Joint Detection of Fraud and Concept Drift inOnline Conversations with LLM-Assisted Judgment

Ali Şenol, Garima Agrawal, Huan Liu

Detecting fake interactions in digital communication platforms remains a challenging and insufficiently addressed problem. These interactions may appear as harmless spam or escalate into sophisticated scam attempts, making it difficult to flag malicious intent early. Traditional detection methods often rely on static anomaly detection techniques that fail to adapt to dynamic conversational shifts. One key limitation is the misinterpretation of benign topic transitions referred to as concept drift as fraudulent behavior, leading to either false alarms or missed threats. We propose a two stage detection framework that first identifies suspicious conversations using a tailored ensemble classification model. To improve the reliability of detection, we incorporate a concept drift analysis step using a One Class Drift Detector (OCDD) to isolate conversational shifts within flagged dialogues. When drift is detected, a large language model (LLM) assesses whether the shift indicates fraudulent manipulation or a legitimate topic change. In cases where no drift is found, the behavior is inferred to be spam like. We validate our framework using a dataset of social engineering chat scenarios and demonstrate its practical advantages in improving both accuracy and interpretability for real time fraud detection. To contextualize the trade offs, we compare our modular approach against a Dual LLM baseline that performs detection and judgment using different language models.

Self-Supervised Latent Action-Conditioned World Modeling for Time Series

Chia-Han Kuo, Chengshuai Zhao, Huan Liu, Lo Pang-Yun Ting

Time-series data play an important role in various tasks, such as weather forecasting, web traffic analysis, and speech recognition. Recently, pioneering studies have increasingly adopted Joint-Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA) based encoders to learn time-series representations through latent-space prediction. However, they often overlook the underlying factors governing transitions between time-series observations. In this work, we hypothesize that explicitly modeling the information behind changes in time series can facilitate time-series modeling. Building on this hypothesis, we propose ACTS-WM, a self-supervised latent action-conditioned world model framework for time-series analysis. First, we introduce a latent action modeling approach that infers the underlying information behind time-series transitions as latent actions, without requiring explicit action annotations. We then develop a JEPA-based encoder and an action-conditioned world model to predict target time-series representations conditioned on the learned latent actions and task information. We evaluate ACTS-WM across 4 representative tasks on 22 datasets from diverse domains, covering univariate and multivariate forecasting and classification. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that ACTS-WM can improve downstream performance over pretrained JEPA-based encoders by learning complementary representations.

TextCloak: Safeguarding Data from Unauthorized LLM Fine-Tuning via RL-Driven Unlearnable Examples

Chengshuai Zhao, Pingchuan Ma, Dawei Li, Bohan Jiang, Zhiyuan Yu, Zhen Tan, Huan Liu

The development of Large Language Models (LLMs) has led to significant advances across a wide range of language tasks, while simultaneously raising growing concerns about unauthorized online data exploitation and privacy leakage. Unlearnable examples (UEs) emerge as a promising defense by injecting crafted perturbations into data such that models trained on them exhibit degraded utility. However, existing methods for text protection are primarily designed for classification tasks and discriminative language models, which limits their broad applicability (e.g., instruction following or reasoning) in LLMs. In this work, we propose **TextCloak**, an RL-driven data synthesis framework that safeguards textual data against unauthorized LLM fine-tuning. TextCloak employs a *UE generative policy* that transforms clean text into unlearnable examples while preserving semantic fidelity and linguistic naturalness. To optimize the policy, we introduce **GRPO-UE**, which simulates the attacker's LLM fine-tuning and rewards downstream degradation via group-relative policy optimization. This overall formulates a bi-level optimization loop, allowing the generator to discover effective protective patterns. Comprehensive experiments on six publicly available datasets and nine state-of-the-art LLMs demonstrate that TextCloak consistently impairs unauthorized LLM fine-tuning while maintaining text utility for legitimate use. Further analyses confirm its transferability and robustness across model architectures, training configurations, and adaptive attacks, highlighting its broad applicability as a practical defense for online content.

Investigating Forecasting Capabilities of Narrative Networks on Emerging Stories

Ravi Teja Karumuri, Steven Corman, Huan Liu, Joshua Garland

Networks have been used to model the interactions among the elements that underlie a narrative. In this paper, we investigate whether the structure of these networks can predict which links will emerge as a storyline evolves. We construct these networks from news articles using a Semantic Edge Parser (SEP) built on a Large Language Model (LLM), and evaluate the networks on three disparate real-world storylines, the 2022 Canadian Freedom Convoy, Hurricane Melissa (2025), and the 2025-26 Iranian protests. To test the narrative network's predictive capability, we construct a rolling window of the narrative and predict the emergent links between existing narrative elements on the day following the rolling window period. We identify candidate links with seven standard link predictors, including the Adamic-Adar index, Common Neighbors, and Preferential Attachment. Forecasting next-day links across the three storylines, we find Preferential Attachment to be the strongest standard link predictor, achieving a mean ROC-AUC of 0.76-0.79. It exceeds EdgeBank, a memorization baseline, by 11.3-14.5 points on every event. To summarize, narrative-network structure ranks next-day emergent relations above chance, though this advantage is concentrated among the most frequently mentioned, highly connected entities.

DPE-Rec: Diversity-Preserving and Efficient Diffusion Language Model Recommendation for Bundle Construction

Pingchuan Ma, Bohan Jiang, Chengshuai Zhao, Dawei Li, Zhen Tan, Huan Liu

Generative bundle construction completes a partially observed bundle by generating its missing items from a large product catalog. Compared to autoregressive LLMs, diffusion LLM emerges as a natural fit for this unordered generation task. Their bidirectional attention provides an inductive bias better aligned with unordered bundle construction. Iterative denoising can reveal multiple tokens per step, potentially reducing inference latency. However, directly applying DLMs to this task presents two key challenges: 1 Despite its flexible reveal order, confidence-guided decoding tends to postpone semantic-fork decisions until refinement tokens constrain their choices, reducing bundle diversity. 2 Revealing more tokens per step can compromise recommendation quality, stifling the potential for faster inference. We introduce DPE-Rec, a diffusion framework for diversity preservation and efficient recommendation. DPE-Rec preserves diversity by introducing semantic-fork-aware GRPO, which prioritizes semantic-fork decisions via autoregressive rollouts. It improves efficiency through pseudo-trajectory distillation, which concentrates learning from the vast random corruption space onto the compact trajectory-induced subspace visited by high-quality decoding, unlocking reliable multi-token decoding. Together, these components enable diverse and accurate bundle construction with substantially fewer denoise steps. Experiments on multiple bundle construction benchmarks show that DPE-Rec improves recommendation performance by 63% on average, and its fast variant achieves 25.6$times$ faster inference on average than existing generative recommendation arts, with minimal loss in recommendation quality.

One Pair Suffices: Unlocking Universal Zero-Shot Translation via Cross-Architecture Alignment

Hao Zong, Cong Hu Yuan, Chao Bei, Wentao Chen, Huan Liu Global Tone Communication Technology, Kaiyu Huang Beijing Jiaotong University, Degen Huang Fuyao University of Science and Technology

Current paradigms for empowering Large Language Models (LLMs) with multilingual capabilities rely heavily on massive instruction tuning. We challenge this view, proposing that the barrier is topological alignment, not data quantity. We introduce Hybrid Cross-Alignment (HCA), fusing a frozen NLLB encoder with a Qwen decoder via a closed-loop dual-adapter architecture. HCA utilizes a Source-Side Adapter to precondition encoder features and a Query-Residual Adapter to preserve generative stability, bridged by an adaptive gated cross-modal interface. Our core discovery is Universal Alignment Generalization.” We demonstrate that training HCA on a single language pair (German-English) unlocks state-of-the-art zero-shot transfer to dozens of unseen languages. Crucially, our Oracle” experiments reveal that this single-pair training recovers over 96.7% of the performance achievable by training on all available pairs. This proves that a universal, language-agnostic projection protocol exists. With a total inference footprint of 5.25B parameters, our model significantly outperforms larger baselines, surpassing TowerPlus-9B (+9.0 COMET on low-resource languages) and Aya-101 (13B). Furthermore, performance scales linearly with encoder size; upgrading from 600M to 1.3B yields immediate gains (+3.4 points on Gujarati) with minimal retraining cost.

ETR: Entropy Trend Reward for Efficient Chain-of-Thought Reasoning

Xuan Xiong, Huan Liu Amazon, Li Gu Concordia University, Zhixiang Chi University of Toronto and Huawei Technologies Ltd., Yue Qiu, Yuanhao YU Huawei Technologies Ltd., Yang Wang Concordia University

Chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning improves large language model performance on complex tasks, but often produces excessively long and inefficient reasoning traces. Existing methods shorten CoTs using length penalties or global entropy reduction, implicitly assuming that low uncertainty is desirable throughout reasoning. We show instead that reasoning efficiency is governed by the trajectory of uncertainty. CoTs with dominant downward entropy trends are substantially shorter. Motivated by this insight, we propose Entropy Trend Reward (ETR), a trajectory-aware objective that encourages progressive uncertainty reduction while allowing limited local exploration. We integrate ETR into Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) and evaluate it across multiple reasoning models and challenging benchmarks. ETR consistently achieves a superior accuracy–efficiency trade-off, improving DeepSeek-R1-Distill-7B by +9.9% accuracy while reducing CoT length by 67% across four benchmarks.

From Factuality to Meta-Factivity: A Cognitive Blueprint for Trustworthy LLMs

Daohuan Liu Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Lun Xia, Yuer Wang Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Jiaoyang Su Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Xuri Tang Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Current research on Event Factuality Prediction (EFP) predominantly treats LLMs as passive classifiers, where high aggregate metrics often mask shortcut learning and unreliable reasoning. In this position paper, we argue for a focus shift from event factuality to meta-factivity. We introduce the Meta-Factivity Framework (MFF), a theoretical roadmap that moves evaluation beyond surface recognition to belief trajectory reasoning and epistemic regulation. By framing hallucination as a failure of meta-cognitive control, we advocate for a transition from measuring black-box accuracy to evaluating white-box cognition, laying the groundwork for a more rigorous benchmark for explainable self-governance.
