原文摘要

Tactile vision-language-action models (VLAs) and tactile world-action models (WAMs) are a promising new paradigm for contact-rich manipulation, but existing models either underutilize touch, rely on large-scale tactile pretraining, or incur high inference latency due to iterative video generation. We present VTAM, an efficient visuo-tactile world-action model for contact-rich manipulation that requires no tactile or action pretraining. RGB and tactile observations share a frozen video VAE and the pretrained video transformer weights. VTAM first adapts the video backbone to jointly predict future visual and tactile latents, then fine-tunes it end-to-end with a randomly initialized action expert that predicts actions, proprioceptive states, and a light flow-force proxy computed from tactile optical flow. Trained only on task demonstrations, VTAM outperforms all baselines on four real-robot tasks across two platforms with different tactile sensors, outperforms all baselines without tactile pretraining in average success on eight UniVTAC simulation tasks, and is comparable to tactile VLAs and WAMs pretrained on over 30K hours of largely visuo-tactile robot data (83.4% vs. 84.5% for N0-TWAM). Without full video denoising at inference, VTAM is approximately 6x and 16x faster than N0-TWAM and LingBot-VA without compilation, with compiled latency comparable to Fast-WAM. Ablations show that feeding frozen-VAE tactile features directly to the action expert, bypassing tactile world modeling, fails on every tested task, that Stage I visuo-tactile world-model fine-tuning improves UniVTAC success on most tasks, and that flow-force proxy keeps the policy from fully ignoring touch. The tactile encoder transfers zero-shot across GelSight Mini and Xense Photon sensors.

原文摘要

Large-scale egocentric human interaction data is becoming an important source of physical supervision for embodied learning, yet video alone leaves the contact and pressure that characterize physical interaction unrecorded. Recent visual-tactile datasets provide this missing supervision, but their synchronized tactile data remain far smaller in volume than human video. Moreover, the largest resources often merge recordings from different sensors or annotation procedures, which makes the effect of data scale difficult to isolate. We therefore introduce TouchScale, a 500-hour dataset of contact-rich human interaction recorded with a single unified wearable setup. Its approximately 2K predefined task descriptions span everyday activities and structured manipulation, and each recording temporally aligns egocentric RGB-D video with wrist RGB video and dense full-hand bimanual tactile measurements. Compared with prior tactile data, training on the full TouchScale raises zero-shot contact IoU on data from an unseen tactile sensor from 0.134 to 0.383. Pretraining a visual encoder on TouchScale also yields the highest action recognition accuracy on three benchmarks among the compared visual-tactile datasets. Used for visual-tactile mid-training of a robot policy, TouchScale improves the average real-world success rate across four contact-rich manipulation tasks from 22.5% to 57.5%. With the sensor and collection protocol held fixed, both zero-shot tactile prediction and robot success show an overall upward trend as more TouchScale data is used. These results suggest that human visual-tactile data collected at scale with consistent sensing benefits both perception and robot manipulation. We will publicly release TouchScale, including all synchronized visual-tactile recordings and reconstructed object models, to support future research on scalable visual-tactile learning.

Robot manipulation in everyday environments inherently involves substantial tool usage. Seemingly simple household tasks, such as cooking pan-fried tofu, require forceful cutting, delicate brushing, and precise placement using different tools under contact-rich interaction. Thus, the ability to autonomously swap and use task-appropriate tools is important for tool-centric manipulation. We introduce SwapBot, a modular, tool-centric end effector system featuring low-cost adapters that quickly convert common household tools into robot end effectors. Rather than pursuing a single universal gripper, SwapBot adopts a unified design principle that combines a fixed robot-side coupling interface with low-cost, tool-side adapters, enabling compatibility with diverse tools, including articulated ones, and multiple robot platforms. Each adapter integrates compact tactile sensors, supports fast autonomous swapping, and interfaces with an intuitive teleoperation system for efficient demonstration collection. User studies show that, during teleoperation, SwapBot reduces task completion time and operator workload. Using collected demonstrations on the robot, we train imitation learning policies to successfully perform tool-centric tasks like cooking tofu, stirring salad, flipping meat. Our ablation study shows that using tactile-augmented demonstrations improves policy performance across contact-rich skills, increasing success rates by 15 to 25 percentage points over RGB-only policies. These results highlight modular, tactile-equipped tools as a practical and extensible pathway toward robust and capable robot manipulation. Democratizing LLM Training with the Edge: Challenges, Systems, and the Road Ahead

原文摘要

The growing computational power of modern GPU data centers has let a few industrial giants train and deploy large language models (LLMs) on massive amounts of data. Yet the sheer scale of these models and their training data makes centralized development increasingly hard to sustain, and at the same time shuts out smaller institutions that hold relevant private data but lack comparable infrastructure. In this paper, we organize our positions on distributed LLM training around the pretraining and fine-tuning paradigms, covering federated learning, split learning, and decentralized approaches, and we assess their readiness for geo-distributed settings with heterogeneous hardware and unreliable connectivity. We then present a {\em unified} system architecture built around a cloud-hosted parameter server that coordinates heterogeneous clients over outbound gRPC connections, reusing one communication, compression, and fault-tolerance stack for both pretraining and a family of fine-tuning methods. We validate the design with real geo-distributed experiments on GPT-2 Medium and Llama3-1B pretraining across multiple university sites, showing stable convergence under realistic conditions. Finally, we chart the road ahead, identifying open problems that span frontier model support, elastic fault tolerance, adaptive compression, federated alignment, privacy and trust, incentive design, and system--algorithm co-design, all of which must be addressed to make democratized LLM training a reality.
