Dream to Assist: Intent-Conditioned World Models for Shared Vehicle Control

Jonathan DeCastro, Thomas Balch, Emily Sumner, Deepak Gopinath, Laporsha Dees, Patricio Reyes Gomez, Elliot Weiss, Megan Applegate-Kenton 等 12 位作者

Assistive agents in shared-control settings face a dual challenge: acting proactively to align with the human's intentions while remaining legible enough for the human to comprehend and fluently respond in real time. We present Dream2Assist, a model-based reinforcement learning framework for tightly-coupled shared decision making that addresses both sides of this challenge. Our approach extends a recurrent state-space world model with intent inference, enabling an assistive policy trained via fictitious co-play to anticipate and support discrete human objectives without overriding human agency. Beyond the computational framework, we describe the full deployment pipeline needed to translate a world-model-based policy into a safe, human-centered system in a resource-efficient way. Crucially, we address the sim-to-real-human gap via policy down-selection and reward restructuring within an iterative human-machine interface design. We validate the framework through three human-subjects studies and a preliminary on-vehicle deployment spanning two qualitatively distinct domains: high-speed racing (N=30) and urban driving with richer intent structure (N=10). Our results demonstrate that intent conditioning yields measurable improvements in torque alignment and collision rate. We surface key design insights and practices for deploying learning-based assistive agents in safety-critical, real-time human-robot teaming.

Rewriting the Self: User Perceptions of AI-Mediated Cognitive Reframing

Yuewen Yang, Olzhas Yessenbayev, Anna R. Van Meter, Tanzeem Choudhury, Daniel A. Adler

Individuals are increasingly using AI for psychological support. One specific paradigm, AI-mediated cognitive reframing (AIM-CR), uses AI to automatically reframe users' negative thoughts ("I failed...") into more adaptive perspectives ("I am learning..."). While prior work suggests that AIM-CR tools reduce users' negative emotions, the complexities of AI automatically modifying users' personal narratives remain underexplored. In this work, we investigated these complexities through a mixed-methods study in which 28 participants engaged with an AIM-CR tool that reframed narratives about their stressors. Our findings suggest that participants had mixed perceptions of AIM-CR: although reframing reduced negative emotions for most participants, participants felt less ownership of, and less authenticity in, the reframed narratives. Participants perceived AIM-CR as a validating "mirror," as "another self" that could motivate or alienate them, or as an external social actor. These perceptions shaped therapeutic dynamics. We conclude by discussing design implications for future AIM-CR tools to better preserve user agency in narrative co-construction and more effectively support mental health and well-being.

Scriptorium: System Design and Implementation of a Multi-Human, Multi-AI Collaborative Digital Library Search Platform

Abbas Pirmoradi, Milad Momeni, Anna Chu, Orland Hoeber

This technical report documents the design and implementation of Scriptorium, a digital library search interface designed to support multi-human, multi-AI collaboration: full cross-user transparency of search activity combined with a Manager--Worker architecture of seven role-specialized generative AI agents. A companion short demonstration paper describes Scriptorium's interaction design; because a demonstration format is constrained to a few pages, it necessarily omits most implementation detail. This report documents Scriptorium's complete system architecture, data model, collaborative-interaction design rationale, and AI orchestration mechanism, including verbatim agent prompts, the deterministic guardrails that constrain them, the language model and retrieval configuration, and the steps needed to run the system, so that the design can be inspected, critiqued, reproduced, and reused by other researchers. We also discuss the system's current limitations and the user study we are planning to evaluate its central hypothesis: that combining collaborative transparency with scoped multi-agent AI assistance increases serendipitous cross-pollination between collaborators' research threads.

From AI-Free Gates to AI-First Work: How Engineering Students in India Navigate University Education and Career Preparation Without AI Guidelines

Samhitha Goutham, Ziwei Gu

Engineering graduates in India enter a technology sector that is being reshaped by generative AI, yet the route into that sector runs through examinations and campus placement screens that largely exclude AI. Institutions in India have an approved intake of nearly 2.9 million seats in engineering and technology for 2026-2027, but HCI research on how students prepare for AI-mediated work has drawn mostly on Western and East Asian settings. We interviewed 23 students and recent graduates of Indian engineering and computing programmes about how they used generative AI across coursework, examinations and placements, and how they judged their own readiness for work. Using reflexive thematic analysis, we report five themes, covering AI-first workplaces and AI-free placement screens, how participants prepared for placement, how they used AI in coursework, the role of faculty authority and enforcement, and participants' concerns about their readiness for work. Drawing on signaling theory, we discuss what grades and screen scores certify once AI can help produce them, and we offer recommendations for employers, institutions and AI tool designers.

Jarvis: A Proactive Speech Agent for Multi-Party Conversations

Seunghyun Oh, Hirotaka Hiraki, Shuyue Stella Li, Yulia Tsvetkov, Shyamnath Gollakota

Speech agents are reactive and dyadic: they speak when spoken to, and to one person at a time. We ask what it takes for a speech agent to instead take part in a conversation among several people and speak up only when it can help. We introduce Jarvis, a real-time proactive speech agent that audibly participates in multi-party human conversations. Grounded in a document shared beforehand, Jarvis follows the discussion and intervenes when the group misses or misstates a fact and does not correct itself within a few turns. We make three contributions: a problem setting based on epistemic breakdowns that makes proactive intervention measurable, realized as CHI-180-proactive, a synthetic multi-party dataset seeded with known gaps, errors, and self-corrections; a proactive backbone that harnesses a small, open-weight model with deterministic checks and grounds every claim in a source sentence; and interaction techniques for taking the floor in live speech and showing the cited evidence on screen. On CHI-180-proactive, Jarvis is correct on most events it addresses and stays silent 97% of the time when the group resolves an issue itself. A live study with 23 participants confirms these trends with real-time interventions.

Can Loan Processors and Underwriters Spot AI-Edited Statements? An Empirical Study

Simiao Ren, Xingyu Shen, Tommy Duong, Ankit Raj

AI-assisted editing can produce loan documents that preserve familiar issuer layouts while changing the applicant's identity. We investigated whether experienced underwriters and loan processors identify such forgeries in first-pass, document-only review. Three practitioners recruited through Upwork each received one applicant package drawn from 134 forged PDFs derived from 47 genuine financial documents supplied with full consent. The edits preserved amounts, dates and balances; identifier inconsistencies introduced by the pipeline were knowingly retained before distribution. Reviewers were not told that files had been altered and returned 132 file-level judgements. Checking their explanations against the originals yielded 14 edit-supported concerns (10.6%): 12 Suspicious judgements and two Insufficient information judgements. All supported concerns involved identifier disagreements within or across documents, and no reported visual cue identified an actual edit. Thus, approximately one in ten judgements contained evidence of the forgery, despite known inconsistencies remaining in the files. These observations motivate evaluating consistency checks and independent source verification alongside human review. With three reviewer-package pairs and no genuine-file controls, the findings describe this exploratory setting rather than population-wide detection accuracy.

When Can You Trust Your Synthetic Users? Diagnostics and Corrections for LLM Consumer Panels

Robson Tigre, Hugo Gobato Souto

Large language models are increasingly used to simulate consumers, yet agreement with aggregate survey outcomes can conceal errors in the subgroup estimates that guide decisions. We develop a framework for deciding when to trust, correct, or abandon a synthetic consumer panel by distinguishing population mismatch from differences in conditional responses. The framework combines diagnostics for covariate overlap, conditional calibration, and stability across models with an augmented inverse probability weighting estimator that treats LLM predictions as auxiliary information. Correction requires a complete invitation frame, response indicators for everyone invited, and human outcomes for respondents, together with assumptions of missing at random and positivity. We evaluate the framework using simulations and controlled nonresponse experiments constructed from paired human and LLM responses in ANES and Twin-2K-500. In identified simulation regimes, point bias remains small when either the response model or the outcome model is correct, but nominal 95\% confidence intervals cover only 88--94\% in some regimes. When nonresponse depends on missing human outcomes, substantial bias persists and coverage approaches zero. Controlled masking of the paired datasets reproduces this contrast between successful point correction under imposed missing at random and failure under nonignorable nonresponse. These findings show why validation must address the intended population and task, and why the scope for correcting synthetic estimates depends on the available human data and the assumptions that identify the target.

Toward Neuroadaptive Communication Interfaces: A Framework for Personalized Speech and Language Support

Carlos Bruno, Luis Ricardo Santos

Speech and language technologies have expanded access to communication, but the support they provide is often fixed. The same linguistic or visual aid may help one user and hinder another, or become less useful as task demands change. This project proposes a framework for adapting language presentation to individual abilities and ongoing interaction. It separates access to a message from the estimation of user needs and from the selection of support, including sentence segmentation, pictograms, and optional spoken output. Behavioral feedback provides the primary evidence for adaptation; electroencephalography is considered an additional, uncertainty-aware source of information rather than a direct measure of comprehension. We specify a staged evaluation comparing fixed, behavior-adaptive, and neuroadaptive interfaces. The central question is whether neural information improves comprehension and communication efficiency beyond a strong behavioral baseline.

Perceived Acceptability of Sensory Augmentation

Michel Witter, Alwin de Rooij, Michel van Dartel, Emiel Krahmer

Sensory augmentation (SA) can extend how people perceive and engage with public environments through the body, offering opportunities to support shared multimodal experiences between deaf and hearing visitors. Designing such systems requires understanding which combinations of tactile stimuli and body locations users perceive as acceptable. We examined the perceived acceptability of fictitious yet feasible SA configurations in a museum use-case. Using a modified technology acceptance model, we surveyed 307 deaf and hearing participants about tactile stimulus types and body locations. The results showed significant effects of stimulus type and body location on acceptance, but no interactions with hearing status. Participants generally preferred temperature-based stimuli, subtle movement, texture, and tickling over vibration, and distal over proximal body locations. These findings suggest that tactile SA design should be guided primarily by embodied and contextual factors rather than hearing status, informing future systems for shared multimodal experience in public cultural settings.

PersonaCUABench: Benchmarking Computer-Use Agents Serving Diverse Personas

Haoming Li, Defu Cao, Xu Hu, Yingtao Luo, Yiyang Wang, Xianghe Xu, Jiashu He, Wanting Jiang 等 26 位作者

Computer-use agents (CUAs) are commonly evaluated against fixed task specifications, but users may omit requirements, add constraints, or require approval before consequential actions. Completing the benchmark instruction does not guarantee serving the person who asked. We introduce PersonaCUABench, which holds 74 tasks across 11 domains fixed and varies only who asks. A persona agent, playing one of 44 personas in four groups, rewrites each instruction in that user's own words and answers the CUA's questions, while the CUA sees only the dialogue, never the profile or the original instruction. Across nine backbones (3,330 runs), mean task completion falls by 36% relative to the original requests. The losses have two sources: in 59.9% of cells that lose points, the agent engages with what the user asked for and still gets it wrong, and 11.2% are stops the user requested that the checker scores as failures. Even when a persona request is fully completed, the user gives the top satisfaction rating in only 62.7% of cells, against 84.1% for the original requests. CUAs should therefore be evaluated not only on task completion but also on whether they meet the requirements and constraints users express. Code: https://github.com/MatrAIx-ai/PersonaCUABench. AI 速览:基于Gemini的多智能体系统Co-Scientist通过生成、批判和进化假设,在生物医学领域辅助科学家发现新知识。

Scientific discovery is driven by scientists generating novel hypotheses for complex problems that undergo rigorous experimental validation. To augment this process, we introduce Co-Scientist, a multi-agent AI system built on Gemini for structured scientific thinking and hypothesis generation. Co-Scientist aims to help scientists discover new original knowledge. Conditioned on their research objectives and prior scientific evidence, it formulates demonstrably novel research hypotheses for experimental verification. The system's design involves agents continuously generating, critiquing and refining hypotheses accelerated by scaling test-time compute. Key contributions include: (1) a multi-agent architecture with an asynchronous task execution framework for flexible compute scaling; (2) a tournament evolution process for self-improving hypotheses generation. Automated evaluations show continued benefits of test-time compute scaling, improving hypothesis quality over time. While general purpose, we focus the validation in three biomedical applications: drug repurposing, novel target discovery, and explaining mechanisms of anti-microbial resistance. Specifically, Co-Scientist helped identify new drug repurposing candidates and synergistic combination therapies for acute myeloid leukemia, which were validated through in vitro experiments. These real-world validations demonstrate the potential of Co-Scientist to accelerate scientific discovery and usher in an era of AI empowered scientists.

Large language model (LLM)-based AI systems have shown promise for patient-facing diagnostic and management conversations in simulated settings. Translating these systems into clinical practice requires assessment in real-world workflows with rigorous safety oversight. We report a prospective, single-arm feasibility study of an LLM-based conversational AI, the Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer (AMIE), conducting clinical history taking and presentation of potential diagnoses for patients to discuss with their provider at urgent care appointments at a leading academic medical center. 100 adult patients completed an AMIE text-chat interaction up to 5 days before their appointment. We sought to assess the conversational safety and quality, patient and clinician experience, and clinical reasoning capabilities compared to primary care providers (PCPs). Human safety supervisors monitored all patient-AMIE interactions in real time and did not need to intervene to stop any consultations based on pre-defined criteria. Patients reported high satisfaction and their attitudes towards AI improved after interacting with AMIE (p < 0.001). PCPs found AMIE's output useful with a positive impact on preparedness. AMIE's differential diagnosis (DDx) included the final diagnosis, per chart review 8 weeks post-encounter, in 90% of cases, with 75% top-3 accuracy. Blinded assessment of AMIE and PCP DDx and management (Mx) plans suggested similar overall DDx and Mx plan quality, without significant differences for DDx (p = 0.6) and appropriateness and safety of Mx (p = 0.1 and 1.0, respectively). PCPs outperformed AMIE in the practicality (p = 0.003) and cost effectiveness (p = 0.004) of Mx. While further research is needed, this study demonstrates the initial feasibility, safety, and user acceptance of conversational AI in a real-world setting, representing crucial steps towards clinical translation.

AI 速览:作者报告,经过恰当提示并配备合适工具后,现代LLM能为几乎任意提示稳健生成高质量定制界面,人类偏好显著超过标准markdown输出。

AI models excel at creating content, but typically render it with static, predefined interfaces. Specifically, the output of LLMs is often a markdown "wall of text". Generative UI is a long standing promise, where the model generates not just the content, but the interface itself. Until now, Generative UI was not possible in a robust fashion. We demonstrate that when properly prompted and equipped with the right set of tools, a modern LLM can robustly produce high quality custom UIs for virtually any prompt. When ignoring generation speed, results generated by our implementation are overwhelmingly preferred by humans over the standard LLM markdown output. In fact, while the results generated by our implementation are worse than those crafted by human experts, they are at least comparable in 50% of cases. We show that this ability for robust Generative UI is emergent, with substantial improvements from previous models. We also create and release PAGEN, a novel dataset of expert-crafted results to aid in evaluating Generative UI implementations, as well as the results of our system for future comparisons. 教练而非拐杖:证据表明AI虽减少努力却能提升写作技能

Coach not crutch: Evidence that AI can improve writing skill despite reducing effort

Benjamin Lira, Todd Rogers, Daniel G. Goldstein, Lyle Ungar, Angela L. Duckworth

AI 速览:多项预注册实验表明,使用AI写作工具虽降低练习时的努力程度,却能通过“示例教学”提升无AI写作测试中的表现。

In a series of highly-powered empirical studies, we examine the intuition that by sparing effort, using AI inevitably hinders learning. First, in a nationally representative survey of young adults, the majority expressed the view that using AI makes people lazier and less capable. Next, in a random-assignment experiment, we gave participants a tutorial on best practices in professional writing, then provided one group with access to an AI writing tool and asked another to practice writing on their own. Those who practiced with AI indeed exerted less effort while practicing -- yet wrote better cover letters in no-AI writing tests. In a second experiment with more rigorous control conditions, access to AI improved writing more than either googling cover letter examples and tips or receiving personalized feedback on their practice letters from experienced human editors. A third experiment explained these learning gains by showing that AI can teach by example: participants who viewed a cover letter that had been revised by the AI tool but did no further practice improved their writing as much as those who practiced writing with the original AI tool. Collectively, these pre-registered experiments suggest that AI can exert opposing effects on effort and learning rate -- making it possible in at least some cases to work less and learn more.

Making Videos Accessible for Blind and Low Vision Users Using a Multimodal Agent Video Player

Adriana Olmos, Anoop K. Sinha, Renelito Delos Santos, Ruben Rodriguez Rodriguez, James A. Landay, Sam S. Sepah, Philip Nelson, Shaun K. Kane

Video content remains largely inaccessible to blind and low-vision (BLV) users. To address this, we introduce a prototype that leverages a multimodal agent - powered by a novel conversational architecture using a multimodal large language model (MLLM) - to provide BLV users with an interactive, accessible video experience. This Multimodal Agent Video Player (MAVP) demonstrates that an interactive accessibility mode can be added to a video through multilayered prompt orchestration. We describe a user-centered design process involving 18 sessions with BLV users that showed that BLV users do not just want accessibility features, but desire independence and personal agency over the viewing experience. We conducted a qualitative study with an additional 8 BLV participants; in this, we saw that the MAVP's conversational dialogue offers BLV users a sense of personal agency, fostering collaboration and trust. Even in the case of hallucinations, it is meta-conversational dialogues about AI's limitations that can repair trust.

AI如何影响技能形成

How AI Impacts Skill Formation

Judy Hanwen Shen, Alex Tamkin

AI 速览:随机实验发现AI辅助会损害开发者对新编程库的概念理解、代码阅读和调试能力,且平均未带来显著效率提升,但某些认知参与型交互模式可保留学习效果。

AI assistance produces significant productivity gains across professional domains, particularly for novice workers. Yet how this assistance affects the development of skills required to effectively supervise AI remains unclear. Novice workers who rely heavily on AI to complete unfamiliar tasks may compromise their own skill acquisition in the process. We conduct randomized experiments to study how developers gained mastery of a new asynchronous programming library with and without the assistance of AI. We find that AI use impairs conceptual understanding, code reading, and debugging abilities, without delivering significant efficiency gains on average. Participants who fully delegated coding tasks showed some productivity improvements, but at the cost of learning the library. We identify six distinct AI interaction patterns, three of which involve cognitive engagement and preserve learning outcomes even when participants receive AI assistance. Our findings suggest that AI-enhanced productivity is not a shortcut to competence and AI assistance should be carefully adopted into workflows to preserve skill formation -- particularly in safety-critical domains.

Complementary Human-AI Clinical Reasoning in Ophthalmology

Mertcan Sevgi, Fares Antaki, Abdullah Zafar Khan, Ariel Yuhan Ong, David Adrian Merle, Kuang Hu, Shafi Balal, Sophie-Christin Kornelia Ernst 等 29 位作者

Vision impairment and blindness are a major global health challenge where gaps in the ophthalmology workforce limit access to specialist care. We evaluate AMIE, a medically fine-tuned conversational system based on Gemini with integrated web search and self-critique reasoning, using real-world clinical vignettes that reflect scenarios a general ophthalmologist would be expected to manage. We conducted two complementary evaluations: (1) a human-AI interactive diagnostic reasoning study in which ophthalmologists recorded initial differentials and plans, then reviewed AMIE's structured output and revised their answers; and (2) a masked preference and quality study comparing AMIE's narrative outputs with case author reference answers using a predefined rubric. AMIE showed standalone diagnostic performance comparable to clinicians at baseline. Crucially, after reviewing AMIE's responses, ophthalmologists tended to rank the correct diagnosis higher, reached greater agreement with one another, and enriched their investigation and management plans. Improvements were observed even when AMIE's top choice differed from or underperformed the clinician baseline, consistent with a complementary effect in which structured reasoning support helps clinicians re-rank rather than simply accept the model output. Preferences varied by clinical grade, suggesting opportunities to personalise responses by experience. Without ophthalmology-specific fine-tuning, AMIE matched clinician baseline and augmented clinical reasoning at the point of need, motivating multi-axis evaluation, domain adaptation, and prospective multimodal studies in real-world settings.

Taxonomy of User Needs and Actions

Renee Shelby, Fernando Diaz, Vinodkumar Prabhakaran

The growing ubiquity of conversational AI highlights the need for frameworks that capture not only users' instrumental goals but also the situated, adaptive, and social practices through which they achieve them. Existing taxonomies of conversational behavior either overgeneralize, remain domain-specific, or reduce interactions to narrow dialogue functions. To address this gap, we introduce the Taxonomy of User Needs and Actions (TUNA), an empirically grounded framework developed through iterative qualitative analysis of 1193 human-AI conversations, supplemented by theoretical review and validation across diverse contexts. TUNA organizes user actions into a three-level hierarchy encompassing behaviors associated with information seeking, synthesis, procedural guidance, content creation, social interaction, and meta-conversation. By centering user agency and appropriation practices, TUNA enables multi-scale evaluation, supports policy harmonization across products, and provides a backbone for layering domain-specific taxonomies. This work contributes a systematic vocabulary for describing AI use, advancing both scholarly understanding and practical design of safer, more responsive, and more accountable conversational systems.

A-MEM: Agentic Memory for LLM Agents

Wujiang Xu, Zujie Liang, Kai Mei, Hang Gao, Juntao Tan, Yongfeng Zhang

AI 速览:提出一种借鉴Zettelkasten方法、由智能体动态组织和演化记忆的LLM智能体记忆系统。

While large language model (LLM) agents can effectively use external tools for complex real-world tasks, they require memory systems to leverage historical experiences. Current memory systems enable basic storage and retrieval but lack sophisticated memory organization, despite recent attempts to incorporate graph databases. Moreover, these systems' fixed operations and structures limit their adaptability across diverse tasks. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a novel agentic memory system for LLM agents that can dynamically organize memories in an agentic way. Following the basic principles of the Zettelkasten method, we designed our memory system to create interconnected knowledge networks through dynamic indexing and linking. When a new memory is added, we generate a comprehensive note containing multiple structured attributes, including contextual descriptions, keywords, and tags. The system then analyzes historical memories to identify relevant connections, establishing links where meaningful similarities exist. Additionally, this process enables memory evolution - as new memories are integrated, they can trigger updates to the contextual representations and attributes of existing historical memories, allowing the memory network to continuously refine its understanding. Our approach combines the structured organization principles of Zettelkasten with the flexibility of agent-driven decision making, allowing for more adaptive and context-aware memory management. Empirical experiments on six foundation models show superior improvement against existing SOTA baselines. The source code for evaluating performance is available at https://github.com/WujiangXu/A-mem, while the source code of the agentic memory system is available at https://github.com/WujiangXu/A-mem-sys.

Textbooks are a cornerstone of education, but they have a fundamental limitation: they are a one-size-fits-all medium. Any new material or alternative representation requires arduous human effort, so that textbooks cannot be adapted in a scalable manner. We present an approach for transforming and augmenting textbooks using generative AI, adding layers of multiple representations and personalization while maintaining content integrity and quality. We refer to the system built with this approach as Learn Your Way. We report pedagogical evaluations of the different transformations and augmentations, and present the results of a a randomized control trial, highlighting the advantages of learning with Learn Your Way over regular textbook usage.

Toshiaki Tsuji, Yasuhiro Kato, Gokhan Solak, Heng Zhang, Tadej Petrič, Francesco Nori, Arash Ajoudani

This paper comprehensively surveys research trends in imitation learning for contact-rich robotic tasks. Contact-rich tasks, which require complex physical interactions with the environment, represent a central challenge in robotics due to their nonlinear dynamics and sensitivity to small positional deviations. The paper examines demonstration collection methodologies, including teaching methods and sensory modalities crucial for capturing subtle interaction dynamics. We then analyze imitation learning approaches, highlighting their applications to contact-rich manipulation. Recent advances in multimodal learning and foundation models have significantly enhanced performance in complex contact tasks across industrial, household, and healthcare domains. Through systematic organization of current research and identification of challenges, this survey provides a foundation for future advancements in contact-rich robotic manipulation.

Why human-AI relationships need socioaffective alignment

Hannah Rose Kirk, Iason Gabriel, Chris Summerfield, Bertie Vidgen, Scott A. Hale

Humans strive to design safe AI systems that align with our goals and remain under our control. However, as AI capabilities advance, we face a new challenge: the emergence of deeper, more persistent relationships between humans and AI systems. We explore how increasingly capable AI agents may generate the perception of deeper relationships with users, especially as AI becomes more personalised and agentic. This shift, from transactional interaction to ongoing sustained social engagement with AI, necessitates a new focus on socioaffective alignment-how an AI system behaves within the social and psychological ecosystem co-created with its user, where preferences and perceptions evolve through mutual influence. Addressing these dynamics involves resolving key intrapersonal dilemmas, including balancing immediate versus long-term well-being, protecting autonomy, and managing AI companionship alongside the desire to preserve human social bonds. By framing these challenges through a notion of basic psychological needs, we seek AI systems that support, rather than exploit, our fundamental nature as social and emotional beings.

However, the scientific literature on this topic to date is marred by small and/or unrepresentative samples, poor measurement of core constructs (e.g., device use, smartphone addiction), and a limited ability to address the psychological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the relationships between device use and well-being. A number of recent authoritative reviews have made urgent calls for future research projects to address these limitations. The critical role of research is to identify which patterns of use are associated with benefits versus risks, and who is more vulnerable to harmful versus beneficial outcomes, so that we can pursue evidence-based product design, education, and regulation aimed at maximizing benefits and minimizing risks of smartphones and other digital devices. We describe a protocol for a Digital Well-Being (DWB) study to help answer these questions.

Recent research has demonstrated the capability of behavior signals captured by smartphones and wearables for longitudinal behavior modeling. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive public dataset that serves as an open testbed for fair comparison among algorithms. Moreover, prior studies mainly evaluate algorithms using data from a single population within a short period, without measuring the cross-dataset generalizability of these algorithms. We present the first multi-year passive sensing datasets, containing over 700 user-years and 497 unique users' data collected from mobile and wearable sensors, together with a wide range of well-being metrics. Our datasets can support multiple cross-dataset evaluations of behavior modeling algorithms' generalizability across different users and years. As a starting point, we provide the benchmark results of 18 algorithms on the task of depression detection. Our results indicate that both prior depression detection algorithms and domain generalization techniques show potential but need further research to achieve adequate cross-dataset generalizability. We envision our multi-year datasets can support the ML community in developing generalizable longitudinal behavior modeling algorithms.

AI4VIS: Survey on Artificial Intelligence Approaches for Data Visualization

Aoyu Wu, Yun Wang, Xinhuan Shu, Dominik Moritz, Weiwei Cui, Haidong Zhang, Dongmei Zhang, Huamin Qu

Visualizations themselves have become a data format. Akin to other data formats such as text and images, visualizations are increasingly created, stored, shared, and (re-)used with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. In this survey, we probe the underlying vision of formalizing visualizations as an emerging data format and review the recent advance in applying AI techniques to visualization data (AI4VIS). We define visualization data as the digital representations of visualizations in computers and focus on data visualization (e.g., charts and infographics). We build our survey upon a corpus spanning ten different fields in computer science with an eye toward identifying important common interests. Our resulting taxonomy is organized around WHAT is visualization data and its representation, WHY and HOW to apply AI to visualization data. We highlight a set of common tasks that researchers apply to the visualization data and present a detailed discussion of AI approaches developed to accomplish those tasks. Drawing upon our literature review, we discuss several important research questions surrounding the management and exploitation of visualization data, as well as the role of AI in support of those processes. We make the list of surveyed papers and related material available online at ai4vis.github.io.
