Sum-of-Squares Refutation Implies Planted Recovery for Semirandom CSPs

Arpon Basu, Andrew D. Lin, Peter Manohar

原文摘要

We give a $n^{O(\ell)}$-time algorithm for solving semirandom planted instances of a $k$-ary Boolean constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) with $m \gtrsim \left(\frac{n}{\ell}\right)^{k/2} \ell \, \mathrm{polylog}(n)$ constraints, for any choice of the runtime parameter $\ell$. Up to $\mathrm{polylog}(n)$ factors, this matches the known runtime vs.\ number of constraints trade-off for refuting semirandom CSPs, as well as the trade-off for solving fully random planted CSPs. Prior work on designing algorithms for semirandom CSPs follows a high-level blueprint of decomposing the constraint hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ of the instance into pieces, each with an explicit pseudorandom property that allows the standard algorithm for random CSPs to succeed on every piece. We depart considerably from this framework and instead implicitly \emph{learn} such a decomposition, without appealing directly to explicit properties such as expansion. More generally, we construct such a learning algorithm from the assumption that semirandom $k$-XOR has Sum-of-Squares certificates of refutation. This yields the broader implication that any Sum-of-Squares refutation algorithm for semirandom $k$-XOR gives a corresponding algorithm for solving semirandom planted CSPs, and instantiating this reduction with known Sum-of-Squares algorithms for refuting semirandom $k$-XOR gives our main algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reduction from search to refutation for (semi)random CSPs.

Identifying Neural Dynamics Using Nonlinear Interventional State Space Models

Hanna M. Tolle, Carles Balsells-Rodas, Yixin Wang, Pedro A. M. Mediano, Amin Nejatbakhsh

原文摘要

State-space models (SSMs) recover low-dimensional latent dynamics from high-dimensional observations, but latents are generally not identifiable from observational data alone. Interventional state-space models (iSSMs) use perturbations to break observational symmetries and identify parameters up to permutation, scaling, and shift. However, prior work restricts identifiability to linear latent dynamics and piecewise-linear emissions, excluding many behaviors characteristic of neural circuits. We extend iSSMs to a substantially broader model class: we prove that (i) affine identifiability holds under general injective emission functions and Gaussian latent transitions, and (ii) with interventions, identifiability up to permutation, scaling, and shift is preserved under general nonlinear latent dynamics. We validate our theory on simulated FitzHugh-Nagumo dynamics, and then demonstrate two applications: adjudicating between competing models of decision-making; and predicting responses to unseen micro-stimulation in macaque and human neural recordings, with proof-of-concept generalization to a held-out stimulation site in the latter. Finally, simulations yield practical guidance for designing stimulation protocols that improve identifiability.

Reinforcing End-to-End Autonomous Driving Safety via Negative-Aware Planning in a Unified World-Action Model

Zihao Zhang, Xinyu Zhang, Bing Zeng, Xingyu Chen, Zhenning Li, Bin Yu, Ziyuan Pu

原文摘要

World-action models (WAMs) jointly model future traffic states and driving actions for end-to-end autonomous driving in intelligent transportation systems. However, their action learning remains dominated by expert-trajectory imitation, leaving unsafe alternatives close to expert trajectories insufficiently constrained. To improve WAM robustness in safety-critical scenarios, we propose NegWAM, a safety post-training framework for unified WAMs that learns explicit safety boundaries from near-expert failure trajectories. NegWAM constructs negative trajectories that are geometrically close to the expert trajectory yet carry safety risks, uses them as repulsive anchors to steer predictions away from dangerous behavior, and encodes them as scene-conditioned rider tokens to learn scene--trajectory compatibility. During training, NegWAM jointly optimizes the flow-matching and near-expert negative objectives, while the auxiliary rider branch is discarded at inference, incurring no additional overhead. On NAVSIM v2, NegWAM achieves 40.4 EPDMS on navhard, a 4.1% relative improvement over the strongest compared scorer-free WAM baseline, and achieves 93.3 EPDMS on navtest. These results demonstrate that NegWAM achieves strong performance in safety-critical scenarios while preserving routine-driving performance. Zero-shot closed-loop evaluation on HUGSIM further demonstrates cross-benchmark generalization. The code is available at https://github.com/Zizizi-hao/NegWAM.

Cleaning or Recalling? Knowledge Dependence in LLM-based Data Cleaning [Experiment, Analysis & Benchmark]

Jingru Yang, Honglu Zhang, Jiayi Mi, Ju Fan, Zheng Chen, Xiaoyong Du

原文摘要

High scores on public data-cleaning benchmarks can reflect knowledge of familiar entities, making it difficult to assess how well an LLM repairs unfamiliar data. We present CoRE (Cleaning or Recalling), a protocol comparing public benchmarks with fresh real records and paired name surrogates built from English words or syllables. The surrogates retain error positions and non-identity values while transferring the benchmark's error mechanisms. Across 21 controlled tables and eight LLMs, repair performance varies substantially with entity names on Hospital and, for commercial models, Movies. Renaming removes some information needed for repair, such as a film's identifier mapping. It also affects repairs whose candidates remain available: replacing entity names with word-based surrogates lowers DeepSeek-V4-Pro's year accuracy from 91% to 18%. On Hospital and Movies, commercial models score higher on fresh records than on word-based surrogates. A screened continuation probe finds no positive evidence of benchmark-row memory in the tested models. Familiar facts can conflict with the task. Even with explicit table-evidence instructions, commercial models rewrite assigned directors at rates of 0.000-0.404 on known films. Reference scoring can also disagree with external records. On Rayyan, an ISSN correction matching a title-matched PubMed record receives no credit, whereas 94% of TabClean's credited repairs reproduce the reference date transformation. We provide controlled tables, scoring code and materials for offline replay.

原文摘要

Vision-based rover autonomy requires integrating perception, localization, planning and platform-specific control under limited sensing and computing resources. We present an open-source ROS 2 stack for following directional arrows, reaching a terminal cone and returning autonomously to the start. It connects YOLOv8n detection and geometric direction, range and bearing estimation with RGB-D SLAM, wheel-inertial state estimation, kinematics-aware planning, behavior-tree mission management and STM32 actuation. Standard interfaces separate reusable autonomy from the hardware layer; a proportional path-following plugin supports low-speed rover motion. Public resources include software, configuration, a labeled dataset, trained weights and evaluation logs. On 478 held-out images, the detector achieves mAP@0.5 of 0.720 under the Ultralytics evaluator and outperforms a classical OpenCV baseline under a shared evaluation protocol. The reported perception latency is 25 ms on a Jetson Orin NX. Three missions, one indoor and two outdoor, demonstrate marker-guided navigation and autonomous return without operator motion commands or reported collisions. Field results document integration failures and corrective choices; repeated instrumented trials remain necessary to quantify physical navigation errors and reliability.

Towards Practical 20 kbps Generative Video Compression via Adaptive Tokenization and Entropy Modeling

Jiancheng Zhao, Jixiang Luo, Haibin Huang, Chi Zhang, Xuelong Li

原文摘要

Video compression at ultra-low bitrates remains challenging due to the loss of perceptually important details under limited bit budgets. Recent generative video compression methods leverage pretrained video priors to improve perceptual quality and temporal coherence, but many follow a compress-then-generate paradigm, where generative priors are primarily exploited during reconstruction. Moreover, representations learned for generation and reconstruction are not inherently optimized for entropy coding. In this work, we propose \method, which adapts pretrained video representations into compression-oriented representations while preserving their reconstruction capability. Specifically, we adapt the pretrained causal video VAE of MiniMax-H3 into a discrete video tokenizer and develop a small autoregressive entropy model that captures local and global token dependencies, with grouped prediction for parallel decoding. To further improve coding efficiency, we jointly optimize the tokenizer and entropy model using a differentiable rate surrogate, allowing rate gradients to adapt token assignments toward lower coding costs while preserving reconstruction quality. Experiments on UVG, MCL-JCV, and HEVC Class B demonstrate superior perceptual rate--distortion performance, achieving BD-LPIPS savings of 82.2\%--87.5\% and BD-DISTS savings of 78.3\%--85.0\% relative to GLC-Video.

原文摘要

Tree-species composition shapes forest productivity and how forests respond to climate disturbances such as drought, windthrow and insect outbreaks. Yet most national forest maps assign each pixel a single dominant species and cannot show the share of accompanying species. We mapped the basal-area shares of ten main tree species and a residual Other class across Switzerland at 30 m resolution. A deep-learning model combining 0.1 m aerial RGB imagery, airborne laser scanning (ALS), annual AlphaEarth satellite embeddings, and climate variables was trained on basal-area observations from 3,992 Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI) sites. In spatial cross-validation, the model reached a macro-$R^2$ of 0.485 across the 11 classes. On an independent forest-reserve dataset, the map reached a macro-$R^2$ of 0.552 for individual 30 m pixels and 0.733 for plots, and identified the dominant class in 73.2% of pixels and 81.1% of plots. The map shows maple and ash as widespread minor components that dominant-class maps omit. It also reproduces the elevational sequence from broadleaved lowland stands through spruce to larch and Arolla pine near the treeline. By resolving the species mixture within each 30 m pixel, the map complements field inventory statistics with spatially continuous information that can support forest monitoring, the management of mixed stands, and climate-adaptation planning across Switzerland.

Your Multimodal Speech Model Says I Have a Face for Radio

Maya K. Nachesa, Vlad Niculae, Vagrant Gautam

原文摘要

As large neural models have become better at language tasks, researchers are increasingly building multi- and omnimodal models that handle more than one modality of data. One example is the expansion of speech recognition models to audio-visual data, the goal being noise mitigation and multimodal subtitling. While performance and bias have been studied extensively in the single-modality regime, it is unknown how new modalities affect this, even though they produce biases in humans. We therefore propose the first bias evaluation of multimodal speech recognition, where we create videos pairing different faces with the same audio using lip-sync, and measure changes in speech transcription accuracy. We find large quality-of-service differences across mWhisper-Flamingo and Gemini models, with drops of up to 4.05 word error rate points, across self-declared gender, ethnicity, and their intersection. Our findings point to a priority for developers to evaluate, fix, and communicate such limitations, as providing more signals through additional modalities is not necessarily better, and may even lead to biased outcomes.

PersonaAgent: Retrieval-Augmented Transaction Anomaly Scoring with Refreshable Multi-Entity Persona Memory

原文摘要

In large-scale payment networks, entities (card, merchant, etc.) and their interactions play a key role in transaction anomaly detection. However, transaction patterns between different entities usually change more frequently than the production model refresh schedule. Meanwhile, entity embedding tables suffer from high-cardinality and sparse interaction issues. To resolve the above challenges, we present PersonaAgent, an agentic transaction anomaly detection framework which represents the latest entity behavior signals as personas and saves them in a refreshable memory. Offline, a weekly scheduled batch job is used to extract the latest behavior signals and update them in the memory. At inference time, a lightweight adapter retrieves the corresponding entity behavior signals of each transaction from memory and uses them to augment the base anomaly classifier's scoring. Through comprehensive benchmarking with different anomaly detection models at Visa, PersonaAgent is able to score transactions efficiently (a 1,000-transaction CPU batch in 1-2 ms), lifting the PR-AUC by 0.65-6.58% and the production business metric by 8.93-14.24% relatively in deployment.

Gradient Boosting for Efficient Rank Discovery in Tensor Network Kernel Machines

Albert Saiapin, Kim Batselier

原文摘要

Tensor network kernel machines (TNKMs) combine nonlinear features with low-rank tensor representations to model complex relationships efficiently. However, selecting an appropriate tensor rank remains challenging, as conventional rank-search methods require training multiple candidate models, increasing computational costs. In this work, we focus on a canonical polyadic (CP) tensor network parameterization and propose GB-CPKM, a gradient boosting framework that builds a higher-capacity predictor by sequentially adding fixed-rank learners. This approach provides a new perspective on rank selection by incrementally increasing model capacity, with ensemble size selected based on validation performance rather than through explicit rank search. Experiments on real-world regression benchmarks show that GB-CPKM trains up to 6x faster and uses up to 2x less peak memory than a conventional rank-selection method based on cross-validation, while achieving comparable predictive performance. These results highlight the potential of gradient boosting to improve the computational efficiency and scalability of tensor-network learning.

ATHAAR: A Medieval Scientific Arabic Manuscript Dataset for Handwritten Text Recognition

Ismail El Jamiy, Khadija Msalek, Guillaume Loizelet, Farah Benamara, Nabil Hathout

原文摘要

Despite recent progress in handwritten text recognition, medieval Arabic scientific manuscripts remain an open challenge for current vision-language models (VLMs) due to cursive ligatures, variable diacritization, and more importantly the lack of training data. This paper aims to address this gap, by proposing the first annotation guidelines dedicated to the transcription of scientific Arabic manuscripts inspired by textual criticism, a well-established approach to historical text editing. We then propose, ATHAAR, a new dataset manually annotated following this guideline. Unlike previous resources in the field, ATHAAR varies both witnesses of the same text, calligraphic styles, and content to deal with texts but also numerals. Relying on state-of-the-art VLMs, we finally design a set of experiments to study models transfer across scripts, chapters, and treatises. Our findings highlight the limitations of current systems when faced with the specificities of ancient scientific texts.

SAE Interprets MoE: Sparse AutoEncoders Reveal That MoE Experts Exhibit Human-Interpretable Fine-Grained Specialization

Anyuan Zhuo, Shaohua Zhang, Yuan Lin, Pinyan Lu

原文摘要

Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models route each token to a few of many experts, yet what an individual expert is responsible for remains unsettled. Existing analyses count how often an expert is selected on domain-labeled corpora, an instrument that fixes the taxonomy in advance, stays coarse, and records selection rather than contribution. We instead study specialization in feature space by training a sparse autoencoder (SAE) on the output of an MoE layer. Since this output is a router-weighted sum of expert outputs and the SAE encoder is affine, the pre-activation of every latent decomposes exactly over the experts. Aggregated over a corpus, this gives each expert a dominant set of latents whose activation it principally drives. On layers 4, 30 and 46 of Qwen3-30B-A3B, contribution is far more concentrated than gating, most latents have only one or two dominators, and the overlap between dominant sets concentrates on a few expert pairs. Auto-interpreting these sets reveals a division of labor below coarse domains, with distinct experts for Java and front-end web code, or for geometry and for arithmetic and polynomials, while the coarse domains themselves take very unequal numbers of experts. Our SAEs and code are available at https://github.com/Bytedance-Seed/SAE-Interprets-MoE.

Less is More: Compact-Token Masked Feature Prediction for Skeleton Representation Learning

Jeonghyeok Do, Yun Chen, Geunhyuk Youk, Munchurl Kim

原文摘要

Current skeleton representation learning paradigms face distinct limitations: Contrastive Learning (CL) often overlooks fine-grained motion details, while Masked Auto-Encoders (MAE) rely on coordinate-level reconstruction. This reconstruction inherently demands dense token sequences and heavy decoders, wasting pre-training computation on discarded components and forcing downstream inference to process dense token grids. To resolve these bottlenecks, we propose SLiM (Skeleton Less is More), a compact-token framework that unifies masked feature prediction and contrastive learning via a shared encoder. By shifting the objective from raw coordinate reconstruction to decoder-free, teacher-guided feature prediction, SLiM breaks the reliance on dense tokenization and enables effective learning with a highly compact token grid. Crucially, to prevent trivial shortcut learning arising from strong inter-joint dependencies of human, we introduce Semantic Tube Masking together with Skeleton-Aware Augmentations to enforce deep skeletal-temporal reasoning and anatomical consistency. Extensive experiments across multiple downstream protocols demonstrate that SLiM achieves state-of-the-art performance while structurally reducing inference computation by 7.89$\times$ compared to dense-token MAE baselines.

Value or Attention: Investigating Layer-wise Relevance Propagation for Graph Attention Networks

Ken Schreiber, René P. Klausen, Sebastian Lapuschkin, Wojciech Samek, Jonas Naujoks

原文摘要

Graph Attention Networks (GATs) are increasingly used in domains where scientists need to read a model's reasoning, from medicine to materials science, yet the routing they learn remains opaque to most explainers. Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (LRP) follows the model's computation, but in an attention layer the relevance reaching a node is the sum of two mechanically different quantities: its content relevance through the value path and its routing relevance through the attention path. Existing rules either drop one or add them into a single number. We write a single product rule with free weights on the two factors that recovers current approaches as special cases. The value path measures what content a node supplied against a zero baseline; the attention path measures how the node shaped what was passed relative to its neighborhood, and its sign records whether the node's features moved the gating the way the prediction demanded. On a ground-truth classification task, we show that the same node receives negative, positive and near-zero relevance under three settings of the rule. The separated relevance maps yield a hypothesis about the model: it gains by not reading that node. We give reading rules for both paths and argue that they should be interpreted separately.

MUSS: A Multi-scale and Sequence-based Model for Single-cell Gene Regulation

Kangjie Zheng, Amirhossein Vahidi, Liying Jin, Joseph Clarke, Vijaya Baskar MS, Connor Rogerson, Mengji Zhang, Muzlifah Haniffa 等 10 位作者

原文摘要

Modeling gene regulation in single cells requires jointly representing DNA sequence, chromatin accessibility, and gene expression across regulatory scales. Sequence-based models capture DNA-level regulatory grammar but often lack cell-level resolution, whereas many single-cell omics models represent genes and peaks as fixed-vocabulary tokens without their underlying sequence. Here, we present MUSS, a sequence-based multi-scale model for single-cell gene regulation that preserves both DNA-level and cell-level resolution. MUSS derives peak- and gene-level representations from DNA using a frozen pre-trained sequence encoder and integrates them through peak-peak self-attention and distance-biased peak-gene interactions. Peak masked language modeling followed by training on paired scATAC-seq and scRNA-seq aligns these representations with cell-specific regulatory states. Across gene expression prediction, enhancer-gene linking, motif-guided regulatory prioritization, and zero-shot cell clustering, MUSS achieves strong performance against sequence-based and single-cell omics baselines. It further predicts expression for genes and peaks unseen during task training. These results support sequence-grounded, multi-scale representations for decoding cell-type-specific regulatory programs. Code, datasets, and model checkpoints are available at https://github.com/Lotfollahi-lab/MUSS_neurips26.

Learning Lane-Structured Conditioning Fields for Online HD Mapping

原文摘要

High-definition maps provide critical structural information for downstream autonomous driving tasks. Recent methods increasingly rely on external priors to improve prediction accuracy and robustness. Yet, existing prior representations expose a trade-off: dense rasters are easy to integrate but ignore certain map geometric properties, while sparse vectors preserve geometric structure but require dedicated encoders and are difficult to plug into existing architectures. Moreover, external priors can be inaccurate, costly to acquire, or difficult to maintain, motivating a structural representation that can provide geometric guidance while remaining learnable and broadly applicable. We address this limitation with the Lane Field, a dense BEV-aligned geometric representation that encodes local lane structure at each spatial location and can be either predicted from onboard observations or constructed from external map priors. Building on this representation, we introduce a plug-and-play framework that enhances online HD mapping through two complementary mechanisms: BEV feature modulation, which injects lane-structured cues into latent BEV features, and deformable attention guidance, which steers query sampling toward the underlying lane geometry. We primarily evaluate our method on OpenLane-V2, showing that conditioning BEV features and guiding deformable attention with local lane geometry enables our framework to consistently improve existing methods and achieve state-of-the-art performance on lane segment perception. Linguistic boundaries emerge from pressure-constrained processing dynamics

Rui He, Philipp Homan, Wolfram Hinzen

原文摘要

Human cognition organizes continuous experience into bounded units while maintaining continuity across them. Linguistic elements are also organized into bounded structural units such as words and phrases, with sentence marking the final bound of a grammatical construction process. How do such boundaries emerge? We propose boundaries emerge from interacting demands to maintain unresolved dependencies, integrate completed relations, and update semantic context, with structural completion allowing but not determining closure. First, in a generative simulation without predefined boundary positions or constituent labels, these demands produced sentence-like segment-length distributions and distinct characteristic timescales, with structural completion allowing but not determining closure. Near boundaries, unresolved dependency load declined, integration cost peaked, and accumulated pressure reset. Then, we tested whether same demands predicted human listeners' boundary choices during comprehension. Listeners were more likely to mark boundaries with fewer unresolved dependencies, higher integration cost and semantic mismatch, and elevated preceding memory load, beyond syntactic and prosodic cues. Third, in naturalistic self-paced reading, sentence-final slowing coincided with declining memory load and increasing integration cost and semantic mismatch, broadly consistent with the simulation. Processing same narratives with a large language model revealed increased local intrinsic dimensionality and straighter hidden-state trajectories at sentence endings, followed by larger representational updates. Boundary explained additional variation in reading time and hidden-state geometry beyond processing demands, but considerably less in next-token surprisal. Together, these findings suggest linguistic boundaries emerge as discrete manifestations of transitions in continuous processing dynamics.

Winding-Pack Quench Simulation of Stellarator Coils: Hydraulic Field-Network Coupling and Transverse Heat Conduction in OPENSC$^2$

Laura A. M. D'Angelo, Felix Warmer

原文摘要

Quench propagation in cable-in-conduit conductors is thermo-hydraulically driven, yet existing 1D models treat a conductor as one straight adiabatic cable with prescribed pressure and mass-flow boundaries, so secondary quenches and flow redistribution between windings cannot be resolved. We extend the open-source code OPENSC$^2$ with transverse heat conduction between turns, a 3D field resolving the current-sharing temperature, induced losses, and a lumped hydraulic network coupled to the conductors by a mass-flow formulation. Validated against the 2006 W7-X coil tests, it predicts the quench site, cuts the outlet-temperature error from 55 K to 12 K, and reproduces the neighboring windings' heating as flow reversal through the coil inlet.

DictLLM: Post-training Compression of Large Language Model with Dictionary Kernels

Jinho Park, Se Young Chun, Mingoo Seok

原文摘要

Efficient deployment of large language models (LLMs) on mobile devices requires balancing performance with compute and memory constraints. Post-training compression is an effective approach to managing this trade-off, while requiring much less computation than in-training counterparts. We propose DictLLM, a dictionary-based compression scheme in which weight matrices within grouped layers are decomposed into a shared dictionary and layer-specific sparse coefficients, directly obtained from a pre-trained model without further training. Specifically, we cast DictLLM as a four-step post-training optimization. First, we obtain shared dictionaries via singular value decomposition (SVD) of input-scaled weight matrices, amortizing rank across grouped layers; second, we sparsify the layer-specific coefficients to the target compression ratio using a dictionary-aware Hessian; and third, we refine the dictionaries given the resulting sparse coefficients. Finally, we aggressively quantize both components using factor-specific Hessian information: input covariance for the dictionaries and the dictionary-aware Hessian for the coefficients. The resulting representation reduces memory footprint by storing a single shared dictionary per layer group, along with sparse layer-specific coefficients. On language modeling and zero-shot reasoning benchmarks, DictLLM consistently outperforms existing post-training low-rank compression methods and pushes the Pareto frontier between model size and performance. DictLLM compresses the original LLaMA-7B model by 5.1x with only a 2.9-point increase in WikiText-2 perplexity, achieving a 3.6x higher compression ratio than the state-of-the-art low-rank method.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics-Aware Industrial Anomaly Detection and Reasoning

S-Wei Chen, Siangyu Yang, Yi-Chen Jan, Chun-Yi Lee, Shao-Yuan Lo

原文摘要

Industrial Anomaly Detection (IAD) is a long-established problem that aims to detect defects in industrial products during manufacturing for quality control. Most existing studies focus on static visual patterns as the basis for detection. However, in real manufacturing environments, many anomalies are dynamics-based, such as irregular movements that cannot be perceived from static cues alone. We observe that even recent Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM)-based approaches fall short in identifying such dynamic anomalies due to limited temporal modeling capability. To address this, we introduce MUSTARD: MUltimodal SpatioTemporal Anomaly Reasoning and Detection, a framework that equips MLLMs with fine-grained spatiotemporal dynamics awareness for detecting and reasoning about dynamics-based defects. MUSTARD introduces optical-flow-guided keyframe selection and augmented modalities to capture critical motion irregularities through local motion patterns and global dynamic evolution. Its normal pattern-based reasoning pipeline requires only a few normal reference samples as the detection basis, avoiding any model updates. This enables efficient adaptation across various products and provides high decision interpretability. MUSTARD is the first MLLM-based framework for dynamics-based IAD. Experiments demonstrate its superior performance in detecting spatiotemporal anomalies and providing plausible explanations. The code will be made publicly available.

Executable but Unfaithful: Mock Object, Stub, and Assertion Generation by LLMs and Coding Agents

原文摘要

Mocking is a foundational practice in unit testing, enabling developers to isolate the code under test by replacing real dependencies with simulated alternatives. Automating the generation of mock objects, stubs, and mock assertions has been a long-standing research goal. However, capture-and-replay approaches rely on recording the runtime behavior of actual dependencies. Evolutionary approaches such as StubCoder overcome this requirement but constrain generation to predefined symbol pools. Large language models (LLMs) and coding agents offer an alternative by generating mocking artifacts from source code without requiring recorded dependency executions or fixed symbol pools. Yet, no systematic study has evaluated their capabilities across all three artifact types. To address this gap, we construct MockBench, a benchmark comprising 165 mock artifact generation tasks from real-world Java and Python projects, with validated reference mock objects, stubs, and mock assertions. We evaluate six LLMs and three coding agents in terms of executability, behavior fidelity, and interaction-fault detection capability, complemented by comparisons with existing tools and sensitivity analysis. Experimental results show that LLMs and coding agents indeed have been the state-of-the-art techniques in mock-based testing. More specifically, compared with LLMs, coding agents substantially improve executability, while these gains do not consistently translate into higher behavior fidelity or better interaction-fault detection. Furthermore, we analyze 660 failures from LLMs and coding agents, and identify ten error types across the three artifact categories, revealing behavioral deviations that passing tests can conceal. Our findings highlight the challenges of mock artifact generation and provide practical guidance for both developers and researchers.

Differencing the Diffusion Trajectory toward Uncertain Components for Time Series Forecasting

Chen Su, Yuanhe Tian, Yan Song

原文摘要

Diffusion models have become a widely used framework for probabilistic time series forecasting, modeling the distribution of future values given an observed history. In time series forecasting, however, the future continues the observed history, creating an asymmetry the standard diffusion process leaves unaddressed, with slowly-varying content largely determined by the observed continuity while higher-frequency dynamics carry most of the residual uncertainty. Existing diffusion-based forecasters decouple this asymmetry through an external rule before generation, leaving the corruption trajectory blind to which parts of the target the history can already anchor. We propose DiffDiff, a diffusion framework that embeds this predictability asymmetry into the diffusion trajectory itself, so that a single end-to-end diffusion process becomes aware of which parts of the target the history can already anchor. DiffDiff makes the forward operator step-dependent so that the noisy intermediate state progressively shifts from the target itself toward its second-order differenced structure, while a conditioning pathway supplies the denoiser with both value-domain and differential history information balanced by a stage-adaptive gate at each diffusion step. The terminal distribution approaches a standard Gaussian, preserving compatibility with existing samplers. On seven benchmarks across four prediction horizons, DiffDiff outperforms six diffusion baselines, while our analyses show that its trajectory reallocates modeling effort according to history predictability and improves distributional fidelity.

原文摘要

Chasing convex function has attracted much attention in recent years, which can be formulated as a game between a learner and an adversary. In each round, the adversary reveals a convex function, and the learner selects a decision and incurs a hitting cost and a movement cost for changing its decision. The performance of the learner is measured by the \emph{competitive ratio}, which compares its cumulative cost with that of an optimal offline decision sequence. For Euclidean movement, existing upper and lower bounds for $κ$-well-conditioned functions exhibit a polynomial gap. For squared Euclidean movement, dimension-free competitive guarantees have been established under quadratic growth, but the optimal competitive ratio remains unclear. In this paper, we establish optimal dimension-free competitive ratios for convex function chasing under two types of movement costs. For Euclidean movement, we propose Clipped Proximal Descent (CPD), which combines a balanced proximal step with a clipped correction toward the current minimizer. CPD achieves an $O(κ^{1/3})$ competitive ratio for smooth convex functions satisfying quadratic growth, improving the previous $O(\sqrtκ)$ upper bound and matching the existing $Ω(κ^{1/3})$ lower bound. For squared Euclidean movement, we establish the exact optimal dimension-free competitive ratio for convex functions satisfying quadratic growth. Our result is based on a new tight competitive analysis of Regularized Online Balanced Descent (R-OBD) and a matching lower bound against randomized algorithms.

Quantum Advantage in Local Certification of Graph Properties

Benjamín Jáuregui, Masayuki Miyamoto

原文摘要

Local certification allows network vertices to verify global properties using certificates from an untrusted prover and communication with their neighbors. Its complexity is the maximum certificate size at any vertex. Fraigniaud et al. (ITCS 2021) introduced the distributed quantum Merlin-Arthur (dQMA) model and proved an exponential quantum advantage for distributed equality, measured in input-string length. We resolve a question of Hasegawa, Kundu, and Nishimura (PODC 2024) by establishing unconditional exponential and polynomial quantum advantages for graph properties, which depend only on network topology, with complexity measured in the number $n$ of vertices. For every fixed integer $μ\ge 1$, we construct a graph property admitting a one-round dQMA protocol with $O(μ\log n)$-qubit certificates and messages, whereas every $μ$-round distributed Merlin-Arthur (dMA) protocol requires $Ω(n/(μ\log^2 n))$-bit certificates. We also give a one-round dQMA protocol for graph symmetry, the existence of a nontrivial automorphism, with $\widetilde{O}(n^{5/3})$-qubit certificates. This yields a polynomial advantage over one-round dMA protocols, for which an $Ω(n^2)$-bit certificate lower bound is known.

Leave It Better Than Found: Value-Guided Cooperation in Sequential Tasks

Mario Gomez Andreu, Michael Amir, Antonio Marino, Tianxu An, Marco Hutter, Amanda Prorok

原文摘要

We consider the problem of sequential task continuation, where one robot acts in a workspace that has been affected by a previous robot. Current approaches in multi-robot cooperation rely heavily on co-training or co-optimization, assumingthat the robots have access to collective interaction data during the policy training or planning process. However, as increasingly varied robotic embodiments and policies are deployed and operate in the same real-world environment, learning policies for cooperation becomes infeasible due to the combinatorial explosion of possible robot combinations that need to be accounted for. To address this challenge, this paper considers the problem of ad hoc sequential cooperation between robots that have never before operated together in a shared environment. We demonstrate that robots can explicitly communicate their environmental preferences through sharing their value functions, enabling coordination without the need for prior joint training. To ground this exchange and prevent overconfidence in out-of-distribution states, we further introduce a k-nearest neighbors (KNN)- based uncertainty filter. Our method yields an increase of up to 48.5 pp compared with naive or even selfish agents, in task success rates across simulated and real-world experiments, demonstrating that value function transmission between agents is useful not merely as an internal learning tool, but as an effective basis for ad hoc coordination. One Method Does Not Fit All: A Large-Scale Benchmark of Imputation Methods for Single-Cell RNA Sequencing Data

原文摘要

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) enables gene expression profiling at cellular resolution but is inherently affected by sparsity caused by dropout events, where expressed genes are recorded as zeros due to technical limitations. These dropout events distort gene expression distributions and compromise downstream analyses. To address this challenge, numerous traditional and deep learning (DL)-based imputation methods have been developed to detect dropout events and impute their true expression values. However, evaluations of these methods have largely been restricted to specific downstream tasks and limited datasets, and large-scale systematic comparisons under standardized benchmarking conditions are lacking. To fill this gap, we present a comprehensive framework that evaluates 16 imputation methods across 10 experimental protocols, 6 downstream tasks, and 30 benchmark datasets. Through extensive experimentation, we systematically investigate the strengths, limitations, and task-specific performance of these methods under consistent evaluation settings. Our results show that traditional methods perform relatively better across a wide range of downstream tasks, whereas DL-based methods are more variable. In addition, strong performance in numerical gene expression recovery does not necessarily translate into improved biological interpretability in downstream analyses, including cell clustering, differential expression analysis, marker gene analysis, trajectory analysis, and cell type annotation. Furthermore, performance varies substantially across datasets, protocols, and downstream analyses, with no single method consistently outperforming the others. Our findings provide practical guidance for selecting imputation methods tailored to specific analytical objectives and underscore the importance of task-specific evaluation in scRNA-seq data analysis.

XION: Interpreting Network Traffic Anomalies via Dependency Violations

Federica Uccello, Simin Nadjm-Tehrani

原文摘要

Current research on security monitoring is increasingly focusing on machine-learning-based approaches, but caveats remain. In addition to huge computational overhead, one concern is the lack of insights into ``why" alerts are raised. Existing interpretability approaches rely on feature attribution methods that ignore dependencies among features or on causal modeling that requires extensive domain knowledge or computational resources. This work proposes XION, a method for modeling relationships among network-flow features based on benign traffic only. During detection, anomalies are identified through violations of expected feature dependencies. Further, XION supports post-alert analysis by identifying which feature relationships break, when they break along the attack timeline, and how dependency violations evolve relatively to other identified violations. XION is evaluated on standard IDS datasets and compared against an Isolation Forest (IF) baseline across multiple attack scenarios, including both volumetric and stealthier attacks. Results show that XION matches or exceeds IF recall in all evaluated scenarios, while requiring up to 7$\times$ less inference time. At the post-alert stage, the dependency violation analysis reveals temporal and structural patterns consistent with known attack behaviors, and is further evaluated against SHAP-based feature attribution of IF alerts. Together, these findings confirm that attacks indeed disrupt feature dependencies learned from benign traffic, and that these disruptions provide additional information for understanding an alert.

Diameter bounds for complexes that are close to flag or close to normal

Bruno Benedetti, Giuliamaria Menara

原文摘要

The Hirsch problem asks how large the diameter of the dual graph of a simplicial complex can be, in terms of its number of vertices. For normal complexes, the classical bounds are the Larman-Barnette bound, which is linear for fixed dimension, the Kalai-Kleitman bound, which is quasi-polynomial, and the Adiprasito-Benedetti bound n-d, which however holds only for flag complexes. After sharpening the Larman-Barnette and the Kalai-Kleitman bounds, we study how the three bounds deteriorate when flagness or normality is weakened. We give three ways to quantify the distance from flagness, and in each case we bound the diameter in a way that interpolates between the Adiprasito-Benedetti and the Larman-Barnette bounds. We also quantify the distance from normality by a parameter q, and obtain a bound that is a polynomial of degree q in n. Finally, we conjecture a statement on flag layered families that would imply an interpolation between the Adiprasito-Benedetti and the Kalai-Kleitman bounds.

Can an LLM Actually Reason and Program about Neural Network's Weights or is it just memorization on steroids? Exploring "Weight-Space Programming"

Nazmus Sakib Ahmed

原文摘要

Large language models (LLMs) have recently been reported to read and write the raw weights of neural networks directly, a capability termed weight-space programming. We ask whether the reading side of this capability reflects reasoning about weight flows or a combination of local arithmetic at the network's edges and memorized priors over public datasets. We test Claude Opus 5.5 on small convolutional networks of about 125,000 parameters trained on five image datasets, providing every weight as plain text with no tools, no forward passes, and no dataset or class names. The model performs accurate local calculations: batch-normalization statistics lead it to infer about three optimizer steps on networks stopped after three updates, and output-layer sign patterns recover the vehicle/animal split of CIFAR-10. The sessions report reading the first and last layers closely and sampling the middle, and several claims built on partial tracing fail verification, although we did not run a direct forward-pass test. Semantic judgments lean on familiar datasets: the model names CIFAR-10 for CIFAR-10 networks but also for all three fast-food networks, relabels KMNIST as MNIST, reads a 99.57%-accurate SAT-6 network as CIFAR-10 animal photos, and calls "frog" the output favored by a feature that fires most on trees. Permuting CIFAR-10's labels preserves the output split at the new indices, but every class pair the model interprets is then wrong, indicating reliance on remembered label order. These are exploratory results from mostly single runs. We conclude that zero-shot weight reading by this model is better described as local arithmetic plus dataset priors than as weight-flow tracing, and we provide a protocol for auditing future weight-space claims.

Reward Engine: Reward-Centric Self-Evolution for Open-Ended Tool Agents

Litong Feng, Ji Qi, Yiran Cheng, Shaowu Pan, Xinyu Zhang, Qijun Li

原文摘要

Open-ended tool agents can complete the same objective through different tool paths, and their quality depends jointly on the interaction trace, environment state, and final artifacts, so such tasks rarely admit an executable ground-truth reward. The central challenge is therefore to construct a reward from existing experience that exposes the current policy's failures while remaining stationary during optimization. We introduce Reward Engine, which, like a self-motivated student, first works out what success requires and then optimizes toward it. From the task and initial trajectories, it builds a RewardPack of testcases for required correctness and rubrics for graded quality, each executed as a check that returns a judgment with evidence. The frozen RewardPack then guides the agent to revise and select its outputs, and can also serve as a reward for reinforcement learning. On WorkBuddy Bench Office and Claw-Eval, the constructed reward largely agrees with the benchmark graders, not reversing their ordering on 82.3\% and 80.5\% of candidate pairs. Used to revise executions, it raises three-run consistency ($\mathrm{Pass}^{3}$) over Baseline from 45.0\% to 54.0\% and from 78.4\% to 83.7\%.
