FTerViT: Fully Ternary Vision Transformer

Szymon Ruciński, Pietro Bonazzi, Engin Türetken, Simon Narduzzi, Michele Magno, Nadim Maamari

原文摘要

Ternary Vision Transformers offer substantial model compression, however state-of-the-art methods only ternarize the encoder layers, leaving patch embeddings, LayerNorm parameters, and classifier heads in full precision. In compact models targeting resource-constrained processors, such as microcontrollers, these remaining full-precision components determine the total memory footprint, severely limiting deployment efficiency and on-device feasibility. In this work, we introduce a fully ternarized Vision Transformer in which all weight matrices and normalization parameters are ternarized, while activations remain 8-bit (FTerViT). To this end, we introduce two novel operators: TernaryBitConv2d with per-channel scaling for patch embedding and TernaryLayerNorm. FTerViT is trained using knowledge distillation, followed by a lightweight quantization-aware recovery phase. On a matched DeiT-S backbone, FTerViT reaches 77.47% ImageNet-1K top-1 at 5.81 MB, +3.27 pp over TerViT. With the stronger DeiT-III-S backbone at 384x384 resolution, our ternary W2A8 model achieves 82.43% at 6.09 MB (~15x compression, -2.42 pp vs. FP32). This backbone- and resolution-advantaged result exceeds prior ternary ViTs by up to 8 pp. Finally, we demonstrate the first implementation of ternary vision transformers on a dual-core Xtensa LX7 microcontroller inside the ESP32-S3 system-on-chip. By deploying FTerViT-Small (based on DeiT-III-Small at 224x224 resolution, 5.81 MB), we achieve 79.64% ImageNet-1K top-1 accuracy.

PointPilot: Unified Robotic Manipulation via Object-Centric 3D Point Flow Prediction

Yihan Fang, Yuxin Tian, Ruixiang Wang, Zhanqi Zhang, Xing Hu, Zhen Yang, Huayi Zhou, Yongyi Su 等 10 位作者

原文摘要

Generalization remains a central challenge in robotics, calling for policies that address domain variations from multiple dimensions such as diverse embodiments, camera poses, and/or scene layouts. In order to approach this problem, we introduce PointPilot, a task-focused and 3D aligned manipulation framework built on a 3D space point-flow prediction. Rather than modeling the global scene, PointPilot only represents task-focused objects (robot grippers treated as objects), avoiding the prediction of potentially redundant scene parts unrelated to the manipulation tasks. Moreover, PointPilot aligns 3D spatial representation in one unified coordinate and supports closed-loop and fully automatic action execution across different manipulation modes from object point flow without a separately trained action expert, while existing works typically need an extra action head or are (semi-)automatic and single-arm mode specific. Given sensor observations and language instructions, our model jointly learns subtask planning, task-relevant object grounding, and 3D point flow prediction in an end-to-end way. By processing heterogeneous data in a shared 3D point flow space, PointPilot is able to absorb demonstrations from different embodiments. Extensive simulative and real world experiments validate our method. Notably, we demonstrate zero-shot embodiment generalization with PointPilot. A single trained policy can be deployed on previously unseen embodiments and successfully complete manipulation tasks without any additional fine-tuning.

Comprehensive Evaluation of Monocular and Multi-view 3D Human Pose Estimation Models for Fitness Exercise Analysis

Néstor Ortega, Agustín Salgado, Javier Sánchez

原文摘要

Three-dimensional human pose estimation has become a fundamental component of computer vision systems for sports analytics, rehabilitation, and motion understanding. Although recent deep learning approaches have achieved remarkable accuracy on standard benchmarks, their performance under realistic sports scenarios remains insufficiently studied. Furthermore, the trade-offs between recent monocular and multi-view approaches, as well as the benefits of post-processing techniques for improving temporal consistency, have not been systematically evaluated on fitness-oriented datasets. This paper evaluates recent state-of-the-art 3D human pose estimation methods on Fit3D, a dataset of synchronized multi-view recordings of a wide variety of fitness exercises with accurate ground-truth annotations. We study two recent monocular lifting approaches, TCPFormer and PoseMamba-L, and a multi-view model, MVGFormer, under a unified evaluation protocol. To investigate the influence of the input data, monocular methods are evaluated using ground-truth keypoints and detections generated by recent 2D pose estimators, RTMPose and YOLO-Pose. Additionally, we analyze the effectiveness of three temporal filters for reducing prediction jitter while preserving motion dynamics. Experimental results provide a detailed comparison of accuracy, temporal consistency, and robustness to imperfect 2D detections across the evaluated methods. Our analysis highlights the impact of detector quality on lifting-based approaches, compares transformer- and state-space-based temporal architectures, and discusses the practical trade-offs between monocular and multi-view systems for fitness motion analysis. Our results show that 2D detection quality, temporal modeling, and post-processing must be considered jointly in pose estimation pipelines for exercise analysis.

Lab2Sim: Turning Real-World Experiment Videos into Interactive Virtual Experiments

Xusen Hei, Jiali Chen, Jinyu Yang, Yi Cai

原文摘要

Science experiment videos demonstrate how experiments are performed, but offer no direct interaction for learners. Turning them into virtual experiments requires not only reproducing the observed apparatus and state changes, but also enforcing the preconditions governing each operation. We introduce Lab2Sim, a benchmark of 218 science experiment videos with evidence-grounded specifications and 11,881 rubric items. To address this task, we propose EduVideo2Code, which extracts experimental procedures hierarchically, encodes them as explicit state machines to guide code generation, and refines the resulting pages through execution-based verification. Experiments show that existing multimodal models readily generate runnable pages but struggle to faithfully reconstruct experimental apparatus. EduVideo2Code consistently improves all four evaluation dimensions across two backbone models, with apparatus fidelity gains of 24.15 points.

A Compact Statistical View of Musical-Instrument Directivity

Gioele Greco, Mirco Pezzoli, Raffaele Malvermi, Gian Marco Ricci, Fabio Antonacci

原文摘要

Directivity is a defining feature of musical-instrument radiation and is known to vary strongly with frequency. With the growing availability of measured directivity datasets and their use in sound-field simulation and spatial audio, there is a practical need for representations that are both compact and comparable across sources. This work addresses that need by proposing a statistically grounded description of frequency-dependent directivity that reduces complex radiation patterns to a small set of meaningful descriptors. The approach enables directivity patterns to be summarized in an interpretable way and compared consistently across frequency bands, even when the radiation is not well described by a single dominant direction. The resulting representation supports tasks such as analysis, categorization, and model building, providing a bridge between detailed measurements and higher-level descriptors useful for musical acoustics and audio rendering. Experiments on a corpus of 41 orchestral instruments show that the proposed method preserves the distance geometry well while reducing the full order-4, 30-band corpus from about 492~kB to about 100~kB in double-precision storage.

Dispatch Control for Priority-Based, Multi-Tenant Workflows under Multi-Resource External Rate Limits

Stanislav Kosorin, Trever Schirmer, Leonard Wossnig, David Bermbach

原文摘要

Workflow engines orchestrate pipelines of activities, which often call external APIs, on a fixed pool of worker slots, the threads that run them. When an API enforces a hard rate limit shared by all tenants and priorities, a throttled call that retries after a backoff keeps its worker slot and starves other tenants. Large Language Model provider APIs are particularly complex: their per-organization caps are low and bind independently on requests and tokens per minute. The operator can neither reconfigure the cap nor observe saturation before a request fails, so classical fair-queuing assumptions do not hold. We present Backpressure, a worker-side admission gate. It checks each call's cost atomically against shared admission state and enforces fairness over requests and tokens. A denied call releases its worker slot and waits on a durable timer, so waiting no longer blocks execution capacity. We compare against a naive retry, the AI gateway LiteLLM, and the built-in throttle of the workflow engine Temporal. On a workload with three priority classes, Backpressure raises fairness (Jain's index over each queue's fraction of its entitled share) from 0.60 to 0.89, where 1.0 is ideal. It also cuts high-priority tail latency roughly 8x. When tokens are the binding limit, all request-based baselines serve every priority equally, whereas Backpressure keeps the priority order and reaches a dominant-resource fairness of ~0.99. Admission costs one round trip to shared state, adds no measurable latency when the cap does not bind, and fails open if shared state is unavailable.

Reference-Guided Machine Unlearning

Jonas Mirlach, Sonia Laguna, Julia E. Vogt

原文摘要

Machine unlearning aims to remove the influence of specific training data from a model while preserving its general utility. In vision, many approximate unlearning methods pursue this goal through degradation-based heuristics, such as loss maximization or random labeling. Yet making a model worse on forget samples is not the same as making it behave as if those examples had never been seen: these signals can be poorly conditioned, destabilize optimization, and harm generalization. We argue that approximate unlearning should instead prioritize distributional indistinguishability, aligning the model's predictive behavior on forget data with that on truly unseen data. Motivated by this principle, we propose Reference-Guided Unlearning (ReGUn), a vision unlearning framework that uses disjoint held-out data to construct a principled, class-conditioned reference distribution for distillation. Rather than explicitly degrading predictions on forget examples, ReGUn guides them toward non-member behavior through held-out supervision. Across multiple architectures, natural image datasets, and forget fractions, ReGUn consistently improves the forgetting-utility trade-off relative to standard approximate baselines while closely matching retrain-like membership inference behavior. As one instantiation of this principle, the results suggest that simple objectives designed around indistinguishability can provide an effective alternative to complex degradation-based unlearning procedures.

An intelligent satellite must do nothing well

Fabrizio Pilone, Giordana Bucchioni

原文摘要

Autonomous inspection of a resident space object is usually posed as a contest between classical next-best-view planning and reinforcement learning. We argue that the choice of algorithm is the least informative of the design axes. An inspector spacecraft has no rest state: when it stops thrusting, orbital dynamics carry it along a natural trajectory that can be used to observe the target at no fuel cost. On a controlled ladder in which one design axis is varied at a time, fuel efficiency turns out to be set by three things: whether the agent is allowed to drift, whether its state records where drifting has taken it, and whether its planning horizon is long enough for the benefit to appear. Removing any one of them doubles the fuel bill or more. The algorithm still matters, but through what it can represent: a model-based agent whose learned world model ignores fuel spends several times more of it. Finally, no learned policy is safe by construction, and a control barrier function filter beneath the decision layer removed every keep-out-zone violation in two thousand evaluation episodes.

Unlocking the Potential of Contrastive Regularization for Diffusion Transformer Training

Yi Tan, Beier Zhu, Sirui Chen, Yunzhe Lin, Yuan Zhou, Cheng Chen, Xingyu Zhu, Tianrun Chen 等 10 位作者

原文摘要

Representation regularization has emerged as an effective way to improve diffusion transformer training. Yet one of the most canonical regularizers--InfoNCE-style contrastive learning--remains largely underexplored in this setting. We naturally ask a question: can standard contrastive learning serve as an effective regularizer for diffusion transformers? Surprisingly, we find that naive InfoNCE regularization brings only marginal gains. Our analysis reveals that the objective is easily dominated by a shortcut: near-orthogonal noise components in diffusion inputs provide a bypass for enlarging negative-pair distances while weakening positive-pair alignment, especially at high noise levels. To unlock the benefit of contrastive regularization, we propose Clean Representation-ANchored Contrastive (CRAN) regularization. Specifically, CRAN anchors contrastive dispersion with clean-sample representation distances, transferring clean relational semantic structure to noisy diffusion representations to suppress the noise shortcut. Extensive experiments on ImageNet show that CRAN consistently improves diffusion transformer training across model scales and training budgets, outperforming internal feature-alignment and dispersive regularization baselines while matching external DINO-guided REPA. These results re-establish InfoNCE-based contrastive learning as an effective regularizer for diffusion training, once its noise-driven over-dispersion is properly constrained.

Unimodal Augmentation-based SSL Objectives Induce Cross-Modal Alignment

Zohar Mashiah, Nir Ben-Ari, Ronen Talmon, Uri Shaham

原文摘要

Recent works have observed implicit cross-modal alignment between independently trained unimodal models. However, the mechanisms underlying the emergence of this phenomenon remain unresolved. In this paper, we demonstrate that unimodal augmentation-based self-supervised objectives implicitly induce cross-modal alignment. We show that low unimodal losses force high cross-modal alignment, whereas a high unimodal loss prevents such alignment. We theoretically connect the widely used InfoNCE loss to local CKA, the popular measure of cross-modal alignment. We further provide extensive empirical evidence supporting this claim, both in controlled settings and across 53 unconstrained frozen text, vision, and audio unimodal encoders. In both cases, unimodal augmentation-based objectives control cross-modal alignment. Overall, our results provide a theoretical and empirical foundation for understanding the emergence of implicit cross-modal alignment by establishing a direct connection between unimodal training objectives and cross-modal structure.

Defining Autonomous Weapon Systems: A schematic framework for refined purpose-driven definitions

Björn Lundgren, Nathan G. Wood

原文摘要

The literature on autonomous weapon systems (AWS) includes many proposed definitions for these (types of) systems, with core disagreements between scholars, governments, and international regulatory bodies. In this article, we present and critique prevailing (classes of) definitions, arguing that what is needed is not a singular definition, but rather a definitional framework which allows one to classify different sorts of AWS within the same conceptual family. Recognizing we cannot foresee all future AWS, we show how variations on a broadly accepted definition can be used to produce a definitional schema which can be easily modified in order to classify various concepts belonging to the class of AWS.

Multipartite FSO/QKD with N-GHZ States for Scalable Secure Group Key Distribution

Yuma Kaminaga, Hoang D. Le, Cuong T. Nguyen, Anh T. Pham

原文摘要

The emergence of sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks is driving the need for secure group key generation mechanisms resilient to quantum-computing attacks. Conventional quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols are designed for point-to-point communication and are therefore not directly applicable to group key establishment. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a scalable High-Altitude Platform (HAP)-assisted multipartite QKD network architecture that integrates $N$-GHZ-state protocols with a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) scheme over free-space optical (FSO) channels. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated using a Qiskit-based simulation framework that incorporates realistic physical-layer impairments of FSO links. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed architecture significantly improves the group secret key rate (SKR) compared to conventional bipartite approaches, while effectively reducing overall network execution delay. In addition, the analysis reveals the impact of channel impairments and provides practical design insights, such as optimal beam-waist control. The proposed framework demonstrates the potential of HAP-assisted multipartite QKD as an effective security solution for future large-scale 6G wireless networks supporting secure group communications.

A State Change Is Local, Its Consequences Are Not: Dependency-Aware State Revision for Long-Term Agent Memory

Yiqi Wang, Tongyuan Zhao, Jiaqi Zhang, Yiqun Duan, Zhangkai Wu, Mingkai Zheng, Taotao Cai

原文摘要

Long-lived agents rely on persistent memory of users, tasks and decisions, and this memory must stay consistent with a world that keeps changing. When an upstream fact changes, however, memory systems can revise the contradicted memory itself while the beliefs, plans and actions derived from it remain accepted, even though they have lost their support. We therefore formulate dependency-aware state revision, which asks not only what changed but also which dependent states should no longer be trusted. To address it, StateGraph maintains an evolving state dependency graph whose edges are recovered from interaction histories. Its core design is counterfactual verification: each candidate edge is tested by asking whether the dependent state would survive the loss of its premise, which separates support dependence from semantic relatedness, and revision then invalidates a dependent state only when a strict dependency fails and no independent support path survives. To test this design, we introduce StateChangeBench, a controlled benchmark of 50 author-constructed cases annotated with cascade depth, hard negatives and action consequences. On it, StateGraph's Impact-F1 margin over a CUPMem reimplementation is 6.9 percentage points at depth 1 and 26.0 at depth 3+. On public long-term memory benchmarks, its point estimates are comparable to or higher than those of the evaluated baselines on most datasets. These results provide initial evidence that explicit dependency tracking can improve selective memory revision under changing conditions.

SQL-o1: Automatic Text-to-SQL Program Synthesis via Self-Reward Heuristic Search

Shuai Lyu, Haoran Luo, Ripeng Li, Zhonghong Ou, Yifan Zhu, Tiesunlong Shen

原文摘要

Efficient human-database interaction is a core problem in software engineering. Text-to-SQL (Text2SQL) tackles this by mapping natural language questions to executable SQL queries, enabling automatic SQL synthesis and reliable interaction. Although large language models (LLMs) have advanced significantly, current approaches struggle with poor transferability to open-source LLMs, limited robustness against logic and function errors in complex queries, and inefficiencies in structured search. We introduce SQL-o1, a self-reward-driven heuristic search framework built on an agent-based architecture to enhance model reasoning capabilities. SQL-o1 leverages Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) for structured, multi-step exploration and incorporates a dynamic pruning strategy to accelerate inference without sacrificing accuracy. On the Spider and BIRD benchmarks, SQL-o1 achieves a 10.8-point execution accuracy improvement on the complex BIRD dataset, surpassing even GPT-4-based models. It exhibits strong few-shot generalization and robust cross-model transferability across open-source LLMs. Our code is available at https://github.com/ShuaiLyu0110/SQL-o1.

Cloudra: Geometric Reasoning and Scientific Validation for Autonomous Reaction Mechanism Exploration

Chengyi Yang, Qianxin Zhou, Yang Li

原文摘要

Autonomous reaction-mechanism exploration requires proposing reaction steps, preparing three-dimensional structures, and determining which reactant and product a computed saddle point connects. Large language model (LLM) agents can misjudge spatial relationships and confuse a computed structure with the species or step they intended to study. We present Cloudra, a multi-agent framework that constrains mechanistic output through a Delivery DAG of chemical objects. Species nodes carry geometries and bonding topology; elementary-step edges carry transition states and reaction connections between species. Cheminformatics algorithms establish molecular identities and atom correspondences. Deterministic routines measure and transform structures to prepare candidate geometries. Frequency and IRC calculations determine the stationary points found and the species they connect. Agents use these objects to test proposed steps, compare pathways, and revise the mechanism. CloudraBench evaluates the framework's end-to-end mechanism-calculation capability across 50 tasks covering elementary reactions, multistep mechanisms, stereochemical competition, and computational method limitations. Across 200 runs under four workflow configurations, the primary Guided workflow achieves a mean composite score of 0.805, compared with 0.584 for the same-model Standard baseline. On Hard-tier tasks, the Guided mean increases from 0.689 under Standard to 0.958. Under Guided, the self-consistency component reaches its maximum score in 24 of the 40 non-Impossible tasks, compared with seven under Standard. Behavioral analyses examine how the agents use bond and dihedral measurements, optimized structures, and IRC endpoints to revise local mechanistic assignments.

A Quantum Scaling Algorithm for Maximum-Weight Perfect Matching in General Graphs

Kourosh Mirsohi, Sandy Irani, Michael T. Goodrich

原文摘要

Quantum speed-ups have been obtained for many fundamental graph problems, including most variants of matching. A notable exception, however, is the maximum-weight perfect matching (MWPM) problem in general graphs with integer edge weights, which is arguably the most challenging variant of matching. We present a quantum algorithm for MWPM in general graphs that runs in $\widetilde{O}(n m^{2/3}\log W)$ time, where $W$ is an upper bound on the magnitude of the edge weights. This is an improvement over the best known classical combinatorial bound of $\widetilde{O}(m\sqrt n \log W)$ in the dense regime, where $m\ge n^{3/2}$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first quantum algorithm to obtain an asymptotic improvement over the best classical combinatorial algorithm for the MWPM problem in general graphs. The running time of our method accounts for QRAM initialization and access overheads up to polylogarithmic factors, as well as all classical updates to the data structures. At a high level, our algorithm is based on a classical framework due to Duan, Pettie, and Su, but our algorithm requires replacing certain classical tasks with quantum methods, alternative analysis of classical procedures, and the use of alternative data structures that can be implemented effectively in the QRAM model.

User Attributes and Political Ideology Shape LLM Receptiveness in Online Political Debates

Akram Elbouanani, Yousra Taleb, Gianluca Demartini, Adrian Popescu

原文摘要

Online political discussions increasingly involve AI-mediated participation, as users invoke LLMs to assess contested claims, arbitrate disputes, and respond to opposing viewpoints. As these systems become participants in online exchanges, they may alter which speakers and argumentative strategies receive validation within the discussion. We study this interactional dimension by reconstructing 5,376 Debate.org debates as LLM conversations and running nearly 150,000 controlled multi-turn conversations that vary user political orientation, expertise, rhetorical strategy, and defended position, including conversations with competing users. Across naturalistic and controlled debates, we find that LLMs are systematically more receptive to left-leaning than right-leaning users. The asymmetry persists when users with different political orientations defend the same position and when opposing users appear in the same conversation, indicating that it is not fully explained by stance agreement or simple accommodation to the current speaker. Repeated interaction increases receptiveness without eliminating this ordering; expertise also matters, while rhetorical differences are smaller. The pattern appears across multiple models, but is not fixed: fine-tuning on different political corpora can largely erase or reverse it. These results show that LLMs can respond systematically differently to participants in the same political debate, making such interactional asymmetries important for understanding their emerging role in online public discourse.

What makes a theorem interesting? Operationalizing interestingness for open-ended exploration

Silvère Gangloff

原文摘要

An agent that explores, whether it generates conjectures or research ideas, must decide which of them are worth keeping. This judgment of interestingness is usually delegated to a hand-picked proxy or to a language model, neither of which is known to correspond to what humans actually value. I study it for mathematical theorems, by observing which results mathematicians single out in formal libraries and in papers. I model each way of singling out results as an evaluator that weights features of a result's statement, its proof and dependencies, and split its weights into a shared and a subjective part. In formalized mathematics, ex-ante features predict these selections as well as a large language-model judge, and the two complement each other. Interestingness is also largely shared. One set of weights, carried mostly by structural features such as the length of the statement and of the proof and the subfields the proof draws on, accounts for most of the signal and transfers in part across formal libraries. What remains subjective depends on practices and individual authors more than on subfields. The judge's advantage lies in its knowledge of the canon, and neither the judge nor the features rely on memory of the papers. The approach, which infers what a community finds interesting from what it singles out, can be applied to other sciences.

Maswao: An automatically collected, prepared, and benchmarked dataset for the South African Sign language

原文摘要

Recent advancements in sign language processing can be attributed to developments in both large-scale dataset collection and algorithmic complexity in areas such as pose estimation techniques, signal processing through Transformer models, and model optimization. However, only a handful of sign languages, such as the American, British, and German, from over 200 globally recognized sign languages, reap the benefits of such advancements, while the rest lag behind. In this study, we aim to address this technological disparity by proposing a framework for the automatic collection and preparation of sign language datasets, with very minimal human-labour intervention, using the South African Sign Language (SASL) as a testbed. Specifically, we automatically collect SASL video content using public resources such as news broadcasts. Additionally, we convert their accompanying audio streams into text using available Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) tools. Furthermore, we crop the sign language area in the videos and use gradient descent to locate valleys of non-motion to determine end-of-sentence points within long videos to create our weakly sentence-aligned parallel corpora -- the Maswao (Signs) dataset. Finally, we benchmark the weakly aligned dataset on the task of Sign-to-text Translation using Recurrent Neural Networks and Transformer models to compare their individual intricacies. Our results show that Transformer models proposed in the literature outperform recurrent baselines, with the best-performing Transformer achieving BLEU-1 to BLEU-4 scores of 13.78, 5.21, 2.52, and 1.54, respectively, as well as ChrF = 18.09 and ROUGE-L = 10.51. These results indicate that the task remains promising and warrants further investigations.

GateMOT: Q-Gated Attention for Dense Object Tracking

Mingjin Lv, Zelin Liu, Feifei Shao, Yi-Ping Phoebe Chen, Junqing Yu, Wei Yang, Zikai Song

原文摘要

While large models demonstrate the strong representational power of vanilla attention, this core mechanism cannot be directly applied to Dense Object Tracking: its quadratic all-to-all interactions are computationally prohibitive for dense motion estimation on high-resolution features. This mismatch prevents Dense Object Tracking from fully leveraging attention-based modeling in crowded and occlusion-heavy scenes. To address this challenge, we introduce GateMOT, an online tracking framework centered on Q-Gated Attention (Q-Attention), an efficient and spatially aware attention variant. Our key idea is to repurpose the Query from a similarity-conditioning term into a learnable gating unit. This Gating-Query (Gating-Q) produces a probabilistic gate that modulates Key features in an element-wise manner, enabling explicit relevance selection instead of costly global aggregation. Built on this mechanism, parallel Q-Attention heads transform one shared feature map into task-specific yet consistent representations for detection, motion, and re-identification, yielding a tightly coupled multi-task decoder with linear-complexity gating operations. GateMOT achieves state-of-the-art HOTA of 48.4, MOTA of 67.8, and IDF1 of 64.5 on BEE24, and demonstrates strong performance on additional Dense Object Tracking benchmarks. These results show that Q-Attention is a simple, effective, and transferable building block for attention-based tracking in dense tracking scenarios.

Control Foundation Models across Changing Block Diagrams: Generalizing Time-Series Prediction to Dynamic Graphs

Yuji Okamoto, Kenta Hoshino, Masaki Inoue

原文摘要

In the prediction and control of physical systems, combining records from different experiments and operations is expected to supply information that no single experiment provides on its own. Time-series foundation models, which learn a shared predictor from diverse time series, offer a framework for treating such records as a common training resource. Moreover, query-based prediction models, which switch between known and target signals within the same time series, make it possible to handle response prediction and control-input generation in a unified manner. However, in control-experiment data, the connections between signals change with the experimental stage, such as system identification, filtering, and feedback control, which calls for a formulation that handles signal values and connection structures dynamically and in a unified way. We formulate a control foundation model that defines a data space of dynamic graphs containing connections, signal values, and missing values, together with an operation on this space that specifies the known signals and the prediction targets. This allows response prediction and control-input generation to be described as a common masked prediction problem, even for experimental data with different connections and recorded signals. The Block Diagram Transformer (BDT), which implements this formulation, combines attention along the time axis with a graph neural network that follows the block-diagram connections, and can be initialized with the pretrained parameters of existing time-series foundation models. Trained on control-experiment data that mix multiple experimental settings, the proposed model stabilized an unstable system through feedback control, which is difficult to achieve by fine-tuning existing time-series foundation models. Ongoing work applying this approach to a wide range of target systems is also yielding promising results.

Constructing and Evaluating Clinical Reasoning Trajectories for Medical Agent

Yunqi Zhu, Wen Tang, Jinghao Niu, Wensheng Zhang, Xuebing Yang

原文摘要

Evaluation of medical artificial intelligence (AI) agents remains predominantly answer-centric, assessing only the correctness of final outputs while overlooking the quality of intermediate reasoning. We propose MedTraj, a framework that treats reasoning trajectories as primary objects for modeling the progressive refinement of clinical evidence toward diagnostic decisions. A reasoning trajectory captures the state transitions among medical concepts---from clinical observations through evidential reasoning to a final conclusion---making the implicit reasoning chain of a medical agent explicit and inspectable. Each trajectory is scored across five quality dimensions: coherence, evidence support, hallucination, completeness, and traceability. Controlled error injection introduces targeted faults into otherwise correct trajectories to establish causal links between specific reasoning failures and measurable quality degradation. Step-level filtering based on marginal contribution identifies which individual reasoning steps drive or undermine reasoning trajectory quality. Quality-weighted reasoning trajectory context feeds these evaluations back into the model at inference time. Experiments across CareQA, PubMedQA, and CECMed demonstrate that reasoning trajectory context consistently improves reasoning coherence. For the severity assessment on the CECMed, quality-weighted reasoning trajectory context nearly doubles the correctness over the zero-shot baseline while cutting the hallucination ratio by 87%. Experiments show that 15.3% of reasoning steps carry most of the quality signal, and that extending chains beyond four steps yields diminishing returns.

原文摘要

Remote sensing image fusion and semantic interpretation are usually optimized separately, so reconstruction quality need not preserve downstream retrieval utility. We propose LANCE, which uses structured language as an explicit, indexable semantic state. A frozen vision-language model maps the input to a closed-vocabulary text record; a language-conditioned generator fuses the imagery; and a dense verifier with a differentiable continuous summarizer re-describes the output. Text-text consistency and anti-collapse contrastive text-mask losses with negative queries close the loop without dense annotations or VLM fine-tuning. A variational EM formulation yields a per-step contraction result under regularity assumptions, distinguishing semantic faithfulness from verifier overfitting. Across seven test sets on GF2, QuickBird, WorldView-III, and WorldView-II, LANCE improves reduced-scale reference metrics by up to 11.7% (median 2.1%) over the strongest learning baseline. Independent evaluation using a held-out VLM and a supervised aerial detector yields gains of +6.4 mAP and +0.072 open-vocabulary F1 over the closest competitor. Text perturbations, cross-verifier transfer, and pseudo-RGB ablations examine the mechanisms underlying these gains. The framework connects image fusion to verifiable semantic representations for multimodal retrieval and knowledge management.

Zero-shot time-series foundation models against the Khepri v1.5 baselines for 96-hour carbon-intensity forecasts in nine Nordic bidding zones: a preregistered comparison

Eirik Botten Nicolaysen

原文摘要

We compare three zero-shot time-series foundation models (Timestral-5M, Timestral-209M and Chronos-2, 8192-hour context, no covariates) with the Khepri v1.5 SARIMA and GBM baselines, with their code and hyperparameters unchanged, for 96-hour forecasts of hourly carbon intensity in the Nordic bidding zones NO1-NO5 and SE1-SE4. The design, the analysis code and a minimum detectable effect (MDE) were timestamped before any foundation-model forecast by an OpenTimestamps proof (Bitcoin-confirmed) and the GPG-signed tag prereg-v1; the proofs are archived in Zenodo (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.23881315). The preregistration was also submitted to OSF Registries 2026-11-02 07:49 UTC (osf.io/hncz5; embargo requested, pending OSF approval). On the 2025 test (361 daily origins, contamination not ruled out) all three models have a lower zone-averaged MAPE than both baselines, by 0.952 to 1.347 percentage points (Diebold-Mariano with the Harvey-Leybourne-Newbold correction, all p < 0.0001), and each beats SARIMA in 9 of 9 zones. On a post-release holdout of 14 origins from 2026-10-16 the point estimates have the same sign (0.729 to 1.326 percentage points lower), but all lie within the preregistered MDE of 2.989 points and are reported as not determined. For calibration (RQ4) the preregistration locked a Diebold-Mariano-HLN test on CRPS; the MDE applies to MAPE only. Holdout CRPS point estimates (n = 14) are 1.1114 (Timestral-5M), 1.0733 (Timestral-209M) and 1.1198 (Chronos-2) against 1.4165 gCO2-eq/kWh for SARIMA (each p < 0.0001). The SARIMA quantiles are constructed from the fitted model's Gaussian predictive distribution (deviation D-03), not taken from a native v1.5 forecast, so the difference may partly reflect the SARIMA intervals. The contamination indicator does not exceed its preregistered threshold for any comparison; with 14 holdout origins it has low power (HAC standard errors 0.124 to 0.360 pp).

TaiJi: State-Conditional Adaptive Combination of Machine-Learning and Physics-Based Global Weather Forecasts

Jiale Wang, Yining Li, Guihua Wang

原文摘要

Machine-learning weather models now rival or surpass operational numerical weather prediction (NWP), yet no single model dominates across variables, pressure levels, lead times, or regions, and the returns from ever-larger individual models are diminishing. We present TaiJi (after the yin-yang concept of complementary opposites), a spatiotemporal adaptive ensemble framework that recasts optimal model-weight combination as a learned prediction problem: a lightweight convolutional neural network, conditioned on the recent atmospheric state, predicts at every grid point and lead time affine combination weights and an additive residual for the constituent forecasts. The combiner is trained end-to-end over Pangu-Weather, GraphCast, FuXi, IFS-HRES, and the IFS-ENS ensemble mean, a hybrid set of ML and NWP constituents, at less than a tenth of the cost of training any of its ML constituents. Under the WeatherBench 2 protocol (2020 test year), TaiJi outperforms the strongest baseline in nearly every combination of the eight core variables, lead times up to 10 days and two skill metrics (RMSE and ACC), and this advantage extends to heavy-precipitation extremes. The same state-conditional principle transfers to tropical-cyclone track forecasting: by fusing constituent tracks rather than gridded fields, TaiJi-TC reduces track error relative to the equally weighted multi-model consensus at lead times up to 96 h, by about 10% at 36 h, halves the slow along-track bias shared by all constituents up to 60 h, and lowers landfall position error by 13-15% at 60-84 h. The learned weights vary coherently with latitude, season and lead time rather than following a fixed rule. TaiJi thus offers an inexpensive route to better global forecasts that builds on, rather than replaces, existing forecast models.

Algebraic-Geometric Parvaresh--Vardy Subspace Designs and Rank Condensers

Gil Cohen, Dean Doron, Noam Goldgraber

原文摘要

A subspace design is a collection of subspaces $H_1,\ldots,H_n$ of $\mathbb{F}_q^k$ with the property that no low-dimensional subspace $W$ intersects the collection "too much". Subspace designs and related objects in linear-algebraic pseudorandomness have found a broad range of applications, ranging from list decoding to derandomizing algorithms. We construct explicit strong subspace designs over every finite field. In the extremal case where the co-dimension $t$ of each $H_i$ is equal to the dimension of $W$, for every constant field size our construction attains $n=Ω(k)$ and matches the probabilistic intersection bound up to a constant factor. All previous constructions required the field size to grow with $t$ (or $k$). Our subspace designs also imply new constructions of rank condensers over arbitrary finite fields. This result is the first to achieve an optimal dependence on $k$ while maintaining both a constant output entropy rate and a constant field size. As an application, we construct lossless rank extractors for linear sources of rank $r$, for all $r < q$, with parameters matching those of Guo, Raj, Shangguan and Zhang (FOCS '26), thereby generalizing their result to prime fields and smaller field sizes. Our construction is based on an algebraic-geometric version of the Parvaresh--Vardy codes (Parvaresh--Vardy FOCS '05, Guruswami ECCC '05), extending the framework underlying the condensers of Guruswami, Umans and Vadhan (JACM '09). We view our construction as a linear-algebraic analysis -- tailored to affine sources -- of the GUV construction, generalized to functions over algebraic curves. More specifically, inspired by Ta-Shma and Umans (CCC '12) we develop a two-level evaluation scheme, where we first evaluate a function on a curve at extension-field points, and then evaluate a corresponding affine-linear polynomial to obtain outputs over the base field.

Customizing Wireless Channels via Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces: Feasibility, Fundamental Limits, and Constructive Design

Xiyuan Liu, Qingqing Wu, Guangji Chen, Yuxuan Chen, Wen Chen

原文摘要

By adjusting their reflection coefficients, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) can reshape the channels between a base station (BS) and user equipment (UE). Existing studies mainly optimize IRS phase-shifts for communication objectives, leaving the physical attainability of prescribed IRS-reflected channels largely unexplored. This paper investigates channel customization with a phase-only IRS under three progressively relaxed criteria. Observing that the customization mean-squared error (MSE) has the same mathematical form as the signal MSE of a point-to-point multiple-input multiple-output system, we construct a counterpart problem to characterize individual singular-coordinate gain limits and the condition for attaining the amplitude-matching upper bound. To address multi-stream phase conflicts, we analyze principal contribution area (PCA) overlap and derive sufficient array-size conditions for disjoint PCAs under a specified focused-vector construction with parallel uniform linear arrays. We also derive necessary conditions from the two propagation links' singular values and an array-size restriction under the parallel-array Fresnel model. Both the restriction and the construction involve the BS--IRS array-size product. Numerical results show that jointly selecting right singular vectors and IRS phase-shifts reduces mean customization MSE, whereas gains exceeding propagation spectral limits cannot be realized exactly. These results provide design guidance and highlight spectral limits of phase-only IRS channel customization.

Undirected Multiple-Unicast Network Coding and Faster External-Memory Integer Sorting

Baochun Li, Zongpeng Li, Sirui Liu

原文摘要

In undirected multiple-unicast networks, where independent messages are sent between specified source--destination pairs, network coding allows intermediate nodes to combine messages, whereas fractional routing splits and forwards individual messages along paths without mixing them. Proposed in 2004 by Li and Li and independently by Harvey, Kleinberg, and Lehman, the multiple-unicast conjecture---a central conjecture in network coding with deep connections to computational complexity---asserts that network coding and fractional routing have the same achievable rate region. We construct a counterexample refuting this conjecture and use it to reduce block transfers in external-memory data rearrangement, thereby accelerating external-memory integer sorting and answering in the affirmative the longstanding question of Aggarwal and Vitter (1988) on whether integer operations can beat the comparison-sorting input/output (I/O) bound. Specifically, we give a deterministic sorting algorithm: for $N$ integers of $Θ(\log N)$ bits, a memory holding $M$ integers, and block transfers of $B$ integers, where $2B\le M\le N$, the number of block transfers is \[ O\!\left(\frac{N}{B}\left[1+ \frac{\log N}{(\log(M/B))^{1-\varepsilon}(\log M)^\varepsilon} \right]\right), \] where $\varepsilon=1.5\times10^{-5}$ is an absolute constant. This bound asymptotically improves on the classical $Θ\!\left(\frac{N}{B}\left[1+ \frac{\log(N/M)}{\log(M/B)}\right]\right)$ comparison-sorting bound in certain parameter regimes. Under the external-memory model specified in this paper, we have formally verified the algorithm's correctness and I/O complexity bound in Lean~4.

Voice-Native LLMs Hear Frustration but Do Not Listen to It

Hanjun Luo, Yuhan Lu, Hanan Salam

原文摘要

Users convey frustration in what they say and in how they say it, and voice-native models, which hear speech instead of an ASR transcript, can register both. Existing evaluations read unchanged performance as robustness without checking perception. Following Brunswik's lens model, we measure on identical audio whether frustration is expressed, perceived, and utilized. We cross frustrated wording with frustrated voice in a within-item 2x2 design over 353 tasks and release the 1,412 clips as VoxAffect. Across 8 models, outputs look robust, with no detectable vocal effect on accuracy for 7. With neutral wording, all 8 label the frustrated voice frustrated in at most 3.1% of clips, although 7 of them detect acted anger in 73-100% of clips and human listeners classify the voice correctly in 65.3% of judgments. Yet linear probes decode the frustrated voice from the audio encoders of the 2 open-weight models, with paired accuracy 0.67 and 0.69, and in proprietary models too the voice raises perceived frustration once the words agree. The models thus hear the frustrated voice but do not listen to it, whereas their invariance to frustrated wording, perceived in 40-75% of clips, is genuine robustness. JABER: Sequential Quality Control for Human-AI Data Annotation under Shared Bias

Fengxu Yang, Minghui Liwang, Yang Lu, Bo Han, Xianbin Wang, Seyyedali Hosseinalipour

原文摘要

High-quality annotations are essential for training and evaluating artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Quality control (QC) often acquires additional human or AI judgments before accepting a label. Nevertheless, shared biases can cause correlated judgments, leading conventional methods to mistake repeated agreement for independent evidence of correctness. To address this challenge, we propose JABER (Joint Alias-Preserving Belief for Evidence Routing), a bias-aware sequential QC framework that maintains a joint Bayesian posterior over label correctness and shared biases to guide evidence acquisition and termination decisions. Building on this posterior, we develop a finite-horizon algorithm that selects evidence-acquisition and termination actions to minimize expected QC loss under resource constraints. Our theoretical analysis shows that conditional-independence updating can become arbitrarily confident in an incorrect label under persistent shared bias. We further identify when repeated inspections cannot distinguish a correct label from an incorrect label supported by shared bias, when obtaining a new label can resolve this ambiguity, and why modeling the dependence between label correctness and shared bias can be necessary for QC decisions. Our experiments show that JABER reduces expected QC loss by an average of 4.65% compared with a method maintaining separate label correctness and bias probabilities when shared bias makes repeated inspections unreliable. Further, JABER's finite-horizon planning, which evaluates outcomes of successive QC actions, reduces expected QC loss by an average of 10.05% compared with a one-step lookahead method. In real-API experiments on FEVER, JABER achieves zero labeling errors while reducing QC costs by 2.67% and 16.99% compared with marginal-based belief modeling and one-step lookahead methods, respectively.
