Inkitiate: Initiating and Steering Agent Assistance through Ink in a Spatial Workspace

Liangwei Wang, Nan Chen, Luna K. Qiu, Zilong Wang, Fugee Tsung, Yuyu Luo, Yuqing Yang

Handwriting and sketching help people develop ideas around information. As this work unfolds, users may seek assistance with finding, understanding, and organizing materials. We investigate how ink can initiate and steer agent assistance in this process. An eight-participant formative study explored desired assistance and interaction expectations, informing three connected activities: bringing materials in, thinking with materials, and shaping the space. We present Inkitiate, a spatial workspace for ink-based agent assistance in knowledge work. Through ink, users retrieve external materials, build on accumulated content and results, and reorganize the canvas, while inspecting and guiding agent actions. In a study with eighteen participants, users reported favorable usability and low perceived workload, and used retained ink and materials to develop further ink queries. An ink-query vocabulary and cases reveal how users combine linguistic and graphical expressions to direct agents. These findings inform ink-based agent interaction design for expressive requests and continued work with materials.

When LLMs Read Tables Carelessly: Measuring and Reducing Data Referencing Errors

While large language models (LLMs) perform well on table tasks, they still make data referencing errors (DREs), i.e., incorrectly citing or omitting table values, despite understanding the table structure. Beyond final-answer accuracy, DREs directly compromise the correctness and reliability of intermediate reasoning steps. Yet prior studies have only offered limited, small-scale analyses. In this work, we present the first systematic evaluation of tabular data referencing errors across different models and tasks. Our results show that DREs occur across all tested models (1.7B to 20B parameters). Furthermore, we demonstrate that incorporating data referencing as a critic significantly improves answer accuracy up to 12.0%, through critic-based filtering and rejection sampling. Finally, we trained a lightweight 4B-parameter critic model that achieves an average F1 score of 78.2% in detecting both in-distribution and out-of-distribution DREs, and effectively assists inference for larger models.

LongLLMLingua:通过提示压缩加速并增强长上下文场景中的大语言模型

LongLLMLingua: Accelerating and Enhancing LLMs in Long Context Scenarios via Prompt Compression

AI 速览:提出 LongLLMLingua 提示压缩方法,旨在同时缓解长上下文场景下的计算成本高、性能下降和位置偏差三大问题。

In long context scenarios, large language models (LLMs) face three main challenges: higher computational cost, performance reduction, and position bias. Research indicates that LLM performance hinges on the density and position of key information in the input prompt. Inspired by these findings, we propose LongLLMLingua for prompt compression towards improving LLMs' perception of the key information to simultaneously address the three challenges. Our extensive evaluation across various long context scenarios demonstrates that LongLLMLingua not only enhances performance but also significantly reduces costs and latency. For instance, in the NaturalQuestions benchmark, LongLLMLingua boosts performance by up to 21.4% with around 4x fewer tokens in GPT-3.5-Turbo, leading to substantial cost savings. It achieves a 94.0% cost reduction in the LooGLE benchmark. Moreover, when compressing prompts of about 10k tokens at ratios of 2x-6x, LongLLMLingua can accelerate end-to-end latency by 1.4x-2.6x. Our code is available at https://aka.ms/LongLLMLingua.
