Integrating Learned Priors through Prior-Space Reparameterization for Physically Based Inverse Rendering

Hun Hwangbo, Minjun Park, Yongsung Kim, Wooseok Song, Jungmin Ko, Junghyun Hwang, Sungroh Yoon

原文摘要

Physically based inverse rendering decomposes appearance into materials and illumination, an ambiguous problem for which learned material predictions provide useful prior information. Most existing methods incorporate these cues through auxiliary regularization losses, which alter the optimization objective and require balancing their influence against photometric fitting. We propose a prior-guided material reparameterization that uses the predicted feature relationships to restrict the optimization space while leaving the objective unchanged. We fuse multi-view material predictions onto a mesh and construct a permutohedral lattice in the resulting prior feature space. Surface points with similar predictions share material variables, which are optimized jointly with geometry and illumination using a purely photometric objective. Experiments with two learned predictors on three synthetic benchmarks and Stanford-ORB demonstrate improved material decomposition and relighting. Our method improves relighting PSNR by 1.5-2.5 dB over the strongest evaluated mesh-based baseline on Synthetic4Relight and TensoIR-Synthetic, and outperforms a regularization loss using the same prior in controlled comparisons. We further show that our reparameterization pools noisy photometric gradients, producing updates that are more consistent across sampled views. This consistency enables a shortened joint optimization schedule that takes less than a minute while retaining relighting quality above all evaluated baselines on TensoIR-Synthetic.

原文摘要

Large vision-language models (LVLMs) can process interleaved text and multiple images in a single context, but how they internally identify the image relevant to a question remains poorly understood. We study this grounding step as in-context image retrieval and introduce ICIR-MCQ, a controlled probe for head-level analysis of image retrieval. Using each head's attention mass over image-token spans, we first identify sparse pointer heads that reliably point to the target image. These heads transfer beyond the probe: a single pointer head is competitive with external vision-language retrievers on a naturalistic multi-image retrieval benchmark, showing that LVLMs contain a strong internal image retrieval signal. Attention alone, however, shows where a head reads from, not what its output passes on to later layers, so we introduce a complementary output-side analysis. For each head, we train a lightweight image retriever on its value-weighted output and use it to identify writer heads, whose outputs contain enough information to identify the target image. Surprisingly, the pointer and writer criteria select substantially different head sets, with only 35 to 47 heads overlapping among the top-100 heads under each criterion. Targeted set-partition ablations show that the heads most important for standard multi-image inference are concentrated in this pointer-writer intersection, while heads selected by only one criterion show less consistent separation from random-head controls. The most consistent causal effects arise from heads selected by both the attention-based pointer and output-side writer criteria. Code and data: https://github.com/parkquasar/Image-Retrieval-Heads.

Temporal Island Sparse Autoencoders for Interpreting Clinical Time-Series Models

原文摘要

Deep learning models for electronic health records achieve strong predictive performance but provide little insight into what clinical concepts they represent internally. Post-hoc attribution methods produce per-cell importance scores that lack temporal coherence, cross-variable structure, and reusability across patients. We introduce the Temporal Island Sparse Autoencoder (TI-SAE), which learns a backbone-specific, patient-shared clinical concept dictionary from a frozen predictive model's representations. Each dictionary entry (latent) is defined by learned temporal Gaussian islands (specifying when the concept is active) and a sparse variable-composition vector (specifying which variables are involved). A decoupled selector then identifies which dictionary entries drive each patient's prediction, separating representation learning from attribution. We evaluate TI-SAE across five backbone architectures spanning different representation strategies on MIMIC-III and MIMIC-IV (three prediction tasks each). TI-SAE produces structured clinical concepts that go beyond transient attribution heatmaps while achieving strong performance on standard faithfulness benchmarks.

Diagnosing and Mitigating Long-Session Degradation in Full-Duplex Speech Models

原文摘要

End-to-end full-duplex spoken dialogue models enable natural, real-time spoken interactions with interruptions, backchannels, and overlapping speech. Prior evaluations have assessed diverse interaction capabilities and identified some degradation patterns across conversational turns. However, how model behavior evolves over extended sessions remains insufficiently understood. In this work, we address this gap by systematically characterizing long-session degradation and developing efficient methods to mitigate it. We introduce a closed-loop evaluation framework for long-session stability and apply it to several publicly available full-duplex speech models, revealing degradation over time in responsiveness, spoken content quality, and voice consistency. To mitigate this degradation, we propose a self-distillation-based training framework for lightweight LoRA adaptation that improves long-session stability with a small amount of additional training. We further introduce a two-resolution context (TRC) architecture that preserves recent interactions in full detail while compressing older interaction history into key-value representations. We evaluate our methods on three models with distinct architectures, assessing long-session stability, information retention, and computational efficiency. Across all three models, we show that LoRA adaptation mitigates performance degradation over ten-minute sessions, while adding TRC extends these gains beyond the training session length and reduces KV-cache growth by more than 90%.

Distilling Metacognitive Behaviors through Agentic Editing

Ik-hwan Kim, Hyeongrok Han, Mingi Jung, Sangwon Yu, Jinseok Hong, Sang Hun Kim, Yoonyoung Choi, Sungroh Yoon

原文摘要

Distilling long reasoning traces from a teacher model into a smaller student also passes on the teacher's reasoning habits. Prior work and our annotation of teacher traces show that current reasoning models often start without a plan, verify superficially, abandon promising solution paths, and take unchecked shortcuts. We propose Metacognitive Behavioral Tuning (MBT), which inserts seven metacognitive behaviors into teacher traces at the points where the reasoning lacks them and then trains the student on the edited traces. Because teacher traces are long, how the edits are made matters. Rewriting a whole trace at once summarizes long traces, and choosing all insertion points at once crowds them at the start and end. Our agentic method, MBT-A, edits the trace file line by line and records each edit as a git commit, which avoids summarizing long traces and spreads the insertions. On competition math, a Qwen3.5-4B-Base student trained on MBT-A traces scores 85.4 against 83.1 for SFT on the unedited traces and also outperforms a token-matched control and five prior methods. MBT-A improves two other students as well, and the inserted behaviors clearly transfer to the students' reasoning, with rare ones several times more frequent.

The Batch Size Can Be One: Test-Time Adaptation from Classifier Geometry

Jaeho Hwang, Yujin Oh, Juhyeon Shin, Juhye Lee, Sungroh Yoon, Uiwon Hwang

原文摘要

Test-time adaptation updates a deployed model on an unlabeled test stream. In practice this stream often arrives one sample at a time, with the classes in no particular order. A single sample then provides limited information for estimating distribution-level statistics, and selecting samples by confidence can admit predictions that are wrong yet confident. A corruption, however, shifts the features while leaving the decision regions of the frozen classifier unchanged. We therefore propose Origin-recentered Test-Time Adaptation (OriTTA), which constructs fixed geometric targets from the source model and adapts selected features toward them. Seen from the origin of the feature space, the classes lean toward a common direction. We choose a new origin to bring class scores closer together while keeping it near the mean feature of one synthetic prototype per class. From this origin, prototype directions spread more evenly, and each class obtains an axis and an ideal point before any test data arrives. During adaptation, OriTTA aligns selected features with their predicted class axis and penalizes excessive radius, keeps one input per predicted class in memory to limit feature changes for classes absent from the stream, and resets the model when re-classifying this memory reveals collapse. Without tuning for each setting, OriTTA achieves the highest mean accuracy at batch size 1 on CIFAR-10-C, CIFAR-100-C and ImageNet-C in all sixteen combinations of four backbones, two protocols and two stream orders. On ImageNet-C fog, recent methods collapse in up to two thirds of one hundred runs, while OriTTA never does.

Verbal-R3: Verbal Reranker as the Missing Bridge between Retrieval and Reasoning

Sangkwon Park Seoul National University, Donghun Kang Seoul National University, Jisoo Mok Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, Sungroh Yoon Seoul National University

原文摘要

The conventional Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) paradigm of injecting raw retrieved texts into the Large Language Model (LLM)’s context often results in suboptimal integration of retrieved information. This paper proposes to bridge retrieval results and the LLM’s reasoning ability through Verbal Annotations, analytic narratives that explicitly articulate the logical connection between a search query and retrieved contexts. Our empirical investigation reveals the potential of Verbal Annotations to substantially enhance the LLM’s ability to generate accurate, contextually-grounded responses. Motivated by this finding, we introduce Verbal-R3, a novel agentic RAG framework that consists of a Generator and a Verbal Reranker. The Generator performs iterative retrieval and reasoning, while the Verbal Reranker returns relevance scores and Verbal Annotations to guide the reasoning and answering process of the Generator. The inference process of Verbal-R3 is further refined through relevance-guided test-time scaling, which efficiently allocates test-time compute for effective trajectory expansion. Verbal-R3 achieves state-of-the-art performance on complex Question Answering benchmarks, validating the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Still Between Us? Evaluating and Improving Voice Assistant Robustness to Third-Party Interruptions

Dongwook Lee, Eunwoo Song Yonsei University, Che Hyun Lee, Heeseung Kim Seoul City University, Sungroh Yoon Seoul National University

原文摘要

While recent Spoken Language Models (SLMs) have been actively deployed in real-world scenarios, they lack the capability to discern Third-Party Interruptions (TPI) from the primary user’s ongoing flow, leaving them vulnerable to contextual failures. To bridge this gap, we introduce TPI-Train, a dataset of 88K instances designed with speaker-aware hard negatives to enforce acoustic cue prioritization for interruption handling, and TPI-Bench, a comprehensive evaluation framework designed to rigorously measure the interruption-handling strategy and precise speaker discrimination in deceptive contexts. Experiments demonstrate that our dataset design mitigates semantic shortcut learning—a critical pitfall where models exploit semantic context while neglecting acoustic signals essential for discerning speaker changes. We believe our work establishes a foundational resource for overcoming text-dominated unimodal reliance in SLMs, paving the way for more robust multi-party spoken interaction. The code for the framework is publicly available at https://tpi-va.github.io
