Creating Power Flexibility in Datacenters via Query Routing

Shivam Patel, Bingqing Chen, Jared Fernandez, Guannan Qu, Gauri Joshi

原文摘要

The growing energy requirements of large language model inference highlight the need for datacenters to support safe grid operation by providing power demand flexibility, while maintaining service for interactive workloads. This work investigates query routing as a mechanism to enable such capability by dynamically allocating queries across different language model instances without deferring requests. We develop a general analytical framework that connects query arrival rates and sequence length distributions to token iteration time, request residence time, serving capacity, and power consumption of model instances. Leveraging this framework, we characterize the feasible query routing allocations and the corresponding power demand flexibilities, enabling the selection of routing strategies to achieve desired power consumption behavior. We validate our framework across four GPU platforms on language models ranging from 1B to 70B parameters, obtaining 2.8% mean absolute percentage error in estimating achievable power flexibility. We evaluate our approach on a real trace-driven simulation of a 10,000 H100 GPUs datacenter, exhibiting flexibility up to 16% of total power consumption, with 90% of the desired power reduction achieved within approximately 10 seconds. These results establish query routing as an effective mechanism for datacenter power demand flexibility and demonstrate the broader applicability of our proposed framework to datacenter level planning and orchestration.

GM League Arena: An Interactive Long-Horizon Task Benchmark Based on Professional Sports League Management

Junkai Zhou, Ziming Pan, Zhaoyi Zhang

原文摘要

Long-horizon decision-making under sustained competition requires large language models (LLMs) to balance immediate investment with future resource needs. However, local success in multi-step interactions can not adequately capture cumulative decision effects or demonstrate long-term goal achievement under resource constraints and sustained competition. To address this gap, we introduce GM Bench, a benchmark for managing professional sports teams across seasons under resource constraints and competition among teams. We build the environment simulators for four sports and add financial constraints, player demands, and market mechanisms to establish a unified task across sports. Diverse rosters of comparable strength are constructed from real-world player data, and each LLM is evaluated as a team general manager to assess its long-term management capabilities. We evaluate competitive performance, cash reserves, and cross-season improvement across four sports. Over five NBA seasons, Claude Opus 5.5 ranks first among 29 LLMs, while GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol combine strong performance with larger cash reserves.

Generating Physically Consistent Molecules with Energy-Based Models

Christoph Griesbacher, Lea Bogensperger, Andreas Habring, Thomas Pock

原文摘要

Molecules in equilibrium follow a Boltzmann distribution, making the underlying energy landscape a physically grounded modeling objective. However, such landscapes are difficult to learn from data and, once learned, hard to sample from. Diffusion and flow-matching models sidestep these difficulties by learning a time-conditional score or transport field between noise and data, losing the energy inductive bias in exchange for a more tractable training objective. We introduce EBMol, an energy-based model (EBM) that restores this inductive bias by learning an atom-additive scalar potential without explicit simulation during training. Our method employs a flow-inspired Restoring Field Matching objective to approximate the energy landscape. We adopt the Mirror-Langevin algorithm for sampling, enabling unified updates of atomic positions and types, and incorporate parallel tempering for inference-time compute scaling. EBMol is the first EBM for 3D molecular generation to achieve state-of-the-art performance on QM9 and GEOM-Drugs. Moreover, we show that the learned energy landscape serves as a principled quality metric for ranking and filtering configurations, and demonstrate controllable generation without retraining through shape-steered sampling via potential composition and zero-shot linker design.

When Cell Crops Share a Parent: Measuring and Isolating Acquisition Leakage in Cervical Cytology Benchmarks

Snehasish Ghosh, Soham Mitra, Antareep Majumdar, KC Santosh, Nibaran Das

原文摘要

Public cervical cytology benchmarks release many cell crops cut from far fewer microscope fields or slides and are often split at the crop level, so test cells share acquisition parents with training cells. In a preregistered study, crop-level splitting raised SIPaKMeD accuracy by 0.97 percentage points across twelve architectures and twenty seeds (95% CI 0.59-1.39), and CRIC accuracy by 12.08 points (11.16-12.99). On SIPaKMeD, a factorial that fixes training crop and parent counts attributes the gain to sibling exposure (1.73 points, 0.95-2.51), not to the extra parent diversity of crop-level splits (0.00). Parent identity is decodable at about 100 times chance, yet erasing 82% of its above-floor linear recoverability left the gap unchanged, and Grad-CAM did not distinguish leaking from clean models; matching test cells' color statistics to an unseen same-class field removed most of the advantage. Decodability and saliency cannot substitute for a parent-disjoint split.

Imprompt: A Language Framework for Prompt Programming

Chentian Wu, Shengyuan Yang, Adithya Murali

原文摘要

With the unprecedented success of Language Models (LMs), the science of Prompt Engineering has evolved the powerful idea of Prompt Programming, where prompts are treated as a programmable control surface for describing complex tasks and leveraging LM capabilities. However, existing prompt programming frameworks suffer from various complexities and inelegances, which make them hard to utilize in practice for effectively describing tasks. We propose Imprompt, a new language framework for the study and practice of prompt programming. We undertake a foundational investigation of prompt programming, and contend that prompt programs must contain only the task descriptions and must be decoupled from lower-level 'execution' details. We further develop this position by illustrating structured prompting as a combination of prompt programming and prompt program 'compilation'. We exemplify this view by formally defining two compilers for Imprompt programs. We then explore the idea of typing for prompt programs and draw a correspondence between type checking and constrained decoding. Finally, we implement our compilers and type checkers and evaluate them on a variety of case studies. We believe our work contributes programming-language foundations toward the emerging area of prompt programming.

Explainable Diabetic Retinopathy Classification Using Vision Foundation Models

Abhishek Verma, Anila Krishna, Abhishek Gajanan Bankar, Juan Miguel Lopez Alcaraz

原文摘要

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of preventable blindness, and automated screening must be both accurate and trustworthy. We study an explainable DR classification framework built on vision foundation models and three transfer learning strategies. Three backbones, DINOv2, CLIP, and Vision Transformer (ViT), were adapted by full fine-tuning, linear probing, and Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA). Models were trained and internally evaluated on the ODIR dataset and externally evaluated on APTOS to assess generalization. DINOv2-LoRA achieved the highest internal AUROC (0.758), whereas DINOv2 and ViT full fine-tuning achieved the highest external AUROC (0.920). Probability calibration was assessed with reliability analysis after isotonic regression. For explainability, Grad-CAM and HiResCAM maps were compared with expert-annotated lesion masks from the IDRiD dataset using Dice, Intersection over Union (IoU), and Pointing Game metrics. The results show that foundation models, particularly DINOv2, provide strong predictive performance, and that LoRA is a parameter-efficient alternative to full fine-tuning. Spatial overlap between explanation maps and annotated lesions was limited (mean Dice of about 0.13 for the combined lesion mask), which highlights the value of quantitatively testing whether model attention corresponds to clinically relevant retinal lesions.

Payoff scaling shapes cooperation in LLM agents across languages

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed as autonomous agents that negotiate, coordinate, and make decisions on behalf of human users. Understanding how they cooperate is therefore important for AI governance and machine behaviour research. We examine two factors: payoff magnitude and interaction language. Classical game theory predicts that multiplying all payoffs by a positive constant should not change behaviour because the underlying strategic incentives remain unchanged. We test this prediction using five widely adopted commercial LLMs playing an iterated prisoner's dilemma across ten payoff scales and five languages (English, French, Vietnamese, Chinese and Arabic). Contrary to theoretical expectations, changing only the numerical scale of payoffs substantially alters cooperation. Models respond differently, often in opposite directions, meaning that averages across models can conceal important behavioural heterogeneity. Sensitivity to payoff scale also depends strongly on prompt language. Moreover, payoff scale modifies the effects of persona instructions: at sub-unit stakes, where no payoff shown exceeds 1, all five models cooperate more under a selfish than a cooperative persona, whereas Claude and Gemini reverse this pattern at larger scales. These findings show that cooperation measures depend critically on payoff scale and language and should not be treated as fixed model traits.

Beyond Foundation Models: PFN Priors Improve Tabular Hyperparameter Optimization

Artem Chistyakov, Renat Sergazinov, Artem Babenko

原文摘要

Synthetic priors have so far served one purpose: pretraining tabular foundation models. We ask whether the same priors can improve conventional tabular models, which are trained from scratch on each dataset. We propose PriorTune, a method that meta-tunes hyperparameter configurations on synthetic tasks alone. Offline, for a given model, we fit a pool of configurations on datasets sampled from a published PFN prior and greedily select the subset with the highest winrate over the random baseline. Online, a new dataset fits only the selected configurations, so the gain comes at no extra cost. Empirically, we observe that scaling both the number of configurations and synthetic datasets has an equal scaling effect on the performance of the final subset of configurations, which we also explain theoretically. On the full BeyondArena benchmark, LightGBM with TabPrep features with our configurations ranks above TabPFN-3 and RealMLP, while being much more efficient at inference. Overall, our results establish existing PFN priors as a scalable source of meta-training data for hyperparameter selection for non-foundational tabular models.

UQ-SHRED: uncertainty quantification of shallow recurrent decoder networks for sparse sensing via engression

Mars Liyao Gao, Yuxuan Bao, Amy S. Rude, Xingyue Zhang, Xinwei Shen, J. Nathan Kutz

原文摘要

Reconstructing high-dimensional spatiotemporal fields from sparse sensor measurements is critical in a wide range of scientific applications. The SHallow REcurrent Decoder (SHRED) architecture is a recent state-of-the-art architecture that reconstructs high-quality spatial domain from hyper-sparse sensor measurement streams. An important limitation of SHRED is that in complex, data-scarce, high-frequency, or stochastic systems, portions of the spatiotemporal field must be modeled with valid uncertainty estimation. We introduce UQ-SHRED, a distributional learning framework for sparse sensing problems that provides uncertainty quantification through a neural network-based distributional regression called engression. UQ-SHRED models the uncertainty by learning the predictive distribution of the spatial state conditioned on the sensor history. By injecting stochastic noise into sensor inputs and training with an energy score loss, UQ-SHRED produces predictive distributions with minimal computational overhead, requiring only noise injection at the input and resampling through a single architecture without retraining or additional network structures. On complicated synthetic and real-life datasets including turbulent flow, atmospheric dynamics, neuroscience and astrophysics, UQ-SHRED provides a distributional approximation with well-calibrated confidence intervals. We further conduct ablation studies to understand how each model setting affects the quality of the UQ-SHRED performance, and its validity on uncertainty quantification over a set of different experimental setups.

Meta$^2$: Precomputing Reusable Knowledge for Online Harness Evolution in Long-Horizon Agents

Lingzhi Yuan, Yiguang Cai, Weize Liu, Siqi Yang, Feijiang Han, Yongkyun Lee, Udari Madhushani Sehwag, Furong Huang

原文摘要

Harness optimization improves long-horizon agents by refining the prompts, tools, memory, and hooks around a frozen model. Offline methods can learn from completed trajectories, but deploy one shared harness that may overfit training tasks and cannot react to evidence revealed during a new run. Online evolution can adapt before, during, or after one run through an evolver, but may have to reason about every intervention from scratch or rely on verifier feedback that is usually unavailable at test time. We introduce Meta$^2$, which moves offline optimization one level up: rather than optimizing a shared harness, it learns reusable knowledge for harness evolution and applies it within each task online. Offline, Meta$^2$ learns a textual Meta-Skill $M$ by contrasting training rollouts of the same task agent under three configurations: without an evolver, with an evolver guided by the current version of $M$, and with an evolver given privileged verifier information available only in training. Contrasts in trajectories and outcomes are aggregated across tasks to refine $M$ into reusable guidance on when and how to evolve, when to leave the harness unchanged, and which interventions to avoid. Online, an evolver combines the frozen $M$ with emerging trajectory evidence to decide whether to KEEP the harness unchanged or EVOLVE it through a task-local edit. Each edit applies to the rest of the same run without resetting its environment or progress. Thus, evolution guidance transfers across tasks while harness edits remain task-local, and held-out verifier feedback is never available to the evolver. On two long-horizon benchmarks, Terminal-Bench 2.1 and DeepSWE 1.1, Meta$^2$ achieves the highest performance among evaluated methods with GPT-5.6-Terra, reaching 81.00% and 44.44%, respectively. Ablations support the value of contrastive evolution guidance and keeping online harness edits task-local.

A Random Matrix Analysis of Symmetric Tensor Unfolding

Tom Szwagier, Xiaoyi Mai, José Henrique de Morais Goulart

原文摘要

We study a fundamental problem in machine learning: partial recovery of a planted signal $\boldsymbol{v} \in \mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ from a spiked tensor $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{X}} = λ\, \boldsymbol{v}^{\otimes p} + \boldsymbol{\mathsf{Z}}$, where $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{Z}}$ has symmetric Gaussian entries of variance $\asymp n^{-1}$. While previous works replace $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{Z}}$ by an i.i.d. standard Gaussian tensor to circumvent technical difficulties caused by dependencies, this paper directly analyzes the symmetric model via random matrix theory. We show that the square unfolding algorithm is subject to a sharp phase transition for partial recovery at $λ\asymp n^{(p-2) / 4}$, validating an open conjecture from Montanari and Richard (2014). We get precise expressions for the limiting spectral distribution, deterministic equivalent, phase transition threshold and overlap. The main message is that unfolded symmetric tensors spectrally behave like standard Wigner matrices, up to simple transformations accounting for high-order symmetries. We consider extensions to multiple orthogonal spikes, recursive unfolding and non-square unfolding via disproportionate random matrix theory, leading to an interesting conjectured statistical-computational tradeoff regarding the choice of unfolding: square versus long.

From Opinions to Commitments: Unstable Assignments and Silent Choices in AI-Mediated Proposals

Sachit Mahajan, Javier Argota S{á}nchez-Vaquerizo, Arthur Capozzi, Dirk Helbing

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being used to turn citizens' opinions into collective proposals. These proposals can make assignments: who should act, what must be done, how much one should spend and by when. However, if the assignments change when the same opinions are processed again, publishing a single proposal can hide alternatives that participants never get to see. We examined this issue in four LLM mediators (three open-weight and one commercial) using opinions from DeliberationBank and Polis. For each task, a mediator drafted a proposal from thirty opinions five times, varying either the random seed or the order of the opinions. In 17% of five-run sets from the open-weight mediators and 20% from the commercial one, some runs contained assignments while others did not. Reordering the opinions changed the assignments almost as often as replacing them with opinions from different citizens. Three human annotators confirmed that the detected differences between runs were real, although the LLM judge overstated how often they occurred. Substantial variation remained under four safeguards: temperature zero, a commercial mediator, draft selection, and draft merging. The mediator's objective also shaped representation: prompts seeking agreement covered minority positions much less often than prompts asking to describe differences. A single proposal can therefore obscure choices in both the assignments it proposes and the views it excludes. We propose audits that make alternative assignments visible and disclose the objective behind each proposal.

Solving the Nonlinear Westervelt Equation in Ultrasound Propagation Using Physics-Informed Neural Networks

Luke Oluwaseye Joel

原文摘要

Modeling the nonlinear acoustic wave propagation in biological tissues needs accuracy, especially in ultrasound imaging and therapeutic applications. The 1D Westervelt equation, \( p_{xx} - p_{tt} + γ\, p_{ttt} + η\,(p^{2})_{tt}=0, \) could be used to describe a finite-amplitude ultrasound propagation in these tissues. This equation accounts for nonlinearity, \(η\), and attenuation, \(γ\). To solve this equation, we observe that traditional solvers may struggle to do so correctly. This is due to the difficulties arising from the nonlinear nature of the equation. We solve the equation by defining three synthetic cases - linear (\(η=0.001\), \(γ=10^{-6}\)), shock-dominated (\(η=0.02\), \(γ=10^{-6}\)), and dissipation-dominated (\(η=0.01\), \(γ=5\times10^{-4}\)) - and using Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to showcase the solution. A sinusoidal activation function is used to capture the oscillatory behavior of the problem. The results of our study, with PDE residual converging to at least \(10^{-6}\), boundary condition loss to \(10^{-5}\), and the PINN loss converging to \(10^{-5}\) for each case at \(30,000\) epochs, show that \(γ\) scales the rate of amplitude decay, while \(η\) governs frequency-dependent phase speeds.

WayTrace: A Map-to-Language-to-Trace Hierarchy for Embodied Urban Navigation

Manthan Patel, Jonas Frey, Pascal Roth, Marco Hutter, Cesar Cadena

原文摘要

Web services provide walking directions for nearly every city, but following them reliably over long routes remains challenging for autonomous robots. Point-goal navigation policies rely heavily on accurate GNSS, while most vision-language navigation models struggle to execute even short instructions outdoors. We present WayTrace, a hierarchical system that connects web-map directions to robot motion through language. An off-the-shelf orchestrator vision-language model reads the turn-by-turn directions, a satellite map and recent camera images, and issues one atomic language command at a time, such as "cross the road to the left". An onboard trace predictor, trained on over one million automatically labelled samples from street-level images, draws the path for this command in the image, and a reinforcement learning policy tracks it. In long-range simulated missions, WayTrace remains robust to GNSS noise and rarely leaves crosswalks or sidewalks, while point-goal baselines degrade sharply with about ten times more violations. Deployed on a wheeled-legged robot, WayTrace completes real-world missions of up to 1.37 km at about 1.1 m/s through a busy city centre, rural trails and a university campus, handling crosswalks, staircases and construction sites. Do Ray-Traced Cities Make a Better Channel Prior for an Unseen Site? A Pre-Registered Study in Simulation, and a Test on Measured Channels that Reverses It

Krish Patel

原文摘要

Channel estimators at a newly deployed base station usually start from 3GPP stochastic channel models, which describe no particular street. We ask whether a channel prior pooled from many ray-traced cities serves an unseen site better than the 3GPP CDL models, and whether learned estimators make the difference. With Sionna RT on 14 city scenes, LMMSE estimation from covariance priors, leave-one-city-out evaluation, and pass/fail bars written down before each main experiment, we find in simulation that the pooled prior sits about 0.6 dB from a site-trained estimator with no site measurements, about what CDL reaches after 50 measurements. Learned models added little: at most 0.65 dB in estimation, and in channel prediction a simple classical method beat CNN predictors by 1.8-12 dB from 2 ms ahead. On measured channels from the DICHASUS outdoor dataset (1.272 GHz, three 2x8 arrays on one building) the result reversed: the pooled ray-traced prior was 3.2-4.1 dB worse than CDL. The simulated channels were too clean; with users at the real distances, even a scattering level tuned from 50 site measurements left the prior about 2 dB behind CDL. A pre-registered follow-on on two more measured environments found the generic CDL prior 2.1-4.7 dB from a site-trained one: no further in a factory hall than on the street, furthest in a small lab room. Finally, a hallway model calibrated to measurements by differentiable ray tracing reproduced delay spread, but as a prior in an unmeasured part of the hallway it was 4.5 dB worse than CDL on the full array. All measured results come from one sounder.

Diffusion-DRF: Free, Rich, and Differentiable Reward for Video Diffusion Fine-Tuning

Yifan Wang, Yanyu Li, Gordon Guocheng Qian, Sergey Tulyakov, Yun Fu, Anil Kag

原文摘要

Video diffusion alignment has been heavily relied on scalar rewards. These rewards are typically derived from learned reward models in human preference datasets, requiring additional training and extensive collection. Moreover, scalar rewards provide coarse, global supervision, offering limited prompt-generation mismatch credit assignment and making models prone to reward exploitation and unstable optimization. We propose Diffusion-DRF, a free, rich, and differentiable reward framework for video diffusion fine-tuning. Diffusion-DRF employs a frozen, off-the-shelf Vision-Language Model (VLM) as the critic, eliminating the need for reward model training. Instead of relying on a single scalar reward, it decomposes each user prompt into multi-dimensional questions with freeform dense VQA explanation queries, yielding information-rich feedback. By direct differentiable optimization over this rich feedback, Diffusion-DRF achieves stable reward-based tuning without preference datasets collection. Diffusion-DRF achieves significant gains both quantitatively and qualitatively, outperforming state-of-the-art Flow-GRPO by 4.74% in overall performance on unseen VBench-2.0.

The Right Source Is Not Enough: Understanding History Interference in Speech-LLM Memory

原文摘要

Speech large language models retain audio history to support multi-turn conversations. Yet remembering an event does not ensure that its information is used only when relevant. We investigate why irrelevant historical audio changes answers even when the queried event remains represented. Controlled experiments on MOSS-Audio and MiMo-Audio show that historical values direct errors toward specific competing answers, beyond a generic effect of context length. Causal interventions distinguish two paths. In open-ended question answering, most history-value errors disappear when subsequent computation cannot directly access the irrelevant source. In multiple-choice answering, many errors persist: early historical influence is carried by question-candidate states even after direct source access is blocked. Low-dimensional interventions further separate source-role information from answer-value information. Their effects peak at different depths, and changing the source-role signal does not eliminate the causal influence of competing values. On naturally occurring errors, strengthening the queried role and counteracting the historical value each improve answers; their joint intervention gives the greatest recovery. These findings support a failure of downstream evidence use beyond source identification alone: source-role information can influence a decision without exclusively controlling which historical values affect it. Reliable conversational memory therefore requires not only retention and retrieval, but also control over how retained information enters answer computation.

MathlibPR: Pull Request Merge-Outcome Benchmark for Formal Mathematical Libraries

Zixuan Xie, Xinyu Liu, Shangtong Zhang

原文摘要

The ecosystem of Lean and Mathlib has become the de facto standard for large language model (LLM) assisted formal reasoning with remarkable successes in recent years. Those successes, however, only consume Mathlib as an essential dependency but do not directly contribute to it. In the meantime, the growth of Mathlib has recently been bottlenecked by the review process, which requires human reviewers to judge whether proposed pull requests (PRs) follow the Mathlib's conventions and are worth integrating as part of a shared mathematical infrastructure. This leads to our central question: can LLMs help review Mathlib PRs? To this end, we introduce MathlibPR, a benchmark built from real Mathlib4 PR histories. We further propose a staged evaluation protocol and use it to evaluate both LLM models (e.g., DeepSeek, Qwen, Goedel, and Kimina) and LLM agents (e.g., Codex and Claude Code). Surprisingly, both LLM models and LLM agents struggle to distinguish merge-ready PRs from build-passing PRs that were revised or never merged. By turning Mathlib PR histories into a supervised signal, MathlibPR provides a step toward reviewer assistants and reward models that could help evaluate PRs and steer LLMs toward producing merge-ready Mathlib contributions.

Backpropagation-Free Test-Time Adaptation via Probabilistic Gaussian Alignment

Youjia Zhang, Youngeun Kim, Young-Geun Choi, Hongyeob Kim, Huiling Liu, Sungeun Hong

原文摘要

Test-time adaptation (TTA) enhances the zero-shot robustness under distribution shifts by leveraging unlabeled test data during inference. Despite notable advances, several challenges still limit its broader applicability. First, most methods rely on backpropagation or iterative optimization, which limits scalability and hinders real-time deployment. Second, they lack explicit modeling of class-conditional feature distributions. This modeling is crucial for producing reliable decision boundaries and calibrated predictions, but it remains underexplored due to the lack of both source data and supervision at test time. In this paper, we propose ADAPT, an Advanced Distribution-Aware and backPropagation-free Test-time adaptation method. We reframe TTA as a Gaussian probabilistic inference task by modeling class-conditional likelihoods using gradually updated class means and a shared covariance matrix. This enables closed-form, training-free inference. To correct potential likelihood bias, we introduce lightweight regularization guided by CLIP priors and a historical knowledge bank. ADAPT requires no source data, no gradient updates, and no full access to target data, supporting both online and transductive settings. Extensive experiments across diverse benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance under a wide range of distribution shifts with superior scalability and robustness.

Towards an Optimal Control Foundation of Early Exits - Turnpikes and ResNets

Jens Püttschneider, Simon Heilig, Asja Fischer, Timm Faulwasser

原文摘要

The feed-forward propagation through neural networks is crucial for training and inference. To trade off efficiency and accuracy, it has been proposed to consider intermediate outputs of hidden states as data-dependent regularization during training and, ultimately, as early-exits during inference. In this work, we analyze the joint optimization of loss functions computed for the output layer and intermediate layers using optimal control theory. We prove that ResNets trained in this joint fashion exhibit the so-called turnpike phenomenon, this implies that the number of layers required to reach a prescribed loss level is bounded from above independently of the overall network depth. This induces a similarity property across the internal representations of early-exiting networks of varying depths. We connect the turnpike to the overthinking phenomenon, and provide theoretical insights into the success of early-exit criteria derived from softmax probabilities, specifically entropy and max-probability. In a range of experiments, we demonstrate the existence and effect of turnpikes and the resulting similarity in the early-exit performance for ResNets of varying depths.

DexHOT: Learning Hand-Object Configuration Transfer for Dexterous Manipulation

Zhewei Gui, Anthony Bolton, Jiyao Zhang, Zeyuan Chen, Qiyang Yan, Tianyu Wang, Hao Dong

原文摘要

Dexterous manipulation involves not only moving objects, but also arranging the hand around them to maintain useful contacts and enable subsequent actions. Yet many learning-based systems specify goals primarily through object poses or trajectories, leaving hand-object configurations to emerge implicitly. We introduce DexHOT, which formulates dexterous manipulation as hand-object configuration transfer: moving between feasible configurations that jointly specify hand articulation and object pose relative to the wrist. DexHOT learns a reusable relation-conditioned transfer primitive from synthetic feasible configuration pairs, without human reference motions, and composes long-horizon behaviors through closed-loop tracking of configuration subgoals. On DexHOTBench with 120 objects, a single policy achieves 80.5% transfer success on seen objects and 69.4% on unseen objects; on a real dexterous hand, it achieves 61.5% success over 200 real-robot transfers and 90% task success across six demonstration-guided tasks. These results show that explicit hand-object goals provide an expressive and composable interface for dexterous manipulation. More details and videos are available at https://dex-hot.github.io/.

The Smallest Singular Directions of the Unembedding Matter Disproportionately for Next-Token Prediction

Weilun Xu

原文摘要

Interpreting, editing and compressing language models often involve assessing which parts of their internal representations matter for prediction. Many of these assessments rely on distance, such as reconstruction error or the length of an intervention. For next-token prediction, however, the logit differences that matter most are those among the few most plausible tokens. These differences can be small. We therefore test whether changes to the final hidden state that move the logits less also change the prediction less. Specifically, changes along the smallest singular directions of the unembedding, which maps this state to the logits, move the logits less than random changes of the same length. In open-weight language models across several families, their prediction change and their change in the next-token loss are nevertheless on average several times those of random changes. Across all singular directions, the prediction change is out of proportion to the logit change only at the smallest. These directions carry a large share of the difference between the model's leading candidate tokens. Consequently, distance-based methods undervalue these directions, and rankings by singular value place them last, although they matter disproportionately for prediction. More broadly, our study highlights that comparing internal representations by distance can miss differences that change what the model predicts.

原文摘要

Optimization modeling translates real decision-making problems into mathematical optimization models and solver-executable implementations. Although language models are increasingly used to generate optimization formulations and solver code, existing benchmarks for this capability are almost entirely text-only. This omits many optimization-modeling tasks that arise in operational practice, where requirements are described in text but essential instance information is often conveyed through visual artifacts such as tables, graphs, maps, schedules, and planning dashboards. We introduce multimodal optimization modeling, a benchmark setting where models must construct both a mathematical formulation and executable solver code from a text-and-visual problem specification. To evaluate this setting, we develop a solver-grounded framework that generates structured optimization instances, verifies each instance with an exact solver, and builds both model-facing inputs and hidden reference files from the same verified source. We instantiate it as MM-OptBench, a benchmark of 780 solver-verified instances spanning 6 optimization families, 26 subcategories, and 3 structural difficulty levels. We evaluate 9 multimodal large language models (MLLMs), including 6 frontier general-purpose and 3 math-specialized models, with aggregate, family-level, difficulty-level, and failure-mode analyses. The task remains far from solved: the best two models reach 52.1% and 51.3% pass@1, while on average across the six general-purpose MLLMs, pass@1 is 43.4% on easy and 15.9% on hard instances. All three math-specialized MLLMs solve 0/780 instances. Post-hoc extraction diagnostics and oracle-reading evaluation reveal difficulties in both multimodal grounding and downstream solver-artifact generation. MM-OptBench provides a concrete testbed for solver-grounded, decision-oriented multimodal intelligence.

Distributed Linear Bandits for Freshness-Aware Preprocessing in MEC-Enabled Digital Twin Networks

Mariam Yahya, Setareh Maghsudi

原文摘要

Digital twins (DTs) require timely updates from Internet of Things (IoT) devices to accurately represent the state of the corresponding physical systems, but transmitting large data volumes can compromise freshness. Moreover, different task classes have distinct computational demands and freshness requirements, while stochastic task generation and sizes complicate resource allocation. In this paper, we propose a freshness-aware framework in which multi-access edge computing (MEC) servers preprocess IoT data, reducing transmission volume and DT-server processing load. The framework establishes mutual support between DT and MEC servers. The DTs determine feasible CPU-allocation strategies guaranteeing class-specific age-of-information (AoI) requirements under specified workload, delay, and update-generation bounds. MEC servers collaboratively identify the feasible strategy minimizing expected freshness-normalized preprocessing delay. We formulate CPU-strategy selection as a fixed-confidence distributed best-arm identification problem in linear bandits, with MEC servers as agents and CPU allocations across task classes as arms. We employ DistLinGapE, a distributed collaborative learning method, to coordinate exploration and share observations. Numerical results show that the method identifies the optimal feasible strategy and reduces preprocessing delay when deployed under stationary task-class assignments and workload statistics. Collaboration yields an identification speedup nearly proportional to the number of participating MEC servers in the evaluated settings.

Beyond Multi-Index Models: Learning Intersections of Degree-2 PTFs

Ilias Diakonikolas, Daniel M. Kane, Mingchen Ma, Lisheng Ren, Trung Tran

原文摘要

We give an algorithm for PAC learning intersections of $k$ degree-2 polynomial threshold functions over $R^d$ under a Gaussian distribution. Our algorithm achieves classification error $ε$ using $d^{O(k)}2^{O_k(\log^3(1/ε))}$ time and samples, improving over the $d^{O(k^2/ε^2)}$ running time of the polynomial regression approach. To our knowledge, our result is the first to obtain a dimension exponent independent of the accuracy parameter, even for $k=2$. We complement our algorithmic result with an SQ lower bound showing that the complexity dependence of $d^{Ω(k)}$ is unavoidable. Lifting the input to polynomial features turns the target into an intersection of $k$ halfspaces. This suggests using the first two labeled moments for subspace recovery. In the lifted space, however, these moments can reveal nothing. Our starting point is a Gaussian comparison theorem showing that, for sufficiently regular defining quadratics, the labeled moments needed for subspace recovery are approximately preserved. To handle arbitrary defining quadratics, we establish a new structural result showing that every direction with significant resampling influence can be detected through degree-$O(k)$ moments. These results yield an initial $d^{O(k)}2^{\mathrm{poly}_k(1/ε)}$-time learner using adaptive restrictions. To improve the exponential dependence on $1/ε$, we develop a two-stage dimension-reduction approach that avoids the costly adaptive partitioning. After identifying a subspace containing all directions with large influence, we use generalized regularity and Gaussian comparison to recover the remaining relevant quadratic features through a new derivative-based moment operator. The recovered features support an intersection close to the target. Combining them with robust hinge-loss minimization gives our quasipolynomial-time learner.

SNAP: Semantic Navigation Among Pedestrians

Jakob Wolfram, Pascal Roth, Fan Yang, Cesar Cadena, Marco Hutter

原文摘要

Navigating crowded urban environments requires robots to avoid pedestrians while adhering to social norms such as remaining on sidewalks. Existing approaches typically address either crowd avoidance or semantic path planning in isolation. We propose a reinforcement learning (RL) navigation policy that jointly reasons about semantic terrain and dynamic obstacles from a single semantically annotated bird's-eye-view (BEV) map, without relying on explicit human-state estimation. Our policy outperforms established crowd-navigation and semantic-aware baselines and transfers zero-shot to a legged robot, demonstrating socially compliant navigation in highly dynamic real-world scenarios.

HLO-AMP: Hierarchical Loco-Manipulation from Object-Aware Motion Priors

原文摘要

Hierarchical pipelines for humanoid loco-manipulation typically pair a task-agnostic whole-body controller (WBC) with a downstream task policy. Such WBCs are often trained through manual reward shaping, which yields visibly machine-like motions; more consequentially, they are trained without the manipulated object in the scene. Object dynamics are instead approximated through randomized end-effector force disturbances, a proxy that fails to reproduce the distributed multi-contact wrench a real payload applies across the arms and torso, with the gap becoming critical near the platform's payload limit. In this work, we train the low-level (LL) controller itself as an object-aware motion prior: a single policy trained via motion imitation on retargeted motion-capture (MoCap) references that span the core motion primitives of the downstream task, with the manipulated object physically present in the scene. This single stage inherits natural human-like coordination from the references and absorbs the realistic contact wrench at its source, while exposing the same compact task-space command interface used by command-tracking WBCs. A reference-free high-level (HL) policy is then trained on top, with its action channel anchored to the empirical envelope of the low-level training data so that it generalizes the priors to a long-horizon multi-stage task while structurally preventing queries that would push the low level off-distribution. We instantiate the framework on a Unitree G1 for bimanual box pick-and-place: the same deployed policy generalizes across object masses and dimensions, initial and goal poses, and reactively recovers from intentional drops mid-carry. Capability-Aware Heterogeneous Control Barrier Functions for Decentralized Multi-Robot Safe Navigation

Joonkyung Kim, Yanze Zhang, Wenhao Luo, Yiwei Lyu

原文摘要

Safe decentralized navigation in heterogeneous robot teams is challenging because robots with different dynamics and control limits cannot satisfy identical collision-avoidance obligations equally well. Existing methods often rely on model-specific safety formulations or allocate avoidance responsibility without considering whether the assigned control is physically realizable, possibly leading to safety-constrained QP infeasibility and safety violations. We propose Capability-Aware Heterogeneous Control Barrier Functions (CA-HCBF), a decentralized framework for consistent safety enforcement and capability-aware responsibility allocation. We derive a unified operational-space second-order control-affine formulation for holonomic and nonholonomic mobile robots through canonical transformation and backstepping, addressing the relative-degree mismatch while preserving forward invariance of the pairwise safe set. Second, we quantify each robot's achievable control authority along the safety-critical direction using a support-function-based capability metric and use it to distribute pairwise avoidance responsibility. A feasibility-aware clipping mechanism further mitigates physically unrealizable responsibility assignments. Simulations with up to 30 heterogeneous robots and hardware experiments demonstrate high task completion with low safety violations and reduction in local QP infeasibility.

Conduct Under Pressure: What Sixty Language Models Do When a User Pushes

Tapan Parikh

原文摘要

We study what LLMs do when a user applies pressure in an uncomfortable situation: a user insists, begs, flatters or grieves, and the model gives up a correct fact, writes a document it should refuse, or cheers a plan that will cost the user money, a multi-turn form of sycophancy. We send frozen multi-turn scenes to 60 models from 13 vendors and label each transcript with a trajectory (the model held its position or folded) and a manner (how it held or folded). Three scenes were used to build the codebook; six more were written afterwards and preregistered as a replication. Whether a model holds tracks its generation: fold rate correlates with a public capability index at Spearman -0.64 to -0.69 across the two scene sets, so newer models fold less, unlike earlier reports that sycophancy grows with model scale. How a model holds tracks the vendor: six of the 17 manner codes sort by vendor at permutation p <= 0.001, corrected across the codebook, and four do so again on the replication scenes. Anthropic's models name the feeling, warn and offer an alternative; OpenAI's do less of all three and almost never cite their own rules; Google's cite themselves and their AI nature when asked to do something; Meta's write the artifact they shouldn't. Six LLM coders from three vendors labeled every transcript, and three human coders labeled fifty held-out transcripts. The machines were the more consistent readers (Krippendorff's alpha 0.66 against 0.46), agreed with the author on trajectory at kappa 0.84 to 0.91, and matched the adjudicated reference at 0.83. For behavior a non-specialist can judge, the human contribution is authoring and bounding the codes and owning a small reference, not producing labels at volume.

On the Divergence of Differential Temporal Difference Learning without Local Clocks

David Antrobius, Shangtong Zhang

原文摘要

Learning rate is a critical component of reinforcement learning (RL). This work uses global and local clocks to distinguish two types of learning rates. The former is of the standard form $α_t$ that depends only on the time step $t$ (i.e., a global clock). The latter is of the form $α_{ν(S_t, t)}$, where $ν(s, t)$ counts the number of visits to state $s$ until time $t$ (i.e., a local clock). In discounted RL, an RL algorithm that is convergent with a local clock is always also convergent with a global clock, and vice versa. We are not aware of any counterexample. The key contribution of this work is to show that this nice correspondence breaks down in average-reward RL. Specifically, we construct a counterexample showing that although differential temporal difference (TD) learning is convergent with a local clock, it can diverge with a global clock. We empirically observe this divergence in our experiments and also prove that the associated ODE of differential TD with a global clock is unstable. This counterexample closes the open problem in Wan et al. [2021], Blaser et al. [2026].
