Reading Why: Born-Measured Attention with Exact Word Evidence on Light and Qubits

Teerawat Tongloy, Jiraporn Pongsopa, Rangsan Jomtarak

原文摘要

When a language model answers, we can usually only estimate why. We build a transformer in which every step is a Born measurement - attention $|\langle q|k\rangle|^4$ normalised over each row, a measured product in place of the feed-forward nonlinearity, and a Born readout. With its denominators held at their values for the input, each class probability is a polynomial in the word amplitudes, so its integrated-gradient evidence is computed by a finite quadrature with no quadrature error: the words' contributions sum to the class probability above its no-information share, to $10^{-11}$ or better. On e-SNLI natural language inference, with about 98k parameters outside the embedding, the model reaches $76.98 \pm 0.17$% test accuracy, level with a softmax transformer of the same size ($76.62 \pm 0.36$%). Deleting the word its evidence ranks first changes the answer in 45% of test pairs, out of the 53% any single deletion can change, against 32% for the softmax model explained the same way and 40% by its attention x gradient. Attention can look as much like the words annotators highlighted as the evidence does, yet accounts for the answer less well: deleting the word it ranks first changes the Born Transformer's answer in 32% of pairs. The same weights compile exactly to optoelectronic optics and to qubits, and a coherent attention layer becomes one circuit equal to the model (852 CNOTs on 23 qubits). On IBM's ibm_kingston, reading only the attention overlaps by Hadamard tests, the device gave the model's answers, also when a word was deleted. With calibration circuits as deep as the overlaps, each word's evidence with the device's attention row sums followed the exact evidence (correlations 0.997 and 0.932 on two pairs chosen in advance); where a pair's evidence is a small total of large opposite terms the earlier runs say it does not, and we say why.

Coupled Scene Graph Anticipation: When With-Constraint Recall Hides Structural Inconsistency

Zeno Nongmaithem, Anushttha Srivastava, Anshit Sinha, Apoorv Sisodia, Suman Chowdhury, Prerana Mukherjee, Rajesh P. Barnwal

原文摘要

Scene Graph Anticipation (SGA) predicts object relationships in future video frames. Continuous-time SGA models evolve each subject-object pair with an independent Neural ODE, so relationships sharing an entity cannot influence one another during integration, and nothing prevents mutually exclusive predictions, such as "sitting on" and "standing on", for the same pair. We introduce CoupledSGA, which links such relationships through a Relationship Interaction Graph with graph attention inside the ODE vector field, and adds a Structural Consistency Loss ($\mathcal{L}_{SC}$) based on a matrix of mutually exclusive predicates. Developing CoupledSGA revealed a limitation of the evaluation protocol. With-Constraint evaluation keeps one predicate per group for each subject-object pair, so its R@K and mR@K cannot capture the within-group violations targeted by $\mathcal{L}_{SC}$: we prove they are unchanged whenever each group's winning predicate and its score are held fixed. We further show that the gradient of $\mathcal{L}_{SC}$ depends on predicate scores rather than ground-truth labels: for two-predicate rules it amplifies the ordering the model already holds, and when all scores in a group are equal it suppresses predicates in more exclusion rules more strongly, explaining why the penalty can lower recall while improving consistency. On Action Genome, activating $\mathcal{L}_{SC}$ after two warm-up epochs reduces R@20 from 42.21% to 35.18% while lowering the No-Constraint contradiction rate from 45.92% to 4.07% (matched-budget R@20: 40.48% CoupledSGA vs. 44.78% SceneSayerODE). CoupledSGA is a testbed, not a state-of-the-art claim: With-Constraint recall captures the cost of enforcing structural consistency but not the improvement. We recommend reporting No-Constraint results alongside a contradiction rate for methods that constrain predicate co-activation.

Smartphone-Aided VR Exergames for HIIT: Gamifying Fitness with Real-Time Pose Estimation

Abhiram Kothagundu, Pheelip Pritipal Raipure, Abhijit Chandrakant Patil, Himangshu Sarma, Christian Eichhorn, David A. Plecher, Johanna Pirker

原文摘要

This paper introduces an innovative virtual reality (VR) exergame system designed to gamify High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts through 11 predefined combo moves, including squat-punch combinations, bilateral arm strikes, and diagonal stretch combos. Unlike conventional tracking methods that often rely on wearable motion capture suits or limited headset-based sensors, our system uses a standard smartphone camera placed on a tripod to capture full-body movement. This approach offers a cost-effective and scalable alternative, particularly well-suited to the fast, dynamic motions typical of HIIT routines. The smartphone footage is processed in real time using a pose estimation algorithm, with extracted biomechanical data analyzed by a backend server built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), Anthropic's open standard for connecting AI models to structured data sources and tools, and a GPT-4o large language model. The system generates personalized assessments of form accuracy, movement efficiency, exercise intensity, and potential injury risks, tailored specifically to high-impact, time-sensitive exercises. A within-subject study involving 20 participants (ages 18-25) compared experiences in VR and Non-VR HIIT sessions. Results indicated significantly higher enjoyment (Mean = 3.5 vs 2.8, p = 0.02), improved immersion/focus (Mean = 3.2 vs 2.8, p = 0.03), and increased likelihood to recommend (Mean = 3.2 vs 2.7, p = 0.04) under the VR condition. Confidence to continue did not differ significantly between conditions (p = 0.15), while perceived intensity remained comparable. The MCP system showed strong agreement with expert evaluation (87.5%, N = 10 sessions, one certified trainer), supporting its reliability as a feedback tool.

ConceptARC at Scale: Studying Conceptual Understanding in Reasoning Models

原文摘要

Large reasoning models (LRMs) perform well on challenging benchmarks, yet it remains unclear whether they form generalizable abstractions across conceptually related reasoning tasks. The Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus (ARC) provides a controlled testbed for studying abstraction, requiring solvers to infer transformation rules over two-dimensional grids from a small set of examples. While ARC evaluates rule abstraction within individual tasks, different tasks may share higher-level structure despite requiring different transformations$\unicode{x2014}$for example, several tasks may involve reasoning about objects contained within other objects. Benchmarks such as ConceptARC capture this structure by grouping ARC-style tasks into recurring spatial and semantic concepts, but they often contain only a few manually constructed tasks per concept. We introduce ConceptARC at Scale, a generator for creating thousands of ARC-style tasks targeting a specific concept. Using this generator, we construct ConceptARC-100, a dataset of 1,600 new, manually reviewed tasks, with 100 tasks for each of the 16 concepts defined by ConceptARC$\unicode{x2014}$ten times the size of the original benchmark. We evaluate a range of recent LRMs and models trained from scratch on ConceptARC-100 to characterize which concepts they solve reliably and where they struggle. We further analyze the models' internal representations and find clear semantic structure: task representations cluster according to the operations applied to objects, such as recoloring, removal, or translation, even when realized through substantially different rules and scenarios. Together, our results suggest that models form stable abstractions of transformation operations that generalize across diverse tasks.

Template Gap Reconstruction for Shell Output Simulation with Small Language Models

Jarrod Ragsdale, Rajendra Boppana

原文摘要

Small language models offer a compact basis for shell simulation without executing submitted commands, but full-output decoding requires them to predict recurring utility structure alongside content that varies across executions. We introduce template gap reconstruction (TGR), which supplies reusable output literals interspersed with sentinels to be interleaved with autoregressively generated gaps. A template selector chooses which template to be reconstructed, with the empty template retaining full-output decoding. We construct a template bank from 18.7 million outputs collected across heterogeneous execution environments and train a template selector and five reconstruction models initialized from various small language model checkpoints on a target environment excluded from bank construction. Evaluation demonstrates that TGR improves output edit similarity (O-ES) over full-output decoding (FOD) when the optimal template covers more than 25\% of the template, while performing similarly for lower-coverage outputs. Additionally, TGR outperforms FOD for shorter gap sequences, with O-ES values of 0.964 and 0.812, respectively, while maintaining similar performance for longer sequences. TGR reduces the number of tokens generated by 26.3--38.3\% across used tokenizer families. These results support using a reusable output structure as a practical design choice for small shell simulators, improving response fidelity and shortening generation targets while keeping template selection and residual prediction central to response quality.

Predictive Spatio-Temporal Scene Graphs for Semi-Static Scenes

原文摘要

We have seen tremendous recent progress in our ability to build "spatio-semantic" representations that enable robots to perform complex reasoning across geometry and semantics. However, the vast majority of these methods lack any ability to perform reasoning across time. This is a desirable property in situations where a robot repeatedly observes an environment where instances may change in between observations, but in a structured way. Consider as an example a home environment where the location of a mug typically moves from the cupboard to a countertop to the sink and then back to the cupboard on a daily basis. We should be able to learn this cyclic behavior and use it to predict the state of the mug in the future. In this work, we propose a method that is able to perform this type of tempo-spatio-semantic reasoning. Underpinning the method is a filter, Perpetua*, that performs Bayesian reasoning on the states of the environment that are observed over time. This filter is integrated within a 3D scene graph structure that we call PredictiveGraphs, where nodes represent objects and edges function as Perpetua* filters encoding spatio-semantic relationships. We validate the method in both simulation and real-world dynamic navigation tasks, where our real-world experiments consist of an environment that is undergoing semi-static changes at a bi-hourly frequency over a period of three weeks. In both settings, we demonstrate that our method outperforms baselines in predicting future environment states, even in the presence of distributional shifts.

Turns Matter: Advancing Streaming Video RL via Turn-Level Credit

原文摘要

Streaming video understanding requires models to repeatedly decide whether to respond or continue observing. Recently, Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) has been applied to this setting, with existing approaches emphasizing reward design while retaining a single trajectory-level advantage across turns. Such shared credit can reinforce redundant replies after earlier successes and discourage useful follow-ups after earlier failures. We propose TurnWise, a turn-level GRPO framework that aligns learning with individual streaming decisions. TurnWise addresses the mismatch between trajectory-level feedback and turn-level interaction, promoting informative responses and reducing redundancy. Specifically, turn-level credit assignment uses silence-completed prefix scoring to construct group-relative advantages from each decision's remaining return, separating its learning signal from earlier rewards. Turn-mean policy optimization averages token losses within each turn and then across turns, giving response and waiting decisions equal weight regardless of output length. These complementary designs improve streaming policy learning without a learned critic or additional rollouts. Extensive experiments show our method outperforms prior RL approaches for streaming video understanding.

Airlock: Bounding the Multi-Agent Blast Radius via Selective Online Containment

Zhonghao Zhan, Javad Forough, Yefan Zhang, Krinos Li, Xiao Ma, Hamed Haddadi

原文摘要

When multi-agent systems act on the external world, a single agent's faulty output can spread across tasks before detection, creating a system-wide blast radius. Single-agent guardrails are confined to individual harnesses, while existing multi-agent controls either cancel only the faulty source and miss downstream consumers or halt and roll back the entire workflow at the cost of healthy work. We present Airlock, a multi-agent runtime and guardrail for selective post-alert fault containment. Its tree-structured runtime, EdgeCitadel, narrows permissions vertically from parent to child agents to establish node boundaries and control switches. Meanwhile, an append-only provenance DAG records cross-agent data consumption horizontally. Upon an alert, Airlock traces forward on this DAG to isolate tainted executions and pending actions, and backward to narrow root causes. At the site switches, a default full quarantine tier freezes affected branches without a solver, while an assured optimized cut tier uses fence-then-prune to enforce a deadline-aware minimum cut minimizing collateral disruption. Across 1,832 testbed runs, 161 physical smart-home LLM runs, and 24,266 simulation records, Airlock blocks all post-alert faulty actuations on our main testbed and smart-home grids with zero post-convergence leaks. Whereas native controls in A2A and LangGraph either contain at most 33.3% of faults or retain at most 16% of work without redo, Airlock retains +68 pp to +96 pp more healthy work, and its optimized cut retains +46 pp more than full quarantine under dense spread. These results show that co-designing runtime authority boundaries with online provenance enables surgical fault containment without sacrificing healthy work (code: https://github.com/EdgeCitadelTeam/EdgeCitadel).

Dexterous Robotic Hands in the Foundation-Model Era: A Full-Stack Survey of Hardware, Data, Cross-Embodiment Transfer, Learning, and Evaluation

Ji Pei

原文摘要

Dexterous robotic hands are increasingly coupled to large-scale human data and foundation models, yet progress in hardware, representation learning and evaluation is often assessed separately. This survey reviews work from January 2024 to early November 2026, with earlier studies included to establish technical lineages. We organize the literature into five interdependent layers: hardware; data collection and curation; cross-embodiment transfer; learning and foundation models; and evaluation and applications. Human hand-object understanding and tactile sensing provide two cross-cutting perspectives. A system-level architecture, comparative tables and five case analyses connect design choices across these layers. We distinguish within-study experimental comparisons from heterogeneous corpus statistics, vendor specifications and company-reported results. Three conclusions emerge. First, the value of human data depends on kinematic, visual and contact alignment, not recording volume alone. Second, shared action representations and foundation policies do not remove embodiment-specific constraints on force, latency and contact. Third, task completion is insufficient to establish physical correctness or deployment readiness. Evidence remains limited for zero-shot transfer of contact-rich skills between morphologically different hands, long-duration reliability, and cross-sensor tactile generalization. We identify eleven open problems and propose reporting interfaces and controlled comparisons that can make full-stack progress more measurable. The review is a structured narrative synthesis rather than a pooled performance ranking or an exhaustive systematic review.

Symmetry Breaking at the Edge of Stability via Central Flow Analysis

Naima Elosegui Borras, Georgios Arvanitidis

原文摘要

Continuous symmetries in neural networks lead to conserved quantities that are invariant under gradient flow, such as layer balancedness in linear and ReLU networks. Finite-step gradient descent need not preserve these laws, particularly at the edge of stability (EOS), where the iterates oscillate around a smoother trajectory, which can be described by the central flow dynamics (Cohen et al., 2025). We study how gradient flow conservation laws evolve under the central flow description of this regime. We show that the curvature correction induces a finite-dimensional drift determined by the oscillation covariance along critical parameter directions. We thus take the first steps to analyse which conservation laws remain and are broken at the EOS according to the central flow dynamics by analysing a scalar two-layer model, two-layer matrix factorisation, and a two-layer ReLU network, where the known conservation laws are shown to be complete (Marcotte et al., 2023).

原文摘要

Training large text-to-image models requires high-quality, curated datasets with diverse content and detailed captions. Yet the cost and complexity of collecting, filtering, deduplicating, and re-captioning such corpora at scale hinder open and reproducible research in the field. We introduce MONET, an open Apache 2.0 dataset of 103.8M image-text pairs collected from 2.9B raw pairs across heterogeneous open sources through successive stages of safety filtering, domain-based filtering, exact and near-duplicate removal, and re-captioning with multiple vision-language models covering short to long-form descriptions, and further augmented with synthetically generated samples. Each image is shipped with pre-computed embeddings and annotations to accelerate downstream use. To validate the effectiveness of MONET, we train a 4B-parameter latent diffusion model exclusively on it and reach competitive GenEval and DPG scores, demonstrating that our dataset lowers the barrier to large-scale, reproducible text-to-image research.

Reasoning over Non-Parametric Memory in Multilingual LLMs: A Cognitive-Based Analysis of Relational Knowledge

Zohreh Abbasi Liasi, Batoul Hammoud, Anas Madkoor, Ehsaneddin Asgari

原文摘要

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) assumes that language models can reason over relations stated in their context rather than fall back on associations memorized during pretraining. We study this evidence-conditioned relational reasoning in isolation, with the facts supplied directly in the prompt rather than retrieved. \textsc{Rel-Bloom} is a controlled multilingual diagnostic of 450 multiple-choice questions built from 30 Wikidata relations; the same source relations are instantiated at five Bloom-inspired levels (Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate) and under three veracity conditions (Factual, Counterfactual, Neutralized). Across 43 models, six languages, and two multilingual settings (226,800 predictions), three findings stand out. First, accuracy drops sharply from Apply to Analyze in every evaluated open-weight model series, reaching 47.2 percentage points for the Large Granite bucket, but not for either Gemini model. Second, Evaluate items remain a bottleneck even for models near ceiling on the other task types: Gemini~3.1 Pro averages 99.5\% on the other four levels but 60.7\% on Evaluate. Third, item- and relation-level difficulty rankings are consistently preserved across languages, indicating a difficulty structure partly shared across languages within this benchmark. Across knowledge conditions, Counterfactual contexts are generally harder than Factual ones, while removing entity identities can improve higher-level performance in some model regimes. Greater model capability therefore does not by itself ensure reliable reasoning over supplied relational evidence. Energy-Guided Transport for Projection-Free Physics-Informed Flow Matching

Giuliano Galadini, Aurelio Uncini, Danilo Comminiello

原文摘要

Deep generative models, particularly Flow Matching frameworks, have emerged as powerful tools for synthesizing complex physical systems. However, standard architectures remain purely statistically driven and agnostic to the underlying governing equations, often violating fundamental physical constraints during inference. Existing zero-shot approaches designed to enforce these constraints typically rely on rigid algebraic projections. While effective for sparse boundary conditions, applying such discrete geometric corrections to dense, full-domain PDEs may disrupt the probability path, \rev{potentially deviating from the learned manifold and introducing substantial computational overhead}. To address these challenges, we introduce Energy-Guided Transport, a novel training-free framework that formulates non-linear physical constraints as a smooth potential energy landscape. Rather than interrupting the ODE integration, our method applies a continuous dissipative force directly to the intermediate generative states, steering them toward the physical manifold. By evaluating this force implicitly via reverse-mode automatic differentiation, our framework preserves the natural dynamics of the flow while maintaining an efficient $\mathcal{O}(N)$ algorithmic complexity. We extensively evaluate our framework across various 1D and 2D physical systems, including the chaotic Navier-Stokes equations. Our method achieves stable generation without structural divergence, significantly improves the stability-accuracy trade-off compared to state-of-the-art methods, and substantially accelerates inference with respect to exact projection strategies. Where Is VLA Inference Time Spent? Bottlenecks and Optimization Interactions Across GPUs

Muhammad Danish Waseem, Ahmed Ali-Eldin Hassan

原文摘要

Vision-language-action (VLA) models map camera observations and language instructions to robot actions. However, their large backbones and repeated action generation can make inference take longer than the robot's real-time requirements for its next action. To reduce the load of VLA computations, researchers have proposed multiple optimization approaches, including quantization and pruning. These optimizations can be combined with other general optimizations such as better kernel compilation or using CUDA graphs instead of the eager mode. However, most of these optimization results are usually reported on a single GPU type, typically for a few VLA models, with no analysis of what the real bottlenecks are for a model on a particular hardware or how these optimizations would generalize beyond the reported results. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive measurement study of seven families of inference optimization methods, from CUDA graphs and compilation to token pruning and quantization, on seven state-of-the-art VLAs evaluated on four GPU families ranging from a datacenter H100 to an embedded Jetson Thor. We analyse how CPU launch overhead, memory bandwidth, and kernel efficiency jointly shape optimization gains, and how applying one method changes the benefit of another. From this analysis, we derive VLA-Triage, guidelines for stacking optimizations under latency budgets. The guidelines identify which stages can provide the required savings and which combinations need testing in the deployed execution mode.

Beyond the principle-practice gap: Responsible AI as situated epistemic and ethical practice

Thao Do Ngoc, Emma Carmel

原文摘要

Responsible AI scholarship has found that ethical principles are frequently not reflected in AI design and development. Conceptualised as a `gap' between principle and practice, this is framed as a problem of implementation, awareness or compliance, and by implication, a deficit of systems or individual behaviour. This paper sets out an alternative explanation. Drawing on fourteen semi-structured interviews with actors designing and governing AI-enabled anti-trafficking systems across law enforcement, commercial, research, and survivor-support contexts, it argues that such apparent gaps emerge from the varied and complex institutional and professional conditions through which actors come to recognise some issues, but not others, as ethical problems requiring action. We show that epistemic choices are intertwined with ethical judgements, and trace four interconnected moments---perception, judgement, situated action and socio-technical materialisation---through which concerns become intelligible, are weighed and acted upon, and are embedded in technical artefacts and governance arrangements. Actors often hold genuine ethical commitments, but these commitments are shaped by institutional logics and professional moral economies: some concerns are materialised, while others are narrowed, deferred or left unrealised. We show that ethical agency is exercised within and between competing constraints of profession, role, prior experience, and institutional settings. The paper argues that responsible AI governance requires purposeful and well-developed epistemic infrastructures that can cut across these constraints to establish institutional conditions through which the knowledge of affected communities and potential harms becomes receivable and actionable in design.

ALTO: African and Levantine Tech-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence Corpus

Tianwei Zhang, Ivy Njoki Nyagwencha, Zahraa Dirani, Shalini Joshi, Scott A. Hale

原文摘要

Tech-facilitated gender based violence (TFGBV) is a pervasive online harm affecting women and gender minority groups through its many direct and covert forms. Current models and annotated datasets for gendered harm detection are dominated by data from, and models trained in, Global North languages. In collaboration with civil society organizations (CSOs) from Jordan, Francophone West Africa, and Kenya, we developed a community-led approach to crowdsource culturally and linguistically relevant instances of TFGBV in Levantine Arabic, African French, and Swahili. We annotated the crowdsourced data using active learning to develop a small but performant dataset (N=3022) called ALTO to improve TFGBV detection in the three languages. Through benchmarking and fine-tuning experiments, we show that existing harmful content detection models show poor TFGBV recall within ALTO and improve with fine-tuning. We found that models often miss covert harms across all languages, while error rates are markedly higher in Swahili. We report the experimental results and release the annotation taxonomy, dataset, and trained models.

Where It Breaks: Diagnosing Perception, Memory, and Decision Failures of a Vision-Language Agent in Pac-Man

Xinglu Wang, Edward Wang, Yong Zhang, Zhenan Fan

原文摘要

Training an agent to play Pac-Man with only up, down, left and right actions raises a basic question: when performance is poor, what should be improved? Difficulty can arise from reading the screen or from choosing actions over a long sequence. We examine these problems in a Qwen3.5-9B-based agent through separate perception checks and primitive-policy reinforcement-learning studies. In the policy study, which uses textual boards to remove image transcription from the decision interface, completion on eight held-out mazes increased from 0% before this optimization to 80.2% at a selected checkpoint, with three extra lives. The perception checks show that accurate static screenshot reading can coexist with errors during interaction. A separate policy comparison also shows that further optimization can accompany worse action choices. Together, these findings motivate concrete checks for post-training: evaluate perception in use, distinguish training success from full-game validation, and examine decisions and later performance rather than relying on one selected score. The study provides empirical lessons for improving future agent training and evaluation.

When to Ask for Help: Uncertainty-Triggered Aerial Refinement for Off-Road Navigation

Pranay Samineni, Adam Thorpe, John Chubick, Anand Balakrishnan, Christian Ellis, Swarat Chaudhuri, Ufuk Topcu

原文摘要

Heterogeneous air-ground teams can use aerial sensing to address the limited range and viewpoint of ground-vehicle sensors, but deciding when the UGV needs assistance and what information the UAV should collect remains a challenge. This paper presents a planner-conditioned air-ground assistance method that evaluates how uncertain map information affects the UGV's current MPPI rollouts. When navigation remains degraded, we score the same rollouts under resolved map hypotheses, select the map layer with the largest useful improvement, request the corresponding aerial measurement, fuse the returned information, and replan. Unlike approaches driven by fixed support roles, task structure, or uncertainty alone, our method conditions assistance on whether resolving uncertainty improves predicted ground navigation. Across 180 simulation trials on three off-road routes, the method achieves 98.9% goal attainment while reducing mean UAV flight time by 87.7% relative to continuous greedy aerial mapping. Aggregated across the routes, each second of estimated UAV flight time saves 2.94 s of UGV navigation time. Field experiments spanning approximately 2 km of UGV operation demonstrate uncertainty resolution and successful navigation recovery.

Agent-Driven Generative Priors for Pathology Image Synthesis and Segmentation

原文摘要

Deep learning methods for pathology are constrained by the limited availability and high cost of large-scale pixel-level annotations. Synthetic data can alleviate this limitation, but existing pipelines often lack reliable quality control and remain weakly connected to downstream analysis. To address these issues, we propose a three-stage framework that integrates automated data screening, generative representation learning, and efficient adaptation to downstream tasks. First, we develop a pathology agent system to assess image quality and filter samples, resulting in TCGA-200K, a dataset containing 217,030 pathology patches selected from the public TCGA repository. Second, we train a generative model on the screened data. In addition to image synthesis, its backbone learns structural and semantic representations that can be transferred to downstream tasks. Third, we adapt the pretrained generative backbone to semantic segmentation using a lightweight task-specific head. We further introduce PathSeg-380K, a semantic segmentation dataset with expert annotations for approximately 380,000 cells across 12 cell types. Experiments on multiple pathology datasets show that the proposed framework achieves state-of-the-art segmentation performance. PINR-ESI: Physics-Informed Self-Supervised Implicit Neural Representation Framework for EEG Extended-Source Imaging

Zhiyong Zhou, Sheng Liao, Youshen Xiao, Xiaolin Li, Yakang Dai

原文摘要

EEG extended-source imaging aims to localize active cortical regions and characterize their spatial extent, yet supervised inverse networks typically depend on synthetic EEG-source pairs and may be sensitive to synthetic-to-real mismatch. We propose a physics-informed self-supervised implicit neural representation (INR) framework for spatial source reconstruction without paired source labels or simulation-based supervised pretraining. The lead field matrix encodes the source-to-sensor volume-conduction model and constrains the INR through agreement between predicted and measured EEG. Cortical current density is modeled as a continuous coordinate-conditioned field. A classical inverse estimate provides warm initialization and spatial constraints on source activity, while patch-integrated projection maps the field to discrete source coefficients for forward modeling. Simulations with varying noise levels, source counts, and source extents showed the clearest advantage in identifying active cortical regions, particularly for multiple and larger sources. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations using real EEG recordings from epilepsy patients and intracranial stimulation experiments further supported the feasibility of the framework for source imaging. These findings suggest the potential of physics-informed self-supervised INR for extended-source imaging.

原文摘要

Reinforcement learning (RL) has become central to improving large language models (LLMs) on complex reasoning tasks, yet RL post-training is largely studied in isolation from the pretraining that precedes it. As a result, two basic questions remain open: (1) how do pretraining choices (model size, data) shape the returns to RL compute, and (2) what does RL actually do to the model? These questions are difficult to study in the standard LLM setting: pretraining corpora are vast and uncontrolled, making it hard to attribute behaviors to pretraining versus RL, and systematic compute sweeps across both stages are prohibitively expensive. To address these challenges, we use chess as a controlled testbed for studying reasoning across the full pretraining-to-post-training pipeline. We follow the standard LLM training pipeline by pretraining language models from 5M to 1B parameters on human chess games, supervised fine-tuning on synthetic reasoning traces, and running RL on chess puzzles with verifiable rewards. Using this framework, we find that the post-RL performance at given RL compute level is well-predicted from the pretraining loss, and slope of the RL reward curves improves approximately linearly with the pretraining tokens. Beyond scaling, we find that RL does not simply sharpen the SFT policy: on easy puzzles it amplifies correct moves the SFT policy already preferred, while on hard puzzles it surfaces correct moves that were nearly absent under SFT. We further test whether our findings transfer beyond chess by training a 1B language model on math-domain text, where the same predictive pattern emerges: longer-pretrained checkpoints reach higher post-RL performance and improve faster under RL. In sum, we provide a quantitative account of the pretraining-to-RL interface and a controlled testbed for studying the science of reasoning across the full pretraining-to-post-training pipeline.

原文摘要

Restoring archival film remains a fundamentally challenging problem due to the absence of paired training data and the lack of standardized evaluation benchmarks. Pristine versions of deteriorated footage are physically unrecoverable, requiring supervised methods to rely on synthetic data that often fail to capture the complex, temporally coherent nature of real film degradation. At the same time, existing real-world datasets are limited in scale, quality, and accessibility, hindering reliable evaluation and fair comparison across methods. We address both limitations with AbsoluteDegradation, a physics-inspired, modular pipeline for synthesizing realistic film degradations, and a new large-scale archival benchmark. The proposed pipeline models the analog-to-digital process as a structured composition of artifact families, incorporating signal-dependent grain, parametric scratches, and temporally coherent camera motion, enabling controlled generation of diverse degradation regimes. In parallel, we introduce a curated dataset of 81,576 high-resolution frames sourced from real archival footage, designed for consistent evaluation under real-world conditions. Together, these contributions provide a unified framework for training and benchmarking restoration models. Experiments across six restoration architectures, evaluated with no-reference image quality metrics, clip-level temporal quality assessment, and a blinded human preference study (93 raters, 1,395 trials), show that models trained with AbsoluteDegradation generalize better to real-world footage: human raters preferred them in 64.7% of comparisons and for every evaluated architecture. The proposed benchmark also reveals systematic failure modes of current methods and of no-reference metrics. We hope this work establishes a foundation for reproducible and domain-authentic evaluation in archival film restoration.

GaugeQuant: Online Learning of Quantization-Optimal Bases from LLM Symmetries

Miguel P. Bento, João F. Seabra

原文摘要

Transformers are known to have internal continuous symmetries that leave outputs invariant while altering how activations are distributed across coordinates, and hence how well they quantize. GaugeQuant leverages this in-training by introducing a LogSumExp term to the loss that breaks the symmetries, thus selecting a basis that minimizes activation outliers. A stop-gradient operator ensures that only rotation matrices are updated, yielding the language modeling objective completely unaltered. Our quantization strategy requires no specific calibration data, no quantization simulation, and adds a small inference overhead. As a proof of concept, we evaluate on WikiText-2 perplexity and zero-shot reasoning. On Qwen-2.5 0.5B, GaugeQuant reduces perplexity (e.g. $25.62 \to 16.76$ under W4A16) and improves zero-shot accuracy. On LLaMA-2 7B, perplexity improves but downstream accuracy does not. The code is available at: https://github.com/MPedraBento/gauge-quant.

AutoEnergyDesign: An LLM-Driven Agent for Automatic Energy System Design Optimization

Amedeo Buonanno, Salvatore Fabozzi, Maria Valenti

原文摘要

The design optimization of building energy systems represents a complex, high-dimensional search problem involving discrete technology selections, continuous sizing parameters, and intricate economic trade-offs in which every candidate must be evaluated by a year-long simulation. This paper presents AutoEnergyDesign, in which a Large Language Model (LLM) agent reasons over past simulation results, proposes configuration changes and learns in context from each outcome, while a git-based mechanism reverts changes that do not improve the design. The agent couples a reasoning model with explicit memories, a constrained action interface, and an environment-grounded keep/revert feedback signal. The simulator covers eight technologies and computes the 25-year Net Present Cost (NPC). On a case study with measured building loads, the agent, instantiated with three Claude models (Haiku 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5; ten runs of 50 simulations each), is compared with random search, Tree-structured Parzen Estimator (TPE) Bayesian optimization and a (1+1) evolution strategy that shares the agent's acceptance rule (ten seeds of 300 evaluations). With all three models the agent reaches an NPC of 3.53MEUR, 1.20% and 0.23% below the best results of TPE and of the evolution strategy, and comes within 1% of it after a median of 18 to 27.5 simulations; among the baselines, only the evolution strategy does so, after a median of 192 evaluations. Every decision is recorded, making the search auditable.

Cognitive and Behavioural Effects of Haptic Feedback for ROV Teleoperation in Hazardous Environments

Joshua Brown, Ildar Farkhatdinov, Michael Jenkin

原文摘要

Teleoperating a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in complex underwater environments presents unique challenges. Dynamic, three dimensional obstacles and unseen water currents pose real risks to expensive robotic hardware in environments in which recovery can be next to impossible. This paper explores the cognitive effects of haptic feedback to improve vehicle safety in such environments. An in-water study is analysed with a ROV exposed to controlled cross-currents, with environmental information presented via a soft and vibrating haptic touchpad. Results demonstrate that while encountering an unseen cross-current significantly increases an operator's physical and temporal demand, the introduction of haptic feedback mitigates these factors and improves self-assessed performance. Interestingly, the haptic condition also produced the highest levels of mental demand and operator frustration. Despite this increased mental workload, operators drove the ROV significantly faster when receiving haptic cues compared to the current-only condition, indicating a higher level of user confidence. Ultimately, these findings suggest that while haptic feedback may initially require more cognitive processing to interpret unseen hazards, it successfully enhances operator awareness and promotes more confident navigation in hazardous environments.

Don't Replace, Complement: A Detector-Agnostic Subspace Signal for Near-OOD Detection

Wonseok Shin, Songkuk Kim

原文摘要

Post-hoc out-of-distribution (OOD) detection is mature on far-OOD yet remains weak on near-OOD. These two settings differ in their use of class-characteristic feature directions: far-OOD inputs largely fail to activate those of their predicted class, whereas near-OOD inputs activate them much as in-distribution samples do. Because the axis separating far-OOD leaves near-OOD almost indistinguishable from ID, a score optimized for one setting is misaligned with the other; where a detector already saturates far-OOD, added near-OOD sensitivity is bought partly against it. This divergence motivates a targeted near-OOD signal designed to complement existing scores. We propose PLUS (Per-class Low-dimensional sUbspace Signal). For each class, PLUS selects the $m$ most class-active neurons from a sparse autoencoder, orthonormalizes the corresponding decoder directions to form a low-dimensional subspace, and scores an input by its per-class whitened squared Mahalanobis distance $z$ within the subspace of its predicted class. Designed as a dedicated complement rather than a standalone detector, the signal $z$ is fused additively with any calibrated base score at a single, fixed weight. This weight is a single global constant: no value is adjusted per backbone, per OOD dataset, or per deployment, and all calibration statistics are estimated from ID validation data alone. When applied to 18 existing detectors spanning diverse method families, $z$ consistently improves near-OOD AUROC in all 126 detector--backbone combinations. Far-OOD performance is broadly maintained or improved, with only marginal declines where the base score is near-optimal, making $z$ a robust, detector-agnostic complement across backbones.

原文摘要

We introduce LifeVal, a benchmark evaluating AI model performance on personalized agentic consumer tasks. LifeVal covers the most valuable life tasks that a personalized digital superassistant could automate, representing over 1.7 trillion US dollars in annual willingness-to-pay across 148 consumer task categories (e.g., managing finances, moving apartments, searching for a job, finding childcare). To construct our activity distribution, we conducted a new survey of willingness-to-pay for a digital superassistant across a demographically representative sample of over 3,800 consumers, cross-referencing our results against the American Time Use Survey (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2025) and the Multinational Time Use Study (Fisher et al., 2025). For the most valuable consumer activities, we recruited task creators to create AI evaluation tasks personalized using real ChatGPT conversations and memories, reference files, and personal context. Task creators had to pass our expertise threshold (including personally completing the task multiple times and seeing the results through in their real lives for over a year) and also write a rubric, ensuring that our evaluation measured the best personalized completion for that task. All tasks had to pass at least three rounds of human quality-control before acceptance into our final evaluation sets.

Conservative neural posterior estimation via distributionally robust training

William Laplante, Yuga Hikida, Charita Dellaporta, François-Xavier Briol, Ayush Bharti

原文摘要

Simulation-based inference with neural posterior estimation (NPE) often yields overconfident and unreliable posteriors under limited simulation budgets. To address this, we propose DRO-NPE, a distributionally robust approach that replaces the standard NPE objective with a worst-case loss over a Wasserstein ambiguity set. We introduce KL-based metrics for miscoverage and miscalibration, and use these to show that the DRO-NPE objective controls overfitting and reduces posterior overconfidence. Our method is tractable, parallelisable, and readily integrates with standard normalising flows. Across benchmark SBI tasks, DRO-NPE consistently improves coverage and calibration, while narrowing the gap between empirical and population NPE loss, leading to more reliable inference in low-simulation regimes.

Sekai: Incremental Event Memory for Generalized Reasoning Video Segmentation

Zhengtao Liu, Jinrong Xu, Shiu-Hong Kao, Huixin Sun, Yicong Li

原文摘要

Online reasoning video segmentation (Online RVS) requires a model to segment query-referred objects as a video streams in, using only the frames observed so far. Existing formulations largely assume a fixed target set throughout the video, overlooking a fundamental property of streaming reasoning: as new events occur, the objects that satisfy a query may change over time. To address this, we propose a new task, Generalized Reasoning Video Segmentation (GRVS), where the target set depends on query-relevant events accumulated over the observed video history. As new evidence accumulates, the target set can evolve from empty to one or multiple objects, requiring a model to continuously maintain target validity while localizing the valid objects currently in view. To evaluate GRVS, we build Isekai, a diagnostic benchmark of 60 videos and 197 queries across 11 temporal query families, with 12,569 scoring points whose target sets are causally annotated over time. We further propose Sekai, an online framework with two complementary components: an Event Memory Reasoner (EMR) that maintains query-relevant events and evolving target states in structured memory, and a Memory-Grounded Decoder (MGD) that identifies valid targets from this memory and localizes them in the current frame. Experiments show that Sekai significantly outperforms existing online RVS methods, achieving 50.33 J&F and improving over the strongest baseline by 3.2 points. Code, example annotations, and evaluation scripts are available at https://github.com/zenastangbi/Sekai.

原文摘要

Chest computed tomography (CT) is central to the detection and management of thoracic disease, yet the growing scale and complexity of volumetric imaging increasingly exceed what can be addressed by scan-level prediction alone. Clinically useful AI for CT must not only recognize disease across the whole volume, but also localize abnormalities and provide interpretable visual evidence. Existing vision-language foundation models typically compress scans and reports into global image-text representations, limiting their ability to preserve spatial evidence and support clinically meaningful interpretation. Here we developed EXACT, an explainable anomaly-aware foundation model for three-dimensional chest CT that learns spatially resolved representations from paired clinical scans and radiology reports. EXACT was pre-trained on 25,692 CT-reports pairs using anatomy-aware weak supervision, jointly learning organ segmentation and multi-instance anomaly localization without manual voxel-level annotations. The resulting organ-specific anomaly-aware maps assign each voxel a disease-specific anomaly score confined to its corresponding anatomy, jointly encoding lesion extent and organ-level context. In retrospective multinational and multi-center evaluations, EXACT showed broad and consistent improvements across clinically relevant CT tasks, spanning multi-disease diagnosis, zero-shot anomaly localization, downstream adaptation, and visually grounded report generation, outperforming existing three-dimensional medical foundation models. By transforming routine clinical CT scans and free-text reports into explainable voxel-level representations, EXACT establishes a scalable paradigm for trustworthy volumetric medical AI.
