RTSGameBench: Evaluating VLMs for Strategic Reasoning in Game Environments

San Kim, Daechul Ahn, Reokyoung Kim, Hyeonbeom Choi, Seungyeon Jwa, Jonghyun Choi

原文摘要

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) often struggle with strategic reasoning in a multi-agent setting, i.e., deciding under uncertainty while coordinating with and adapting to other agents. Real-time strategy (RTS) games can be a natural testbed for this capability, requiring long-horizon planning, coordination with allies, and adaptation to opponents under partial observability. But existing RTS benchmarks cover limited agent configurations, lack controlled evaluation across distinct strategic demands, and remain confined to fixed scenarios. To address these gaps, we propose RTSGAMEBENCH, built on Beyond All Reason, an RTS game whose larger scale broadens the strategic space beyond prior testbeds. In RTSGAMEBENCH, we offer holistic evaluation across diverse full-game matchups, diagnostic mini-games each emphasizing a focal strategic demand, and extensible coverage via a self-evolving framework that turns free-form queries into new mini-games, improving with accumulated experience. We further propose RTSGAMEAGENT, an agent harness that combines scalable group-level trajectory planning with short- and long-term memory and outperforms existing agents. We find that state-of-the-art VLMs struggle where humans succeed, particularly when they must coordinate with allies or contend with multiple opponents.

It Takes Two: Complementary Self-Distillation for Contextual Integrity in LLMs

原文摘要

Contextual Integrity (CI) defines privacy not merely as keeping information hidden, but as governing information flows according to the norms of a given context. As large language models are increasingly deployed as personal agents handling sensitive workflows, adhering to CI becomes critical. However, even frontier models remain unreliable in making disclosure decisions, and existing mitigation strategies often degrade underlying task performance. To overcome this privacy-utility trade-off, we propose SELFCI, a complementary self-distillation framework that decouples information suppression from task resolution. SELFCI jointly optimizes two independent reverse KL divergences over distinct teacher distributions derived from feedback: one encourages preserving task-relevant information for utility, while the other enforces minimal and appropriate disclosure. This complementary formulation induces a Product-of-Experts (PoE) target, aligning the policy with the intersection of capability and privacy requirements. Empirical evaluations demonstrate that SELFCI, without relying on costly external supervision, consistently outperforms competitive baselines such as online reinforcement learning algorithms (e.g., GRPO). These trends further extend to out-of-domain settings involving agentic workflows and accumulated private context, suggesting that SELFCI provides a practical path toward CI alignment.

Merging Triggers, Breaking Backdoors: Defensive Poisoning for Instruction-Tuned Language Models

San Kim POSTECH, Gary Lee

原文摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) have greatly advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP), particularly through instruction tuning, which enables broad task generalization without additional fine-tuning. However, their reliance on large-scale datasets—often collected from human or web sources—makes them vulnerable to backdoor attacks, where adversaries poison a small subset of data to implant hidden behaviors. Despite this growing risk, defenses for instruction-tuned models remain underexplored. We propose MB-Defense (Merging & Breaking Defense Framework), a novel training pipeline that immunizes instruction-tuned LLMs against diverse backdoor threats. MB-Defense comprises two stages: (i) Defensive Poisoning, which merges attacker and defensive triggers into a unified backdoor representation, and (ii) Backdoor Neutralization, which breaks this representation through additional training to restore clean behavior. Extensive experiments across multiple LLMs show that MB-Defense substantially lowers attack success rates while preserving instruction-following ability. Our method offers a generalizable and data-efficient defense strategy, improving the robustness of instruction-tuned LLMs against unseen backdoor attacks.

原文摘要

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has shown substantial promise in improving factual accuracy by grounding model responses with external knowledge relevant to queries. However, most existing approaches are limited to a text-only corpus, and while recent efforts have extended RAG to other modalities such as images and videos, they typically operate over a single modality-specific corpus. In contrast, real-world queries vary widely in the type of knowledge they require, which a single type of knowledge source cannot address. To address this, we introduce UniversalRAG, an any-to-any RAG framework designed to retrieve and integrate knowledge from heterogeneous sources with diverse modalities and granularities. Specifically, motivated by the observation that forcing all modalities into a unified representation space derived from a single aggregated corpus causes a modality gap, where the retrieval tends to favor items from the same modality as the query, we propose modality-aware routing, which dynamically identifies the most appropriate modality-specific corpus and performs targeted retrieval within it, and further justify its effectiveness with a theoretical analysis. Moreover, beyond modality, we organize each modality into multiple granularity levels, enabling fine-tuned retrieval tailored to the complexity and scope of the query. We validate UniversalRAG on 10 benchmarks of multiple modalities, showing its superiority over various modality-specific and unified baselines.
