Extracting System Prompt of LLM Services in Complex (Agentic) Settings: Hierarchical Optimization and Reliable Evaluation Metrics

Shuaidong Li, Chenhao Lin, Xinshan Yang, Chao Shen, Yufei Chen, Zhengyu Zhao

原文摘要

System prompt is a critical intellectual property of large language model (LLM) services. To analyze its leakage, prompt extraction attacks have been extensively studied. However, we validate that existing attacks substantially degrade on recent LLM services, whose complexity has evolved in both the prompt itself and system-level constraints. Specifically, (1) system prompts become longer and more structured to contain pre-defined tool schemas, execution logic, safety guardrails, etc., and (2) only the final post-processed outputs (e.g., agent's actions) but not the raw textual response can be observed. In this paper, we address the above increased complexity by proposing Extraction with Hierarchical Optimization (ExtraHerO), which (1) decomposes the prompt extraction into a hierarchical reconstruction process with a pre-defined structural prompt template, and (2) iteratively updates the adversarial query with guidance of feedback-template differences to observe diverse outputs. In particular, we monitor the information gain of attack optimization to early stop or reset it for a good trade-off between effectiveness and efficiency. We also find that existing evaluation metrics for prompt fidelity can be misleading because they do not account for structural information. Therefore, we rely on global textual similarity and prioritize structural keywords. Moreover, we introduce a system-level metric, adversarial utility, to measure the help of prompt extraction for real-world downstream attacks. Experimental results demonstrate the consistent superiority of ExtraHerO, with average improvements of 12.5\% (fidelity), 2.3\% (functionality), and 6.0\% (adversarial utility) on chatbots, and 12.2\%, 34.3\%, and 30.5\% on agents.

LiBrA-Net: Lie-Algebraic Bilateral Affine Fields for Real-Time 4K Video Dehazing

Yongcong Wang, Chengchao Shen, Guangwei Gao, Wei Wang, Pengwen Dai, Dianjie Lu, Guijuan Zhang, Zhuoran Zheng

原文摘要

Currently, there is a gap in the field of ultra-high-definition (UHD) video dehazing due to the lack of a benchmark for evaluation. Furthermore, existing video dehazing methods cannot run on consumer-grade GPUs when processing continuous UHD sequences of 3--5 frames at a time. In this paper, we address both issues with a new benchmark and an efficient method. Our key observation is that atmospheric dehazing reduces to a per-pixel affine transform governed by the low-frequency depth field, which can be compactly encoded in bilateral grids whose prediction cost is decoupled from the output resolution. Building on this, we propose LiBrA-Net, which factorizes the spatiotemporal affine field into a spatial--color and a temporal bilateral sub-grid predicted at a fixed low resolution, fuses their coefficients in the $\mathfrak{gl}(3)$ Lie algebra under group-theoretic regularization, maps the result to invertible $GL(3)$ transforms via a Cayley parameterization, and restores high-frequency detail through a lightweight input-guided branch. We further release UHV-4K, the first paired 4K video dehazing benchmark with depth, transmission, and optical-flow annotations on every frame. Across UHV-4K, REVIDE, and HazeWorld, LiBrA-Net sets a new state of the art among compared video dehazing methods while running native 4K at 25FPS on a single GPU with only 6.12M parameters. Code is available at https://github.com/ycwang31/LiBrA-Net.

False Friends in the Shell: Unveiling the Emoticon Semantic Confusion in Large Language Models

Weipeng Jiang, Xiaoyu Zhang Nanyang Technological University, Juan Zhai University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Shiqing Ma University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Chao Shen Xi’an Jiaotong University, Yang Liu Nanyang Technological University

原文摘要

Emoticons are widely used in digital communication to convey affective intent, yet their safety implications for Large Language Models (LLMs) remain largely unexplored. In this paper, we identify emoticon semantic confusion, a vulnerability where LLMs misinterpret ASCII-based emoticons to perform unintended and even destructive actions. To systematically study this phenomenon, we develop an automated data generation pipeline and construct a dataset containing 3,757 code-oriented test cases spanning 21 meta-scenarios, four programming languages, and varying contextual complexities. Our study on six LLMs reveals that emoticon semantic confusion is pervasive, with an average confusion ratio exceeding 38%. More critically, over 90% of confused responses yield ’silent failures’, which are syntactically valid outputs but deviate from user intent, potentially leading to destructive security consequences.Furthermore, we observe that this vulnerability readily transfers to popular agent frameworks, while existing prompt-based mitigations remain largely ineffective. We call on the community to recognize this emerging vulnerability and develop effective mitigation methods to uphold the safety and reliability of human-LLM interactions.

Confidence Should Be Calibrated More Than One Turn Deep

Zhaohan Zhang, Chengzhengxu Li, Xiaoming Liu, Chao Shen Xi’an Jiaotong University, Ziquan Liu Queen Mary, University of London, Ioannis Patras

原文摘要

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly applied in high-stakes domains such as finance, healthcare, and education, where reliable multi-turn interactions with users are essential. However, existing work on confidence estimation and calibration, a major approach to building trustworthy LLM systems, largely focuses on single-turn settings and overlooks the risks and potential of multi-turn conversations. In this work, we introduce the task of multi-turn calibration to reframe calibration from a static property into a dynamic challenge central to reliable multi-turn conversation, where calibrating model confidence at each turn conditioned on the conversation history is required. We first reveal the risks of this setting: using Expected Calibration Error at turn T (ECE@T), a new metric that tracks calibration dynamics over turns, we show that user feedback (e.g., persuasion) can degrade multi-turn calibration. To address this, we propose MTCal, which minimises ECE@T via a surrogate calibration target, and further leverage calibrated confidence in ConfChat, a decoding strategy that improves both factuality and consistency of the model response in multi-turn interactions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MTCal achieves outstanding and consistent performance in multi-turn calibration, and ConfChat preserves and even enhances model performance in multi-turn interactions. Our results mark multi-turn calibration as one missing link for scaling LLM calibration toward safe, reliable, and real-world use. Can Reasoning Path still be Effective as Input? Bridging Post-Reasoning to Chain-of-Thought Compression

Chengzhengxu Li, Xiaoming Liu, Zhaohan Zhang, Shengchao Liu, Guoxin Ma, Yu Lan, Cong Wang City University of Hong Kong, Chao Shen Xi’an Jiaotong University

原文摘要

Recent developments have enabled advanced reasoning in Large Language Models (LLMs) via long Chain-of-Thought (CoT), trading efficiency during inference for performance. Existing works focus on compressing generated CoT in reasoning, which impairs the necessary information for deriving the correct answer. In this work, we propose post-reasoning, a reasoning paradigm that takes CoT as a part of context to simplify the reasoning task for LLMs. We find that post-reasoning significantly reduces the generation length of LLMs, but its effectiveness hinges on the efficiency and the reliability of the contextual CoT generation. Therefore, we propose Upfront CoT (UCoT), an efficient post-reasoning framework for CoT compression. UCoT trains a lightweight model (compressor) to provide contextual CoT in form of soft tokens and trains the LLM (executor) to leverage this contextual CoT for producing the final answer. Extensive experiments show that UCoT maintains the powerful reasoning ability of executor while significantly reducing the length of CoT. It is worth mentioning that when applying UCoT to the Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct model, the usage of tokens on GSM8K dataset is reduced by 50%, while the performance is 3.08% higher than that of the state-of-the-art (SOTA) method. The code is available at: https://github.com/czx-li/UCoT.
