是课程设计还是简单起步?在四足机器人上对无监督环境设计的基准测试

Is It the Curriculum or Just the Easy Start? Benchmarking Unsupervised Environment Design on Quadrupeds

Jakub Gilewicz, Dominik Galus, Piotr Wojdas

Unsupervised environment design (UED) methods such as PLR, ACCEL, SFL and PAIRED are compared mostly on 2D mazes, grid worlds and BipedalWalker, while terrain curricula for legged robots are hand-designed and evaluated against a few baselines. We present a benchmark that runs fourteen UED, domain-randomisation and robotics curricula under one protocol on five 3D quadrupeds in MuJoCo MJX: the closed-chain W01-TEK and the open-chain Unitree Go1 and Go2, Google Barkour vB and Boston Dynamics Spot. Levels are vectors of eight interpretable terrain parameters, and all curricula drive the same PPO student at matched environment-step budgets. The evaluation reports success on random and held-out structured terrains, interquartile means with stratified bootstrap intervals, capability envelopes and a level-by-level domination comparison. We compare methods within each robot and report, per level set, the top group of methods not significantly below the best. No method is in the top group on every robot and level set. Methods with easy or low-difficulty training levels, curated or not, fill the top groups on in-distribution random levels of Go1 and Barkour, and of W01-TEK apart from PAIRED+BiBC. The success-driven terrain curriculum from legged-robot practice is in a top group most often, domain randomisation on uniform levels in none, and PAIRED in none outside Spot, where the fourteen methods lie within 3.8 points on random levels of difficulty 0.25. On three robots the leader on in-distribution random levels is not the leader on held-out terrain. We collect the results into a per-robot guide to choosing a curriculum.

Who Owns Digital News, and Who Gets Cited: Measuring Media Concentration Across 77 Countries and Seven AI Systems

Peter Carragher, Kathleen M. Carley

Digital news outlets compete for audience attention. Search engines equipped with generative AI systems such as Google's AI overviews increasingly decide where that attention goes, as well as the revenue it represents. Yet, the lack of a consistent data collection infrastructure between national-level regulatory bodies has hindered between-country comparative analysis of media concentration, and with it any assessment of how these intermediaries reshape digital news markets. To address this issue, we compile an ownership dataset for 9,761 digital news outlets drawn from Wikipedia and Wikidata, achieving high agreement with independently compiled US and UK news directories. Using this dataset, we derive traffic-weighted concentration indices for 77 countries. We find that journalists report more owner pressure in countries with higher concentration, and that outlet-level measures understate concentration, with owner-level indices a median 1.30x higher. Applying concentration measures to AI-mediated news discovery, we find that citation distributions from major AI systems are up to 2.08x more concentrated than traffic, and that if Google AI Overviews mediated all organic search, the resulting rise in US concentration would be several times that associated with highly regulated media mergers and acquisitions. Finally, our analyses indicate that AI systems preferentially cite state-controlled media outlets when prompted in that country's native language. Together, these findings raise concerns about the effect AI systems may have on digital media. We release the dataset to enable the monitoring of digital news globally, so that the impact of disruptive technologies on digital media markets can be tracked as they emerge.

Mind The Gap (MTG-AD): Dataset and Fine-grained Evaluation for End-to-End Inline Audio Descriptions

Subhashini Venugopalan, Jenny Tan, Taylor Roper, Jimmy Tobin, Anton Kast, Alicia Martin, Sam Sepah, Amy Pavel

Audio descriptions (AD) are essential for making visual media accessible to blind and low-vision (BLV) users. While Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) offer a scalable solution for generating audio descriptions on-demand, their performance on ``inline'' audio descriptions -- which must fit within existing silences in a video -- remains under-explored, particularly for diverse user-generated content (UGC). We present a comprehensive investigation into MLLM-generated inline audio descriptions. First, we introduce MTG-AD, a professionally annotated dataset of 36 hours of videos, each averaging $\sim$5 mins. and 8k+ descriptions in total, co-created by paired blind and sighted AD professionals to provide a high-quality benchmark for this task. Second, we propose MTG-AD-Eval, an evaluation framework based on audio description expert guidelines that provides fine-grained, reference-free actionable metrics for model improvement. Crucially, our framework evaluates the end-to-end task: it renders the generated scripts into audio tracks to assess their fit within the original video's natural silences, minimizing disruptive overlaps. Our analysis across frontier MLLMs reveals that while models accurately describe visual events and substantially reduce speech overlaps, gaps persist in narrative pacing and flow. Finally, we empirically validate that our automated and reference-free metrics correlate significantly with human quality ratings from sighted raters and 7 BLV participants, finding that while users narrowly prefer human-authored audio descriptions, they find MLLM-generated audio descriptions highly beneficial for comprehension. We provide actionable system design guidance and release MTG-AD at https://hf.co/datasets/google/mind-the-gap-inline-ad and MTG-AD-Eval at https://github.com/google/mtg-ad.

ARCANA: A Benchmark for Abstraction and Analogical Reasoning

Ruqi Chen, Zilei Wang, Wei Wang

Analogical reasoning is widely considered a fundamental component of human intelligence. Few benchmarks are designed to explicitly test far analogical reasoning - reasoning between domains that are superficially dissimilar yet share deep relational or structural similarities. In this work, we introduce an analogical reasoning benchmark called Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus of ANAlogy (ARCANA). The tasks of ARCANA require performing far analogical mappings from real-world objects or physical phenomena to abstract grid-based transformations, different from the well-known ARC-AGI benchmark which primarily emphasized innate human priors. We validate ARCANA through a human study, demonstrating that humans solve these tasks reliably. In contrast, evaluations across a range of large language models show a distinct performance gap compared to humans, revealing systematic failure modes that remain challenging for current models. To address this gap, we propose ConceptSIR, a reasoning framework based on concept slippage, introspection, and reflection. Experiments demonstrate that ConceptSIR enables standard LLMs to solve several challenging ARCANA tasks that were unsolved by direct prompting in our evaluation. Overall, our results suggest that far analogical reasoning remains an open problem for contemporary LLMs. All the materials are available at sites.google.com/view/arcanacogtest. The complete codebase, including benchmark, and ConceptSIR, is publicly available at https://github.com/density-11/arcana-test. All ARCANA data and task instances can be accessed and explored at https://arcanacogtest.org/.

Does the Citation Matter? Quality, Grounding, and Physician-Rubric Accuracy of Google's AI Overviews for Medical Information

Sam Agnoli, Brigid Reilly, Lily Barna, Emőke-Ágnes Horvát

Google's AI Overviews (AIOs) are the first result users encounter when searching the web, shifting the work of selecting and evaluating sources from the user to Gemini. This may be especially consequential for health information, given that Google's traditional algorithm was designed to prioritize quality sources, and inaccurate information carries health risks. We evaluated 3,611 benchmark health questions, comparing each AIO against that question's top five traditional results on source selection and quality. We also evaluated the AIOs' statement grounding in their cited sources and how accurate AIOs were against physician-written rubrics. Overviews appeared for 96.4% of questions but drew on substantially different evidence than traditional search: only 44.4% of the top five results were cited by the corresponding AIO, which instead overrepresented commercial health publishers (e.g., WebMD, Healthline) at the expense of academic and government sources (e.g., Cleveland Clinic, National Health Service). AIO-cited pages scored lower than traditional results on four of six well-established credibility criteria. The grounding of AIO statements to their sources was poor: after correcting for classifier error, an estimated 56.7% of cited statements were supported by their cited page, and a further 20.8% of all statements were factual claims with no citation at all. When AIOs were graded against physicians' rubrics, they earned 38.2% of all available points (e.g., accuracy 54.2%, completeness 21.6%), and among the subset of AIOs whose physician rubric anticipated a specific inaccurate or potentially harmful claim, 22.2% of AIOs contained the harmful content. Notably, the accuracy of AIOs was unrelated to the grounding of their statements. We recommend AIO literacy interventions for users and holding AIOs at least to Google's own health-ranking standards.

Do Open-Source Video Ad Clients Follow VAST 4.3? An Empirical Study of Player Conformance

Prashant Chaudhary

Context. Video ads reach streaming and connected-TV apps through VAST documents, and companies count ads from the HTTP requests the player's client library sends. A tracking error can leave playback intact and surface later as disagreeing counts. Objective. To measure how far open-source VAST clients meet the player duties of VAST 4.3, whether verdicts depend on the runtime, what generated inputs add, and when deviations were introduced. Method. A catalog of 108 requirements was extracted from the specification. Six open-source clients in eight configurations ran against 69 crafted test vectors and the IAB's sample tags, under Node.js and in five browsers on three engines, with every request recorded. Grids, fuzzing and a sweep over 36 releases extend the catalog; Google's closed IMA SDK is a comparison. Results. The open-source clients have 78 findings and 3 to 21 must-level deviations per configuration. None of the tested open-source clients that follow redirect (Wrapper) chains fills the required macros in a Wrapper's request; the archived IMA 3.794.0 configuration tested does. One library's timeout throws an exception no caller can catch, ending a Node.js process. In a pod (ads played back to back), one player credits a finishing ad's completion to the next ad, fixed in release 5.3.0. A library can conform under jsdom and deviate in every tested Chrome- and Safari-family browser. Conclusions. The tested clients diverge on the duties other companies use to count and diagnose ads. A shared conformance suite run in real browsers could expose most graded deviations; the harness and vectors are released.

Mentorship, Interrupted: How GenAI Disrupts the GSoC Pipeline and Why Mentors Matter More

Ruizhe Xing, Zixuan Feng, Mary Radomile, Stephanie Taylor, Sophia Vargas, Anita Sarma

Generative AI (GenAI) makes open source software (OSS) contributions cheaper to produce, and it makes them say less about the people who produced them. In OSS mentoring, that matters: mentors judge what newcomers understand from their work, and newcomers learn from mentors' feedback. We studied how GenAI is changing mentoring in Google Summer of Code (GSoC), a program in which today's mentees can become tomorrow's mentors. We screened every thread on GSoC's restricted mentors' mailing list from November 2022 through March 2026 and interviewed 15 mentors and organization administrators. GenAI helped with onboarding, coordination, and first-pass review, but proposals, entry contributions, and mentees' answers became weaker evidence of what newcomers could do. Mentors made up the difference by checking, and that checking drew on the same time and goodwill the program needs to renew itself; one organization had withdrawn from GSoC. Responses ranged from banning GenAI to accepting it, and the boundary an organization drew determined who did the checking. We propose AIM, a decision framework that links acceptable GenAI use, integration into the mentoring pipeline, and mentoring capacity, to help organizations choose responses they can sustain.

EmbeddingGemma 2: Unified and Efficient Multimodal Representations

Henrique Schechter Vera, Sahil Dua, Jovan Andonov, Sara Smoot, Sebastian Russo, Ivan Llanos, Max Matveev, Jae Hyeon Yoo 等 73 位作者

We present EmbeddingGemma 2, an open multimodal embedding model which natively represents text, images, audio, video, and combinations thereof in a unified space. Our approach introduces improvements such as simplified per-layer embeddings and a multi-stage curriculum with modality and objective progression which ensure strong quality across unimodal, cross-modal, and mixed-modal evaluations. Notably, in comprehensive embedding benchmarks across all modalities, EmbeddingGemma 2 establishes a new Pareto frontier, outperforming both specialist models and models two to twelve times larger. Furthermore, our design offers flexibility for resource-constrained environments, supporting selective modality encoder loading, adjustable vision token budgets, truncatable embedding dimensions, and quantized weights. We present ablations analyzing key decisions and release EmbeddingGemma 2 to promote further research.

Does The Way You Plan Matter? An Empirical Study of Planning Representations for LLM Web Agents

Alejandra Zambrano, Sara Vera Marjanovic, Imene Kerboua, Xing Han Lù, Leila Kosseim

Despite recent advances, LLM-based web agents still struggle with limited exploration, omission of critical steps, and sensitivity to task constraints. Prior work suggests that many of these failures stem from weaknesses in planning, yet the impact of alternative natural language plan representations remains unexplored. To address this, we introduce PlanAhead, a static planner-executor framework that evaluates the impact of plan representation on agent performance. We first automatically categorize WebArena tasks into 3 difficulty levels, enabling consistent difficulty grading without human annotation. Then we systematically evaluate 4 different plan representations on the tasks categorized as hard: sequential subgoals, narrative, pseudocode, and checklist; across different families of multimodal LLM-powered agents(OpenAI, Alibaba, and Google). To account for stochastic variability, we introduce a novel decomposition of agent Success Rate (SR) into 2 interpretable evaluation metrics: Achievement Rate (AR) and Solved-Task Consistency (STC). Our results show that both, the plan formulation and the underlying LLM generating the plan, significantly influence web-agent robustness and task success.

From the Rock Floor to the Cloud: A Systematic Survey of State-of-the-Art NLP in Battery Life Cycle

Tosin Adewumi, Martin Karlsson, Marcus Liwicki, Mikael Sjödahl, Lama Alkhaled, Rihab Gargouri, Nudrat Habib

This work presents a systematic review of the application of natural language processing (NLP) along the entire battery life cycle, instead of the review of one stage or method, and introduces a novel conceptual technical language processing (TLP) framework for the European Union (EU)'s proposed digital battery passport (DBP) and other general battery predictions, as the main objective. It follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method and employs three reputable databases or search engines, including Google Scholar, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Xplore (IEEE Xplore), and Scopus, searched in October, 2025. The search criteria are 'text', 'language processing', and 'battery' while the exclusion criteria are non-relevant papers and those published before 2017, which was applied to all databases, except IEEE Xplore because it turned up fewer results. Consequently, it assesses 274 scientific papers before the critical review of the final 66 relevant papers. We publicly provide artifacts of the review for validation and possible reproducibility. The findings show that new NLP tasks are emerging in the battery domain, which facilitate materials discovery and other stages of the life cycle. Notwithstanding, challenges remain, such as the lack of standard benchmarks. The proposed TLP framework, which incorporates agentic AI and optimized prompts, may be apt for tackling some of the challenges.

Agaram 2.5B: The First Tamil-First Language Model Trained from Scratch with Tool Calling. A Playbook for Under-Represented Languages

Ramchand Kumaresan, Madhusudhanan G, Kaushik Kezendirane

We present Agaram 2.5B, a Tamil-first language model trained from scratch that converses in Tamil script, romanized Tanglish and English, and calls tools. Our first model, Agaram 1.5B, guided the new base, tokenizer and fine-tuning recipe: we pretrained a new 2.53B-parameter base on 50 billion tokens, 58% of them Tamil, with a tokenizer that needs 1.55 tokens per Tamil word where Qwen2.5's needs 9.44. A four-day public preview of our first 2.5B chat model showed where it fell short with real users, and we rebuilt supervised fine-tuning around what we saw, on 222,662 records. The released model scores above Sarvam-1 in all six translation directions we measured (FLORES chrF 56.9 into Tamil and 55.4 into English), chooses the expected tool on all 25 prompts of a tool set that was used during checkpoint selection and whose schemas appear in training, with exact arguments on 16, and was preferred over the preview model by an LLM judge on 100 sealed human-written prompts (net preference +30 points, 95% interval +14.5 to +45.0). On FLORES it also scores above Google's Gemma 4 E4B-it and our fine-tuned variant of it in both directions, with 2.53B parameters against E4B's 4.5B effective parameters. Factual knowledge and reliable refusal of harmful requests remain open problems, which we set out as future work. The base and chat weights and GGUF files are released under Apache-2.0, and this report gives a full account of the data, training and evaluation as a playbook for building language models for under-represented languages.

Grasp-Then-Plan with Failure Attribution: A Closed Two-Stage Framework for Precise and Generalizable Robotic Manipulation

Jiahao Xu, Peiyuan Wang, Hanzhuo Zhang, Zihao Yu, Tianyu Fu, Hao Chen, Xuanhao Xiang, Zixuan Li 等 11 位作者

In robotic manipulation, the tight coupling between grasping and motion planning often obscures the true source of failure, leading to inefficient trial-and-error. To enable efficient long-horizon manipulation, we propose GTP-FA (Grasp-Then-Plan with Failure Attribution), a task-oriented two-stage 'grasp-then-plan' framework that generates grasp candidates and performs downstream motion planning conditioned on the selected grasp. Given a failed manipulation trajectory, we learn a failure attribution model that generalizes to unseen grasps and produces a stable distribution over failure modes for diagnosis-guided optimization. Based on these attribution results, we then optimize both modules in a diagnosis-driven manner: on the grasping side, we inject task-level priors and risk penalties into grasp candidate scoring and optimization to suppress unstable or task-incompatible grasps; on the planning side, we target high-risk initial states through data collection and fine-tuning to address genuine planning bottlenecks. We evaluate the proposed framework in both simulation and real-robot experiments, and show that GTP-FA improves the corresponding base learners across RL, IL, diffusion-policy, and VLA-based settings, achieving substantially higher overall task success rates.

They Will See Johnny's Message: A Measurement Study of Post-Quantum Cryptography Across Email Delivery Paths

Jaehwan Park, Sunghyun Park, Kevin Nam, Doowon Kim

Harvest-now, decrypt-later (HNDL) attacks make the transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) urgent for email. This paper presents a systematic measurement that jointly examines PQC deployment across email service stages, negotiation by communicating peers, and usable message encryption. Endpoint-level support alone does not establish PQC readiness across email workflows because submission, relay, and access use independently negotiated Transport Layer Security (TLS) connections. We therefore combine three snapshots of relay, submission, access, and webmail services associated with the Tranco Top~1M domains with controlled tests of mail clients, sending servers, and OpenPGP and S/MIME implementations. Our measurements reveal a transition concentrated among a few providers, with available capability not consistently translating into actual use. Fewer than half of the domains in each service panel support PQC, and Google alone accounts for approximately 87\% of hybrid-capable relay domains. Only two of eight tested sending providers negotiate PQC with our receiver, although five accept it inbound. When TLS groups are restricted to PQC, four of the six incompatible senders fall back to plaintext where unencrypted SMTP remains permitted. At the message layer, limited native key generation, key-format incompatibilities, and backend integration failures further constrain usable PQC encryption.

The Geometry of Emotion Representations Across Scale, Depth, and Instruction Tuning

Adam Hollowell

We measure the emotion geometry of six LLMs spanning Google's Gemma 2 family. Using an extraction pipeline established by Sofroniew et al. (2026) on Claude Sonnet 4.5 and replicated by Hollowell (2026) on Gemma 2 27B base, we compare emotion geometry across base and instruction-tuned variants of Gemma 2 2B, 9B, and 27B. First, all six model cells exhibit the core emotion geometry. A linear map fit between two cells places held-out emotions nearest their own vectors in the target model. Across all fifteen model pairs, fit in one direction each, this failed exactly once, and the median rank was 1 in every pair. Linear maps refit on cleaned embedding-table vectors recover every held-out emotion at rank 1 in all thirty ordered pairs. Second, scale spreads the geometry's variance across more directions without weakening its tie to valence. The leading component's share of variance falls from 31.6 percent (2B) to 29.8 (9B) to 26.7 (27B) in the base models and from 31.9 (2B) to 29.2 (9B) to 27.3 (27B) in the tuned ones, while its correlation with human valence ratings stays between .71 and .78 in all six models. Third, we project each emotion vector onto the output vocabulary and ask at what depth the vector's own emotion word enters the top 10,000 of the 256,000 tokens. In the 2B and 9B models the median emotion word is there from layer 0, while in the 27B models it begins near chance, stays outside the top 10,000 for half the network, and enters at layer 23 in one step. Fourth, tuning leaves every registered analysis-layer measure within its floor. At every size, valence correlation rises and arousal correlation falls by amounts within their floors, the latter against prediction. PC2's variance share also falls, with a pooled decrease significant after correction. Mid-late layer stability exceeds its floor and traces to base 27B's final layer. Code, data, and audit reports are released.

GaussianSpline: Adaptive Bézier Splines for Highly Dynamic 4D Gaussian Splatting

Tom Yachil, Andrei Sharf

We present GaussianSpline, a dynamic 4D Gaussian Splatting method that models per-Gaussian motion using adaptive, non-uniform piecewise cubic Bézier splines. Unlike approaches based on global deformations, fixed-order polynomials, or uniformly parameterized splines, GaussianSpline jointly learns the Bézier control points and the temporal partition of each Gaussian's trajectory. This adaptive representation allocates greater temporal capacity to highly dynamic regions while maintaining compact trajectories for near-static regions, enabling high-fidelity reconstruction of complex and rapidly changing motion. To jointly achieve globally smooth motion and local adaptivity, we enforce $G^1$ continuity between consecutive Bézier segments using a reflection-based constraint on their control points. This produces smooth, fully differentiable trajectories while preserving the flexibility of non-uniform temporal parameterization. Experiments on the Neural 3D Video benchmark, the Google Immersive dataset, as well as on synthetic scenes demonstrate that GaussianSpline substantially improves reconstruction quality in scenes with highly non-uniform and challenging dynamics, while maintaining competitive performance on general dynamic scenes compared with state-of-the-art 4D Gaussian Splatting methods.

Lost in Translation: Investigating Systematic Discrepancies between Parallel English and Chinese Names of American Chinese Restaurants

Hang Jiang, Nanxi Liu, Tiantian Wang, Cassandra Overney, Rukun Zhang, Artemisia Luk, Diyi Yang, Deb Roy 等 9 位作者

Given that the Chinese are one of the oldest ethnic groups to immigrate to the US, their cuisine have become central to the US dining scene and an interesting avenue to study how Chinese immigrants have culturally adapted into American life. In that regard, previous research has focused on analyzing the English names that Chinese restaurants adopt, e.g., finding the use of familiar and typical words. To investigate how Chinese immigrants have culturally integrated in the US depending on social, geographic and demographic contexts, we investigate in this work the under-explored relationship between the Chinese and English names of American Chinese restaurants. Specifically, we conduct a study on 3,172 Chinese restaurants (10% of the total on Google Maps) sampled across the US. We present 8-dimension name frames to capture the underlying meanings behind names and create the NameFrames dataset containing 884 annotated parallel Chinese/English names. We also built an NLP pipeline to analyze the semantic discrepancies between names with both frame-based and embedding-based distance metrics. Our frame analysis shows that English names more often emphasize Location and Specialty, while Chinese names more often emphasize Positivity and Ambiance. Furthermore, we observe that for Chinese restaurants located in urban areas, those in counties with a higher concentration of Chinese population, or those that are relatively new, the discrepancies between the English and Chinese names are noticeably larger. Finally, interviews with 10 Chinese restaurant owners reveal additional interesting insights regarding naming conventions.

Impact of AI Search Summaries on Website Traffic: Evidence from Google AI Overviews and Wikipedia

Mehrzad Khosravi, Hema Yoganarasimhan

Search engines increasingly display AI-generated answers above organic links, potentially displacing traffic to upstream publishers. We estimate the impact of Google's AI Overviews (AIO) on Wikipedia's search traffic using AIO's staggered geographic rollout and Wikipedia's multilingual structure. Our difference-in-differences design compares monthly external-search referrals to English Wikipedia articles with referrals to the same articles in German and French, and finds that default AIO availability reduced English search traffic by 5.45% and 4.82%, respectively. Our results suggest that answer-producing digital intermediaries can materially reallocate attention away from informational publishers, with implications for content monetization, search platform design, and policy.

AI 速览:提出并展示地理空间基础模型 PDFM 如何以可泛化的地点表征补充传统流行病学工作流,并在多国多任务案例中改善公共卫生监测。

The efficacy of traditional disease prediction is limited by spatial gaps and temporal lags, which impact the timing and targets of resource deployments. Outbreaks escalate undetected, chronic disease burdens are quantified years later, and at-risk populations in data-sparse regions remain unaddressed. Planetary geospatial foundation models complement existing epidemiological workflows to provide operational improvements, encoding multimodal search, mobility, and environmental signals into generalizable place representations. As illustrations of this complementarity, we present independent global health case studies of Google Earth AI's Population Dynamics Foundation Model (PDFM) -- a foundation model for geospatial inference -- across four domains (vaccine-preventable, communicable, noncommunicable, maternal mental health), five tasks (spatial extrapolation, interpolation/nowcasting, probabilistic forecasting, prospective forecasting, risk stratification), and four countries (USA, Canada, Mexico, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Across these case studies, PDFM addresses critical surveillance gaps across domains: improving US-Canada border MMR vaccination coverage predictions by capturing cross-border behavioral spillovers domestic models miss; nowcasting cardiovascular disease to accelerate data availability; enhancing short-term municipal Mexican dengue forecasts for timely outbreak vector control; improving forecasts of cholera hotspots; and adding a transferable signal to individual-level postpartum-depression risk prediction in US states the model had never seen, while not replacing individual socioeconomic data or closing demographic screening gaps. Together, these results showcase capabilities of geospatial foundation models for public health surveillance.

Google Earth AI is a family of geospatial AI models, together with an agent that orchestrates them. We present this agent, Google Earth AI's Geospatial Reasoning agent (GRA), a Gemini-powered research system that combines geospatial data sources, foundation models, and tools to answer questions about our planet. GRA organizes these into modular domain skills and pairs them with upfront geospatial planning to decompose complex queries into multi-stage workflows. Evaluating such systems is hard: real-world problems admit multiple valid workflows, require data discovery across large catalogs, and rely on evolving ground truth. We introduce two benchmarks and release their development splits. GeoExpertQueries poses complex analytical problems grounded in practitioner use cases and refined by geospatial experts; each is paired with a consensus golden workflow from three independent experts and scored by a human-validated, tool-agnostic autorater. GeoKTools consists of templated queries with deterministic reference solvers that systematically vary the number of required tool types. We also use two external benchmarks, CBGB and UnivEARTH; the latter we find to be saturated. To isolate the contribution of GRA's tools and its agentic orchestration, we compare four configurations, each with Gemini 3.1 Pro and 3.8 Flash: a standalone LLM, the LLM with basic tools, the LLM with GRA's skills and tools but without its upfront planning and execution guidance, and GRA itself. With at most basic tools, an advanced model recovers much of the answer on templated queries but satisfies only a small fraction of the expert workflows on open-ended problems; GRA performs well on both. The largest step comes from GRA's skills and tools; on open-ended problems, its planning and execution guidance add a further gain with Gemini 3.8 Flash, letting Flash match or exceed Pro at lower cost.

Earth Observation (EO) provides critical planetary data for environmental monitoring, disaster management, climate science, and other scientific domains. In this work we ask: Are AI systems ready for reliable Earth Observation? To answer this, we introduce UnivEARTH, a coding benchmark of 408 yes/no questions from NASA Earth Observatory articles across 7 various topics and over 15 satellite instruments and sources. Using Google Earth Engine API as a tool in a zero-shot setup, LLM agents achieve an accuracy of 40.0% where the code fails to run over 44% of the time. To better understand LLM agent behavior, we also analyze the impact of using the JavaScript API versus Python and the effect of providing documentation. Furthermore, we find that using a Reflexion framework significantly reduces errors: Claude-4.5-Sonnet, Gemini-2.5-Pro, and GPT-5 accuracies rise to around 60%. However, these results remain only marginally above random chance. Taken together, our findings identify significant challenges to be solved before AI agents can automate earth observation, and suggest paths forward.

AI 速览:提出自主AI系统PPE,从自然语言查询出发自动完成多模态地理空间数据检索、融合与模型搜索,并在多个健康、风险与流行病预测任务上报告优于专家基线。

Addressing critical global challenges, from food security and disaster risk to disease outbreaks and socio-economic vulnerability, demands high-fidelity geospatial modeling. However, building predictive planetary models remains bottlenecked by a fragmented data ecosystem, requiring manual data retrieval, multimodal data curation and fusion along with iterative model selection. We present the Planetary Prediction Engine (PPE), an autonomous AI system that executes this end-to-end workflow directly from natural-language queries. PPE synthesizes multimodal datasets on the fly, retrieving spatiotemporally relevant covariates across open-web and Earth observation platforms (Data Commons, Google Earth Engine) and fusing them with geospatial foundation model embeddings (PDFM, AlphaEarth). Simultaneously, it searches over task-tailored model architecture families with automated overfitting guards. Across diverse tasks, geographies, and scientific domains, PPE consistently outperforms state-of-the-art or manually tuned expert baselines. For US spatial regression, PPE improves mean $R^2$ across 21 CDC health indicators (76.8% vs. 60.0%), FEMA national risk indices (64.9% vs. 60.0%), and the Social Vulnerability Index (66.2% vs. 58.6%). For spatial downscaling in data-scarce settings, PPE integrates localized proxies to double baseline accuracy in Nigerian food security indicators ($R^2$ of 66.1% vs. 31.5%). For epidemiological nowcasting of the 2026 DRC Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, PPE achieves a Recall@10 of 83.3% (identifying 15 of 18 newly invaded health zones across five weekly forecasts), a +10.3 percentage-point improvement over the public state-of-the-art modeling (~73%). By combining autonomous multimodal planetary data discovery with targeted model optimization, PPE lowers the technical barrier to planetary-scale analytics, enabling rapid, customized, expert-level deployment.

AI 速览:GrandCode 是一个面向竞技编程的多智能体强化学习系统,作者报告其在三场 Codeforces 实时比赛中均排名第一,超过所有人类参赛者。

Competitive programming remains one of the last few human strongholds in coding against AI. The best AI system to date still underperforms the best humans competitive programming: the most recent best result, Google's Gemini~3 Deep Think, attained 8th place even not being evaluated under live competition conditions. In this work, we introduce GrandCode, a multi-agent RL system designed for competitive programming. The capability of GrandCode is attributed to two key factors: (1) It orchestrates a variety of agentic modules (hypothesis proposal, solver, test generator, summarization, etc) and jointly improves them through post-training and online test-time RL; (2) We introduce Agentic GRPO specifically designed for multi-stage agent rollouts with delayed rewards and the severe off-policy drift that is prevalent in agentic RL. GrandCode is the first AI system that consistently beats all human participants in live contests of competitive programming: in the most recent three Codeforces live competitions, i.e., Round~1087 (Mar 21, 2026), Round~1088 (Mar 28, 2026), and Round~1089 (Mar 29, 2026), GrandCode placed first in all of them, beating all human participants, including legendary grandmasters. GrandCode shows that AI systems have reached a point where they surpass the strongest human programmers on the most competitive coding tasks.

On the Interpolation Effect of Score Smoothing in Diffusion Models

Zhengdao Chen

Diffusion models have achieved remarkable progress in various domains with an intriguing ability to produce new data that do not exist in the training set. In this work, we study the hypothesis that such creativity arises from the neural network backbone learning a smoothed version of the empirical score function, which guides the denoising dynamics to generate data points that interpolate the training data. Focusing mainly on settings where the training set lies uniformly in a one-dimensional subspace, we elucidate the interplay between score smoothing and the denoising dynamics with analytical solutions and numerical experiments, demonstrating how smoothing the score function can cause the denoised data samples to interpolate the training set along the subspace. Moreover, we present theoretical and empirical evidence that learning score functions with neural networks - either with or without explicit regularization - can naturally achieve a similar effect, including when the data belong to simple nonlinear manifolds.

Firoj Alam Qatar Computing Research Institute, Fatema Ahmad Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Ali Ezzat Shahroor Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Mohamed Bayan Kmainasi University of Qatar, Elisa Sartori, Giovanni Da San Martino University of Padua, Abul Hasnat, Raian Ali Hamad Bin Khalifa University

Misinformation on social media undermines informed decision-making and public trust. Prebunking offers a proactive complement by helping users recognize manipulation tactics before they encounter them in the wild. We present CritiSense, a mobile media-literacy app that builds these skills through short, interactive challenges with instant feedback. It is the first multilingual (supporting nine languages) and modular platform, designed for rapid updates across topics and domains. We report a usability study with 93 users: 83.9% expressed overall satisfaction and 90.1% rated the app as easy to use. Qualitative feedback indicates that CritiSense helps improve digital literacy skills. Overall, it provides a multilingual prebunking platform and a testbed for measuring the impact of microlearning on misinformation resilience. Over 6 months, we have reached 500+ active users. It is freely available on the Apple App Store and Google [Play Store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.critisense hl=en).

Comparing human and language models sentence processing difficulties on complex structures

Samuel Joseph Amouyal School of Computer Science, Tel Aviv University, Aya Meltzer-Asscher Tel Aviv University, Jonathan Berant Google and Tel Aviv University

Large language models (LLMs) that fluently converse with humans are a reality - but do LLMs experience human-like processing difficulties? We systematically compare human and LLM sentence comprehension across seven challenging linguistic structures. We collect sentence comprehension data from humans and five families of state-of-the-art LLMs, varying in size and training procedure in a unified experimental framework. Our results show LLMs overall struggle on the target structures, but especially on garden path (GP) sentences. Indeed, while the strongest models achieve near perfect accuracy on non-GP structures (93.7% for GPT-5), they struggle on GP structures (46.8% for GPT-5). Additionally, when ranking structures based on average performance, rank correlation between humans and models increases with parameter count. For each target structure, we also collect data for their matched baseline without the difficult structure. Comparing performance on the target vs. baseline sentences, the performance gap observed in humans holds for LLMs, with two exceptions: for models that are too weak performance is uniformly low across both sentence types, and for models that are too strong the performance is uniformly high. Together, these reveal convergence and divergence in human and LLM sentence comprehension, offering new insights into the similarity of humans and LLMs.

See2Refine: Vision-Language Feedback Improves LLM-Based eHMI Action Designers

Ding Xia The University of Tokyo, Xinyue Gui, Mark Colley University College London, University of London, Fan Gao, Zhongyi Zhou Google, Dongyuan Li The University of Tokyo and Institute of Science Tokyo, Renhe Jiang The University of Tokyo, Takeo Igarashi The University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology

Automated vehicles lack natural communication channels with other road users, making external Human-Machine Interfaces (eHMIs) essential for conveying intent and maintaining trust in shared environments. However, most eHMI studies rely on developer-crafted message-action pairs, which are difficult to adapt to diverse and dynamic traffic contexts. A promising alternative is to use Large Language Models (LLMs) as action designers that generate context-conditioned eHMI actions, yet such designers lack perceptual verification and typically depend on fixed prompts or costly human-annotated feedback for improvement. We present See2Refine, a human-free, closed-loop framework that uses vision-language models (VLMs) for perceptual evaluation as automated visual feedback to improve an LLM-based eHMI action designer. Given a driving context and a candidate eHMI action, the VLM evaluates the perceived appropriateness of the action, and this feedback is used to iteratively revise the designer’s outputs, enabling systematic refinement without human supervision. We evaluate our framework across three eHMI modalities (lightbar, eyes, and arm) and multiple LLM model sizes. Across settings, our framework consistently outperforms prompt-only LLM designers and manually specified baselines in both VLM-based metrics and human-subject evaluations. The results further indicate that the improvements are generalized across modalities and that VLM evaluations are reasonably aligned with human preferences in our controlled settings, supporting the robustness and effectiveness of See2Refine for scalable action design.

Large Language Models Are Bad Dice Players: LLMs Struggle to Generate Random Numbers from Statistical Distributions

Minda Zhao, Yilun Du Google, Mengyu Wang Harvard University

As large language models (LLMs) transition from chat interfaces to integral components of stochastic pipelines and systems approaching general intelligence, the ability to faithfully sample from specified probability distributions has become a functional requirement rather than a theoretical curiosity. We present the first large-scale, statistically powered audit of native probabilistic sampling in frontier LLMs, benchmarking 11 models across 15 distributions. To disentangle failure modes, we employ a dual-protocol design: Batch Generation, where a model produces N{=}1000 samples within one response, and Independent Requests, comprising N{=}1000 stateless calls. We observe a sharp protocol asymmetry: batch generation achieves only modest statistical validity, with a 7% median pass rate, while independent requests collapse almost entirely, with 10 of 11 models passing none of the distributions. Beyond this asymmetry, we reveal that sampling fidelity degrades monotonically with distributional complexity and aggravates as the sampling horizon N increases. Finally, we demonstrate how the propagation of these failures into downstream real-world application tasks introduces systematic biases: models fail to enforce uniform answer-position constraints in Multiple Choice Question generation and systematically violate demographic targets in attribute-constrained text-to-image prompt synthesis. These findings indicate that current LLMs lack a functional internal sampler, necessitating external tools for applications requiring statistical guarantees.

Are they lovers or friends? Evaluating LLMs’ Social Reasoning in English and Korean Dialogues

Eunsu Kim, Junyeong Park Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology, Juhyun Oh Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology, Kiwoong Park Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology, Seyoung Song KAIST, A. Seza Doğruöz Ghent University, Alice Oh Google and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Najoung Kim Boston University

As LLMs are increasingly deployed in real-world interactions, their social reasoning in interpersonal communication becomes critical. To explore their capabilities, we introduce SCRIPTS, a 1.1k-dialogue dataset in English and Korean, sourced from movie scripts and propose a social reasoning task based on SCRIPTS that evaluates the capacity of LLMs to infer the social relationships (e.g., friends, lovers) between speakers in each dialogue. Evaluating nine models on our task, current LLMs achieve around 75–80% on the English dataset and 58–69% in Korean, and models predict an Unlikely relationship in 10–25% of responses in both languages.Furthermore, we find that thinking models and chain-of-thought prompting provide minimal benefits for social reasoning and occasionally amplify social biases. In sum, there are significant limitations in current LLMs’ social reasoning capabilities, especially for Korean, highlighting the need for efforts to develop socially-aware LLMs across languages.

DocLens: A Tool-Augmented Multi-Agent Framework for Long Visual Document Understanding

Dawei Zhu, Rui Meng Google Cloud AI Research, Jiefeng Chen Google, Sujian Li Peking University, Tomas Pfister Google, Jinsung Yoon Google

Comprehending long visual documents, where information is distributed across extensive pages of text and visual elements, is a critical but challenging task for modern Vision-Language Models (VLMs). Existing approaches falter on a fundamental challenge: evidence localization. They struggle to retrieve relevant pages and overlook fine-grained details within visual elements, leading to limited performance and model hallucination. To address this, we propose DocLens, a tool-augmented multi-agent framework that effectively “zooms in” on evidence like a lens. It first navigates from the full document to specific visual elements on relevant pages, then employs a sampling-adjudication mechanism to generate a single, reliable answer. Paired with Gemini-2.5-Pro, DocLens achieves state-of-the-art performance on MMLongBench-Doc and FinRAGBench-V, surpassing even human experts. The framework’s superiority is particularly evident on vision-centric and unanswerable queries, demonstrating the power of its enhanced localization capabilities.
