Stable Voting Rules on the Edge of Optimal Metric Distortion

Ziyi Cai, Fabian Frank, Jabari Hastings, Prasanna Ramakrishnan, Kangning Wang, Qilin Ye

We prove the existence of a randomized voting rule with metric distortion at most $2.1248$, within $0.013$ of the lower bound of $2.11264$. Our rule comes from a generalization of \emph{stable $k$-lotteries} developed in the context of committee selection. In contrast to prior work, our rule samples from a single distribution derived from a zero-sum game, without mixing between voting rules. Our result also gives sharp distortion bounds for stable $k$-lotteries. In particular we show that stable $2$-lotteries have distortion $7/3$, despite only relying on aggregate preferences over triples of candidates, and that stable $2$-lotteries are optimal in this class of voting rules.

Dense Language Generation Made Simple: Deterministic, Randomized, and Multi-Order Algorithms

Ziyi Cai, Shuangping Li, Yiheng Shen, Kangning Wang, Peng Zhang

Language generation in the limit is a theoretical framework for studying how a generator can learn to produce new valid strings from a stream of positive examples. In this model, an adversary chooses an unknown language from a countable family and enumerates its elements in an arbitrary order, while the generator must eventually output only elements of the language that have not yet appeared in the enumeration. Reliable generation is thus formalized through two eventual guarantees: validity and novelty relative to the observed data. To further quantify the breadth of the generator's outputs, Kleinberg and Wei (FOCS 2025, STOC 2026) introduced lower density as a measure of output coverage. Given an order representing the importance or relevance of possible outputs, lower density is the asymptotic lower bound, as $n$ grows, on the fraction of the first $n$ elements of the target language that the generator outputs before they appear in the data. Kleinberg and Wei showed that $1/2$ is the optimal lower-density guarantee for deterministic algorithms. We develop a simple and unified framework for obtaining optimal lower-density guarantees. We first give a deterministic algorithm that recovers the optimal guarantee of $1/2$ with a significantly simpler analysis than prior work. We then demonstrate the flexibility of our framework through two extensions. First, against an oblivious adversary, randomization raises the optimal guarantee to $1-1/e$. Second, for any finite collection of orders, the optimal deterministic and randomized guarantees can be achieved simultaneously with respect to every order, so accommodating multiple notions of importance or relevance entails no loss in the optimal guarantee.

Fast mixing of the SYK model at high temperatures

Yiyi Cai, Yongtao Zhan, Alexander Zlokapa

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a strongly interacting fermionic system. Its dynamics are difficult to analyze with Lieb-Robinson bounds and cluster expansions due to its all-to-all disordered interactions. We prove that, with high probability over the disorder, the SYK model admits a quantum Gibbs sampler with a system-size-independent spectral gap at sufficiently high constant temperatures. This yields polynomial-time preparation of SYK Gibbs states on a quantum computer. While prior non-rigorous computations that suggested SYK thermalization were limited to studying local correlators, we emphasize that our result holds up to arbitrary inverse polynomial trace distance. Our proof introduces the pseudo-Lindbladian approach to fermions then applies two key new ideas: a Bochner inequality for quantum dynamics, and an especially simple SYK analysis based on a comparison to classical dynamics.

Lab2Sim: Turning Real-World Experiment Videos into Interactive Virtual Experiments

Xusen Hei, Jiali Chen, Jinyu Yang, Yi Cai

Science experiment videos demonstrate how experiments are performed, but offer no direct interaction for learners. Turning them into virtual experiments requires not only reproducing the observed apparatus and state changes, but also enforcing the preconditions governing each operation. We introduce Lab2Sim, a benchmark of 218 science experiment videos with evidence-grounded specifications and 11,881 rubric items. To address this task, we propose EduVideo2Code, which extracts experimental procedures hierarchically, encodes them as explicit state machines to guide code generation, and refines the resulting pages through execution-based verification. Experiments show that existing multimodal models readily generate runnable pages but struggle to faithfully reconstruct experimental apparatus. EduVideo2Code consistently improves all four evaluation dimensions across two backbone models, with apparatus fidelity gains of 24.15 points.

Entrywise Logarithmic Matrix Algebra and Dichotomy of Planar Graph Homomorphisms

Jin-Yi Cai, Zhuxiao Tang

We prove a complexity classification of counting planar graph homomorphisms with non-negative weights. For a real symmetric matrix $M$ with nonnegative entries, the problem $\GH(M)$ is either (1) P-time computable over all graphs, or (2) \#P-hard in general but P-time computable over planar graphs, or (3) \#P-hard over planar graphs. Furthermore, $\GH(M)$ in (2) consists of precisely those that involve the P-time FKT algorithm to count planar perfect matchings with a holographic transformation. The dichotomy for entrywise positive and full rank matrices lies at the core of the proof. In this setting, the main tool is a matrix algebra ${A}$ (a vector space with bilinear multiplication) formed by taking the real span of (centered) entrywise logarithms of all realizable matrices from $M$ using planar edge gadgets and polynomial interpolation. We then define a multiplicative homomorphism $F(\cdot)$ on the algebra ${A}$, which turns out to be a polynomial map. The exponents of prime factorization of component polynomials of $F$ induce graph distances for distance-regular graphs. These graphs are either the Hamming graphs or Doob graphs using a classification result for distance-regular graphs (if $\PlGH(M)$ is not \#P-hard), after obtaining their intersection numbers. The dichotomy is proved in either case. We then extend the complexity classification to all nonnegative matrices.

Truth or Sophistry? LoFa: A Benchmark for LLM Robustness Against Logical Fallacies

Xudong Shen, li Yuan, Ye Chen, Xin Wu South China University of Technology, Yi Cai South China University of Technology, Zhiyong Wu Tsinghua University

While Large Language Models (LLMs) exhibit strong semantic capabilities, their resilience to manipulative linguistic patterns such as logical fallacies remains an underexplored area. Prior work has focused on the ability of LLMs to identify or classify fallacies, but their robustness against these fallacies in persuasive contexts remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we introduce LoFa (Logical Fallacy), a comprehensive benchmark to evaluate LLM robustness against fallacies. We first construct the LoFa dataset via a multi-agent pipeline, pairing factual questions with fallacious arguments. Then, we develop a multi-round debate framework to assess model resilience under sustained attacks.Furthermore, to disentangle robustness from a model’s inherent knowledge limitations, we propose a new metric, LFR@k (Logical Fallacy Resistance), to quantify performance. Our experiments reveal that different LLMs exhibit varied robustness to distinct types of fallacies, highlighting unique vulnerability profiles across models.

MavenCoder: Competitive Code Generation via Model Adaptive Planning Strategies and Multi-Perspective Verification Enhancement

ZhenChun Xu, Yi Cai South China University of Technology, Dajun Zheng, li Yuan, Mengchen Zhao South China University of Technology, Qixiang Wang, Jiexin Wang

With the rapid advancement of large language models (LLMs), automated code generation has made remarkable progress. Recent studies explore multi-agent collaboration and adopt planning–coding–debugging workflows to enhance performance. However, these approaches are constrained by rigid, predefined workflows that fail to flexibly adjust their plans and lack effective verification of intermediate reasoning steps. In this work, we propose MavenCoder, a model-adaptive and verification–enhanced framework for competition-level code generation. MavenCoder leverages adaptive assessment aligned with the model’s capabilities to select planning strategies, while providing timely feedback and correction via multi-perspective verification. This adaptive problem-solving paradigm mitigates earlier limitations by enabling flexible planning and timely error correction. Compared with existing state-of-the-art approaches, MavenCoder achieves superior pass@1 results across multiple benchmarks, achieving 87.5% on LiveCodeBench, 93.9% on HumanEval+, 81.7% on MBPP+, and 46.1% on CodeContests, outperforming recent agent-based systems with improvement exceeding 3%–40%.

SeDev: Structured Semantic Exploration for LLM-Driven Code Generation

Ronghui Yang South China University of Technology, Jie Liu South China University of Technology, Jiajie Zeng South China University of Technology, Jiexin Wang, Jiuchuan Jiang, Bo An Nanyang Technological University, Yi Cai South China University of Technology, Mengchen Zhao South China University of Technology

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable capabilities in automating code generation. Recent approaches that incorporate feedback refinement mechanisms into the generation process have further enhanced software generation quality. However, these methods can be characterized as single-path approaches, which suffer from insufficient exploration of the vast solution space, often causing even the most powerful models to get stuck in local optima and struggle to generate the desired software. Some other works use Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to explore multiple paths for finding the best solution; yet, MCTS can be extremely inefficient in practice. To this end, we propose SeDev, a novel LLM-driven code generation framework that efficiently finds high-quality solutions in only a few iterations. The core idea of SeDev is to gradually explore semantically adjacent solutions through structured prompt guidance and feedback on previous trials, while using unit tests to evaluate the quality of exploration. To distill the exploration experience, SeDev incorporates a feedback synthesis module that translates unit test results within exploration into comprehensive suggestions. We construct a challenging feature oriented software benchmark FSD-bench++, along with two open datasets to evaluate. Experimental results show that SeDev outperforms baselines while maintaining reasonable time and computational costs. Code is available here.

MatchTIR: Fine-Grained Supervision for Tool-Integrated Reasoning via Bipartite Matching

Changle Qu, Sunhao Dai, Hengyi Cai, Jun Xu Renmin University of China, Shuaiqiang Wang Baidu Inc., Dawei Yin Baidu

Tool-Integrated Reasoning (TIR) empowers large language models (LLMs) to tackle complex tasks by interleaving reasoning steps with external tool interactions. However, existing reinforcement learning methods typically rely on outcome- or trajectory-level rewards, assigning uniform advantages to all steps within a trajectory. This coarse-grained credit assignment fails to distinguish effective tool calls from redundant or erroneous ones, particularly in long-horizon multi-turn scenarios. To address this, we propose MatchTIR, a framework that introduces fine-grained supervision via bipartite matching-based turn-level reward assignment and dual-level advantage estimation. Specifically, we formulate credit assignment as a bipartite matching problem between predicted and ground-truth traces, utilizing two assignment strategies to derive dense turn-level rewards. Furthermore, to balance local step precision with global task success, we introduce a dual-level advantage estimation scheme that integrates turn-level and trajectory-level signals, assigning distinct advantage values to individual interaction turns. Extensive experiments on three benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of MatchTIR. Notably, our 4B model surpasses the majority of 8B competitors, particularly in long-horizon and multi-turn tasks. Our codes are available at https://anonymous.4open.science/r/MatchTIR.

CADMate: Generating CAD Assembly Plan with Geometric Chain-of-Thought and Spatial Physical Rewards

Jiali Chen, DingBa Fu, Xusen Hei, Yuhang Liu, Yiyang Chen, Jiayuan Xie, Wenqi Fan The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Yi Cai South China University of Technology

Computer-aided design (CAD) is crucial in prototyping complex 3D objects through precise geometric modeling. In practical design workflows, designers manually define assembly sequences for individual CAD parts, a process that is both time-consuming and expertise-intensive. To address this challenge, we formulate CAD assembly as a parametric action prediction task: given a reference design image and disassembled parts, the model predicts 6-DoF transformations (, actions) to progressively assemble each part. This paradigm enables multimodal large language models (MLLMs) to solve the task through autoregressive action generation. While recent MLLMs demonstrate promising spatial reasoning, they struggle with fine-grained geometric structure understanding and physical collision avoidance during assembly. In this paper, we propose CADMate, an MLLM-based framework for sequential CAD assembly action generation. Our training strategy comprises three stages: (i) CAD domain adaptation for spatial geometry and position understanding, (ii) supervised fine-tuning with geometric chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning for action generation, and (iii) reinforcement learning with spatial-physical rewards jointly optimize spatial accuracy and collision avoidance. Additionally, we also construct CADBuilder dataset, comprising over 45K CAD assemblies with annotated action sequences. Our experiments demonstrate that CADMate significantly outperforms existing prominent MLLMs (, GPT-5), showing great potential in design applications.
