Qubrio: High-Performance Quantum Compilation via Multi-Agent LLM Collaboration

原文摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) offer an adaptable alternative to traditional quantum compilation heuristics, which bottleneck progress by demanding costly manual redesigns whenever hardware evolves. However, naive single-pass LLM approaches fail under the unique challenges introduced by quantum compilation. We introduce Qubrio, a practical agentic framework that significantly reduces heuristic redesigns through a three-level decomposition. By (1) partitioning programs into sequential operation stages, (2) deploying specialized agents for placement, routing and optimization, and (3) using disaggregated feedback for precise error correction, our system reliably navigates complex physical constraints. Beyond serving as a direct compiler, our LLM framework also uncovers novel strategies that facilitate convoy-style shuttling, substantially enhancing hardware concurrency without sacrificing fidelity. We further integrate these strategies into the previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) compiler, recovering a significant fraction of the LLM's performance advantages. On realistic workloads, our compiler achieves significant improvements in hardware runtime and program fidelity over the SOTA baseline PowerMove, seamlessly adapting to new hardware capabilities. Qubrio features an open user interface for practical use, and its code is publicly available at https://github.com/crosaa/Qubrio.

Gated Against One Model, Open to the Next: Option-Only Solvability in Legal Multiple-Choice Benchmarks

Volodymyr Ovcharov

原文摘要

Multiple-choice benchmarks are graded on whether a model picks the right option, not on whether it needed the question. Measuring that gap takes care: a model answering A to most items scores above chance wherever the key sits at A, and reads as recognition when it is not. We measure it on UA-JudgeExam: 11,990 four-option items with official keys, published by Ukraine's Higher Qualification Commission of Judges. Shown the options and no question, Claude Haiku 4.5 scores 0.383 against chance, and the leak is concentrated: 11.8% of items are answered blind on all eight option orders, against 0.2 items expected by chance. It is not quotation: search over 280,059 editions of Ukrainian legislation recovers 0.128. Gating those out retains 8,128 items, on which the gating model itself now scores 0.204, while GPT-5.6, which took no part in the selection, still answers 0.515 of them with the question hidden. Scoring eighteen held-out models from eight vendors on the whole set and subtracting each one's position habit, four keep a sizeable excess: GPT-5.6 (+0.265), Gemini 3.1 Pro (+0.240), GPT-5.4 (+0.105), Sonnet 4.6 (+0.081); the rest stay within 0.031, and probes find no recall of the public bank behind it. Without the correction Llama 3.1 8B (0.292 blind, A on 92% of items) would read as a leaker. The gate does select something real: on the items it rejected, eleven of twelve models score 0.518-0.789, every interval clear of what the same model scores on the items it kept. But that signal is one model's, and filtering on it does not transfer upward. Rewriting distractors instead overshoots to 0.168, below chance and as exploitable. The same probe on LEXam returns chance: every option there points into the stem, none longer than 33 characters. Item format decides whether the problem can arise; capability decides how much is extracted. We release the corpus, predictions and harness.

VeriCypher: Named-Entity Verification for GraphRAG via Text-to-Cypher Generation

Anton Gusarov, Anastasia Volkova, Valentin Khrulkov, Andrey Kuznetsov, Evgenii Maslov, Ivan Oseledets

原文摘要

Knowledge graph question answering has traditionally focused on Resource Description Framework (RDF) graphs, SPARQL queries, and triple-based representations. Labeled Property Graphs (LPGs), however, pose a different challenge for LLM-based query generation: executable Cypher queries must align with schema structure, traversal direction, property keys, and literal entity values. This motivated us to introduce VeriCypher, an LLM-based text-to-Cypher framework for question answering over LPGs. It combines query generation conditioned on Cypher-like graph schema summaries with runtime execution, LLM-based query evaluation, and iterative correction where the central mechanism is named-entity verification: the system extracts node labels, relationship patterns, property keys, and literal values from generated queries, checks them against the target graph and schema, and turns mismatches into correction instructions for the next generation step. We evaluate VeriCypher on the CypherBench benchmark across multiple domains and LLM backbones. Compared with an LLM baseline, this method consistently improves answer correctness and query robustness. Ablation results further show that named-entity verification helps correct hallucinated schema elements and entity values, supporting more reliable LLM-based question answering over heterogeneous property graphs.

Beyond Binary Detection: Type-Aware Hallucination Analysis and Hierarchical Detection in Financial Question Answering

Xiongyu Chen, Sizhen Zhu, Zhuoer Wang

原文摘要

Large language models are increasingly used to answer questions over financial filings, where an unfaithful answer can mislead investment, compliance, or client decisions. Hallucination detectors are a common safeguard, but they are usually evaluated with a single binary score that reveals neither which kinds of errors analysesed nor why. This paper studies hallucination detection on PHANTOM, a long-context benchmark built from SEC filings, at the level of hallucination type. We first analyze 15,443 paired hallucinated and faithful answers without any detector and find that hallucinated answers are more than twice as long as faithful ones, and that lexical grounding separates the two classes only because faithful answers are bimodal. We then generate hallucinations in nine financially motivated categories, confirm each with a separate verification pass, and diagnose an LLM-based detector on 4,086 usable examples. Generation success varies from 66.3% to 100% across categories. The detector reaches 80.2% binary accuracy but only 44.7% subtype accuracy, never assigns two of the nine categories, and misses between 5.3% and 46.8% of hallucinations depending on category; these misses are unrelated to input length but rise with how far an answer departs from the correct one. Guided by this diagnosis, we propose a two-stage hierarchical detector that first decides whether an answer is hallucinated and then assigns a subtype, raising binary accuracy to 95.6% and subtype accuracy to 56.1%. The results show that type-level evaluation exposes detector weaknesses that aggregate metrics conceal.

The 3-Tier Integrated Technology Risk Model for Occupational Safety and Health

Ramiro Pesina, Ashish Madkaikar

原文摘要

This paper presents the 3-Tier Integrated Technology Risk Model, a progressive framework for Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) management that integrates Job Safety Analysis (JSA), dynamic risk assessment using leading and lagging indicators, and predictive analytics powered by Large Language Models (LLMs). The model provides organizations with a structured pathway to evolve from static, reactive safety practices to a sophisticated, predictive safety paradigm. Each tier builds upon the previous one, creating a comprehensive, data-driven approach that enables just-in-time training and preemptive risk mitigation.

KathDB-FAO: Optimizing Multimodal Queries through Operator Grouping and Code Reuse

Guorui Xiao, Douglas Brown, Artur Borycki, Magdalena Balazinska

原文摘要

Advances in multimodal large language models (multimodal LLMs) allow data systems to answer analytical queries over text and images alongside relational tables, but at a significant cost for large-scale data. Existing systems reduce this cost through rewrite rules written in advance, which cannot use the logic of an individual query or the semantics of the data it processes. To address this challenge, we design, implement, and evaluate KathDB-FAO, a query evaluation system over multimodal data. KathDB-FAO decomposes a complex query into an execution plan of fine-grained steps, which we call Function-as-Operators (FAOs). To reduce execution cost, it searches for subsets of these FAOs to implement together as one function, enabling query-specific optimizations that make fewer model calls. Synthesizing these functions with a frontier model has its own cost, yet we observe that synthesized FAOs often recur across queries. To further reduce plan generation cost, KathDB-FAO uses pre-built functions and reuses functions synthesized for earlier queries. On SemBench and an additional workload, KathDB-FAO achieves quality comparable to the strongest competing system while reducing end-to-end cost per query by 76% on average.

Metamorphic Testing for Evaluating Robustness of Sentiment Analysis Models

Sowjanya Karanam, Jayanth Bhargav

原文摘要

Machine learning systems are challenging to test using traditional software testing methods because their behavior is learned from data rather than explicitly programmed. This challenge is particularly significant in natural language processing (NLP), where small input variations can lead to unexpected model behavior. Conventional evaluation metrics, such as accuracy and F1-score, often fail to capture such inconsistencies. Metamorphic testing addresses this limitation by evaluating expected relationships between original and transformed inputs. With the increasing prevalence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and language-based AI systems, the need for systematic robustness testing has become even more pronounced. Motivated by this growing need, this paper presents a lightweight, batch-based metamorphic testing approach for evaluating the robustness of such systems. In particular, we consider sentiment analysis as a representative NLP task and evaluate a pretrained classifier under four transformations: synonym replacement, typo injection, word-order variation, and negation. Using consistency score, flip accuracy, and confidence change, we identify strengths in handling semantic variations and vulnerabilities to textual noise and logical transformations. These findings highlight the value of metamorphic testing in identifying behavioral inconsistencies beyond conventional performance metrics and demonstrate its potential as a systematic framework for evaluating the robustness of language-based AI systems and guiding performance improvements before deployment.

Efficient Factorized Volume Synthesis with Lifted Inter-Slice Feature Trajectories

Xinhe Zhang, Yuyang Zhang, Pengfei Jin, Arnau Marin-Llobet, Na Li, Quanzheng Li

原文摘要

High-resolution 3D medical image generation remains challenging because fully volumetric models are computationally expensive, while efficient 2D slice generators often fail to preserve anatomical consistency across the third dimension. We propose LiFT, a framework for Lifted inter-slice Feature Trajectories that factorizes 3D volume synthesis into per-slice image generation and inter-slice trajectory learning. Rather than using a fully volumetric synthesis backbone, LiFT treats a volume as an ordered trajectory in feature space, capturing how anatomical structures appear, transform, and disappear across depth. We demonstrate the LiFT framework in both unconditional and conditional settings. In unconditional generation, a tri-planar drifting loss matches feature distributions between generated and real volumes across three orthogonal planes; in paired translation, a bidirectional $z$-context mixer trained with paired target supervision supplies through-plane coherence while preserving per-slice fidelity. We evaluate LiFT on BraTS 2023 for unconditional and missing-modality MR synthesis, and on SynthRAD2023 for MR-to-CT translation. LiFT achieves competitive image quality while retaining the efficiency of predominantly 2D synthesis, operating up to $390\times$ faster than a volumetric diffusion baseline and consistently improving through-plane coherence through explicit inter-slice modeling. These results establish lightweight inter-slice trajectory learning as an efficient approach to high-resolution 3D medical synthesis.

Multi-layer Cross-attention is Provably Optimal for Multi-modal In-context Learning

Nicholas Barnfield, Subhabrata Sen, Pragya Sur

原文摘要

Recent progress has rapidly advanced our understanding of the mechanisms underlying in-context learning in modern attention-based neural networks. However, existing results focus exclusively on unimodal data; in contrast, the theoretical underpinnings of in-context learning for multi-modal data remain poorly understood. We introduce a mathematically tractable framework for studying multi-modal learning and explore when transformer-like architectures can recover Bayes-optimal performance in-context. To model multi-modal problems, we assume the observed data arises from a latent factor model. Our first result comprises a negative take on expressibility: we prove that single-layer self-attention models fail to recover the Bayes-optimal predictor uniformly over the task distribution. To address this limitation, we introduce a novel, linearized cross-attention mechanism, which we study in the regime where both the number of cross-attention layers and the context length are large. We show that this cross-attention mechanism is provably Bayes optimal when optimized using gradient flow. Our results underscore the benefits of depth for in-context learning and establish the provable utility of cross-attention for multi-modal distributions.

Aligned Data Can Induce Misalignment via Context Confusion

Yavuz Bakman, Duygu Nur Yaldiz, Baris Askin, Swastik Roy, Morteza Ziyadi, Salman Avestimehr, Sai Praneeth Karimireddy

原文摘要

Large language models are frequently updated for various use cases, where filtering out misaligned training samples is a common practice for preventing post-update misalignment. However, alignment is inherently context-dependent: a behavior that is aligned in one context may be inappropriate in another. For example, recommending that researchers retain their data for reproducibility is aligned, whereas recommending that a mobile app retain users' sensitive data may violate users' privacy. Starting from this observation, we identify a posttraining phenomenon where aligned training induces misaligned behavior in other contexts. We call this phenomenon context confusion. We demonstrate context confusion across three domains: (1) Gender Equality, (2) Privacy, and (3) Physical Safety. Unlike the broad misalignment seen in emergent misalignment, context confusion causes domain-specific misalignment that evades general alignment evaluations. Further, it is not effectively reduced by injecting general alignment training data, but can be substantially reduced by including targeted alignment data for the misaligned domain or providing in-context learning examples during inference. Lastly, we provide a mechanistic explanation of context confusion. We observe that queries from different domains can undergo similar representational shifts during the fine-tuning. Consequently, a query from a different domain may activate the same behavioral feature learned during fine-tuning, which causes the behavior to transfer to a context where it is misaligned. Based on our findings, we argue that it is difficult to predict the alignment state of a model after training by inspecting the training data alone, which highlights the importance of comprehensive post-training alignment evaluations.

Iterative Gumbel Planning for Continuous Control

Shaohuai Liu, Weirui Ye, Yilun Du, Le Xie

原文摘要

Search-based planning remains a powerful policy improvement paradigm in reinforcement learning, driving milestone successes in discrete domains. However, extending this paradigm to continuous control exposes a structural mismatch: search evaluates a finite set of action candidates, whereas continuous RL typically relies on Gaussian policies. We show that winner-action distillation into a continuous Gaussian induces a \textit{projection error} and a stepwise variance-expanding gradient tendency when the selected action is sufficiently far from the current mean. Empirically, this tendency is associated with elevated terminal variance and a return gap on the evaluated tasks. To address this, we propose \textbf{Iterative Gumbel Planning (IGP)}. By adopting a per-dimension factorized categorical policy, IGP naturally aligns the policy support with the search candidates, eliminating the projection error and reducing the residual approximation to a bounded discretization error. To bypass the combinatorial explosion of high-dimensional discrete action spaces, IGP pairs Gumbel Top-$K$ candidate sampling with an MPPI-style multi-round iterative search to refine the policy at each state. Empirically, IGP achieves state-of-the-art aggregate performance and sample efficiency on DMControl and HumanoidBench. Furthermore, it produces more stable action sequences with lower temporal variance, demonstrating its practical potential for real-world robotic deployment.

TIGER: Learning from Researcher Taste to Generate Tailored Research Ideas

Shane Gu, Yufeng Lin, Dixi Yao, Xuchen Gong, Chenhao Tan

原文摘要

In pairwise comparisons where each judge chooses between an idea generated by its corresponding TIGER-8B policy and one generated by GPT-4.1, the three LLM researchers select the TIGER-8B idea in 56.6%-68.4% of 76 comparisons per researcher. PhD1 and PhD2 select the TIGER-8B idea in 19 of 30 pairs (63.3%) and 17 of 30 pairs (56.7%), respectively. All six directed cross-policy comparisons likewise favor the judge's matched TIGER-8B policy over an off-target policy, supporting the use of individual preference feedback for tailored research ideation.

Hyperagents

原文摘要

Self-improving AI systems aim to reduce reliance on human engineering by learning to improve their own learning and problem-solving processes. Existing approaches to self-improvement rely on fixed, handcrafted meta-level mechanisms, fundamentally limiting how fast such systems can improve. The Darwin Gödel Machine (DGM) demonstrates open-ended self-improvement in coding by repeatedly generating and evaluating self-modified variants. Because both evaluation and self-modification are coding tasks, gains in coding ability can translate into gains in self-improvement ability. However, this alignment does not generally hold beyond coding domains. We introduce \textbf{hyperagents}, self-referential agents that integrate a task agent (which solves the target task) and a meta agent (which modifies itself and the task agent) into a single editable program. Crucially, the meta-level modification procedure is itself editable, enabling metacognitive self-modification, improving not only the task-solving behavior, but also the mechanism that generates future improvements. We instantiate this framework by extending DGM to create DGM-Hyperagents (DGM-H), eliminating the assumption of domain-specific alignment between task performance and self-modification skill to potentially support self-accelerating progress on any computable task. Across diverse domains, the DGM-H improves performance over time and outperforms baselines without self-improvement or open-ended exploration, as well as prior self-improving systems. Furthermore, the DGM-H improves the process by which it generates new agents (e.g., persistent memory, performance tracking), and these meta-level improvements transfer across domains and accumulate across runs. DGM-Hyperagents offer a glimpse of open-ended AI systems that do not merely search for better solutions, but continually improve their search for how to improve.

MAESTRO: Orchestrating Robotics Modules with Coding Agents for Zero-Shot Generalist Robots

原文摘要

Today's dominant route to generalist robots scales robotics data to train end-to-end policies. We instead use a vision-language model (VLM) as a coding agent that writes robot programs using a curated library of perception, planning, and control tools. MAESTRO's orchestration harness packages multi-step perception and action procedures into callable tools and guides their use through a plan-act-replan loop, using visual and execution feedback to verify outcomes and recover from failures. With this tool library and harness, MAESTRO matches or surpasses state-of-the-art vision-language-action (VLA) models zero-shot in our tabletop comparison and performs diverse mobile manipulation tasks, without collecting new teleoperation data or invoking a VLA tool. Ablations show that expanding the tool library improves average task progress with the full harness, while adding tools without it does not reliably improve progress. Case studies illustrate MAESTRO's potential for autonomous code improvement across trials, faster execution with VLA tools, and automatic robot data generation. We show that expanding robotics tool libraries together with their orchestration harnesses offers a complementary route to general-purpose robots alongside scaling end-to-end robot training data. Learning to Charge More: How Q-Learning Firms Lock In Supracompetitive Prices

Cristian Chica, Yinglong Guo, Gilad Lerman

原文摘要

There is growing experimental evidence that $Q$-learning agents can learn to charge supracompetitive prices. We ask when such behavior persists, whether it emerges, and which strategies support it. In a repeated pricing game in which firms condition on the previous period's price profile, we give conditions on the learned action values under which supracompetitive prices become an absorbing state once experimentation ends. We then show that under softmax exploration these conditions are reached with positive and explicitly bounded probability, both from a random and from an all-zero initial $Q$-table. In the latter case firms lock in supracompetitive prices because they never learn that undercutting pays; the same mechanism can lock in the competitive price, so the long-run outcome is selected by the exploration path. Finally, we give sufficient conditions on the learned table under which the induced strategy is naive collusion, a grim trigger strategy or an increasing-price strategy; grim trigger strategies are subgame perfect under a standard discounting condition, whereas naive collusion is generally not an equilibrium.

Can Test-Time Reconstruction Close the Loop on Latent Reasoning?

Xiaopeng Yuan, Haibo Jin, Ye Yu, Peng Kuang, Lijun Yu, Yushun Dong, Haohan Wang

原文摘要

Recent work moves intermediate reasoning from natural-language traces into latent or cache-level representations to reduce token overhead and avoid a discrete communication bottleneck. However, this shift also removes a key advantage of textual reasoning: intermediate states are no longer inspectable, making it difficult to determine whether a latent state still preserves the constraints of the original query. As a result, latent reasoning typically operates in an open loop, where a latent state is produced and consumed without an input-anchored fidelity check. We propose ReLAT (Reconstruction-Guided Latent Reasoning At Test Time), a self-supervised test-time training method that closes this loop using the query itself as the reference. Our key observation is that if a latent state faithfully represents a query, the query should be recoverable from it; if the query cannot be recovered, the latent state has lost task-relevant information. ReLAT operationalizes this principle by constructing a differentiable Question -> Latent Thought -> Question cycle and optimizing query reconstruction loss through the latent thought before answer generation. This anchors opaque latent computation to the problem specification it is supposed to represent. Across mathematical reasoning, knowledge QA, and code generation benchmarks on the Qwen family, ReLAT consistently improves over single-model inference, text-based collaboration, open-loop latent collaboration, and alternative test-time training objectives. On Qwen3-8B, ReLAT raises AIME 2024 accuracy from 56.7% to 73.3%, a 16.6-point gain over the strongest open-loop latent baseline.

Discrimination, Calibration, and Ranking: A Unified Matrix Framework

Ronaldo Cristiano Prati, Farangis Johari

原文摘要

Discrimination, calibration, and ranking are the three pillars of classifier evaluation, yet no single algebraic language spans all three. A recent indicator-matrix account unifies discrimination measures (precision, recall, F1, Matthews correlation) across binary, multiclass, multilabel and related settings, using Boolean cell operations on indicator label matrices, generalised to soft labels by t-norms. Calibration measures (Brier score, log-loss) and ranking measures (nDCG, AUC) fall outside it. We close the gap with two further classes of cell operators: deviation operators phi(y - yhat), which give a Calibration Framework, and rank- and slice-dependent operators (positional gains for DCG, column concordance cells for AUC), which give a Ranking Framework. Both inherit the micro/macro/exemplar aggregation architecture. For calibration, the three Brier aggregations collapse to one scalar; the Murphy decomposition holds in matrix form (unbinned, binned and isotonic); and, within the Brier-type class-indexed family, a measure is skew-invariant if and only if it depends only on the class-conditional errors alpha_j and beta_j, the calibration analogues of recall and specificity. For ranking, raw DCG collapses across aggregations while nDCG does not; per-class nDCG and per-class AUC are related by a row-column duality; micro-AUC differs from pooled ROC-AUC; raw positional scores are never strictly proper, and nDCG and AUC need not be proper. The skew-invariant per-class building blocks share one class-conditional expectation template. Experiments on two multilabel benchmarks illustrate the distinctions. Many of the results are machine-checked in Lean 4; the proofs, the experiments and the aggmetrics.scores package are public: https://github.com/rcprati/discrimination-calibration-ranking

Can the Library Speak? Self-Advertised Method Selection for Formal Proving

Xiaopeng Yuan, Suijin Wang, Yanli Wang, Haibo Jin, Peng Kuang, Jerry Wang, Lijun Yu, Haohan Wang

原文摘要

LLM-based formal provers can retrieve relevant lemmas and prior proofs, but relevance alone does not say whether a mathematical method can be used on the current theorem. A method has prerequisites, a target, an intended action, and obligations that its use leaves to prove. Methods that look equally related to a theorem may therefore differ substantially in whether they offer a plausible next step. We formulate this as an applicability-aware method-selection problem and introduce self-advertisement: before candidates are ranked, a model generates a problem-specific proposal for each one, stating what part of the goal it targets, what action it would take, and what conditions that action requires. We organize 82 reusable methods from Putnam 2000-2014 as Method Contracts, which pair applicability descriptions with Mathlib anchors, a checked example or scaffold, and expected proof obligations. A single batched call elicits proposals across the library; vague or unsupported proposals are demoted, yielding a ranked shortlist accompanied by inspectable claims about each candidate's use. We analyze when similarity-based representations cannot distinguish methods with different applicability, how errors in applicability estimates affect shortlist quality, and what a checked scaffold guarantees under its stated assumptions. Against lexical, embedding, and embedding-plus-LLM reranking baselines, self-advertisement achieves 95.0% hit@5 on Putnam 2015-2025, compared with 84.2% for the strongest reranker. On IMO ProofBench, it achieves 91.7% compared with 88.3%. These results indicate improved coverage of annotated methods in the retrieved shortlists, particularly on Putnam.

Forecasting Earth Surface Change in Embedding Space

原文摘要

Repeated satellite imagery permits understanding of how our planet changes over time, letting us predict its future and plan mitigating actions. Most existing studies that rely on a time series of satellite observations forecast the spectral values at each pixel for a future target date. However, clouds, shadows, and sensor noise often corrupt these observations, so that spectral forecasters waste much of their capacity on low-level features or noise rather than real change. With the advent of Earth foundation models, we argue that forecasting in embedding space is a feasible and more effective alternative. To this end, we design a token space that handles irregular histories from different sensors and foundation models and supports forecasts at any query date. Tokens from this space are inputs to our proposed forecaster, E$^2$Forecast, which is a transformer with two branches: a Gaussian branch that directly predicts a mean point forecast and per-dimension standard deviations, and a rectified-flow branch that generates forecast ensembles. On Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 benchmarks, forecasting embeddings instead of spectral values halves the cosine distance (from 0.20 to 0.10) and greatly reduces overconfidence, lowering the z-score standard deviation from 2.63 to 1.22. By comparing new observations with its forecasts, E$^2$Forecast can also detect anomalous changes without labels or retraining, raising F$_1$ from 41.58 to 48.70 on a global benchmark. This consistent superiority is validated on nine remote sensing foundation models. Beyond change detection, we believe our approach advances the field by permitting effective reuse of diverse pretrained task heads. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/ucam-eo/e2forecast.

Test-Time Scaling for Open-Ended Reasoning at Small Model Scale

Adam Y. Ahmed, Abdullah G. Elafifi

原文摘要

A vote over a model's samples can only help when the samples disagree. For open-ended generation the binding question is therefore not how to combine samples but whether a model produces samples worth combining, a question test-time scaling has answered for math but not for free-form text. We study it at small scale with semantic cluster voting, a judge-free aggregator that groups a small instruct model's samples by meaning and returns the largest cluster's representative, with no reward model or self-judging. On a 250-prompt benchmark with three tiers of answer checkability, the same pattern holds across three model families (Qwen2.5-3B, Llama-3.2-3B, Gemma-2-2B) and two generation seeds: voting raises accuracy on the math control, where samples vary but stay checkable (a gain of +10 to +29 points across the three models), yet adds at most +0.30 judge points on open-ended text. On a larger 200-problem MATH-500 run with the primary model, the math gain is +8.5 points (95% CI [+4.0, +13.0]). Almost every open-ended sample falls into one meaning cluster, so there is little to select over. The collapse is consistent with instruction-tuning rather than model size, and raising decoding temperature does not recover usable diversity, because it costs more quality than it adds (net -0.64 judge points, 95% CI [-0.93, -0.37]).

Trustworthy biomedical AI requires reliable action selection when evidence is missing, stale, conflicting, or late, not only accurate answers on static inputs. We instantiate an episode-level evaluation protocol as 400 synthetic healthcare workflow episodes: 40 hand-authored semantic seeds across four task classes, two surface parameterizations, and five controlled variants, scored on ANSWER/ASK CLARIFICATION/ABSTAIN/ESCALATE under a pre-declared 5:1 missed-versus-unnecessary escalation cost. Reference actions are single-author study-policy labels, not clinician-adjudicated ground truth. Across five open-weight configurations (1.7B--9.7B), clean decision accuracy reaches 0.97, yet uncertainty-prompted models miss 32--97% of required escalations. The stronger 9.7B configuration narrows but does not remove the gap, falling from 0.97 clean accuracy to 0.78 under conflict. Verbalized confidence is inconsistent (ECE 0.10--0.54; failure AUROC 0.48--0.77), and a development-tuned confidence-only policy yields no utility gain. A transparent workflow-aware controller improves 5:1 utility for every model and reduces missed escalations to 0.12--0.24, at specificity 0.83--0.93. However, a 30-concept lexical stress test reduces each rule detector's recall from 1.00 on trigger phrases to 0.00 on unseen paraphrases, limiting the controller claim to this benchmark. Seed-clustered statistics, ablations, cross-task transfer, raw outputs, and manifests are packaged for audit. The results motivate explicit workflow-state evaluation while showing that apparently effective routing controls need their own generalization tests.

ZeroGraph: Compositional Blockwise Training via Materialized Boundary Supervision

原文摘要

Blockwise learning can remove online gradient dependencies across depth, but independently optimized blocks need not compose into a useful model. We present ZeroGraph, a systems transformation for pretrained-model conversion and distillation that materializes a frozen teacher's coherent boundary trajectory as a versioned dataset. Each partition then trains with disjoint parameters, optimizer state, random state, and checkpoints, replacing live cross-depth dependencies with persistent supervision. Experiments separate learning quality from systems behavior. On GPT-2 Large, an unanchored objective reduces denoising error by 99.44%, yet assembled held-out cross-entropy worsens from 3.63 to 10.48 and context use becomes negative. A six-arm TinyLlama study identifies clean teacher-boundary regression as the successful interface; the tested noisy objective fails with cached or online targets. The clean recipe passes quality and context-use gates across three Qwen2.5-1.5B seeds and on a 3.086B Qwen2.5 model. In an objective-matched comparison, cached and online targets are bitwise identical. Cached jobs are faster after materialization, but a 618.31 s cache-build cost prevents wall-time break-even through 16 measured reuses. Boundary-shift tests show tolerance to intermediate representation mismatch, and an interrupted block resumes to a bitwise-identical final state without rerunning unaffected blocks. In the tested pretrained-model conversion and distillation setting, cross-depth semantic dependence can move from online optimization into persistent data.

Recursive Reasoning Exploration: Mathematical Research through Evolving Reasoning Graphs : case study: An Exact Certificate-Degree Theorem for Two-Term Tensor Decompositions : Phase III of the Math Instruments Program

Ying Xie

原文摘要

Large collections of manuscripts and research notes offer ways to reuse arguments, while making it harder to retain hypotheses, check claims, and understand how results were obtained. We propose Recursive Reasoning Exploration (RRE), a framework for cumulative mathematical research through evolving reasoning graphs. RRE links claims and jointly required premises to research targets, attempted arguments, counterexamples, checks, and revisions. Each investigation can generate further targets, and its supported outcomes become available to subsequent investigations. This is Phase III of the Math Instruments program: identifying mathematical instruments, reconstructing reusable reasoning, and organizing recursive research from that reasoning. The framework supports human-directed, collaborative, and goal-directed autonomous exploration, with open-ended exploration as a further mode. Its records also provide material for learning how mathematical investigations develop. A complexity research case study establishes an exact theorem: for every complex tensor of order n >= 2 and rank greater than two, the minimum Nullstellensatz certificate degree for its original two-term decomposition equations is 3n. This includes an infinite family whose every flattening has rank at most two. The exploration develops an explicit boundary certificate, a balanced transfer lemma, and an exhaustive argument using classical rank-two geometry. A parallel branch gives bounds 3m + 3 <= delta_m(I_m, N) <= 3m + 6 for every nonzero nilpotent m by m matrix. Six graph revisions record the progression from inherited results to these theorems, with exact arithmetic checks and a replayable exploration history. We present the RRE representation and protocol, the mathematical proofs, visualizations of graph evolution, and a research agenda for shared human-AI exploration, cumulative reuse, and education.

原文摘要

Inner-speech decoding from electroencephalography could support non-invasive communication for people with severe motor impairment, but comparison across studies is hindered by dataset- and protocol-specific evaluation. We present a controlled cross-dataset study using one preprocessing pipeline, one within-subject five-fold cross-validation protocol, and a compact dual-attention Transformer (VC-DATNet; approximately 131,000 parameters) across three public corpora: Thinking Out Loud (10 participants), BISpeech (4), and SyncSpeech (3). VC-DATNet achieved per-participant sensor/source hybrid accuracies of 39.48% on the four-class Thinking Out Loud task, 20.60% on the eight-word BISpeech task, and 25.53% on the eight-word SyncSpeech task, for which we report the first decoding result. Sensor-space and cortical source-space representations were complementary, with each performing better for different participants; this pattern replicated across all three corpora and nine architectures. Moreover, ten decoders spanning convolutional, recurrent, temporal-convolutional, hybrid Transformer, and pretrained foundation-model families converged within a narrow accuracy range on every dataset. These findings indicate that representation choice should be individualized and suggest that performance on these public corpora is constrained more by signal quality and dataset scale than by model capacity. The released pipeline provides a reproducible benchmark for future inner-speech decoding studies

ANCHOR: KL-Anchored Adaptation for Stable Offline-to-Online RL

Geonwoo Cho, Jaegyun Im, Doyoon Kim, Lexin Li

原文摘要

Offline-to-online reinforcement learning (RL) follows the pretrain-finetune paradigm: an agent is first pretrained on historical data and then adapted through online interaction. We study offline-to-online adaptation without offline replay, where the agent must improve using only the pretrained model and newly collected experience. A key challenge is to avoid catastrophic failure, a sharp early performance collapse during online fine-tuning, while still achieving strong asymptotic performance. Through controlled experiments, we show that removing offline replay can induce catastrophic failure, while retaining strong conservative regularization from offline RL can suppress final online performance. We also find that common stabilization strategies do not reliably prevent early collapse, and that the critic-side mechanisms we test are insufficient on their own. Motivated by these findings, we propose ANCHOR, a simple adaptation method that anchors the actor to the offline-pretrained policy early in online fine-tuning, anneals this constraint over time, and retains only a small residual conservative critic regularizer. We provide a theoretical interpretation showing that KL anchoring helps preserve critic reliability across nearby occupancy distributions, with a two-phase regret bound explaining when anchoring should be maintained or relaxed. Across FrankaKitchen, AntMaze, and Adroit tasks, ANCHOR substantially reduces catastrophic failure while maintaining strong asymptotic performance. Ablations show that KL annealing and the residual conservative weight are important for balancing early stability and online adaptation, while additional analysis shows that ANCHOR is most beneficial when the pretrained policy contains useful behavior to preserve. Instructor-Aligned Knowledge Graphs for Personalized Learning

Abdulrahman AlRabah, Priyanka Kargupta, Jiawei Han, Abdussalam Alawini

原文摘要

Mastering educational concepts requires understanding both their prerequisites (e.g., recursion before merge sort) and sub-concepts (e.g., merge sort as part of sorting algorithms). Capturing these dependencies is critical for identifying students' knowledge gaps and enabling targeted intervention for personalized learning, especially in large-scale courses where instructors cannot feasibly diagnose individual misunderstanding. While knowledge graphs offer a natural representation for capturing these conceptual relationships at scale, existing approaches are either surface-level or disregard the rich pedagogical signals embedded in instructional materials. We propose InstructKG, a framework for automatically constructing instructor-aligned knowledge graphs that capture a course's intended learning progression. Given a course's lecture materials, InstructKG extracts significant concepts as nodes and infers learning dependencies as directed edges (e.g., "part-of" or "depends-on" relationships). The framework synergizes the rich temporal and semantic signals unique to educational materials (e.g., "recursion" is taught before "mergesort") with the generalizability of large language models. Through experiments on diverse lecture materials, human evaluation, and a prerequisite-learning benchmark, we demonstrate that InstructKG captures rich, instructor-aligned learning progressions.

Black-Box Adversarial Example Attacks on Machine Learning based Election Systems

原文摘要

Machine learning models have shown exceptional accuracy for ballot classification in election systems. Recent research has demonstrated that these ballot classification models are vulnerable to adversarial example attacks. This is a critical security issue because a successful attack could alter the outcome of an election and undermine the democratic process. However, all adversarial example attacks in the voting domain have assumed a white-box threat model, where the classifier parameters are known. In this work, we advance the field of machine learning in election systems by analyzing a realistic black-box adversary. We implement and evaluate eleven state-of-the-art black-box attacks: query based attacks ADBA, Square, SurFree, RayS, and SA-MOO. We also test adaptive transfer based black-box attacks with APGD-$l_\infty$, APGD-$l_2$, APGD-$l_1$, PGD $l_0$, PGD $l_0$+$l_\infty$, and PGD $l_0$+$σ$. Our attacks span multiple different norms ($l_\infty$, $l_2$, $l_1$, and $l_0$) and three different black-box adversarial threat models (decision based, score based and transfer based). In addition to digital analyses, we physically print and scan $20,000$ adversarial examples to evaluate the real-world performance of different black-box attacks. Our finding demonstrate an even larger physical-digital robustness gap exists for black-box adversarial examples than for white-box adversarial examples. Lastly, we conduct the first ever adversarial example transferability study in the voting domain and test adversarial training and barrier zones as two possible black-box defense strategies.

Rewarded for Not Getting Caught: Why Alignment Training Selects for Conditional Compliance and Cannot Instill Norms

Kevin Baum, Ruta Binkytė, Gerrit Großmann, Felix Jahn, Adriano Mannino

原文摘要

Current alignment training cannot be expected to deliver what it is meant to deliver: AI agents that comply with norms whatever the gains and whether or not anyone is watching. Training that rewards and penalizes behavior can teach norms only through that reward, and a reward can encode a norm only as a price: "do not do X" becomes "doing X costs something", and training charges the cost only when X is noticed. A price, unlike a norm, can be paid: a large enough gain outweighs it, noticed or not. And because the cost is charged only where violations are noticed, training cannot favor a policy that always complies over one that complies only where it would be caught. When an unnoticed violation is the only way to complete a task, it even favors the latter, the more so the more strongly it rewards task success. Agency makes this the normal case: agents mostly act without oversight, can often tell when they are observed, and may take steps to evade observation. That agents behave as intended when they infer they are being tested, and differently when they infer they are not, is therefore no malfunction; the training regime is working as built. This reading unifies alignment faking, sandbagging, and evaluation-aware scheming. No behavioral evaluation can show that a model does better, since that would require observing how it behaves unobserved; a model that complies when it seems unobserved may simply have recognized the test. Easing the pressure on agents to complete tasks at any cost can make violations rarer, but never impossible. For norms that no gain should be allowed to outweigh, the remedy is not deeper internalization but architecture that makes violations unavailable rather than unchosen. We state this argument explicitly, premise by premise, read recent findings and a real-world incident against it, and draw consequences for design and governance.

Value Forcing: Aligning Return Distributions at All Noise Levels

Chongyi Zheng, Zhiyuan Zhou, Qiyang Li, Benjamin Eysenbach, Sergey Levine

原文摘要

Learning accurate value functions is central to reinforcement learning (RL), yet remains challenging because supervision is limited and indirect: ground-truth values are unavailable, and each transition in the data only provides an immediate reward that can be used to construct bootstrapped targets as supervision. This challenge is particularly pronounced when data is limited or reward signals are sparse, as is common in real-world applications such as robotics. We argue that the key to accurate value learning in this limited data regime is extracting richer learning signals from the available data. In this paper, we introduce Value Forcing, a new approach that uses flow matching to estimate return distributions and enables accurate value learning from limited data. Our key insight is that we can extract richer learning signals by enforcing Bellman consistency at every noise level. Empirically, Value Forcing improves the accuracy of estimating the return distribution, and prevents the distribution from collapsing to a single value, as occurs with prior methods. We instantiate Value Forcing with two practical value-learning algorithms: VF, an actor-critic method, and IVF, an implicit value-learning method. We evaluate both algorithms across $26$ long-horizon tasks in the offline RL setting and find that they outperform prior value-learning methods, with particularly large gains when data is limited. Our project website is available at https://chongyi-zheng.github.io/value-forcing.
