YOLOF-MLD: A Multi-Level Distillation Framework for Efficient Object Detection

Xiaolong Wu, Liming Zheng, Zitong Liu, Yue Zheng

Efficient object detection on resource-constrained edge devices is essential for safety-critical applications such as fire-smoke monitoring. However, current lightweight frameworks, such as YOLO26, still rely on the parameter-dense multi-branch Feature Pyramid Network (FPN), preventing full exploitation of their lightweight advantage. Replacing FPN with YOLOF's single-input-single-output (SiSo) neck is a promising solution but causes substantial accuracy loss. To alleviate this, we propose YOLOF-MLD, a CPU-efficient multi-level distillation (MLD) framework that combines a YOLO26n backbone, a SiSo neck, and MLD. It aligns features at the backbone via sliced-semantics matching, neck with receptive-field matching, and response levels. On D-Fire and Annotated Fire-Smoke (AFS) datasets, YOLOF-MLD reduces the parameter count of YOLO26n by 35.7\% and achieves a 62.3\% speedup on Raspberry Pi 5, attaining 71.6% and 59.9% mAP@50, respectively, compared with 75.5% and 60.0% for YOLO26n. These results demonstrate a competitive accuracy--latency trade-off for edge deployment. Our code is available at https://github.com/XiaolongWU111/YOLOF---MLD/blob/main/README.md.

Can Image Agents Complete Visual Commissions? A Benchmark and Modular Framework

Tong Li, Lishuai Gao, Qi Zeng, Yifan Li, Cong Wei, Zhuoliang Kang, Xiaoming Wei

Visual commissions require image agents to integrate heterogeneous source materials, preserve requirements across dependent stages, and produce coordinated deliverables. Existing evaluations examine specific capabilities and execution settings, leaving end-to-end commission completion less understood. We introduce Visual Commission Bench (VCB), comprising 600 tasks across 12 categories and three complementary tiers, from capability-focused tasks to complete commissions. VCB uses 5,039 requirement checks and separate visual quality ratings to assess content correctness, visual realization, constraint preservation, and delivery completeness without prescribing an internal workflow. We present V-Protocol, a reference agent that dynamically composes reusable task, cognitive, and expression modules at inference time. Task modules organize delivery, cognitive modules derive content, and expression modules guide visual realization. The modules exchange structured intermediate artifacts, while a shared execution harness tracks artifact revisions and dependencies, manages tool execution, and checks completion. With the same controller and image generator as the agent baselines, V-Protocol achieves 69.0\% strict task success on VCB, compared with 42.0\% for SCOPE. On Mind-Bench, strict accuracy increases from 39.2\% to 45.4\%.

Knowledge-structured and evidence-aware semantic self-distillation for glomerular pathology foundation model

Visual foundation models learn rich pathological morphology but lack explicit concept-level supervision. Vision--language pretraining can provide this supervision but requires costly image--text pairs. Here, we introduce GloSAGE, a semantic self-distillation framework that uses lesion profiles predicted by a pretrained visual teacher to construct structured pathology descriptions. Reliability-guided selection identifies image--text anchors, while Knowledge-Structured Pathology Text Synthesis and Evidence-Guided Negative-pair Construction account for partially observed lesions. Image--text alignment trains projection layers while retaining the frozen visual encoder; an intermediate Semantic Transfer Layer supplies features for downstream tasks. Developed on GloMillion and evaluated across seven glomerulus- and case-level cohorts, GloSAGE supported zero-shot lesion recognition, image--text retrieval, hard-negative discrimination and concept-intervention analyses. It outperformed its source visual model in most lesion-recognition tasks and improved lesion grading, while supporting competitive case-level disease classification, injury grading and baseline renal function estimation. Ablations supported the combined contributions of knowledge-structured text and evidence-guided negatives, and the intermediate transfer layer improved mean lesion-recognition ROC-AUC relative to the complete projection output. A frozen language model conditioned on GloSAGE features generated glomerular descriptions. These findings suggest that teacher-derived lesion profiles can provide annotation-efficient semantic supervision for extending a glomerular visual foundation model.

Discrete visual tokens represent vision in a discrete form analogous to language, offering a native interface for multimodal modeling under a shared next-token prediction objective. However, quantization error is widely assumed to cause unavoidable semantic loss, fundamentally limiting the semantic fidelity of discrete visual tokens and positioning continuous visual representations as an intrinsic upper bound. Using multimodal understanding as a proxy for semantic fidelity, we revisit this assumption and find quantization error unreliable, as discrete representations with substantially larger errors can achieve better understanding. Instead, the effective bit budget of discrete indices emerges as a key determinant of downstream performance. However, existing quantizers eventually saturate as additional codebooks contribute progressively less semantic information. As one approach to alleviating this saturation, we introduce Factorized Vector Quantization, which quantizes complementary, fixed-dimensional views of the visual feature with symmetric parallel codebooks. It continues to improve at larger bit budgets, ultimately matching continuous visual representations in multimodal understanding. Trained on industrial-scale multimodal data, our model achieves state-of-the-art performance among discrete-representation models, outperforming UniAR and Emu3-Chat by 22.8% and 59.2%, respectively, on a nine-metric average. To our knowledge, it is also the first discrete-representation model competitive with strong continuous-representation models such as Qwen3-VL, including on fine-grained OCR tasks. We further identify the key principles and a practical recipe enabling this competitiveness. These results and insights support the potential of discrete visual representations to underpin large-scale native multimodal foundation models. VDE Bench: Evaluating The Capability of Image Editing Models to Modify Visual Documents

Hongzhu Yi, Yujia Yang, Yuanxiang Wang, Tong Li, Zhenyu Guan, Tianyu Zong, Jiahuan Chen, Chenxi Bao 等 21 位作者

Image editing models can modify visual content through natural language, but editing dense documents requires precise local changes amid tightly coupled text, tables, and layout. We introduce VDE Bench, an evaluation resource for studying instruction-guided editing of Chinese and English document images. VDE Bench contains 3,506 instruction-guided image editing samples, including 1,578 text-region edits and 1,928 table-region edits. The benchmark pairs editing instructions and reference images with annotated editing regions and structured OCR outputs. Its evaluation protocol combines region-level and full-page measurements to assess textual correctness, structural fidelity, and visual content preservation. By focusing on the interaction between local edits and their surrounding document context, VDE Bench complements existing visual text editing benchmarks and provides a resource for diagnosing document-specific editing failures.

ProactEgoMem: Benchmarking Proactive Memory in Streaming Egocentric Video

Ruotong Liao, Meikel Kokowski, Xiaoxiao Sun, Yongqin Xian, Laura Bravo Sánchez, Shiye Su, Federico Tombari, Serena Yeung-Levy 等 9 位作者

Today's multimodal assistants are typically prompted to interpret the visual evidence presented to them. To offload the cognitive burden of remembering across long horizons, wearable assistants should instead proactively acquire and maintain useful memory as the user's surroundings evolve. Doing so on the user's behalf requires identifying what matters, understanding the scene in real time, and initiating memory maintenance in the background while the user stays focused on their activities. We introduce ProactEgoMem, a benchmark that evaluates proactive memory in streaming egocentric video. Three tasks ground the evaluation in ambient environmental needs: Information Capture (IC) preserves transient yet dense visual information, State Tracking (ST) follows changing object states, and Location Tracking (LT) records object movements. The benchmark defines its protocol at two levels of proactiveness: the Notification Level asks for a single timely notification that satisfies the user's intent, while the deeper Intervention Level asks the agent to maintain memory on the user's behalf through an active start-to-stop tool lifecycle. Parallel ProactEgoMem-Daily and ProactEgoMem-Sci tracks contain 300/100 clips covering daily and scientific use cases, paired with 1000/500 questions in ProactEgoMem-QA, which measures the quality of the proactively acquired memory. Across proprietary, open-source, video-language, and streaming baselines, even the strongest models fail to capture memory both timely and accurately. ProactEgoMem provides a rigorous evaluation foundation for proactive multimodal assistance and for video agents that co-exist with their users.

Supervising the Visible State: Separating Representation from View Selection in Streaming Video

Yihao Hu, Pan Wang, Yitong Lin, Zhihao Wen, Deyuan Liu, Hang Wang, Mingda Wan, Yiwen Zhao 等 11 位作者

An action seen once and the same action seen three times receive the same action-recognition label, so that supervision does not require a model to count. Answers shared across histories that differ in event order, accumulation, or relations leave those distinctions unconstrained; we call this state under-specification. Visible-State Supervision (ViSS) addresses it by training on source-grounded probes of event identity, order, accumulation, relation change, and answer sufficiency; under the same recent-frame interface it improves OVO-Bench over a strict-matched generic temporal supervision baseline while remaining comparable on StreamingBench, with the largest gain in hallucination detection. Test-Time Causal View Search (TVS) then adapts evidence access while keeping the learned model fixed, expanding from recent frames to sparse event and compact history views on demand. The two interventions separate representation from view selection: supervision particularly benefits hallucination detection and causal reasoning, access particularly benefits event recall and forward reasoning. Together they reach the best reported accuracy among the published systems compared here on StreamingBench and OVO-Bench at a fraction of the processed frames of exhaustive selection, and strict replay shows that most of the remaining gap to a three-view oracle is a correct answer that was later replaced. Streaming accuracy depends on what supervision asks the model to keep, what evidence inference exposes, and whether the model keeps a correct answer once it has one.

ChronoReplay: One Answer Interface Is Not Enough for Streaming Spatial Intelligence

Yihao Hu, Yitong Lin, Pan Wang, Zhihao Wen, Hang Wang, Yiwen Zhao, Deyuan Liu, Yutong Li 等 11 位作者

Training a spatial VLM to answer which side an object lies on does not require it to preserve the metric displacement that determines that answer, while supervision for a distance estimate may leave categorical relations largely unconstrained. When post-training emphasizes one readout, improvements can therefore concentrate on that interface while transfer to others remains weak or even degrades; we call this observed specialization interface lock-in. ChronoReplay addresses it by replaying heterogeneous spatial supervision as chronologically ordered episodes, retaining source-native targets, and balancing supervision across families. Under the same observation access, a single ChronoReplay checkpoint improves OVO-S-Bench, OST-Bench, and UCS-Bench together, including a 13.41-point gain on OST-Bench, and achieves the highest three-benchmark mean among the supervision settings compared here. Same-data controls further separate the ingredients of this transfer: answer serialization redistributes gains across OST and UCS, family-balanced learning improves over ordinary joint SFT and natural turn weighting, and chronological replay exceeds a shifted-order control by about 2.41 OST points across two paired seeds. Adaptive frame selection then changes evidence access while keeping the trained model fixed, providing an additional inference-time gain at lower visual cost. Streaming spatial performance depends on what distinctions supervision preserves, how heterogeneous histories are organized during learning, and what causal evidence inference makes available at test time.

SceneAlign: Aligning Multimodal Reasoning to Scene Graphs in Complex Visual Scenes

Chuhan Wang University of Notre Dame, Xintong Li, Jennifer Yuntong Zhang, Junda Wu University of California, San Diego, Chengkai Huang, Lina Yao University of New South Wales, Julian McAuley University of California, San Diego, University of California, San Diego, Jingbo Shang University of California, San Diego

Multimodal large language models often struggle with faithful reasoning in complex visual scenes, where intricate entities and relations require precise visual grounding at each step. This reasoning unfaithfulness frequently manifests as hallucinated entities, mis-grounded relations, skipped steps, and over-specified reasoning. Existing preference-based approaches, typically relying on textual perturbations or answer-conditioned rationales, fail to address this challenge as they allow models to exploit language priors to bypass visual grounding. To address this, we propose SceneAlign, a framework that leverages scene graphs as structured visual information to perform controllable structural interventions. By identifying reasoning-critical nodes and perturbing them through four targeted strategies that mimic typical grounding failures, SceneAlign constructs hard negative rationales that remain linguistically plausible but are grounded in inaccurate visual facts. These contrastive pairs are used in Direct Preference Optimization to steer models toward fine-grained, structure-faithful reasoning. Across seven visual reasoning benchmarks, SceneAlign consistently improves answer accuracy and reasoning faithfulness, highlighting the effectiveness of grounding-aware alignment for multimodal reasoning.

Swin Transformer:使用移位窗口的层次化视觉Transformer

Swin Transformer: Hierarchical Vision Transformer using Shifted Windows

Ze Liu, Yutong Lin, Yue Cao, Han Hu, Yixuan Wei, Zheng Zhang, Stephen Lin, Baining Guo

AI 速览:提出一种以移位窗口计算表示的层次化视觉Transformer,可作为通用视觉骨干网络,并在分类、检测和分割任务上取得作者报告的良好结果。

This paper presents a new vision Transformer, called Swin Transformer, that capably serves as a general-purpose backbone for computer vision. Challenges in adapting Transformer from language to vision arise from differences between the two domains, such as large variations in the scale of visual entities and the high resolution of pixels in images compared to words in text. To address these differences, we propose a hierarchical Transformer whose representation is computed with \textbf{S}hifted \textbf{win}dows. The shifted windowing scheme brings greater efficiency by limiting self-attention computation to non-overlapping local windows while also allowing for cross-window connection. This hierarchical architecture has the flexibility to model at various scales and has linear computational complexity with respect to image size. These qualities of Swin Transformer make it compatible with a broad range of vision tasks, including image classification (87.3 top-1 accuracy on ImageNet-1K) and dense prediction tasks such as object detection (58.7 box AP and 51.1 mask AP on COCO test-dev) and semantic segmentation (53.5 mIoU on ADE20K val). Its performance surpasses the previous state-of-the-art by a large margin of +2.7 box AP and +2.6 mask AP on COCO, and +3.2 mIoU on ADE20K, demonstrating the potential of Transformer-based models as vision backbones. The hierarchical design and the shifted window approach also prove beneficial for all-MLP architectures. The code and models are publicly available at~\url{https://github.com/microsoft/Swin-Transformer}.
