Orthogonal and Parametrized Multi-Attribute Steering of LLMs

Remy Ogasawara, Cullen Anderson, Narmeen Fatimah Oozeer, Foad Namjoo, Amir Abdullah, Jens Kristian Refsgaard Schou, Jeff M. Phillips

原文摘要

Activation steering offers an effective and efficient way to modify an LLM's behavior at inference time. However, it remains unclear how to apply steering such that the signal is consistently strong and the steering strength has a universally interpretable meaning. We address this first by identifying the most steerable interval for each steering vector and rescaling the steering range accordingly. Building on this, we introduce a more interpretable method for steering, called parameterized steering which instead of pushing activations in a direction, it sets them at the desired trait strength. Next, with multi-trait steering, we find that naively combining vectors causes them to interfere with one another. In response, we develop a method to orthogonalize the vectors; it decouples these traits, allowing a model to exhibit one behavior without inducing the others, thus enabling multiple traits to be steered simultaneously.

Interventional Training Reduces Causal Bypass in In-Context Introspection

Zilu Tang, Jongin Kim, Kerem Sahin, David Atkinson, Aaron Mueller, Derry Wijaya

原文摘要

Introspection, the ability of a system to access and reason about its internal signals, is crucial for language model (LM) self-consistency and scalable interpretability. Prior work argues that LMs possess introspective capabilities, and that training (SFT) could enhance such behavior. However, most setups leave open the possibility of "causal bypass," in which the self-report relies on signals that are correlated with the self-report's subject, while being causally unrelated to it. Although high-level concepts are difficult to intervene on, lower-level signals (such as a single neuron activation) allow precise interventions. Understanding such signals can serve as a minimal prerequisite before understanding more complex introspection. In this study, we train hundreds of introspectors across three low-level signal types and eight LMs. We find that straightforward SFT training leads to causal bypass, and propose interventional training, an alternative where we train the model to report on counterfactually perturbed values. This method enables more accurate introspection of endogenous $\textit{and}$ injected signals, particularly in out-of-distribution (OOD) data. The mechanism generalizes across token positions and scales with more data. Our results demonstrate that while causally grounded introspection is possible, it is not guaranteed -- emphasizing the need to train on mechanisms, rather than behaviors alone.

When Does GenAI Use Support Critical Thinking? A Cross-Cultural Structural Account of Transactive Memory with GenAI

Mahir Akgun, Sacip Toker

原文摘要

Whether generative AI (GenAI) use helps or hinders critical thinking remains contested, and existing accounts emphasize exposure to the tool rather than how a person structures their engagement with it. Extending Transactive Memory Systems (TMS) theory to human-AI partnerships, we test a structural account of critical thinking in GenAI-assisted academic work among 891 college students in the United States and Türkiye. Self-appraised thinking ability and confidence in the partnership shaped how much practical experience a person built up with GenAI, but neither predicted critical thinking directly. That experience mattered only through two downstream behaviors, dividing and coordinating cognitive labor with the tool, and actively reworking its output rather than accepting it as given. A multigroup comparison found this structure largely invariant, with two theoretically interpretable exceptions. This study offers a structural, TMS-based account of critical thinking in GenAI-assisted work.

Octopus: Agentic Multi-Table Discovery over Tabular Data Lakes

Wen-Zhi Li, Sainyam Galhotra

原文摘要

Tabular data discovery aims to identify the tables relevant to a natural-language question from a large collection of heterogeneous data. Existing systems typically assume that a question is answered by a single table and rely on retrieval pipelines constructed through substantial offline preprocessing. These assumptions become restrictive when relevant information is distributed across multiple tables. In this paper, we present Octopus, a lightweight agentic framework for multi-table data discovery. Octopus follows a thin-harness design that combines lightweight offline semantic guidance with adaptive access to raw tabular data. At query time, an LLM agent dynamically orchestrates semantic column search, structured tabular operations, and general-purpose execution to locate and verify relevant tables based on intermediate observations. We further introduce a benchmark that explicitly evaluates multi-table data discovery, covering both settings where multiple tables independently answer a question and settings where multiple tables must be joined. Experimental results across four independent-discovery datasets and two join-based datasets show that Octopus achieves the highest macro-F1 on all six datasets. It also substantially reduces offline preprocessing overhead relative to Pneuma and online latency and API cost relative to Claude Code. When coupled with the same NL2SQL agent, Octopus yields substantially higher downstream question-answering F1 than Claude Code, showing that improved table discovery provides more complete evidence for downstream analytics. Structural-Test Geometry as an Inductive Bias for Partially Observable World Models

Todd Y. Zhou

原文摘要

Predictive world-model objectives need not organize latent histories according to distinctions required for later control. With privileged simulator access during training, should response-derived structural information be predicted, decoded, or imposed directly on latent geometry--and how do these choices compare with structured belief distillation? We define posterior-marginalized structural tests whose response distributions induce a pseudometric over histories, then train quotient-preserving (QP) world models by aligning shared latent Euclidean distances to that metric. Across a fixed six-task diagnostic suite, the largest differences appear under held-out structural variation: QP improves planning success by 26.1 points $[21.5,30.7]$ over metric decoding and 6.4 points $[3.8,9.0]$ over structured belief distillation. On GridWorld, metric decoding accurately recovers held-out structural distances ($ρ=.91$) while its native latent geometry remains more distorted than QP's (paired IQD difference $.22$ $[.20,.24]$), showing that relational recoverability and direct geometric alignment can diverge.

HEDGE: Gated Hypergraph Memory for Scalable Multi-Agent Debate

Amirhossein Abaskohi, Mahdi Mostajabdaveh, Zirui Zhou

原文摘要

Multi-agent debate systems require agents to retain and revisit arguments across multiple rounds, yet limited context windows and unstructured memories make relevant information increasingly difficult to recover. Existing flat and pairwise-graph memories also struggle to capture higher-order relations, including multi-agent agreement, conflicting evidence, and evolving consensus. We introduce HEDGE, a selective memory framework that represents debate trajectories as semantic hypergraphs. Hyperedges connect related claims across agents, while intra-hyperedge relational graphs preserve fine-grained argumentative structure. A learned memory selection module (MSM), trained through supervised learning and reinforcement learning, routes each memory candidate to STORE, BACKUP, or OMIT, retaining useful information while limiting redundancy. Across seven diverse benchmarks, HEDGE consistently outperforms strong single-agent, multi-agent, and memory baselines, improving accuracy by 5.0 points on average over the strongest multi-agent system with GPT-4o-mini. The gains reach 8.2 points on conflict-heavy tasks, while HEDGE reduces memory usage by 48% and the number of debate rounds by 34%.

Geometric Time Score Estimators: Bridging Self-Predictive Representations and Generative Occupancy Models For Reinforcement Learning

Aravind Venugopal, Grace Liu, Jeff Schneider, Benjamin Eysenbach

原文摘要

In reinforcement learning (RL), temporal reasoning is essential for estimating the density of future outcomes under a policy's occupancy measure. While self-predictive representations have been a dominant paradigm for occupancy density estimation, we find that they yield surprisingly poor estimates. On the other hand, generative occupancy models can produce remarkably accurate samples from the occupancy measure. Yet, they cannot easily recover occupancy densities, limiting their use for control despite their expressivity. In this paper, we propose Geometric Time Score Estimators (GTSE), a framework that bridges the two paradigms by learning occupancy density estimators along probability paths. We analyze how GTSE implicitly induces better occupancy estimators through improved representation learning and show how to directly extract self-predictive representations from this framework. Through experiments across several locomotion and manipulation tasks, we show that GTSE improves performance over state-of-the-art methods by $2\times$ to $6\times$ in goal-conditioned RL settings, and that the representations learned using our framework transfer effectively to downstream RL tasks. Bridging the Simulation-to-Experiment Gap with Generative Models using Adversarial Distribution Alignment

Kai Nelson, Tobias Kreiman, Sergey Levine, Aditi S. Krishnapriyan

原文摘要

A fundamental challenge in science and engineering is the simulation-to-experiment gap. While we often possess prior knowledge of physical laws, these physical laws can be too difficult to solve exactly for complex systems. Such systems are commonly modeled using simulators, which impose computational approximations. Meanwhile, experimental measurements more faithfully represent the real world, but experimental data typically consists of observations that only partially reflect the system's full underlying state. We propose a data-driven distribution alignment framework that bridges this simulation-to-experiment gap by pre-training a generative model on fully observed (but imperfect) simulation data, then aligning it with partial (but real) observations of experimental data. While our method is domain-agnostic, we ground our approach in the physical sciences by introducing Adversarial Distribution Alignment (ADA). This method aligns a generative model of atomic positions -- initially trained on a simulated Boltzmann distribution -- with the distribution of experimental observations. We prove that our method recovers the target observable distribution, even with multiple, potentially correlated observables. We also empirically validate our framework on synthetic, molecular, and experimental protein data, demonstrating that it can align generative models with diverse observables. Our code is available at https://kaityrusnelson.com/ada/.

One Model, Two Roles: Emergent Specialization in a Shared Recurrent Transformer

Jucheng Shen, Barbara Su, Anastasios Kyrillidis

原文摘要

Can a shared-weight recurrent Transformer---one that repeatedly applies the same Transformer to update evolving latent states---develop distinct internal roles without being partitioned into separate modules? We study this in Asymmetric Input Recurrence (AIR), a minimal two-state reasoning architecture in which the same Transformer model is reused for both updates (per literature, L and H) and the only built-in difference in the update rule is that the encoded input is injected during L-updates but not H-updates. Across Sudoku-Extreme and Maze, decoded rollouts reveal a consistent split: $z_H$ behaves like a fully committed proposal state, whereas $z_L$ retains local uncertainty and shifting intermediate structure. Freeze interventions provide evidence of dynamical dependence between the two states, with responses that vary across tasks, intervention directions, and seeds. Ablations show that to induce specialization, the shared model needs to be able to tell the two update types apart, either from input injection asymmetry or from a separate level token. Mechanistically, attention analysis shows that L-updates are consistently more local than H-updates in both Sudoku and Maze. Together, these results show that, in a two-state recurrent setting, a clear state-identity signal can induce stable, related functional roles inside a shared-parameter recurrent Transformer. FlipJev: Fast Black-Box Red Teaming Finds Universal Adversarial Suffixes for Typed Decision Models

Xiaogeng Liu, Xinyan Wang, Chaowei Xiao

原文摘要

Typed decision models are an emerging class of language models that make decisions instead of generating free-text responses. They answer in a single fast and cheap query and are increasingly used, including in security-sensitive tasks. However, red teaming of these models leaves two gaps: existing adaptive attacks do not use their speed, and few studies have searched for universal adversarial examples. We fill both gaps on Jev, the representative typed decision model, with a quick black-box query-based attack that calls no attacker language model. We conduct extensive experiments on 12 datasets with different data types and application scenarios. The results show that Jev resists common prompt injections: no strategy changes a correct answer in 10,240 paired tests. In contrast, our attack finds short suffixes that flip confident answers within minutes. These suffixes are universal: one suffix per dataset flips 43% of unseen documents. Because typed decision models, unlike classic NLP models, can serve many tasks, we test whether these suffixes transfer across tasks. We find that one suffix generated from one task can flip 90-100% of the samples in other tasks. We therefore believe the evaluation of typed decision models must include strict adaptive attacks to fully reveal their robustness.

IDSForge: Self-Explaining Network Intrusion Detection Through Neural Behavioral Rule Learning

Hao Fu, Jinxia Wei, Wan Wei, Chun Long, Degang Sun, Peng Gao

原文摘要

Anomaly-based network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) can detect previously unseen attacks by identifying deviations from benign traffic. However, deep learning-based anomaly detectors typically rely on implicit decision boundaries, and post-hoc explanations may not faithfully reflect the detection logic. This makes alerts difficult to interpret and audit. To address this issue, we present IDSForge, an anomaly-based NIDS that directly learns explicit, executable behavioral rules from benign traffic, making its detection logic interpretable by design. IDSForge uses the same rule set for detection and explanation, ensuring explanation fidelity by construction. It uses an explicit distributional autoencoder trained only on benign samples to learn axis-aligned regions of benign traffic. A high-speed rule compiler then consolidates these instance-specific regions into a compact set of feature-level interval constraints. These rules can be executed directly by popular NIDS engines, supporting high-throughput inspection with low overhead. To adapt to changes in traffic, a self-distillation co-evolver updates the model and rule set incrementally when the false-positive rate on analyst-verified traffic exceeds a target threshold. Our evaluation shows that IDSForge reduces F1 error by $5.7\times$ to $47\times$ relative to state-of-the-art anomaly-based baselines. Deployed in Suricata, IDSForge sustains a throughput of 7.8 Gbps with a median per-packet latency overhead of 3.1 $μ\text{s}$.

Nonlinear Nonlocal Diffusion Equations for the Analysis of Coordination

John S. McAlister, Nina H. Fefferman, Tadele A. Mengesha

原文摘要

Coordination games with explicit spatial or relational structure are of interest to economists, ecologists, sociologists, and others studying emergent global properties in collective behavior. When assemblies of individuals seek to coordinate action with one another through myopic best response or other replicator dynamics, the resulting dynamical system can exhibit many rich behaviors. Here we seek to understand these coordination dynamics in the non-atomic setting by use of a nonlinear, nonlocal diffusion equation framework. For this class of nonlocal equations, we prove existence and uniqueness for the initial value problem in the free boundary case and, with certain conditions on the underlying game theory, we go further and prove a maximum principle, weak regularity results, and a characterization of asymptotic behavior. Additionally, with the help of several numerical results, we present several modeling results, characterizing stationary solutions both rigorously and through numerical experiments.

Inertial Steering and Motion Prediction of Tracked Vehicles on Low-Adherence Surfaces

Mathis Turgeon-Roy, Mohamed Ounally, Veronica Vannini, Olivier Roy, François Pomerleau

原文摘要

Tracked vehicles are widely used in off-road applications, but their conventional motion models often rely on no-slip assumptions that become inaccurate on low-adherence surfaces. Rather than treating inertial effects arising from slip as a disturbance to be minimized, this work investigates how inertial effects arising from a moving mass can be deliberately exploited for steering on low-friction surfaces. A dynamic model for an articulated tracked vehicle with a passive trailer is developed, allowing inertial effects from trailer motion to be captured. The approach is experimentally evaluated on ice, where our dynamic model outperforms the kinematic baseline. We also propose a mixed dynamic-kinematic model to adapt predictions to both surface and situation by exploiting predictions from both methods. Finally, we demonstrate inertial steering on a mono-track vehicle without a conventional steering mechanism, showing that controlled movements of an internal mass can generate turning motion on ice. The resulting behavior can be predicted using the proposed dynamic model by representing the internal mass as a frictionless trailer, revealing the analogous dynamics between the two configurations. These results demonstrate the feasibility of inertial steering as an alternative steering mechanism for tracked vehicles operating in low-adherence environments.

Language-Induced Priors for Domain Adaptation

Qiyuan Chen, Jiayu Zhou, Raed Al Kontar

原文摘要

Domain adaptation faces a fundamental paradox in the cold-start regime. When target data is scarce, statistical methods fail to distinguish relevant source domains from irrelevant ones, which often leads to negative transfer. In this paper, we address this challenge by leveraging expert textual descriptions of the target domain, a resource that is often available but overlooked. We propose a probabilistic framework that translates these semantic descriptions into a choice model, namely a Language-Induced Prior (LIP), that learns the preferences from a pretrained Large Language Model. The LIP is then integrated into an Expectation-Maximization algorithm to identify source relevance. Methodologically, this framework is compatible with any parametric model where a likelihood is available. It allows the LIP to guide the selection of sources when target signals are weak, while gradually refining these choices as samples accumulate. Theoretically, we prove that the estimator roughly matches an oracle cold-start mean squared error under a correct prior, while remaining asymptotically consistent regardless of the quality of the LIP. Empirically, we validated the framework on a descriptive (Gaussian estimation), a predictive (C-MAPSS dataset), and a prescriptive task (MuJoCo Hopper).

Aligning Autoresearch: Co-Improvement between Agents and Humans

原文摘要

Autoresearch agents can now attempt long-horizon AI research end-to-end, i.e., self-improvement. However, best results are still obtained by research agents interacting with human researchers, and improving AI's ability to perform this co-research will only reinforce this effect---a process termed co-improvement (Weston and Foerster, 2025). Further, aligning with human expectations is likely a safer path for research agents, especially given recent agent reward hacking phenomena (OpenAI, 2026b). In this work we address these issues in four ways: (i) we empirically study the role of humans in directing autoresearch agents, focusing on the domain of benchmark creation, and find humans still play a pivotal role particularly in the ideation phase; (ii) we also develop a benchmark, HackBench, that shows current autoresearch agents are not aligned and are unable to achieve hack localization sufficiently; (iii) we present a method to train agents for improved human interaction by using human simulators as a proxy during reinforcement learning (RL); and finally (iv) we develop a method to improve model text generation, and hence agent communication, by RL with rubrics aligned with human experts. Together, our training and evaluation recipes provide a path toward more capable and aligned (co-)research agents.

FASST: A Compact Stateless Atmosphere Model for Long-Term Ocean Coupling

Pratham Aggarwal, Duncan Watson-Parris, William E. Chapman

原文摘要

Coupled climate simulations are computationally expensive, largely because of the atmosphere. We introduce FASST, a coupled climate model that retains the prognostic POP2 ocean while replacing the atmosphere and sea ice with lightweight U-Net emulators. The atmospheric emulator is diagnostic, predicting surface fluxes from the evolving ocean-ice state every $6$ simulated hours, while the sea-ice emulator advances the ice state monthly. For $140$ years of unforced integration, FASST maintains a stable global-mean climate without SST restoring, with post-transient global-mean SST of $291.30 \pm 0.22\mathrm{K}$ compared with $291.25 \pm 0.10\mathrm{K}$ in CESM$2$ piControl. FASST also captures interannual Niño-$3.4$ variability, although with weaker amplitude than CESM ($0.62\mathrm{K}$ versus $1.02\mathrm{K}$). These results demonstrate that a stateless learned atmosphere can sustain stable, free-running coupled climate simulations over century-scale integrations.

Principal-agent hypothesis testing under adaptive experimentation

Ben Chugg, Aritra Ghosh, Aaditya Ramdas

原文摘要

Principal-agent hypothesis testing studies statistical contracts in which a principal rewards an agent according to data the agent generates. Existing work focuses on the single-shot setting, where the agent produces a single dataset. We extend the framework to sequential settings, where evidence accumulates over time, rewards may be deferred to the end or disbursed incrementally, and the agent may stop the contract at a strategically chosen stopping time. We call a contract null-deterring if no ''null agent'' (those whose data-generating distribution lies in the null hypothesis) can profit in expectation under any stopping rule, and our main conceptual result shows that such contracts are characterized by e-processes. We then turn to the agent's best response and identify the optimal stopping rule through the Snell envelope of the reward process. We develop simpler, more interpretable approximations that often require the agent to have only partial knowledge of its distribution.

Pinpointing Super-Quadratic Quantum Enumeration Speedups: Exact and Certified Evaluation of the Guessing-Moment Exponent under Product-Distribution Advice

Carsten Schubert, Niklas Paskarbeit, Maximilian J. Kramer, Jean-Pierre Seifert, Marian Margraf

原文摘要

Grover's algorithm gives an optimal quadratic query advantage for black-box search. In cryptanalysis, however, the search often comes with additional probabilistic advice over the candidates, frequently of product form, e.g. from side-channel leakage on independent key coordinates. Classically, guessing in likelihood order is optimal in expectation. In the quantum setting, Montanaro showed how to achieve an optimal expected query complexity, beating plain Grover on every non-uniform advice distribution (up to a constant overhead factor). What has been missing so far is a finite-size method for evaluating the quantum-classical guessing-moment separation induced by a given advice distribution. We provide such a method for product-distribution advice, thereby sharpening the previous entropy-based estimate of Bashiri et al. We reduce the classical and quantum guessing moments to functionals of the one-dimensional surprisal distribution, obtained for product advice by convolving the per-coordinate surprisal laws. When the surprisals lie on a common arithmetic grid (the commensurate case), the logarithmic moments and hence the speedup exponent can be evaluated as finite sums without discretization error; exponential tilting makes this computation numerically stable. For general product advice, we discretize the surprisals onto a common grid and derive an a-posteriori bound on the resulting binning error. We apply the framework to cold-boot leakage on seeds and block-cipher keys, to template-attack posteriors, and to synthetic i.i.d. Bernoulli posteriors calibrated to average residual ranks reported for Keccak side-channel attacks on ML-KEM and ML-DSA. The resulting exponents substantially exceed 2 in several skewed-advice settings, reaching 3.92 for cold-boot advice and 3.12 in the synthetic models, and include cases where the previous entropy-based bound did not establish an exponent above 2.

Connecting Base-Extension Semantics, Beth Semantics, and Ecumenical Logic

Victor Barroso-Nascimento, Joaquim T. Waddington, Elaine Pimentel

原文摘要

We investigate the relationship between base-extension semantics, Beth semantics, and Prawitz's ecumenical logic. We first present a base-extension semantics for the propositional fragment of Prawitz's system and prove that it is sound and complete. The semantics interprets intuitionistic and classical operators directly within a common proof-theoretic framework, without reducing the classical operators to their intuitionistic counterparts by means of a translation. We then analyse the effect of incorporating Beth-style clauses into base-extension semantics. When arbitrary bases are admitted and $\bot$ is governed by atomic explosion, these clauses trivialise. By contrast, when $\bot$ is treated as a basic sentence and attention is restricted to consistent bases, the Beth-style clauses for atoms and disjunction characterise, respectively, classical atoms and classical disjunction in Prawitz's system. We also obtain equivalent, path-independent formulations of the classical clauses for atoms, disjunction, and implication. These results reveal that the consistency constraint is not merely a technical restriction: within base-extension semantics, it transforms clauses originally associated with intuitionistic semantics into semantic characterisations of classical operators.

Generalizable dose denoising using diffusion transformer framework for pencil beam scanning proton therapy

原文摘要

Background and purpose: Intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) enables conformal dose delivery for head and neck (H&N) cancers. However, its sensitivity to inter-fractional anatomical changes motivates online adaptations, where rapid and accurate Monte Carlo (MC) dose calculation remains a major bottleneck. Low-statistics MC simulations reduce computation time but introduce noise. This study aimed to develop a diffusion-transformer framework to recover high-statistics dose distributions from noisy MC simulations. Materials and methods: A diffusion-transformer-based dose denoising framework was developed. Eighty H&N patients were used for training and additional 10 H&N patients and 30 patients with lung, breast, and prostate cancers (10 per site) were used for evaluation. Noisy and high-statistics dose maps were generated using MCsquare. The model was trained using noisy dose maps and CT images as inputs and high-statistics dose maps as ground truth, with mean squared error, residual, regional mean absolute error (MAE), and dose-volume histogram (DVH) losses. Performance was evaluated using MAE, 3D gamma passing rates, and DVH indices. Results: Mean whole-body MAE ranged from 0.08 +/- 0.06 to 0.20 +/- 0.11 Gy (Relative Biological Effectiveness, RBE) (RBE = 1.1) across test cohorts. Mean whole-body 3 %/2 mm gamma passing rates ranged from 95.8 +/- 0.8 % to 97.6 +/- 0.9 %. DVH indices from high-statistics and predicted dose distributions showed close agreement for clinical target volumes and organs of interest. Conclusions: The diffusion-transformer-based framework denoised low-statistics MC dose distributions. Despite being trained on H&N data, the model generalized to lung, breast, and prostate cohorts without retraining.

Auditable Belief Updates as a Missing Safety Layer for LLM-Powered Multi-Agent Systems

Zhuoyun Li, Boxuan Wang, Jinwei Hu, Xiaowei Huang, Yi Dong

原文摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly being used as cognitive interfaces that shape how users interpret evidence, communicate, and make decisions. As deployed systems become more multimodal, tool-using, and multi-agent, safety failures no longer arise only from isolated harmful outputs, but also from how agents update, store, and propagate epistemic commitments across retrieval, memory, tools, and peer communication. In this paper, we define belief as an engineering abstraction for evidence-based commitments that guide downstream action. Building on this view, we propose the Explicit Belief Multi-Agent System (EB-MAS), which externalizes belief states into a structured substrate, uses belief operators to propose candidate updates, and applies a Cognitive Firewall to bound or reject updates that are weakly evidenced but strongly driven by vulnerability cues. We also discuss the risk of group belief at the group level, including manufactured consensus, collusion, and cascading misinformation, and outline practical integration challenges around grounding, false positives, scalability, and ethical misuse. Therefore, scalable agent safety requires not only better output filtering or stronger base models, but also explicit interfaces for tracing, calibrating, and constraining belief revision at runtime.

Where You Inject Matters: The Trust Region Effect in LLM Agents

原文摘要

LLM agents are increasingly adopted in long-horizon tasks and interact with diverse external environments. Despite their growing capabilities, these agents remain vulnerable to real-world attacks such as indirect prompt injections, which manipulate agents through malicious instructions embedded in external environments. While existing risk assessment work has primarily focused on the injection content, the effect of where an injection appears has not been systematically characterized. Studying injection placement requires agents to operate over longer-horizon tasks and interact with diverse environmental surfaces. Thus, we build three agentic testbeds spanning tool use, coding, and daily workflow domains with diverse injection surfaces. Holding the injection content fixed, we find that agent susceptibility varies across injection placements. We refer to this phenomenon as the trust region effect: agents implicitly assign different levels of trust to different regions of their environments. For example, an agent powered by GPT-5.4 follows an unsafe injection instruction placed in a repository documentation file (i.e., a README or TODO file) 2.6 times more often on average than the same instruction placed in a code or data file. Building upon this observation, we develop learning-based attackers that generate injection content and select better injection placements. Our approach demonstrates that both where an injection is placed and what content it contains can affect the strength of indirect prompt injection attacks. To the best of our knowledge, this work provides the first systematic characterization for the effectiveness of different injection placements, spanning both coarse-grained environmental surfaces and fine-grained positions. The uneven trust that agents implicitly place across their environments provides important insights for future attack and defense design.

Fully Dynamic Unconstrained Submodular Maximization

Mohammad Hajiaghayi

原文摘要

We study unconstrained maximization of a fixed nonnegative submodular function when the ground set changes by insertions and deletions. A uniformly random subset gives a $1/4$-approximation with constantly many value-oracle queries per update. We obtain improvements over this bound for arbitrary oblivious update sequences, without knowing future deletions. For value estimation, we give a $(\sqrt2-1-\varepsilon)$-approximation using $O_{\varepsilon,δ}(\log^2(N+1))$ expected amortized oracle queries, with failure probability at most $δ$ at each fixed time. Here $N$ bounds the number of active elements. The algorithm maintains Poisson samples of the positive mass of random chain lower bounds. We prove that the factor $\sqrt2-1$ is tight for this certificate, even when polynomially many independent orders are used. For every fixed integer $K\ge2$, we maintain a feasible $(1/4+Ω(K^{-2}))$-approximate set using $\widetilde O_K(N^{1/K})$ amortized queries. Thus every fixed exponent $γ>0$ permits a fixed improvement over $1/4$ with $\widetilde O_γ(N^γ)$ update queries. In the square-root regime, a stronger algorithm attains $ρ_{\rm sq}-\varepsilon$, where $ρ_{\rm sq}>0.3177$. The maintained sets are feasible after every update, and their approximation guarantees hold in expectation. All bounds count oracle queries; the value estimator may query previously seen inactive elements, whereas the set algorithms use only currently active elements.

All-even sets in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $\mathbb{R}^3$

Daniel Kalmanovich, Gabriel Nivasch

原文摘要

Call a finite nonempty point set $S\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ all-even if for every direction $\ell \in \mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^d)$, the number of hyperplanes perpendicular to $\ell$ that intersect $S$ is even. In 2026, Francisco Santos presented a question of Juan Benigno Seoane-Sepúlveda on the existence of all-even sets in dimensions $3$ and higher, together with examples of such sets in dimension $2$. Call a set $S\in\mathbb{R}^d$ line-all-even if for every direction $\ell \in \mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ the number of lines parallel to $\ell$ that intersect $S$ is even. As Santos pointed out, every all-even set in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is line-all-even. We conjecture that there exist no line-all-even sets in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that affinely span $\mathbb{R}^3$ We show that our conjecture is equivalent to the statement that every planar all-even set satisfies a certain property, which we call height-rigidity. This property has a natural interpretation in linear algebra terms. Furthermore, we present a hierarchy of properties of planar point sets that imply height-rigidity. We construct several all-even sets in the plane, including some infinite families, and show that all the sets we constructed are height-rigid. In addition, we prove that every all-even set in the plane that can be covered by six or fewer parallel lines is height-rigid.

Improved LCL Equivalences and Curve Decoding Alphabet Sizes

Rohan Goyal, Venkatesan Guruswami, Yihang Sun, Mary Wootters

原文摘要

Local Coordinate-wise Linear (LCL) properties, introduced by Levi, Mosheiff, and Shagrithaya (2025), capture coding-theoretic properties such as list decoding and list recovery. They showed that every LCL property has the same rate threshold for random linear codes (RLC) and random Reed--Solomon codes (RRS). Brakensiek, Chen, Dhar, and Zhang (2025) extended this to random additive codes. Thus any property of all subspace design codes holds for RLCs and RRS at the same rate. In this work, we improve the probabilistic guarantees in the RRS local equivalence theorem and extend the equivalence to all known subspace design constructions individually. Each such construction, including folded Reed--Solomon codes, has the same LCL threshold as RLC and RRS codes. We apply these results to alphabet-size bounds for curve decoding. Curve decoding, introduced by Goyal and Guruswami (2025) and Carmon et al. (2026), is a row-span-constrained LCL property implying proximity gaps (PG), correlated agreement (CA), and mutual correlated agreement (MCA), relevant to IOPs and SNARKs. Informally, a rate-$R$ code $C \subset \mathbb{F}^n$ is $(\ell,δ,a,b)$-curve decodable if any degree-$\ell$ curve $u:\mathbb{F}\to\mathbb{F}^n$ that is $δ$-close to $C$ on at least $a$ points has at least $b\leq a$ nearby codewords lying on a degree-$\ell$ curve in $C$. Goyal and Guruswami (2025) and Goyal, Guruswami, Sun, and Wootters (2026) established curve decodability for RLC and RRS codes at radius $δ$ approaching $1-R$, but with large alphabets in $\ell$ and $η:=1-R-δ$. Using our improved LCL equivalence and rank-sensitive counting inspired by Goyal and Guruswami (2026), we exponentially improve alphabet requirements while matching the best known values of $(a,b)$. For $\ell=O(1)$, our alphabet-size bounds match the best known for list decoding, and improves results for PG, CA, and MCA.

Fast Perfect $L_2$ Sampling

David P. Woodruff, Samson Zhou

原文摘要

Perfect $L_2$ sampling is a powerful primitive for turnstile data streams, allowing algorithms to extract an index with probability proportional to its squared frequency, with applications to dynamic join size estimation, query optimization, heavy-hitters, sampling from self-joins, and real-time monitoring of evolving datasets. The setting $p=2$ is also the largest $p$ for which $L_p$ sampling can be achieved in polylogarithmic space. However, existing space-optimal perfect samplers rely on explicit polynomial duplication, requiring inefficient polynomial update times per stream arrival. Resolving a open question left by Swartworth, Woodruff, and Zhou [FOCS 2025], we present a perfect $L_2$ sampler that achieves an expected $\text{polylog}(n)$ update time while maintaining an optimal $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(\log^3 n)$ bits of space.

Contextual Embeddings Beyond the Gold Chunk

原文摘要

Contextual embeddings represent chunks of a document with respect to the document's global context. These models are typically trained and evaluated under the assumption that a relevant document contains only a single relevant chunk. In this work, we argue that in real-world use cases a retriever should not only find answers spread over several chunks but also surface the evidence needed to verify them. To address this, we introduce pplx-embed-v2-context, a family of contextual embedding models trained by distilling graded chunk-level relevance from a query-aware context compression model. This removes the need for gold-chunk labels and makes the training targets independent of the chunking. We utilize a vision-language backbone for training and release pplx-embed-v2-context in 9B and 0.6B sizes with compatible embedding spaces. On the evaluation side, we introduce two benchmarks that label both the chunks that answer a query and the evidence needed to verify the answer. Context-bench is a controlled diagnostic, and Q2D-Chunk is built from real-world search queries. To encourage further research, we also publish Q2D-Chunk as a public leaderboard. Our 9B model sets a new state of the art on both benchmarks and ConTEB. We find that the visual retrieval capabilities of our 9B model transfer from its vision-language base model and propose to extend chunking to image inputs. We demonstrate that our models achieve state-of-the-art performance among dense retrievers on visual ViDoRe-V3 and that performance improves with granular image chunking.

Learning to Reason from Reference Samples Alone: Reinforced Adversarial Learning for Modern LLM Post-Training

原文摘要

In many settings where LLM post-training is desirable, high-quality answers are recognizable but difficult to score with explicit rewards. Reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) is limited to tasks where an explicit correctness signal is available. Prior adversarial approaches to training reasoning LLMs either complement verifiable rewards with co-trained critics or require reference reasoning traces. We ask whether a co-trained LLM judge can turn reference answers alone into the sole reward for on-policy post-training of reasoning LLMs. We call this method Reinforced Adversarial Learning (RAL). We first validate RAL on three verifiable tasks (integer multiplication, code-based arithmetic-expression synthesis, and SMILES-to-formula translation), using the verifiers only for evaluation. With sufficiently capable judges and enough training, RAL matches direct RLVR. We then apply RAL to scientific abstract generation in two settings. In the first setting, RAL guides the generator to produce abstracts in the scientific domain of the reference abstracts, even though the prompt leaves that domain unspecified. In the second setting, we generate abstracts for U.S. National Institutes of Health grant proposals conditioned on the grant title. Human scientists and an ensemble of LLM judges find our generations harder to distinguish from real abstracts than those of frontier-LLM baselines. These results suggest a path toward post-training reasoning models in scientific and other high-value domains, where increasingly capable judges infer hard-to-specify reward functions from example answers.

原文摘要

Quantum materials exhibit diverse electronic and functional phenomena, but their characterization requires extensive experimental expertise, iterative decision-making and accumulated laboratory knowledge that is difficult to document and transfer. Here we introduce Quantum Agent (QUANTA), an agentic artificial intelligence (AI) framework for autonomous quantum-materials characterization. Using a widely adopted Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) as an experimental platform, QUANTA combines retrieval augmentation using scientific literature, experimental protocols and prior measurements with specialized agents for experimental planning, troubleshooting, and data interpretation. A separate deterministic control layer validates instrument actions. Guided by incoming data, QUANTA evaluates measurement quality, revises experimental plans and selects subsequent measurements. We demonstrate these capabilities through transport measurements of the topological Weyl semimetal TaP, as well as investigations of nonlinear responses in magnetic material Co2MnGa. These results establish QUANTA as a generalizable framework for evidence-driven, safeguarded and closed-loop quantum-materials characterization.

Differentiable Systematic Resampling for Variational Sequential Monte Carlo

Fredrik Cumlin, Saikat Chatterjee

原文摘要

Particle filters are a standard tool for nonlinear state estimation, but their resampling step is discrete, preventing gradient-based learning in variational sequential Monte Carlo. We introduce Differentiable Systematic Resampling (DSR), a temperature-controlled relaxation of systematic resampling, that preserves the CDF-ordered, banded structure of systematic resampling while enabling full gradient flow. DSR converges to exact systematic resampling as the temperature vanishes, and we prove a pointwise exponential convergence rate for the induced bias. Compared to optimal-transport-based differentiable resampling, DSR avoids iterative solvers and has substantially lower computational overhead. Experiments on stochastic dynamical systems and real-world handwriting data show that DSR achieves comparable or superior filtering and dynamics learning performance.
