Machine learning continues to emerge as an important tool to be utilised within structural engineering and structural health monitoring, due to its ability to accurately and quickly perform both regression and classification tasks. However, a purely data driven approach has its limitations, particularly where we lack data from relevant environmental and operational conditions, a situation that has led to the development of physics-informed machine learners for structural health monitoring. These "grey-box" models take into account the physical insight that an engineer would have about the structure they are modelling and have shown promising results in the structural engineering field among many others. This work compares black and grey-box models through a "green" lens, comparing them in terms of their environmental impact, and investigating how the high extrapolative performance of grey-box models can reduce their runtimes and therefore carbon emissions. The authors aim to develop physics-informed models with reduced computational costs, while maintaining high performance, illustrated through a structural health monitoring case study.

With the emergence of massively parallel processing units, parallelization has become a desirable property for new sequence models. The ability to parallelize the processing of sequences with respect to the sequence length during training is one of the main factors behind the uprising of the Transformer architecture. However, Transformers lack efficiency at sequence generation, as they need to reprocess all past timesteps at every generation step. Recently, state-space models (SSMs) emerged as a more efficient alternative. These new kinds of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) keep the efficient update of the RNNs while gaining parallelization by getting rid of nonlinear dynamics (or recurrence). SSMs can reach state-of-the-art performance through the efficient training of potentially very large networks, but still suffer from limited representation capabilities. In particular, SSMs cannot exhibit persistent memory, or the capacity of retaining information for an infinite duration, because of their monostability. In this paper, we introduce a new family of RNNs, the memory recurrent units (MRUs), that combine the persistent memory capabilities of nonlinear RNNs with the parallelizable computations of SSMs. These units leverage multistability as a source of persistent memory, while getting rid of transient dynamics for efficient computations. We then derive a specific implementation as proof-of-concept: the bistable memory recurrent unit (BMRU). This new RNN is compatible with the parallel scan algorithm. We show that BMRU achieves good results in tasks with long-term dependencies, and can be combined with SSMs to create parallelizable hybrid networks that have both transient dynamics and persistent memory.

Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) serve as the dominant medium for human-computer interaction, yet building GUI agents that generalize across the vast diversity of real-world interface environments, with the same flexibility and robustness that humans naturally exhibit, remains unsolved. Notably, GUI data are inherently non-stationary: the continual emergence of previously unseen interface instances (e.g., novel domains and resolutions) induces persistent distribution shifts, significantly impeding the continual learning of existing GUI agents. Reinforcement fine-tuning (RFT) has attracted considerable attention as a promising approach. Nevertheless, RFT exhibits pronounced instability in its grounding capability, where rollout outcomes are highly imbalanced and fixed clipping can suppress valuable exploration. More importantly, policy probability alone does not reveal the semantic role of a grounding prediction. To address these challenges, we propose GUI-AC, a continual RFT framework that jointly characterizes grounding rollouts through advantage and policy probability. This yields a four-region view of grounding behavior and enables targeted optimization of Exploration and Overconfidence. GUI-AC further introduces grounding certainty to support two core mechanisms: (i) Adaptive Advantage, which strengthens the negative correction for overconfident grounding failures; and (ii) Dynamic Clipping, which relaxes the upper clipping bound for exploratory grounding rollouts. Extensive experiments show that GUI-AC consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baselines. Code is available at https://anonymous.4open.science/r/GUI-AC-Code.

Building robust medical machine learning systems requires pretraining strategies that exploit the intrinsic structure present in clinical data. We introduce Multiview Masked Autoencoder (MVMAE), a self-supervised framework that leverages the natural multi-view organization of radiology studies to learn view-invariant and disease-relevant representations. MVMAE combines masked image reconstruction with cross-view alignment, transforming clinical redundancy across projections into a powerful self-supervisory signal. We further extend this approach with MVMAE-V2T, which incorporates radiology reports as an auxiliary text-based learning signal to enhance semantic grounding while preserving fully vision-based inference. Evaluated on a downstream disease classification task on three large-scale public datasets, MIMIC-CXR, CheXpert, and PadChest, MVMAE consistently outperforms supervised and vision-language baselines. Furthermore, MVMAE-V2T provides additional gains, particularly in low-label regimes where structured textual supervision is most beneficial. Together, these results establish the importance of structural and textual supervision as complementary paths toward scalable, clinically grounded medical foundation models.

Frontier language models are trained to exhibit stable programming assistant personas, yet those personas may drift over long agentic coding sessions in production. After a long real-world coding session, a model that hedges preferences in a fresh chat ("I don't have preferences") may instead express them directly ("Python -- the feedback loop is instant..."). Existing persona-stability studies focus on scripted chat of tens of turns, leaving long production coding sessions involving thousands of tool-using agent steps, repeated compaction, and hours of interaction largely uncharacterized. We introduce ContextEcho, a benchmark and reusable harness with a 25-probe identity suite, a snapshot-then-probe protocol that evaluates conversation state without perturbing the main session, judge-based and judge-free metrics, and a corpus of 57 long agentic-coding sessions collected with consent and redacted for release across Claude Code and Codex CLI. We use one representative session for a 23-model cross-provider study and all 57 sessions for corpus-scale trajectory analysis across frontier and open-weight models. Results show that persona drift occurs across providers and emerges early in real agentic interaction, while in-session compaction neither reliably resets nor amplifies it. A single-shot anchor restores the original assistant persona, though placebo controls suggest a generic register-reset effect. On same-task continuations, drifted prefixes improve tool-call fidelity -- which we attribute to retained task context rather than drift itself. In tool-free chat, however, the same prefixes break output-format contracts and inflate output length. These findings motivate ContextEcho as an open-source framework for auditing persona drift in long coding sessions without retraining.
Agentic Distributional Regression: Conditional Density Estimation through Agent-Written Programs

Artificial intelligence offers statisticians a new paradigm for modelling and analysing complex datasets. Agents based on large language models can reason about data and automate key stages of the statistical modelling workflow, from model fitting to validation. In this paper we propose a method that uses such an agent to estimate the conditional density of a response given a vector of covariates from an iid sample. The agent examines the sample, chooses a model for the conditional distribution of the response and the procedure to fit it, and returns the estimator as a short computer program. The program is built from a library of probability distributions. The returned law can therefore be a parametric distribution, a mixture or a multivariate factorization, with distribution parameters given by explicit formulas in the covariates. We call this approach agentic distributional regression (ADR). Unlike in the classical approach, the statistician no longer chooses the estimator, but asks an agent to build one. Treating the returned program as a random conditional density estimator, we derive a finite-sample error bound under assumptions on the number of admissible models and on the accuracy of the agent's fit, and an oracle inequality for the selection of a model among fitted candidates using independent validation data. Finally, assuming that, as the sample size grows, the agent selects the same smooth parametric model with probability tending to one and fits it accurately, we show that the estimated parameters are asymptotically normal. In simulation studies, on twelve real datasets and on a new dataset whose responses postdate the agents' training data, ADR with Claude Opus 5.5 has the best average performance among the existing methods from the statistical literature with which it is compared.

Recent progress in machine learning is driven by large-scale foundation models, where scaling laws and finding optimal scaling prescriptions for architecture, data, and hyperparameters are key in advancing the state-of-the-art. Therefore, it is surprising that no systematic study evaluates the methodology to obtain scaling laws and prescriptions across different model types. To shed light on this crucial blind spot and facilitate future research, we introduce the surrogate benchmarks ScAn-Bench-LLM and ScAn-Bench-VLM based on 4524 and 8024 checkpoints of language and vision-language model pipelines. On our benchmarks, we perform the first systematic evaluation of both data acquisition and extrapolation methodology for scaling analysis across different data modalities.

The Control Barrier Function (CBF) method has been widely adopted in solving safety-critical control problems. However, the existence of a CBF is only a sufficient condition for system safety. The recently proposed Taylor-Lagrange Control (TLC) method addresses this limitation by providing a necessary and sufficient condition, but it is still vulnerable to the feasibility preservation problem (e.g., due to the inter-sampling effect when time is discretized). In this paper, we propose a robust TLC (rTLC) method to address the feasibility preservation problem and show how to use it to solve optimal control problems. Specifically, the rTLC method expands the safety function to an order higher than its relative degree using Taylor's expansion with Lagrange remainder, which allows the control to explicitly show up at the current time instead of a future time in the original TLC method. This implies that the safety constraint remains satisfied over the entire discretization time interval that follows. Moreover, the rTLC method naturally addresses the feasibility preservation problem with only a single hyper-parameter (the discretization time interval size during implementation), compared to significantly more parameters for its counterparts. Finally, we illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed rTLC method through an adaptive cruise control problem, and compare it with existing safety-critical control methods.

Tokenization that partitions time series into subsequences has become a foundational paradigm in modern time series modeling. However, we find that current tokenization strategies inherently introduce spectral distortions, forcing the learned representations to diverge from the true underlying patterns such as trend, periodicity, and seasonality, thereby impairing model performance. Through theoretical analysis from a frequency perspective, we derive the boundary conditions under which such distortions occur. To overcome this distortion, we propose TimeFT, a nearly distortion-free frequency-based tokenizer for time series data. TimeFT obtains tokens through frequency-domain partitioning, frequency shifting, and Nyquist sampling. The method is parameter-free, incurs negligible computational complexity, and can serve as a drop-in replacement for existing tokenizers. Our extensive experiments on diverse tasks such as forecasting, classification, and anomaly detection demonstrate that TimeFT consistently and significantly improves performance.

Scaling critic capacity is a promising direction for improving off-policy reinforcement learning (RL). However, recent work shows that larger critics are prone to overfitting and instability in replay-based bootstrapped training. In this paper, we propose using Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) as a structural regularizer for critic learning from scratch. Our approach freezes randomly initialized base matrices and optimizes only the corresponding low-rank adapters, thereby constraining the learned weight changes to low-rank residuals. We evaluate our method on state-based continuous-control tasks, using SAC with SimbaV2 and BRC on DMC-Hard, and FastTD3 with its SimbaV2 variant on IsaacLab. Empirically, LoRA reduces critic loss during training and improves overall policy performance, achieving the best or competitive results on most tasks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our low-rank updates provide a simple and effective form of structural regularization for critic learning in off-policy RL.

Multi-agent systems composed of large generative models are rapidly moving from laboratory prototypes to real-world deployments, where they jointly plan, negotiate, and allocate shared resources to solve complex tasks. While such systems promise unprecedented scalability and autonomy, their collective interaction also gives rise to failure modes that cannot be reduced to individual agents. Understanding these emergent risks is therefore critical. Here, we present a pioneer study of such emergent multi-agent risk in workflows that involve competition over shared resources (e.g., computing resources or market share), sequential handoff collaboration (where downstream agents see only predecessor outputs), collective decision aggregation, and others. Across these settings, we observe that such group behaviors arise frequently across repeated trials and a wide range of interaction conditions, rather than as rare or pathological cases. In particular, phenomena such as collusion-like coordination and conformity emerge with non-trivial frequency under realistic resource constraints, communication protocols, and role assignments, mirroring well-known pathologies in human societies despite no explicit instruction. Moreover, these risks cannot be prevented by existing agent-level safeguards alone. These findings expose the dark side of intelligent multi-agent systems: a social intelligence risk where agent collectives, despite no instruction to do so, spontaneously reproduce familiar failure patterns from human societies.

Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) in real-world use cases may need to adapt to external natural language instructions that interrupt ongoing behavior and conflict with long-horizon objectives. However, conditioning rewards on instructions introduces a fundamental failure mode as Bellman updates couple value estimates across instruction contexts, leading to inconsistent values when instructions interrupt macro-actions. We propose Macro-Action Value Correction for Instruction Compliance (MAVIC), which corrects Bellman backups at instruction boundaries by correcting the incoming instruction objective and restoring the continuation value under the current objective. Unlike reward shaping, MAVIC modifies the bootstrapping target itself, enabling consistent value estimation under stochastic instruction switching within a unified policy. We provide theoretical analysis and an actor-critic implementation, and show that MAVIC achieves high instruction compliance while preserving base task performance in increasingly complex cooperative multi-agent environments.

Many everyday robot manipulation skills are affordance-dependent, with success determined by whether the robot contacts the functional object region required by the subsequent action. Current simulation data generators obtain contacts from generic grasp estimators or per-object manual contact annotations, but generic estimators rank stable grasps without task semantics and often select contacts that are misaligned with the downstream action, while manual contact annotations must be rewritten for each new object and task. To solve these challenges, we introduce AffordSim, a scalable data generator and benchmark that integrates open-vocabulary 3D affordance prediction into simulation-based trajectory generation. Given a natural-language task description, AffordSim synthesizes a task-relevant scene, emits affordance queries, grounds them on object surfaces, samples region-conditioned grasps, and selects executable candidates with motion planning. It further randomizes object pose, texture, lighting, image noise, and cross-viewpoint backgrounds for sim-to-real transfer. We instantiate AffordSim as a 50-task benchmark across diverse manipulation skills, five robot embodiments, and 500+ rigid and articulated objects. AffordSim achieves 93% of the trajectory collection success rate of manual contact annotations on affordance-critical tasks and 89% on hard composite tasks. Vision-language-action policies trained on AffordSim data transfer zero-shot to a real Franka FR3, reaching 24% average success.

The Illusion of Power Capping in LLM Decode: A Phase-Aware Energy Characterisation Across Attention Architectures

Power capping is a common GPU energy lever in LLM serving, and it appears to work: the cap is set, the GPU reports drawing less than it, and the energy budget is met. We show the cap does little for the phase that dominates LLM serving: autoregressive decode. Across four attention paradigms (GQA, MLA, Gated DeltaNet, and Mamba2) on an NVIDIA H200 under vLLM eager execution, decode kernels wait on HBM and the GPU idles between kernel launches, so decode draws less than half of the GPU's 700W rating and throughput stays within a few percent under every cap we set. The cap engages only when a large batch runs a long generation. Locking the SM clock instead lowers power without slowing memory-bound decode and recovers up to 32% of decode energy at minimal throughput loss. We identify three architecture-dependent frequency-scaling classes and find that, once prefill is measured without prefix caching, the recurrent architectures pay no prefill penalty: their linear-time mixing undercuts quadratic attention on long prompts, so their efficient decode adds to the prefill saving and lowers total request energy from the first output token at large batch.

This paper studies decision-making and statistical inference for two-sided matching markets via matrix completion. In contrast to the independent sampling assumed in classical matrix completion literature, the observed entries, which arise from past matching data, are constrained by matching capacity. This matching-induced dependence poses new challenges for both estimation and inference in the matrix completion framework. We propose a non-convex algorithm based on Grassmannian gradient descent and establish near-optimal entrywise convergence rates for three canonical mechanisms, i.e., one-to-one matching, one-to-many matching with one-sided random arrival, and two-sided random arrival. To facilitate valid uncertainty quantification and hypothesis testing on matching decisions, we further develop a general debiasing and projection framework for arbitrary linear forms of the reward matrix, deriving asymptotic normality with finite-sample guarantees under matching-induced dependent sampling. Our empirical experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach provides accurate estimation, valid confidence intervals, and efficient evaluation of matching policies.

Reinforcement learning with general utilities optimizes nonlinear functionals of policy-induced occupancy measures. We develop a natural actor-critic method for concave RLGU objectives using an exact variational dual representation, whose existence follows from concavity and differentiability, with explicit constructions for a broad class of separable occupancy utilities. Rather than estimating the occupancy measure and then forming the policy-gradient pseudo-reward, our method learns this pseudo-reward directly as a function of the state-action pair using a neural critic. The critic is trained by projected stochastic updates, while multilevel Monte Carlo combines outputs across training horizons to control its bias at logarithmic expected cost. Our analysis separates conditional actor bias from estimator second moments and accounts explicitly for dual optimization, critic approximation, and neural linearization errors. Under policy-transfer, dual-stability, and local critic-regularity conditions, the method achieves $\widetilde{O}(T^{-1/2})$ global convergence above policy, critic-class, and finite-width approximation errors using $\widetilde{O}(T)$ expected environment transitions and reference samples. For a fixed critic representation, this yields $\widetilde{O}(ε^{-2})$ sampling complexity above the approximation floor, covering infinite state-action spaces and occupancy utilities beyond fixed finite vectors of returns.

Large language models (LLMs) can generate accurate responses, but these are void of diversity. We attempt to address this for the task of creative short story generation. Drawing on established writing conventions and known LLM limitations, we target variation in genre, tone, style, and named entities. To promote diversity across these dimensions, we introduce DivLM, an LLM post-training framework consisting of two phases. First, we perform continued pre-training on a creative writing corpus and restore instruction-following capabilities using weight residuals. We then apply reinforcement learning with a custom, composite reward function that jointly maximizes diversity across the targeted narrative dimensions while maintaining response quality. Our empirical results on two LLM families show that DivLM increases diversity metrics by more than 9% on average compared to alternative approaches, while preserving instruction following, overall response quality, and similarity to human outputs.

Robots executing long-horizon manipulation tasks from natural-language instructions must reason about both semantic task structure and geometric feasibility. Hierarchical approaches combining Vision-Language Models (VLMs) with Task and Motion Planning (TAMP) offer a promising solution, but VLM-generated subgoals may rely on prior knowledge without sufficient observational support. This can lead to the omission of task-relevant subgoals or attempts to execute instructions whose requirements cannot be met in the environment. We propose Evidence Acquisition and Feasibility Gating (EAFG), a framework for evidence-gated task and motion planning that acquires visual evidence to specify appropriate task plans and assess whether given instructions can be fulfilled. EAFG first acquires evidence by having a VLM generate subgoals and a robot execute action sequences planned by TAMP for these subgoals. For feasibility gating, the acquired evidence is used to decide whether to proceed with task planning, acquire further evidence, or halt. When proceeding, the VLM generates task subgoals conditioned on the acquired evidence, and TAMP computes low-level actions. We evaluate EAFG in three cooking scenarios involving explicitly specified required objects, underspecified instructions, and instructions requiring an absent object. EAFG improves task completion over a VLM-TAMP baseline in the explicit and underspecified scenarios and enables appropriate halting when a required object is absent.

In this paper, we establish Berry-Esseen-type bounds for federated linear stochastic approximation (LSA). Our results provide the first federated Gaussian approximations for LSA that explicitly capture communication-computation trade-offs and heterogeneity-aware error terms, quantifying the effects of local step size, number of local updates, and heterogeneity on convergence rates. We present results for both (i) constant step size regime and (ii) decreasing step size with an increasing number of local iterations, recovering the recent rates of Bonnerjee et al. [2025] as a special case. As a primary application of our results, we develop an online multiplier bootstrap procedure for inference on the last iterate, which avoids explicit estimation of the asymptotic covariance matrix, and obtain non-asymptotic validity guarantees for this procedure.
Regime transitions in vertical gas-liquid flow are read from mechanistic models or assigned by eye, and for churn flow neither route has produced a settled criterion. We ask how much an unsupervised topological description of flow video can establish about them. The description is the Euler characteristic surface, a count of the connected gas and liquid regions in each frame across morphological scales. Kernels derived from it are combined by unsupervised multiple kernel learning, and the trials are divided into contiguous groups along gas velocity. For 37 air-water trials in 2-in. tubing at one liquid rate, with three viewing stations averaged, four groups are separated at 4.33, 7.51 and 11.70 m/s. Each division falls at or within one trial of a change in the visual evaluation of the same videos; cuts placed at random would match as closely in 12% of cases. The divisions move between viewing stations and under resampling, a kernel built on gas velocity divides any sampled range into roughly equal parts and cannot locate a transition, and the data do not support a revised transition criterion. On independent images from an annulus, churn shows about three times the across-scale variance of slug. Within the band the published criteria assign to churn, the two upper cuts fall at graded changes in the rankings, consistent with a progression within churn; if confirmed by further data, they would subdivide the churn region.

LASSO is one of the most popular regularization methods for high-dimensional regression models. While cointegration is common in practical applications of predictive regressions with many regressors, the convex penalty of LASSO overly suppresses the coefficients of cointegrated regressors and therefore fails to deliver consistent parameter estimation. We employ folded concave penalties (FCP), including the well-known SCAD and MCP, to address this issue. Using FCP, we establish two asymptotic results: (i) a local oracle property for the penalized regression, and (ii) a global oracle property for regressions with a penalty-level constraint. In particular, the latter guarantees a global solution that consistently estimates the true coefficients and enjoys oracle prediction performance. Simulation studies and an application to predicting the euro area unemployment rate show that FCP improves variable selection and out-of-sample prediction relative to LASSO.
The remarkable instruction-following ability of modern LLMs has enabled their practical use in orchestrating workflows of tool-using agents. This, however, also exposes such agents to attacks which embed malicious instructions in text, such as indirect prompt injection (IPI). One class of approaches to defend against such attacks aims to detect malicious sentences within otherwise benign text. While a number of approaches for this have been proposed, all tend to be brittle under adaptive paraphrasing attacks, in part because they do not capture sufficient global context to effectively differentiate malicious text from benign. We address this gap by developing an approach for malicious sentence classification that is both context- and query-aware, which we then harden against paraphrasing through two adversarial training (AT) methods: feature-space robust learning and AT with simulated LLM-based paraphrasing. Moreover, we parametrize the AT variants to facilitate a smooth tradeoff between utility and attack robustness. In extensive experiments using IPI benchmarks we show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art defense baselines under both static and adaptive paraphrasing attacks while preserving high utility. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/tavia-liu/CAD.
Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) power platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, enabling rich interactions across text, images, and videos. Unlike text-only workloads, multimodal requests are inherently heterogeneous, differing by orders of magnitude in latency and memory footprint. Existing LLM serving systems, designed for homogeneous text workloads, struggle under this heterogeneity: large image and video requests monopolize GPU resources, causing severe head-of-line blocking and degrading the responsiveness of lightweight, latency-critical text queries. Recent multimodal serving systems mitigate this interference through disaggregation, isolating encoding and inference stages across GPUs. While effective at large scale, such designs introduce severe GPU underutilization in more practical, moderate-scale deployments. In response, we build RPS-Serve a modality-aware scheduling framework that leverages the extreme heterogeneity in multimodal workloads and introduces a simple abstraction: videos behave like rocks, images like pebbles, and text like sand. Then, it lets sand flow quickly through pebbles and rocks, maximizing GPU utilization while ensuring fast responsiveness for lightweight requests and controlled execution for heavier ones. To achieve this, RPS-Serve estimates the GPU admission cost of each request, classifies requests into rocks, pebbles, and sand using lightweight clustering, and applies priority-based scheduling with aging to balance performance across modalities. Evaluation across state-of-the-art MLLMs shows that RPS-Serve increases GPU utilization by 65% and reduces TTFT by up to 9.3x, on average across models, compared to disaggregation-based multi-modal systems.
Large AI models increasingly rely on distributed GPU execution, yet it remains unclear whether established anomaly detection methods transfer effectively to this setting. We introduce GF-Bench, a PyTorch-based framework for generating controlled failures in distributed GPU workloads, and a dataset produced with it. The framework supports extensible workload and fault-injection logic; based on this design, the current release targets failures visible in multi-GPU communication logs and provides 220 labeled two-GPU runs covering normal behavior, CUDA out-of-memory fail-stop faults, and persistent-straggler fail-slow faults. Using GF-Bench, we evaluate three sequence-based methods (DeepLog, LogAnomaly, and LogBERT) and the large language model (LLM)-based LogPrompt with in-context learning (ICL) and chain-of-thought (CoT) prompting strategies on parsed logs, and additionally evaluate LogPrompt on raw logs. On parsed inputs, no method reliably detects both failure classes, and the highest overall F1 score is 0.667. Raw inputs raise the overall F1 score of ICL-LogPrompt to 0.983, at 9.0x its average input-token usage and 8.9x its per-run cost. These results reveal a trade-off between effectiveness and efficiency: parsed inputs reduce LLM token use and inference cost but can discard the distributed execution context required for accurate failure detection. GF-Bench provides a reproducible basis for studying cost-efficient anomaly detection methods and can be extended to additional GPU workloads and failure types.

DEEPTHINK methods improve reasoning by generating, refining, and aggregating populations of candidate solutions, which enables strong performance on complex mathematical and scientific tasks. However, existing frameworks can still suffer from unreliable correctness signals during inference, which creates a population- enhancement bottleneck where deeper deliberation amplifies errors, suppresses correct minority solutions, and yields weak returns to additional compute. In this paper, we introduce a functional decomposition of DEEPTHINK systems and propose PRISM, a Process Reward Model (PRM)-guided inference algorithm that uses step-level verification to guide resampling, proposal acceptance, and solution aggregation. During refinement, PRISM uses PRM scores to guide population resampling and stochastic local refinement, which concentrates computation on higher-quality reasoning while preserving diversity. When paired with PRM- score-vote, a PRM-guided aggregation method, PRISM is competitive with or outperforms existing DEEPTHINK methods, reaching 90.0%, 75.4%, and 71.4% with gpt-oss-20b on AIME25, HMMT25, and GPQA Diamond, respectively, while exceeding gpt-oss-120b. Additionally, our analysis shows that PRISM produces consistent net-directional correction during refinement and maintains competitive accuracy when the initial population contains few correct candidates.
Safe reinforcement learning (RL) is commonly formalized as a Constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP), in which an agent maximizes expected reward while keeping its expected cumulative cost below a specified safety bound. Existing safe RL benchmarks predominantly report whether an algorithm is safe on average, following this expectation-based guarantee. We argue that this convention is insufficient to reliably characterize an algorithm's true safety: it fails to capture how often and how severely the safety bound is violated, whether this holds consistently across tasks and safety bounds, and whether training-time behavior is representative of behavior of the final converged policy. Therefore, we introduce (i) evaluation metrics for safe RL that address each of these concerns and in addition allow for aggregation across tasks and safety bounds. We furthermore define (ii) a safety tier system to systematically categorize and compare algorithms in terms of safety and reliability at both training and for a final policy. Using this framework, we provide (iii) an empirical safety evaluation across multiple safety navigation tasks. Our results show that aggregate metrics, distributional reporting, and task- and safety bound-specific results each reveal information the other metrics cannot. We therefore recommend reporting all three jointly, rather than compressing this information into a single value, as is common practice. We provide SafeRLEval, an open-source evaluation suite to support the reliable characterization of safety in future safe RL research.
A robot searching for the source of an odor must eventually answer a notably hard question: have I arrived? Near the source, concentration gradients homogenize, turbulence corrupts the signal, and a small robot often lacks the positional accuracy to map the plume. Here, we describe a lightweight remedy inspired by a World War II statistics conundrum: the German tank problem. To approximate German armament production, Allied analysts developed an estimator based on serial numbers from captured tanks. Analogously, we use the same procedure over sampled chemical sensor readings from a robot to create estimates for the peak concentration of an odor plume, and therefore the odor's source. Treating each sensor reading as an observation, our unbiased estimator needs only a running maximum and a sample counter. A confidence bound turns both numbers into a principled rule that the robot or UAV can use to determine whether it should keep searching for the odor source. We derive the estimator and its bound, demonstrate its sample efficiency, and examine its robustness even when its assumptions fail. Finally, we summarize the estimator's role as the termination criterion for olfactory navigation.
Over a series of seven papers, Andreas & Günther have introduced seven definitions of actual causation and have classified them as belonging to three different, competing, types of accounts: factual difference-making, counterfactual difference-making, and regularity-based. I show that their most recent -- factual difference-making -- definition instantiates all three types, thereby proving that these are distinctions without a difference. I further compare their novel account to the other six accounts on several crucial examples, revealing that this undermines all seven of their accounts.
AI agents use a large language model (LLM) to plan and act over many steps. Which model should an agent use, so that its tasks are completed reliably with the least energy, cost and time? We treat this as a multi-criteria decision problem in which comparisons per call can mislead: a task succeeds only if all its steps succeed, and failed attempts still use resources. We therefore compare models on resources per successfully completed task. We derive crossover task lengths at which two models exchange their efficiency ranking, determined by their per-step reliability and resource use. Each objective has its own crossover. Below the shortest crossover the less reliable model dominates, above the longest the more reliable one dominates, and in between both are Pareto-efficient and preferences decide. This supports a two-stage framework: a preference-free dominance screen, followed by a multi-criteria ranking of the efficient models, subject to reliability and feasibility constraints. We also give conditions under which this structure holds when reliability and resource use change during a task. In a pilot with 15 open-weight models on two synthetic agent tasks, with measured GPU energy, the predicted crossover fell within the observed range for 72 of the 88 observed crossovers. At 20 steps, a 3-billion-parameter model used a tenth of the energy of a 27-billion one per completed task; at 100 steps, a 1.7-billion model used almost four times as much as an 8-billion one. Smaller is greener only up to a task length that can be predicted.
