Perception Over Geometry: Rethinking Gaussian Allocation in Mesh-based Splatting

Yuting Wang, Yang Zhao, Shanding Diao, Penglin Wang, Yuan Chen, Wei Jia, Ronggang Wang

原文摘要

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) enables photorealistic novel-view synthesis but lacks explicit topology for geometric editing. Existing mesh-based methods enable geometric manipulation by associating Gaussians with triangular mesh faces, typically assigning a fixed number of Gaussians to each face. However, the representation capacity required for appearance reconstruction depends on local appearance complexity rather than merely on mesh tessellation density. To address these limitations, we propose P-MGS, a framework that separates appearance modeling from geometric control to achieve high quality rendering, compact representation, and flexible mesh editing. P-MGS introduces a perceptual complexity guided allocation strategy that distributes Gaussians according to surface appearance demand estimated from multiview observations. To preserve reconstruction flexibility, Gaussians are optimized without mesh constraints and subsequently associated with the original mesh through post hoc binding, retaining adaptive refinement while preserving mesh topology. During mesh editing, local affine deformation transfer updates Gaussian centers and covariances under mesh deformation, reducing misalignment and floating artifacts. Experiments demonstrate superior average novel view synthesis quality with fewer Gaussians and coherent mesh editing.

Verified Implementation of the Next-gen Borrow Checking Algorithm for Rust via Abstract Interpretation

Jinhua Wu, Yuting Wang, Zhemin Chen

原文摘要

Borrow checking is a central mechanism for Rust to ensure temporal memory safety. Its correctness is based on the intuition that the Aliasing XOR Mutability discipline guarantees that programs without borrow errors inherently could not access invalid references (i.e., pointers). However, existing work on formalizing borrow checking treats it either as a component of type systems or as symbolic execution describing resource transfer. None provides a direct explanation of the correctness of borrow checking algorithms such as Non-Lexical Lifetimes (NLL) or Polonius in the official Rust compiler that function more like static pointer analysis. We take a first step toward solving this problem by formalizing Polonius, the next-generation borrow- checking algorithm for the Rust compiler, on a core subset of Rust. We prove its correctness by showing that any program accepted by Polonius does not access invalid references at runtime. The key observation is that, when borrow checking is performed lazily, Polonius could be treated as a forward abstract interpretation on abstract domains recording pointer aliasing (borrowing) relations. By providing a concrete semantics that formally describes the Aliasing XOR Mutability discipline, we prove the soundness of this abstract interpretation, from which we derive memory safety of checked programs. This formulation of Polonius is implemented and formally verified in the abstract interpretation framework of CompCert. The correctness proofs are generated by an agentic AI under human guidance using paper proofs as proof outline. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive formalization and verification of a borrow checking algorithm as manifested in the Rust compiler.

From Verbatim to Gist: Distilling Pyramidal Multimodal Memory via Semantic Information Bottleneck for Long-Horizon Video Agents

原文摘要

While multimodal large language models have demonstrated impressive short-term reasoning, they struggle with long-horizon video understanding due to limited context windows and static memory mechanisms that fail to mirror human cognitive efficiency. Existing paradigms typically fall into two extremes: vision-centric methods that incur high latency and redundancy through dense visual accumulation, or text-centric approaches that suffer from detail loss and hallucination via aggressive captioning. To bridge this gap, we propose MM-Mem, a pyramidal multimodal memory architecture grounded in Fuzzy-Trace Theory. MM-Mem structures memory hierarchically into a Sensory Buffer, Episodic Stream, and Symbolic Schema, enabling the progressive distillation of fine-grained perceptual traces (verbatim) into high-level semantic schemas (gist).Furthermore, to govern the dynamic construction of memory, we derive a Semantic Information Bottleneck objective and introduce SIB-GRPO to optimize the trade-off between memory compression and task-relevant information retention. In inference, we design an entropy-driven top-down memory retrieval strategy.Extensive experiments across 4 benchmarks confirm that MM-Mem achieves state-of-the-art performance on both offline and streaming tasks, demonstrating robust generalization and validating the effectiveness of cognition-inspired memory organization.Code and associated configurations are publicly available at ‘https://github.com/EliSpectre/MM-Mem‘.
