Large Language Models for Forecasting of Electricity Price Spikes

Liang Lin, Jianguo Zhu, Gang Lei, Allen Wang, Xin Lu

Can market notices read by a large language model (LLM) improve short-horizon electricity price spike forecasts? We study five regions of Australia's National Electricity Market. A local LLM extracted features once per notice, only notices visible at the forecast origin were used, and a gradient-boosting model produced onset probabilities. In an out-of-sample development back-test (July 2022 to July 2024), notice features did not lower the 60-minute Brier score of a numeric model including the market operator's next-hour forecasts. At 24 hours they did, but rule-based features did so almost equally and attribution to notice content was not established. A locally frozen protocol, not publicly deposited, governed a retrospective single-use holdout from 15 August to 17 October 2026. At 60 minutes, the hypothesis that LLM features lower the numeric model's Brier score was not established (H1; relative Brier skill -0.09%), so the planned comparison with rule-based features was not tested (H2). At 24 hours, the hypothesis that LLM features lower the score against a text-free control was not established (H3; +0.37%, 95% CI [-9.74, 1.39], inconclusive). By the frozen wording rule the non-significant 24-hour improvement comes mainly from recalibration and cannot be attributed to notice content, although post hoc the decomposition could not separate recalibration from resolution. The 24-hour base rate was 1.56% on the holdout against 14.0% in development. With 5 onsets on 3 days and 24-hour positives in 2 of 22 three-day blocks, the holdout neither established nor excluded a 24-hour effect.

OmniOPD: Stable On-Policy Distillation for Joint Audio-Video Generation

Zihao Fan, Xin Lu, Jie Huang, Hexin Zhang, Xueyang Fu, Zheng-Jun Zha

Reinforcement learning (RL) elevates joint audio-video generation, but optimizing heterogeneous, modality-specific audio and video rewards often introduces cross-modal interference. On-policy distillation (OPD) alleviates this issue by transferring the capabilities of specialized audio and video RL teachers into a single student model. However, a significant imbalance in cross-modal token counts leaves audio with sparse supervision, causing unstable distillation. We observe that naively increasing the audio loss weight fails to solve this problem since audio learning relies heavily on visual context, indicating richer visual cues are crucial to offset sparse audio signals. To address this, we propose OmniOPD, a modality-wise on-policy distillation framework designed for balanced and stable audio-video generation. First, we construct privileged visual information using asymmetric noise scheduling, allowing the audio teacher to generate more informative targets from cleaner video context. Second, we introduce grouped multi-noise sampling to expand audio supervision coverage and stabilize training. Third, we introduce timestep-wise importance weighting based on teacher-student transition divergence, preserving reliable supervision while down-weighting unreliable learning signals, to stabilize fluctuations in audio learning. Evaluated on JavisBench and VBench demonstrate OmniOPD preserves audio quality while significantly enhancing video generation, achieving effective joint distillation.

Does reflective LLM feedback survive a wet-lab-scale label budget?

Haoxuan Zeng, Xin Luo

Can reflective language-model feedback improve a biological predictor when each cycle buys only one plate of labels? We separate three possible sources of benefit: proposing model edits, choosing measurements, and revising decisions through repeated feedback. We replay $36$ ProteinGym assays, starting with $96$ labels and acquiring $96$ per round for six rounds, with a sealed test set and a shared edit schema. The pre-specified comparison of full LLM control against random edits detects no advantage in test rank correlation ($Δz=-0.008$, $95\%$ CI $[-0.034,+0.018]$); equivalence is also unestablished. Exploratory ablations nevertheless identify useful model editing. With random acquisition fixed, LLM edits improve Fisher-transformed test Spearman by $0.043$ over no edits; with acquisition fixed to upper confidence bound, they improve normalized top-variant recovery by $0.023$. LLM acquisition alone does not detectably outperform fixed adaptive rules, and repeated feedback does not detectably outperform one initial recommendation under full control. Thus, the observed gains support constrained specialist editing, while the incremental value of recursive reflection remains unestablished at this label budget.

AI for Science in Space: Orbital Laboratories, Planetary Fieldwork, and Embodied Autonomy

Zizhe Wang, Jia Deng, Xin Lu, Zehao Jia, Yi Huang, Yao Zhu, Jianing Li

Artificial intelligence for science (AI4S) is extending from interpretation of existing data to the design and execution of experiments. Space offers distinctive scientific opportunities while restricting physical support. Microgravity and extraterrestrial environments expose phenomena that terrestrial experiments cannot fully reproduce; finite samples, constrained resources, and limited opportunities for intervention complicate sustained investigation. This critical review examines orbital laboratories and planetary in situ science across biology, materials, fluid and thermal physics, and adaptive exploration. We distinguish learning from space-derived data, selecting scientific actions, executing them, and preserving experimental validity. Terrestrial self-driving laboratories provide complementary evidence on optimization, dedicated automation, robotic manipulation, and the support needed for unattended operation. The synthesis connects scientific gains already demonstrated by bounded AI systems to gaps in observation, executable actions, and continuity of valid evidence. Space robots can expand the attainable scope of autonomous science when necessary interventions exceed validated instrument capabilities and timely human support is unavailable. Their value must be established against dedicated mechanisms, redundancy, and human-supported operation. We develop a framework connecting sample history, scientific decisions, physical execution, and claim-specific validity. A worked orbital design, a planetary extension, and matched evaluation schemes separate the contributions of sensing, decision policies, and physical actions. The resulting agenda measures autonomy through valid scientific return, task coverage, intervention costs, and evidence integrity across complete campaigns.

离散视觉Token能否作为视觉信号的语义无损表示?

Can Discrete Tokens Serve as Semantically Lossless Representations of Visual Signals?

Discrete visual tokens represent vision in a discrete form analogous to language, offering a native interface for multimodal modeling under a shared next-token prediction objective. However, quantization error is widely assumed to cause unavoidable semantic loss, fundamentally limiting the semantic fidelity of discrete visual tokens and positioning continuous visual representations as an intrinsic upper bound. Using multimodal understanding as a proxy for semantic fidelity, we revisit this assumption and find quantization error unreliable, as discrete representations with substantially larger errors can achieve better understanding. Instead, the effective bit budget of discrete indices emerges as a key determinant of downstream performance. However, existing quantizers eventually saturate as additional codebooks contribute progressively less semantic information. As one approach to alleviating this saturation, we introduce Factorized Vector Quantization, which quantizes complementary, fixed-dimensional views of the visual feature with symmetric parallel codebooks. It continues to improve at larger bit budgets, ultimately matching continuous visual representations in multimodal understanding. Trained on industrial-scale multimodal data, our model achieves state-of-the-art performance among discrete-representation models, outperforming UniAR and Emu3-Chat by 22.8% and 59.2%, respectively, on a nine-metric average. To our knowledge, it is also the first discrete-representation model competitive with strong continuous-representation models such as Qwen3-VL, including on fine-grained OCR tasks. We further identify the key principles and a practical recipe enabling this competitiveness. These results and insights support the potential of discrete visual representations to underpin large-scale native multimodal foundation models. OneEEG: A Unified Signal-Visual Multimodal Language Model with Task-Aware Mixture of Projectors for Multi-Task EEG Understanding

Jiacheng Zhang, Xueyi Zhang, Xin Lu, Siqi Cai, Haizhou Li

Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used in clinical assessment, brain-computer interfaces, and cognitive-state analysis, yet EEG modeling remains fragmented across task paradigms. Recent multimodal large language models (MLLMs) provide a promising interface for flexible multimodal reasoning, but their ability to understand EEG inputs remains limited. In this work, we propose OneEEG, a unified EEG-MLLM framework for multi-task EEG understanding. By training on our curated OneEEG-Instruct, a multi-task EEG instruction-tuning dataset, OneEEG jointly models numerical EEG representations and visual EEG representations, and introduces a task-aware Mixture of Projectors (MoP) to align heterogeneous EEG features across different task families with the LLM embedding space. We further establish OneEEG-Bench, a benchmark for evaluating current MLLMs and our method on multi-task EEG understanding. Experiments show that existing MLLMs have limited ability to interpret EEG inputs, while OneEEG achieves stronger performance by integrating numerical and visual EEG representations with task-aware EEG-to-LLM projection. Extensive ablations and analyses further reveal the effects of visual EEG renderings, MoP variants, router behavior, and feature dispersion across EEG tasks.

MJev-Spatial: System One Spatial Intelligence via Native Attention Matching

Luozheng Qin, Yuhan Zhu, Changhai Zhou, Qian Qiao, Jun Gao, Yuhua Zhou, Harry Zhang, Xiangyu Zeng 等 13 位作者

Spatial intelligence lets an agent perceive and act in the physical world, and many of its judgments must be made at interaction rates: which spatial relation holds, how far an object is, or where to place it. Vision-language models (VLMs) produce these answers by free-form text generation, paying for autoregressive decoding and answer parsing even though the output space is compact: one of a few options, a scalar, or a 2D point. In light of this, we introduce MJev-Spatial, a System 1 multimodal decision model that tackles all three types of spatial understanding tasks within a unified classification framework. Specifically, MJev-Spatial treats each candidate as a class and scores it using the backbone's pretrained query and key projections, without adding parameters. The candidates are the given options for choice tasks, or value bins and image regions refined through coarse-to-fine classification for numerical and point prediction, respectively. At inference, each classification decision takes a single forward pass and generates no answer tokens. To train on heterogeneous spatial data efficiently, we supervise all coarse-to-fine stages jointly with teacher forcing in one forward pass, and combine this with length-aware global batching and cross-GPU load balancing, raising training throughput by 30.8% over the original batching strategy. Built on Qwen3.5-4B and trained on 12.3M question-answer pairs converted from existing spatial datasets, MJev-Spatial achieves the highest overall score (65.64%) among eight tested models, ranks first on seven of twelve benchmarks, and outperforms its unmodified autoregressive base model on all twelve, while running 2.5 times faster than the fastest autoregressive baseline and 5.6 times faster than the base model.

Revealing Procedural Reasoning Structures in Chain-of-Thought Training via Span-Level Gradient Organization

Garibaldi The University of Nottingham Ningbo China and University of Nottingham, Xiao-Kun Wu Renmin University of China, Yixue Hao, Min Chen South China University of Technology and Pazhou Laboratory

Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting enables large language models to produce multi-step reasoning, yet how such reasoning-related structure is expressed during training remains poorly understood. We present Gradient-based Structural Developer (GSD), an unsupervised framework with a principled gradient aggregation view that tracks span-level gradient during fine-tuning on reasoning benchmarks to understand how models develop structured, step-by-step reasoning capabilities. Our analysis shows that while gradients at the level of individual tokens are often noisy, aggregating gradients over contiguous reasoning-related spans reveals stable and recurring directional alignment across samples. We refer to these directionally aligned patterns as aligned sequential stresses, reflecting consistent gradient organization associated with similar reasoning procedures. Beyond capturing semantically similar reasoning instances, such gradient alignment also reveals structurally similar but semantically diverse cases that share common procedural organization. These findings position GSD as a diagnostic framework for analyzing how procedural reasoning structures emerge during training, with downstream selection results serving as auxiliary evidence correlating gradient alignment with adaptation efficiency.

LLMSurgeon: Diagnosing Data Mixture of Large Language Models

Yaxin Luo Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Jiacheng Cui, Xiaohan Zhao, Xinyi Shang, Jiacheng Liu Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Xinyue Bi, Zhaoyi Li, Zhiqiang Shen Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence

The pretraining data mixture of Large Language Models (LLMs) constitutes their “digital DNA”, shaping model behaviors, capabilities, and failure modes. Yet this composition is rarely disclosed, making post-hoc auditing of data combination or provenance difficult. In this work, we formalize \textbf{Data Mixture Surgery (DMS)}: given only generated text from a target LLM, estimate the domain-level distribution of its pretraining corpus under a predefined taxonomy. We propose \textbf{LLMSurgeon}, a strong framework that casts DMS as an inverse problem under the label-shift assumption. Rather than directly aggregating classifier outputs, LLMSurgeon estimates a calibrated \textit{soft} confusion matrix and solves a constrained inverse problem to correct systematic domain confusion and recover the latent mixture prior. To evaluate, we introduce \textbf{LLMScan}, a recipe-verifiable evaluation suite built from open-source LLMs with transparent pretraining mixtures. Across LLMScan, LLMSurgeon recovers domain mixtures with high fidelity under fixed protocols. Our work presents a practical, post-hoc approach for auditing the \textit{digital DNA} of foundation models without access to their training data. Code is available at: https://github.com/Yaxin9Luo/LLMSurgeon.
