摘要

Dominant Resource Fairness (DRF) is a resource allocation scheme, addressing the problem of fair allocation of multiple resource types among users with heterogeneous demands for different types of resources. Based on Max-min Fairness, which is a well-established algorithm in the literature for allocating resources in single resource type scenarios, DRF generalises the main principle of maximising the minimum share given to any user to the multiple resource case. It has a number of desirable properties, such as Sharing Incentive, Envy-Freeness, Pareto Efficiency, and Strategy Proofness, that make it preferable over alternatives, and as such, it is widely adopted in distributed systems. In the present study, we revisit the original study and analyse the structure of the algorithm in closer view. The main contribution is an alternative algorithm, which approximates the DRF allocation in linear time, significantly improving over the original algorithm's pseudo-polynomial runtime. We name the new algorithm Precomputed Dominant Resource Fairness (PDRF), after its main working principle. We provide bounds for approximating the original algorithm, and critically evaluate the agreements of aforementioned properties, comparing DRF and PDRF over them. It turns out that there is an adversarial strategy which forces DRF to unfairly allocate more resources to users who submit inflated demands. PDRF, on the other hand, favouring smaller demands, penalises such adversarial behaviour and creates incentive for users to submit their minimal demands.
