NORmal: Architecting 3D Ferroelectric NOR Flash as Main Memory -- From Co-Fabricated BEOL Arrays to 200B-Class Multi-Agent LLMs in a Smartphone

Zhuoran Li, Chen Gu, Zhuohang Bian, Haochen Yu, Yibo Zhao, Xuxiao Yang, Zhaori Cong, Jinshan Yue 等 12 位作者

Smartphone agents increasingly work as teams, in which a large planner directs parallel workers across long sessions. Running such a team on the device requires 200B-class models and contexts that exceed phone DRAM many times over, yet existing tiers treat flash as storage: UFS starves per-token weight streaming, and mobile High-Bandwidth Flash (HBF) needs a redesigned SoC and cannot absorb continuous KV writes. We show that a non-volatile memory can join an unmodified LPDDR6 bus as a plain rank only if its access latency fits the DRAM timing window, a condition no NAND tier meets. We present NORmal, to our knowledge the first main-memory architecture for 3D ferroelectric NOR flash. We have fabricated and experimentally characterized back-end-of-line (BEOL) 3D FeNOR arrays that co-integrate dense 3-bit MLC and fast, high-endurance in-place-writable SLC with sub-7.5 ns sensing. NORmal turns these co-fabricated arrays into a byte-addressable, deterministic-timing load/store rank on an unmodified LPDDR6 interface through an under-array DRAM-emulation bridge, staggered bank reads with zero-cycle weight swizzling, and posted SLC writes. Across this rank and DRAM, NORmal places agent state by mutability and lifetime rather than by hotness, serving 200B-class models and persistent planner contexts in place while dynamically partitioning subchannels across agent phases. In serving-level simulation on production agent traces, NORmal is 8.9$\times$--28.0$\times$ faster than UFS offloading, within 0.4% of an unlimited-DRAM ideal, and 2.8$\times$--6.3$\times$ faster than HBF on sessions beyond 256K tokens, with 8.1$\times$--17.8$\times$ less memory energy per token.

Towards Training Transformers as a Universal Computer

Ruize Xu, Chenxiao Yang, Yanhong Li, David McAllester

We demonstrate that a small transformer can learn to execute programs in MicroPy, a simplified yet computationally universal programming language. Given procedure definitions together with an expression to evaluate, the transformer predicts small-step execution using PENCIL scaffolding for space-efficient execution within a bounded context window. After training on randomly generated, semantically arbitrary MicroPy programs, the learned transformer generalizes to held-out human-written programs including bit copying and flipping, binary addition and multiplication, and SAT verification and solving. The trained model exhibits out-of-distribution generalization: it correctly evaluates programs drawn from a substantially different distribution than the one used to generate its training data. Since MicroPy can express any computation, our results provide empirical evidence that a standard transformer can be trained to act as a universal computer when paired with PENCIL scaffolding. PT$^3$: Prototype-Guided Self-Supervised Pretraining for Generalizable mmWave Human Point Cloud Representation

Ziyang Liu, Kieren Yu, Xiao Yang, Xin Yang, Kaishun Wu

Multi-source millimeter-wave (mmWave) observations offer an opportunity to learn human representations reusable across sensing tasks. However, sparse detections and multipath effects make these observations unstable, challenging existing point cloud pretraining methods. We propose PT$^3$, a prototype-guided self-supervised pretraining framework for mmWave human point clouds. PT$^3$ represents local states in spatial regions as sparse compositions of shared prototypes and learns their temporal evolution through autoregressive prediction. Observation consistency further stabilizes representations under radar perturbations. After pretraining on unlabeled sequences from multiple sources, the same frozen encoder supports action classification, dense point generation, joint pose estimation, and future motion prediction on datasets not used for pretraining. Across these tasks, PT$^3$ outperforms the compared pretraining baselines and achieves competitive or superior performance to task-specific models.

TCC-RAG: Temporal Causal Chain-Guided RAG for Temporal Knowledge Graph Question Answering

Xinxun Zhang, Yuxiang Wang, Shanshan Feng, Jun Zhang, Tieyun Qian, Binhang Yuan, Kai Yin, Xiao Yan 等 9 位作者

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) have spurred growing interest in temporal knowledge graph question answering (TKGQA). Most existing methods rely on semantic retrieval augmented generation (RAG), which suffers from fundamental limitations in complex temporal reasoning. On the one hand, semantic-based RAG methods struggle to capture the multi-hop causal knowledge required for complex temporal reasoning. On the other hand, these methods introduce excessive redundant knowledge, trapping LLMs in spurious reasoning chains that potentially result in erroneous answers. To address these problems, we propose a Temporal Causal Chain-guided RAG (TCC-RAG) to retrieve a concise yet sufficient set of causal knowledge to support complex temporal reasoning. Specifically, we reformulate the temporal knowledge graph into a multi-view causal cue graph, with causal cues inducing connections that explicitly encode temporal evolution and causal dynamics. Based on the causal cue graph, we construct a query-specific temporal causal chain to guide the retrieval process, enabling the model to focus on a concise set of causally relevant knowledge. Finally, we introduce a causal evidence filter to refine the retrieved knowledge, ensuring its causal consistency with the underlying temporal logic of the query. Experiments show that TCC-RAG achieves substantial performance gains of 10.72% and 8.40% on two TKGQA benchmarks, and delivers a remarkable 62.97% improvement for multi-step temporal reasoning.

Rethinking Positional Encoding and Interaction Granularity for CTR Prediction

Xinxun Zhang, Yuxiang Wang, Xiaokai Zhou, Jiayue Li, Yi Li, Yue Liu, Jun Zhang, Xiaoling Zhou 等 11 位作者

Click-through rate (CTR) prediction relies on historical behaviors and contextual features to estimate clicks on a target item. Existing Transformer-based CTR models often adopt index-based or temporal positional encodings and token-level causal interaction. However, we observe that most existing positional encodings do not outperform NoPE, while relaxing causal constraints within target-relative temporal groups also yields gains. These observations motivate a fundamental question: what positional encoding and interaction granularity does CTR prediction actually require? To address this question, we propose \textbf{TRIP}, which combines target-aware rank--time positional encoding with temporal-group interaction modeling. Specifically, Factorized Rank Encoding represents each behavior's ordinal position within the historical sequence through a low-rank factorization, while Target-Relative Time Encoding characterizes its temporal distance to the target on a coarse-to-fine scale. This joint design grounds each behavior's positional representation in its sequence context and temporal relation to the current target. Furthermore, Temporal Group-Causal Interaction enriches intra-group representations through bidirectional interaction and masked reconstruction while preserving inter-group causal order. Finally, behavior representations are condensed into compact group summaries for efficient group-level modeling in subsequent layers. Experiments on four public benchmarks show that TRIP improves AUC by up to 4.45\% relative to the strongest baseline.

Enhanced Reasoning for Biomedical Document-Level Relation Extraction via a Novel Cascade Language Model Framework

Haohua Song, Wenhao Gu PromptBio, Zhijing Li, Yunwenyu, Tiantian Zhu Shenzhen University, Xiao Yang PromptBio Inc, Zexuan Zhu

Biomedical document-level relation extraction poses significant challenges beyond sentence-level tasks, as it necessitates the integration of evidence from entire documents and the ability for coherent cross-sentence reasoning. While pretrained language models (PLMs) demonstrate efficiency in handling local contexts, they often struggle with global dependency modeling. Conversely, large language models (LLMs) exhibit strong reasoning capabilities but tend to generate hallucinations in knowledge-intensive biomedical domains. This paper introduces CoRE, a novel cascade framework that leverages the complementary strengths of PLMs and LLMs through a detect-then-rethink paradigm. The PLM serves as an efficient detector for high-confidence relations, while challenging cases are forwarded to an LLM enhanced with semantic retrieval and iterative reasoning mechanisms. Experimental results on BioRED and CDR datasets show that CoRE achieves substantial improvements over state-of-the-art baselines, validating the effectiveness of the proposed cascade paradigm for complex biomedical relation extraction.

AdaMix: Adaptive Mixing for Short and Long Reasoning Adapters

Hao Luo Wuhan University, Xiao Yan Wuhan University, Xinyan Li, Qiming Zeng Wuhan University, Yuhao Lin, Shanshan Feng Wuhan University and The Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Hao Wang Wuhan University, Jiawei Jiang Wuhan University

Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) have achieved remarkable success on complex tasks by generating detailed Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning. However, they tend to apply a uniform, computation-intensive deep reasoning strategy to all problems, leading to unnecessary overhead on simple tasks. This significantly hinders their efficiency in real-world applications. While existing methods have improved reasoning efficiency to some extent, they still face critical challenges such as conflicting objectives, limited adaptability. To address these limitations, we propose AdaMix, an adaptive reasoning framework via decoupled optimization. To mitigate optimization conflicts, AdaMix first constructs two specialized adapters: an efficiency-oriented short adapter and an accuracy-oriented long adapter. It then incorporates a difficulty-aware routing model that assesses problem complexity to predict a reasoning intensity coefficient. This coefficient is used to dynamically interpolate a mixed adapter from the two base adapters, enabling fine-grained reasoning control. Our experiment demonstrates that our AdaMix reduces the average response length of DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-7B by 54.9% while improving accuracy by up to 4.8% on five mathematical datasets, thus indicating a favorable accuracy-efficiency trade-off.

LASA: Language-Agnostic Semantic Alignment at the Semantic Bottleneck for LLM Safety

Junxiao Yang, Haoran Liu, Jinzhe Tu, Jiale Cheng, Zhexin Zhang, Shiyao Cui, Jiaqi Weng, Jialing Tao Alibaba Group 等 12 位作者

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated better safety performance in high-resource languages than in low-resource languages. We attribute this issue as a mismatch gap between language-agnostic semantic understanding ability and language dominant safety alignment biased toward high-resource languages. Based on above insights, we empirically identify the semantic bottleneck in LLMs: intermediate layers in which the geometry of model representations is governed primarily by shared semantic content rather than language identity. Then, we propose Language-Agnostic Semantic Alignment (LASA), which anchors safety alignment directly in semantic bottlenecks. Experiments show that LASA substantially improves safety across all languages: average attack success rate (ASR) drops from 24.7% to 2.8% on LLaMA-3.1-8B-Instruct and remains within 3–4% across Qwen2.5 and Qwen3 Instruct models (7B–32B). Besides, our analysis and method offer a representation-level perspective on LLM safety, suggesting that safety alignment requires anchoring safety understanding not in surface text, but in the model’s language-agnostic semantic space.

Diffusion-CAM: Faithful Visual Explanations for dMLLMs

Haomin Zuo, Yidi Li, Luoxiao Yang Xi'an University of Technology, Xiaofeng Zhang

While diffusion Multimodal Large Language Models (dMLLMs) have recently achieved remarkable strides in multimodal generation, the development of interpretability mechanisms has lagged behind their architectural evolution. Unlike traditional autoregressive models that produce sequential activations, diffusion-based architectures generate tokens via parallel denoising, resulting in smooth, distributed activation patterns across the entire sequence. Consequently, existing Class Activation Mapping (CAM) methods, which are tailored for local, sequential dependencies, are ill-suited for interpreting these non-autoregressive behaviors. To bridge this gap, we propose Diffusion-CAM, the first interpretability method specifically tailored for dMLLMs. We derive raw activation maps by differentiably probing intermediate representations in the transformer backbone, accordingly capturing both latent features and their class-specific gradients. To address the inherent stochasticity of these raw signals, we incorporate four key modules to resolve spatial ambiguity and mitigate intra-image confounders and redundant token correlations. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Diffusion-CAM significantly outperforms SoTA methods in both localization accuracy and visual fidelity, establishing a new standard for understanding the parallel generation process of diffusion multimodal systems.

How Should We Enhance the Safety of Large Reasoning Models: An Empirical Study

Zhexin Zhang, Xian Qi Loye, Victor Shea-Jay Huang, Junxiao Yang, Qi Zhu Huawei Technologies Ltd., Shiyao Cui, Fei Mi, Lifeng Shang Huawei Technologies Ltd. 等 11 位作者

Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) have achieved remarkable success on reasoning-intensive tasks such as mathematics and programming. However, their enhanced reasoning capabilities do not necessarily translate to improved safety performance—and in some cases, may even degrade it. This raises an important research question: how should we enhance the safety of LRMs? In this paper, we present a comprehensive empirical study on how to enhance the safety of LRMs through Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT). Our investigation begins with an unexpected observation: directly distilling safe responses from DeepSeek-R1 fails to significantly enhance safety. We analyze this phenomenon and identify five key risky patterns that contribute to it. We then demonstrate that explicitly addressing these issues during the data distillation process can lead to substantial safety improvements. Next, we explore whether a long and complex reasoning process is necessary for achieving safety. Interestingly, we find that simply using short or template-based reasoning process can attain comparable safety performance. These findings prompt a deeper reflection on the role of reasoning in ensuring safety. Finally, we conduct a comprehensive ablation study to reveal the impact of different training configurations. Overall, we hope our empirical study could provide a more holistic picture on enhancing the safety of LRMs.
