Think Less, Locally: Local Preference Learning for Reasoning Compression

Muyao Yuan, Liyan Xu, Weizhan Zhang, Muyan Jiao, Jiangnan Li, Jinchao Zhang, Jie Zhou

Large reasoning models achieve strong performance on challenging tasks, but their long chain-of-thought often incurs substantial inference costs by continuing to deliberate after sufficient information has been obtained. Existing reasoning compression methods primarily operate on reasoning trajectories, paying less attention to the local decision of whether further reasoning is necessary given the current state. We propose LoCo, a local preference learning method for reasoning compression. LoCo detects candidate overthinking states from the model's own traces, freezes the corresponding reasoning prefixes, regenerates shorter verified continuations from the same states, and trains on the resulting state-conditioned preference pairs with DPO. This formulation teaches the model when to continue reasoning and when to conclude, rather than simply encouraging shorter trajectories overall. We construct training data entirely from self-generated mathematical traces and evaluate LoCo on five mathematical and three code generation benchmarks. LoCo reduces completion length by 41.7\%--45.4\% on mathematics and 23.4\%--36.3\% on code, while maintaining or improving accuracy and achieving the best AUC across all code benchmarks. LoCo consistently improves the accuracy-efficiency trade-off on mathematics and transfers effectively to code generation despite math-only training, demonstrating the cross-domain generality of local preference learning for reasoning compression. The code and model will be publicly released at https://github.com/MuyaoYuan/LoCo.

Balancing Chain-of-Thought and Answer Supervision for Small Language Models on Medical Question Answering

Le Zhou, Xiao Luo, Chinmay Chandra, Zhan Zhang

Small language models (<=9B parameters) can support local medical question answering (QA) while reducing privacy and latency concerns, but effective fine-tuning remains challenging. This paper compares two chain-of-thought (CoT) supervised fine-tuning methods: Uniform-across-Sequence (UaS), which applies equal loss weighting to the full CoT-and-answer sequence, and Segment-weighted (SwS), which separately weights CoT and answer losses. We evaluate six general- and medical-domain models on multiple-choice QA (MedQA and EMS-MCQA) and free-text QA (Med-O1). Results show that neither method is universally best: on multiple-choice QA (MedQA and EMS-MCQA), SwS generally performs better, with general-purpose models benefiting most; notably, Qwen3.5-4B improves by up to 44.8% over its zero-shot baseline on MedQA. In contrast, medical-domain models show smaller or even negative gains on MCQs. On free-text QA (Med-O1), UaS performs best for nearly all models and provides consistent improvements across both model types, with the 3B Llama-3.2 model approaching the performance of much larger 7B medical-domain models. We also find that excessively long CoT generation is associated with lower performance in some models on either multiple-choice or free-text QA tasks, suggesting that limiting the CoT length during training may benefit selected models. Overall, the results show that CoT loss weighting should be matched to the task format and the knowledge already encoded in the base model, rather than using a single fine-tuning strategy for all clinical QA tasks.

VGGT-$Ω$

Recent feed-forward reconstruction models, such as VGGT, have proven competitive with traditional optimization-based reconstructors while also providing geometry-aware features useful for other tasks. Here, we show that the quality of these models scales predictably with model and data size. We do so by introducing VGGT-$Ω$, which substantially improves reconstruction accuracy, efficiency, and capabilities for both static and dynamic scenes. To enable training this model at an unprecedented scale, we introduce architectural changes that improve training efficiency, a high-quality data annotation pipeline that supports dynamic scenes, and a self-supervised learning protocol. We simplify VGGT's architecture by using a single dense prediction head with multi-task supervision and removing the expensive high-resolution convolutional layers. We also use registers to aggregate scene information into a compact representation and introduce register attention, which restricts inter-frame information exchange to these registers, in part replacing global attention. In this way, during training, VGGT-$Ω$ uses only about 30% of the GPU memory of its predecessor, allowing us to train with 15x more supervised data than prior work and to leverage vast amounts of unlabeled video data. VGGT-$Ω$ achieves strong results for reconstruction of static and dynamic scenes across multiple benchmarks, for example, improving over the previous best camera estimation accuracy on Sintel by 77%. We also show that the learned registers can improve vision-language-action models and support alignment with language, suggesting that reconstruction can be a powerful and scalable proxy task for spatial understanding. PLANA3R: Zero-shot Metric Planar 3D Reconstruction via Feed-Forward Planar Splatting

Changkun Liu, Bin Tan, Zeran Ke, Shangzhan Zhang, Jiachen Liu, Ming Qian, Nan Xue, Yujun Shen 等 9 位作者

This paper addresses metric 3D reconstruction of indoor scenes by exploiting their inherent geometric regularities with compact representations. Using planar 3D primitives - a well-suited representation for man-made environments - we introduce PLANA3R, a pose-free framework for metric Planar 3D Reconstruction from unposed two-view images. Our approach employs Vision Transformers to extract a set of sparse planar primitives, estimate relative camera poses, and supervise geometry learning via planar splatting, where gradients are propagated through high-resolution rendered depth and normal maps of primitives. Unlike prior feedforward methods that require 3D plane annotations during training, PLANA3R learns planar 3D structures without explicit plane supervision, enabling scalable training on large-scale stereo datasets using only depth and normal annotations. We validate PLANA3R on multiple indoor-scene datasets with metric supervision and demonstrate strong generalization to out-of-domain indoor environments across diverse tasks under metric evaluation protocols, including 3D surface reconstruction, depth estimation, and relative pose estimation. Furthermore, by formulating with planar 3D representation, our method emerges with the ability for accurate plane segmentation. The project page is available at https://lck666666.github.io/plana3r
