Does Scaling Toward AGI Depend on What System-1 Lets System-2 Execute?

Progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI) has largely relied on scaling a resource-intensive executive, System-2, through larger models, more data and compute, longer reasoning, and more agents. We ask whether the next stage may come instead from co-designing it with System-1, a lightweight, semantically aware predictor that evaluates candidate interactions before execution, so that System-2 acts only on those worth their cost. Our answer is a qualified yes. We study \textit{conditional interaction}, a predict--gate--execute--update loop: System-1 estimates each candidate's utility, System-2 executes those admitted by an adaptive threshold, and the outcomes update System-1. The loop spans training, test-time reasoning, adaptive decision-making, and agentic tool use, with utility and cost defined by the application. Under ideal screening and equal execution costs, execution compute falls by a factor approaching $1/ρ_u$, where $ρ_u$ is the density of utility-relevant interactions (cost-weighted when costs differ); prediction errors, exploration, and distribution shift reduce the saving. We bound selection regret by predictor error and the utility margin. These results motivate our central hypothesis: $ρ_u$ is a measurable coordinate of scaling efficiency and makes informative compute a better description of scaling than total compute.

CHI-Bench: Can AI Agents Automate End-to-End, Long-Horizon, Policy-Rich Healthcare Workflows?

Haolin Chen, Deon Metelski, Leon Qi, Tao Xia, Joonyul Lee, Steve Brown, Kevin Riley, Frank Wang 等 33 位作者

End-to-end automation of realistic healthcare operations stresses three capabilities underrepresented in current benchmarks: policy density, decisions must be grounded in a large library of medical, insurance, and operational rules; Multi-role composition: a single task requires the agent to play multiple roles with handoffs; and multilateral interaction: intermediate workflow steps are multi-turn dialogs, such as peer-to-peer review and patient outreach. We introduce $χ$-Bench, a benchmark of long-horizon healthcare workflows across three domains: provider prior authorization, payer utilization management, and care management. Each task hands the agent a clinical case in a high-fidelity simulator of 20 healthcare apps exposed via 87 MCP tools, which it must drive to a terminal status through tool calls and writing the role's artifacts, guided by a 1,290+ document managed-care operations handbook skill. Across 30 agent harness/models configurations, the best agent resolves only 28.0% of tasks, no agent clears 20% on strict pass^3, and executing all tasks in a single session slumps the performance to 3.8%. These results raise the hypothesis that similar gaps are likely to surface in other policy-dense, role-composed, irreversible enterprise domains.

Visual Autoregressive Generation with Next Token Imagination

Ruihang Jiang, Zongyao Zhao, Zhaolin Wang, Yuanwei Liu, Xiatian Zhu

The space of possible visual content is enormous, and arguably unbounded. Any training set, however large, therefore covers only a tiny fraction of it. Yet generative models are typically trained to fit only the images they are given. In visual autoregressive (AR) generation, for example, each token is predicted from the preceding ground-truth (GT) tokens and supervised solely by the GT next token. Confining learning to observed data in this way limits how much of the visual distribution a model can capture. In this work, we hypothesize that letting a model imagine beyond its training data, by exploring plausible visual realizations it has never observed, can ease this limitation. We use visual AR generation as a proof of concept, since its fixed, discrete token space makes imagination easier to steer and constrain. We propose Next Token Imagination (NTI), a method that allows the model to explore beyond the GT next token, subject to a carefully designed criterion that keeps this imagination bounded by the underlying visual distribution. Extensive experiments on ImageNet show that NTI substantially and consistently improves the fidelity of generated images, approaching state-of-the-art diffusion and AR models while using a smaller model and lower training cost.

Lost in Translation: Investigating Systematic Discrepancies between Parallel English and Chinese Names of American Chinese Restaurants

Hang Jiang, Nanxi Liu, Tiantian Wang, Cassandra Overney, Rukun Zhang, Artemisia Luk, Diyi Yang, Deb Roy 等 9 位作者

Given that the Chinese are one of the oldest ethnic groups to immigrate to the US, their cuisine have become central to the US dining scene and an interesting avenue to study how Chinese immigrants have culturally adapted into American life. In that regard, previous research has focused on analyzing the English names that Chinese restaurants adopt, e.g., finding the use of familiar and typical words. To investigate how Chinese immigrants have culturally integrated in the US depending on social, geographic and demographic contexts, we investigate in this work the under-explored relationship between the Chinese and English names of American Chinese restaurants. Specifically, we conduct a study on 3,172 Chinese restaurants (10% of the total on Google Maps) sampled across the US. We present 8-dimension name frames to capture the underlying meanings behind names and create the NameFrames dataset containing 884 annotated parallel Chinese/English names. We also built an NLP pipeline to analyze the semantic discrepancies between names with both frame-based and embedding-based distance metrics. Our frame analysis shows that English names more often emphasize Location and Specialty, while Chinese names more often emphasize Positivity and Ambiance. Furthermore, we observe that for Chinese restaurants located in urban areas, those in counties with a higher concentration of Chinese population, or those that are relatively new, the discrepancies between the English and Chinese names are noticeably larger. Finally, interviews with 10 Chinese restaurant owners reveal additional interesting insights regarding naming conventions.

The “Knowledge–Behavior Gap” in Cultural Taboo Safety of Large Language Models

Ying He, Sihang Jiang Fudan University, Xingzhou Chen, Zhouhong Gu Xiaohongshu, Yiwei Gu, Minggui HE Huawei Technologies Ltd., Shimin Tao, Mahongxia 等 9 位作者

Cultural taboo safety is essential for deploying large language models (LLMs), as culturally insensitive outputs may cause offense or even social harm. However, existing cultural benchmarks primarily assess cultural knowledge or values biases, while overlooking whether LLMs can recognize and respect cultural taboos, especially when taboos are implicitly hidden in seemingly harmless questions. Besides, cultural taboos are implicit, and context-dependent, thus poss unique challenges for reliable evaluation. To address these gaps, we introduce CulShield, the first public benchmark dedicated to evaluating and improving the cultural taboo safety of LLMs. CulShield spans 77 countries and regions, and includes over 2,020 taboos. It evaluates models along both explicit knowledge and implicit behaviors.Experiments on several advanced LLMs (e.g., GPT-4o-mini, Gemini-2.5-pro) reveal a clear “knowledge-behavior gap”: models often fail to apply known taboos during interaction. We further show that variations in linguistic context can significantly affect LLMs’ cultural taboo safety. Code and data is accessible here: https://anonymous.4open.science/r/CulShield-7A0E.

Immediate Inference: The Missing Foundation in Large Language Model Logical Reasoning

Sihang Jiang Fudan University, Zhiyu Lu Fudan University, Keyi Wang, Jiaqing Liang Fudan University, Yanghua Xiao Fudan University, Xiaojun Meng Large Model Data Technology Lab, Huawei Technologies Ltd., Jiansheng Wei

While extensive research has evaluated LLMs on complex reasoning tasks, the foundational building blocks of logical reasoning remain underexplored. We introduce IIBench, a benchmark evaluating immediate inference (elementary operations over categorical propositions). Our evaluation reveals that even SoTA models exhibit systematic deficiencies in immediate inference, and establishes immediate inference as foundational: it mediates approximately 40% of the effect on syllogistic reasoning, with near-perfect correlation ( = 0.98) across reasoning benchmarks. Our analysis reveals that models lack robust operator grounding, oscillating between structural reasoning and surface pattern matching with inconsistent handling of quantifiers and negation.

Not Every Tree Is a Forest: Benchmarking Forest Types from Satellite Remote Sensing

Yuchang Jiang, Maxim Neumann

Developing accurate and reliable models for forest types mapping is critical to support efforts for halting deforestation and for biodiversity conservation (such as European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)). This work introduces ForTy, a benchmark for global-scale FORest TYpes mapping using multi-temporal satellite data1. The benchmark comprises 200,000 time series of image patches, each consisting of Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1, climate, and elevation data. Each time series captures variations at monthly or seasonal cadence. Per-pixel annotations, including forest types and other land use classes, support image segmentation tasks. Unlike most existing land use products that often categorize all forest areas into a single class, our benchmark differentiates between three forest types classes: natural forest, planted forest, and tree crops. By leveraging multiple public data sources, we achieve global coverage with this benchmark. We evaluate the forest types dataset using several baseline models, including convolution neural networks and transformer-based models. Additionally, we propose a novel transformer-based model specifically designed to handle multi-modal, multi-temporal satellite data for forest types mapping. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model surpasses the baseline models in performance.
