Mind The Gap (MTG-AD): Dataset and Fine-grained Evaluation for End-to-End Inline Audio Descriptions

Subhashini Venugopalan, Jenny Tan, Taylor Roper, Jimmy Tobin, Anton Kast, Alicia Martin, Sam Sepah, Amy Pavel

Audio descriptions (AD) are essential for making visual media accessible to blind and low-vision (BLV) users. While Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) offer a scalable solution for generating audio descriptions on-demand, their performance on ``inline'' audio descriptions -- which must fit within existing silences in a video -- remains under-explored, particularly for diverse user-generated content (UGC). We present a comprehensive investigation into MLLM-generated inline audio descriptions. First, we introduce MTG-AD, a professionally annotated dataset of 36 hours of videos, each averaging $\sim$5 mins. and 8k+ descriptions in total, co-created by paired blind and sighted AD professionals to provide a high-quality benchmark for this task. Second, we propose MTG-AD-Eval, an evaluation framework based on audio description expert guidelines that provides fine-grained, reference-free actionable metrics for model improvement. Crucially, our framework evaluates the end-to-end task: it renders the generated scripts into audio tracks to assess their fit within the original video's natural silences, minimizing disruptive overlaps. Our analysis across frontier MLLMs reveals that while models accurately describe visual events and substantially reduce speech overlaps, gaps persist in narrative pacing and flow. Finally, we empirically validate that our automated and reference-free metrics correlate significantly with human quality ratings from sighted raters and 7 BLV participants, finding that while users narrowly prefer human-authored audio descriptions, they find MLLM-generated audio descriptions highly beneficial for comprehension. We provide actionable system design guidance and release MTG-AD at https://hf.co/datasets/google/mind-the-gap-inline-ad and MTG-AD-Eval at https://github.com/google/mtg-ad.

EmbeddingGemma 2: Unified and Efficient Multimodal Representations

Henrique Schechter Vera, Sahil Dua, Jovan Andonov, Sara Smoot, Sebastian Russo, Ivan Llanos, Max Matveev, Jae Hyeon Yoo 等 73 位作者

We present EmbeddingGemma 2, an open multimodal embedding model which natively represents text, images, audio, video, and combinations thereof in a unified space. Our approach introduces improvements such as simplified per-layer embeddings and a multi-stage curriculum with modality and objective progression which ensure strong quality across unimodal, cross-modal, and mixed-modal evaluations. Notably, in comprehensive embedding benchmarks across all modalities, EmbeddingGemma 2 establishes a new Pareto frontier, outperforming both specialist models and models two to twelve times larger. Furthermore, our design offers flexibility for resource-constrained environments, supporting selective modality encoder loading, adjustable vision token budgets, truncatable embedding dimensions, and quantized weights. We present ablations analyzing key decisions and release EmbeddingGemma 2 to promote further research.

GaussianSpline: Adaptive Bézier Splines for Highly Dynamic 4D Gaussian Splatting

Tom Yachil, Andrei Sharf

We present GaussianSpline, a dynamic 4D Gaussian Splatting method that models per-Gaussian motion using adaptive, non-uniform piecewise cubic Bézier splines. Unlike approaches based on global deformations, fixed-order polynomials, or uniformly parameterized splines, GaussianSpline jointly learns the Bézier control points and the temporal partition of each Gaussian's trajectory. This adaptive representation allocates greater temporal capacity to highly dynamic regions while maintaining compact trajectories for near-static regions, enabling high-fidelity reconstruction of complex and rapidly changing motion. To jointly achieve globally smooth motion and local adaptivity, we enforce $G^1$ continuity between consecutive Bézier segments using a reflection-based constraint on their control points. This produces smooth, fully differentiable trajectories while preserving the flexibility of non-uniform temporal parameterization. Experiments on the Neural 3D Video benchmark, the Google Immersive dataset, as well as on synthetic scenes demonstrate that GaussianSpline substantially improves reconstruction quality in scenes with highly non-uniform and challenging dynamics, while maintaining competitive performance on general dynamic scenes compared with state-of-the-art 4D Gaussian Splatting methods.

See2Refine: Vision-Language Feedback Improves LLM-Based eHMI Action Designers

Ding Xia The University of Tokyo, Xinyue Gui, Mark Colley University College London, University of London, Fan Gao, Zhongyi Zhou Google, Dongyuan Li The University of Tokyo and Institute of Science Tokyo, Renhe Jiang The University of Tokyo, Takeo Igarashi The University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology

Automated vehicles lack natural communication channels with other road users, making external Human-Machine Interfaces (eHMIs) essential for conveying intent and maintaining trust in shared environments. However, most eHMI studies rely on developer-crafted message-action pairs, which are difficult to adapt to diverse and dynamic traffic contexts. A promising alternative is to use Large Language Models (LLMs) as action designers that generate context-conditioned eHMI actions, yet such designers lack perceptual verification and typically depend on fixed prompts or costly human-annotated feedback for improvement. We present See2Refine, a human-free, closed-loop framework that uses vision-language models (VLMs) for perceptual evaluation as automated visual feedback to improve an LLM-based eHMI action designer. Given a driving context and a candidate eHMI action, the VLM evaluates the perceived appropriateness of the action, and this feedback is used to iteratively revise the designer’s outputs, enabling systematic refinement without human supervision. We evaluate our framework across three eHMI modalities (lightbar, eyes, and arm) and multiple LLM model sizes. Across settings, our framework consistently outperforms prompt-only LLM designers and manually specified baselines in both VLM-based metrics and human-subject evaluations. The results further indicate that the improvements are generalized across modalities and that VLM evaluations are reasonably aligned with human preferences in our controlled settings, supporting the robustness and effectiveness of See2Refine for scalable action design.

DocLens: A Tool-Augmented Multi-Agent Framework for Long Visual Document Understanding

Dawei Zhu, Rui Meng Google Cloud AI Research, Jiefeng Chen Google, Sujian Li Peking University, Tomas Pfister Google, Jinsung Yoon Google

Comprehending long visual documents, where information is distributed across extensive pages of text and visual elements, is a critical but challenging task for modern Vision-Language Models (VLMs). Existing approaches falter on a fundamental challenge: evidence localization. They struggle to retrieve relevant pages and overlook fine-grained details within visual elements, leading to limited performance and model hallucination. To address this, we propose DocLens, a tool-augmented multi-agent framework that effectively “zooms in” on evidence like a lens. It first navigates from the full document to specific visual elements on relevant pages, then employs a sampling-adjudication mechanism to generate a single, reliable answer. Paired with Gemini-2.5-Pro, DocLens achieves state-of-the-art performance on MMLongBench-Doc and FinRAGBench-V, surpassing even human experts. The framework’s superiority is particularly evident on vision-centric and unanswerable queries, demonstrating the power of its enhanced localization capabilities.

MM-PoisonRAG: Disrupting Multimodal RAG with Local and Global Knowledge Poisoning Attacks

Hyeonjeong Ha Department of Computer Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Qiusi Zhan, Jeonghwan Kim, Dimitrios Bralios, Saikrishna Sanniboina Microsoft, Nanyun Peng Google and University of California, Los Angeles, Kai-Wei Chang University of California, Los Angeles and Amazon, Daniel Kang 等 9 位作者

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) has become a common practice in multimodal large language models (MLLM) to enhance factual grounding and reduce hallucination. Yet, its reliance on retrieval exposes MLLMs to knowledge poisoning attacks, in which adversaries deliberately inject malicious multimodal content into external knowledge bases to steer models toward generating incorrect or even harmful responses. We present MM-PoisonRAG, a framework to systematically study the vulnerability of multimodal RAG under knowledge poisoning. Specifically, we design two novel attack strategies: Localized Poisoning Attack (LPA), which implants targeted, query-specific multimodal misinformation to manipulate outputs toward attacker-controlled responses, and Globalized Poisoning Attack (GPA), which uses a single, untargeted adversarial injection to broadly corrupt reasoning and collapse generation quality across all queries. Extensive experiments on diverse tasks, multimodal RAG components, and attacker access levels reveal severe vulnerabilities: LPA achieves up to 56% attack success rate even under restricted access, and transfers effectively across four different retrievers without re-optimizing the adversaries. GPA completely disrupts model generation to 0% accuracy with just one poisoned content. Moreover, both LPA and GPA bypass existing defenses, underscoring the fragility of multimodal RAG and establishing MM-PoisonRAG as a foundation for future research on securing RAG frameworks against multimodal knowledge poisoning.

GeoRC: A Benchmark for Geolocation Reasoning Chains

Mohit Talreja Georgia Institute of Technology, Joshua Diao, Jim James, Radu Casapu Georgia Institute of Technology, Tejas Santanam Georgia Institute of Technology, Ethan Mendes, Alan Ritter Georgia Institute of Technology, Wei Xu Georgia Institute of Technology 等 9 位作者

Vision Language Models (VLMs) are good at recognizing the global location of a photograph – their geolocation prediction accuracy rivals the best human experts. But many VLMs are startlingly bad at explaining which image evidence led to their prediction, even when their location prediction is correct. The reasoning chains produced by VLMs frequently hallucinate scene attributes to support their location prediction (e.g. phantom writing, imagined infrastructure, misidentified flora). In this paper, we introduce the first benchmark for geolocation reasoning chains. We focus on the global location prediction task in the popular GeoGuessr game which draws from Google Street View spanning more than 100 countries. We collaborate with expert GeoGuessr players, including the reigning world champion, to produce 800 “ground truth” reasoning chains for 500 query scenes. These expert reasoning chains address hundreds of different discriminative visual attributes such as license plate shape, architecture, and soil properties to name just a few. We evaluate LLM-as-a-judge and VLM-as-a-judge strategies for scoring VLM-generated reasoning chains against our expert reasoning chains and find that Qwen 3 LLM-as-a-judge correlates best with human scoring. Our benchmark reveals that while large, closed-source VLMs such as Gemini and GPT 5 rival human experts at prediction locations, they still lag behind human experts when it comes to producing auditable reasoning chains. Open weights VLMs such as Llama and Qwen catastrophically fail on our benchmark – they perform only slightly better than a baseline in which an LLM hallucinates a reasoning chain with oracle knowledge of the photo location but no visual information at all. We believe the gap between human experts and VLMs on this task points to VLM limitations at extracting fine-grained visual attributes from high resolution images. We open source our benchmark for the community to use.

Success and Cost Elicit Convention Formation for Efficient Communication

Saujas Vaduguru Carnegie Mellon University, Yilun Hua Department of Computer Science, Cornell University, Yoav Artzi Google DeepMind, arXiv and Cornell University, Daniel Fried Meta AI and Carnegie Mellon University

Humans leverage shared conversational context to become increasingly successful and efficient at communicating over time. One manifestation of this is the formation of ad hoc linguistic conventions, which allow people to coordinate on short, less costly utterances that are understood using shared conversational context. We present a method to train large multimodal models to form conventions, enabling efficient communication. Our approach uses simulated reference games between models, and requires no additional human-produced data. In repeated reference games involving photographs and tangram images, our method enables models to communicate efficiently with people: reducing the message length by up to 41% while increasing success by 15% over the course of the interaction. Human listeners respond faster when interacting with our model that forms conventions. We also show that training based on success or cost alone is insufficient – both are necessary to elicit convention formation.

Does RLVR Extend Reasoning Boundaries? Investigating Capability Expansion in Vision-Language Models

Minghe Shen, Zhuo Zhi, Chonghan Liu, Shuo Xing Google and Texas A&M University - College Station, Zhengzhong Tu Texas A&M University - College Station, Che Liu

Recent studies posit that Reinforcement Learning with Verifiable Rewards (RLVR) primarily amplifies behaviors inherent to the pre-training distribution rather than inducing new capabilities, but these insights are predominantly limited to language-only domains, leaving the dynamics of visual-centric spatial reasoning under-explored. To examine the impact of RLVR on the capability boundaries of Vision-Language Models (VLMs), we introduce Ariadne, a controlled framework based on synthetic maze navigation where the reasoning difficulty is precisely regulated by path length and the number of turns. We demonstrate that applying RLVR extends the spatial reasoning boundary, achieving success on problems where the base policy VLM consistently attains 0% accuracy despite increasing pass@k sampling budgets, indicating that the optimized policy successfully navigates search spaces that were effectively unreachable by the base distribution. Furthermore, despite being trained exclusively on synthetic mazes, we evaluate the model on two real-world navigation benchmarks (MapBench and ReasonMap) in a zero-shot setting. The observed improvements in these out-of-domain tasks suggest genuine spatial reasoning capability expansion rather than mere sampling efficiency. Our code is available at: https://github.com/MingheShen/Ariadne

Knowledge Control for Responsible Generative AI: Bridging Academia, Industry, and Society

Zheyuan Liu University of Notre Dame, Yixin Wan University of California, Los Angeles, Kai-Wei Chang University of California, Los Angeles, Meng Jiang University of Notre Dame, Jieyu Zhao University of Southern California, Nouha Dziri Cohere Labs, Yuning Mao Meta Superintelligence Labs, Jia-Chen Gu University of California, Los Angeles 等 9 位作者

Controlling the knowledge and behavior of generative AI systems, including large language models (LLMs), multimodal LLMs (MLLMs), and text-to-image (T2I) models, has become critical as they are increasingly used in safety-sensitive and socially impactful applications. These models often encode unintended, biased, or private content, leading to harmful or unethical outputs. Post-training knowledge control has thus emerged as a practical framework for selectively modifying or removing model behaviors without full retraining, offering scalable and interpretable interventions for improving safety, privacy, and fairness. This tutorial introduces the foundations of post-training knowledge control and showcases recent frontier methods, bridging research insights with real-world practices from both academia and industry. We cover: (i) key motivations and failure modes, such as harmful generation and stereotype reinforcement; (ii) core methods such as machine unlearning, knowledge editing, and inference-time interventions for targeted behavior adjustment; and (iii) evaluation protocols for balancing forgetting, retention, and fairness. Case studies will span text and vision–language generation, including privacy preservation, bias mitigation, and factual correction.

Do VLMs Perceive or Recall? Probing Visual Perception vs. Memory with Classic Visual Illusions

Sun, Xiaoxiao, Li, Mingyang, Yuan, Kun, Sun, Min Woo, Endo, Mark, Wu, Shengguang, Li, Changlin, Zhang, Yuhui 等 10 位作者

Large Vision-Language Models (VLMs) often answer classic visual illusions "correctly" on original images, yet persist with the same responses when illusion factors are inverted, even though the visual change is obvious to humans. This raises a fundamental question: do VLMs perceive visual changes or merely recall memorized patterns? While several studies have noted this phenomenon, the underlying causes remain unclear. To move from observations to systematic understanding, this paper introduces VI-Probe, a controllable visual-illusion framework with graded perturbations and matched visual controls (without illusion inducer) that disentangles visually grounded perception from language-driven recall. Unlike prior work that focuses on averaged accuracy, we measure stability and sensitivity using Polarity-Flip Consistency, Template Fixation Index, and an illusion multiplier normalized against matched controls. Experiments across different families reveal that response persistence arises from heterogeneous causes rather than a single mechanism. For instance, GPT-5 exhibits memory override, Claude-Opus-4.1 shows perception-memory competition, while Qwen variants suggest visual-processing limits. Our findings challenge single-cause views and motivate probing-based evaluation that measures both knowledge and sensitivity to controlled visual change. Data and code are available at https://sites.google.com/view/vi-probe/.

REArtGS++: Generalizable Articulation Reconstruction with Temporal Geometry Constraint via Planar Gaussian Splatting

Wu, Di, Liu, Liu, Huang, Anran, Liu, Yuyan, Yu, Qiaojun, Liu, Shaofan, Song, Liangtu, Lu, Cewu

Articulated objects are pervasive in daily environments, such as drawers and refrigerators. Towards their part-level surface reconstruction and joint parameter estimation, REArtGS [??] introduces a category-agnostic approach using multi-view RGB images at two different states. However, we observe that REArtGS still struggles with screw-joint or multi-part objects and lacks geometric constraints for unseen states. In this paper, we propose REArtGS++, a novel method towards generalizable articulated object reconstruction with temporal geometry constraint and planar Gaussian splatting. We first model a decoupled screw motion for each joint without type prior, and jointly optimize part-aware Gaussians with joint parameters through part motion blending. To introduce time-continuous geometric constraint for articulated modeling, we encourage Gaussians to be planar and propose a temporally consistent regularization between planar normal and depth through Taylor first-order expansion. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world articulated objects demonstrate our superiority in generalizable part-level surface reconstruction and joint parameter estimation, compared to existing approaches. VecGlypher: Unified Vector Glyph Generation with Language Models

Huang, Xiaoke, Gauri, Bhavul, Ng, Kam Woh, Ng, Tony, Xu, Mengmeng, Liu, Zhiheng, Ren, Weiming, An, Zhaochong 等 15 位作者

Vector glyphs are the atomic units of digital typography, yet most learning-based pipelines still depend on carefully curated exemplar sheets and raster-to-vector postprocessing, which limits accessibility and editability. We introduce VecGlypher, a single multimodal language model that generates high-fidelity vector glyphs directly from text descriptions or image exemplars. Given a style prompt, optional reference glyph images, and a target character, VecGlypher autoregressively emits SVG path tokens, avoiding raster intermediates and producing editable, watertight outlines in one pass. A typography-aware data and training recipe makes this possible: (i) a large-scale continuation stage on 39K noisy Envato fonts to master SVG syntax and long-horizon geometry, followed by (ii) post-training on 2.5K expert-annotated Google Fonts with descriptive tags and exemplars to align language and imagery with geometry; preprocessing normalizes coordinate frames, canonicalizes paths, de-duplicates families, and quantizes coordinates for stable long-sequence decoding. On cross-family OOD evaluation, VecGlypher substantially outperforms both general-purpose LLMs and specialized vector-font baselines for text-only generation, while image-referenced generation reaches a state-of-the-art performance, with marked gains over DeepVecFont-v2 and DualVector. Ablations show that model scale and the two-stage recipe are critical and that absolute-coordinate serialization yields the best geometry. VecGlypher lowers the barrier to font creation by letting users design with words or exemplars, and provides a scalable foundation for future multimodal design tools.

Unblocking Fine-Grained Evaluation of Detailed Captions: An Explaining AutoRater and Critic-and-Revise Pipeline

Brian Gordon, Yonatan Bitton, Andreea Marzoca, Yasumasa Onoe, Xiao Wang, Daniel Cohen-Or, Idan Szpektor

Large Vision-Language Models (VLMs) now generate highly detailed, paragraphlength image captions, yet evaluating their factual accuracy remains challenging. Current methods often miss fine-grained errors, being designed for shorter texts or lacking datasets with verified inaccuracies. We introduce DOCCI-Critique, a benchmark with 1,400 VLM-generated paragraph captions (100 images, 14 VLMs) featuring over 10,216 sentence-level human annotations of factual correctness and explanatory rationales for errors, all within paragraph context. Building on this, we develop VNLI-Critique, a model for automated sentence-level factuality classification and critique generation. We highlight three key applications: (1) VNLI-Critique demonstrates robust generalization, validated by state-of-the-art performance on the M-HalDetect benchmark and strong results in CHOCOLATE claim verification. (2) The VNLI-Critique driven AutoRater for DOCCI-Critique provides reliable VLM rankings, showing excellent alignment with human factuality judgments (e.g., 0.98 Spearman). (3) An innovative Critic-and-Revise pipeline, where critiques from VNLI-Critique guide LLM-based corrections, achieves substantial improvements in caption factuality (e.g., a 46% gain on DetailCaps-4870). Our work offers a crucial benchmark alongside practical tools, designed to significantly elevate the standards for fine-grained evaluation and foster the improvement of VLM image understanding. A Recipe for Improving Remote Sensing VLM Zero Shot Generalization

Aviad Barzilai, Yotam Gigi, Amr Helmy, Vered Silverman, Yehonathan Refael, Bolous Jaber, Tomer Shekel, George Leifman 等 9 位作者

Foundation models have had a significant impact across various AI applications, enabling use cases that were previously impossible. Contrastive Visual Language Models (VLMs), in particular, have outperformed other techniques in many tasks. However, their prevalence in remote sensing (RS) is still limited, due to the scarcity of diverse remote-sensing visual-language datasets. In this work we introduce two novel image-caption datasets for training of remote sensing foundation models. The first dataset pairs aerial and satellite imagery with captions generated by Gemini using landmarks extracted from Google Maps. The second dataset utilizes public web images and their corresponding alt-text, filtered for the remote sensing domain, resulting in a diverse dataset with greater breadth in image styles and subject matter. These datasets are used to pre-train the MaMMUT~\citep{kuo2023mammutsimplearchitecturejoint} VLM architecture, resulting in state-of-the-art generalization performance in zero-shot cross-modal retrieval on well-known public benchmarks. Finally, we present our ongoing research to distill image-level knowledge gained in the VLM contrastive training procedure to enhance the model's localization ability. Specifically, we iteratively generate pseudo-labels for image regions based on the model's attention maps and use these labels for further training. To mitigate noisy attention maps and create robust segmentation masks, we introduce a novel attention-pooling mechanism called the Smooth-Attention-Operation.
