Lotus: Learning to Understand Time-series by Learning to Forecast

Van Dai Do, Huu Hiep Nguyen, Minh Hoang Nguyen, Manh Nguyen, Hung Le

原文摘要

Time-series language models typically align numerical signals with language using labels, captions, or question-answer pairs, without explicitly requiring their representations to preserve how the underlying signals evolve. We introduce forecast grounding, a pretraining principle that requires language-aligned time-series representations to remain predictive of the future evolution before they are adapted to downstream tasks. We instantiate this principle in Lotus, which divides each time-series channel into non-overlapping patches and maps them into the LLM embedding space. It then predicts the next patch from the LLM hidden states of the time-series tokens, encouraging the learned representation to retain temporal information. To capture both temporal changes and periodic patterns, we also propose a temporal-spectral patch representation that combines each raw time-series patch with its spectral representation before mapping it into the LLM embedding space. Across three language model backbones and six downstream evaluation datasets, Lotus achieves the best average performance with minimal trainable parameters, reaching 59.91% accuracy and outperforming the strongest matched baseline by 3.36%. Our representation analyses further show that Lotus uses the numerical input and preserves temporal structure in its learned patch representations. These results establish forecast grounding as a promising pretraining principle, enabling compact time-series language models to outperform models 25-50 times their size on TSRBench. MoEDDI: Semantic Mixtures of Experts for Long Tailed Drug Drug Interaction Prediction

原文摘要

Descriptor-based drug--drug interaction (DDI) models typically apply a single global predictor despite heterogeneous physicochemical evidence and severely long-tailed labels. We introduce \textbf{MoEDDI (Mixture-of-Experts for Drug--Drug Interaction prediction)}, a chemically organized mixture-of-experts that routes overlapping descriptor families using low-dimensional statistics and combines their sparse top-$2$ mixture with a global T-DDI pathway through a residual logit correction. The residual parameterization can exactly preserve a supplied T-DDI checkpoint at initialization, although the evaluated models are trained from scratch. Across complete test partitions with 178, 86, and 92 classes, MoEDDI improves macro-F1 over reproduced seed-2026 T-DDI baselines from 0.8284 to 0.8485, 0.4729 to 0.6536, and 0.1807 to 0.4671. On the 3,780-feature corpus, the lowest-support group (89 classes with fewer than 50 test examples) shows the largest mean classwise gain (+3.30 F1 points). Calibration improves on one corpus but worsens on two. These single-seed results support semantic conditional specialization while motivating matched ablations and distribution-shift evaluation.

A learning-based method of automatic music transcription

Phu-Anh-Tai Do, Huu-Hoang Nguyen, Duc-Hoang Nguyen, Thanh-Hai Le

原文摘要

Automatic Music Transcription (AMT) seeks to convert acoustic music recordings into symbolic musical notation, a process that remains remarkably difficult for polyphonic piano due to concurrent polyphony, harmonic partial interference, expressive timing, and severe pitch activation sparsity. In this paper, we formulate polyphonic piano transcription as a frame-level multi-label classification problem across the standard 88 piano pitches (MIDI notes 21 to 108). Raw audio waveforms are processed using the Constant-Q Transform (CQT) to construct a geometrically spaced log-frequency time-frequency representation that aligns with the chromatic musical scale across seven octaves (252 frequency bins per frame). We systematically investigate recurrent sequence models, contrasting unidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) with Bidirectional LSTM (BiLSTM) backbones, and propose two architectural adaptations tailored to recurrent temporal representations: a modified additive attention module and a modified multihead attention mechanism equipped with hyperbolic tangent activation and head-wise summation. Furthermore, to mitigate the severe class imbalance between inactive and active notes (approximately 41:1), we evaluate Weighted Binary Cross-Entropy (WBCE) alongside standard Binary Cross-Entropy (BCE). Rigorous empirical evaluations on the MAPS and MAESTRO datasets demonstrate steady, compounding gains from bidirectionality and attention mechanisms. Our proposed Multihead Attention-BiLSTM architecture attains an F1-score of 88.20%, an accuracy of 78.90%, a precision of 0.89, and a recall of 0.86, substantially outperforming the baseline unidirectional LSTM (F1-score of 71.20%) while maintaining a compact parameter budget of 4.43M. Qualitative piano-roll visualizations confirm that our model generates faithful transcriptions even in complex harmonic passages.

Efficient Image Synthesis with Sphere Latent Encoder

Tung Do, Thuan Hoang Nguyen, Hao Li

原文摘要

Few-step image generation has seen rapid progress, with consistency and meanflow-based methods significantly reducing the number of sampling steps. Despite their low inference cost, these approaches often suffer from training instability and limited scalability. Sphere Encoder is a recent alternative that produces high-quality images in only a few steps; however, it requires repeated transitions between the pixel space and latent space during inference while jointly optimizing reconstruction and generation within a single architecture. This design leads to computational inefficiency and objective conflict between reconstruction and generation. To address these limitations, we decouple the framework into a fixed pretrained image encoder and a separate latent denoising model trained entirely in a spherical latent space. Our approach eliminates repeated pixel-space operations during training and inference, improving efficiency and allowing reconstruction and generation to specialize independently. On Animal-Faces, Oxford-Flowers and ImageNet-1K datasets, our method significantly outperforms Sphere Encoder in both generation quality and inference speed, while achieving competitive results against strong few-step and multi-step baselines.

Gemini 1.5: Unlocking multimodal understanding across millions of tokens of context

原文摘要

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.
