When Policy Entropy Constraint Fails: Preserving Diversity in Flow-based RLHF via Perceptual Entropy

Xiaofeng Tan, Jun Liu, Bin-Bin Gao, Yuanting Fan, Xi Jiang, Chengjie Wang, Hongsong Wang, Feng Zheng

原文摘要

RLHF is widely used to align flow-matching text-to-image models with human preferences, but often leads to severe diversity collapse after fine-tuning. In RL, diversity is often assumed to correlate with policy entropy, motivating entropy regularization. However, we show this intuition breaks in flow models: policy entropy remains constant, even while perceptual diversity collapses. We explain this mismatch both theoretically and empirically: the constant entropy arises from the fixed, pre-defined noise schedule, while the diversity collapse is driven by the mode-seeking nature of policy gradients. As a result, policy entropy fails to prevent the model from converging to a narrow high-reward region in the perceptual space. To this end, we introduce perceptual entropy that captures diversity in a perceptual space and maintains the property of standard entropy. Building upon this insight, we propose two entropy-regularized strategies, Perceptual Entropy Constraint and Perceptual Constraints on Generation Space, to preserve perceptual diversity and improve the quality. Experiments across two base models, neural and rule-based rewards, and three perceptual spaces demonstrate consistent gains in the quality-diversity trade-off; PEC achieves the best overall score of 0.734 (vs. baseline's 0.366); a complementary setting of PEC further reaches a diversity average of 0.989 (vs. baseline's 0.047). TraceRouter++: Causal Semantic Routing Realignment via Optimal Transport

Chuancheng Shi, Shangze Li, Wenhua Wu, Hengzhi Chen, Fei Shen, Li Zhuo, Zhiyong Wang, Tat-Seng Chua

原文摘要

Despite their remarkable capabilities, large foundation models (LFMs) remain susceptible to adversarial manipulation. Current safety intervention methods primarily rely on the \textit{locality hypothesis}, rigidly suppressing isolated neurons or features. However, harmful semantics manifest as distributed, cross-layer circuits, rendering localized ablations both brittle against complex jailbreaks and detrimental to general utility. To bridge this gap, we propose TraceRouter++, a routing-level safety intervention framework that explicitly traces safety-relevant causal routing pathways activated under harmful inputs and realigns their unsafe activation states. Our framework operates in a \textit{Discover-Trace-Realign} paradigm: it first pinpoints a sensitive onset layer via attention divergence and disentangles dense activations into interpretable routing features using sparse autoencoders (SAEs). Subsequently, it maps these features to downstream causal circuits via feature influence scores (FIS). Crucially, departing from rigid suppression paradigms, TraceRouter++ introduces a constrained optimal transport (OT)-based soft routing realignment. By formulating safety intervention as a tractable coordinate-wise marginal optimal transport approximation, our method redirects unsafe activation marginals toward safe-reference marginals within causally identified routing subspaces while preserving non-selected coordinates at the intervention point. This mechanism safely redirects malicious semantic flows while leaving orthogonal computational routes intact. Extensive experiments across representative large language models (LLMs), multimodal large language models (MLLMs), and diffusion models (DMs) show that TraceRouter++ outperforms evaluated baselines, improving adversarial robustness while maintaining a favorable safety-utility trade-off. WARNING: This paper contains unsafe model responses.

Local information processing capacity: anatomy of computation in neuromorphic systems

Jiaxuan Chen, Daiki Nishioka, Yicheng Song, Ryo Iguchi, Sota Hikasa, Hina Kitano, Akira Hirose, Takashi Tsuchiya

原文摘要

Many neuromorphic systems possess rich internal computational structures shaped by their physical dynamics. However, existing metrics characterize only global computation, leaving these local structures unresolved despite their importance for system interpretation, optimization and miniaturization. Here, we introduce local information processing capacity (L-IPC), which represents individual dynamical states as vectors in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and decomposes their computational properties through subspace projections onto nonlinearity orders and memory steps, with the residual quantifying computational irrelevance. Applied to three systems with comparable global capacities (an echo state network, an ion-gating reservoir and a spin-wave reservoir), L-IPC reveals markedly different distributions of computation, ranging from homogeneous to spatially, temporally and spectrally structured patterns. These local profiles further guide task-specific pruning, outperforming standard approaches at the same size in the structured systems. These results establish L-IPC as a general framework for anatomizing computation and guiding task-adaptive design in neuromorphic systems.

Llama See, Llama Do: A Mechanistic Perspective on Contextual Entrainment and Distraction in LLMs

Jingcheng Niu, Xingdi Yuan, Tong Wang, Hamidreza Saghir, Amir H. Abdi

原文摘要

We observe a novel phenomenon, contextual entrainment, across a wide range of language models (LMs) and prompt settings, providing a new mechanistic perspective on how LMs become distracted by ``irrelevant'' contextual information in the input prompt. Specifically, LMs assign significantly higher logits (or probabilities) to any tokens that have previously appeared in the context prompt, even for random tokens. This suggests that contextual entrainment is a mechanistic phenomenon, occurring independently of the relevance or semantic relation of the tokens to the question or the rest of the sentence. We find statistically significant evidence that the magnitude of contextual entrainment is influenced by semantic factors. Counterfactual prompts have a greater effect compared to factual ones, suggesting that while contextual entrainment is a mechanistic phenomenon, it is modulated by semantic factors. We hypothesise that there is a circuit of attention heads -- the entrainment heads -- that corresponds to the contextual entrainment phenomenon. Using a novel entrainment head discovery method based on differentiable masking, we identify these heads across various settings. When we ``turn off'' these heads, i.e., set their outputs to zero, the effect of contextual entrainment is significantly attenuated, causing the model to generate output that capitulates to what it would produce if no distracting context were provided. Our discovery of contextual entrainment, along with our investigation into LM distraction via the entrainment heads, marks a key step towards the mechanistic analysis and mitigation of the distraction problem.

The Complexity of Unpredictability

Aryan Agarwala, Dani Dorfman

原文摘要

We initiate the study of middle-bit predictors: functions that take as input a string with one missing bit and try to predict that bit. These are closely related to next-bit predictors, a classical object in pseudorandomness. We study the deterministic complexity of computing an unpredictable distribution (UNPRED). Given a list of middle-bit predictors in circuit form and a parameter $ε>0$, output a multiset of strings such that each predictor succeeds with probability less than $1/2+ε$ on a uniformly sampled string from the multiset. We write $\mathsf{UNPRED}^{\mathsf{TC}^1}$ for the restriction to $\mathsf{TC}^1$ predictors. We show that UNPRED offers a unified route towards resolving several major open problems in catalytic computation, the biggest of which is whether deterministic polynomial time (P and FP) can simulate catalytic logspace (CL and SearchCL). It is believed that $\mathsf{SearchCL}\subseteq\mathsf{FP}$. We prove $$\mathsf{UNPRED}\in\mathsf{FP}\implies\mathsf{SearchCL}\subseteq\mathsf{FP}\implies\mathsf{UNPRED}^{\mathsf{TC}^1}\in\mathsf{FP}.$$ Thus, the questions of whether UNPRED is in FP and whether SearchCL is contained in FP are almost equivalent, up to the restriction to $\mathsf{TC}^1$ circuits. We also show that any deterministic polynomial-time algorithm for $\mathsf{UNPRED}^{\mathsf{TC}^1}$ must exploit properties of $\mathsf{TC}^1$ circuits, either in the algorithm itself or in its analysis. To our knowledge, this would also be the first algorithm to use the structure of $\mathsf{TC}^1$ circuits in this way to solve a natural problem, thus advancing our understanding of Boolean circuits. Together, our results provide strong evidence that middle-bit predictors could be the key to unlocking several major open problems in catalytic computation, pseudorandomness, and Boolean circuit complexity.

3D Gaussian Splatting within Self-Learned Neural View-Dependent Color Fields

Yixiao Yang, Yu-Shen Liu, Zhizhong Han

原文摘要

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has become a vital tool in novel view synthesis. 3D Gaussian functions with attributes like color, opacity, and scale are stacked together to explicitly model a radiance field. However, discrete 3D Gaussians usually produce poor depth with few geometry details but lots of floaters, which hinders the effective modeling of smooth radiance fields. To address this issue, we propose to learn a radiance field within a continuous view-dependent color field parameterized by neural networks. With continuous constraints in color, the bias on low-frequency signals of neural networks can highly encourage the geometry modeling to contribute to high-frequency color variations on images, getting rid of solely relying on the color attribute itself. Moreover, we impose a constraint to improve the Lipschitz continuity of the neural color field, making large changes of each Gaussian's color also match with large changes of its position in terms of a ratio. To this end, we additionally introduce novel self-learning strategies to improve the learning of the neural view-dependent color field without any external knowledge or priors, aiming for better generalization on unseen scenes. Our numerical and visual comparisons on widely used benchmarks justify our idea and show better ability of high fidelity geometry recovery in 3DGS. Robots in the City: Persona-Based Perceptions of Urban Robots

原文摘要

Pedestrians increasingly encounter robots in urban public spaces without interacting with them, but how robots change the perceived safety of a street remains unclear. We examine how robot presence and type affect perceived safety across urban contexts. We generate 18 images of Seoul streets that vary in time of day, road class, and robot condition (no robot, a delivery robot, or a humanoid). Two multimodal large language models (MLLMs), Qwen3.8-27B and Gemma4-26B, each conditioned on 500 synthetic personas, choose the safer image in each pair, and 25 human respondents complete the same task. Both models prefer streets without robots and favor the delivery robot over the humanoid. Robots are chosen more often at night and less often by older personas, whereas road class has smaller effects. In the model rationales, the delivery robot appears as a physical obstacle, whereas the humanoid appears as either a threat or a source of protection. Like humans, both models chose robots more often at night, but chose the humanoid over the delivery robot far less often, and Gemma showed a night effect for the humanoid about three times that of humans. These results show that the effect of a robot on perceived safety depends on when it appears, and that persona-conditioned MLLMs capture only part of human judgments.

Graph-Mediated Large Language Model Systems in the Agentic Era: Reasoning, Knowledge, Retrieval, Execution, and Coordination

原文摘要

Graphs play an increasingly important role in large language model (LLM) systems, supporting structural reasoning, knowledge grounding, retrieval, and memory. As these systems evolve toward the agentic era, graphs also organize execution dependencies and multi-agent communication, linking intermediate observations and retained information to subsequent decisions. However, understanding their contribution requires distinguishing the function of each graph operation, the component responsible for its computation, and the subsequent use of its output. This survey introduces an operation-level role--locus taxonomy for reasoning, knowledge and evidence, retrieval and memory, execution, and coordination. We compare how graph observations and external computations guide decisions, how memory representations and updates support later tasks, and how dependencies constrain execution and information delivery. These comparisons distinguish improvements in local metrics from downstream task performance while retaining the conditions under which results were reported. We then organize benchmarks, comparison designs, process diagnostics, and system costs into an evaluation framework. Finally, we identify open challenges in adaptive computation and stopping, memory maintenance, and dependency-aware recovery. The survey provides a basis for assessing when graph mechanisms are useful and for evaluating their effects across components and stages.

ParaVT: Taming the Tool Prior Paradox for Parallel Tool Use in Agentic Video Reinforcement Learning

Zuhao Yang, Kaichen Zhang, Sudong Wang, Keming Wu, Zhongyu Yang, Bo Li, Xiaojuan Qi, Shijian Lu 等 10 位作者

原文摘要

Training large multimodal models (LMMs) via reinforcement learning (RL) to natively invoke video-processing tools (e.g., cropping) has become a promising route to long-video understanding. However, most existing agentic Video-LMMs dispatch tool calls sequentially (i.e., one per turn). Sequential tool calling can propagate localization errors, accumulate irrelevant context, and require an additional main-model generation for each successive crop. We introduce ParaVT, a multi-agent RL framework for Parallel Video Tool calling, dispatching multiple time-window crops in a single turn, allowing evidence from multiple temporal windows to be examined concurrently. Yet applying standard Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) to ParaVT reveals an obstacle we term the Tool Prior Paradox: inherited tool-use priors appear to support exploration while competing with the output format learned during supervised fine-tuning. Standard RL can also settle on tool skipping. A comparison with a model with weaker tool-use priors shows stable formatting but no tool calls during RL, consistent with a trade-off between format stability and tool exploration. We propose PARA-GRPO (Parseability-Anchored and Ratio-gAted GRPO), which augments standard RL with two complementary mechanisms: (i) a format reward that encourages tag closure and penalizes unclosed reasoning blocks, and (ii) a per-prompt randomization of the overview-frame budget to create a reward advantage for tool use when the overview provides insufficient evidence. Across six long-video understanding benchmarks, ParaVT improves over the Qwen3-VL baseline by +7.9% on average, with PARA-GRPO raising training-time format reward from 0.13 to a peak of 0.64. These findings highlight the need to account for inherited tool-use priors when designing RL methods for long-video understanding.

Reference-Compatible Parallel Execution for Quantized LLM Inference

Chengzhan Li

原文摘要

Batching can change a quantized language model's logits even when token positions and causal masks are unchanged. We present a method for executing known queries in parallel while retaining the numerical behavior of a scalar deployment fixed before optimization. The method derives physical KV-prefix and backend arithmetic requirements, groups compatible queries, and keeps independent projection work batched. On CUDA, it packs independent four-column reductions into a broadcast batch without widening the reference-sensitive reduction. On Vulkan, it preserves projection activation arithmetic and extends a scalar attention path across query groups. Controlled interventions and frozen-input studies cover Llama, Qwen and SmolLM2. CUDA packing reduces complete resident-service time by 4.00% on four fresh inputs. Vulkan batched attention reduces ordinary-request time by 32.34% versus per-query attention and 52.87% versus scalar execution on twelve fresh inputs. Equally optimized whole-graph boundary cuts match local grouping on aligned natural prefill and outperform it at some wider Vulkan query sizes. At deliberately crossing CUDA appends, local grouping gives a $1.307\times$ speedup over whole-graph cuts; this conditional result is not a workload-average speedup. These results identify how numerical compatibility constrains parallel execution and how width and alignment determine the benefit of local cuts.

Operationalizing Responsible AI in MLOps and ML Production: A Systematic Literature Review

Hinduja Nirujan, Siddhartha Paudel, Gouri Ginde

原文摘要

Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled systems are increasingly deployed in operational environments where machine learning (ML) models interact with changing data, users, infrastructure, and organizational processes. While Responsible AI principles are widely discussed, less is known about how these principles are translated into concrete mechanisms within Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) and ML production workflows. This paper reports a systematic literature review of studies that operationalize Responsible AI in ML production. The review synthesizes evidence across monitoring and runtime assurance, audit and compliance, ML lifecycle integration, and traceability/provenance/documentation. Across the final study set, the literature shows a shift from abstract ethical principles toward engineering mechanisms such as drift monitoring, runtime checks, audit logs, provenance records, evidence bundles, governance gates, policy-as-code, model passports, and compliance-oriented documentation. However, the evidence base remains uneven: many studies propose architectures or prototypes, while fewer evaluate the mechanisms in realistic production settings, longitudinal operations, or organizational governance workflows. The review identifies a central gap around integrated, evidence-producing Responsible MLOps: current mechanisms often detect, document, or govern isolated parts of the ML lifecycle, but rarely connect runtime signals, ML lifecycle provenance, human accountability, and compliance evidence into closed operational loops. These findings motivate future software engineering research on traceable, evaluable, and operationally integrated Responsible AI support for ML production.

One Basket, Many Experts: Decorrelated Re-ranking for Financial Asset Recommendation

Ryuki Unno, Keigo Sakurai, Koshi Watanabe, Keisuke Maeda, Takahiro Ogawa, Miki Haseyama

原文摘要

Financial asset recommendation for retail investors is typically optimized for relevance, that is, how well a recommendation matches what each user will buy. From the service provider's point of view, the value of a recommendation also depends on portfolio performance: the risk-adjusted return the recommended assets (the basket) deliver, which drives user engagement and fee revenue. The two goals are rarely achieved jointly, because the recommendations that best match user behavior concentrate on a few popular assets whose returns are highly correlated, which caps the risk-adjusted return a provider can offer. We propose Decorrelated-Satellite Expert Re-ranking (\textbf{DSER}), which retains the most relevant recommendations from an expert-following list and replaces the rest with return-decorrelated alternatives. The number of replaced slots is a single integer~$m$ (a knob) that the provider sets, so the relevance--performance trade-off becomes an explicit, auditable choice rather than a property hidden inside a learned model. In experiments on the public FAR-Trans retail-brokerage dataset, under the primary protocol, replacing a few slots improves risk-adjusted return at a small relevance cost, and the gain survives realistic trading costs at typical retail portfolio sizes. Minimizing correlation would lower basket volatility, but in our data the least-correlated assets are more volatile and higher-return, so their volatility offsets that reduction while their return drives the gain, not lower volatility. The resulting trade-off is asymmetric, with the relevance cost consistent across market phases while the gain is phase-dependent. The provider sets $m$ to read off exactly how much relevance each operating point costs.

MedConstBench: Benchmarking How Constitutions Steer LLMs in Medical Ethics

Yibo Yang, Zerui Huang, Haomiao Yang, Zixia Wang

原文摘要

As large language models advance rapidly, they are increasingly used to answer medical questions, and many such models are now deployed locally. Once a model is deployed, its behavior is governed mainly by the ethical policy written into its constitution. However, most existing work focuses on factual correctness rather than the trade-off between competing ethical values. Even benchmarks that do evaluate ethics treat it as a fixed property of the model rather than as a variable, so how a constitution reshapes medical-ethics behavior remains largely unexplored. We introduce MedConstBench, a medical-ethics benchmark that treats the deployment constitution as a controlled variable, is organized around Beauchamp's four principles, and is scored by human-calibrated multi-model peer review. It includes MedDilemma, our own dataset of clinical dilemmas, and supports a systematic analysis of how constitutions steer LLMs. Evaluating ten open-source LLMs under four constitutions, we find that the effect of a constitution is dimension-selective and model-dependent, and that no constitution is universally optimal. Motivated by these findings, we propose a do-no-harm adaptive selector that chooses a constitution per model, matching the per-model oracle while guaranteeing a worst-case floor and generalizing to unseen models at low cost.

Physical-Layer Anonymous Communication Design Under Symbol-Aware Identification and Transmitter-Dependent Noises

Yu Li, Milad Tatar Mamaghani, Xiangyun Zhou, Nan Yang

原文摘要

Physical-layer characteristics, such as channel state information (CSI) and transmitter noise induced by hardware impairments, are often uniquely associated with a transmitter. This paper investigates transmitter anonymity at the physical layer from a signal design perspective. We consider an anonymous communication problem where the receiver should reliably decode the signal from the transmitter but should not make use of the signal to infer the transmitter's identity. Transmitter anonymity is quantified using a Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD)-based metric, which enables the formulation of explicit anonymity constraints in the precoder design. We then develop a transceiver design that preserves reliable communication under spatial multiplexing while preventing transmitter identification. The proposed framework employs a partitioned equal-gain combining (P-EGC) scheme that leverages receiver diversity without requiring transmitter-specific CSI. Simulation results demonstrate anonymity-reliability tradeoffs across different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), numbers of data streams, and alias selection methods. Moreover, the results reveal opposite trends of anonymity with respect to transmitter-dependent noise variations in the low-SNR and high-SNR regimes.

Community Search under Member-Specific Tolerances

Yanghao Liu, Fangda Guo, Yuxuan Zhang, Xueqi Cheng

原文摘要

We study community search when each vertex has its own tolerance for differences in position. For positions such as opinions or homes, a latitude-consistent community (LCC) contains the query vertex, is connected, has minimum degree at least k, and bounds its diameter by the smallest member tolerance. Motivated by social judgment theory, the bound exactly characterizes persistent acceptance of every interaction in a closed group under bounded-confidence dynamics with arbitrary positive weights. It also prevents rejection under social-judgment dynamics, whereas natural relaxations preserve neither guarantee. Finding a maximum LCC is NP-hard even in the plane, and with unbounded dimension, deciding whether an LCC exists is NP-complete for every fixed k >= 2. LatSweep turns the coupled bound into a sweep over the smallest tolerance, yielding two feasible heuristics, a (1,2)-bicriteria approximation and an exact branch-and-bound algorithm. Across eight graphs with up to 1.8 billion edges, the exact algorithm proves optimality on all but 9 of 3,700 efficiency queries and usually certifies absence within microseconds when no LCC exists. Its branch-and-bound solver proves more queries than a reimplemented maximum-(k,r)-core algorithm, a mixed-integer program and CP-SAT. In simulations, uneven influence disrupts initially accepted interactions in pairwise groups. Outside ties invalidate the guarantee for many real groups. On two location-based networks, tolerance-agnostic groups often place another member's home beyond a member's estimated travel radius; comparisons with spatial communities of the same size detect no co-visit loss from enforcing every member's tolerance.

Disentangle to create: Architecture-level disentangled diffusion model for few-shot Chinese font generation

Jie Li, Suorong Yang, Jian Zhao, Furao Shen

原文摘要

Few-shot Chinese font generation aims to synthesize new characters in a target style using only a handful of reference images. Achieving accurate content rendering and faithful style transfer requires effective disentanglement between content and style. However, most existing approaches achieve only feature-level disentanglement and allow the generator to re-entangle these features, leading to content distortion and degraded style fidelity. To address this, we propose the Architecture-Level Disentangled Diffusion Model (ALD-Font) with an asymmetric design. The U-Net backbone takes SimSun-style glyphs as content templates, concatenated with noisy latents to construct a spatial canvas. Style features extracted from target-style images are injected as modulation signals to guide generation. Based on theoretical validation of disentanglement effectiveness, we adopt a parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) strategy that updates only the style-related modules. This allows the model to better adapt to new styles while avoiding overfitting to the reference images' content under the few-shot setting. Additionally, we train a Background Noise Removal (BNR) module in the pixel space to remove background noise in complex stroke regions. We further introduce the Grey and OCR metrics to evaluate the content quality of generated characters. Experimental results show that ALD-Font achieves significantly higher style fidelity while maintaining comparable content accuracy to existing state-of-the-art methods. The implementation is available at https://github.com/JayLee1002/ALD-Font.

FLINT: Coupling Proximal Initialization and Bounded Stochasticity for Flow-Matching Inverse Problems

Junseo Bang, Daewon Choi, Dong Ju Mun, Se Young Chun

原文摘要

Flow matching models have emerged as a dominant paradigm for generative posterior sampling in imaging inverse problems. Existing solvers follow two distinct lines of work: trajectory-space methods, which refine sampling dynamics from random initial noise, and source-space methods, which optimize the initial noise itself. While most prior work treats these as independent design choices, we show that they are inherently coupled. We derive a unified stability bound that links initialization proximity and cumulative sampling stochasticity through a multiplicative envelope, complemented by two empirical observations. First, we identify a sufficiency regime in which a moderately optimized proximal source initialization is enough to attain the performance plateau, rendering exhaustive source-space optimization unnecessary. Second, this initial advantage is fragile: it is eroded by excessive stochasticity accumulation during guided sampling, necessitating a mechanism that bounds the cumulative noise injection. These findings motivate FLINT, a two-stage framework that operationalizes this coupling. FLINT establishes a high-fidelity starting point via a manifold-constrained proximal objective in only a few iterations, then performs guided sampling under a bounded stochasticity schedule that helps prevent erasure of the initialization advantage. Across diverse inverse problems, FLINT delivers state of the art perceptual quality and competitive distortion metrics while maintaining superior computational efficiency.

BAM: Bivariate Additive Models for Interpretable Tabular Prediction

Atsushi Koike

原文摘要

Generalized Additive Models with pairwise interactions (GA$^2$Ms) are regarded as glass-box models, since each pairwise shape function can be visualized as a contour plot. In practice, the shape functions learned by methods such as EBM or NODE-GAM are so complex (irregular contours and sharp local fluctuations) that a practitioner cannot meaningfully interpret them or check them against domain knowledge. Auditability in this stronger sense requires substantially simpler shape functions. We argue that such simplification can match the accuracy of standard GAMs if the right feature pairs are captured. We propose Bivariate Additive Models (BAMs), a class of GA$^2$Ms in which every pairwise shape function is constrained to a simple parametric form, instantiated as an asymmetric bivariate Gaussian. Each component is visualizable as a unimodal contour map, and its feature pair is selected automatically during training. Experiments on six tabular benchmarks show that BAM attains predictive accuracy comparable to standard GAMs and approaches that of GA$^2$Ms. We also show the trade-off between accuracy and the number of components to inspect.

Reflection-Robust Stereo Visual-Inertial Odometry via Kalman-Filtered Ground-Height Estimation

Uihyun Hwang, Sungjae Shin, Dongjae Kim, Hyun Myung

原文摘要

Visual-inertial odometry relies on visual features that correspond to 3D points with consistent projections across sequential frames. In reflective indoor-floor environments, however, specular floor patterns can be detected and triangulated as virtual features below the physical ground plane, producing unreliable feature associations and inconsistent visual residuals. This paper proposes a lightweight reflection-aware front-end for feature-based stereo VIO. Rather than suppressing all floor-region features, the proposed method estimates the ground height in real time and rejects only feature candidates whose inferred 3D positions are below the estimated ground height. A floor-region mask restricts the validation process to reflection-prone regions, while stereo height uncertainty and pose uncertainty are used to construct frame-level ground-height measurements. A scalar Kalman filter with Normalized Innovation Squared (NIS) gating then provides a stable ground-height estimate, and an uncertainty-aware safety margin is used for selective below-ground virtual feature rejection. Experiments on real reflective-floor indoor sequences show that the proposed front-end generally improves trajectory accuracy in reflection-dominant environments while maintaining accurate ground-height estimates and recovering from actual ground-height changes.

Achieving adaptivity and optimality for multi-armed bandits using Exponential-Kullback Leibler Maillard Sampling

Hao Qin, Kwang-Sung Jun, Chicheng Zhang

原文摘要

We study the problem of $K$-armed bandits with reward distributions belonging to a one-parameter exponential distribution family. In the literature, several criteria have been proposed to evaluate the performance of such algorithms, including Asymptotic Optimality, Minimax Optimality, Sub-UCB, and variance-adaptive regret bound. Thompson Sampling-based and Upper Confidence Bound-based algorithms have been employed to achieve some of these criteria. However, none of these algorithms simultaneously satisfy all the aforementioned criteria. In this paper, we design an algorithm, Exponential Kullback-LeiblerMaillard Sampling (abbrev. Exp-KL-MS), that achieves multiple optimality criteria simultaneously, including Asymptotic Optimality, minimax ratio with a $\sqrt{\ln (K)}$ factor, Sub-UCB, and a variance-adaptive regret bound. Our algorithm design follows the Minimum Empirical Divergence framework~\citep{honda2011asymptotically,maillard2011apprentissage}, with the exploration probability of arm $a$ proportional to $\text{exp}\left(-L(N_{t-1, a}) \text{KL}(\hatμ_{t-1, a}, \max_{a'} \hatμ_{t-1, a'})\right)$, where $L(\cdot)$ is an inverse temperature function, $N_{t-1, a}$ is the number of times arm $a$ has been pulled before time $t$, $\hatμ_{t-1, a}$ is the empirical mean of arm $a$ before time $t$, and $\text{KL}(\cdot, \cdot)$ is the Kullback-Leibler divergence between two distributions in the one-parameter exponential distribution family. Our analysis allows different choices of inverse temperature function $L(k)$. We also provide numerical simulations demonstrating the effectiveness of our algorithms.

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) underpins spectrum sensing and non-cooperative signal identification in cognitive radio, yet the two standard CPU-feasible approaches to it, a compact convolutional neural network (CNN) on raw in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) samples and a classical higher-order-cumulant feature classifier, are rarely compared against each other conditioned on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We show that they are, in fact, complementary: the CNN is markedly more robust at low SNR, where hand-crafted statistics collapse toward chance, while the cumulant classifier is more accurate at high SNR, where higher-order statistics cleanly separate dense constellations. We exploit this complementarity with FuseAMC, a lightweight decision-fusion model that trains a logistic-regression meta-combiner over the concatenated class-posteriors of an approximately 198k-parameter residual CNN and a gradient-boosted-tree cumulant classifier, on a validation split disjoint from test. On RadioML 2016.10a (5 seeds, 44k-frame held-out test set), FuseAMC reaches 55.8% overall accuracy, improving on the best cumulant-feature baseline by 5.1 points and on the CNN alone by 3.2 points (paired-bootstrap 95% confidence-interval lower bounds of 5.0 and 3.1 points, both positive), while matching the best classical baseline in its own strong high-SNR regime and the CNN in its strong low-SNR regime. With about 0.2 million parameters, a model footprint of a few megabytes, and roughly 3 MFLOPs per frame, the whole pipeline trains and runs on one CPU core, targeting general-purpose and embedded processors without hardware acceleration.

LumiTac: Compact, High-Rate Six-Axis Optical Tactile Sensing for Human-Robot Interaction

Hao Wu, Haotian Guo, Yu Feng, Yutong Wang, Jianshu Zhou

原文摘要

Integrating six-axis tactile feedback into robotic interfaces requires compact sensors with accurate load measurement and rapid online reconstruction. This paper presents LumiTac, a low-profile, camera-free optoelectronic tactile sensor combining spatially distributed illumination with spectral encoding. Five photoemitters and five RGBW photoreceivers are mounted on opposing circuit boards coupled through translucent silicone. Load-induced interlayer motion modulates the internal light field under compression, shear, bending, and torsion. The sensing head measures 12 mm in diameter and 4.75 mm in thickness, weighs less than 2 g, and has a component cost of approximately USD 7. A compact multilayer perceptron reconstructs three force and three moment components from 20 optical channels. Independent testing yielded coefficients of determination (R-squared) of 0.9657-0.9941, with mean absolute errors of 0.054-0.190 N for forces and 0.304-1.419 mN m for moments. Online prediction achieved an average update rate of 303.57 Hz and a median software processing latency of 0.722 ms. Experiments involving combined loading, light weights, and rapid tapping evaluated load tracking, sensitivity to small forces, and transient response, respectively. Robotic demonstrations further validated its applicability to tactile-guided manipulation and physical human-robot interaction. This study paves the way for compact, high-rate optical tactile sensing in robotic manipulation and human-robot interaction.

Faster Dynamic Maximal Independent Set against Adaptive Adversaries

Hongyi Chen, Shuyan Fan, Tianyi Zhang

原文摘要

We study the fully dynamic maximal independent set (MIS) problem: maintaining an MIS in an undirected graph on $n$ vertices with at most $m$ edges under edge insertions and deletions. Against an oblivious adversary, which fixes the edge update sequence in advance, the randomized algorithms of Behnezhad et al. (2019) and Chechik and Zhang (2019) achieve polylogarithmic update time. Against an adaptive adversary, which may choose each update after observing the previously reported MISs, the best previously known update bound was $O(m^{2/3})$, given by the deterministic algorithm of Gupta and Khan (2018, 2021). Assuming the combinatorial Boolean matrix multiplication hypothesis, Bernstein et al. (2026) proved that any combinatorial algorithm against an adaptive adversary requires at least $m^{1/2-o(1)}$ update time even under edge insertions alone, leaving a polynomial gap between upper and lower bounds. We present a randomized fully dynamic MIS algorithm with $\widetilde O(m^{5/8})=\widetilde O(m^{2/3-1/24})$ update time against adaptive adversaries. This gives the first polynomial improvement over the $m^{2/3}$ bound for adaptive fully dynamic MIS.

Estimating Implicit Regularization in Deep Learning

Joseph H. Rudoler, Kevin Tan, Giles Hooker, Konrad P. Kording

原文摘要

Deep learning systems are known to exhibit implicit regularization (alt. implicit bias), favoring simple solutions instead of merely minimizing the loss function. In some cases, we can analytically derive the implicit regularization -- connecting it to an equivalent penalty that augments the learning objective. However, modern deep learning systems are complex, carrying modifications to the training procedure and architecture (e.g. early stopping, minibatching, dropout) whose effects are not always directly interpretable. Although estimating the resulting implicit regularization could aid theorists in algorithm design and practitioners in interpreting their hyperparameter choices, this problem has received little direct attention. It is also tractable: regularization makes weight updates deviate from loss gradients, promising a signal for identifying implicit bias. Here we provide gradient matching methods that can be used to empirically estimate the implicit regularization. Our method works on networks with known regularization, recovering popular explicit penalties like $\ell_1$ and $\ell_2$. It also replicates known implicit effects, like the quadratic weight penalty induced by early stopping in gradient descent, demonstrating that it can be used to test theories of implicit regularization. Crucially, because our method is empirical, it can handle implicit regularization in arbitrary networks. We demonstrate this use by characterizing implicit $\ell_2$ effects of dropout in deep networks. Our work shows that practitioners can use gradient matching to understand regularization in networks with implicit biases that are too complicated to derive analytically.

Diversity-Aware Experience Replay via Statistical Leverage Scores

Shaifalee Saxena, Alexander Scheinker

原文摘要

Off-policy deep reinforcement learning trains on random samples from a replay buffer of past experience. In physical robot settings, that buffer is dominated by routine: thousands of near-identical transitions from normal operation, while the rare events that define the edges of the task are rarely sampled. We propose scoring every stored transition by its statistical leverage, which measures how unusual it is relative to the buffer's own data, computed from the stored numbers alone, with no labels, rewards, or value network. We draw each mini-batch from a mixture of this score and uniform sampling. First, the natural way to build the score along the directions where the data varies most turns out to be blind when actions are stored as one-hot indicators, because indicator columns always win the variance ranking; we instead select the feature columns with the heaviest tails (largest kurtosis) where small far-away populations are revealed. Second, the importance weights that prioritized replay uses to keep gradients unbiased cancel the method exactly: with full correction, training matches uniform sampling, so we drop the correction and deliberately optimize the rebalanced objective. Third, when the rare situations of a log are relational, visible only in how a stretch of behavior relates to its goal, not in any single stored coordinate-per-transition scores are blind; applying the same tail rule to short trajectory windows described relative to their goal restores the signal, and on a three-joint arm that must push an object around an obstacle it raises the rare-task success from 0.49 to 0.69 against a labeled-oracle ceiling of 0.74.

Sample-Grained Approximate Unlearning with Provable Per-Sample Bounds

原文摘要

Machine unlearning aims to erase the influence of a designated forget set from a trained model while preserving strong utility on the retain set. Approximate unlearning methods efficiently achieve this goal without full retraining, but their effectiveness is primarily assessed using dataset-level aggregate metrics. These aggregate metrics can mask deviations from retraining at the level of individual samples. In this work, we focus on per-sample unlearning effectiveness. We introduce SALA (Sample-grained Likelihoods ALignment), a plug-in optimization framework that enables approximate unlearning methods to operate at the level of individual samples by steering each example toward its correct target distribution. To quantitatively assess this behavior, we further propose the sample-grained distribution gap, a metric that captures per-sample discrepancies between approximate unlearning and exact retraining output distributions. We provide theoretical guarantees showing that SALA contracts this gap and yields a bounded per-sample discrepancy to retraining. To make this framework practical, we develop a low-cost estimation method for the member and non-member target distributions. Extensive experiments on classification and generation tasks demonstrate that SALA reduces the sample-grained distribution gap by up to $86.67\%$ when paired with existing approximate unlearning baselines, while also improving robustness to unlearning hyperparameters.

Modality-Aware Expert Pruning for MoE-Based Multimodal Large Language Models

Donggeun Kim

原文摘要

Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) enables multimodal large language models (MLLMs) to scale capacity efficiently, but expert parameters dominate memory even though only a few experts are activated per token: they account for over 90% of model size in modern MoE-MLLMs (e.g., 54 GB out of about 58 GB in BF16 for InternVL3.5-30B-A3B and Qwen3-VL-30B-A3B). Expert pruning has emerged as an effective compression strategy, but existing methods aggregate importance uniformly across tokens, ignoring that the same expert may serve different roles for vision versus language processing. To address this, we propose MAEP (Modality-Aware Expert Pruning), a training-free framework that decomposes expert importance by modality in a single forward pass. MAEP introduces (1) Delta-H Output ($ΔH$), a redistribution-aware metric measuring the MoE output change when an expert is removed, and (2) low-attention vision tokens as a vision-side pruning signal that is dataset-stable: its expert-importance ranking remains stable across different datasets. Text-side importance serves as a preservation signal while vision-side importance serves as a pruning signal, and experts are ranked globally across layers. Experiments on three MoE-based MLLMs across multimodal and text benchmarks show that MAEP outperforms modality-agnostic baselines on the majority of multimodal benchmarks while remaining competitive on text-only tasks, reducing the BF16 expert weight footprint by about 27 GB (about 47% of total memory) so that the full weight footprint of an approximately 58 GB model fits within a single 40 GB GPU. Code is available at https://github.com/nota-github/MAEP.

Split-KV: Efficient Context Parallelism for Training Diffusion Drafters

Geng Zhang, Fangzhao Zhang, Cong Xie, Tiantian Fan, Yang You

原文摘要

Diffusion drafters accelerate speculative decoding by denoising multiple draft tokens in parallel. Their training uses anchor sampling to construct compact draft queries and performs cross-attention with a block-sparse mask over a much longer context. We empirically show that acceptance length remains stable as context scales with a fixed query budget, while increasing the query budget yields diminishing quality gains, jointly establishing a practical regime with queries far shorter than the context. No existing context parallelism (CP) method jointly exploits this query--context asymmetry and meets the nonlinear, sample-dependent load-balancing requirement created by anchor sampling. We present Split-KV, an exact CP method that keeps key/value shards local and limits per-layer attention communication to query-sized tensors, making this communication independent of context length. Its global query view further enables a cost-aware longest-processing-time-first (LPT) strategy that balances context key/value chunks by their realized attention cost. At a CP size of 64, Split-KV retains 85--91\% weak-scaling efficiency and achieves up to $3.67\times$ speedup over the fastest available CP baseline. LPT achieves $<$1\% imbalance and plans three orders of magnitude faster than the best load-balancing baseline. Code is available at https://github.com/zxgx/verl.

3D Banff Glomerulitis Scoring for Kidney Transplant Pathology: Feasibility Study for Volumetric Quantification

原文摘要

Quantifying glomerular inflammation in kidney-transplant biopsies is traditionally performed on single whole-slide sections using the Banff "most-severe section" rule, despite the inherently three-dimensional nature of lesion distribution. This 2D based assessment might lead to instability when inflammation varies across slices. This paper reports a feasibility study examining the technical feasibility and clinical relevance of extending Banff scoring into three dimensions. To this end, we propose a 3D Banff lesion-scoring framework that aligns serial sections, reconstructs glomerular identities across depth, and integrates inflammatory-cell counts in 3D under three scoring strategies: Compatible, Volumetric, and Deduplicated Volumetric. In the experiments, glomerulitis (g-scores) was used as an example Banff metric and applied to multi-section renal allograft biopsies. Our findings indicate that 3D Banff g-scores are more consistent across sections and, under the semi-automatic setting, the Volumetric strategy correlates more strongly with clinical biomarkers than traditional 2D scores. These results show that 3D volumetric quantification offers promising added value, underscoring the potential benefit of 3D-aware Banff scoring for kidney transplant pathology.
