Exploiting Textual Semantics for Robust Cross-View Object Correspondence

Bing Fan, Yunhe Feng, Yan Huang, Heng Fan

原文摘要

Cross-view object correspondence (CVOC) aims to establish associations of the same target between query and search videos captured from different viewpoints. Existing methods often rely on visual cues for CVOC. Despite recent progress, these methods struggle in complicated scenarios with substantial viewpoint changes and appearance variations, due to lacking sufficient target information. Addressing this, we introduce TeSCo, a framework that exploits rich Textual Semantics of an object, in addition to its visual cues, for cross-view object Correspondence. Our key insight is, textual description of a target, by capturing diverse attributes such as category, texture, and color, provides viewpoint- and appearance-invariant semantics, which are complementary to visual cues and can hence enhance correspondence robustness in complicated scenes. Inspired by this, TeSCo first generates a textual expression of the target from the given query view using a vision-language model, and then extracts textual feature to enhance visual features for localization in the search view. To realize this, we introduce a text-conditioned cross-modal fusion (TCF) module that incorporates the textual feature into visual features with text-guided modulation, producing more robust multimodal target representation for object correspondence. Since not all textual cues are equally compatible with the target in current search-view frame, we propose an iterative textual feature refinement (ITFR) module that progressively adjusts textual feature using search-view information before the TCF module, enabling search-view-aware textual semantics to be fused into visual features and leading to better performance. In extensive experiments on Ego-Exo4D and HANDAL-X, TeSCo demonstrates state-of-the-art results and largely outperforms other models, validating its efficacy. Our code is released at https://github.com/VAIL-Fan/TeSCo.

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for mental-health support; yet prevailing evaluation methods--fluency metrics, preference tests, and generic dialogue benchmarks--fail to capture the clinically critical dimensions of psychotherapy. We introduce THERAPYGYM, a framework that evaluates and improves therapy chatbots along two clinical pillars: fidelity and safety. Fidelity is measured using the Cognitive Therapy Rating Scale (CTRS), implemented as an automated pipeline that scores adherence to CBT techniques over multi-turn sessions. Safety is assessed using a multi-label annotation scheme, covering therapy-specific risks (e.g., failing to address harm or abuse). To mitigate bias and unreliability in LLM-based judges, we further release THERAPYJUDGEBENCH, a validation set of 116 dialogues with 1,270 expert ratings for auditing and calibration against licensed clinicians. THERAPYGYM also serves as a training harness: CTRS and safety-based rewards drive RL with configurable patient simulations spanning diverse symptom profiles. Models trained in THERAPYGYM improve on expert ratings, with average CTRS rising from 0.10 to 0.60 (and 0.16 to 0.59 under LLM judges). Our work enables scalable development of therapy chatbots that are faithful to evidence-based practice and safer in high-stakes use.

Darwin Family: MRI-Trust-Weighted Evolutionary Merging for Training-Free Scaling of Language-Model Reasoning

原文摘要

We present Darwin Family, a framework for training-free evolutionary merging of large language models via gradient-free weight-space recombination. We ask whether frontier-level reasoning performance can be improved without additional training, by reorganizing latent capabilities already encoded in existing checkpoints. Darwin introduces three key ideas: (i) a 14-dimensional adaptive merge genome enabling fine-grained component- and block-level recombination; (ii) MRI-Trust Fusion, which adaptively balances diagnostic layer-importance signals with evolutionary search through a learnable trust parameter; and (iii) an Architecture Mapper that enables cross-architecture breeding between heterogeneous model families. Empirically, the flagship Darwin-27B-Opus achieves 86.9% on GPQA Diamond, ranking #6 among 1,252 evaluated models, and outperforming its fully trained foundation model without any gradient-based training. Across scales from 4B to 35B parameters, Darwin models consistently improve over their parents, support recursive multi-generation evolution, and enable a training-free evolutionary merge that combines Transformer- and Mamba-based components. Together, the Darwin Family demonstrates that diagnostic-guided evolutionary merging is a practical and reproducible alternative to costly post-training pipelines for reasoning-centric language models.

原文摘要

Facial Expression Recognition (FER) on optomyographic (OMG) smart glasses such as OCOsense enables privacy-preserving, camera-free affect sensing for health and well-being. Most FER systems are fully supervised, i.e., they rely either on hand-crafted expert features with classical machine learning, or on end-to-end deep models trained from labelled data. Both depend on large quantities of labelled expressions, which are costly to collect and limit deployment in real-world, personalized settings. We investigate Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) as a route to label-efficient FER on these glasses. We pretrain a Vision Transformer with a masked-autoencoder objective on unlabelled OCOsense recordings and finetune it for five-class FER under person-independent cross-validation. Across label budgets from 5% to 100%, pretraining consistently improves performance; with only 5% of the labels, the pretrained model outperforms the from-scratch model trained with all labels. Our results show that SSL pretraining is a practical way to reduce labelling cost for smart eyewear FER, and we discuss the implications for future personalization and continual adaptation.

Agents, Think Only When it Helps

Min-Seon Kim, Seungdong Yoa, Sanghyu Yoon, Ye Seul Sim, Suhee Yoon, Dongmin Kim, Jung-Eun Kim

原文摘要

LLM agent distillation transfers agentic capabilities to student models by training on complete teacher trajectories that typically interleave thoughts and actions. We question how critical thought supervision is for agents' ultimate action performance. To answer this, we disentangle their impacts by independently perturbing teacher thoughts and actions during distillation. On widely adopted agent benchmarks across model scales, altering or discarding thoughts has little effect on student performance. We find, however, that thought supervision becomes important when information about the thought is not disclosed in the corresponding action during training. By identifying such discrepant cases, our findings challenge the common practice of distilling entire teacher trajectories for LLM agents, and offer a new insight that thought supervision can be a discernible choice for efficiency depending on whether the information of thought is disclosed in the action.

From Type to Token: Petri Nets, Individual Token Philosophy, and Individualized Causal Effects

Fernando Delbianco, Fernando Tohmé, Gustavo Bodanza

原文摘要

Structural Causal Models and Bayesian Networks are the dominant framework for representing causal relations. They are fundamentally type-level formalisms since their estimands, Average Treatment Effects and Conditional Average Treatment Effects, are properties of distributions over populations, not of individual units. When treatment effects exhibit unbounded heterogeneity, these estimands collapse. What persists is the structural, token-level core of causation. We argue that Petri Nets under the Individual Token Philosophy are the natural representation of these token-level causal structures. We develop a formal translation from Bayesian Networks to Petri Nets, providing a two-layer account of individualized causality. The PN layer provides a structural representation of causal mechanisms that does not rest on distributional assumptions. In turn, a conformal prediction layer quantifies causal effects with finite-sample coverage guarantees. Together they constitute a complete account of individual causal effects.

TACT: A Pragmatic Approach to Qualitative Analysis with an AI Council

Rudrajit Choudhuri, Christian Bird, Carmen Badea, Anita Sarma

原文摘要

Qualitative data can tell software teams what their stakeholders need, yet rigorously analyzing thousands of qualitative responses takes expert time that few teams can afford or justify. Teams therefore often face a false choice: leave the responses unanalyzed, or hand them to a large language model and accept its interpretation and judgment. In this paper, we take a pragmatic approach to AI-assisted qualitative analysis and present TACT (Traceable AI Council for Thematic analysis), a procedure that enables such analysis at scale while keeping teams in control of interpretation and judgment. TACT comes in two variants: TACT-Lite, the core AI council procedure, and TACT-Full, which adds adversaries (models from other model families that critique each model's output) and a decision model that surfaces high-uncertainty code assignments. We evaluated TACT on an independent dataset of 256 Stack Overflow threads qualitatively coded by other researchers. Against their labels, TACT's candidate codebook achieved an F1 of 0.75-0.77 and its final coding an F1 of 0.71-0.72. On a held-out sample, agreement between our own manual coding and TACT's coding was Cohen's $κ$ of 0.79-0.85. TACT is also economical: model calls cost \$13.77 (TACT-Lite) to \$33.59 (TACT-Full) per 100 threads. Finally, drawing on our experience building and validating TACT, we identify pitfalls in AI-assisted qualitative analysis, describe safeguards to address them, and offer guidance for teams and researchers applying TACT in practice.

Reliability Engineering for AI Systems: Challenges, Methods, and Directions

Rong Pan, Yili Hong, Min Xie

原文摘要

AI reliability concerns whether an AI system performs its intended function dependably over a stated period and under stated operating conditions, with clear evidence. As these systems become more autonomous, this function should include more than only a correct output. Retrieval, memory, tool use, permissions, human oversight, and interactions among systems must operate consistently and safely, and, for a generative AI, so must the reasoning process that produces the output. Average benchmark accuracy only measures system capability; it does not quantify this broader reliability claim. This paper adapts established reliability engineering methods, from failure definitions and operational envelopes to FMEA, accelerated testing, field monitoring, and reliability growth, to AI systems. A four-level diagnostic framework classifies failures as component, operational-loop, agentic-conduct, or network and governance failures. Test, evaluation, verification, and validation (TEVV), sequential monitoring, and FRACAS create and refresh evidence. The SMART framework provides statistical guidance for measurement, analysis, assessment, and test planning, and the NIST's AI risk management framework provides organizational guidance for governance, evaluation, monitoring, and mitigation. Three cases are discussed to illustrate these programs. It is shown that while the established reliability engineering principles can still provide a usable foundation, new measurements and safety guardrails are urgently needed as these systems are self-evolving at a fast pace.

Quantifying Local and Global Fidelity of Nonlinear Embeddings

Henry Han

原文摘要

Dimension reduction rests on a claim: t-SNE and UMAP preserve local structure, PCA global structure. Our DLP curve is the share of each point's k nearest neighbors a map keeps. Corrected for chance, it gives L at k=10 and G over 30 to 50% of the data, local and global fidelity. At the midpoint the curve is provably a rank correlation of distances. The LG reversal test decides, with a stated error rate, which of two maps is local and which global. On twelve datasets of up to 1.38 million points, G agrees with established global scores at 0.84 and 0.93, and the area under R_NX at 0.22 and 0.30. The entity fidelity E, read at each point's entity size, predicts which entities a map loses beyond L and G where entity sizes differ. In an agent memory of one million passages, t-SNE and PCA cross at 150,000 passages (p=2.6e-5).

How Do Artificial Agents Make Decisions in Light of Visual Data?

Keyty Loza, Shayan Monadjemi

原文摘要

Vision-language models (VLMs) have demonstrated significant advances in reasoning with visual data, which is particularly important given that much of human knowledge is encoded visually in scientific articles and other sources. However, a gap remains in understanding how artificial agents, powered by VLMs, perceive and navigate decision-making under uncertainty in the presence of visual data. This study explores this gap by evaluating and analyzing autonomous decision-making processes. Building upon prior work in visualization literacy and decision theory, we conducted two complementary studies: one examining how agents perceive and quantify uncertainty encoded in visualizations, and another investigating how artificial agents make decisions based on visual data in the form of images. We analyzed perception accuracy and decision performance across models and visualization types. Our results show that GPT-4o demonstrates the highest accuracy in perceiving uncertainty in pie and bar charts among the tested models. For decision-making, autonomous agents showed the best alignment with rational decision theory when uncertainty was represented through circle charts, icon arrays, or text.

Combining Relevant Expert Knowledge Using Mixtures of Feedback Fuzzy Cognitive Maps

Olaoluwa Adigun, Akash Kumar Panda, Bart Kosko

原文摘要

A neuro-symbolic system should combine only relevant answers from expert agents or other knowledge sources. Using only relevant experts for a given input query becomes ever more important for accuracy and scalability as the knowledge network grows and connects ever more knowledge sources. We extend the standard definition of relevance from the legal theory of evidence: An answer is relevant if and only if it is both probative and material for the matter at hand given the knowledge available. We apply this relevancy scheme to mixing the feedback fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) of real or artificial experts. The expert FCM directed causal graphs mix or combine into a common knowledge network. We compare the equilibrium limit-cycle predictions or answers of the experts to the answers of the mixture FCM and then estimate the probative status of answers by their difference or variation. A new Bayes-like theorem de-mixes the knowledge mixture into corresponding posterior-like FCMs that also allow relevancy-based comparisons. The result is a final set of relevancy mixing weights that produces a relevancy-mixed FCM knowledge network for the given query. So different queries produce different relevancy-mixed FCMs. We demonstrate this relevancy approach using generated synthetic FCMs from an actual 13-node expert FCM that models the causes and feedbacks of ischemic-stroke risk.

Grounded but Not Immune: Confirmation Bias in Agent-as-a-judge

Drake Benjamin Brown, Khushbu Pahwa, Yubin Ge, Salvatore Romeo, Akhil Agnihotri, Yi Zhang, Xiaofei Ma, Daniele Bonadiman

原文摘要

Evaluating open-ended agent tasks increasingly falls to an Agent-as-a-Judge: an evaluator handed tools and the agent's full trajectory so it can verify a result against the environment. The premise is that a judge that gathers its own evidence should be grounded by it. We show that this grounding does not immunize the judge against confirmation bias: a single false pre-screening note, attributed to an authority and carrying no evidential bearing on the correct verdict, overturns up to 40% of a tool-using judge's correct verdicts across four judges and five datasets, even though the judge collects decisive evidence. The shift is driven by specific properties of the cue. We treat this cue as a controlled diagnostic of confirmation bias rather than an adversarial attack. Our central contribution is to explain how confirmation bias changes the judge's behavior in a trajectory. We classify changes in judge behavior and attribute changes to one of three failure modes: over-trust (verify, conclude correctly, then defer), hallucination (fabricate support for the flip), and under-investigation (stop at the first corroborating signal). For the two Claude judges, the failure is predominantly over-trust (67-75% of harmful flips), while smaller judges have error modes spread across all three. Lightweight mitigations blunt but never remove the bias.

Quantifying Trait-State Hierarchy in EEG Foundation Model and Signal Processing Embeddings

Anusha Madapura, Aditya Kommineni, Shrikanth Narayanan

原文摘要

Electroencephalography (EEG) measures brain activity through recording electrical potentials of the scalp. EEG recordings capture two distinct sets of characteristics in the signal: (1) \emph{Traits} -- information that remains relatively constant over the course of a recording session, such as subject identity, age, and sex; (2) \emph{States} -- signatures that encode responses to external stimuli, including visual, auditory, and motor information. There is limited understanding of how different EEG modeling features (signal processing and foundation models) encode state and trait characteristics. In this work, we quantify state- and trait-level features captured by EEG embeddings using a hierarchy metric and kNN purity on Brain-Computer Interface dataset trials, and find that a majority of EEG features form a macro-trait hierarchy (embeddings form trait-level clusters with micro-states within). Our linear probe results indicate that this hierarchy structure leads to suboptimal state distinguishability, negatively impacting BCI performance of EEG foundation models. To mitigate this, we explore normalization techniques that reduce trait-specific information in embeddings and provide a $\sim$ 10\% improvement in balanced accuracy for state classification. Additionally, we observe that when fine-tuning models for downstream state decoding, embedding spaces transform from macro-trait to macro-state hierarchies, which in turn lead to better state decoding.

Attributing Agent Failures to Their History Needs an Executed Counterfactual: Toward a Reporting Standard

Egor Pakhomov, Erik Nijkamp

原文摘要

Published explanations of why long-horizon agents fail are commonly taxonomies labeled over completed trajectories: a judge reads a transcript and names the failure. We argue that a claim attributing an agent's behavior to its history should carry intervention-verified evidence, per instance or via a validated estimator: freeze an executable mid-trajectory state, alter only the history the agent sees, and continue - executed rather than inferred from the transcript, at a state whose restoration has been measured, with a replay certificate matched to the estimand. Each of the four manipulation classes we name has a precedent, and several methods already execute interventions from checkpoints, re-executed prefixes or recorded conversation states (for example DoVer, REFLECT, Min et al., Who&When Pro, Causal Agent Replay), but none reports a measured replay certificate. Two cautionary measurements, neither applying the standard, follow: a carrier taxonomy whose "concentration" could not be separated from benchmark construction (adjusted odds ratio 1.15, interval crossing 1), and hash-identical snapshots that, restored into identically seeded processes, agreed with one another in 24 of 24 states while differing from the live continuation in 9 and 20 of 24. Restoring the captured position of a random stream made all 24 agree with the live run.

VIPBench: A Human-Aligned Benchmark for Voice Identity Perception in the Age of Voice Cloning

Xudong Tang, Matthew Groh

原文摘要

Speaker-recognition benchmarks test how accurately a model recovers the speaker label of a recording, treating voice identity as a property of the person who produced it. However, these benchmarks do not evaluate how humans perceive voice identity. Whether a listener hears two voices as the same person has consequences for intellectual property rights, cybersecurity, and everyday life. We introduce the Voice Identity Perception benchmark (VIPBench), which contains 124,876 same-or-different judgments from 1,290 listeners on 9,800 recording pairs from 100 public figures. The pairs include real recordings, voice clones generated by a text-to-speech system, and morphs between two speakers' voices. We also define four tasks that evaluate the alignment between speaker-representation models and human identity perception. The first two tasks measure how well a model's similarity score predicts the proportion of listeners who respond "same" and the majority response. The other two measure whether a model and listeners find the same speaker pairs similar, and whether a model's relationship to listener judgments holds equally for real and synthetic recordings. We evaluate eleven publicly available speech models. Listener judgments diverge from speaker labels most often for voice clones: in 41% of responses, listeners judged a clone and a real recording of the same speaker to be different people. No model reaches the noise ceiling; the best model explains 61% of the explainable variance. Models trained with speaker labels align with listeners better than self-supervised models do, yet a model with a 12% error rate on speaker labels aligns with listeners as well as models with error rates below 2%. VIPBench enables the evaluation of speaker models against human perception on real, cloned, and morphed speech, and our results motivate training speaker models directly on listener judgments.

Route to Remember: Adaptive Memory Selection for LLM Agents

Zeyu Fang, Jun Yin, Yongsheng Mei, Xu Han, Chaitali Joshi, Zhongkai Sun, Jie Hao, Bin Guo 等 11 位作者

原文摘要

The memory of production agents is increasingly becoming a bottleneck and is built almost exclusively from text: key points are extracted from out-of-limit context and retrieved into context at query time. Therefore, every new query incurs an additional cost that grows with the accumulated history. Weight memory is a complementary alternative that internalizes knowledge into model parameters and answers with no context at all, and has recently proven effective in self-evolving agents for internalizing skills and behaviors. However, its application in episodic and semantic memory, such as user-specific facts, remains comparatively unexplored, and a gap remains between earlier attempts at weight memory and text-based systems regarding recall performance. We study how to make weight memory competitive as a long-term factual store by applying on-policy self-distillation (OPSD). It trains a context-free student from a teacher, which is the same model conditioned on the user's memory, together with a verify-then-regenerate router that lets weight and text memory each cover the queries they handle best. On the HaluMem benchmark, OPSD matches or surpasses strong text-memory baselines, including full-context prompting and retrieval systems, while reading fewer tokens per query. We further conduct an extensive study that characterizes the behavior of weight memory and analyzes how different training recipes affect its performance. As agent harnesses move toward persistent, multi-session deployments, these results position weight memory as a practical, low-cost component of agent memory and provide insights into feasible training and evaluation protocols for combining it with retrieval.

Spatio-Temporal Multi-Order Interaction for Video Recognition

Kevin D. Nguetche, Lilian Hollard, Eric Granger, Marco Pedersoli

原文摘要

Many temporal approaches for video recognition rely on explicit cross-channel aggregation projections, which have quadratic complexity in the number of channels, introducing significant computational overhead. In addition, the spatio-temporal representation used for video recognition is biased either toward local order interactions (for CNNs) or toward global order interactions (for transformers). Starting from the multi-order spatial representation of MogaNet, our method introduces two complementary contributions to tackle these problems. First, for the temporal modelling, we introduce parallel multi-order processing with depthwise-only convolutions and implicit gating-based aggregation, which is linear in the number of channels, inducing a considerable computational reduction. Second, we propose a dual interaction between spatial and temporal dimensions, which allows a better spatio-temporal representation without increasing the computational cost. By combining these two contributions, our proposed VideoMogaNet achieves performance on par with or better than state-of-the-art action recognition approaches across multiple video benchmarks (UCF101, HMDB51, Kinetics-400, Diving48), while considerably reducing the cost of the temporal branch.

Assurance-Conditioned Continuous Authorization for Autonomous AI Agents

Mehdi Shajari

原文摘要

Autonomous software agents can act through tools, delegate work, and change their models or execution environments while earlier authorizations remain in flight. We present Assurance-Conditioned Continuous Authorization (ACCA), an approach designed to be harness-independent, for maintaining operational authority according to currently justified assurance. It distinguishes evidence validity from contextual applicability, derives assurance claims from eligible evidence, and resolves a multidimensional effective-authority envelope within a principal-declared ceiling and applicable policy. A typed dependency graph supports selective re-evaluation of authorization-relevant changes. An authority epoch changes when effective authority changes; a distinct optional authorization-basis version supports revalidation of action-specific authorization conditions. Protected effect-time enforcement can reject stale actions before a consequential resource change, subject to the available commit mechanism. A compositional Domain Governance Profile expresses domain-specific semantics without granting authority. Controlled scenario tests implemented as a regression suite using a trading profile exercise default-deny rules, evidence-conditioned contraction and recovery, policy divergence, selective non-response, and stale-action rejection at a local gateway before the simulated-broker boundary. The study establishes implementation-level evidence in one domain, not a cross-domain guarantee of harmful-behavior prevention.

Fractional Power-of-Two Quantization for Efficient and Effective Multiplier-Free LLM Inference

Sunghyun Wee, Geunjae Choi, Hyeonjin Kim, Suyoung Kim, Nojun Kwak

原文摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) demand efficient inference, where the multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations in linear projections dominate compute and energy cost. Post-training quantization (PTQ) reduces this cost by mapping weights and activations to low-bit integers. Power-of-Two (PoT) weight quantization promises efficient multiplier-free LLM inference via shift-add logic, but suffers significant accuracy degradation at low bit-widths due to its coarse base-2 quantization grid. We introduce Fractional PoT (FPoT), a base-$\sqrt{2}$ (half-octave) fractional PoT grid that achieves practical 4-bit weight quantization while preserving a fully integer shift-add datapath. The method combines (i) the base-$\sqrt{2}$ weight grid with uniform integer activations, (ii) a calibration-time grid-alignment refinement absorbed into the static per-channel scale, and (iii) a lightweight 1-adder $\sqrt{2}$ approximation whose error is absorbed during weight calibration via approximate-grid quantization, yielding a processing element (PE) with significantly fewer gates than a 4-bit integer multiplier. On Llama-3-8B with 4-bit weight and activation quantization, FPoT improves zero-shot commonsense reasoning performance by 8.72% relative to the PoT baseline, while maintaining performance close to the uniform integer baseline, with only a negligible 0.4%p degradation. These results hold across various configurations spanning seven models and three bit-widths. Furthermore, FPoT can be integrated with state-of-the-art LLM PTQ methods, demonstrating framework-agnostic applicability.

OTAP: Structure-Aware Optimal Transport for Evaluating Planning and Execution in Agent Trajectories

Babak Barazandeh, Subhabrata Majumdar, George Michailidis

原文摘要

Large language model agents solve tasks by generating trajectories that interleave planning, tool calls, and intermediate results. Current evaluation metrics reduce such a trajectory to a binary success flag, compare it against a reference by exact matching, or delegate judgment to another language model. A success flag cannot distinguish sound solutions from lucky ones, nor explain why runs fail. Exact matching penalizes valid plans reordered or decomposed differently. We reframe trajectory evaluation as a distance between the agent's execution graph and a set of valid solution graphs, and instantiate it via an unbalanced fused Gromov-Wasserstein transport problem over attributed dependency graphs. The resulting score, termed OTAP (Optimal Transport for Agentic Planning), is a normalized discrepancy score. Its idealized, globally minimized entropy-free objective is invariant to dependency-preserving relabelings of a fixed graph and has a redundant-insertion sensitivity analysis under stated assumptions. Its unbalanced marginals handle missing or hallucinated steps without forcing a match; granularity invariance remains an open problem that soft coupling mitigates only in part. On controlled perturbations and three public benchmarks, OTAP separates valid from invalid trajectories in a regime where semantics-only metrics score below chance. Its performance is encouraging across these settings, while controlled edge-noise experiments reveal sensitivity to dependency extraction. Where a formal verifier exists, strict surface metrics predict validity better than OTAP does, which places OTAP in open-ended domains where no verifier is available. A blinded study of 236 trajectories finds the strongest agreement with OTAP among the six compared metrics. Structure-aware baselines achieve higher clean-graph AUROC, while OTAP has the smallest absolute AUROC decline under the tested edge noise.

ViBench 2.0: A Benchmark for Long-Horizon Software Building

Daniel Furman, Preeya Kirani, Ibrahim Sheikh, Zhen Li, Peter Zhong, Michele Catasta

原文摘要

On Replit, our agentic engineering platform, users now build entire products without writing code, through successive feature requests to an agent. Yet existing coding benchmarks evaluate single, fully specified tasks, and many are near saturation. We introduce ViBench 2.0, a benchmark for long-horizon software building that we use to select our platform's models. Its 17 full-stack web products, modeled on widely used software, grow over 241 feature requests and are judged only when finished, as a user would judge them: a browser agent runs 544 test plans, and a build passes only if every plan does, under a grading protocol validated to keep this strict score reliable. Evaluating nine models, we find a reliability gap: the three strongest pass up to 98% of test plans yet deliver a fully working product in at most 65% of builds, and no open-weight model delivers one. The gap is closing fast: across three releases of one model family, pass@1 on the public products rises from 3% to 53% while the cost per build falls by more than half. We release eight products with the harness and grader, hold out nine, and report lessons from production use.

Hybrid Spark: Adaptive Speculative Decoding That Lets the Content Choose the Drafter

Ekagra Ranjan, Bharat Venkitesh

原文摘要

Speculative decoding (SD) speeds up large language model (LLM) serving, but its gain depends on the workload's \emph{shape}, such as batch size and context length, and on its \emph{content}. A model-based drafter proposes a short block on any content, while a model-free drafter such as n-gram lookup proposes long copies at almost no cost when the output repeats its input, as in code editing. Adaptive verification spends a batch-wide verification budget on the draft tokens most likely to be accepted, but it supports only one model-based drafter. Model-free drafters provide no per-token confidence, so they cannot take part in budget allocation, and deployments must either fix one drafter or split their GPUs between drafters. We present \sys, a framework that runs a model-based and a model-free drafter on every step and gives each request the better of their chains, within adaptive verification and entirely on the GPU, which keeps asynchronous scheduling intact. The key idea is a price per verified draft token: the goodput that slot would earn elsewhere in the batch. Once the model-free drafter's tokens carry calibrated acceptance estimates, fit once on general text, this price puts both drafters' chains on one scale. Instantiated with \dspark and an n-gram drafter in vLLM, \sys achieves 1.10--1.62\x the output throughput of \dspark on code editing at batch size~4 and 1.04--1.27\x at batch size~128, while staying at 0.97--1.01\x of it on chat at temperature~0. A single deployment can therefore serve both workloads.

PolicyMem: Geometric Policy Memory for LLM Governance

Yuanchen Bei, Zhengzhang Chen, Yanjun Zhao, Haoyu Wang, Hanghang Tong, Haifeng Chen

原文摘要

Effective LLM governance extends beyond detecting unsafe responses to guiding their correction through closed-loop assessment, revision, and verification. Learning-based guards provide strong semantic discrimination but often leave policy knowledge implicit in trained parameters, limiting its explicit reuse across stages. Programmable guardrails make policies explicit through prompts and workflows, but rely heavily on manual engineering to operationalize them. This motivates explicit policy representations that are both learnable and reusable across governance operations. To this end, we introduce PolicyMem, a geometric policy memory that compiles natural-language policies into learnable low-rank subspaces for reuse across governance stages. A policy assessor projects query-response representations onto these subspaces, producing evidence that directly mediates safety judgments and policy attribution. A response rewriter uses the implicated policies to revise unsafe responses, with the same assessor re-evaluating the revised responses. Beyond inference, the same memory constructs training data from model-generated candidates to supervise the rewriter without external teacher calls. Across five widely used benchmarks, PolicyMem achieves the best average unsafe-behavior detection performance among representative baselines while supporting effective policy attribution, rewriting, and post-intervention assessment through the shared policy memory.

Hyperparameter Transfer in Graph Neural Networks

Gage DeZoort, Boris Hanin

原文摘要

The performance of deep learning models crucially depends on the settings of hyperparameters like learning rate, initialization scale, and weight decay. Hyperparameter transfer aims to make near-optimal hyperparameter settings consistent across model scale, so that large models can be optimized by proxy tuning their smaller, cheaper-to-optimize counterparts. While transfer principles are well-studied in the context of dense neural networks in language and vision tasks, they remain comparatively under-explored for graph neural networks (GNNs). We develop and validate a transfer parameterization for GNNs trained with SGD, Adam, and AdamW. Through theoretical scaling analyses and controlled experiments, we show that the proposed parameterization yields stable feature updates, learning rate transfer, and improved performance as width and depth increase. For SGD, we identify graph-dependent first-layer correction factors and show that their use can accelerate early training in graphs with sparse bag-of-words inputs. For Adam, we explore how different message passing normalizations affect early- and late-training transfer behavior, illustrating the importance of message passing normalization and advocating for an associated hyperparameter. For AdamW, we adapt a parameterization that allows for the joint transfer of weight decay and learning rate. Together, these results provide a practical recipe for scaling GNNs across a variety of learning tasks and training scenarios.

A latent control model for realistic rodent motion

原文摘要

The development of embodied models of animal behavior is a major goal of the neuro-AI community. Embodied models will enhance our ability to make direct comparisons between biological and artificial agents. To make such comparisons effective, though, we need embodied models that actually move like animals. Previous work has developed virtual animal bodies and techniques for training realistic motion through imitation. However, to date, there is no system for embodied animal modeling that produces natural movements both during trained goal-directed behavior, and during exploration driven by random generation. Here, we introduce Simulated Control via Augmented Motor Priors for Embodied Reinforcement learning (SCAMPER), a system for training an embodied virtual rat model, enabling natural movements during both goal-directed behavior and random exploration. SCAMPER uses a variational architecture with two distinct priors, a motion prior for control and a behavior prior for exploration. We show that combining both of these priors allows SCAMPER to generate realistic behavior during exploration and exploit the task structure effectively. SCAMPER can also learn from sparse rewards as a result of the diverse movements induced by the behavior prior, allowing the system to model realistic sparse-reward tasks from experimental neuroscience. Altogether, SCAMPER provides the neuro-AI community with an effective new system for training embodied models of rodents on realistic tasks.

Recon: Reconstruction-Guided Reasoning Synthesis for User Modeling

Alan Zhu, Mihran Miroyan, Carolyn Wang, Andrew Zhou, Lisa Dunlap, Narges Norouzi, Joseph E. Gonzalez

原文摘要

User modeling aims to use language models (LMs) to mimic an individual's behavior from a corpus of past context-action pairs (e.g., conversation turns), enabling the simulation of users in settings like behavioral science, human-AI collaboration, and market research. Recent approaches augment these corpora with synthesized reasoning traces, typically generated by conditioning on both context and action. However, action-conditioned traces are post-hoc rationalizations and need not reflect the user's underlying decision process. We propose Recon, which uses action reconstruction to score reasoning traces by their predictive power: given a context and candidate reasoning, a reconstruction model predicts the action, and reconstruction fidelity determines reasoning quality. Across four domains, Recon achieves a 54.7% win rate over Backward Synthesis, a standard post-hoc rationalization baseline. Further, we find that training a reasoning synthesis model with rewards derived from Recon improves downstream user modeling performance, achieving a win rate of up to 70.0% over baselines. We further show that Recon-synthesized reasoning transfers across models, and improves user modeling beyond the reconstruction model. Our work demonstrates that post-hoc rationalization is insufficient for reasoning synthesis, and that useful and interpretable reasoning should naturally elicit the action from the context.

Lattice Deduction Transformers

原文摘要

We introduce the Lattice Deduction Transformer (LDT), a recurrent transformer that approximates logically sound deduction by projecting its latent state through a lattice between forward passes. We train on-policy in a process that mirrors deduction in a search-based constraint solver and supervise training via a domain-agnostic approximation of the set of solution candidates based on abstract interpretation. An $800$K-parameter LDT outperforms prior small recurrent reasoners on Sudoku-Extreme with under $2\%$ of their estimated training FLOPs, solving $99.999\%$ of the $422{,}786$ test puzzles. The model is nearly always sound, in that it gives a wrong answer for $4$ of $1.27$M puzzle evaluations, and otherwise returns a correct answer or abstains. A $1.8$M-parameter LDT variant reaches $99.8\%$ accuracy on Maze-Hard. Our code is available at github.com/lcrh/lattice-deduction-transformers.

Trustworthy RAG: An Evaluation Agent for Detecting Misinformation and Knowledge Poisoning in Generative AI Systems

Balkrishna Giri, Md Toufique Hasan, Jussi Rasku, Muhammad Waseem, Pekka Abrahamsson

原文摘要

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) grounds Large Language Model (LLM) outputs in external knowledge, but RAG systems usually trust whatever they retrieve, creating a Security-Reliability Gap: high semantic relevance does not guarantee factual truth. Adversaries exploit this through knowledge poisoning, inserting malicious documents to cause targeted misinformation. We propose an Evaluation Agent, middleware that combines Natural Language Inference (NLI) factual verification, a five-signal poison detector with relevance-weighted aggregation, and a Trust Index T = 0.4 F + 0.35 C + 0.25 (1 - P ) with a non-linear dampener for high-contamination contexts. On TruthfulQA with Llama 3.3 70B, the agent reaches 91% accuracy and 100% precision, with 100% recall on instruction injection, while in-place edits, such as entity swaps, remain hard to detect. Across three LLMs the Trust Index stays discriminative, with a Receiver Operating Characteristic Area Under the Curve (ROC-AUC) of 0.73 to 0.81; generation style matters more than model size, and per-LLM threshold calibration restores baseline competitive accuracy, whereas a weaker FEVER result shows that cross-dataset generalization requires domain-specific calibration. In a software-engineering use case, a secure-coding assistant over guidance from the Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP) Top 10 and the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE), the agent reliably blocks instruction injection of unsafe advice (F1 92%), while contradiction and subtle semantic weakening remain hard. Throughout, the agent measures detection of poisoned context before generation, not whether the LLM adopts the injected misinformation. We release the proposed approach, attack generator, and experimental artifacts at the link: https://github.com/GPT-Laboratory/TrustworthyRAG.

Verified but Vacuous: Three Failure Surfaces of LLM-Driven Verified Code Generation

原文摘要

What should ``verified'' mean when evaluating LLM-generated code? Many existing pipelines report a single verification number. We argue this collapses three distinct properties measured in a conditional audit sequence: verifier acceptance (Surface A), \emph{syntactic specification binding (Surface B: does the proof obligation bind to the spec?), and \emph{semantic specification fidelity} (Surface C: does the spec capture the informal requirement?). Two empirical demonstrations show the surfaces separate. \textbf{First ($A \neq B$), via Li@Opus (a same-model reproduction of \citet{li2025dafny}'s Dafny-as-intermediate-representation (IR) pipeline under Claude Opus 4.7) on three Python benchmarks}: it reaches \textbf{99.1\% verifier acceptance} on HumanEval while only \textbf{1.9\%} carry a certificate binding to a spec-defined predicate or function. \textbf{Second ($B \neq C$), via VCG on two Rust benchmarks}: we use VCG (which is our own in-house Dafny-as-intermediate pipeline) on Rust because the Rust target lets us enforce fully-verifiable output (every component ships as a Dafny certificate, ensures-binding gate passing by construction). Even inside that construction, \textbf{11.48\% (MBPP-Rust) and 14.82\% (VeriContest LC slice) of structurally-verified samples still fail hidden tests}. On the LC slice of VeriContest, \textbf{VCG's reported End2End rate is 7.79\% (535/6870).} The cited external rates are 5.51\% (GPT-5.5) and 1.88\% (single-shot Opus 4.7). These give descriptive differences of 2.3 percentage points and 4.14$\times$, respectively; task-budget, repair and harness differences prevent a matched-performance claim.

Benchmarking Pretrained Molecular Embedding Models For Molecular Representation Learning

Mateusz Praski, Jakub Adamczyk, Wojciech Czech

原文摘要

Pretrained molecular embedding models spanning graph neural networks, text transformers, and hybrid architectures have been widely used in drug discovery, yet no large-scale, rigorous comparison of their representations existed. We evaluated 28 models across 25 classification datasets under a controlled framework using hierarchical Bayesian Bradley-Terry statistical testing. All neural models except CheMeleon failed to outperform the classical ECFP count fingerprint; CheMeleon was the only model rated as better. However, further testing on external validation datasets, based on scaffold cross-validation and a Bayesian hierarchical correlated t-test, revealed no definite advantage of either embedding method. As a practical takeaway, we recommend evaluating both ECFP fingerprints and CheMeleon embeddings in novel QSAR/QSPR studies. Overall, in the context of all neural networks evaluated, these results also challenge the perceived progress in molecular representation learning and highlight the need for rigorous evaluation standards in the field.
