WayPOP: A Panoramic Open-Set Panoptic Tracking Benchmark

Rohit Mohan, Maximilian Luz, Swarnava Chowdhury, Yao Lu, Florian Drews, Thomas Nürnberg, Yakov Miron, Federico Tombari 等 10 位作者

Holistic perception for autonomous agents requires reliably segmenting and associating scene elements across time and camera views, including objects outside a fixed semantic taxonomy. Existing open-set panoptic benchmarks focus on individual images or views, while panoramic tracking benchmarks assume closed-set taxonomies. Consequently, these benchmarks do not evaluate whether unknown objects can be consistently segmented and tracked across synchronized multi-camera sequences. We introduce WayPOP, a panoramic open-set panoptic tracking benchmark built on real Waymo PVPS sequences augmented with diverse out-of-taxonomy 3D assets from Objaverse. Inserted objects are placed at fixed locations in the 3D scene and rendered using calibrated vehicle-mounted cameras as the ego vehicle and surrounding traffic move, providing temporally and cross-view consistent panoptic annotations and auxiliary LiDAR range observations. WayPOP contains approximately 670 curated assets instantiated as 980 unique unknown-object tracks, yielding 53,452 unknown-object mask annotations across 21,300 camera images. Our evaluation protocol defines a hierarchy of tasks from view-independent open-set panoptic segmentation to full panoramic open-set panoptic tracking, using known/unknown PQ and (w)STQ metrics. We benchmark representative open-set and open-vocabulary segmentation methods with temporal and cross-camera association. Our results reveal substantial limitations of current methods in truly open-set scenarios, highlighting robust unknown-object localization and identity association across time and views as major open challenges.

Calibrated Multiaccuracy: Deterministic and Randomized Sample Complexity

Jiuyao Lu, Georgy Noarov, Aaron Roth

Calibrated multiaccuracy asks that a predictor be globally calibrated and multiaccurate with respect to a bounded test family $G$; that is, its residuals should be uncorrelated with every test $g(x)\in G$. This weakening of multicalibration suffices for many applications. Its sample complexity was not known to improve on that of full multicalibration, which is $\widetildeΘ\left(\frac{\log|G|}{\varepsilon^2} + \frac{1}{\varepsilon^{3}}\right)$ when $|G|$ is at least a sufficiently large power of $\log(1/\varepsilon)$. We resolve the sample complexity of $\varepsilon$-calibrated multiaccuracy, showing that it scales as $$ \widetildeΘ\left(\frac{\log|G|}{\varepsilon^2} + \frac{1}{\varepsilon^{5/2}}\right), $$ separating it from the complexity of multicalibration. The upper bound is obtained by an algorithm that outputs a randomized predictor. For deterministic predictors, we establish the tight rate $$ \widetildeΘ\left( \frac{\log|G|}{\varepsilon^2} + \frac{(\log|G|)^{1/3}}{\varepsilon^{8/3}} \right) $$ whenever $\log|G|=Ω(\log(1/\varepsilon))$. When $\log|G|\le\varepsilon^{-1+κ}$ for any fixed $κ\in(0,1)$, this rate is polynomially larger than the rate for randomized predictors. Thus, unlike for multicalibration, calibrated multiaccuracy exhibits a genuine sample-complexity separation between deterministic and randomized predictors. The matching upper and lower bounds show that the unusual cube-root dependence on $\log|G|$ is intrinsic. At $\log|G|\asymp\varepsilon^{-1}$, the minimax rates for randomized and deterministic calibrated multiaccuracy both coincide with the minimax rate for multicalibration.

What Improves During Pretraining? Tracking Knowledge Acquisition with Point-in-Time Models

Chang Su, Bin Wu, Emine Yilmaz, Yao Lu

Language models pretrained on web corpora collected over multiple years learn both general and domain-specific knowledge. How these different kinds of knowledge are learned as pretraining progresses remains unclear. Recent point-in-time models trained on web snapshots from different years provide a way to probe how knowledge prevalence varies over time. Using these models, we propose a temporal variability score (TVS), defined as the coefficient of variation of an item's negative log-likelihood across models. A higher score suggests that the knowledge may be less consistently represented across years of web text. We evaluate six benchmarks covering diverse topics using six models from multiple open-source model families. We find that low- and high-TVS items are learned similarly early in training, but high-TVS items improve faster later on. At the end of the pretraining run, high-TVS items outperform low-TVS items in 34 of 36 model-benchmark settings, with an average advantage of 7.3 points of chance-normalized accuracy. This pattern is most robust on knowledge-intensive tasks, even when comparing items of similar difficulty. Our findings reveal differences in how knowledge is learned over the course of pretraining, with temporal variability providing a diagnostic of these learning dynamics beyond aggregate benchmark scores.

Why Supervised Fine-Tuning Fails to Learn: A Systematic Study of Incomplete Learning in Large Language Models

Chao Xue, Yao Wang, Mengqiao Liu, Di Liang, Xingsheng Han, Peiyang Liu, Xianjie Wu Beijing Information Science & Technology University, Chenyao Lu Tencent AI Lab 等 14 位作者

Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) is the standard approach for adapting large language models (LLMs) to downstream tasks. However, we observe a persistent failure mode: even after convergence, models often fail to correctly reproduce a subset of their own supervised training data. We refer to this behavior as the Incomplete Learning Phenomenon (ILP). This paper presents the first systematic study of ILP in LLM fine-tuning. We formalize ILP as post-training failure to internalize supervised instances and demonstrate its prevalence across multiple model families, domains, and datasets. Through controlled analyses, we identify five recurrent sources of incomplete learning: (1) missing prerequisite knowledge in the pre-trained model, (2) conflicts between SFT supervision and pre-training knowledge, (3) internal inconsistencies within SFT data, (4) left-side forgetting during sequential fine-tuning, and (5) insufficient optimization for rare or complex patterns. We introduce a diagnostic-first framework that maps unlearned samples to these causes using observable training and inference signals, and study several targeted mitigation strategies as causal interventions. Experiments on Qwen, LLaMA, and OLMo2 show that incomplete learning is widespread and heterogeneous, and that improvements in aggregate metrics can mask persistent unlearned subsets. The findings highlight the need for fine-grained diagnosis of what supervised fine-tuning fails to learn, and why.

The Role of Mixed-Language Documents for Multilingual Large Language Model Pretraining

Jiandong Shao, Raphael Tang Microsoft and University College London, University of London, Crystina Zhang, Karin Sevegnani NVIDIA, Pontus Stenetorp University College London, Jianfei Yang, Yao Lu University College London

Multilingual large language models achieve impressive cross-lingual performance despite largely monolingual pretraining. While bilingual data in pretraining corpora is widely believed to enable these abilities, details of its contributions remain unclear. We investigate this question by pretraining models from scratch under controlled conditions, comparing the standard web corpus with a monolingual-only version that removes all multilingual documents. Despite constituting only 2% of the corpus, removing bilingual data causes translation performance to drop 56% in BLEU, while behaviour on cross-lingual QA and general reasoning tasks remains stable, with training curves largely overlapping the baseline. To understand this asymmetry, we categorize bilingual data into parallel (14%), code-switching (72%), and miscellaneous documents (14%) based on the semantic relevance of content in different languages. We then conduct granular ablations by reintroducing parallel or code-switching data into the monolingual-only corpus. Our experiments reveal that parallel data almost fully restores translation performance (91% of the unfiltered baseline), whereas code-switching contributes minimally. Other cross-lingual tasks remain largely unaffected by either type. These findings reveal that translation critically depends on systematic token-level alignments from parallel data, whereas cross-lingual understanding and reasoning appear to be achievable even without bilingual data.
