reduces training time by 8-11%; on Qwen3.5-397B, it is 2.7% faster than a model-specific hand-tuned policy while using 14% less memory.

原文摘要

Surgical scene understanding is pivotal for computer-assisted intervention, yet demands compositional reasoning across instruments, anatomy, and workflow. Existing surgical vision-language models rely on instruction tuning with large-scale question-answer pairs, entailing laborious data curation and costly retraining. To bridge this gap, we propose SurgEye, a perception-reasoning framework that grounds reasoning in a vision foundation model without instruction tuning. Specifically, we devise Routed Multi-Task Perception (RMP) that routes the vision foundation model through task-specific pathways learned from public perception labels, producing spatial and temporal evidence. We further introduce Agentic Compositional Reasoning (ACR) that employs a frozen large language model to coordinate RMP specialists and temporal memory as callable tools, composing evidence across tasks and time into grounded answers. Moreover, we construct SurgEye-Bench spanning eight surgical procedures, pairing each question with perception labels for verifiable evaluation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that SurgEye outperforms state-of-the-arts in surgical reasoning. The source code will be available.

原文摘要

As AI assistants serve millions of users daily, evaluating user experience (UX) beyond general model capability has become increasingly important. We present \textbf{UXBench}, the first user-centric benchmark grounded in real user feedback signals for evaluating preference alignment and dialogue generation. The benchmark consists of three interconnected tasks, UX Judge, UX Eval, and UX Recovery, with 7,400 test instances extracted from over 70K interaction logs of a mainstream Chinese AI assistant. The dataset closely reflects real user distributions, covering 8 scenarios, 83 domains, and diverse failure patterns that pose severe challenges. Extensive experiments on 26 frontier language models provide novel insights into how well models perceive user experience and how improvements in model capability contribute to better dialogue engagement. Through analyses of model behavior and performance gaps, we document six important findings, demonstrating that user feedback prediction is a learnable capability and revealing different aspects that influence user experience. UXBench establishes a new evaluation landscape and calls for greater attention to tailored UX optimization, contributing toward a user-centric scaling law for the development of successful AI assistants. MedHEB: Benchmarking Medical Embeddings Across Heterogeneous Clinical Evidence

Yingshu Li, Shaoyang Zhou, Zhanyu Wang, Yunyi Liu, Xinyu Liang, Xi Zhang, Lingqiao Liu, Lei Wang 等 9 位作者

原文摘要

Clinical evidence is inherently relational: medical images are interpreted with prior studies, cross-modal examinations, reports, and localized findings, and retrieving relevant evidence is therefore central to clinical interpretation. Recent foundation models increasingly encode these heterogeneous sources into shared embedding spaces, yet existing embedding evaluation often focuses on isolated matches, leaving unclear whether current models retrieve relevant evidence across changes in modality, appearance, and granularity. We introduce MedHEB, a unified benchmark with 107 retrieval tasks from 54 datasets, including both in-distribution and held-out-source evaluation, across three axes: evidence form (2D images, 3D volumes, text), pairing type (image--image, image--text, text--text, and modality-bridging visual matching), and relevance granularity (global, question-conditioned, region-level). Under a single ranking protocol, MedHEB varies clinically relevant evidence definitions to test whether embedding proximity remains meaningful across heterogeneous evidence, including modality-bridging visual retrieval and region-level text-to-region retrieval. Across representative models, performance is uneven across retrieval families: models strong on conventional image--text or text--text retrieval are less reliable on modality-bridging and region-level tasks. Current embedding spaces capture some clinical relationships well but do not yet provide balanced retrieval across heterogeneous evidence. We further provide MedEmb, an MLLM-based reference embedding model trained on the MedHEB ID split, as a reproducible baseline for unified 2D--3D--text medical retrieval. We release MedHEB with preprocessing scripts, evaluation code, access manifests, and MedEmb to support research on clinically meaningful medical embeddings.

EvoMemState: Evolving Memory State for Personal Agents

原文摘要

Long-term memory enables large language model (LLM) agents to provide continuous personalized assistance by retaining user information across interactions. Existing systems support this process through fact extraction, organization, updating, and retrieval, but largely maintain memories as independent facts. This fact-centric paradigm may overlook how new facts update, constrain, or conflict with earlier ones, while leaving their applicability, role, and priority for the current request implicit. In this paper, we introduce EvoMemState, a state-centric framework that augments persistent facts with two complementary states: Relational States that capture how facts remain valid and relate to one another as memory evolves, and a Reasoning State that determines how these facts should be applied to the current request. Specifically, EvoMemState consists of three key components: (i) Ontology-Guided Memory State Induction extracts Persistent Facts and constructs Relational States that maintain their validity, scope, and evolving relations. (ii) RL-Based State Evolution internalizes memory-use experience into a policy through reinforcement learning to generate a request-specific Reasoning State. (iii) State-Aware Reasoning then combines the relevant facts with their Relational States and the generated Reasoning State to guide the personal agent. Extensive experiments on long-term dialogue and memory-use benchmarks demonstrate consistent improvements over existing memory systems in retrieval completeness and memory-grounded response accuracy. Our code and implementation details are available at https://github.com/XMUDeepLIT/EvoMemState.git.

Autonomous Quantum Measurement with Agentic AI

原文摘要

Quantum materials exhibit diverse electronic and functional phenomena, but their characterization requires extensive experimental expertise, iterative decision-making and accumulated laboratory knowledge that is difficult to document and transfer. Here we introduce Quantum Agent (QUANTA), an agentic artificial intelligence (AI) framework for autonomous quantum-materials characterization. Using a widely adopted Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) as an experimental platform, QUANTA combines retrieval augmentation using scientific literature, experimental protocols and prior measurements with specialized agents for experimental planning, troubleshooting, and data interpretation. A separate deterministic control layer validates instrument actions. Guided by incoming data, QUANTA evaluates measurement quality, revises experimental plans and selects subsequent measurements. We demonstrate these capabilities through transport measurements of the topological Weyl semimetal TaP, as well as investigations of nonlinear responses in magnetic material Co2MnGa. These results establish QUANTA as a generalizable framework for evidence-driven, safeguarded and closed-loop quantum-materials characterization.

CoWalk: Cooperative Walks for Agentic Batch Queries on Disk-Resident Graphs

Qiao Liang, Zhiguang Chen, Yue Yu, Nong Xiao

原文摘要

Workloads such as query rewriting, deep research and group-relative policy optimization (GRPO) issue batches of semantically related vector queries. Existing disk-resident approximate nearest neighbor (ANN) systems process these queries independently. On three workloads, 31 to 67 percent of the I/Os of a batch fetch a page that another query of the batch has already fetched. A page cache shared by the batch removes these I/Os, yet it makes a single-thread search only $1.1$ to $1.2{\times}$ faster, because the search time goes to distance computation and the cache does not change the walk of any query. We present CoWalk, which runs the queries of a batch as cooperating walks on one thread. Every query keeps its own candidate list, a page is read once per batch, and the full-precision vector on every fetched page is ranked by every query of the batch. A query therefore reaches the target recall with a shorter candidate list, which computes fewer distances and issues fewer I/Os. At recall@10 of 0.95, CoWalk answers a batch on one thread $1.6$ to $1.9{\times}$ faster than the fastest per-query baseline and issues $2.8$ to $6.9{\times}$ fewer I/Os. On a server it serves $3.0$ to $6.9{\times}$ the throughput of that baseline at a similar batch latency.

The Endgame of FSDP Communication: Layout-Aware Collectives on Copy Engines, RDMA, and NVSwitch

Zejian Wang, Yifan Zhao, Kaihui Ren, Xiaoling Zhou, Yubin Wang, Chenhao Guan, Lin Zhang, Yufeng Li 等 14 位作者

原文摘要

Fully Sharded Data Parallelism (FSDP2) maintains parameters and gradients as per-parameter tensors, whereas its collective path operates on flat, rank-major buffers. Converting between these layouts copies all-gather outputs into parameter storage and packs gradients into full-group fp32 buffers. Layout conversion alone accounts for 6.4% of step time in Llama-3.1 70B training at 8K tokens per GPU. Communication kernels impose a second cost: a default NCCL reduce-scatter can slow a concurrent GEMM that would otherwise complete in a single wave by 69%. We present TIDE, a set of zero-copy collectives built on public NCCL 2.31+ APIs. TIDE preserves FSDP2's per-parameter storage and compute kernels while folding layout placement into collective addressing. TIDE-AG delivers shards directly to parameter storage using NVSwitch multicast and paced recursive-doubling RDMA, with no SMs used for transport or placement. TIDE-RS consumes per-parameter bf16 gradients directly and reduces them into fp32 shards (a mixed-precision mode that NCCL does not provide) using copy engines and short-lived thread blocks (CTAs) for node-local accumulation and NVSwitch for cross-node reduction. A two-phase pipeline separates gradient reads from network progress; Slot-Reuse optionally stages gradients in vacated all-gather slots. On 64 GPUs, TIDE reduces step time by up to 27.1% relative to Stock FSDP2 and 6.0% relative to FSDP2+SymmMem across Llama-3.1 70B, Wan2.2, and Qwen3-30B-A3B. It reduces reduce-scatter SM time by factors of 12.5-14.5 and cuts interference with concurrent compute by up to an order of magnitude. Its reduce-scatter buffer remains nearly constant from 16 to 64 GPUs at a fixed per-GPU output size, and its peak memory is up to 4.7 GiB below FSDP2+SymmMem's and, with Slot-Reuse on Wan2.2, below Stock FSDP2's.

Layerwise Repacking: Variable-Length Hybrid-Attention Training without an Extra Redistribution Pass

Jiahao Zhang, Junwei Feng, Dongliang Huang, Xiaoling Zhou, Yiqiao Liao, Chengru Song

原文摘要

Variable-length training creates conflicting parallelism requirements across the layers of a hybrid-attention model. The longest samples require wide sequence-parallel (SP) groups of 16 or 32 ranks for full attention, whose cost grows quadratically with sequence length. Sparse-attention layers, dominated by near-linear MoE work, can instead balance most evaluated workloads within node-local SP8 groups. Reusing the wide groups for these layers pushes their all-to-all communication across nodes, where the observed effective rate is 7.0x lower. Yet switching to smaller groups changes which ranks own each sample; a separate redistribution at every full-sparse boundary would introduce another data transfer. Layerwise Repacking keeps each SP16/32 parent for full attention and repacks its samples into node-local sparse children at SP{1, 2, 4, 8}, where hidden states persist between full layers. The layout change rides on the two existing full-layer Ulysses sites: at each, one variable-size all-to-all performs both the head exchange and the sample repacking, so no redistribution pass is added. Because the balance the children can reach depends on which samples share a parent, an auxiliary parent solver rebalances parent membership before the children are formed. On all 22 steps with SP16/32 parents among the first 200 training steps of a 1F3S hybrid-attention model (one full-attention layer per three sparse-attention layers), repacking alone reduces the mean end-to-end time by 5.95% and raises model FLOPs utilization (MFU) by 3.75 percentage points over the baseline with repacking disabled; with the improved solver, end-to-end time falls by 7.61% and MFU rises by 4.83 percentage points.

Mixture-of-Minds: Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Table Understanding

Yuhang Zhou Meta, Mingrui Zhang, Ke Li, Mingyi Wang Facebook, Qiao Liu City University of New York, Qifei Wang, Jiayi Liu Meta Platforms Inc., Fei Liu Meta 等 15 位作者

原文摘要

Understanding and reasoning over tables is a critical capability for many real-world applications. Large language models (LLMs) have shown promise on this task, but current approaches remain limited. Fine-tuning based methods strengthen language reasoning; yet they are prone to arithmetic errors and hallucination. In contrast, tool-based methods enable precise table manipulation but rely on rigid schemas and lack semantic understanding. These complementary drawbacks highlight the need for approaches that integrate robust reasoning with reliable table processing. In this work, we propose MIXTURE-OF-MINDS, a multi-agent framework that decomposes table reasoning into three specialized roles: planning, coding, and answering. This design enables each agent to focus on a specific aspect of the task while leveraging code execution for precise table manipulation. Building on this workflow, we introduce a self-improvement training framework that employs Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) rollouts to generate pseudo-gold trajectories and optimize agents with reinforcement learning (RL). Extensive experiments show that MIXTURE-OF-MINDS delivers substantial gains, reaching 62.13% on TableBench and surpassing GPT-o3-mini. These results demonstrate the promise of combining structured multi-agent workflows with RL to advance table understanding.

Why Supervised Fine-Tuning Fails to Learn: A Systematic Study of Incomplete Learning in Large Language Models

Chao Xue, Yao Wang, Mengqiao Liu, Di Liang, Xingsheng Han, Peiyang Liu, Xianjie Wu Beijing Information Science & Technology University, Chenyao Lu Tencent AI Lab 等 14 位作者

原文摘要

Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) is the standard approach for adapting large language models (LLMs) to downstream tasks. However, we observe a persistent failure mode: even after convergence, models often fail to correctly reproduce a subset of their own supervised training data. We refer to this behavior as the Incomplete Learning Phenomenon (ILP). This paper presents the first systematic study of ILP in LLM fine-tuning. We formalize ILP as post-training failure to internalize supervised instances and demonstrate its prevalence across multiple model families, domains, and datasets. Through controlled analyses, we identify five recurrent sources of incomplete learning: (1) missing prerequisite knowledge in the pre-trained model, (2) conflicts between SFT supervision and pre-training knowledge, (3) internal inconsistencies within SFT data, (4) left-side forgetting during sequential fine-tuning, and (5) insufficient optimization for rare or complex patterns. We introduce a diagnostic-first framework that maps unlearned samples to these causes using observable training and inference signals, and study several targeted mitigation strategies as causal interventions. Experiments on Qwen, LLaMA, and OLMo2 show that incomplete learning is widespread and heterogeneous, and that improvements in aggregate metrics can mask persistent unlearned subsets. The findings highlight the need for fine-grained diagnosis of what supervised fine-tuning fails to learn, and why.

Learning from the Irrecoverable: Error-Localized Policy Optimization for Tool-Integrated LLM Reasoning

Qiao Liang, Yuke Zhu Alibaba Group, Chao Ge Alibaba Group, Lei Yang Ant Group, Ying Shen Tongji University, Bo Zheng, Sheng Guo

原文摘要

Tool-integrated reasoning (TIR) enables LLM agents to solve tasks through planning, tool use, and iterative revision, but outcome-only reinforcement learning in this setting suffers from sparse, delayed rewards and weak step-level credit assignment. In long-horizon TIR trajectories, an early irrecoverable mistake can determine success or failure, making it crucial to localize the first irrecoverable step and leverage it for fine-grained credit assignment. We propose Error-Localized Policy Optimization (ELPO), which localizes the first irrecoverable step via binary-search rollout trees under a fixed rollout budget, converts the resulting tree into stable learning signals through hierarchical advantage attribution, and applies error-localized adaptive clipping to strengthen corrective updates on the critical step and its suffix. Across TIR benchmarks in math, science QA, and code execution, ELPO consistently outperforms strong Agentic RL baselines under comparable sampling budgets, with additional gains in Pass@K and Major@K scaling, rollout ranking quality, and tool-call efficiency. Our code is publicly released for reproducibility at https://anonymous.4open.science/r/ELPO-7C19.

Why Do Emotions Change? Appraisal-Guided Reasoning for Emotion–Cause Triplet Extraction in Conversations

Qiao Liang, Ying Shen Tongji University, Yao Liu, Tiantian Chen, Lin Zhang IEIT SYSTEMS (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tongji University

原文摘要

Multimodal Emotion–Cause Triplet Extraction in Conversations (MECTEC) is fundamental for fine-grained affect understanding, yet it remains challenging in multi-turn, multi-speaker settings. Existing methods often make locally plausible predictions but struggle to maintain conversation-level consistency under within-speaker emotion shifts and core events. To address this, we propose ECFlow, a unified framework that combines appraisal-guided structured generation with graph-structured reinforcement learning. ECFlow operationalizes cognitive appraisal theory into a controllable intermediate reasoning trace and constructs UMECS, a unified supervision dataset with cognitively grounded traces. It then lifts predicted and gold triplets into an Emotion–Cause Flow Graph and optimizes verifiable, structure-aware rewards for emotion-shift coherence and core-event consistency, together with task-oriented triplet rewards. Experiments on public MECTEC benchmarks show that ECFlow consistently outperforms strong baselines, achieving state-of-the-art triplet extraction and improved structure-aware metrics on emotion shifts and core events. Our code and dataset are available at https://anonymous.4open.science/r/ECFlow-E908.
