Human demonstrations offer an efficient and scalable source of data for dexterous robot manipulation, but differences in sensing and hand morphology complicate the transfer of contact-rich interactions. We present TouchBridge, a hardware--software co-designed framework for human-to-robot data transformation. A wearable human demonstration interface and a corresponding robot interface establish cross-embodiment correspondence in visual and fingertip tactile sensing. We introduce Tac-Retarget, a tactile-conditioned retargeting method that uses measured contact to align fingertip contact patches and preserve their spatial relations within and across hands. Unlike object-aware or simulation-based transfer pipelines, Tac-Retarget requires no object mesh, object-pose estimate, or physics simulation for retargeting, enabling direct and scalable conversion of human demonstrations into robot-domain training data. Combined with visual synthesis and camera-anchored action conversion, TouchBridge produces robot-domain demonstrations for fine-tuning a pretrained vision-language-action (VLA) model. Across four real-world contact-rich tasks, policies fine-tuned solely on TouchBridge-converted human demonstrations achieve a 72.5% average success rate, compared with 77.5% using an equal number of teleoperated robot demonstrations, while human demonstration collection is 7.0x faster. Under the same policy and training setup, Tac-Retarget outperforms DexPilot and UniDex by 25.0 and 42.5 percentage points, respectively.

TaskFrame: Connecting Task-Level Planning with Frame-Level Control for Game Agents

Guangzhi Wang, Junfu Pu, Yiran Wang, Xingyilang Yin, Honghao Chen, Cheng Cheng, Lingen Li, Yinan Zhou 等 13 位作者

Building general game agents requires both high-level task reasoning and low-latency action control in rapidly changing visual environments. These capabilities favor models with substantially different computational profiles, making them difficult to realize within a single model. In this work, we present TaskFrame, a hierarchical planner-controller framework that connects task-level planning with frame-level keyboard-and-mouse control. A vision-language task planner decomposes a high-level goal into an ordered sequence of atomic instructions and is optimized through supervised learning and dependency-aware GRPO. The hidden states of special goal tokens that terminate each atomic instruction provide continuous goal embeddings that are cached and reused across control steps. A causal Transformer controller combines the embedding of the active goal with recent observations to predict discrete keyboard and mouse-button actions and continuous camera motion at every game step. We train the system in three stages: planner training, controller pretraining, and joint alignment. Experiments in Minecraft show that TaskFrame is competitive with general-purpose vision-language models on instruction decomposition, and that in closed-loop evaluation the agent achieves a higher combat success rate than the evaluated baselines.

Asymmetric Flow Models

Hansheng Chen, Jan Ackermann, Minseo Kim, Gordon Wetzstein, Leonidas Guibas

Flow-based generation in high-dimensional pixel spaces is difficult because velocity prediction requires modeling high-dimensional noise, even when data has strong low-rank structure. We present Asymmetric Flow Modeling (AsymFlow), a rank-asymmetric velocity parameterization that restricts noise prediction to a low-rank subspace while keeping data prediction full-dimensional. From this asymmetric prediction, AsymFlow analytically recovers the full-dimensional velocity, leaving the network architecture and the standard flow-matching training and sampling procedures unchanged. On ImageNet 256$\times$256, AsymFlow achieves a leading 1.57 FID, outperforming prior DiT/JiT-like pixel diffusion models by a large margin. AsymFlow also provides the first-ever route for finetuning pretrained latent flow models into pixel-space models: aligning the low-rank pixel subspace to the latent space gives a seamless initialization that preserves the latent model's high-level semantics and structure, so finetuning mainly improves low-level mismatches rather than relearning pixel generation. We show that the pixel AsymFlow model finetuned from FLUX.2 klein 9B establishes a new state of the art for pixel-space text-to-image generation, beating its latent base on HPSv3, DPG-Bench, and GenEval while qualitatively showing substantially improved visual realism.

Riemannian Deep Learning: Modules, Networks, and Geometries

Ziheng Chen

Deep neural networks on manifold-valued representations have attracted growing interest, but many basic components remain tied to specific manifolds, rely on Euclidean approximations, or require costly and numerically fragile geometric operations. This thesis develops a unified framework for Riemannian deep learning from three complementary perspectives: reusable neural modules, manifold-specific network architectures, and the design of underlying geometries. It generalizes batch normalization from Euclidean spaces and individual manifolds to broad classes of Lie groups and gyrogroups, and extends multinomial logistic regression from Euclidean space to SPD manifolds and then to general Riemannian manifolds. It further develops neural networks for several important geometric representations, including an unconstrained model of hyperbolic space, Busemann-based hyperbolic learning, and full-rank correlation matrices. Finally, it introduces adaptive and computationally efficient Riemannian metrics on SPD manifolds, including learnable Log-Euclidean geometries and fast, stable Cholesky-based geometries. The proposed methods are supported by theoretical analysis and validated through numerical experiments and applications in vision, signal processing, graph learning, and genomics.

From Intent to Improvement: Agentic Dataset Search for Better Model Training

Qiaosheng Chen, Kaijia Huang, Fanqi Zhou, Gong Cheng

Finding training data in million-scale machine learning repositories is a Web search problem where text relevance is not enough. A query couples a semantic training goal with constraints such as task, license, and training stage, and the metadata that would verify them are often missing. Text retrieval ranks dataset cards by similarity but cannot enforce hard constraints or follow the relations that reach a sparsely described dataset. Free-form tool-calling agents are more flexible, but the same model that picks a dataset also declares it a match, and nothing checks that the query's constraints are actually met. Neither approach establishes that the data it returns will improve model training. To address it, we propose AgenticDS, a contract-governed agentic framework in which every language model decision instantiates a typed object before deterministic code consumes it. The framework compiles a query into a typed search plan, executes it through admissible deterministic operators over hybrid retrieval and bounded graph expansion, and verifies the provenance-grounded evidence before accepting a ranking or emitting a typed diagnosis that permits only local repairs. On HuDS-Bench, a new benchmark of 200 queries with 24,908 graded judgments pooled over 15 systems, AgenticDS improves NDCG@10 by 25.7\% over the strongest dense--sparse hybrid and by 18.9\% over a commercial LLM agent. A controlled search-to-train study further shows that the datasets it retrieves give the best downstream accuracy in mathematics, code, and medicine. Code and data are publicly available at https://github.com/nju-websoft/AgenticDS.

MarineLife-16K: An Attribute-Rich Video-Text Dataset for Motion-Aware Marine Video Understanding

Quang-Trung Truong, Thanh-Nghia Nguyen, Phu-Phong Vo, Jaeyeon Kim, Cheng Chen, Jie Zhang, Binh-Son Hua, Duc Thanh Nguyen 等 10 位作者

Marine video understanding is crucial for a wide range of real-world applications. However, existing marine video datasets suffer from limitations, including the limited number of data samples, fine-grained text descriptions, and detailed visual attributes. To address these limitations, we introduce a large-scale, video-text dataset featuring rich, in-the-wild visual attributes tailored for complex marine environments. Our dataset comprises 2,000 video-text pairs annotated with 13 attributes covering up to four objects per scene, object visual/geometric properties, behaviors, environmental context, and camera motion, spanning diverse lighting conditions, times of day, and 7 countries. From these annotations, we generate 16,080 video-question pairs (12,080 multiple-choice, 4,000 open-ended). Furthermore, we benchmark both proprietary and open-source video-LLM models on video question answering and video captioning tasks. We find that (i) proprietary models often achieves superior performances; (ii) VLMs handle object motion well but struggle with complex camera motion; (iii) closed-source models struggle to perceive camera motion; and (iv) VLMs struggle to reason in static cameras.

A-RSI: Adaptive Task Refresh for Zero-Data Multimodal Self-Improvement

Yu Liu, Youxing Li, Yuedong Tan, Zhiwei Yang, Zihan Su, Hanqi Feng, Shaojie Zhang, Libin Liao 等 20 位作者

Recursive self-improvement requires models not only to acquire useful training experience, but also to decide when their current experience has ceased to be useful. Existing methods often focus on what experience to generate next, while paying less attention to when fresh experience should be introduced. Many also construct training targets through self-consistency or majority voting, making supervision depend on the model's own uncertain predictions. We address these two questions separately: training dynamics determine when to acquire new experience, while the answers to new tasks remain independently checkable. A-RSI monitors reward variation and accuracy in training logs to refresh a task pool when its learning signal declines, without consulting validation or test scores. A static library of model-authored programs produces multimodal questions and derives their reference answers; we specify the task-generation contract, automatically verify chosen properties of the reward and refresh rules, and separately audit the generated answers. The training loop uses no external training examples or human-written answer labels. On the primary eleven-benchmark suite, A-RSI raises the performance average from 57.77 to 61.05 with 800 fresh tasks.

MemPrism: Task-Conditioned Relational Memory Views for Long-Horizon Agents

Bingfan Zeng, Zhisheng Chen, Zhengwei Xie, Bangde Cao, Yuxuan Li, Jinhan Li, Zheng Lu, Xiangchen Guan 等 11 位作者

Long-horizon agents performing multi-step Web tasks must reuse earlier page observations and interactions to support subsequent actions. However, preserving relevant history does not ensure that it exposes the relations needed for the current decision. We call this gap representation mismatch. To this end, we propose MemPrism, a task-conditioned relational memory framework that separates persistent experience storage from decision-time working memory. MemPrism records interactions as the event stream and dynamically constructs relational views according to the current task context. A lightweight view policy selects the relation structure, evidence range, outcome condition, and granularity, while a deterministic composer and renderer transform historical facts into a temporary optical working-memory view for a frozen task policy. Experiments on long-horizon embodied and web-agent benchmarks show that MemPrism consistently improves the task performance, especially as trajectories become longer, while reducing memory token consumption. Furthermore, the learned view policy transfers across different VLMs without additional adaptation, demonstrating the effectiveness of task-conditioned relational views as a general memory interface for agents.

PailitaoMMSearch2.0 Technical Report: Scaling Generative Retrieval to Unified End-to-End Multimodal Search

Xiaohan Ye, Zihan Gong, Jingqian Zhao, Lianyu Du, Yunmeng Shu, Xu Chen, Zesheng Zhou, Renchun You 等 12 位作者

Generative retrieval models have been increasingly adopted in search and recommendation systems. However, industrial generative retrieval models are commonly specialized to a fixed online scenario: they learn from scenario-specific interactions, support a narrow set of query forms and retrieval objectives. We study how to remove these couplings and build a unified end-to-end multimodal search system for open-ended image--text queries, heterogeneous shopping intents, and online scenarios with different resource constraints. We present \textbf{PailitaoMMSearch}, which directly generates product Semantic IDs from a raw query image and free-form instruction and scales along three dimensions. \textbf{Data scaling} uses a reusable toolset that can be composed into intent- and lifecycle-specific workflows for cold-start synthesis, quality control, real-traffic refinement, and continuous data production. \textbf{Intent scaling} progressively equips one model with e-commerce product knowledge, multiple retrieval relations, and adjustable reasoning budgets through continual pre-training (CPT), mixed-budget supervised fine-tuning (SFT), and unified reinforcement learning (RL). The RL stage combines intent-balanced optimization and Sample--Beam rollouts aligned with multi-candidate serving. \textbf{Scenario scaling} exposes quality--cost operating points across model capacity and reasoning budget. The system is deployed in multimodal search applications on Taobao Pailitao. A controlled online A/B test reports statistically significant improvements, including item page views $\textbf{+17.90\%}$, transactions $\textbf{+27.04\%}$, and gross merchandise value $\textbf{+8.94\%}$.

Bridged Self-Distillation for On-Policy Learning

Runsheng Chen, Yihong Liu, Raoyuan Zhao, Michael A. Hedderich, Hinrich Schütze, Matthias Grabmair

On-policy distillation can transfer the reasoning capabilities of a strong teacher to a smaller student. However, distillation from a stronger teacher model faces two mismatches: its solutions may be difficult for a smaller student to imitate, and its token-level probabilities may be incompatible with, or even unavailable to, the student. Existing methods handle these settings through different forms of supervision. To this end, we propose Bridged Self-Distillation (BSD), a unified framework for distilling from any teacher that provides reasoning traces. The model to be distilled from, termed the external teacher, first provides a reasoning trace as privileged context, which can be generated in an offline fashion. The student generates rollouts without this context, while a copy of the student conditioned on it, serving as the self-teacher, scores the same rollouts in the student's own token space. BSD uses the resulting token-level guidance to adjust updates on unsuccessful rollouts, with a verifier providing the outcome signal. As the external teacher is queried only to produce text, the same training procedure applies to all teacher scenarios: shared-tokenizer, cross-tokenizer, and closed API teachers. Across these scenarios, BSD improves over the base model and outperforms baselines tailored to each scenario, offering a novel and unified pathway for distillation. Code is available: https://github.com/TUMLegalTech/Bridged-Self-Distillation

RepoTrace: Improving Requirement Tracing in Multi-Round Agent Interactions

Huanyu Liu, Yezheng Cheng, Jinliang You, Tianxiao Huang, Linyu Li, Zheng Fang, Peng Cao, Ge Li

Code agents have become increasingly capable of performing software engineering tasks through interaction with software environments. However, agents tend to degrade as the number of interaction rounds increases, making it difficult to maintain existing software during iterative modification. We analyze 2,656 agent trajectories in EvoCode-Bench and identify requirement focus misalignment as a recurring failure pattern, where agents struggle to distinguish the primary modification targets of a requirement from unrelated code. We propose Repotrace a requirement-driven repository understanding harness that combines repository structure with requirement semantics to construct a requirement-code correspondence and injects it into the agent context. This correspondence enables code agents to follow the repository architecture, trace requirements across multi-round interactions, and identify the core code elements corresponding to the current requirement. Experiments show that Repotrace improves the mean per-round reward (MPR) across different models (e.g., +19.99 on GLM-5.2) and agent harnesses (e.g., +10.22 on Claude Code). Across rounds, Repotrace increases the average per-round reward from 0.163 to 0.371 on Terminus-2 with DeepSeek-V4-Pro, while reducing average regression errors by 56.78%. We release the source code and agents' trajectories to support future research.

MED-COPILOT: A Medical Assistant Powered by GraphRAG and Similar Patient Case Retrieval

Shuheng Chen, Namratha Patil, Haonan Pan, Angel Hsing-Chi Hwang University of Southern California, Yao Du University of Southern California, Ruishan Liu University of Southern California, Jieyu Zhao University of Southern California

Clinical decision-making requires synthesizing heterogeneous evidence, including patient histories, clinical guidelines, and trajectories of comparable cases. While large language models (LLMs) offer strong reasoning capabilities, they remain prone to hallucinations and struggle to integrate long, structured medical documents. We present MED-COPILOT, an interactive research prototype for evidence-aware clinical reasoning, designed to help clinicians and medical trainees inspect guideline-level and patient-level evidence. MED-COPILOT combines guideline-grounded GraphRAG retrieval with hybrid semantic-keyword similar-patient retrieval to support transparent and evidence-aware clinical reasoning. The system builds a structured knowledge graph from WHO and NICE guidelines, applies community-level summarization for efficient retrieval, and maintains a 36,000-case similar-patient database derived from SOAP-normalized MIMIC-IV notes and Synthea-generated records. We evaluate our framework on clinical note completion and medical question answering, and demonstrate that it consistently outperforms parametric LLM baselines and standard RAG, improving generation fidelity and benchmark QA accuracy. The full system is available at https://huggingface.co/spaces/shuhengc/MED-COPILOT, enabling users to inspect retrieved evidence, visualize token-level similarity contributions, and conduct guided follow-up analysis. Our results suggest a practical and interpretable approach to integrating structured guideline knowledge with patient-level analogical evidence for clinical LLMs.

TeachMaster: Generative Teaching via Code

Yuheng Wang, Runde Yang, Lin Wu, Jie Zhang, Jingru Fan, Tianle Zhou, Ruoyu Fu, Huatao Li 等 12 位作者

The scalability of high-quality online education is hindered by the high costs and slow cycles of manual content creation.Despite advancements in video generation, current approaches often fail to ensure pedagogical structure and precise control due to their pixel-level, black-box nature. In this paper, we propose Generative Teaching, a novel paradigm shifting educators from manual creators to high-level directors who focus on pedagogical intents while agents handle the execution. To realize this vision, we introduce TeachMaster, a multi-agent framework that leverages code as an intermediate semantic medium. Unlike traditional video generation methods, TeachMaster orchestrates a collaborative team of agents, spanning planning, design, and rendering, to automate the production of interpretable, editable, and curriculum-ready educational videos. Experiments validate that TeachMaster significantly boosts production efficiency without compromising structural coherence or visual fidelity, slashing production costs to only 0.3% of traditional online course videos and providing a robust solution for scalable education.

Task-Aware LLM Routing with Multi-Level Task-Profile-Guided Data Synthesis for Cold-Start Scenarios

Hui Liu City University of Hong Kong, Bin Zou, Kecheng Chen City University of Hong Kong, Jie Liu City University of Hong Kong, Wenya Wang Nanyang Technological University, Haoliang Li City University of Hong Kong

Large language models (LLMs) exhibit substantial variability in performance and computational cost across tasks and queries, motivating routing systems that select models to meet user-specific cost–performance trade-offs. However, existing routers generalize poorly in cold-start scenarios where in-domain training data is unavailable. We address this limitation with a multi-level task-profile–guided data synthesis framework that constructs a hierarchical task taxonomy and produces diverse question–answer pairs to approximate the test-time query distribution. Building on this, we introduce TRouter, a task-type–aware router approach that models query-conditioned cost and performance via latent task-type variables, with prior regularization derived from the synthesized task taxonomy. This design enhances TRouter’s routing utility under both cold-start and in-domain settings. Across multiple benchmarks, we show that our synthesis framework alleviates cold-start issues and that TRouter delivers effective LLM routing.

Good Arguments Against the People Pleasers: How Reasoning Mitigates (Yet Masks) LLM Sycophancy

Zhaoxin Feng, Zheng Chen Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Jianfei Ma, Yip Tin Po, Emmanuele Chersoni The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Bo Li

Alignment techniques often inadvertently induce sycophancy in LLMs. While prior studies studied this behaviour in direct-answer settings, the role of Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning remains under-explored: does it serve as a logical constraint that mitigates sycophancy, or a tool for post-hoc rationalization that masks it? We evaluate a range of models across objective and subjective tasks to investigate the issue. Results show that reasoning generally reduces sycophancy in final decisions but also masks sycophancy in some samples, where models construct deceptive justifications through logical inconsistencies, calculation errors, and one-sided arguments etc. Furthermore, LLMs are more prone to sycophancy in subjective tasks and under authority-bias. Our mechanistic analysis reveals that the tendency of sycophancy in LLMs is dynamic during the reasoning process rather than being pre-determined at the input.

OptiCo: Adaptive Distributed Training Optimization via Collaborative Agent Reasoning

Sheng Chen Zhejiang lab, Tang Zhe, Weixing Zhang Zhejiang Lab, Fei Yang Zhejiang Lab, Yuanyuan Wang, Tianlin Li Beihang University, Yang Liu Nanyang Technological University

Optimizing distributed training strategies for large-scale deep learning models remains a critical challenge in both industry and academia, demanding extensive domain expertise and manual tuning. Existing automated distributed training frameworks are plagued by over-reliance on prior profiling, poor generalization across models/hardware, and scalability constraints stemming from vast search spaces, impeding real-world applicability. To address these challenges, we propose OptiCo, a model-driven multi-agent framework that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to enable automatic and explainable distributed training strategy configuration. OptiCo orchestrates a team of reasoning-driven agents, through a shared Global Message Pool facilitating persistent memory and coordination. By employing inception prompting and Chain-Of-Thought (COT) reasoning, agents iteratively refine configurations, detect bottlenecks, analyze failures, and optimize resource utilization. Evaluated across 25+ configurations spanning diverse model architectures, GPU types and scales, OptiCo outperforms expert-designed strategies within 20 iterations, achieving an average performance improvement of 1.84%, with gains ranging from 0.08% to 8.65%. The source codes are avaiable at https://github.com/TangZhe96/OptiCo-public.

Existing long-horizon memory benchmarks mostly use multi-turn dialogues or synthetic user histories, which makes retrieval performance an imperfect proxy for person understanding. We present Knowme-Bench, a publicly releasable benchmark built from long-form autobiographical narratives, where actions, context, and inner thoughts provide dense evidence for inferring stable motivations and decision principles. Knowme-Bench reconstructs each narrative into a flashback-aware, time-anchored stream and evaluates models with evidence-linked questions spanning factual recall, subjective state attribution, and principle-level reasoning. Across diverse narrative sources, retrieval-augmented systems mainly improve factual accuracy, while errors persist on temporally grounded explanations and higher-level inferences, highlighting the need for memory mechanisms beyond retrieval.

Mitigating Safety Context Amnesia in Multimodal Reasoning Models via Intent-Guided Safety Reasoning

Xiyao Dong, Guangsheng Cheng, YiLong Chen, Xiaojin Zhang, Kun He Huazhong University of Sceince and Technology

Recent advances in Multimodal Large Reasoning Models (MLRMs) have enabled explicit chain-of-thought inference across vision and language, substantially improving performance on complex reasoning tasks. Despite these gains, the reasoning process introduces a subtle yet critical vulnerability. We identify an underexplored multimodal safety failure mode in which harmful objectives are embedded within ostensibly benign contexts, leading models to over-prioritize narrative coherence during reasoning. We term this phenomenon Safety Context Amnesia (SCA), wherein models correctly perceive risk-relevant visual cues but fail to enforce safety constraints as the reasoning process becomes dominated by contextual alignment. To mitigate SCA, we propose Intent-Guided Safety Reasoning (IGSR), an inference-time defense that operates without modifying target model parameters. IGSR employs a Perception Decoupler to extract objective visual evidence into a structured intent output, followed by a Cognitive Arbiter that enforces explicit safety constraints prior to generation. Extensive experiments across multiple multimodal safety benchmarks demonstrate that IGSR improves defense success rates by over 62% compared to baselines, while largely preserving task utility. These results highlight the critical role of structured, intent-aware reasoning in achieving robust safety reasoning for multimodal reasoning models.

Open LLMs enable AI practitioners to control development costs by building on an existing foundation for downstream applications. While offering substantial promise, current models often fail to meet the needs of users needing open solutions aligned with responsible AI principles, including data compliance, transparency, and inclusivity. In this work, we present Apertus, a fully open suite of large language models (LLMs) designed to address responsibility shortcomings in today’s open model ecosystem, namely data responsibility and global representation. Unlike many prior models that release weights without reproducible data pipelines or regard for content-owner rights, Apertus models are pretrained exclusively on openly available data, retroactively respecting robots.txt exclusions and filtering for non-permissive, toxic, and personally identifiable content. To mitigate risks of data memorization, we also adopt the Goldfish objective during pretraining, strongly suppressing verbatim recall of data while retaining downstream task performance. Apertus also drastically expands multilingual coverage, training on 15T tokens from over approximately 1800 languages, with about 40% of pretraining data allocated to non-English content. Released at 8B and 70B scales, Apertus approaches state-of-the-art results among fully open models on multilingual benchmarks, rivaling or surpassing open-weight counterparts.

MCP-Flow: Facilitating LLM Agents to Master Real-World, Diverse and Scaling MCP Tools

WenHao Wang, Peizhi Niu, Zhao Xu Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of California, Los Angeles and Tsinghua University, Zhaoyu Chen Tiktok, Jian Du TikTok, Yaxin Du, Xianghe Pang, Keduan Huang 等 11 位作者

Large Language Models (LLMs) increasingly rely on external tools to perform complex, realistic tasks, yet their ability to utilize the rapidly expanding Model Contextual Protocol (MCP) ecosystem remains limited. Existing MCP research covers few servers, depends on costly manual curation, and lacks training support, hindering progress toward real-world deployment. To overcome these limitations, we introduce MCP-Flow, an automated web-agent-driven pipeline for large-scale server discovery, data synthesis, and model training. MCP-Flow collects and filters data from 1166 servers and 11536 tools, producing 68733 high-quality instruction-function call pairs and 6439 trajectories, far exceeding prior work in scale and diversity. Extensive experiments demonstrate MCP-Flow’s effectiveness in driving superior MCP tool selection, function-call generation, and enhanced agentic task performance. MCP-Flow thus provides a scalable foundation for advancing LLM agents’ proficiency in real-world MCP environments.

Traffic-R1: Reinforced LLMs Bring Human-Like Reasoning to Traffic Signal Control Systems

Xingchen Zou, Yuhao Yang, Zheng Chen pcitech, Xixuan Hao, Yiqi Chen, Chao Huang University of Hong Kong, Yuxuan Liang The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou)

We introduce Traffic-R1, a 3B-parameter foundation model with human-like reasoning for Traffic signal control (TSC), developed via self-exploration and iterative reinforcement of LLM with expert guidance in a simulated traffic environment. Compared with traditional reinforcement learning and recent LLM-based methods, Traffic-R1 offers three main advantages: zero-shot generalization, transferring unchanged to new road networks and out-of-distribution incidents by leveraging internal traffic-control policies and reasoning; a compact 3B-parameter design that supports real-time inference on mobile-class chips for edge deployment; and an explainable TSC process that enables multi-intersection coordination through communication and an asynchronous communication network. Extensive benchmarks show Traffic-R1 outperforms strong baselines and training-intensive RL controllers. In production, the model now manages signals affecting over 55,000 drivers daily, reduces average queue lengths by more than 5%, and halves operator workload. We will open source our checkpoint and code to foster further research.

Magellan: Autonomous Discovery of Novel Compiler Optimization Heuristics with AlphaEvolve

Hongzheng Chen, Alexander Novikov, Ngân Vũ, Hanna Alam, Zhiru Zhang, Aiden Grossman, Mircea Trofin, Amir Yazdanbakhsh

Modern compilers rely on hand-crafted heuristics to guide optimization passes. These human-designed rules often struggle to adapt to the complexity of modern software and hardware and lead to high maintenance burden. To address this challenge, we present Magellan, an agentic framework that evolves the compiler pass itself by synthesizing executable C++ decision logic. Magellan couples an LLM coding agent with evolutionary search and autotuning in a closed loop of generation, evaluation on user-provided macro-benchmarks, and refinement, producing compact heuristics that integrate directly into existing compilers. Across several production optimization tasks, Magellan discovers policies that match or surpass expert baselines. In LLVM function inlining, Magellan synthesizes new heuristics that outperform decades of manual engineering for both binary-size reduction and end-to-end performance. In register allocation, it learns a concise priority rule for live-range processing that matches intricate human-designed policies on a large-scale workload. We also report preliminary results on XLA problems, demonstrating portability beyond LLVM with reduced engineering effort.

When Chain of Thought is Necessary, Language Models Struggle to Evade Monitors

Scott Emmons, Erik Jenner, David K. Elson, Rif A. Saurous, Senthooran Rajamanoharan, Heng Chen, Irhum Shafkat, Rohin Shah

While chain-of-thought (CoT) monitoring is an appealing AI safety defense, recent work on "unfaithfulness" has cast doubt on its reliability. These findings highlight an important failure mode, particularly when CoT acts as a post-hoc rationalization in applications like auditing for bias. However, for the distinct problem of runtime monitoring to prevent severe harm, we argue the key property is not faithfulness but monitorability. To this end, we introduce a conceptual framework distinguishing CoT-as-rationalization from CoT-as-computation. We expect that certain classes of severe harm will require complex, multi-step reasoning that necessitates CoT-as-computation. Replicating the experimental setups of prior work, we increase the difficulty of the bad behavior to enforce this necessity condition; this forces the model to expose its reasoning, making it monitorable. We then present methodology guidelines to stress-test CoT monitoring against deliberate evasion. Applying these guidelines, we find that models can learn to obscure their intentions, but only when given significant help, such as detailed human-written strategies or iterative optimization against the monitor. We conclude that, while not infallible, CoT monitoring offers a substantial layer of defense that requires active protection and continued stress-testing.

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

AI 速览:提出 Hammer 系列端侧函数调用基础模型,通过增强数据集和函数掩码技术提升对无关函数的敏感性和跨基准泛化能力。

Large language models have demonstrated impressive value in performing as autonomous agents when equipped with external tools and API calls. Nonetheless, effectively harnessing their potential for executing complex tasks crucially relies on enhancements in their function calling capabilities. This paper identifies a critical gap in existing function calling models, where performance varies significantly across benchmarks, often due to being misled by specific naming conventions. To address such an issue, we introduce Hammer, a novel family of foundation models specifically engineered for on-device function calling. Hammer employs an augmented dataset that enhances models' sensitivity to irrelevant functions and incorporates function masking techniques to minimize misleading. Our empirical evaluations reveal that Hammer not only outperforms larger models but also demonstrates robust generalization across diverse benchmarks, achieving sota results. Our open source contributions include a specialized dataset for irrelevance detection, a tuning framework for enhanced generalization, and the Hammer models, establishing a new standard for function calling performance.
