Building an Atlas of Social Experiments to Link Studies, Reconcile Conflicts, and Bridge Gaps

Jiawei Zhang, Honglin Bao, Pengda Wang, Alex Yan, Xiao Liu, James A. Evans

Social and behavioral science runs thousands of experiments each year, yet their findings rarely accumulate into a coherent map of what is known, what conflicts, and what remains missing. We introduce EXATLAS, a framework for turning an archive of experiments into an atlas: a structured map in which studies link, conflict, or leave bridgeable gaps. Given a target study, EXATLAS searches for prior studies that are locally close in treatment and outcome space and asks whether their observed effects can be composed to predict the target effect. This yields three cases. If composition succeeds and agrees with the observed result, EXATLAS links the target to consistent prior evidence. If composition succeeds but disagrees, EXATLAS reconciles the conflict and proposes candidate moderators or higher-level theories that could explain it. If the composition fails, EXATLAS proposes bridge experiments to close the gap. We provide an error bound for composition under local smoothness of the treatment-effect surface. On held-out targets certified as locally supported, EXATLAS recovers the direction of the reported causal effect in 98% of cases across two experimental domains, with an average Spearman correlation of rho = 0.770. Human evaluations further suggest that its proposed bridge experiments are plausible and exhibit connectedness, and that its conflict explanations are useful for theory generation. These results suggest that the archive of social experiments contains more latent structure than current practice extracts, and that making this structure explicit can guide both future theory and future experimentation.

We introduce Nemotron 3.5 Super and Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, open and efficient Mixture-of-Experts Hybrid Mamba-Transformer models designed for reasoning, long-context understanding, and agentic workloads. Super is a 120B-parameter, 12B-active multimodal model, while Lightning is a smaller 30B-parameter, 3B-active text model; both designed for efficient deployment. Both models combine large-scale distillation, long-context training, and native speculative decoding, while Super further incorporates Indic continued pretraining and agentic software-engineering mid-training. We develop a comprehensive post-training pipeline spanning supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning (RLVR and RLHF), complemented in Super by specialized teacher training and multi- teacher on-policy distillation (MOPD). This transforms Super from a text-only base model into a multimodal agent capable of reasoning over text, images, video, and interactive tool environments. We further explore test-time scaling through parallel agent execution and self-verification. Across training and deployment, we jointly optimize capability and efficiency. Indic continued pretraining improves Indian-language benchmarks by up to 9.82 percentage points, while agentic mid-training strengthens software-engineering capabilities and robustness across agent harnesses. The post-trained Super model achieves 51.78% on SWE-bench Pro, surpassing Nemotron 3 Ultra despite using approximately 4.6x fewer active parameters. Post-training MTP boosting improves speculative- decoding acceptance length by up to 21.8% under probabilistic draft sampling, while NVFP4 quantization achieves 99.62% median accuracy recovery relative to BF16. Inference optimizations enable up to 4,856 output tokens/s/GPU on GB200 while sustaining at least 50 tokens/s/user.

A Product-Grassmann Tucker Surrogate for Parametric Field Prediction

Melika Baghi, Xiao Liu, Kamran Paynabar

Many-query applications such as design optimization, uncertainty quantification and digital twins call for repeated full-field predictions from expensive partial differential equation (PDE) simulations. Grassmannian reduced-order models interpolate parameter-dependent subspaces but commonly vectorize the spatial field, and the ambient dimension then grows with the product of the grid sizes. Tensor-based models preserve the multiway structure but often use shared mode-wise bases or a fixed core across parameters. We propose a Tucker-based surrogate that keeps the spatial directions and time as separate modes. The factor subspaces are interpolated on a product Grassmann manifold, Procrustes alignment places the Tucker cores in one coordinate system, and a truncated singular value decomposition models their variation. Across five PDE benchmarks in two and three spatial dimensions, including public computational fluid dynamics data, the interpolation size is reduced by factors of 13 to 482 and the stored model by factors of 13 to 464 relative to a single-subspace Grassmannian surrogate with the same local interpolation. Cached queries run 3.3 to 8.5 times faster, the mean errors over ten resampled splits differ by at most 0.22 percentage points (0.36 when every model choice is re-selected inside each split), and the prediction-error terms of the two methods differ by less than 0.1 percentage points. The remaining accuracy differences are consistent with the larger representation error of the Tucker format. In a three-dimensional grid study the interpolation-size ratio rises to 2,260 and the query speedup to 11.9 at 64^3.

Constrained Extreme Gradient Boosting for Parametric Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Subspace Prediction

Melika Baghi, Xiao Liu, Kamran Paynabar

High-fidelity simulations such as computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis are essential for modelling complex engineering systems but remain prohibitively expensive for tasks including parametric studies, optimisation and real-time control. Projection-based reduced-order models (ROMs) alleviate this cost by projecting full-order dynamics onto low-dimensional subspaces. On the other hand, projection-based ROMs can become less robust under parameter variation, and one approach is to adapt the projection basis (that is, the subspace) as the parameters change. We propose constrained extreme gradient boosting (cXGBoost) for predicting the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) basis at given parameter settings. In particular, given the observed parameter-subspace pairs, we map the subspaces from the Grassmann manifold to a Euclidean space. Then, cXGBoost is trained in this Euclidean space with a constraint that the norm of the predicted vectors is bounded to ensure the injectivity of the mapping between the Euclidean space and the Grassmann manifold. On four parametric problems, a cylinder wake, Kolmogorov flow, the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and a forced beam, cXGBoost has lower mean reconstruction errors than existing approaches, namely the projected Gaussian process and Grassmann interpolation.

Human or LLM as Standardized Patients? A Comparative Study in Medical Education

Bingquan Zhang, Xiaoxiao Liu, Yuchi Wang, Zhou Lei freedomai, Qianqian Xie Wuhan University, Benyou Wang The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen

Standardized patients (SPs) are indispensable for clinical skills training but remain expensive and difficult to scale. Although large language model (LLM)-based virtual standardized patients (VSPs) have been proposed as an alternative, their behavior remains unstable and lacks rigorous comparison with human standardized patients. We propose EasyMED, a multi-agent VSP framework that separates case-grounded information disclosure from response generation to support stable, inquiry-conditioned patient behavior. We also introduce SPBench, a human-grounded benchmark with eight expert-defined criteria for interaction-level evaluation. Experiments show that EasyMED more closely matches human SP behavior than existing VSPs, particularly in case consistency and controlled disclosure. A four-week controlled study further demonstrates learning outcomes comparable to human SP training, with stronger early gains for novice learners and improved flexibility, psychological safety, and cost efficiency.

COSMOS: Connectivity-Oriented Submodular Maximization for Optimal Subgraph Retrieval

Boci Peng, Xiao Liu University of Macau and Guangdong Institute of Intelligence Science and Technology, Zhuhai, China, Boren Hu, Yun Zhu Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Xuanbo Fan Peking University, Yanwei Yue Peking University, Chunyu Yang, Yan Zhang Peking University

Retrieving coherent evidence subgraphs is critical for Knowledge Base Question Answering (KBQA). Existing paradigms often treat facts independently, rely on biased heuristics, or employ myopic search, failing to optimize collective subgraph utility. In this paper, we propose COSMOS (Connectivity-Oriented Submodular Maximization for Optimal Subgraph Retrieval), a unified framework that formalizes evidence retrieval as a constrained submodular maximization problem. This formulation mathematically captures the trade-off between information relevance and structural complexity. To tractably solve this combinatorial challenge, COSMOS employs a decompose-and-conquer strategy, which first performs a seed-guided greedy expansion to maximize local semantic utility, followed by a topology-aware component aggregation to bridge disjoint evidence clusters via Maximum Spanning Tree aggregation. Guided by theoretical bounds, we introduce Structure-Aware Contrastive Tuning to align semantic space with KG topology. Experimental results on WebQSP, CWQ, and \text{M}^3\text{GQA} benchmarks demonstrate that COSMOS achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Glyph: Scaling Context Windows via Visual-Text Compression

Jiale Cheng, Yusen Liu, Xinyu Zhang, Yulin Fei The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Wenyi Hong Department of Computer Science and Technology, Tsinghua University, Ruiliang Lyu Zhipu AI, Weihan Wang, Zhe Su 等 14 位作者

Large language models (LLMs) conventionally represent text as sequences of discrete tokens, making long-context scaling largely a matter of processing more tokens more efficiently. We instead explore a complementary direction: increasing how much original context each token represents. To this end, we introduce Glyph, a framework that renders long texts into compact visual pages and processes them with a vision-language model (VLM), allowing a fixed context window to cover substantially more text.To make visual compression practical, Glyph combines continual pre-training on rendered long-text data, an LLM-driven genetic search to identify rendering configurations that balance compression and task performance, and post-training with supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning.Across multiple long-context benchmarks, Glyph achieves 3–4× token compression while maintaining performance comparable to strong text-only LLMs such as Qwen3-8B, with over 4× faster prefilling and decoding and 2× faster supervised fine-tuning.Under more aggressive compression, a VLM with a 128K context window can handle tasks that would otherwise require up to 1M input tokens. Our code and model are released at https://github.com/thu-coai/Glyph.

Too Long, Do Re-weighting for Efficient LLM Reasoning Compression

Zhong-Zhi Li, Xiao Liang, Zihao Tang, Lei Ji, Peijie Wang, Haotian Xu, Xing W, Haizhen Huang 等 14 位作者

Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently achieved remarkable progress on complex reasoning tasks by leveraging extended Chain-of-Thought (CoT) techniques. These reasoning processes can be roughly categorized into System-1 (fast and intuitive) and System-2 (slow and deliberate) paradigms. However, excessive reliance on lengthy System-2-style reasoning during inference can produce extremely long outputs, thereby reducing efficiency. In this work, we propose Thinking Length Data Re-weighting (TLDR), that does not rely on sophisticated data annotations or interpolation between multiple models. We continuously balance the weights between the model’s System-1 and System-2 data to eliminate redundant reasoning processes while preserving the model’s reasoning capability. We validate our method across multiple base models, including Deepseek-R1-Distilled Qwen models, as well as on a diverse benchmarks with varying difficulty levels. Our method significantly reduces the number of output tokens by nearly 40% while maintaining the accuracy of the reasoning.

Route to Rome Attack: Directing LLM Routers to Expensive Models via Adversarial Suffix Optimization

Haochun Tang Hong Kong University of Science and Technology(Guangzhou), Yuliang Yan The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), Jiahua Lu, Huaxiao Liu Jilin University, Enyan Dai HKUST(GZ)

Cost-aware routing dynamically dispatches user queries to models of varying capability to balance performance and inference cost. However, the routing strategy introduces new security concern that adversaries may manipulate router to consistently select expensive high-capability models. Existing routing attacks depend either on white-box access or heuristic prompts, rendering them ineffective in real-world black-box scenarios. In this work, we propose R^2A, which aims to mislead black-box LLM routers to expensive models via adversarial suffix optimization. Specifically, R^2A deploys a hybrid ensemble surrogate router to mimic the black-box router. A suffix optimization algorithm is further adapted for the ensemble-based surrogate. Extensive experiments on multiple open-source and commercial routing systems demonstrate that R^2A significantly increases the routing rate to expensive models on queries of different distributions. KARL: Reinforcement Learning for LLM Agents on Multi-Turn Knowledge-Intensive Agentic Tasks

Xueqiao Sun, Xiao Liu, Bowen Lv, Hanchen Zhang, Bohao Jing, Zehan Qi, Yifan Xu Tsinghua University, Tsinghua University, Yuxiao Dong Tsinghua University 等 9 位作者

Large Language Models have shown remarkable potential as autonomous agents, but their effectiveness in knowledge-intensive tasks remains limited by passive knowledge utilization. We introduce KARL (Knowledge-Augmented Reinforcement Learning), a framework that enables LLM agents to dynamically explore structured knowledge sources through multi-turn interactions. Unlike existing retrieval-augmented approaches, KARL empowers agents to proactively decide when and what knowledge to acquire during task execution. Our framework incorporates online reinforcement learning with curiosity-driven reward shaping, explicitly incentivizing knowledge exploration while optimizing tool-use behaviors end-to-end. Extensive evaluation across six structured knowledge benchmarks demonstrates that KARL achieves state-of-the-art performance, with our Qwen2.5-14B-based agent significantly outperforming GPT-4o, Claude-4, and o4-mini on both knowledge graph and database tasks.Source code is available at https://github.com/THUDM/KARL.

EXCEEDS: Extracting Complex Events via Nugget-based Grid Modeling in Scientific Domain

Yi-Fan Lu, Xian-Ling Mao Beijing Institute of Technology, Bo Wang, Xiao Liu Microsoft Research Asia, Heyan Huang Beijing Institute of Technology

It is crucial to understand a specific domain by events. Extensive event extraction research has been conducted in many domains such as news, finance, and biology. However, event extraction in scientific domain is still insufficiently supported by comprehensive datasets and tailored methods. Compared with other domains, scientific domain has two characteristics: (1) denser nuggets and events, and (2) more complex information forms. To solve the above problem, considering these two characteristics, we first construct SciEvents, a large-scale multi-event document-level dataset with a schema tailored for scientific domain. It consists of 2,508 documents and 24,381 events under multi-stage manual annotation and quality control. Then, we propose EXCEEDS, an end-to-end scientific event extraction framework by encoding dense nuggets into a grid matrix and simplifying complex event extraction as a nugget-based grid modeling task. Experiments on SciEvents demonstrate state-of-the-art performances of EXCEEDS. Both the SciEvents dataset and the EXCEEDS framework are released publicly to facilitate future research.

Data Mixing Agent: Learning to Re-weight Domains for Continual Pre-training

Kailai Yang University of Manchester, Xiao Liu Microsoft Research Asia, Lei Ji, Hao Li, Xiao Liang, Zhiwei Liu, Yeyun Gong, Peng Cheng Microsoft Research 等 9 位作者

Continual pre-training on small-scale task-specific data is an effective method for improving large language models in new target fields, yet it risks catastrophic forgetting of their original capabilities. A common solution is to re-weight training data mixtures from source and target fields on a domain space to achieve balanced performance. Previous domain reweighting strategies rely on manual designation with certain heuristics based on human intuition or empirical results. In this work, we prove that more general heuristics can be parameterized by proposing Data Mixing Agent, the first model-based, end-to-end framework that learns to re-weight domains. The agent learns generalizable heuristics through reinforcement learning on large quantities of data mixing trajectories with corresponding feedback from an evaluation environment. Experiments in continual pre-training on math reasoning show that Data Mixing Agent outperforms strong baselines in achieving balanced performance across source and target field benchmarks. Furthermore, it generalizes well across unseen source fields, target models, and domain spaces without retraining. Direct application to the code generation field also indicates its adaptability across target domains. Further analysis showcases the agents’ well-aligned heuristics with human intuitions and their efficiency in achieving superior model performance with less source-field data.

HarmRLVR: Weaponizing Verifiable Rewards for Harmful LLM Alignment

Yuexiao Liu, Lijun Li Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Xingjun Wang Tsinghua University, Jing Shao Shanghai AI Laboratory

Recent advancements in Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR) have gained significant attention due to their objective and verifiable reward signals, demonstrating strong performance in reasoning and code generation tasks. However, the potential safety risks associated with RLVR remain underexplored. This paper presents HarmRLVR, the first systematic investigation into the alignment reversibility risk of RLVR. We show that safety alignment can be rapidly reversed using GRPO with merely 64 harmful prompts without responses, causing models to readily comply with harmful instructions. Across five models from Llama, Qwen, and DeepSeek, we empirically demonstrate that RLVR-based attacks elevate the average harmfulness score to 4.94 with an attack success rate of 96.01%, significantly outperforming harmful fine-tuning while preserving general capabilities. Our findings reveal that RLVR can be efficiently exploited for harmful alignment, posing serious threats to open-source model safety.

GATE: Graph-based Adaptive Tool Evolution Across Diverse Tasks

Jianwen Luo, Yiming Huang, Jinxiang Meng University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fangyu Lei, Shizhu He Institute of automation, Chinese academy of science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xiao Liu Microsoft Research Asia, Shanshan Jiang, Bin Dong Ricoh Software Research Center Beijing Co., Ltd. 等 10 位作者

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown great promise in tool-making, yet existing frameworks often struggle to efficiently construct reliable toolsets and are limited to single-task settings. To address these challenges, we propose GATE (Graph-based Adaptive Tool Evolution), an adaptive framework that dynamically constructs and evolves a hierarchical graph of reusable tools across multiple scenarios. We evaluate GATE on open-ended tasks (Minecraft), agent-based tasks (TextCraft, DABench), and code generation tasks (MATH, Date, TabMWP). Our results show that GATE achieves up to 4.3× faster milestone completion in Minecraft compared to the previous state-of-the-art method, and provides an average improvement of 9.23% over existing tool-making methods in code generation tasks and 10.03% in agent tasks. Further analysis shows that GATE exhibits strong adaptive evolution capabilities, effectively balancing tool quantity, complexity, and functionality while maintaining high efficiency. Code and data are available at https://github.com/ayanami2003/GATE.
