What Remains in Sight? Autoregressive Video Decoding as Representation-Guided Context Rewriting

Lixuan He, Jihyeon Je, Yang You, Leonidas Guibas

原文摘要

Long-horizon video generation is increasingly moving toward autoregressive rollout, where each newly generated segment becomes part of the evidence used for future prediction. Recent causal decoders, long-context training, and KV-cache mechanisms have extended feasible duration, but most inference pipelines still decide the visible past implicitly through recent windows, compressed caches, or external memory. This raises a direct question: \textbf{can the choice of which past frames or segments to show to the decoder be treated as an explicit test-time decision?} We answer this question with \textsc{ReCR}, a training-free method that formulates autoregressive video decoding as representation-guided context rewriting. At each step, \textsc{ReCR} builds a selected visible context from the generated history by using internal decoder representations to favor context units that match the global rollout state, avoid redundancy with the recent continuation, preserve temporal boundary coverage, and widen the range of spatial layouts in view. The selected units are then mapped onto a compact causal axis before decoding the next block. Across long-horizon text-to-video benchmarks, \textsc{ReCR} consistently improves multiple autoregressive backbones under matched visible-token budgets. Empirical analyses such as representation-space diagnostics and transition-count prompt switching further show that improving what remains visible is an effective path toward more stable long-video decoding.

On the Feature Evolution of Temporal Difference Learning

Shangzhe Li, Dechen Zhang, Difan Zou, Weitong Zhang

原文摘要

Temporal-difference (TD) learning trains neural representations using bootstrapped targets generated by evolving value estimates, yet how predictive features emerge and propagate under incomplete neural updates remains poorly understood. We investigate this problem using finite-width two-layer ReLU critics on a constructed family of smooth stochastic horizon-$H$ MDPs with unknown quadratic structure and $d$-dimensional observations. We first show that an informative TD update acquires the quadratic Bellman signal and yields a representation admitting a bounded predictive readout. The simultaneous hidden-weight and head update achieves a strict finite-sample prediction-risk improvement over matched head-only SGD, with a $2(d+1)$-fold larger population quadratic response. We then establish that an imperfect learned continuation can already provide informative supervision to an earlier zero-reward stage. By tracking coupled neural updates with one SGD step per target copy, without requiring intermediate Bellman regressions to be solved, we obtain a uniform prediction-error transient $\exp[-Ω(K/(Hd))]$, up to action-independent shifts and explicit sampling and finite-width errors. On the constructed signed-action MDP family whose total reward is bounded by 1, we show that an exploration-then-commit algorithm can achieve $\widetilde{O}(d^3H^{1/3}T^{2/3})$ regret over $T$ episodes, using $K=\widetilde{O}(Hd)$ global updates. Our analysis connects bootstrapped feature acquisition, concurrent neural refinement, and finite-budget policy performance.

HOLE: Homological Observation of Latent Embeddings for Neural Network Interpretability

Sudhanva Manjunath Athreya, Paul Rosen

原文摘要

Deep learning models have achieved remarkable success across various domains, yet their learned representations and decision-making processes remain largely opaque and hard to interpret. This work introduces HOLE (Homological Observation of Latent Embeddings), a method for analyzing and interpreting discriminative neural networks through persistent homology. HOLE extracts topological features from intermediate activations and presents them using a suite of visualization techniques, including cluster flow diagrams, blob graphs, and heatmap dendrograms. These tools facilitate the examination of representation structure and quality across layers. We evaluate HOLE using a range of discriminative models, focusing on representation quality, interpretability across layers, and robustness to input perturbations and model compression. The results indicate that topological analysis reveals patterns associated with class separation, feature disentanglement, and model robustness, providing a complementary perspective for understanding and improving deep learning systems.

Nonparametric GARCH: An Iterated Neural Estimator

Ruizhi Deng, Guohao Shen, Ngai Hang Chan

原文摘要

We study nonparametric estimation and forecasting for GARCH-type processes and propose an iterated neural estimator that alternates between estimating the recursion map and updating the unobserved conditional variances. Under mild conditions, we establish finite-sample bounds for the time-averaged in-sample variance-path error and show that the estimator is minimax rate-optimal up to logarithmic factors. Under stationarity and mixing conditions, we establish the same rate for recursion-map estimation and derive finite-sample bounds for out-of-sample variance forecasts and expected excess Gaussian quasi-likelihood (QLIKE) loss. The convergence rates depend on the true lag orders and remain unchanged when the fitted orders are overspecified. Simulation studies illustrate the effectiveness of our estimators under nonlinear and time-varying volatility dynamics. Real-data applications suggest that our neural methods perform competitively and can incorporate option-price and high-frequency information.

The Optimal Sample Complexity of Multiclass and List Learning

Chirag Pabbaraju

原文摘要

While the optimal sample complexity of binary classification in terms of the VC dimension is well-established, determining the optimal sample complexity of multiclass classification had remained open. The appropriate complexity parameter for multiclass classification is the DS dimension, and despite significant efforts, a gap of $\sqrt{\text{DS}}$ had persisted between the upper and lower bounds on sample complexity. Recent work by Hanneke et al. (2026) shows a novel algebraic characterization of multiclass hypothesis classes in terms of their DS dimension. Building up on this, we show that the maximum hypergraph density of any multiclass hypothesis class is upper-bounded by its DS dimension. This proves a longstanding conjecture of Daniely and Shalev-Shwartz (2014). As a consequence, we determine the optimal dependence of the sample complexity on the DS dimension for multiclass as well as list learning.

Optimal FALQON for Quantum Approximate Optimization via Layer-wise Parameter Tuning

Michael Mancini, Shabnam Sodagari

原文摘要

Feedback-based adaptive quantum optimization (FALQON) is a promising approach for combinatorial optimization on noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices, but prior studies report that standard fixed-parameter schedules can require relatively deep circuits to reach strong solution quality. We study Optimal FALQON, a layer-wise formulation that treats the time-step $δ_k$ and scaling parameter $w_k$ as classical decision variables optimized per layer. The benchmark uses all 94 non-isomorphic 3-regular graphs with 12 vertices under 8192-shot simulation and compares standard FALQON, Optimal FALQON, and QAOA/QAOA-MA Powell runs warm-started from FALQON-derived schedules. Across approximation ratio, success probability, evaluation-normalized efficiency, and layer-normalized efficiency, Optimal FALQON substantially improves on standard FALQON, and Optimal-FALQON warm starts substantially improve on standard-FALQON warm starts.

Improving PI-RADS Prediction and Prostate Cancer Detection from Multiparametric MRI with Anatomical Guidance

Seungbin Park, Thibault Heintz, Rachit Saluja, Francesca Khani, Timothy McClure, Daniel Margolis, Mert R. Sabuncu, Heejong Kim

原文摘要

Accurate prediction of Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) scores from multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) remains challenging, more so than clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) detection. Given the importance of lesion location in PI-RADS scoring, we evaluated whether incorporating prostate zonal masks improves PI-RADS prediction and csPCa detection across multiple architectures (3D ResNet-18, ResNet-50, and ViT) using a large-scale internal dataset. Anatomical guidance generally improved performance across architectures, with the best results achieved by ResNet-18 with 2-zone guidance for PI-RADS prediction (QWK = 0.511) and ResNet-50 with 5-zone guidance for csPCa detection (AUC = 0.809). Fine-tuned results on external datasets further demonstrated the benefits of anatomical guidance. Furthermore, models with anatomical guidance improved the utility of model-predicted PI-RADS scores for PI-RADS-based csPCa detection (positive defined as PI-RADS>=3). Combining model-predicted and expert-assigned PI-RADS scores significantly increased the AUC from 0.711 to 0.756 (p < 0.05), suggesting that AI-derived PI-RADS scores may provide complementary information to expert assessment for csPCa detection. Overall, our findings highlight the value of incorporating prostate zonal anatomy into deep learning-based prostate MRI assessment.

Palimpsestic Accountability in the US Federal AI Inventories

Dipto Das, Syed Ishtiaque Ahmed, Aditya Vashistha, Shion Guha

原文摘要

An AI inventory is a structured, often public record in which a government or organization lists and describes the AI systems it uses or plans to use. Studies of single AI inventory releases describe what systems do but say little about how they are governed over time. We linked entries across three releases of the US Federal AI Use Case Inventory (2023--2025), compared answers only where both releases required them, and analyzed governance accounts through a dual deductive-inductive approach, guided by the Algorithmic Decision-Making Adapted for the Public Sector (ADMAPS) framework. As the inventory grew from 710 to 3,611 entries from 2023 to 2025, fewer required answers were left blank, but accountability was rewritten through three mechanisms. Each release \emph{redrew} the scope of the questions; agency-assigned classifications \emph{gated} what was reported; and answers were also \emph{overwritten}, with gains and losses concentrated in single agencies and little account of human oversight and judgment. These findings show that each release redraws the boundary of accountability and leaves the public to \emph{re-stitch} the records, a condition we term \textbf{palimpsestic accountability}. We recommend versioned records, reasons for every reclassification, public files that distinguish kinds of missing answers, and oversight documented as conditions to improve public sector AI accountability.

PACT: Certifying What Is Written in Parallel Decoding of Diffusion Language Models

Yanchao Li, Yusu Zhang, Jiaqing Xie, Yi Ban, Ben Gao, Zhongyu Huang, Tianfan Fu, Yuqiang Li

原文摘要

Parallel decoding speeds up masked diffusion language models by writing several tokens per forward pass. Published commit rules choose these tokens by testing the predicted distributions. Under sampling the written tokens are drawn, and these tests do not see them. We find that answer quality follows the reliability of the tokens actually written. An answer's log probability splits into this reliability and the dependence within each step. We propose PACT, a training-free commit rule that draws the tokens first, certifies the set it will write and spaces the positions of each step apart. This certificate holds at every temperature, and we show that no rule with the same guarantee commits more positions. Experiments use four models of the LLaDA and Dream families and HumanEval, MBPP, GSM8K, MATH500 and IFEval benchmarks. PACT reaches the quality of published commit rules with fewer forward passes. Spacing removes positions from each step, yet it usually lowers the total cost because later steps then write more tokens. At the same speed, published decoders also write a word twice in a row far more often than PACT. These results suggest that commit rules should certify the tokens they write. Code is available at https://github.com/LiZaiyuan0619/PACT.

On the Role of Geometry in Solving Variational Inequalities

Ioannis Anagnostides, Ioannis Panageas, Jingming Yan

原文摘要

The geometry of constraints in variational inequalities (VIs) plays a central role in applications ranging from resource allocation and equilibrium computation to constrained optimization. Yet, its effect on computational complexity has received surprisingly little attention beyond special cases. We examine this question when the constraint set is an $\ell_p$ ball. This family of problems encompasses two of the most extensively studied classes of problems in algorithmic game theory: symmetric bimatrix games for $p = 1$ and multi-player polymatrix games for $p = \infty$. Both of these problems are known to be PPAD-complete even for affine operators. We establish a comprehensive complexity landscape for VIs over $\ell_p$ balls across the full range $p\in[1,\infty]$. First, for any $p\neq 2$, we show that finding an inverse-polynomial approximate VI solution is PPAD-complete even for affine operators. In contrast, for $p=2$, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for affine VIs, extending a classic result of Ye (1992) beyond symmetric operators. On the other hand, once the operator becomes quadratic, we establish PPAD-completeness even at inverse polynomial precision. From a technical standpoint, we develop a new toolkit for exploiting the geometry of the constraint set and the structure of the operator to characterize the complexity of equilibrium and optimization problems, which is of independent interest.

ES-Merging: Biological MLLM Merging via Embedding Space Signals

Wonbin Lee, Dongki Kim, Sung Ju Hwang

原文摘要

Biological multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have emerged as powerful foundation models for scientific discovery. However, existing models are specialized to a single modality, limiting their ability to solve inherently cross-modal scientific problems. While model merging is an efficient method to combine the different modalities into a unified MLLM, existing methods rely on input-agnostic parameter space heuristics that fail to faithfully capture modality specialization. To overcome this limitation, we propose the Embedding-Signal-based MLLM Merging (ES-Merging), a framework that estimates merging coefficients from embedding space signals, moving the merging paradigm from the parameter signals to the embedding signals. ES-Merging exploits coarse-grained and fine-grained signals from embedding space to estimate the layer-wise and element-wise merging coefficients, respectively, which are jointly combined for complementary coefficient estimation. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that ES-Merging outperforms existing merging methods not only on the cross-modal reasoning but also on the single-modal knowledge preservation, establishing that embedding space signals provide a principled and effective foundation for MLLM merging.

SEAL: Synergistic Co-Evolution of Agents and Learning Environments

Yihao Hu, Zhihao Wen, Pan Wang, Xiujin Liu, Yitong Lin, Xin Zhang, Wei Wu

原文摘要

Large language model (LLM) agents increasingly learn through interaction, yet their training process often evolves unevenly: the policy changes with experience while the learning environment continues to provide largely fixed forms of support. As training progresses, this creates a growing mismatch between what the agent currently struggles with and what its learning process emphasizes. We call this phenomenon Agent-Learning Environment Misalignment (ALEM). We introduce SEAL, a framework for synergistic co-evolution of agents and learning environments. SEAL turns verifier-grounded execution failures into a shared diagnostic signal that coordinates two complementary forms of adaptation: it reshapes the support available in subsequent interactions and adjusts how the policy learns from collected trajectories. In this way, the learning environment follows the agent's evolving failure profile while both sides remain grounded in the same executable feedback. Across three backbones on BFCL V3, SEAL consistently improves over matched Vanilla RL, reaching 40.25% versus 30.75% with Qwen2.5-7B. A matched factorial ablation further yields a +5.00-point interaction estimate for the coupled configuration. The same trained checkpoints also show positive transfer to the evaluated BFCL V4 and $τ^2$-bench domains. These results suggest that coordinating how an agent learns with the environment it learns from is a promising direction for self-evolving tool-use agents.

AdSteer: Native Advertising in Large Language Model Generation

Shuhang Lin, Chuhao Zhou, Zhenyu Wang, Xiao Lin, Changsheng Wang, Saibo Geng, Dimitris N. Metaxas

原文摘要

Large language model (LLM) services face rapidly rising serving costs. To sustain free or affordable access for a broad user base, alternative monetization mechanisms are needed. Native advertising offers a promising approach, as it creates economic value by aligning user intent with merchant offerings. Yet how to integrate sponsored content naturally into LLM responses remains largely underexplored. Existing approaches primarily rely on prompt-level injection, multi-pass rewriting, or fine-tuning, which can compromise response quality or introduce additional computational costs. We propose AdSteer, a lightweight decoding-time advertising framework that adaptively adjusts token probabilities to integrate contextually appropriate advertisement into responses. AdSteer calibrates the strength and duration of advertising influence, making sponsored content a natural part of the response. Experiments on GEM-Bench across three application scenarios show that AdSteer achieves an average improvement of 14.1% in overall score over the strongest baselines and 22.5% fewer total tokens on average than rewrite-based methods. These results demonstrate that AdSteer provides an effective and practical solution for native advertising in LLMs.

RGDM: Robust Graph Diffusion Model

Yancheng Wang, Ping Li, Dongfang Sun, Yingzhen Yang

原文摘要

Diffusion models represent a powerful class of generative models known for their solid theoretical foundations and remarkable performance across diverse tasks and domains. Existing node level diffusion methods synthesize nodes and edges within a graph, but are not designed to learn a robust generator from adversarially corrupted graphs. In this study, we introduce the Robust Graph Diffusion Model (RGDM), designed to generate labeled synthetic graph structures consisting of nodes and edges that integrate seamlessly into a given graph. The RGDM consists of a Robust Graph Autoencoder (RGAE) and a Latent Diffusion Model (LDM). Leveraging an edge selection mechanism and an innovative low-rank regularization on the latent feature, the RGDM produces clean and high-quality synthetic graph structures, even when trained on graphs subject to adversarial attacks. Comprehensive experimental evaluations reveal that Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) trained on the augmented graph, which is formed by merging the original attacked graph with the synthetic graph structures, exhibit significantly improved robustness against various graph adversarial attacks in the context of semi-supervised node classification. The code of the RGDM is available at https://github.com/Statistical-Deep-Learning/RGDM.

HyPAIC: Personal AI Computer with High Bandwidth Flash for High Performance Trillion-Parameter LLM Inference

Minho Ha, Myunghyun Rhee, Euiseok Kim, Hoshik Kim

原文摘要

LLMs have rapidly expanded from simple chatbots to agentic AI, where models directly use tools to solve complex problems. To improve problem solving, most frontier LLMs adopt an MoE architecture, pushing model sizes into the trillion-parameter regime. While cloud services have dominated large-scale LLM inference, cost and security concerns drive demand for on-premises deployment. Thus, GPU manufacturers have introduced personal AI computers (PAICs). However, existing PAICs with LPDDR-based unified main memory suffer from severe capacity limitations, restricting hostable LLM size on a single device. If most memory holds model weights, little remains for the KV cache, reducing supported context length. In this paper, we propose HyPAIC, a PAIC architecture incorporating HBF to overcome these memory constraints. HyPAIC stores read-only model weights in HBF and mutable runtime data in LPDDR. HBF offers over 10x the capacity of HBM with comparable TB/s-scale bandwidth. HyPAIC addresses HBF's access latency, limited write endurance, and page-level access granularity through prefetching, read-only weight placement, and coarse-grained weight accesses, respectively; power and cooling remain significant implementation challenges. Through simulation-based evaluation, we show that a single HyPAIC improves end-to-end system throughput by up to 1.04x and TDP-normalized throughput by up to 3.59x during 1T-parameter MoE inference versus the aggregate of eight baseline systems without HBF, one HyPAIC thus approaches the raw performance of eight baselines with far superior power efficiency. For small model inference, HyPAIC increases the maximum number of concurrent tasks sustaining at least 50 decode TPS per task by up to 4x, enhancing user experience and productivity. Although HBF specifications are still evolving, this study demonstrates strong architectural synergy between HBF and PAICs.

Interpretable Early Termination of Web Navigation Agents via Closed Sequential Pattern Mining

Sergio Talavera, Magdalini Eirinaki

原文摘要

Web navigation agents built on open-weight language models fail often and fail late, with most of the tokens spent after the trajectory has become unrecoverable. Recent work has shown that early termination is a viable cost-reduction strategy, but existing approaches produce opaque termination decisions that do not support diagnosis or human oversight. In this work we apply closed sequential pattern mining (BIDE+) to K-step prefixes of agent execution traces to produce a small, human-reviewable failure-signature library that organizes into a four-category failure taxonomy with associated repair recommendations. We use a multi-variant evaluation protocol that explicitly removes contamination artifacts (zero-step crashes and trivially separable single-step successes) so that reported detection accuracy reflects behavioral discrimination rather than trace-length distributions. We evaluate our methodology on 1,544 MiniWoB++ traces collected from three open-weight language models, achieving the best F1 at K=3 on the Exclude-errors configuration across eight methods (0.717), recovering 88% of test-set failures within three steps, and supporting an early-termination policy that saves 26.3% of tokens at 92% precision.

SPIRE: Shared-Private Representation Learning for Continuous Multi-Region LFP under Perturbation

Rahil Soroushmojdehi, Sina Javadzadeh, Mehrnaz Asadi, Terence D. Sanger

原文摘要

Learning shared and region-specific representations from continuous multi-region local field potentials (LFPs) is challenging because neural signals are nonlinear, autocorrelated, spectrally structured, and temporally misaligned. We introduce SPIRE (Shared-Private Inter-Regional Encoder), a nonlinear, time-resolved framework that separates multi-region LFP into shared and region-specific latent trajectories using region-specific sequence encoders, constrained temporal alignment, shared-only reconstruction, and variance regularization. On synthetic benchmarks with known ground-truth factors, SPIRE preferentially recovers shared and private information despite nonlinear mixing, time-varying delays, and spectral confounding. On held-out human GPi-STN LFP, shared representations strongly predict activity across regions, while cross-region prediction from private representations remains near a structured temporal null, supporting functional rather than strict statistical separation. We then apply representations trained on off-stimulation recordings to deep brain stimulation (DBS) data. Stimulation induces larger changes and more strongly encodes stimulation condition in shared than private representations. A matched CTAE analysis reproduces the shared-over-private effect, while retaining substantially less stimulation information. These findings suggest that DBS-related changes are preferentially expressed in neural representations shared across recorded regions.

Where Do Distilled Students Store Thinking?

Taeyeong Kim, Jaemin Jung, Ahhyun Kim, Unggi Lee

原文摘要

Small students degrade on large reasoning models' (LRMs') long solutions, so recent work shortens them by interpolating an LRM with a short-answer model at ratio $λ$. We ask what student weights retain when this teacher stops thinking, comparing LoRA adapters of three students from three teacher pairs at each $λ$. In each pair, the adapters' update subspace shifts most where the teacher stops thinking and solutions shorten most, locating the change without attributing it. We identify a shared adapter subspace tied to thinking-like behavior (reflective markers, monologue format and long solutions). Shared by adapters before that point, it keeps about half (post hoc) while one pair's teacher halves its solutions but keeps its think tag, and largely empties after thinking stops. Removing it largely turns this behavior off for every pair, student and benchmark. Only in that pair and one other student does it leave clearly fewer markers than removing the update's top components; elsewhere, same-energy random directions often nearly match it. Grafted into a short-answer student at twice its weight, it turns early markers (a post hoc count) on, like the whole update, but the student rarely finishes. Our work identifies a weight subspace tied to distilled thinking-like behavior.

IDs That Mean Something: A Hands-On Tutorial on Semantic IDs for Recommender Systems

Roger Zhe Li, Aghiles Salah, Mete Sertkan, Changhong Jin, Yingjie Niu, Ruihai Dong, Barry Smyth

原文摘要

Traditional recommender systems rely on arbitrary integer IDs to identify items, which carry no semantic information and force models to learn representations from interaction data. While leveraging content information can partially mitigate cold-start, this paradigm inherently suffers from exploding embedding tables and scenario-specific architectures. Recent years have seen the emergence of semantic IDs, which encode semantic information directly into the item identity, reflecting content, hierarchy, and relationships. This framework addresses the above limitations by offering a principled way to encode large-scale semantic information into item identity, benefiting both generative and discriminative applications and unlocking more native unification across modalities, domains, and tasks. This tutorial traces the evolution from raw IDs to semantic IDs as a scalable means of information utilization, offering a comprehensive review of their development and applications across multi-modality, cold-start, and cross-domain recommendation. Hands-on exercises guide attendees through building and evaluating semantic IDs, training models, and exploring cross-domain transfer. We conclude by discussing open challenges, including dynamic semantic IDs and multi-stakeholder utility. COSMIO: A Benchmark for Cross-Survey Modality Imputation

Dichang Zhang, Yixuan Shao, Jiaqi Deng, Jiali Cui, Haotian Yin, Yuanpeng Liu, Xiang Gao, Zhiqiang Lao 等 11 位作者

原文摘要

Large-scale astronomical surveys define a heterogeneous, partially observed multi-survey learning setting: each object is observed by only a subset of surveys, while survey observations differ in resolutions, wavelength coverage, noise characteristics, and footprints. This setting gives rise to a natural machine learning problem: given observations of an object in some surveys, how to infer its appearance in other surveys. We formalize this as the problem of cross-survey modality imputation and introduce COSMIO, a multi-survey benchmark of aligned observations obtained by forward-rendered shared astrophysical scenes across LSST, Euclid, and Roman under survey-specific instrument characteristics. The benchmark enables systematic evaluation of imputation across source-target survey combinations and missing-survey patterns. We evaluate a broad range of machine learning methods for imputation, which reveal a clear domain gap: methods developed for existing imputation settings transfer poorly to the survey setting. We identify rare-event imputation as a central challenge. This regime arises in the early stages of new surveys, when rare but scientifically valuable phenomena may be available only from prior surveys. We use strong gravitational lensing, where light from a background galaxy is gravitationally deflected by a foreground galaxy, as a representative rare-event setting. We evaluate model performance on zero-shot imputation of gravitational lenses and on downstream scientific tasks using the imputed lens observations. On our constructed evaluation set of galaxy-galaxy strong lenses, performance degrades under rare-event distribution shift, and this degradation further propagates to the downstream lens-detection task. Optimal Value Inference for Reinforcement Learning

原文摘要

We study offline inference for the optimal value in reinforcement learning under finite state and action spaces. Two new nuisances are derived as fixed points of a self-induced Bellman equation, in which we approximate the maximum Bellman operator by its softmax correspondence. We propose a debiased estimator through the Neyman orthogonality and establish its asymptotic normality under diverging horizons even when the behavior policy changes with time, as long as the nuisances have the statistical rates that can be achieved by many machine learning methods. We provide a concrete estimating procedure for these nuisances and show they can lead to valid inference. Synthetic experiments validate the numerical performance of our inference method, and we implement it in real-life decision-making problems, including bike repositioning and AI agentic tool use.

原文摘要

Synchrotron detectors generate data at rates that challenge storage and I/O systems. Compression can reduce data movement, but codec-only measurements do not capture the end-to-end behavior of HDF5 workflows. We present PhotonZip, a lifecycle-aware compression framework that tests candidate modes through a common HDF5 path and selects among eligible measured configurations according to either compression ratio or round-trip throughput. Its modular filters preserve standard HDF5 access when the required plugin is available. Across four beamline-derived datasets, PhotonZip reaches lossless compression ratios up to 1.629$\times$ and HDF5 write throughput up to 3.40GB/s write and 7.75GB/s read. The throughput-oriented configuration achieves 1.529$\times$ lossless data reduction while improving HDF5 write and read throughput by 21.2\% and 15.0\%, respectively. Lossy preview modes provide up to 16$\times$ data reduction and reduce preview latency by up to 8.35~s in the evaluated file-per-rank HDF5 configuration.

RTSGameBench: Evaluating VLMs for Strategic Reasoning in Game Environments

原文摘要

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) often struggle with strategic reasoning in a multi-agent setting, i.e., deciding under uncertainty while coordinating with and adapting to other agents. Real-time strategy (RTS) games can be a natural testbed for this capability, requiring long-horizon planning, coordination with allies, and adaptation to opponents under partial observability. But existing RTS benchmarks cover limited agent configurations, lack controlled evaluation across distinct strategic demands, and remain confined to fixed scenarios. To address these gaps, we propose RTSGAMEBENCH, built on Beyond All Reason, an RTS game whose larger scale broadens the strategic space beyond prior testbeds. In RTSGAMEBENCH, we offer holistic evaluation across diverse full-game matchups, diagnostic mini-games each emphasizing a focal strategic demand, and extensible coverage via a self-evolving framework that turns free-form queries into new mini-games, improving with accumulated experience. We further propose RTSGAMEAGENT, an agent harness that combines scalable group-level trajectory planning with short- and long-term memory and outperforms existing agents. We find that state-of-the-art VLMs struggle where humans succeed, particularly when they must coordinate with allies or contend with multiple opponents.

For models such as Ouro that keep a separate key-value (KV) cache per loop, cache memory limits the batch size that amortizes repeated weight reads. Uniform-bit quantization and fixed rules per loop do not allocate precision according to each layer's sensitivity in each loop. Measurements on Ouro show that quantization sensitivity varies across (loop, layer) cells, and the sum of individual cell damages approximates the overall output damage. Sharing damage also varies by cell, with later loops generally tolerating sharing better. Skipping low-attention values to save reads produces errors that compound across loops. LoopKV uses a one-time offline profile to choose 4-bit storage, 2-bit storage or reuse of the final loop's KV for each cell. The planner minimizes reads under budgets for predicted damage and storage. During decoding, each loop reads the high 2 bits of each 4-bit value and fetches the low bits only where its own attention weights require 4-bit precision. A single fused kernel in vLLM executes the plan. Serving Ouro-1.4B on one RTX PRO 6000, the memory-optimized LoopKV-M plan stores 35% less KV than uniform 4-bit quantization (KIVI-4) on the same fused kernel and CUDA graph. It sustains 1.7-2.2x KIVI-4's goodput under a latency service-level objective with a 16K-token maximum length. None of its averages on six public benchmarks falls significantly below BF16's.

Cost-aware Stopping for Bayesian Optimization

Qian Xie, Linda Cai, Alexander Terenin, Peter I. Frazier, Ziv Scully

原文摘要

In automated machine learning, scientific discovery, and other applications of Bayesian optimization, deciding when to stop evaluating expensive black-box functions in a cost-aware manner is an important but underexplored practical consideration. A natural performance metric for this purpose is the cost-adjusted simple regret, which explicitly captures the trade-off between solution quality and cumulative evaluation cost. Existing stopping rules for Bayesian optimization are either heuristic, or are theoretically grounded but designed to optimize simple regret without accounting for evaluation costs; as a result, they provide no guarantees against unnecessary evaluations when costs are high. We propose a principled cost-aware stopping rule for Bayesian optimization that adapts to varying evaluation costs without heuristic tuning. Our rule is grounded in a theoretical connection to state-of-the-art cost-aware acquisition functions, namely the Pandora's Box Gittins Index (PBGI) and log expected improvement per cost (LogEIPC). When paired with either acquisition function, we prove that the resulting policy satisfies a theoretical guarantee bounding the expected cost-adjusted simple regret. Across synthetic tasks and empirical benchmarks including hyperparameter optimization and neural architecture size search, pairing our stopping rule with PBGI or LogEIPC usually matches or outperforms other acquisition-function--stopping-rule pairs in terms of cost-adjusted simple regret.

Free Draft-and-Verification: Toward Lossless Parallel Decoding for Diffusion Large Language Models

Shutong Wu, Jiawei Zhang

原文摘要

Diffusion Large Language Models (dLLMs) have emerged as a compelling paradigm for language modeling, offering the unique potential for highly efficient inference via multi-token parallel decoding. However, unlocking this potential remains challenging. High-quality generation typically defaults to one-token-per-step static decoding, while existing parallel algorithms rely on heuristic confidence thresholds, introducing a fragile trade-off between decoding efficiency and generation quality. To overcome this, we introduce Free Draft-and-Verification (FreeDave), a novel training-free and model-free fast decoding algorithm. FreeDave capitalizes on the inherent properties of dLLMs by treating future token predictions as ``free drafts'' and rigorously self-verifying them in subsequent forward passes. Theoretically, FreeDave searches for a shorter decoding path that is guaranteed to reproduce the exact sequence generated by static decoding, achieving algorithmically lossless acceleration. With a sufficiently large draft budget and a verification frontier that does not retreat, it can use the fewest possible model forward passes among feasible paths. Extensive evaluations on math reasoning and code generation benchmarks demonstrate that FreeDave can boost the number of generated tokens per model forward (TPF) by up to 5.48$\times$ and tokens per second (TPS) by up to 3.94$\times$, while robustly maintaining generation quality and avoiding the task-specific performance degradation faced by heuristic methods. Code is available at https://github.com/cychomatica/FreeDave.

First-Token Broadcasters: Mechanistic Origins of Language Identity and Distributed Robustness in Transformers

Arjun Pillai, Christian Hoang, Anjelo Jann Laroza

原文摘要

How is language identity represented and causally maintained in transformers, and to what extent do the mechanisms identified in one language set transfer to other languages and training regimes? We introduce Language Identity Head Ablation (LIHA), a causal intervention that zeros each attention head individually and measures the resulting language switch rate. Across our multilingual evaluation sets, LIHA identifies heads whose ablation has disproportionate effects on output language. In GPT-2, a small set of first-token broadcaster heads---led by L6H1 (switch rate 0.32, 3.23$σ$ above the population mean)---attend persistently to the first prompt token across query positions. The combination of persistent first-token attention and causal sensitivity suggests that these heads participate in maintaining output language. Following ablation, first-token attention increases in heads above the ablated layer for the ablations tested (permutation test against random five-head sets, $p < 10^{-5}$). We do not test whether these heads functionally compensate for the ablated head. We also compare Qwen2.5-1.5B-Base and Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct, which are matched in architecture and parameter count but differ in training history. The base model is nearly flat (max SR$=$0.016, 200/336 heads at SR$=$0.0), whereas the instruct model concentrates causal influence at layer~0, led by L0H5 (SR$=$0.224, 8.93$σ$ above the mean). Finally, GPT-2 heads identified from the European-language experiments show no observed switch effects on the tested Chinese and Russian prompts, while other early-layer heads do show effects. Because script, typology, and tokenization vary together in this comparison, these results do not isolate a specifically script-driven mechanism. Do Synthetic Personas Predict Real Audience Response? A Headline-Ranking Study with a Generic-Reader Baseline

Alexandre Cristovão Maiorano

原文摘要

Do demographic personas improve an LLM's prediction of audience engagement? We compare a fixed ten-persona panel with a generic-reader baseline on Upworthy headlines, with supplementary news and Reddit comparisons. The primary experiment collects Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite and GPT-4.1 observations on the same 190-package exploratory cohort, selected with simultaneous winner screening. It allocates thirty scores per arm and variant within model, retains exact raw responses, and reports metric-specific valid and paired counts. Complete-package coverage is 188 for Gemini and 188 for GPT-4.1. The baseline-minus-panel Kendall $τ_b$ gap is +0.222 (CI [+0.061, +0.385]) for Gemini and +0.257 (CI [+0.119, +0.391]) for GPT-4.1, on respectively 136 and 188 valid rank pairs. Expected top-1 is 39.1% versus 54.8% for Gemini and 42.0% versus 61.7% for GPT-4.1 (panel versus baseline). These intervals condition on the selected cohort and recorded generations and do not adjust for dependence between related experiments. The Upworthy archive documents a randomization-risk period. Excluding that period in a post-hoc sensitivity retains positive expected top-1 and lift gaps in both configurations, while Gemini tau-b and Spearman intervals include zero. Supplementary Reddit top-1 and captured lift favor the panel; these aggregate comparisons use unreconciled collection protocols and do not isolate dataset effects. A raw-replay artifact supports offline reproduction of the primary experiment. The results concern this panel, cohort, and protocol; they are not a held-out evaluation or evidence of universal persona harm. Provider request protocols differ across models, and no causal mechanism is isolated.

Entanglement Allocation for Quantum Integrated Sensing and Communication

Shiva Kazemi Taskooh, Mehdi Monemi, Ekram Hossain, Georges Kaddoum, Mehdi Rasti

原文摘要

Jointly supporting communication and distributed sensing over a shared, limited pool of entanglement resources is an attractive prospect for future quantum networks. We develop a network-level quantum integrated sensing and communication (Q-ISAC) framework in which a quantum base station dynamically allocates elementary Bell pairs between communication users and distributed sensing. Sensing resources are adaptively partitioned among multiple GHZ probes with dynamically selected sizes and sensing-node assignments. We derive an effective quantum Fisher information model accounting for probabilistic fusion, transmission loss, and memory decoherence, and formulate a finite-horizon allocation problem subject to communication QoS, expected sensing-information, sensing-reliability, and hardware constraints. A hierarchical constrained proximal policy optimization (HC-PPO) framework combines learned discrete sensing allocation with analytical continuous communication allocation. Numerical results show that GHZ probing requires approximately $27$--30% fewer sensing qubits than separable probing under modest probe-size caps and 65-67% fewer at the highest considered target under the same sensing requirements. Adaptive multi-GHZ partitioning provides greater robustness than single-GHZ sensing, while adaptive communication--sensing sharing outperforms the evaluated fixed splits. The proposed HC-PPO framework satisfies the joint requirements in at least 99.9% of test instances across the considered sensing targets and fusion probabilities. Monte Carlo evaluation separately shows that realized terminal information reached its target in 96-98% of realizations, distinguishing expected-information satisfaction from realized sensing performance.

GlucoAgent: Personalized Glucose Forecasting from Multimodal Personal Context

Xingzhi Sun, Hyo Jin Kim, Zhiyuan Wang, Hao Chen

原文摘要

Continuous glucose monitors, smartwatches, meal logs, and health profiles form a rich multimodal personal context that can significantly enhance glucose forecasting. However, existing methods struggle to effectively utilize these signals to improve glucose prediction because the relevance of different modalities varies drastically across individuals and time. We present GlucoAgent, an LLM-based agentic system that addresses this challenge through dynamic, case-by-case analysis at inference time. For each forecast, GlucoAgent writes and runs code over an individual's multimodal context and returns predictions with a reason and supporting evidence. The generated programs are highly diverse, ranging from retrieving similar past meals to fitting and back-testing physiological and statistical models. On CGMacros, a multimodal glucose dataset, GlucoAgent outperforms time series foundation models on every forecasting horizon, achieving an average RMSE of 22.5 mg/dL compared to 23.5 mg/dL of Chronos-2, the leading multimodal time series foundation model. Furthermore, GlucoAgent is highly effective at leveraging multimodal data. The addition of multimodal data reduces its average RMSE by 1.4 mg/dL (24.0 mg/dL to 22.5 mg/dL), compared to a marginal 0.3 mg/dL (23.8 mg/dL to 23.5 mg/dL) improvement for Chronos-2. This advantage is most pronounced in challenging post-meal windows, where GlucoAgent uses multimodal context to reduce 60-minute forecast RMSE by 4.6 mg/dL (31.0 mg/dL to 26.5 mg/dL), far exceeding the 0.8 mg/dL (31.9 mg/dL to 31.1 mg/dL) reduction achieved by Chronos-2.
