Financial backtests of large language models (LLMs) are meaningful only if the model did not already know the outcomes it is asked to predict. Practitioners guard against this by trusting a vendor's stated knowledge cutoff, by asking the model what it knows, or by instructing it to answer as of a past date. To verify whether any of these safeguards can be trusted, we introduce FinDendro, a benchmark of 2,226 dated U.S. facts from 1999 to 2026, covering monthly macroeconomic series, month-end stock prices and Federal Reserve decisions. Each fact yields four prompts: a value question, Recall and Predict questions that pair each candidate value with a claim of knowing or guessing without a declared date, and a Predict question with a historical declared date. Controls for persistence and dominant outcomes keep chance accuracy near 0.27. Results show that for most frontier models, self-reports understate knowledge. GPT-5 answers 76% of controlled facts correctly but claims to know 38%, and answers 61% of the facts it says it does not know. Knowledge claims can persist beyond the measured knowledge boundary, by up to seven quarters, and a declared date removes most of the claims of prior knowledge while leaving accuracy unchanged. Backtests inside a model's training window therefore cannot be certified leak-free by self-report, instruction or stated cutoff. These findings motivate behavioral measurement of temporal knowledge boundaries, and FinDendro provides a benchmark and procedure for selecting backtest periods based on demonstrated factual knowledge.
We study randomized allocations (lotteries) of indivisible chores under additive costs and introduce the notion of MMS1, which requires each agent's bundle to satisfy the maximin share (MMS) bound after the removal of at most one chore. Our main result establishes that every instance admits an ex-ante proportional lottery in whose support every allocation is MMS1 and all but $o(n)$ agents satisfy MMS. Consequently, every realized allocation can be made MMS by disposing of at most $o(n)$ chores. The proposed framework further achieves ex-ante proportionality alongside ex-post $4/3$-MMS, $o(n)$-AMMS, or $1$-out-of-$d$ MMS for $d=(1-o(1))n$. These guarantees substantially improve upon state-of-the-art bounds for MMS allocation for chores with disposal or subsidy, best-of-both-worlds fairness, approximate AMMS, and ordinal MMS approximations.
We study the comparison-query complexity of computing allocations that are envy-free up to one item (EF1) for $n$ agents with heterogeneous additive preferences over $m$ indivisible items. In this model, the algorithm may only query which of two bundles an agent prefers, without ever observing numerical valuations or costs. Prior work established $O(\log m)$ query bounds for at most three agents, leaving open whether query complexity logarithmic in $m$ is achievable for every fixed $n \ge 4$. We resolve this open question in the affirmative: for every fixed $n\ge2$, we design algorithms that compute EF1 allocations using $O(\log m)$ comparison queries, matching the known $Ω(\log m)$ lower bound. Our results hold for both chores with nonnegative costs and goods with nonnegative valuations.

Guqin (古琴) Jianzi (減字) is an open and freely compositional tablature system that encodes performance actions rather than acoustic outcomes. Its automatic recognition remains largely unexplored, as conventional OCR assumes a closed and enumerable glyph set and struggles with Jianzi’s unbounded composition and manuscript-level variability. We introduce Zero-shot Jianzi Recognition, which formulates Jianzi recognition as vision-to-sequence prediction of canonical component sequences under a zero-shot split. To enable scalable supervision, we construct Synthetic-JZ from aligned online composition metadata. We then synthesize manuscript-like training images via component-wise style recomposition and manuscript-domain noise modeling, and fine-tune a vision–language model for end-to-end component sequence recognition. At inference time, a lightweight legality-guided correction module re-ranks decoding candidates, suppressing structural hallucinations without modifying the backbone.Experiments on two benchmarks show that our method achieves 63.02% sequence accuracy on Real-JZ, our manually annotated real-world Jianzi benchmark, surpassing Gemini-3-Pro by 35.11%. This result highlights the feasibility of reliable automated Jianzi recognition and its potential for large-scale digitization of historical Guqin Jianzi Pu manuscripts.

Search-engine date filters are widely used to enforce pre-cutoff retrieval in retrospective evaluations of search-augmented forecasters. We show this approach is unreliable across two major search engines: auditing Google Search’s before: filter and DuckDuckGo’s date-range filter, we find that at least one retrieved page contains major post-cutoff leakage for 71% of questions on Google and 81% on DuckDuckGo, and the answer is directly revealed for 41% and 55%, respectively. Using gpt-oss-120b to forecast with these leaky documents, we demonstrate inflated prediction accuracy (Brier score 0.10 vs. 0.24 with leak-free documents). We characterize recurring leakage mechanisms, including updated articles, related-content modules, unreliable metadata, and absence-based signals, and argue that date-restricted search on these engines is insufficient for credible retrospective evaluation. We recommend stronger retrieval safeguards or evaluation on frozen, time-stamped web snapshots.
