Large language models have made rapid progress in agentic reasoning and tool use, raising expectations for agents that can take over realistic productivity work from humans. However, current agents still struggle to finish such tasks, where success requires following long-horizon professional workflows, understanding heterogeneous file contexts, and producing usable deliverables under fine-grained requirements. A key bottleneck is the lack of scalable post-training data that reflects real work intent, authentic file environments, and deliverable-level evaluation. To close this gap, we introduce Agent-R$^2$, a $\textbf{r}$eal-source data synthesis framework that scales training data for $\textbf{r}$ealistic productivity work. Instead of relying on manually specified workflows or LLM-generated files, Agent-R$^2$ grounds synthesis throughout the pipeline in real occupational seeds, corpus-derived workflow evidence, and authentic web-sourced files. From 10k web-corpus candidates, Agent-R$^2$ distills 4k task instances that pair real multi-format attachments with fine-grained, deliverable-level rubrics. On this data, we train Agent-R$^2$-4B via supervised fine-tuning and rubric-based reinforcement learning, improving both end-to-end productivity performance and file-grounded reasoning. Trained on only 4k instances, Agent-R$^2$-4B surpasses Qwen3-235B-A22B-Thinking-2507 on both GDPval (51.0$\%$ vs. 48.0$\%$) and OfficeQA (14.8$\%$ vs. 13.8$\%$). Further analysis shows that Agent-R$^2$ mitigates shortcut behavior, where agents produce superficially plausible deliverables before sufficiently grounding, constructing, or verifying them, while promoting sustained exploration.

Nexus: Same Pretraining Loss, Better Downstream Generalization via Common Minima

Huanran Chen, Huaqing Zhang, Xiao Li, Yinpeng Dong, Ke Shen, Jun Zhu

原文摘要

The foundational capabilities of large language models are acquired during pretraining on internet-scale, highly heterogeneous data mixtures. In this work, we investigate an interesting geometric question regarding the converged state of pretraining: Does the model converge to a common minimizer across all data sources (e.g., Fig. 2b), or merely a minimizer of the summed loss (e.g., Fig. 2a)? We hypothesize that the geometric "closeness" of task-specific minima is intrinsically linked to downstream generalization. We reveal that standard optimizers (e.g., AdamW) often converge to points where task-specific minima are distant from each other. To address this, we propose the Nexus optimizer, which encourages the closeness of these minima by maximizing gradient similarity during optimization. Experiments across models ranging from 130M to 3B parameters, various data mixtures and hyperparameter schedules, show that Nexus significantly boosts downstream performance, despite achieving the same pretraining loss (see Fig. 1). Notably, on the 3B model, Nexus reduces the out-of-distribution loss by 0.012 and yields up to a 15.0% accuracy improvement on complex reasoning tasks (e.g., GSM8k). This finding challenges the reliance on pretraining loss as the sole proxy for model evaluation and demonstrates the importance of implicit biases in unlocking downstream generalization.

CLEAR: Structured Specifications for Controllable Long-Horizon ML Research Engineering

Xin Liu, Hongru Song, Ruqing Zhang, Jiafeng Guo, Xueqi Cheng

原文摘要

Large language model (LLM) agents are increasingly being used to automate machine learning (ML) research workflows, ranging from code development and experiment execution to research reproduction and scientific discovery. Recent systems demonstrate that LLMs can perform substantial portions of ML research engineering with limited human intervention. These advances suggest a shift from automating individual research tasks toward automating long-horizon workflows that transform research artifacts into executable ML systems. However, ML research engineering remains substantially more difficult than isolated code generation. A research artifact typically specifies a system only implicitly through a mixture of natural-language descriptions, equations, pseudo-code, implementation details, datasets, and evaluation protocols. An agent must first infer the intended computational structure, translate it into executable components, coordinate their dependencies, and repeatedly diagnose and repair failures during execution. Consequently, the quality of the final system depends not only on code generation, but also on whether the agent can maintain a consistent representation of what should be implemented throughout this long-horizon process.

Trajectory Evaluation via Rollout-Free World Model for End-to-end Autonomous Driving

Junzhe Wang, Jinqing Zhang, Qingjie Liu

原文摘要

Although existing candidate trajectory evaluators have substantially improved end-to-end planning accuracy, their underlying mechanism remains suboptimal. Model-based evaluators typically make scoring future-aware by explicitly predicting candidate-conditioned future states over the planning horizon, which we term rollout. However, rollout incurs high inference cost and accumulates prediction errors. We argue that planning does not require reconstructing a full future scene for each candidate, but only future-relevant information for reliable comparison. We therefore propose RFWorld, a Rollout-Free World model for end-to-end trajectory evaluation. RFWorld constructs a shared scene memory and shapes it into a future-readable representation via lightweight training-time temporal readout with semantic supervision, keeping training overhead low. At inference time, candidate trajectories directly query the shared memory via sparse spatial readout for scoring, reducing computation by roughly the planning horizon times the number of candidate trajectories, while avoiding recursive rollout errors. Experiments on NAVSIM and Bench2Drive show that RFWorld learns a more planning-aligned world representation and achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Matching in Context: Temporal Fusion and Query Adaptation for Training-Free Video Temporal Grounding

Zhuo Cao, Bingqing Zhang, Sen Wang, Xue Li

原文摘要

Text-guided Video Temporal Grounding (VTG) localizes moments in an untrimmed video that correspond to a text query. Supervised approaches require costly temporal annotations and task-specific training, yet can generalize poorly under distribution shift. To reduce this dependence on task-specific supervision, training-free approaches use pretrained vision-language models to localize moments by measuring the similarity between video and query features. However, independently encoded frames provide limited temporal context, while a fixed query embedding can assign similar scores to different candidate moments within the video. To address these limitations, we propose DSE-VTG, a \underline{D}ual-\underline{S}ide \underline{E}nhancement framework that combines visual evidence across temporal granularities with video-specific query adaptation, without task-specific training. On the visual side, Multi-scale Similarity Fusion (MSF) combines frame- and clip-level similarities into a unified, temporally aware similarity profile. On the query side, Query-level Test-Time Adaptation (Q-TTA) uses pseudo-labels to optimize a lightweight additive offset for more discriminative matching within the video, without fine-tuning the backbone or calling external large language models. Experiments on three standard and two out-of-distribution (OOD) benchmarks show gains over the prior training-free methods. On Charades-STA, DSE-VTG improves mIoU by 5.89 percentage points over the strongest compared baseline under the same backbone. Under distribution shift, DSE-VTG reaches 50.86 mIoU on Charades-CG Novel-Word, surpassing the strongest supervised baseline by 2.76 mIoU. Our code will be released upon acceptance.

CMADiff: Cross-Modal Aligned Diffusion for Controllable Protein Generation

Changjian Zhou, Xinyue Zhang, Yuexi Qiu, Jiaqing Zhang, Heng-Da Cheng, Jia Song, Wensheng Xiang

原文摘要

AI-assisted protein design has emerged as a critical tool for advancing biotechnology, as deep generative models have demonstrated their reliability in this domain. However, most existing models primarily utilize protein sequence or structural data for training, neglecting the physicochemical properties of proteins. Moreover, they are deficient to control the generation of proteins in intuitive conditions. To address these limitations,we propose CMADiff here, a novel framework that enables controllable protein generation by aligning the physicochemical properties of protein sequences with text-based descriptions through a latent diffusion process. Specifically, CMADiff employs a Conditional Variational Autoencoder (CVAE) to integrate physicochemical features as conditional input, forming a robust latent space that captures biological traits. In this latent space, we apply a conditional diffusion process, which is guided by BioAligner, a contrastive learning-based module that aligns text descriptions with protein features, enabling text-driven control over protein sequence generation. Validated by a series of evaluations including AlphaFold3, the experimental results indicate that CMADiff outperforms protein sequence generation benchmarks and holds strong potential for future applications. The implementation and code are available at https://github.com/HPC-NEAU/PhysChemDiff.

TeamGym: A Gym for Team Decision-Making by AI Agents with Distributed Information

Chanwoo Park, Jaywoong Jeong, Zachary Wojtowicz, Yubin Kim, Taekyun Lee, Kaiqing Zhang, Asuman Ozdaglar

原文摘要

Many real-world decisions require teams to integrate information distributed across participants. Yet AI agents are still primarily trained and benchmarked in isolation. We introduce TeamGym, an environment for evaluating and training language model-based agents on team decision-making problems constructed from real-world legal, finance, medical, and software engineering corpora. TeamGym introduces a method to identify a minimal set of facts, each element of which is necessary and all of which are collectively sufficient for a correct final decision, which we call pivotal information. This enables TeamGym to both control the distribution of pivotal information and track how well agents identify and integrate pivotal information when making team decisions. Examining 8 language models on 12 source corpora, we find that current AI agents often fail to effectively share information: Distributing pivotal information across participants lowers success rate by 22.9 percentage points on average relative to giving the same information to a single model (a communication gap). We also document that participants do not effectively retrieve decision-relevant information on their own: A team's success rate is lowered by a further 19.9 points when participants must identify and extract pivotal information from source material rather than receiving it directly (a retrieval gap). To help remedy these deficits, we use TeamGym to train policies through reinforcement learning on team decision loss. Across two policy-training experiments, we find that training improves final-decision quality and induces emergent coordination in participation, speaker selection, and communication, even though the reward evaluates only the final decision.

Efficient Token-Level Policy Optimization for Masked Diffusion Models via Velocity Alignment

Chenxing Wei, Jiazhen Kang, Hong Wang, Jianqing Zhang, Hao Jiang, Xiaolong Xu, Ningyuan Sun, Ying He 等 11 位作者

原文摘要

Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR) successfully aligns autoregressive models in rigorous domains like mathematical reasoning and code generation. However, applying RLVR to Diffusion Large Language Models (dLLMs) is hindered by intractable sequence-level likelihoods, forcing existing methods to rely on unstable, high-variance approximations. We propose Sequence Likelihood-Free Policy Optimization (LFPO), an efficient framework that circumvents this bottleneck by formulating policy alignment as discrete velocity alignment. Inspired by continuous flow matching, LFPO eschews trajectory-level estimation and directly optimizes denoising logits via contrastive token-level updates, providing a stable, low-variance surrogate. Furthermore, predicting terminal solutions from intermediate states implicitly straightens the generation trajectory, enabling high-quality sampling with significantly fewer denoising iterations. Extensive experiments on reasoning and coding benchmarks demonstrate that LFPO matches or exceeds the accuracy of likelihood-based baselines while substantially accelerating inference.

CAMR: Compatibility-Aware Memory Replay for Continual Learning in Large Language Models

Jingpu Yang, Tianhao Li, Fengxian Ji, Yufeng Wang, Shuxin Zheng, Xiaoqing Zhang

原文摘要

Continual learning requires large language models to acquire new knowledge and capabilities while retaining what they have learned. Fine-tuning and replay support acquisition and retention, but deciding whether incoming examples need supervision and which historical examples to revisit remains a challenge. We propose Compatibility-Aware Memory Replay (CAMR), an adaptive framework that jointly controls current-example supervision and historical replay. CAMR combines compatibility checks with a learned memory gate to guide an online policy over three actions: learning incoming examples with general replay, jointly reinforcing compatible related examples, and skipping direct supervision of verified mastered duplicates. The policy learns from acquisition, retention, and training-cost feedback under a bounded per-arrival replay budget. We evaluate CAMR with Qwen3-8B-Base on continual factual updating and cross-task and cross-domain learning. On WikiBigEdit, CAMR consistently leads evaluated methods in Original Match from 3K to 100K facts, reaching 93.66% after just 3K facts and surpassing Full-history Replay (LoRA) after 100K facts. It also achieves the highest final scores on all four selected TRACE tasks and maintains or improves earlier-task performance relative to post-acquisition levels in a sequence spanning financial question answering, mathematical reasoning, code generation, and summarization.

AC-JEPA: Anchored Cross-Modal Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture for Visual-to-Symbolic Translation

Chaofei Hong, Ziyang Chen, Baochen Wang, Christina Yi Jin, Qing Zhang

原文摘要

Cross-modal translation requires models to capture shared semantics across modalities while preserving the fine-grained structure required by the target modality. Yet in real-world scientific domains, paired data are often imperfect, while obtaining clean pairs at scale is costly. Supervised fine-tuning (SFT) directly optimizes cross-modal translation through categorical token-level supervision, but this objective is sensitive to errors in the target sequences. JEPA offers a complementary representation-space objective, but most existing formulations focus on prediction within a modality rather than translation across modalities. We introduce Anchored Cross-Modal JEPA (AC-JEPA), an SFT-compatible plug-in that predicts masked intermediate states in both cross-modal directions using paired data. The joint-embedding objective targets cross-modal structure predictable from context, while the causal SFT path retains direct token-level supervision for the target sequence. During self-training, AC-JEPA learns from continuous latent targets derived from imperfect pseudo-labeled pairs, offering intrinsic tolerance to local data errors without promoting pseudo-tokens to hard categorical supervision. Using optical chemical structure recognition as a testbed, AC-JEPA trained on clean pairs achieves 76.07% accuracy on the Simple set of the WildMol benchmark, compared with 67.40% for SFT alone. Using the same pseudo-labeled data for both approaches, AC-JEPA-based self-training further raises accuracy to 80.23%, whereas accuracy under direct SFT drops from 67.40% to 63.47%. These results support SFT-anchored joint-embedding prediction as an effective strategy for cross-modal translation under both curated and imperfect supervision.

Can JEV Support Clinical Trial Criteria Assessment?

Mengxian He, Ziyue Gao, Chun Li, Shunyi Zhang, Hao Wei, Minqing Zhang, Wu Yuan

原文摘要

Clinical trial prescreening requires distinguishing unmet conditions from insufficient evidence in patient records. Given patient records, criterion questions, and predefined answer options, we retrospectively compared JEV, a non-generative decision model returning native option probabilities, with schema-constrained Qwen Flash across 2,048 test patient-condition pairs from TrialGPT and question-answer datasets derived from MIMIC-III and MIMIC-IV, all evaluated under strict Zero Data Retention (ZDR) policies to ensure clinical data privacy. Both models assessed conditions individually or in batches sharing the same patient context, with performance measured against reference labels. In batch mode, JEV and Qwen achieved similar macro-F1 scores on TrialGPT (0.652 vs. 0.660) and MIMIC-IV (0.807 vs. 0.814), whereas JEV substantially outperformed Qwen on MIMIC-III (0.768 vs. 0.534; $Δ$ = +0.234, 95% CI: 0.187-0.281). This advantage largely reflected higher recall for conditions labeled as having insufficient information (56.3% vs. 9.9%). Across all three datasets, JEV also had lower observed median job latency (1.18-1.40 vs. 2.80-8.90 s) and 53%-74% lower estimated cost per condition. These findings position JEV as an initial assessment component that provides criterion-level judgments and flags potential information gaps for review. JEV's observed errors in interpreting clinical evidence underscore the need to verify its outputs against patient records before they inform eligibility decisions.

Test-Time Confidence Adaptation under RL-Induced Trajectory Shift

Zhenzhen Ren, Xiaoqing Zhang, GuoBiao Li, Bowen Fang, Yanxi Wang, Xinpeng Zhang, Ke Han

原文摘要

Trajectory-based confidence estimation has shown promising performance for large language models (LLMs) by leveraging rich signals from their reasoning processes. However, we find that such confidence estimators can degrade substantially after agentic reinforcement learning (Agentic RL) as it induces substantial shifts in the reasoning trajectories. More importantly, despite these shifts, we uncover a reliability structure that is largely preserved across Base and RL models: $\textbf{more}$ $\textbf{stable}$ $\textbf{trajectories}$ $\textbf{remain}$ $\textbf{more}$ $\textbf{likely}$ $\textbf{to}$ $\textbf{produce}$ $\textbf{correct}$ $\textbf{answers}$. This preserved relationship provides a transferable, label-free reliability signal for post-RL confidence adaptation. Building on this finding, we propose $\textbf{StaR-TTA}$, a stability-guided framework for label-free test-time confidence adaptation. StaR-TTA jointly learns from correctness supervision and stability-derived reliability supervision on labeled Base trajectories, establishing the connection between trajectory stability and answer reliability. At test time, it reuses stability-induced reliability rankings from unlabeled RL trajectories to adapt confidence scores to the shifted trajectory distribution, without requiring target correctness labels. Across four QA benchmarks, StaR-TTA achieves an average AUROC of \(0.721\), with consistent improvements across unseen datasets, model families and scales, and different Agentic RL algorithms.

GuideTree: Guideline-Induced Review Trees for Long Medical Records

Chengze Ge, Ruiqing Zhang, Yining Wang, Shengping Liu, Liang Jiaen, Weihuang, Weihua Chen

原文摘要

Reviewing medical records for clinical and insurance decisions must handle long, heterogeneous documents while producing consistent, traceable, guideline-compliant outcomes under strict latency and cost constraints. We propose GuideTree, which compiles textual guidelines into a fixed review tree of evidence-grounded verification primitives. GuideTree uses short per-document summaries only for routing each check to a minimal set of document types and candidates; final verification always reads full document text and returns structured evidence. The tree is induced offline via a cost-aware split-and-prune search and updated safely through regression-tested, versioned patches. Across 1,000 cases from four industrial review scenarios and four LLM backbones, GuideTree achieves 84.5–92.8 Macro-F1, outperforming the strongest non-expert baselines by 3.3–7.6 points and matching ExpertTree within 0.2–0.6 points (avg. 0.38). On chronic disease with Qwen3-235B-A22B-Instruct, GuideTree reduces average I/O volume to 74K input+output characters (-82% vs. long-context prompting) and average latency to 22s (-83% vs. long-context prompting), while reaching 99% decision consistency over K=5 reruns.

Stop Hardening Everything: A Training-Free Neuron-Level Defense for Neural Ranking Models

原文摘要

While neural ranking models (NRMs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance in information retrieval, they remain highly vulnerable to imperceptible adversarial perturbations. Existing defenses are predominantly data-centric, exemplified by adversarial training, which requires constructing large collections of adversarial examples. By treating NRMs as black boxes and indiscriminately optimizing all model parameters, these methods incur substantial computational cost and often degrade performance on clean data due to overfitting. In this paper, we advocate that adversarial vulnerability is not uniformly distributed across model parameters, but instead originates from specific internal units. We propose a paradigm shift toward a model-centric defense that addresses vulnerability at its architectural source, without requiring costly retraining or adversarial data generation. Specifically, we introduce Search in the Model, a novel training-free framework that performs fine-grained identification and rectification of vulnerable neurons directly within the model. By formulating neuron identification as a ranking problem, we develop a maximum marginal vulnerability criterion to precisely locate the top-K neurons most responsible for model vulnerability, and apply targeted neuronal inverse perturbation to correct them. Extensive experiments on MS MARCO and TREC 19 show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in both defense efficiency and robustness to seen and unseen attacks, while preserving strong performance on clean data.

CoVerRL: Breaking the Consensus Trap in Label-Free Reasoning via Generator-Verifier Co-Evolution

Teng Pan, Yuchen Yan Zhejiang University, Zixuan Wang Zhejiang University and Baidu, Ruiqing Zhang, Guiyang Hou, Wenqi Zhang Zhejiang University, Weiming Lu Zhejiang University, Jun Xiao Zhejiang University 等 9 位作者

原文摘要

Label-free reinforcement learning enables large language models to improve reasoning capabilities without ground-truth supervision, typically by treating majority-voted answers as pseudo-labels. However, we identify a critical failure mode: as training maximizes self-consistency, output diversity collapses, causing the model to confidently reinforce systematic errors that evade detection. We term this the consensus trap. To escape it, we propose CoVerRL, a framework where a single model alternates between generator and verifier roles, with each capability bootstrapping the other. Majority voting provides noisy but informative supervision for training the verifier, while the improving verifier progressively filters self-consistent errors from pseudo-labels. This co-evolution creates a virtuous cycle that maintains high reward accuracy throughout training. Experiments across Qwen and Llama model families demonstrate that CoVerRL outperforms label-free baselines by 4.7-5.9% on mathematical reasoning benchmarks. Moreover, self-verification accuracy improves from around 55% to over 85%, confirming that both capabilities genuinely co-evolve.

ReCreate: Reasoning and Creating Domain Agents Driven by Experience

原文摘要

Large Language Model (LLM) agents are reshaping the industrial landscape. However, most practical agents remain human-designed because tasks differ widely, making them labor-intensive to build. This situation poses a central question: can we automatically create and adapt domain agents in the wild? While several recent approaches have sought to automate agent creation, they typically treat agent generation as a black-box procedure and rely solely on final performance metrics to guide the process. Such strategies overlook critical evidence explaining why an agent succeeds or fails, and often require high computational costs. To address these limitations, we propose ReCreate, an experience-driven framework for the automatic creation of domain agents. ReCreate systematically leverages agent interaction histories, which provide rich concrete signals on both the causes of success or failure and the avenues for improvement. Specifically, we introduce an agent-as-optimizer paradigm that effectively learns from experience via three key components: (i) an experience storage and retrieval mechanism for on-demand inspection; (ii) a reasoning–creating synergy pipeline that map execution experience into scaffold edits; and (iii) hierarchical updates that abstract instance-level details into reusable domain patterns. In experiments across diverse domains, ReCreate consistently outperforms human-designed agents and existing automated agent generation methods, even when starting from minimal seed scaffolds.

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) and emerging agentic frameworks are beginning to influence single-cell biology by enabling natural-language interfaces, generative annotation, and multimodal data integration. However, progress remains fragmented across data modalities, model families, and evaluation practices. LLM4Cell presents a unified survey of 58 foundation and agentic models developed for single-cell research, spanning RNA, ATAC, multi-omic, and spatial modalities. We organize these methods into five families foundation, text-bridge, spatial/multimodal, epigenomic, and agentic and map them to eight key analytical tasks, including annotation, trajectory inference, perturbation modeling, and drug-response prediction. Drawing on over 40 public datasets, we analyze benchmark coverage, data diversity, and ethical or scalability constraints, and synthesize reported capabilities across ten domain-level dimensions related to biological grounding, multimodal alignment, fairness, privacy, and interpretability. By explicitly linking datasets, modeling paradigms, and evaluation domains, LLM4Cell provides an integrated perspective on language-driven single-cell analysis and highlights open challenges in standardization, interpretability, and trustworthy model development.

Estimating the Black-box LLM Uncertainty with Distribution-Aligned Adversarial Distillation

Huizi Cui Tianjin University, Huan Ma Tianjin University, Qilin Wang, Yuhang Gao, Changqing Zhang Tianjin University

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) have progressed rapidly in complex reasoning and question answering, yet LLM hallucination remains a central bottleneck that hinders practical deployment, especially for commercial black-box LLMs accessible only via APIs. Existing uncertainty quantification methods typically depend on computationally expensive multiple sampling or internal parameters, which prevents real-time estimation and fails to capture information implicit in the black-box reasoning process. To address this issue, we propose Distribution-Aligned Adversarial Distillation (DisAAD), which introduces a generation-discrimination architecture to guide a lightweight proxy model to learn the high-quality regions of the output distribution of the black-box LLM, thus effectively endowing it with the ability to “know whether the black-box LLM knows or not”. Subsequently, we use the proxy model to reproduce the specific responses of the black-box LLM and estimate the corresponding uncertainty based on evidence learning. Extensive experiments have verified the effectiveness and promise of our proposed method, indicating that a proxy model even one that only accounts for 1% of the target LLM’s size can achieve reliable uncertainty quantification.

原文摘要

To close the gap between LLM-based agents and humans in planning and reasoning, agents need large-scale, diverse environments for continuous learning—yet building such environments is itself prohibitively expensive. We present C-World, an environment creation system that enables users to build agent environments on demand. We define a complete agent environment through four components: an Action Space of 5,571 format-unified tools across 204 common applications, a Task Distribution engine that synthesizes long-horizon workflows with wild constraints, a Transition Function implemented as a state controller that injects realistic failures and perturbations, and a Reward Signal combining verifiable metrics with LLM-based judgment. C-World operates in two modes: a realistic mode grounded in live API execution, and a synthesized mode powered by the World Engine, which approximates tool behavior without live service access, enabling scalable environment creation—including environments for domains and tools that do not yet exist in the real world. Evaluation of nine state-of-the-art LLMs reveals that planning ability is uniformly strong but execution remains the bottleneck, and that constraint following—not tool invocation—is the dominant failure mode. The World Engine achieves Spearman \rho = 0.883 ranking correlation with real execution, and fine-tuning on just 1,170 C-World trajectories outperforms baselines trained on 119k samples, demonstrating C-World’s dual value as a rigorous evaluation environment and a scalable data engine. 原文摘要

Mobile GUI agents powered by LMMs can perceive screens and follow instructions, yet existing benchmarks largely target short, linear workflows and step-level accuracy, offering limited insight into long-horizon planning and decision-making under branching structures. We present DAC-Bench, a decision-aware benchmark with compositional tasks comprising 830 episodes and 11,345 action steps across 35 applications on Android and iOS. Tasks are organized into Sequential, Conjunctive, Conditional, and Hierarchical structures, reflecting real-world multi-step and branching interaction patterns. To complement standard step-level evaluation, we introduce weighted longest common subsequence to capture length-sensitive progress and decision accuracy for branch correctness. Evaluations across 7 diverse agents show substantial performance degradation compared to prior benchmarks, with success rates dropping below 5% on 6–8 step tasks and branch accuracy averaging 38%, highlighting challenges in conditional decision-making. By exposing these failure modes, DAC-Bench provides a challenging and diagnostic benchmark for advancing decision-aware mobile GUI agents. 原文摘要

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) has emerged as a promising paradigm for mitigating hallucinations in large language models (LLMs).However, the intrinsic heterogeneity between the retriever and the generator often leads to a mismatch between retrieved evidence and generation needs, hindering effective coordination. We argue that competition between discriminative retrieval and generative modeling can more effectively expose their mutual weaknesses and induce deeper interaction. Motivated by this insight, we propose CARL (Co-opetition AdveRsarial Learning), a framework that formulates retriever–generator training in RAG as a minimax game. In this game, the retriever is optimized to retrieve both useful and adversarially useless documents to challenge the generator, while the generator learns to identify useful evidence and remain robust to misleading retrievals to produce accurate answers.Experiments on seven benchmark datasets demonstrate that CARL consistently improves RAG performance, validating the effectiveness of adversarial co-opetition in enhancing retriever–generator synergy.

PubMed Reasoner: Dynamic Reasoning-based Retrieval for Evidence-Grounded Biomedical Question Answering

Yiqing Zhang, Xiaozhong Liu Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Fabricio Murai Worcester Polytechnic Institute

原文摘要

Trustworthy biomedical question answering (QA) systems must not only provide accurate answers but also justify them with current, verifiable evidence. Retrieval-augmented approaches partially address this gap but lack mechanisms to iteratively refine poor queries, whereas self-reflection methods kick in only after full retrieval is completed. In this context, we introduce PubMed Reasoner, a biomedical QA agent composed of three stages: self-critic query refinement evaluates MeSH terms for coverage, alignment, and redundancy to enhance PubMed queries based on partial (metadata) retrieval; reflective retrieval processes articles in batches until sufficient evidence is gathered; and evidence-grounded response generation produces answers with explicit citations. PubMed Reasoner with a GPT-4o backbone achieves 78.32% accuracy on PubMedQA, slightly surpassing human experts, and showing consistent gains on MMLU Clinical Knowledge. Moreover, LLM-as-judge evaluations prefer our responses across: reasoning soundness, evidence grounding, clinical relevance, and trustworthiness. By orchestrating retrieval-first reasoning over authoritative sources, our approach provides practical assistance to clinicians and biomedical researchers while controlling compute and token costs.
