MaskSense: Confronting the Visual Exploration Trap in Masked Image Generation

原文摘要

Reinforcement learning (RL) has shown strong potential for aligning generative models with human intent, but adapting RL to masked generative models (MGMs) remains largely underexplored. Existing approaches that directly adapt Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) to MGMs leave a foundational conflict unaddressed: MGMs' exploitative decoding nature is inherently at odds with the exploratory diversity that GRPO presupposes. In this work, we reveal a structural decoding bias termed the visual exploration trap: confidence-based sampling trades the exploration of diverse subject realizations for the greedy resolution of low-uncertainty background regions, causing premature collapse of the generative exploration space and starving GRPO of the rollout diversity it depends on. To this end, we propose MaskSense, a novel RL framework for MGMs that confronts the visual exploration trap at both the sampling and optimization stages. Specifically, we introduce a semantic anchored routing sampling mechanism that leverages semantic priors to preserve high-entropy subject token exploration while amplifying intra-group reward variance through exploratory-exploitative routing to yield more discriminative advantage estimates. Furthermore, we design a global entropy transition anchoring strategy to identify the most consequential decoding steps and concentrate gradient updates on them. Extensive experiments on multiple text-to-image benchmarks demonstrate that MaskSense substantially improves upon the base model, with GenEval accuracy improving from 54% to 86% and HPS from 28.89 to 36.39, achieving state-of-the-art performance.

Sharpness-Aware Muon: Matrix-Aware Optimization with Momentum-Guided Perturbations

Zhiwei Zhai, Wenjing Yan, Ying-Jun Angela Zhang

原文摘要

Muon is a matrix-aware optimizer that combines momentum with orthogonalization to produce structured update directions with strong empirical behavior. However, it only shapes the geometry of the update itself and does not explicitly control neighborhood worst-case loss or bias training toward flat regions, which are often linked to stronger generalization. To address this limitation, we introduce the sharpness-aware formulation of Muon. We first develop \textsc{MuSAM}, which incorporates Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM)-style perturbation into Muon's orthogonalized update and establishes a principled bridge between sharpness-aware training and matrix-aware optimization. We then show that this formulation faces an efficiency--stability tension: constructing the perturbation requires an extra gradient evaluation, while the perturbation itself is generated from a single minibatch gradient and is therefore noisy. To resolve this issue, we propose \textsc{MoMuSAM}, which turns Muon's momentum from an update variable into a sharpness-probing signal. By using normalized momentum as the perturbation direction, \textsc{MoMuSAM} removes the extra clean-gradient computation and replaces the single-batch perturbation proxy with a temporally aggregated one. We prove that both \textsc{MuSAM} and \textsc{MoMuSAM} attain the same asymptotic first-order stationarity order, and further show that \textsc{MoMuSAM} yields a more stable stochastic linearization than \textsc{MuSAM}. Experiments on standard benchmarks demonstrate that sharpness awareness consistently improves Muon.

AnchorSeg: Language Grounded Query Banks for Reasoning Segmentation

原文摘要

Reasoning segmentation requires models to ground complex, implicit textual queries into precise pixel-level masks. Existing approaches rely on a single segmentation token , whose hidden state implicitly encodes both semantic reasoning and spatial localization, limiting the model’s ability to explicitly disentangle what to segment from where to segment. We introduce AnchorSeg, which reformulates reasoning segmentation as a structured conditional generation process over image tokens, conditioned on language grounded query banks. Instead of compressing all semantic reasoning and spatial localization into a single embedding, AnchorSeg constructs an ordered sequence of query banks: latent reasoning tokens that capture intermediate semantic states, and a segmentation anchor token that provides explicit spatial grounding. We model spatial conditioning as a factorized distribution over image tokens, where the anchor query determines localization signals while contextual queries provide semantic modulation. To bridge token-level predictions and pixel-level supervision, we propose Token–Mask Cycle Consistency (TMCC), a bidirectional training objective that enforces alignment across resolutions. By explicitly decoupling spatial grounding from semantic reasoning through structured language grounded query banks, AnchorSeg achieves state-of-the-art results on ReasonSeg test set (67.7% gIoU and 68.1% cIoU). All code and models are publicly available at https://github.com/rui-qian/AnchorSeg.
