We present EmbeddingGemma 2, an open multimodal embedding model which natively represents text, images, audio, video, and combinations thereof in a unified space. Our approach introduces improvements such as simplified per-layer embeddings and a multi-stage curriculum with modality and objective progression which ensure strong quality across unimodal, cross-modal, and mixed-modal evaluations. Notably, in comprehensive embedding benchmarks across all modalities, EmbeddingGemma 2 establishes a new Pareto frontier, outperforming both specialist models and models two to twelve times larger. Furthermore, our design offers flexibility for resource-constrained environments, supporting selective modality encoder loading, adjustable vision token budgets, truncatable embedding dimensions, and quantized weights. We present ablations analyzing key decisions and release EmbeddingGemma 2 to promote further research.

EdgePace: Deadline- and Freshness-Aware LLM Scheduling on Unified-Memory Platforms

Teng Mei, Chengxuan Pei, Weijun Wang, Jie Wu, Marco Canini, Yunming Xiao

Large language models (LLMs) increasingly run on edge devices alongside tasks that continuously process sensor data. In many applications, these foreground tasks prepare observations as inputs to the LLM, whose outputs guide subsequent processing or actions. The observations must be processed by foreground deadlines, and LLM feedback must arrive while its source observations remain useful. Yet the CPU and accelerators share a unified-memory system, so LLM inference can delay foreground processing through memory-bandwidth contention even when compute resources remain available. We present EdgePace, a bandwidth-aware runtime that protects foreground deadlines while sustaining timely LLM feedback. EdgePace creates safe suspension points across prefill and decode, monitors foreground memory demand and stalls at low cost, and schedules inference according to contention risk, deadline slack, and output freshness. We evaluate EdgePace on a OnePlus 13 and three NVIDIA Jetson platforms using multi-camera processing and robotic target tracking. Relative to unmanaged inference, it reduces foreground deadline misses by 24.1%--96.1% while retaining 64.9%--98.5% of LLM throughput. All measured LLM outputs arrive within their task-defined freshness windows. On OnePlus 13, for example, camera deadline misses fall by 91.3% while 90.4% of LLM throughput is retained.

AnyCXR: Human Anatomy Segmentation of Chest X-ray at Any Acquisition Position using Multi-stage Domain Randomized Synthetic Data with Imperfect Annotations and Conditional Joint Annotation Regularization Learning

Zifei Dong, Wenjie Wu, Jinkui Hao, Tianqi Chen, Ziqiao Weng, Bo Zhou

Robust anatomical segmentation of chest X-rays (CXRs) remains challenging due to the scarcity of comprehensive annotations and the substantial variability of real-world acquisition conditions. We propose AnyCXR, a unified framework that enables generalizable multi-organ segmentation across arbitrary CXR projection angles using only synthetic supervision. The method combines a Multi-stage Domain Randomization (MSDR) engine, which generates over 100,000 anatomically faithful and highly diverse synthetic radiographs from 3D CT volumes, with a Conditional Joint Annotation Regularization (CAR) learning strategy that leverages partial and imperfect labels by enforcing anatomical consistency in a latent space. Trained entirely on synthetic data, AnyCXR achieves strong zero-shot generalization on multiple real-world datasets, providing accurate delineation of 54 anatomical structures in PA, lateral, and oblique views. The resulting segmentation maps support downstream clinical tasks, including automated cardiothoracic ratio estimation, spine curvature assessment, and disease classification, where the incorporation of anatomical priors improves diagnostic performance. These results demonstrate that AnyCXR establishes a scalable and reliable foundation for anatomy-aware CXR analysis and offers a practical pathway toward reducing annotation burdens while improving robustness across diverse imaging conditions.

Role-Augmented Intent-Driven Generative Search Engine Optimization

Xiaolu Chen, Jie Bao, Haojie Wu, Zhen Chen, Liwei Pan, Yong Liao

Generative search engines (GSEs), which combine large language models (LLMs) with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), are reshaping how users access Web information and making source visibility and influence in generated responses new optimization objectives. Existing generative search engine optimization (G-SEO) methods seek to improve content visibility, but many rely on direct access to target queries or GSE feedback elicited by those queries. However, Web content is typically optimized and published before future user queries are known, making G-SEO without access to target queries or their associated feedback an important yet underexplored problem. To address this, we propose RAID, a Role-Augmented Intent-Driven G-SEO method that operates without access to target queries or query-dependent GSE feedback. RAID infers a primary retrieval intent from source content, refines it through 4W multi-role deep reflection on prospective searchers' information needs, and uses both the primary and refined intents to jointly plan and rewrite source content. We further extend GEO-BENCH with diverse topic-related query variants, using both the original queries and their variants exclusively for evaluation to assess generalization to queries unseen during optimization. Across 100 samples and 500 evaluation queries, RAID achieves Relative Improvement Scores (RIS) of 3.00\% for Objective Overall and 1.32\% for Subjective Average, exceeding the best corresponding results among the nine predefined GEO rewriting strategies by 1.31 and 0.74 percentage points, respectively. With an optimization considered effective when $\mathrm{RIS}>0$, its effective optimization rates for Objective Overall and Subjective Average average 58.0\%, exceeding the highest corresponding average among the predefined strategies by 4.5 percentage points.

Trace-WAM: Learning to Act via 3D Motion Prediction for World Action Models

Xu Hu, Changjie Wu, Linzhe Shi, Hang Zhang, Chen Yang, Lingjun Zhang, Guowen Zhang, Mu Xu 等 11 位作者

World Action Models (WAMs) learn representations for robot control by coupling future visual prediction with action generation. Successful manipulation depends primarily on how the robot and task-relevant objects evolve, whereas future-video prediction must also reconstruct the appearance and background of the entire scene. We therefore propose Trace-WAM, which augments video-action learning with future 3D motion prediction as an auxiliary objective. This objective supervises temporal point correspondence together with image-plane displacement and depth change, directly describing the interaction dynamics and spatial changes involved in manipulation. To this end, we adopt a three-branch Mixture-of-Transformer (Tri-MoT) architecture to jointly learn video prediction, motion prediction, and action generation. The motion expert predicts future trajectories from current visual features, allowing motion supervision to shape the representations used for action generation. Because the action expert does not consume predicted trajectories, inference retains the current-observation policy path: a single visual forward pass followed by action denoising. Experiments on RoboCasa-GR1, LIBERO, and LIBERO-Plus demonstrate strong in-distribution performance and out-of-distribution generalization, with particularly clear gains over Fast-WAM under limited demonstrations and distribution shifts.

\textit{4DSurf}: High-Fidelity Dynamic Scene Surface Reconstruction

Renjie Wu, Hongdong Li, Jose M. Alvarez, Miaomiao Liu

This paper addresses the problem of dynamic scene surface reconstruction using Gaussian Splatting (GS), aiming to recover temporally consistent geometry. While existing GS-based dynamic surface reconstruction methods can yield superior reconstruction, they are typically limited to either a single object or objects with only small deformations, struggling to maintain temporally consistent surface reconstruction of large deformations over time. We propose ``\textit{4DSurf}'', a novel and unified framework for generic dynamic surface reconstruction that does not require specifying the number or types of objects in the scene, can handle large surface deformations and temporal inconsistency in reconstruction. The key innovation of our framework is the introduction of Gaussian deformations induced Signed Distance Function Flow Regularization that constrains the motion of Gaussians to align with the evolving surface. To handle large deformations, we introduce an Overlapping Segment Partitioning strategy that divides the sequence into overlapping segments with small deformations and incrementally passes geometric information across segments through the shared overlapping timestep. Experiments on two challenging dynamic scene datasets, Hi4D and CMU Panoptic, demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art surface reconstruction methods by 49\% and 19\% in Chamfer distance, respectively, and achieves superior temporal consistency under sparse-view settings.

Multi-Task Reinforcement Learning for Enhanced Multimodal LLM-as-a-Judge

Junjie Wu, Xuan Kan, Zihao He, Shunwen Tan, Bo Pan, Kaitai Zhang

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have been widely adopted as MLLM-as-aJudges due to their strong alignment with human judgment across various visual tasks. However, most existing judge models are optimized for single-task scenarios and struggle to generalize to diverse contexts, which is a critical requirement for reliable evaluation. To address this limitation, we propose Multi-Task Reinforcement Learning for MLLM-as-a-Judge (MT-RL-Judge), a framework that jointly optimizes the judge model across multiple tasks, leveraging the generalization capabilities of RL. Experimental results against several strong baselines demonstrate that MT-RL-Judge outperforms strong baselines in both judgment consistency and correlation with human preferences. Furthermore, our approach exhibits robust generalization on out-of-distribution tasks, further validating its effectiveness.

Why Supervised Fine-Tuning Fails to Learn: A Systematic Study of Incomplete Learning in Large Language Models

Chao Xue, Yao Wang, Mengqiao Liu, Di Liang, Xingsheng Han, Peiyang Liu, Xianjie Wu Beijing Information Science & Technology University, Chenyao Lu Tencent AI Lab 等 14 位作者

Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) is the standard approach for adapting large language models (LLMs) to downstream tasks. However, we observe a persistent failure mode: even after convergence, models often fail to correctly reproduce a subset of their own supervised training data. We refer to this behavior as the Incomplete Learning Phenomenon (ILP). This paper presents the first systematic study of ILP in LLM fine-tuning. We formalize ILP as post-training failure to internalize supervised instances and demonstrate its prevalence across multiple model families, domains, and datasets. Through controlled analyses, we identify five recurrent sources of incomplete learning: (1) missing prerequisite knowledge in the pre-trained model, (2) conflicts between SFT supervision and pre-training knowledge, (3) internal inconsistencies within SFT data, (4) left-side forgetting during sequential fine-tuning, and (5) insufficient optimization for rare or complex patterns. We introduce a diagnostic-first framework that maps unlearned samples to these causes using observable training and inference signals, and study several targeted mitigation strategies as causal interventions. Experiments on Qwen, LLaMA, and OLMo2 show that incomplete learning is widespread and heterogeneous, and that improvements in aggregate metrics can mask persistent unlearned subsets. The findings highlight the need for fine-grained diagnosis of what supervised fine-tuning fails to learn, and why.

Parameter Importance is Not Static: Evolving Parameter Isolation for Supervised Fine-Tuning

Zekai Lin University of Glasgow, Chao Xue, Di Liang, Xingsheng Han, Peiyang Liu, Xianjie Wu Beijing Information Science & Technology University, Lei Jiang Tencent AI Lab, Yu Lu 等 11 位作者

Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) of large language models often suffers from task interference and catastrophic forgetting. Recent approaches alleviate this issue by isolating task-critical parameters during training. However, these methods represent a static solution to a dynamic problem, assuming that parameter importance remains fixed once identified. In this work, we empirically demonstrate that parameter importance exhibits temporal drift over the course of training. To address this, we propose Evolving Parameter Isolation (EPI), a fine-tuning framework that adapts isolation decisions based on online estimates of parameter importance. Instead of freezing a fixed subset of parameters, EPI periodically updates isolation masks using gradient-based signals, enabling the model to protect emerging task-critical parameters while releasing outdated ones to recover plasticity. Experiments on diverse multi-task benchmarks demonstrate that EPI consistently reduces interference and forgetting compared to static isolation and standard fine-tuning, while improving overall generalization. Our analysis highlights the necessity of synchronizing isolation mechanisms with the evolving dynamics of learning diverse abilities.

Quantifying and Improving the Robustness of Retrieval-Augmented Language Models Against Spurious Features in Grounding Data

Shiping Yang, Jie Wu Atlassian Corporation, Wenbiao Ding Microsoft, Ning Wu, Shining Liang Microsoft, Ming Gong Atlassian Corporation, Hongzhi Li Tongji University, Hengyuan Zhang 等 10 位作者

Robustness has become a critical attribute for the deployment of RAG systems in real-world applications. Existing research focuses on robustness to explicit noise (e.g., document semantics) but overlooks implicit noise (spurious features). Moreover, previous studies on spurious features in LLMs are limited to specific types (e.g., formats) and narrow scenarios (e.g., ICL). In this work, we identify and study spurious features in the RAG paradigm, a robustness issue caused by the sensitivity of LLMs to semantic-agnostic features. We then propose a novel framework,SURE, to empirically quantify the robustness of RALMs against spurious features. Beyond providing a comprehensive taxonomy and metrics for evaluation, the framework’s data synthesis pipeline facilitates training-based strategies to improve robustness. Further analysis suggests that spurious features are a widespread and challenging problem in the field of RAG. Our code is available at https://anonymous.4open.science/r/RAG-SpuriousFeatures-62B3.

JoPR: Joint Emotion Perception and Reasoning for Conversational Emotion Recognition

Yumeng Fu, Weitao Huang Harbin Institute of Technology, Junjie Wu Suzhou University, Hao Teng Harbin Institute of Technology, Meishan Zhang Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), China, Bingquan Liu Harbin Institute of Technology

Emotion Recognition in Conversation (ERC), the task of identifying the emotion of each utterance in a conversation, is crucial for human-machine interaction. Existing LLM-based ERC methods focus on standard prompting and slow thinking for emotion analysis. However, they suffer from the lack of human-like emotion reasoning and discrimination between similar emotions, thus limiting accurate emotion predictions. To this end, we present JoPR, jointing perception-curriculum learning and emotional reasoning for conversational emotion recognition. Specifically, we devise a multi-dimension curriculum with long CoT fine-tuning to clone human-like emotion reasoning. We further design an emotion-specific reward function in a novel reinforcement learning framework, thereby enhancing the discernment between similar emotions. Our proposal is extensively evaluated over three widely used benchmark datasets, and experimental results confirm the superiority of JoPR. Furthermore, we provide an in-depth analysis to confirm the emotion perception and reasoning capabilities of JoPR.

ERCThinker: Fast-Slow Thinking for Emotion Recognition in Conversation

Yumeng Fu, Weitao Huang Harbin Institute of Technology, Junjie Wu Suzhou University, Hao Teng Harbin Institute of Technology, Shouduo Shang, Meishan Zhang Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), China, Bingquan Liu Harbin Institute of Technology

Emotion Recognition in Conversation (ERC) aims to identify the emotional states of speakers in conversations. Existing ERC methods perform either fast thinking or slow thinking for emotion predictions. The former lacks interpretability of emotion predictions, and the latter focuses on emotion analysis at shallow semantics. Such insufficient reasoning chains fall short in capturing deep semantics within conversations. To address these limitations, we propose ERCThinker, a Fast-Slow thinking framework for the task of ERC. First, we design different thinking strategies with fine-grained emotion reasoning chains to capture deep semantics that contain topic, discourse structure, speaker characteristic, scene, and emotion shift. Second, we develop an adaptive thinking mechanism in both strategy-level and utterance-level, guiding the model to dynamically perform thinking switching across various scenarios. Furthermore, we utilize Agent-as-Judge to score reasoning chains as reward signals for more accurate emotion predictions. To support training, we construct EmotionCueCoT, the emotion reasoning dataset with supervision in both explanation and judgment. Extensive experiments on various ERC benchmark datasets demonstrate that ERCThinker achieves state-of-the-art performance in both explanation and judgment, making progress in the realm of ERC.

We present AutoSchemaKG, a framework for fully autonomous knowledge graph construction that eliminates the need for predefined schemas. Our system leverages large language models to simultaneously extract knowledge triples and induce comprehensive schemas directly from text, modeling both entities and events while employing conceptualization to organize instances into semantic categories. Processing over 50 million documents, we construct ATLAS (Automated Triple Linking And Schema induction), a family of knowledge graphs with 900+ million nodes and 5.9 billion edges. This approach outperforms state-of-the-art baselines on multi-hop QA tasks and enhances LLM factuality. Notably, our schema induction achieves 92% semantic alignment with human-crafted schemas with zero manual intervention, demonstrating that billion-scale knowledge graphs with dynamically induced schemas can effectively complement parametric knowledge in large language models.

Situated Embedding Models for Context-Aware Dense Retrieval

Junjie Wu HKUST, Jiangnan Li WeChat, Tencent Inc., Yuqing Li, Lemao Liu, Liyan Xu WeChat AI, Tencent, Jiwei Li Stanford University, Dit-Yan Yeung Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Jie Zhou 等 9 位作者

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) over long documents typically involves splitting the text into smaller chunks, which serve as the basic units for retrieval. However, due to dependencies across the original document, contextual information is often essential for accurately interpreting each chunk. To address this, prior work has explored encoding longer context windows to produce embeddings for longer chunks, yet their gains in retrieval and downstream tasks remain limited. This is because (1) longer chunks strain the capacity of embedding models due to the increased amount of information they must encode, and (2) many real-world applications still require returning localized evidence due to constraints on model or human bandwidth. To this end, we propose an alternative approach to this challenge by representing short chunks in a way that is conditioned on a broader context window to enhance retrieval performance – i.e., situating a chunk’s meaning within its context. We further show that existing embedding models are not well-equipped to encode such situated context effectively, and thus introduce a new training paradigm and develop the first situated embedding model. To evaluate our method, we curate a book-plot retrieval dataset specifically designed to assess situated retrieval capabilities. On this benchmark, our 1B-parameter model substantially outperforms state-of-the-art embedding models, including several with up to 7B parameters.

Gemma 3 技术报告

Gemma 3 Technical Report

We introduce Gemma 3, a multimodal addition to the Gemma family of lightweight open models, ranging in scale from 1 to 27 billion parameters. This version introduces vision understanding abilities, a wider coverage of languages and longer context - at least 128K tokens. We also change the architecture of the model to reduce the KV-cache memory that tends to explode with long context. This is achieved by increasing the ratio of local to global attention layers, and keeping the span on local attention short. The Gemma 3 models are trained with distillation and achieve superior performance to Gemma 2 for both pre-trained and instruction finetuned versions. In particular, our novel post-training recipe significantly improves the math, chat, instruction-following and multilingual abilities, making Gemma3-4B-IT competitive with Gemma2-27B-IT and Gemma3-27B-IT comparable to Gemini-1.5-Pro across benchmarks. We release all our models to the community.
