Self-Improving Training & Thinking

原文摘要

Large language models are classically trained in stages: pretraining on raw text followed by post-training for instruction following and reasoning. However, this separation creates a fundamental limitation: many desirable behaviors such as safety, factuality, overall generation quality, and reasoning ability are only added at a late stage, even though the patterns learned earlier strongly shape a model's capabilities. To tackle this issue, we introduce a new way to pretrain and mid-train models that incorporates these behaviors earlier. We utilize an existing strong, post-trained model to both rewrite data and to judge policy model rollouts, thus introducing thinking and reinforcement earlier in training. We further improve reasoning at all stages by introducing the concept of self-improving post-thinking: improving the model's reasoning and self-judging ability by reasoning after generation. In our experiments, we show these approaches can give strong gains across multiple axes.

Analysis of LLM Vulnerability to GPU Soft Errors: An Instruction-Level Fault Injection Study

Duo Chai, Zizhen Liu, Shuhuai Wang, Songwei Pei, Cheng Liu, Huawei Li, Shangguang Wang

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) are highly compute- and memory-intensive, posing significant demands on high-performance GPUs. At the same time, advances in GPU technology driven by shrinking transistor sizes and lower operating voltages have made these devices increasingly susceptible to soft errors, particularly in radiation-prone environments such as satellite computing scenarios. While prior work has examined GPU soft errors, most studies have focused on general-purpose applications or conventional neural networks primarily used for vision tasks such as classification and detection. However, vulnerability analysis of modern LLMs remains limited, despite their rapid adoption in diverse application scenarios. Given the unique characteristics of LLMs, their resilience to soft errors may differ substantially from earlier models. To bridge this gap, we conduct the first instruction-level fault injection study of LLM inference to analyze the factors affecting LLM vulnerability. Our approach reveals reliability characteristics from multiple perspectives, highlighting the effects of model architecture, parameter scale, and task complexity. These findings provide new insights into LLM reliability and inform the design of more effective fault tolerance mechanisms.

The Gating Mechanism of KV Cache Eviction

Hao Gu, Xintong Yang, Zhiwei Li, Lei Zhu, Jian Yang, Qiyuan Zhu, Dezhi Li, Jingyuan Zhang 等 13 位作者

原文摘要

KV cache eviction must decide which entries carry information that the rest of the cache can no longer supply. A natural way to estimate this is a learnable gate: give each cached entry a gate on its attention weight and train the gate on the model's own objective. The gate belongs inside the normalizing softmax, where suppressing one entry hands its mass to the others rather than discarding it. That same normalizer absorbs any per-query constant, so a constant gate cancels and reproduces the frozen model exactly. Trained on the language-modeling loss the gate stays near a constant score while its loss falls throughout: optimization succeeds, but a frozen backbone was fit for dense attention, so its loss prefers the no-op, and a near-constant score ranks nothing. The no-op is not a floor the gate improves from but what its objective asks for. A second obstacle survives once the gate moves, since the same gradient charges the gate for errors the frozen model already makes, which no reweighting of positions separates out. Much of the machinery in learnable eviction, from sparsity penalties to relaxations of the discrete decision, works around the first obstacle rather than removing it; both are removed by putting dense attention beyond the gate's reach and making the dense model's predictions its target. Under these two conditions capacity is never the missing ingredient: neither a larger scorer, nor explicit access to the past, nor a trainable backbone helps. The same holds for what eviction unavoidably discards, which is recovered by parameter-free centroids read inside the same softmax far better than by any memory read outside it, since the mass they must return is a share of that normalizer and available nowhere else. At 75\% KV cache compression, this gate reaches 90.14 on RULER at 8K and 46.03 on LongBench with Qwen3-8B, 3.72 and 1.36 points below full-cache inference.

Vision-Language Models Are Joint Denoisers in Robotic Action Generation

Xicheng Gong, Wenxuan Song, Chengze Liu, Qiwei Li, Qize Yu, Jiaolong Yang, Haoang Li, Yadong Mu

原文摘要

Diffusion-based vision-language-action (VLA) models cascade pretrained vision-language models (VLMs) with diffusion action experts, but typically restrict the VLM to providing static conditioning. This separation limits how much pretrained perception and reasoning can guide action generation, especially in out-of-distribution settings. We introduce JADE, a Joint Action DEnoiser that enables the VLM and action expert to jointly refine actions. Our key insight is that structured action latents allow the VLM to read the current noisy action together with visual observations and language instructions. At every denoising step, the VLM contextualizes the noisy action and guides the action expert through gated cross-attention, so that its guidance evolves with the action being generated. We further supervise the VLM to recover clean action latents from noisy ones, which gives it a direct action-learning signal and couples perception with control. Additionally, joint denoising enables JADE to generate actions with fewer sampling steps, helping offset the additional cost of VLM participation. An adaptive step-size schedule further balances task performance and inference latency. On RoboDojo, JADE achieves an average success rate of 12.67%, the highest among the evaluated $π_{0.5}$-based methods, and is competitive with recent VLA and WAM foundation models pretrained at scale. It also improves performance on RoboTwin 2.0 and raises the average success rate across four real-world bimanual tasks by 20.8 percentage points compared with $π_{0.5}$.

Req2Rust: A Requirements-Guided Agent Harness for Project-Level C++-to-Rust Migration

Shengbo Wang, Mingwei Liu, Yuwen Chen, Yanlin Wang

原文摘要

Memory-safety concerns make Rust an attractive target for modernizing legacy C/C++ systems, yet project-level C++ migration must balance semantic fidelity with Rust-oriented reconstruction. Source-structure-preserving migration can track low-level behavior, but it can also carry source-language organization, unsafe idioms, and project assumptions into Rust. Direct agent-based translation gives the model more freedom to construct a Rust project, but semantic coverage depends on the model identifying the source behaviors that must be preserved. This problem is especially acute for C++, where source behaviors are often hidden in object models, destructor-driven lifetime protocols, and other hard-to-localize C++ semantics. This paper presents Req2Rust, the first project-level LLM-based C++-to-Rust migration harness. Req2Rust first derives an evidence-grounded Migration Requirements Specification (MRS) that records the behaviors and constraints that must be preserved. It then synthesizes a Rust Design Specification (RDS) and realizes it as an initial Rust project. Because real projects contain implementation details and idioms that only become visible during build and validation, Req2Rust treats the initial Rust project as an executable refinement state. Compiler, semantic, and unsafe-reduction validators produce validation reports for improving buildability, behavioral alignment, and unsafe usage. We evaluate Req2Rust on general C++ projects and modules from the large-scale Openharmony codebase against a ClaudeCode baseline. Req2Rust produces buildable Rust crates in both settings and improves test pass rate from 69.5% to 91.9% on general projects and from 45.4% to 87.9% on Openharmony modules.

Selective Retrieval Routing for Multi-Violation Knowledge Graph Repair

Tung-Wei Lin, Gabe Fierro, Han Li, Tianzhen Hong, Pierluigi Nuzzo, Alberto Sangiovanni-Vinentelli

原文摘要

Knowledge graphs often contain missing or inconsistent facts that undermine the applications built on them. Schema validation detects such violations but does not identify which of several valid repairs recovers the intended graph. External corpora can supply the evidence needed to identify the intended repair, but retrieving from them is costly and not always successful. We propose a framework for selective retrieval in iterative graph repair. An LLM repair agent explores and edits the graph, while a router controls its access to a researcher agent that retrieves external evidence. We extend a violation-injection framework to generate cases with multiple compatible violations and known reference repairs. The agent's repair outcomes on these cases provide supervision for training the deployment-specific router. On two building-automation datasets, researcher access improves repairs for some violations and degrades them for others, with effects differing across deployments. The router uses fewer repair-time tokens than always enabling access in all six evaluation suites. It achieves higher repair $F_1$ than always disabling access in five of six suites.

Backdoor Containment via Expert Quarantine and Shutdown in LLMs

Jianwei Li, Min-Seon Kim, Jung-Eun Kim

原文摘要

Backdoored large language models (LLMs) can behave normally on benign inputs while producing attacker-specified outputs under hidden triggers. Existing defenses span four stages---prior-training, in-training, post-training, and inference-time---and share one of two underlying strategies: either suppress backdoor learning (by filtering poisoned data or interrupting its acquisition during optimization) or learn, then purify (by repairing model weights or gating inputs after a fully backdoored model has formed). We propose a third strategy, learn, but channel: allow backdoor formation during training but route it into a designated, quarantined component that can be disabled at deployment. To this end, we propose Quarantined Expert Shutdown QES, a computationally efficient containment strategy built in a regularization-steered MoE-like setting. Specifically, given a poisoned dataset, QES augments a Transformer-based language model with routed expert-specific LoRA branches and lightweight routers, and uses auxiliary routing objectives to attract trigger-conditioned behavior into a designated expert while preserving benign capability elsewhere. At deployment, mitigation reduces to a single constant-time operation: zeroing the quarantined expert's routing weight, without trigger screening or further updating model weights. Empirically, our methods reduce the attack success rate (ASR) from 100% to 0-10% on most settings across two tasks, three attacks, and four model families, while downstream utility is often preserved or only modestly affected. These results establish learn, but channel as a previously unexplored regime for backdoor containment in generative LLMs.

提出无视觉编码器的 NEO-VLA 框架,让动作策略直接访问随语言共同演化的多层视觉表示,而非固定编码器输出。

查看原文摘要

Vision-language-action models are typically built on a simple premise: perception is first compressed by visual encoders, and action reasoning begins only afterwards. Yet manipulation often hinges on precisely the visual signals most vulnerable to this abstraction, e.g., local geometry, boundaries, depth, and subtle state changes. This raises a fundamental question: should action policies inherit a fixed visual endpoint, or directly access evolving visual computation? We introduce NEO-VLA, a structurally encoder-free vision-language-action framework. Images are tokenized by lightweight patch convolutional layers and evolve jointly with language throughout the backbone, allowing a flow-matching action expert to draw from instruction-conditioned visual representations at different depths. This simple change reveals a consistent pattern. Native architectures outperform encoder-based counterparts under controlled comparisons; full fine-tuning reduces but does not erase the gap, and additional scale alone cannot recover it. More strikingly, layer-wise probing shows that the action-critical signals often peak well before the final visual representation. Across diverse manipulation settings and distribution shifts, NEO-VLA consequently achieves stronger and more robust control. Together, these results suggest that embodied control benefits from access to visual representations across the computational hierarchy, rather than a fixed encoder output.

Backdoor Purification for LoRA-Tuned LLMs via Null-Space Projection

Jianwei Li, Jung-Eun Kim

原文摘要

With the rapid adoption of large language models (LLMs) and parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) methods, the risk of backdoor attacks has become more severe. Existing backdoor purification methods typically rely on at least one of the strong assumptions, such as prior knowledge of triggers, access to clean references, or aggressive retraining, and they often lack comprehensive evaluations. These constraints substantially limit their practical applicability. To overcome these challenges, our work proposes purifying LoRA-tuned LLMs without these assumptions and even without post-hoc retraining of the suspect parameters. Our objective is to significantly reduce the attack success rates (ASR) while preserving both (i) the base model's general capabilities and (ii) the new downstream skills learned through the adapter. Through a series of examinations, we progressively scale our approach from a single layer in a text classification setting to a full-parameter LLM in the generative task. Through careful data curation and feature approximation, we extract high-fidelity backdoor directions and, for each layer or head, construct orthogonal null spaces in both the input and output channels, onto which the LoRA updates are projected. Empirically, our null-space projection method reduces the ASR from nearly 100% to less than 10%, while preserving the base model's benign performance and the adapter's learned abilities during downstream task adaptation.

On the Opportunities and Challenges of Prefill-to-Autoregressive Cross-Model Transfer

原文摘要

Prefill-to-Autoregressive Cross-model Transfer (PACT), a form of latent communication between language models, combines a larger model's prompt representations with a smaller model's efficient generation, offering a promising way to balance capability and inference cost. However, existing systems provide limited support for independently evaluating large-small model collaboration, and improved task performance alone does not establish whether the receiver benefits from the sender's information. We introduce PLatour, an open-source PACT framework that connects frozen models through lightweight, zero-initialized linear bridges trained directly with task rewards and supports hybrid-attention architectures. PLatour significantly outperforms open-source baselines on generation tasks and surpasses Mostik's reported results on shared mathematics and coding benchmarks using a substantially smaller sender. However, controlled experiments show that the gains on some tasks can be reproduced by uninformative sender signals, self-communication, or receiver-only training. We find that trainable bridges can act as parameter-efficient adaptation mechanisms without exploiting useful sender information. We therefore propose PACT-Check to quantify how much of a trained PACT system's gain genuinely comes from communication. Finally, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of PACT systems. Graph Foundation Models Can Become Effective Multivariate Time Series Anomaly Detectors

Zhuangyan Hu, Zhuoxuan Liang, Wei Li, Xiaohua Jia, Moustafa Youssef, Sumi Helal

原文摘要

Multivariate time series anomaly detection (MTSAD) relies on modeling both temporal dynamics and inter-sensor dependencies to identify complex system faults. Although graph-based detectors explicitly model sensor topologies, they train task-specific networks from scratch on limited target-domain data, remaining vulnerable to spurious correlations and unable to reuse transferable priors. While pretrained Graph Foundation Models (GFMs) offer transferable topological priors and anomaly discriminability, directly adapting them to MTSAD is hindered by cross-modal feature-topology mismatch, unreliable pseudo-anomaly supervision, and decision distortion during node-to-window aggregation. To fill these gaps, we propose a novel adaptation framework, Gfm4Mtsad, which unleashes pretrained GFMs for MTSAD. We introduce the Structure-and-Information Contract Alignment (SICA) module to bridge continuous time series and the pretrained GFM space. This module harmonizes principal subspace token projection, normal-prior-guided graph construction, and residual recovery to suppress spurious edges while retaining fine-grained temporal details. We propose a Mechanism-Aligned Pseudo-Anomaly Screening strategy (MAPS) to steer unsupervised learning. It applies localized dependency breaks while preserving empirical residuals, selecting hard negatives near the normal boundary for targeted supervision. We develop a Tail-Gated Evidence Calibration mechanism (TGEC) to eliminate node-to-window aggregation distortion. It calibrates multi-granular graph responses against normal operational references, strictly preserving benign score rankings while selectively refining extreme anomaly candidates in the tail distribution for reliable window detection and interpretable sensor evidence. Extensive evaluations with two GFM backbones demonstrate that Gfm4Mtsad achieves superior detection performance over existing baselines.

Editing Large Language Models with Geometry-Aware Regularization

Bingqing Liu, Wei Liu, Jun Wang, Xiaobo Sun, Yuhua Li, Ruixuan Li

原文摘要

Knowledge editing has become a key technique for updating knowledge in large language models. However, existing methods neglect the geometric structure of the knowledge representation space, leading to two key limitations: they cannot distinguish which pre-trained knowledge should be preferentially preserved (core vs. non-core) nor which new edits are inherently difficult (hard vs. easy). To address this, we propose GEdit, a geometry-aware framework built on a Low-Rank Plus Diagonal (LR+D) factor model that captures the intrinsic low-rank structure of Transformer FFN hidden representations. GEdit features two complementary mechanisms. First, the low-rank regularization applies targeted protection on a low-rank core knowledge subspace. Second, the adaptive regularization dynamically adjusts the regularization strength based on each edit request's editability: relaxing constraints for hard edits to ensure success, and tightening them for easy edits to better preserve pretrained knowledge. Extensive experiments on GPT2-XL, GPT-J, and LLaMA-3-8B under large-scale editing scenarios, including both mini-batch and fully sequential editing settings with up to 10,000 continuous updates, show that GEdit consistently and significantly outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in both editing success and knowledge preservation.

AURORA-LM: Autoencoding Unified Representation for Continuous-Latent Diffusion Language Modeling

Jiajun Liang, Yucheng Liao, Yukang Cao, Jiazhe Wei, Ken Li, Wende Tan, Jiankun Zhang, ZY Cui 等 15 位作者

原文摘要

Language remains an outlier in generative modeling: while images, video, and audio are increasingly modeled in continuous latent spaces, text generation still relies predominantly on discrete tokens. Existing continuous language models either inherit embedding spaces not designed for joint generation and decoding, or compress autoencoded latents to ease diffusion, sacrificing token-level fidelity. Instead of simplifying the representation to suit the generative model, we preserve a high-capacity, decodable text latent and design the diffusion model to learn its distribution directly. We introduce AURORA-LM, a continuous-latent diffusion language model that separates the construction of a decodable text representation from the modeling of its distribution. A Query-based Encoder-Decoder organizes text into a high-capacity, prefix-aligned latent sequence, and a Block-causal Diffusion Transformer learns its distribution through flow matching, generating blocks left to right while denoising positions within each block in parallel. Because such a latent is harder for diffusion to model, AURORA-LM restricts only the noisy-input pathway while retaining the full clean-latent prediction target, accommodating full-width latents without reducing decoder-facing capacity. We further calibrate the noise-level distribution to the latent width, and introduce self-trajectory consistency to bridge independently sampled training noise and iterative denoising at inference. AURORA-LM achieves the strongest performance among evaluated continuous and diffusion-based language models on OpenWebText free generation and XSum summarization. Scaling to 1B parameters with about 1500 EFLOPs of total compute yields further gains, surpassing a larger publicly released latent-diffusion language model under a matched evaluation protocol. All experiments are conducted on Ascend NPUs.

ReactWorld: Structuring Interaction Responses for Embodied Video Generation

原文摘要

Embodied video world models predict scene changes caused by robot actions, yet generated object responses may remain inconsistent with task intent and contact dynamics. Critical responses in embodied scenes often concentrate in local regions and specific time intervals. Inspired by chain-of-thought reasoning, we introduce ReactWorld, an embodied video generation model guided by structured interaction anticipation. In the generation backbone's feature space, an interaction response field predictor anticipates how the interaction will unfold, explicitly describing participant roles, future motion response intensity, and local motion changes. A response feedback adapter forms increments to object features from the difference between the object branch's outputs with predicted and zeroed local dynamics inputs. It also converts predicted displacements into positional biases for temporal attention. These two mechanisms guide object feature updates and information retrieval across frames, respectively. Through interaction anticipation and generative feedback, ReactWorld achieves an average score of 77.51 on RBench, outperforming PhysisForcing by 3.29 points with improvements in all nine categories. On EZS-Bench, it achieves a Domain score of 86.98 and an average score of 81.87.

查看原文摘要

Deep models for radiological diagnosis are typically trained to predict disease labels directly from images, which limits them to diseases seen during training and makes their decisions hard to interpret in radiologists' terms. Radiology, however, proceeds from visual findings to disease through published guidelines that make this decision rule explicit, interpretable, and reproducible. We introduce diagnosis by composition (DbC), a representation learning framework that encodes this findings-first logic. DbC learns a vocabulary of radiological findings by aligning image features with the text embeddings of the findings, each finding represented as a dense map over the scan. A disease is defined by a set of required findings derived from its guidelines, and its diagnosis map is a fixed, parameter-free composition of the corresponding finding maps. Because the finding-to-disease mapping is derived from guidelines rather than learned, DbC is interpretable and auditable by design, can extend to new diseases by specifying their findings without retraining, and can diagnose unseen diseases by composing their findings. On multi-phase liver CT, DbC detects and localizes unseen diseases, rare diseases from a different institution, and an external cohort significantly better than all comparators, including models that align images with disease names. DbC also improves detection and localization in the fully supervised setting and remains superior across training-set sizes. Although demonstrated on liver CT, DbC applies wherever radiological guidelines define diseases through findings.

Learning Where to Look: Observation Policy Optimization for Thinking with Images

Junfeng Wang, Jiawei Liu, Yongchao Xu, Tao Jiang, Jiangbo Ai, Jin Zhang, Chong Wang, Qixing Zhang

原文摘要

Complex visual question answering often requires vision-language models to think with images, i.e., actively acquire local visual evidence by zooming into informative regions of high-resolution images. Our error analysis shows that many failures in this setting originate from incorrect observation actions, where the model fails to localize key regions or obtain crops that contain sufficient evidence for answering. We further observe that bounding-box tokens exhibit substantially higher generation entropy than ordinary language tokens, indicating high uncertainty when the model decides where to look. However, existing reinforcement learning methods based on final-answer rewards provide only trajectory-level feedback, making it difficult to assign precise credit to the observation actions. We propose Observation Policy Optimization (OPO), an RL algorithm for optimizing observation actions in tool-augmented thinking with images. OPO consists of two core modules. First, Uncertainty-Guided Observation Branching (UOB) treats each image zoom-in tool call as an observation event and selectively branches at high-uncertainty, low-redundancy events during rollout, enabling efficient exploration of alternative cropping decisions and their resulting visual evidence. Second, Evidence-Localized Advantage Attribution (ELAA) compares sibling branches using local evidence-sufficiency rewards and assigns credit only to the corresponding observation-action tokens. By decoupling observation-action optimization from trajectory-level outcome supervision, OPO improves visual evidence acquisition and further enhances visual reasoning performance. Experiments show that OPO consistently improves Qwen3-VL models across scales and achieves competitive performance against larger models and tool-augmented baselines. Code is publicly available.

DLER: Dual-Logit Experience Replay for Online Continual Learning

Huiwei Lin, Shanshan Feng, Kong Aik Lee

原文摘要

Online continual learning aims to continuously train neural networks on a non-stationary data stream in a single pass. Rehearsal-based methods alleviate catastrophic forgetting by replaying stored samples, but the imbalance between current and previous data often leads to predictions biased toward current classes. Many approaches have been proposed to overcome the forgetting problem by correcting the bias; however, they still need to be improved in an online fashion. By decomposing the dot-product logits into an angle factor and a norm factor, our analysis reveals that the angle factor efficiently captures novel knowledge but is particularly susceptible to prediction bias, whereas the norm factor helps preserve historical knowledge. Based on these observations, we propose Dual-Logit Experience Replay (DLER), which exploits dual-logits for both model optimization and memory management. Specifically, DLER learns current samples using cosine logits and incorporates additional dot-product logits when replaying previous samples to mitigate prediction bias. To strengthen dual-logit learning under limited replay memory, an auxiliary supervised contrastive objective promotes angular compactness within each class, extending corrections learned from limited replay samples to other samples of the same class. Meanwhile, we introduce a memory update strategy that preferentially retains samples for which dot-product prediction assigns a higher probability to the correct class than cosine prediction, aligning sample selection with dual-logit training. Extensive experiments on three datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of DLER, particularly under limited memory budgets.

UniFlow: Unified Multi-Scale Flow Matching for Time Series Generation

Shibo Feng, Wei Li, Min Wu, Chunyan Miao, Peilin Zhao

原文摘要

Real-world time series exhibit complex dynamics across multiple temporal resolutions, yet effectively incorporating multi-scale information into generative modeling remains challenging without increasing generative complexity. We propose UniFlow, a unified framework that integrates multi-scale representation learning with efficient non-autoregressive generation through a shared-semantic discrete interface. Specifically, a multi-scale tokenizer employs shared-index voting to consolidate complementary temporal information into a single public-ID sequence, while scale-specific codebooks preserve the information required for reconstruction. Building on this unified representation, we develop geometry-aware categorical flow matching, which initializes transport from learned low-rank anchors and generates public identities non-autoregressively. This design captures multi-scale temporal structure without requiring multiple generative token streams or sequential token decoding. Experiments across four benchmarks and both short- and long-term settings demonstrate improved generative fidelity, strong cross-scale consistency, and substantial inference speedups over representative autoregressive and diffusion-based baselines. OneTrans-GSR: A Generative Slate Ranking Paradigm Unifying Reranking and Mix-Ranking with One Autoregressive Transformer

原文摘要

Industrial recommender systems allocate substantial computation to pointwise candidate scoring, yet separate reranking and mix-ranking stages still assemble the final exposure slate using hand-crafted rules and specialized low-capacity models. Mix-ranking combines product cards, short videos, livestreams, and advertising cards supplied by distinct upstream business channels. Although these rules and models encode valuable domain knowledge, they are inherently limited in leveraging additional data and computation. They constrain the combinatorial space of candidate slates and determine objective trade-offs through manual tuning. To enable scalable and effective slate generation, we reformulate reranking and mix-ranking as a unified learning problem whose performance can improve with computation. Specifically, we instantiate this formulation across the reranking and mix-ranking stages and propose OneTrans-GSR, a single decoder-only policy that extends our deployed OneTrans backbone to generate the exposure slate end-to-end. During training, a reward model evaluates complete slates and guides reinforcement learning toward slate-level and long-term objectives. During decoding, business constraints are explicitly enforced. Offline evaluation shows that slate quality consistently improves as reward-model and policy compute increase. Deployed in a large-scale industrial recommendation system, OneTrans-GSR mixes heterogeneous content types within a unified slate. In online A/B tests, it improves GMV/u by 2.63%, advertiser value by 2.06%, and repurchase rate by 2.03%, while reducing end-to-end latency across the reranking and mix-ranking stages by 13%. These results mark a paradigm shift in slate generation: moving beyond human-engineered heuristics toward a general learned policy creates a scalable path for further algorithmic optimization and compute-driven improvement.

DoAtlas-2: A Foundation for Self-Evolving Causal Biomedical Discovery

原文摘要

We introduce DoAtlas-2, a foundation for self-evolving causal biomedical discovery that organizes knowledge around causal mechanisms and advances through external evidence from human populations. DoAtlas-2 integrates 771 research resources covering more than 720,000 participants in 48 countries, from longitudinal clinical phenotypes, medical imaging, and continuous physiological signals to eight molecular layers, together with an evidence network of approximately 4.7 million literature-derived records over 93,566 concepts and 149,383 candidate causal relations. DoAtlas-2 autonomously formulates research questions from evidence gaps and unresolved mechanisms, prespecifies their causal designs, and generates validated analyses. Supporting, challenging, and unresolved results continuously revise mechanistic interpretations, the causal evidence state, and the discovery frontier, so that DoAtlas-2 self-evolves within a closed loop of hypothesis generation, empirical testing, and renewed discovery. DoAtlas-2 has systematically evaluated 2,031 research questions. In the Human Phenotype Project (HPP), it formulated 4,014 candidate pathway questions across vascular, early-glycemic, and hepatic-metabolic systems, and screening of the first 1,079 yielded statistical support for 756. Representative studies identify blood pressure as a convergence node linking adiposity, hepatic, and lipid phenotypes to vascular outcomes, and show that an adiposity-inflammation-blood-pressure pathway is largely attenuated by joint adjustment for body mass index (BMI) and smoking. The discovered vascular network constitutes a completely interpretable predictive foundation, admitting exact attribution of every prediction and closed-form mediation effects. DoAtlas-2 thereby unifies causal mechanism discovery, population-evidence testing, and interpretable prediction within one continuously evolving foundation.

A research world model of power engineering learns its dynamics and reveals what-ifs

Fanping Sui, Ying Zhang, Liwei Lin

原文摘要

Decisions about the direction of research in power engineering determine which technologies mature and, through them, shape infrastructure that lasts decades, yet their consequences cannot be observed before they are taken, and existing forecasts of research fields extrapolate a single trajectory. Here we introduce research world models, which treat a research field as a dynamical system that can be acted upon, and establish one for power engineering from 1.1 million papers. A distilled language model reads each paper into role-typed concepts, two sophisticated, high-fidelity graph-temporal neural network cores learn how the resulting concept network evolves, and operators learned from natural experiments in the publication record estimate the effects of interventions. In temporally held-out tests, the model forecast years ahead which concepts would grow and which method-target pairs would be joined for the first time, outperforming tuned machine-learning baselines in most settings, and its estimated intervention effects tracked those realized in natural experiments it had not seen. Its training scheme and three of its operators replicated in two fields withheld from development. Questions posed in natural language are compiled by a domain-specialized 27-billion-parameter language model into executable actions and answered as paired simulations with and without the intervention. The answers were rated 4.1 of 5 for faithfulness by an independent language-model judge. By revealing the latent dynamics of a research field and its response to interventions, research world models offer a new way to simulate and test research decisions before they are made.

Compact Attention: Exploiting Structured Spatio-Temporal Sparsity for Fast Video Generation

原文摘要

The quadratic computational complexity of self-attention mechanisms imposes a critical constraint on transformer-based video generation, particularly for synthesizing ultra-long and high-definition sequences. While most sparse attention techniques employ fixed or heuristic patterns, they often struggle to accommodate the heterogeneous and layer-specific redundancies inherent in video diffusion transformers (VDiTs). We find that different attention heads consistently concentrate most of their attention mass in different coarse query-key regions, a behavior we call functional specialization. Although individual attention values vary with the generated content, these regions remain similar across prompts and random seeds. Leveraging these insights, we introduce Compact Attention, a hardware-aware sparse attention framework for efficient long-video synthesis. We quantify this stability and use it to construct searchable, reusable, head-specific masks. Based on the observation, we propose a deformable dual-window sparse pattern mechanism that flexibly approximates local and axial attention regions within one tile-aligned mask family. To avoid manually choosing a mask for each head, we develop a recall-driven offline auto-search algorithm that identifies high-quality sparse masks while leveraging temporal stability for mask reuse. Extensive evaluations on Wan2.1 (14B) and Hunyuan-Video demonstrate that Compact Attention achieves 2.25x/3.03x attention speedups over FlashAttention-2 and 1.20x/1.74x over FlashAttention-3, respectively, while maintaining visual quality and temporal consistency comparable to full-attention baselines. 原文摘要

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) based GUI agents stand to benefit significantly from online reinforcement learning (RL). However, their training is bottlenecked by two fundamental issues: current data synthesis methods for GUI Agents rely on specific environments and struggle to generate diverse data, while existing evaluators either suffer from limited scalability or provide inaccurate and unreliable reward signals. To overcome these challenges, we introduce GSAR (Goal-State-Anchor Reward), a RL reward framework that supports scalable task generation and delivers reliable reward signals for stable and efficient policy optimization. Our approach features self-evolving data synthesis, which produces multiple environments through task execution and generates diverse tasks and goal states. Complementing this, a state-anchor mechanism automatically annotates task-relevant UI elements in successful goal states as reference anchors. During RL training, these reference anchors provide accurate, scalable reward signals that substantially enhance efficiency. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that our framework achieves over 90% accuracy on offline trajectory verification and performs closest to rule-based methods. Furthermore, agents trained using our reward framework exhibit strong performance on both AndroidWorld and our constructed benchmark, establishing a scalable approach for GUI agent training.

Demystifying the Impact of Physical Non-Idealities on Kernel Performance

原文摘要

Physical non-idealities in integrated circuit (IC) design, fabrication, and operation are concealed by conventional hardware abstractions, causing unexpected performance variations in kernels. For large-scale workloads, such as AI training and inference, performance unpredictability can lead to substantial losses. We investigate this problem in NVIDIA H100 GPUs with their distributed shared memory (DSMEM) architectural feature that reduces data movement from the L2 cache to Streaming Multiprocessors (SMs) with multicast loads, and uncover that floorsweeping restricts the number of SMs usable for clustered execution, increasing the number of execution waves of kernels. To alleviate this performance penalty, we introduce the wave-aware clustering strategy that accounts for these resource constraints and improves the throughput of the Hopper version of FlashAttention 4 by up to 5.30% over the unclustered baseline. Furthermore, we discover that the power constraint imposed by the thermal design power (TDP) limit causes the DSMEM-based memory bandwidth optimization to improve the throughput even for compute-bound kernels by creating a power headroom for higher SM frequencies through reduced data movement. Extending this analysis beyond GPUs, we find that power constraints also limit throughput scaling on Tenstorrent's Wormhole accelerator, highlighting the broader importance of accounting for physical non-idealities in kernel performance engineering.

原文摘要

Surgical scene understanding is pivotal for computer-assisted intervention, yet demands compositional reasoning across instruments, anatomy, and workflow. Existing surgical vision-language models rely on instruction tuning with large-scale question-answer pairs, entailing laborious data curation and costly retraining. To bridge this gap, we propose SurgEye, a perception-reasoning framework that grounds reasoning in a vision foundation model without instruction tuning. Specifically, we devise Routed Multi-Task Perception (RMP) that routes the vision foundation model through task-specific pathways learned from public perception labels, producing spatial and temporal evidence. We further introduce Agentic Compositional Reasoning (ACR) that employs a frozen large language model to coordinate RMP specialists and temporal memory as callable tools, composing evidence across tasks and time into grounded answers. Moreover, we construct SurgEye-Bench spanning eight surgical procedures, pairing each question with perception labels for verifiable evaluation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that SurgEye outperforms state-of-the-arts in surgical reasoning. The source code will be available.

FlagRot: Selective Rotation for Low-Bit KV Caches

原文摘要

Long-context inference is bound by the KV cache, which 2-bit codes could shrink about sixfold if their error stays in check. The usual remedy rotates keys before quantizing, assuming rotation always helps. However, we observe that it does not: rotation flattens a spiky piece of a key but can give a flat one a new peak, and both coexist within one key. We therefore propose FlagRot, which stores each 32-channel piece rotated or as is, whichever has the smaller calibrated attention error, and rotates the query instead when reading. We further show that how often to decide follows the quantization axis: per-channel caches such as KIVI need one decision per head, at no write cost, while per-token caches decide per key, with the choice stored in existing sign bits. At 2.5 bits per value, FlagRot lowers the twelve-model KL divergence of KIVI from 18.7 to 12.4 x 10^-3, below RotateKV on 9 of 12 models. Served as a vLLM plugin, it raises RULER at 128k tokens by +2.9 points and the LongBench v1 mean by +0.4 to +1.9 points on the three of four models where 2-bit KIVI loses accuracy. It also lowers the error of 4-bit integer and FP4 caches.

EgoActionBench: Benchmarking Dense Action Captioning for Egocentric Human Videos

原文摘要

Learning from human data offers a scalable path toward embodied intelligence, yet it requires models to accurately understand fine-grained human actions from egocentric observations. However, existing benchmarks remain limited in action atomicity, temporal precision, and hand-action association. We introduce EgoActionBench, a benchmark that represents continuous human manipulation as temporally localized atomic actions associated with the left hand, right hand, or both hands. EgoActionBench contains 1,407 episodes with 41,132 human-refined action annotations. To evaluate such dense predictions, we propose an evaluation protocol that retrieves temporally eligible candidates, selects a prediction by content agreement, and scores semantic fidelity and temporal overlap alongside action precision and recall, jointly capturing what happens, when it happens, and which hand performs it. We benchmark 20 baseline models and systems on EgoActionBench and further adapt two backbones, Qwen3-VL-4B and LLaVA-OneVision-2-8B, through supervised fine-tuning followed by reinforcement learning on automatically annotated training episodes. EgoAction improves EgoActionScore by 15.9 and 23.2 points on the two backbones, and both adapted models outperform all open-source baselines. Our experiments reveal substantial limitations of current models in action atomicity, temporal precision, and hand-action association, highlighting the gap between general video understanding and the action understanding required for embodied intelligence.

原文摘要

GUI web agents require realistic and interactive environments that remain stable during both evaluation and training. Live website evaluation suffers from changing content, access restrictions, and limited coverage of authenticated workflows, while existing synthetic environments for training often lack functional depth and visual fidelity. We propose WebHarbor, a suite of 153 executable and dockerized website environments that faithfully reconstruct the visual interfaces, content, and functional workflows of real-world web services under deterministic control. We build WebHarbor through task-driven human-agent collaboration, where environments evolve as new tasks expand their functional scope, coding agents implement the required changes, and human contributors audit visual fidelity, functional correctness, and task validity. The resulting suite comprises 3,518 tasks spanning multi-step and post-authentication workflows, where existing works often fail to cover. Beyond reliable evaluation, WebHarbor provides high-fidelity synthetic web environments for cost-efficient reinforcement learning (RL). We demonstrate that a Qwen 4B-level GUI agent trained with RL in WebHarbor generalizes to unseen tasks and performs competitively with leading open-source GUI web agents across four benchmarks. The code and data are publicly available at https://github.com/aiming-lab/WebHarbor.

A SPIDER-type stochastic subgradient method for expectation-constrained nonconvex nonsmooth optimization

Wei Liu, Yangyang Xu

原文摘要

Many real-world problems, such as those with fairness constraints, involve complex expectation constraints and large datasets, necessitating the design of efficient stochastic methods to solve them. Most existing research focuses on cases with no {constraint} or easy-to-project constraints or deterministic constraints. In this paper, we consider nonconvex nonsmooth stochastic optimization problems with expectation constraints, for which we build a novel exact penalty model. We first show the relationship between the penalty model and the original problem. Then on solving the penalty problem, we present a single-loop SPIDER-type stochastic subgradient method, which utilizes the subgradients of both the objective and constraint functions, as well as the constraint function value at each iteration. Under certain regularity conditions (weaker than Slater-type constraint qualification or strong feasibility assumed in existing works), we establish an iteration complexity result of $O(ε^{-4})$ to reach a near-$ε$ stationary point of the penalized problem in expectation, matching the lower bound for such tasks. Building on the exact penalization, an $(ε,ε)$-KKT point of the original problem is obtained. For a few scenarios, our complexity of either the {objective} sample subgradient or the constraint sample function values can be lower than the state-of-the-art results by a factor of $ε^{-2}$. Moreover, on solving two fairness-constrained problems and a multi-class Neyman-Pearson classification problem, our method is significantly (up to 466 times) faster than the state-of-the-art algorithms, including switching subgradient method and inexact proximal point methods.

SV-WAM: An Efficient Surround-View World-Action Model for End-to-End Autonomous Driving

原文摘要

World models (WMs) have demonstrated strong potential for end-to-end autonomous driving by learning predictive representations of future scene dynamics. However, generating future videos during inference introduces substantial computational overhead, leading many recent driving WMs to adopt a single front camera as input for efficient deployment. This design restricts spatial coverage in safety-critical maneuvers such as lane changes, merges, and turns. To address this limitation, we propose SV-WAM, a surround-view world-action model (WAM) that preserves full six-camera observations while maintaining efficient inference. SV-WAM leverages future-video prediction as dense training supervision for action learning within a shared generative model, rather than as an inference-time output. At the core of this design is an action-centered causal mask that prevents action tokens from attending to future-video tokens during joint action-video denoising. Consequently, the video branch can be discarded at deployment, enabling efficient action-only planning. Furthermore, we introduce a differentiable drivable-area compliance regularizer that penalizes vehicle-footprint corners approaching or crossing drivable boundaries, improving planning safety and boundary awareness. Extensive experiments on the closed-loop NAVSIMv2 benchmark and the open-loop nuScenes benchmark demonstrate that SV-WAM achieves state-of-the-art planning performance with low inference latency and competitive zero-shot transfer capability.
