Rebuilding a Field's Open-Problem Catalog from the Literature: A Two-Layer Knowledge Graph, and Why Status Must Stay Proposed

Madhulatha Mandarapu, Sandeep Kunkunuru

A research field records its open problems in surveys, keynotes and community reports. Those are prose, written every few years, and nobody can ask them who works on a problem now or whether it was settled last year. We argue the problems should be data, and we build the system that makes them so: a hand-curated problem layer carried in unchanged, under an evidence layer rebuilt from a bibliographic index, joined by typed, provenance-carrying links in one graph database and queryable from one language. A language model does four jobs -- per-paper extraction, catalog grounding, per-paper status verdict, and idea generation -- each constrained to a candidate set so out-of-set answers are refused rather than stored. We report a study on two curated catalogs, database research (1,053 problems) and AI research (1,000 problems), each with a prior catalog-only graph. The rebuilt graph answers every question the catalog-only graph answered -- 47 of 47 on databases, 34 of 35 on AI -- plus questions the catalog-only graph refused: recent workers, untouched problems, methods tried, and outside papers bearing on a problem (336 problems, 770 works on databases). The capability we most wanted does not survive its own audit. Of 41 solves and refutes verdicts hand-checked against the papers, 9 are correct, 30 partly correct and 2 wrong; no refutes verdict (0 of 34) disproves an open problem, and only 1 of 7 solves closes the central question. We report that failure in full and draw the design conclusion: a status change must be proposed with its evidence and never applied, making the human reviewer part of the architecture. We close with the data-engineering problems this raises: entity resolution across curated and harvested layers, verifying model status claims, freshness under source quotas, and evaluation without ground truth.

Constant-Factor Approximation for Non-Splitting Coflow Scheduling in Heterogeneous Parallel Networks via Iterative Relaxation

Chi-Yeh Chen

Coflows capture the collective communication requirements of data-parallel applications, and scheduling them well is essential to the performance of modern data centers. We study non-splitting coflow scheduling in a heterogeneous parallel network whose $m$ network cores may be Electronic Packet Switches (EPS), not-all-stop Optical Circuit Switches (OCS), or all-stop OCS, where every flow must be transmitted entirely through a single core. Previous approximation algorithms for this setting have guarantees that grow linearly with the number of cores $m$ or with the maximum flow degree $τ$ of a port, and therefore become weak as data centers deploy more cores. The source of this dependence is the rounding step: rounding each flow to the core holding its largest fractional value can inflate the load of a port by a factor of $m$. We replace this step with an iterative relaxation rounding scheme that handles the input-port and output-port capacity constraints simultaneously. For minimizing the makespan, this yields approximation ratios of $\min\{τ, 3\}$, $2\min\{τ, 3\}$, and $4\min\{τ, 3\}$ for pure EPS, pure not-all-stop OCS, and pure all-stop OCS networks, respectively. For minimizing the total weighted coflow completion time, we obtain approximation ratios of $8\min\{τ, 4\}$, $16\min\{τ, 4\}$, and $32\min\{τ, 4\}$ for the same three architectures. In a hybrid network, the guarantee is governed by the weakest architecture present, so the overall ratios are at most $4\min\{τ,3\}\le 12$ and $32\min\{τ,4\}\le 128$, respectively. Unlike all previous guarantees for non-splitting coflow scheduling in heterogeneous parallel networks, these bounds are absolute constants that do not grow with the number of cores $m$ or with the flow degree $τ$. We also show that the integrality gap of the underlying linear program is at least $2$.

IMRouter: Imbalance-aware Temporal Pattern Routing for LLM-based Time Series Forecasting

Xin Yang, Cai Xu, Haishun Chen, Ying Liu, Jie Zhao, Wei Zhao, Ziyu Guan

Accurate time series forecasting (TSF) is essential for Web applications, such as traffic monitoring and online resource management. Recent advances in leveraging pre-trained large language models (LLMs) have shown promising performance in TSF. However, existing LLM-based TSF methods largely optimize the overall forecasting objective while overlooking temporal pattern imbalance (TPI), where different temporal patterns occur at highly unequal frequencies. Our empirical analysis reveals that TPI is prevalent across widely used TSF benchmarks, with substantially higher forecasting errors on less frequent patterns. To address this issue, we propose IMRouter (Imbalance-aware Temporal Pattern Routing), a novel framework that mitigates TPI-induced biases in both temporal representation learning and cross-modal alignment. Specifically, IMRouter introduces Pattern-Adaptive Temporal Representation Learning (PATR), which leverages gradient conflict and local gradient density to guide expert specialization. By penalizing incompatible expert assignments with density-aware weighting, PATR reduces the dominance of frequent optimization signals in router training. Furthermore, Routing-Guided Semantic Alignment (RGSA) transfers the pattern-specific knowledge learned by the router to cross-modal alignment through mutual information maximization, preserving distinctive temporal information across different patterns. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of IMRouter, particularly in improving forecasting performance on less frequent temporal patterns.

NTR: Neural Token Reconstruction for Scene Token Bottleneck in End-to-End Driving

Jiahui Li, Jiawei Sun, Zixiang Ren, Ming Liu, Jiamin Shi, Ruiteng Zhao, Zhiyang Liu, Liying Liu 等 10 位作者

Recent perception-free end-to-end (E2E) autonomous driving methods bypass explicit perception outputs by compressing dense image patch tokens into compact scene tokens for downstream trajectory generation and scoring. While these scene tokens form a compact visual bottleneck for the planner, they receive supervision solely from the planning objective, providing limited constraints on the encoded visual information. To address this limitation, we introduce Neural Token Reconstruction (NTR), a representation learning framework to directly constrain the compact scene-token bottleneck in perception-free driving. NTR introduces a self-distillation masked latent reconstruction objective that reconstructs masked patch-level latent features using only compact scene tokens as reconstruction memory. This forces reconstruction gradients to pass exclusively through the scene-token bottleneck, encouraging scene tokens to preserve richer and less redundant visual representations for planning. We further introduce semantic priors derived from foundation-model annotations as a weak semantic interface biasing reconstruction targets toward driving-related structures without introducing explicit perception heads. All auxiliary reconstruction components are removed at inference time, leaving the deployed planner unchanged. NTR achieves state-of-the-art performance on three public autonomous driving benchmarks, including 8.0461 RFS on Waymo E2E and 94.1 PDMS / 90.9 EPDMS on NavSim1&2. The learned scene tokens exhibit lower pairwise redundancy and higher effective rank, indicating that effective bottleneck supervision improves both compact visual representation learning and planning performance.

Polynomial-Time Constructions of Asymptotically Good Random Access Codes from Linear Codes

Ruho Kondo, Yota Maeda

Random access codes (RACs) encode a $q$-ary input string into fewer $q$-ary symbols while allowing any requested input symbol to be recovered with probability above the random-guessing value $1/q$. However, it remains unclear what asymptotic guarantees on compression and recovery probability should be required of RACs. We address this question by introducing the notion of asymptotically good RACs and give two polynomial-time constructions. First, an $[n,k,d]_q$ linear code with $d\ge2$, together with an encoder based on its orthogonal-array property, yields an $(n,n-k)_q$-RAC with worst-case decoding success probability \[ p_{\rm wc}=\frac{1}{q}+\left(1-\frac{1}{q}\right)\frac{d-2}{n}. \] These OA-RACs are asymptotically good whenever the underlying linear codes are, and Garcia--Stichtenoth algebraic-geometry codes give a concrete polynomial-time realization. Second, a direct-sum strategy using OA-RACs derived from $q$-ary Hamming codes and the trivial $(1,1)_q$-RAC yields asymptotically good RAC families at every prescribed RAC rate $R_{\rm RAC}=(n-k)/n\in(0,1)$. Numerical results demonstrate favorable finite-length performance of both constructions.

We introduce Nemotron 3.5 Super and Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, open and efficient Mixture-of-Experts Hybrid Mamba-Transformer models designed for reasoning, long-context understanding, and agentic workloads. Super is a 120B-parameter, 12B-active multimodal model, while Lightning is a smaller 30B-parameter, 3B-active text model; both designed for efficient deployment. Both models combine large-scale distillation, long-context training, and native speculative decoding, while Super further incorporates Indic continued pretraining and agentic software-engineering mid-training. We develop a comprehensive post-training pipeline spanning supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning (RLVR and RLHF), complemented in Super by specialized teacher training and multi- teacher on-policy distillation (MOPD). This transforms Super from a text-only base model into a multimodal agent capable of reasoning over text, images, video, and interactive tool environments. We further explore test-time scaling through parallel agent execution and self-verification. Across training and deployment, we jointly optimize capability and efficiency. Indic continued pretraining improves Indian-language benchmarks by up to 9.82 percentage points, while agentic mid-training strengthens software-engineering capabilities and robustness across agent harnesses. The post-trained Super model achieves 51.78% on SWE-bench Pro, surpassing Nemotron 3 Ultra despite using approximately 4.6x fewer active parameters. Post-training MTP boosting improves speculative- decoding acceptance length by up to 21.8% under probabilistic draft sampling, while NVFP4 quantization achieves 99.62% median accuracy recovery relative to BF16. Inference optimizations enable up to 4,856 output tokens/s/GPU on GB200 while sustaining at least 50 tokens/s/user.

On the burst-covering radius of binary cyclic codes

Gabriel Sac Himelfarb, Moshe Schwartz

We define and study burst-covering codes. We provide some general bounds connecting the parameters of a code with its burst-covering radius. We then provide stronger bounds on the burst-covering radius of cyclic codes, by employing linear-feedback shift-register (LFSR) sequences. For the case of BCH codes we prove a bound on pattern frequencies in LFSR sequences, and using this tool, we bound the burst-covering radius of binary primitive BCH codes and Melas codes. We then present an efficient burst-covering algorithm for cyclic codes. Finally, we present a bound on the critical exponent of cyclic codes based on the burst-covering radius.

World Dreamer v5-lite: A Multi-Robot World Action Model with One Dreamer

Guoning Wu, Zijian Cai, Yuhang Zhang, Ying Liu, Yongbin Zheng

Multi-robot control requires integrating distributed camera views while predicting separate action sequences. Most vision-language-action and world-action models target one robot. Combining multiple views alone does not establish spatial correspondence between them. World Dreamer v5-lite is a multi-robot world-action model built around a shared world state for robot-specific action prediction. Calibrated features from a pretrained video encoder populate this state in workspace coordinates; its spatial size remains fixed as views are added. A vision-language model provides scene context and one query per robot. The queries read the shared state and exchange pose-aware information, while their action streams remain separate. Masked-view cooperative training withholds selected camera views from both visual branches while retaining all action targets. This encourages the use of observations shared by other robots. Pretraining uses more than 10,000 hours of trajectories from 20 simulated robot types, RoboFactory, and real robots. On RoboFactory, World Dreamer v5-lite achieves 74.0% mean success, 23.7 percentage points above the strongest evaluated baseline. Across four real-robot tasks, it reaches 78.8% mean success, a margin of 13.8 points. It also reaches 58.08% overall on RoboCasa365.

When to Intervene? An Empirical Study of Errors and Self-Recovery in LLM Agents

Chiming Duan, Tong Jia, Yingxi Chen, Minghua He, Lingzhe Zhang, Ying Li

LLM agents interact with Web services to perform tasks on users' behalf. Errors during these interactions can disrupt execution and prevent task completion, motivating external intervention. However, agents may self-recover through continued execution, raising the question of when to intervene and when to wait for self-recovery. We present an empirical study of errors and self-recovery in LLM agents. We construct ReInBench, a dataset containing 1,259 agent traces and 1,403 error events across computer-use and Web tasks. Our study examines how often and how quickly agents self-recover, how self-recovery relates to subsequent execution and task completion, and whether self-recovery can be predicted when an error occurs. We find that 725 error events self-recover, often within a few steps, with self-recovery performance differing across Execution LLMs. Self-recovery can also help agents recover from subsequent errors of the same type and support overall task completion. Intervention should therefore prioritize errors unlikely to self-recover, while allowing agents to continue when self-recovery is likely. Building on these empirical findings, we propose ReCoF, a method that predicts whether an error will self-recover to inform whether additional intervention is needed. ReCoF achieves an average relative improvement of 9.02% in Macro-F1 over the strongest baseline on ReInBench. Our code and data can be found at https://method-notes.github.io/ReCoF/.

Beyond Modeling Order: Dual-Path Spatiotemporal Representation Learning for Cross-Subject EEG Emotion Recognition

Zehui Xiao, Yi Zheng, Guixing Fu, Wenkai Lu, Lingfei He, Tao Tan, Yue Liu, Silun Wang 等 10 位作者

Cross-subject generalization remains a major challenge for EEG-based emotion recognition due to pronounced inter-subject variability in neural activity and emotion-related spatiotemporal patterns. Existing methods mainly alleviate inter subject differences through distribution alignment or contrastive learning, while paying limited attention to representation bias associated with fixed spatiotemporal modeling orders. We hypothesize that high-level emotion representations of the same EEG signal should remain consistent across different spatiotemporal modeling paths. Based on this hypothesis, we propose a Dual-Path Spatiotemporal Contrastive Learning (DP-STCL) framework for cross-subject EEG emotion recognition. DP-STCL employs two complementary encoders with independent parameters, namely a Temporal-to-Spatial (TS) path and a Spatial to-Temporal (ST) path, to model EEG spatiotemporal information under different integration orders. During representation learning, the same emotional stimulus is used to establish cross subject associations, while three complementary relations jointly constrain representation variations across subjects and modeling paths. This promotes stable and discriminative stimulus-related emotion representations. To further handle limited labeled target subject data, we introduce a LoRA-based few-shot adaptation strategy with low parameter overhead. Extensive cross-subject experiments on SEED, SEED-IV, SEED-V, and FACED show that DP-STCL consistently outperforms the compared methods, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving cross-subject EEG emotion recognition.

TP-JSCC: Efficient Token Pruning and Joint Source-Channel Coding for LVLMs-based 3D-VQA in Cloud-Edge Collaboration

Zhengxin Li, Chongzhen Tian, Hui Yuan, Hao Liu, Sam Kwong

Deploying large vision-language models (LVLMs) on resource-constrained embodied agents for 3D visual question answering necessitates cloud-edge collaboration. However, offloading massive visual data to the cloud over bandwidth-limited and noisy channels introduces severe latency and transmission distortion. To address this, we propose TP-JSCC, an efficient token pruning and joint source-channel coding method for LVLMs-based 3D-VQA in Cloud-Edge Collaboration. First, we develop a Local and Global Semantics-based Hybrid Token Pruning (LGS-HTP) module to significantly reduce the visual token count. By decoupling foreground-background tokens and jointly selecting local and global semantics, LGS-HTP effectively reduces redundancy while preserving reasoning-critical tokens. Second, we introduce a lightweight Token Joint Source-Channel Coding (T-JSCC) module to further compress the pruned tokens and ensure their robust transmission over error-prone channels. By employing lightweight cascaded linear layers and Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR)-adaptive mechanism, this module adapts to fluctuating channel conditions while maintaining minimal computational overhead. Extensive experiments on ScanQA and SQA3D datasets indicate the exceptional efficiency and robustness of our approach. Specifically, on ScanQA validation set, the LGS-HTP module could achieve 90% pruning ratio while incurring less than a 1% CIDEr loss. Building on this, the T-JSCC further compresses the tokens by 18 times, resulting in an overall 180 times data volume reduction for robust transmission, while saving 90% in computational complexity for LVLM deployment. Our code is available at https://github.com/yuanhui0325/TP-JSCC.

Intellectual Property Protection of Hyperdimensional Computing Classifiers: Black-Box Ownership Verification via Model Watermarking

Hamed Poursiami, Farshad Soleiman, Ahmad Tahmasivand, Guojing Cong, Thomas Potok, Khaled N. Khasawneh, Kai Zeng, Maryam Parsa

Hyperdimensional computing (HDC) offers efficient learning and inference for resource-constrained systems, yet ownership verification of its models remains underexplored. We present the first systematic investigation of model watermarking in HDC by adapting backdoor-based embedding to three classifiers with different prototype-learning mechanisms. Across four benchmarks, with conventional neural networks as references, we examine whether watermarks can be learned without compromising task accuracy and whether they survive subsequent model modification and replication. The error-driven classifiers, AdaptHD and OnlineHD, support verification at a nominal trigger exposure of 1% with at most 0.58 percentage points of mean accuracy loss, whereas single-pass Vanilla HDC requires greater exposure and can incur substantial accuracy costs. The error-driven models retain verification under native continued training, but extraction produces surrogates that reproduce much of the task behavior without verifiable watermarks. Watermark overwriting readily embeds attacker watermarks into HDC prototypes and erodes the owner's watermark more strongly than in the neural network references, although the strongest erosion coincides with large accuracy losses. We further deploy watermarked AdaptHD on an FPGA and stress its execution through undervolting and overclocking. Verification survives substantial computation errors, whereas more severe stress either causes verification failure together with accuracy collapse or results in inference timeouts. These findings establish the feasibility of watermarking in HDC while identifying limitations in retention under extraction and sensitivity to overwriting.

RSI Arena: Towards Recursive Self-Improvement with Human Feedback

Yue Huang, Yanbo Wang, Lichi Li, Yuanyuan Chen, Andreas Haupt, Xiaonan Luo, Zheyuan Liu, Jihye Choi 等 18 位作者

Can AI agents autonomously train useful language models and improve them using feedback from users? We introduce RSI Arena, a two-stage study of autonomous post-training as a step toward recursive self-improvement. Ten frontier models act as training agents, each starting from NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Lightning 30B-A3B Base. During a six-day first stage, each agent has 1,000 GPU-hours and $300 in API credit on a shared 64-GPU cluster, independently selecting data, implementing training procedures, and choosing checkpoints. We evaluate their models on 20 benchmarks and through blind human evaluations. All ten agents produce working assistants, with the strongest model, trained by GPT-6 Astra, closing a median of 76% of the base-to-Instruct gap across 12 capability benchmarks. Its human-preference rating is also close to NVIDIA Instruct after statistical adjustment for answer length and formatting. In Stage 2, each agent receives the comparison records and votes involving its Stage 1 model and is given three additional days for further training. Using NVIDIA Instruct as a common reference across the two evaluation rounds, we observe an improvement from Stage 1 to Stage 2 in the style-adjusted relative rating of eight of the ten models. We show that benchmark gains were modest, with no clear link to preference gains, while some agents encouraged longer responses and one model showed increased harmful compliance on StrongREJECT. RSI Arena provides an auditable setting for studying how human feedback can guide autonomous model development. It takes a step toward recursive self-improvement with human feedback (RSIHF), in which people help define what improvement means for the AI systems they use.

Automated ICD coding is a critical task for standardizing clinical information from electronic health records (EHRs) and supporting downstream healthcare administration. However, existing automated ICD coding systems face several fundamental challenges. First, the majority of existing research focuses on English ICD tasks, with limited attention to Chinese-language clinical contexts due to the scarcity of publicly available Chinese ICD datasets. Second, most approaches primarily target disease coding, overlooking procedure coding as well as the multi-stage workflows followed in real-world clinical practice. Moreover, many recent methods rely heavily on closed-source large language models or substantial computational resources, which limits their scalability and deployability in clinical environments. To address these gaps, this paper proposes JointCoder, which includes a real-world Chinese ICD coding dataset and a multi-agent framework that reformulates automated ICD coding as a joint disease-procedure coding task. JointCoder explicitly models real-world clinical coding workflows through stage-wise agent collaboration. All agents are instantiated using locally deployed 1.7B-parameter models, enabling scalable and privacy-preserving deployment.Extensive experiments on real-world Chinese ICD coding datasets demonstrate JointCoder’s superiority over state-of-the-art baselines across all evaluation metrics.

IF-RewardBench: Benchmarking Judge Models for Instruction-Following Evaluation

Bosi Wen, Yilin Niu, Cunxiang Wang, Xiaoying Ling, Ying Zhang, Pei Ke University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Hongning Wang Tsinghua University, Minlie Huang

Instruction-following is a foundational capability of large language models (LLMs), with its improvement hinging on scalable and accurate feedback from judge models. However, the reliability of current judge models in instruction-following remains underexplored due to several deficiencies of existing meta-evaluation benchmarks, such as their insufficient data coverage and oversimplified pairwise evaluation paradigms that misalign with model optimization scenarios. To this end, we propose IF-RewardBench, a comprehensive meta-evaluation benchmark for instruction-following that covers diverse instruction and constraint types. For each instruction, we construct a preference graph containing all pairwise preferences among multiple responses based on instruction-following quality. This design enables a listwise evaluation paradigm that assesses the capabilities of judge models to rank multiple responses, which is essential in guiding model alignment. Extensive experiments on IF-RewardBench reveal significant deficiencies in current judge models and demonstrate that our benchmark achieves a stronger positive correlation with downstream task performance compared to existing benchmarks. Our codes and data are available at https://github.com/thu-coai/IF-RewardBench.

IF-CRITIC: Towards a Fine-Grained LLM Critic for Instruction-Following Evaluation

Bosi Wen, Yilin Niu, Cunxiang Wang, Pei Ke University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Xiaoying Ling, Ying Zhang, Aohan Zeng Tsinghua University, Tsinghua University, Hongning Wang Tsinghua University 等 9 位作者

Instruction-following is a fundamental ability of Large Language Models (LLMs), requiring their generated outputs to follow multiple constraints imposed in input instructions. Numerous studies have attempted to enhance this ability through preference optimization or reinforcement learning based on reward signals from LLM-as-a-Judge. However, existing evaluation models for instruction-following still possess many deficiencies, such as substantial costs and unreliable assessments. To this end, we propose IF-CRITIC, an LLM critic for fine-grained, efficient, and reliable instruction-following evaluation. We first develop a checklist generator to decompose instructions and generate constraint checklists. With the assistance of the checklists, we collect high-quality critique training data through a multi-stage critique filtering mechanism and employ a constraint-level preference optimization method to train IF-CRITIC. Extensive experiments show that the evaluation performance of IF-CRITIC can beat strong LLM-as-a-Judge baselines, including o4-mini and Gemini-3-Pro. With the reward signals provided by IF-CRITIC, LLMs can achieve substantial performance gains in instruction-following optimization under lowercomputational overhead compared to strong LLM critic baselines. Our code and model are available at https://github.com/thu-coai/IF-CRITIC.

Learning to Think on Hypergraph: HyperCoT for Structure-Guided N-ary Knowledge Graph Completion

Mengxue Yang, Jinming Li, Chun Yang, Jiaqi Zhu Institute of Software, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jiafan Li, Guanhua Zhang Institute of Software Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ying Li University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

N-ary knowledge graph completion (KGC) aims to infer missing components in facts with multiple entities under distinct semantic roles, commonly formulated as a knowledge hypergraph link prediction task. Most embedding-based approaches score individual hyperedges relying on enriched structural representations, but overlook intermediate propagation states containing complementary local and global structural evidence. Despite their capability to generate chain-of-thought (CoT) representations for the classical KGC task, large language models (LLMs) struggle with hypergraph structure involving multiple facts, while current hypergraph QA methods only provide LLMs with a single query signal rather than path-level evidence. These limitations hinder the transferability of existing methods, especially those leveraging LLMs, to solve the knowledge hypergraph link prediction problem. To bridge this gap, we propose HyperCoT, a structure-aware approach that models multi-hop structural reasoning as a depth-sensitive progressive evidence accumulation process. It constructs a Graphical Chain-of-Thought (Graph-CoT) by aggregating role-aware hyperedge states along strongly correlated reasoning paths, and injects the resulting path-level structural evidence into each token in query and candidate entities to prompt LLMs. Experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate that HyperCoT consistently outperforms strong n-ary KGC baselines, particularly in high arity and structural sparsity scenarios, meanwhile yielding interpretable multi-hop reasoning traces.

Stop Fixating on Prompts: Reasoning Hijacking and Constraint Tightening for Red-Teaming LLM Agents

Yanxu Mao, Peipei Liu, Tiehan Cui, Congying Liu, Mingzhe Xing Zhongguancun Laboratory, Datao You

With the widespread application of LLM-based agents across various domains, their complexity has introduced new security threats. Existing red-team methods mostly rely on modifying user prompts, which lack adaptability to new data and may impact the agent’s performance. To address the challenge, this paper proposes the JailAgent framework, which completely avoids modifying the user prompt. Specifically, it implicitly manipulates the agent’s reasoning trajectory and memory retrieval with three key stages: Trigger Extraction, Reasoning Hijacking, and Constraint Tightening. Through precise trigger identification, real-time adaptive mechanisms, and an optimized objective function, JailAgent demonstrates outstanding performance in cross-model and cross-scenario environments.

RLSeek: Evidence-Grounded Reasoning for RAG Hallucination Detection

Large language models (LLMs) in retrieval-augmented generation systems can still produce hallucinations, generating content that is unsupported or contradicted by the source texts and undermines reliability. Recent work addressed this problem by training span-level hallucination detectors using reinforcement learning (RL) and chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning. In this work, we show through error analysis that incorrect predictions by existing reasoning-based detectors are strongly associated with CoT processes that lack explicit grounding in source evidence, particularly when verification steps do not quote or verify claims against the retrieved documents. This behaviour contrasts with human verification practices in benchmarks such as RAGTruth, where evidence quotation is a prerequisite for determining hallucinated spans. Motivated by this observation, we propose an evidence-grounded RL framework, namely RLSeek, to explicitly enforce active evidence seeking during CoT reasoning by requiring quotation of relevant source segments at each verification step. Experiments on the RAGTruth and NewsSum dataset demonstrate consistent improvements in hallucination span detection performance, with limited additional reasoning overhead and improved robustness in out-of-domain settings.

Memorization, Emergence, and Explaining Reversal Failures: A Controlled Study of Relational Semantics in LLMs

Yihua Zhu, Qianying Liu NII, Jiaxin Wang Kyoto University, Fei Cheng Kyoto University, Chaoran Liu NII, Akiko Aizawa National Institute of Informatics, Sadao Kurohashi National Institute of Informatics (NII) and Kyoto University, Hidetoshi Shimodaira Kyoto University and RIKEN

Autoregressive LLMs perform well on relational tasks that require linking entities via relational words (e.g., father/son, friend), but it is unclear whether they learn the logical semantics of such relations (e.g., symmetry and inversion logic) and, if so, whether reversal-type failures arise from missing relational semantics or left-to-right order bias. We propose a controlled Knowledge Graph-based synthetic framework that generates text from symmetric/inverse triples, train GPT-style autoregressive models from scratch, and evaluate memorization, logical inference, and in-context generalization to unseen entities to address these questions. We find a sharp phase transition in which relational semantics emerge with sufficient logic-bearing supervision, even in shallow (2–3 layer) models, and that successful generalization aligns with stable intermediate-layer signals. Finally, order-matched forward/reverse tests and a diffusion baseline indicate that reversal failures are primarily driven by autoregressive order bias rather than deficient inversion semantics.

Joint Knowledge Base Completion and Question Answering by Combining Large Language Models and Small Language Models

Yinan Liu Northeastern University, Dongying Lin, Sigang Luo, Xiaochun Yang, Bin Wang

Knowledge Bases (KBs) play a key role in various applications. As two representative KB-related tasks, knowledge base completion (KBC) and knowledge base question answering (KBQA) are closely related and inherently complementary with each other. Thus, it will be beneficial to solve the task of joint KBC and KBQA to make them reinforce each other. However, existing studies usually rely on the small language model (SLM) to enhance them jointly, and the large language model (LLM)’s strong reasoning ability is ignored. In this paper, by combining the strengths of the LLM with the SLM, we propose a novel framework JCQL, which can make these two tasks enhance each other in an iterative manner. To make KBC enhance KBQA, we augment the LLM agent-based KBQA model’s reasoning paths by incorporating an SLM-trained KBC model as an action of the agent, alleviating the LLM’s hallucination and high computational costs issue in KBQA. To make KBQA enhance KBC, we incrementally fine-tune the KBC model by leveraging KBQA’s reasoning paths as its supplementary training data, improving the ability of the SLM in KBC. Extensive experiments over two public benchmark data sets demonstrate that JCQL surpasses all baselines for both KBC and KBQA tasks.

On the Effect of Hyperparameters in Language Modeling for Computational Linguistics

Ruoxi Ning, Yongpeng Zhu, Qingcheng Zeng, Tatsuki Kuribayashi Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Freda Shi Vector Institute and University of Waterloo

Training language models and examining their linguistic behaviors have been a common protocol in computational linguistics for studying linguistic phenomena and modeling human language processing. However, work in this area is often limited to proof-of-concept demonstrations with arbitrary model configurations, without considering hyperparameter sensitivity, an important source of variation in model performance. In this work, we replicate three prior studies (Chang and Bergen, 2022; Hu et al., 2020b; Kuribayashi et al., 2024) with hyperparameters varied within a practical range, and show that modest hyperparameter changes can alter some qualitative conclusions about models’ linguistic abilities and even reverse the ranking of model performance. Our results highlight the risk that prior work may have reflected optimization artifacts rather than the genuine inductive biases of model classes, and that hyperparameter sensitivity should receive more attention as a factor that can meaningfully influence model behavior. We suggest future work to report the variation of performance across the configuration space to enhance the reliability and generalizability of conclusions. RealChart2Code: Bridging the Gap in Real-World Chart-to-Code Generation via Multi-Task Evaluation

Jiajun Zhang, Yuying Li, Zhixun Li, Xingyu Guo, Jingzhuo Wu, Leqi Zheng, Yiran Yang, Jianke Zhang 等 15 位作者

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have demonstrated impressive capabilities in code generation across various domains. However, their ability to replicate complex, multi-panel visualizations from real-world data remains largely unassessed. To address this gap, we introduce RealChart2Code, a new large-scale benchmark with over 2,800 instances grounded in authentic datasets and featuring tasks with clear analytical intent. Crucially, it is the first benchmark to systematically evaluate chart generation from large-scale raw data and assess iterative code refinement in a multi-turn conversational setting. Our comprehensive evaluation of 14 leading VLMs on RealChart2Code reveals significant performance degradation compared to simpler benchmarks, highlighting their struggles with complex plot structures and authentic data. Our analysis uncovers a substantial performance gap between proprietary and open-weight models and confirms that even state-of-the-art VLMs often fail to accurately replicate intricate, multi-panel charts. These findings provide valuable insights into the current limitations of VLMs and guide future research directions.

Layer-Wise High-Impact Parameter Ratio Optimization in Post-Training Quantization for Large Language Models

Cuong Pham Monash University, Anh Dung Hoang, Cuong C. Nguyen, Trung Le Monash University, Gustavo Carneiro University of Surrey, Thanh-Toan Do

Large language models (LLMs) have advanced natural language processing, but their massive parameter counts create computational and memory challenges during deployment. Post-training quantization (PTQ) has emerged as a promising approach to mitigate these challenges. While existing PTQ methods can effectively quantize LLMs, they experience substantial accuracy loss at extremely low bit-widths due to high-impact parameters. Several approaches address this by retaining high-impact parameters in FP16 format, but they apply fixed ratios across all layers, overlooking layer-wise sensitivity variations. We propose a quadratic optimization framework that determines layer-specific ratios of high-impact parameters while considering inter-layer dependencies. We quantize high-impact parameters to moderate bit-widths while the remaining parameters are quantized to extremely low bit-widths. Under the same resource budget, this preserves more high-impact parameters than methods retaining a few in FP16 format. Our framework enables leveraging advanced quantization methods for high-impact parameters while applying lightweight computational quantization methods to the rest, achieving an effective balance between computational efficiency and accuracy during quantization process.

EconProver: Towards More Economical Test-Time Scaling for Automated Theorem Proving

Mukai Li, Linfeng Song Google, Zhenwen Liang Tencent AI Lab, Jiahao Xu Tencent AI Lab, Shansan Gong, Qi Liu University of Hong Kong, Haitao Mi Tencent AI Lab, Dong Yu CapitalOne

Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently advanced the field of Automated Theorem Proving (ATP), attaining substantial performance gains through widely adopted test-time scaling strategies, notably reflective Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning and increased sampling passes. However, they both introduce significant computational overhead for inference. Moreover, existing cost analyses typically regulate only the number of sampling passes, while neglecting the substantial disparities in sampling costs introduced by different scaling strategies. In this paper, we systematically compare the efficiency of different test-time scaling strategies for ATP models and demonstrate the inefficiency of the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) open-source approaches. We then investigate approaches to significantly reduce token usage and sample passes while maintaining the original performance. Specifically, we propose two complementary methods that can be integrated into a unified EconRL pipeline for amplified benefits: (1) a dynamic Chain-of-Thought (CoT) switching mechanism designed to mitigate unnecessary token consumption, and (2) Diverse parallel-scaled reinforcement learning (RL) with trainable prefixes to enhance pass rates under constrained sampling passes. Experiments on miniF2F and ProofNet demonstrate that our EconProver-GD achieves comparable performance to baseline methods with only 12% of the computational cost. This work provides actionable insights for deploying lightweight ATP models without sacrificing performance.

Beyond Single-View Detection: A Dual-Space Reasoning Framework for Interpretable Harmful Meme Understanding

Wenqing Hou, Hongkui Tu, Ye Wang Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), Yue Zhang, Yuying Liu National University of Defense Technology, Dong Zhu, Liqun Gao, Bin Zhou National University of Defense Technology

The identification of harmful memes extends beyond a mere classification task, encompassing challenges related to multi-perspective semantic comprehension and hierarchical reasoning. Prevailing approaches predominantly depend on modal alignment or black-box classifiers, which fail to capture implicit biases and lack interpretability. In this study, we propose BPDMoE-Hate, a novel framework grounded in dual-space mixture-of-experts, which innovatively conceptualizes harmful meme detection as an integrated process of “viewpoint decoupling and hierarchical fusion”. Our approach generates adversarial binary perspectives via Visual-Language Models (VLMs) and incorporates an adaptive viewpoint gating to facilitate viewpoint selection, thereby enabling the model to autonomously discern implicit semantic inclinations. Moreover, we propose the Hyperbolic-Euclidean space expert to effectively capture the hierarchical structural relationships and semantic correlations between multimodal and viewpoint features, thereby enabling interpretable reasoning at the geometric representation level. Empirical evaluations conducted on three mainstream datasets demonstrate that BPDMoE-Hate not only substantially surpasses existing methodologies in performance but also offers visual explanations for viewpoint selection and hierarchical structuring, thereby advancing the field of interpretable multimodal content analysis.

SPAGBias: Uncovering and Tracing Structured Spatial Gender Bias in Large Language Models

Binxian Su, Haoye Lou, Shucheng Zhu Renmin University of China, Weikang Wang, Ying Liu Tsinghua University, Tsinghua University, Dong Yu, Pengyuan Liu Beijing Language and Culture University

Large language models (LLMs) are being increasingly used in urban planning, but since gendered space theory highlights how gender hierarchies are embedded in spatial organization, there is concern that LLMs may reproduce or amplify such biases. We introduce SPAGBias — the first systematic framework to evaluate spatial gender bias in LLMs. It combines a taxonomy of 62 urban micro-spaces, a prompt library, and three diagnostic layers: explicit (forced-choice resampling), probabilistic (token-level asymmetry), and constructional (semantic and narrative role analysis). Testing six representative models, we identify structured gender-space associations that go beyond the public-private divide, forming nuanced micro-level mappings. Story generation reveals how emotion, wording, and social roles jointly shape “spatial gender narratives”. We also examine how prompt design, temperature, and model scale influence bias expression. Tracing experiments indicate that these patterns are embedded and reinforced across the model pipeline (pre-training, instruction tuning, and reward modeling), with model associations found to substantially exceed real-world distributions. Downstream experiments further reveal that such biases produce concrete failures in both normative and descriptive application settings. This work connects sociological theory with computational analysis, extending bias research into the spatial domain and uncovering how LLMs encode social gender cognition through language.

Decoding Scientific Experimental Images: The SPUR Benchmark for Perception, Understanding, and Reasoning

Junpeng Ding, Zichen Tang Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Haihong E Beijing University of Post and Telecommunication, Mengyuan Ji, Yang Liu, Haolin Tian, Haiyang Sun, Pengqi Sun 等 20 位作者

We introduce SPUR, a comprehensive benchmark for scientific experimental image perception, understanding, and reasoning, comprising 4,264 question-answering (QA) pairs derived from 1,084 expert-curated images. SPUR features three key innovations: (1) Panel-Level Fine-Grained Perception: evaluating the visual perception of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) across three dimensions (numerical, morphological, and information localization) on six fine-grained panel types; (2) Cross-Panel Relation Understanding: utilizing complex images with an average of 14.3 panels per sample to evaluate MLLMs’ ability to decipher intricate cross-panel relations; (3) Expert-Level Reasoning: assessment of qualitative and quantitative reasoning across five experimental paradigms to determine if models can infer conclusions from evidence as human experts do. Comprehensive evaluation of 20 MLLMs and four multimodal Chain-of-Thought (MCoT) methods reveals that current models fall significantly short of the expert-level requirements for scientific image interpretation, underscoring a critical bottleneck in AI for Science (AI4S) research.

FineSteer: A Unified Framework for Fine-Grained Inference-Time Steering in Large Language Models

Zixuan Weng Pennsylvania State University, Jinghuai Zhang University of California, Los Angeles, Kunlin Cai University of California, Los Angeles, Ying Li, Peiran Wang, Yuan Tian University of California, Los Angeles

Large language models (LLMs) often exhibit undesirable behaviors, such as safety violations and hallucinations. Although inference-time steering offers a cost-effective way to adjust model behavior without updating its parameters, existing methods often fail to be simultaneously effective, utility-preserving, and training-efficient due to their rigid, one-size-fits-all designs and limited adaptability. In this work, we present FineSteer, a novel steering framework that decomposes inference-time steering into two complementary stages—conditional steering and fine-grained vector synthesis—allowing fine-grained control over when and how to steer internal representations. In the first stage, we introduce a Subspace-guided Conditional Steering (SCS) mechanism that preserves model utility by avoiding unnecessary steering. In the second stage, we propose a Mixture-of-Steering-Experts (MoSE) mechanism that captures the multimodal nature of desired steering behaviors and generates query-specific steering vectors for improved effectiveness. Through tailored designs in both SCS and MoSE, FineSteer maintains robust performance on general queries while adaptively optimizing steering vectors for targeted inputs in a training-efficient manner. Extensive experiments on safety and truthfulness benchmarks show that FineSteer outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in overall performance (e.g., a 7.6% improvement on TruthfulQA over Llama-3), achieving stronger steering performance with minimal utility loss. The code is available at https://github.com/YukinoAsuna/FineSteer

GeoArena: Evaluating Open-World Geographic Reasoning in Large Vision-Language Models

Pengyue Jia City University of Hong Kong, Yingyi Zhang, Xiangyu Zhao City University of Hong Kong, Sharon Li

Geographic reasoning is a fundamental cognitive capability that requires models to infer plausible locations by synthesizing visual evidence with spatial world knowledge. Despite recent advances in large vision-language models (LVLMs), existing evaluation paradigms remain largely outcome-centric, relying on static datasets and predefined labels that are conceptually misaligned with open-world geographic inference. Such outcome-centric evaluations often focus exclusively on label matching, leaving the underlying linguistic reasoning chains as unexamined black boxes. In this work, we introduce GeoArena, a dynamic, human-preference-based evaluation framework for benchmarking open-world geographic reasoning. GeoArena reframes evaluation as a pairwise reasoning alignment task on in-the-wild images, where human judges compare model-generated explanations based on reasoning quality, evidence synthesis, and plausibility. We deploy GeoArena as a public platform and benchmark 17 frontier LVLMs using thousands of human judgments, which complements existing benchmarks and supports the development of geographically grounded, human-aligned AI systems. We further provide detailed analyses of model behavior, including reliability of human preferences and factors influencing judgments of geographic reasoning quality. We open-source GeoArena to foster future research.
